1. Highly efficient narrowband terahertz generation driven by a two-spectral-line laser in PPLN

Abstract

We demonstrate record conversion efficiencies of up to 0.9 percent for narrowband (1 percent relative bandwidth) THz generation by strongly-cascaded difference frequency generation. These results are achieved using a novel laser source, customized for high efficiencies, with two narrow spectral lines of variable separation and pulse duration (250 ps). THz generation in 5 percent MgO doped PPLN crystals of varying poling period was explored at cryogenic and room temperature operation as well as different crystal lengths. This work addresses an increasing demand for high-field THz pulses which has, up to now, been largely limited by low optical-to-THz conversion efficiencies.

2. Reconstructing nonlinear plasma wakefields using a generalized temporally encoded spectral shifting analysis

Abstract

We generalize the temporally encoded spectral shifting (TESS) analysis for measuring plasma wakefields using spectral interferometry to dissimilar probe pulses of arbitrary spectral profile and to measuring nonlinear wakefields. We demonstrate that the Gaussian approximation used up until now results in a substantial miscalculation of the wakefield amplitude, by a factor of up to two. A method to accurately measure higher amplitude quasilinear and nonlinear wakefields is suggested, using an extension to the TESS procedure, and we place some limits on its accuracy in these regimes. These extensions and improvements to the analysis demonstrate its potential for rapid and accurate on-shot diagnosis of plasma wakefields, even at low plasma densities.

Abstract

We present a status update on the dedicated R\&D facility SINBAD which is currently under construction at DESY. The facility will host multiple independent experiments on the acceleration of ultra-short electron bunches and novel, high gradient acceleration methods. The first experiment is the ARES-experiment with a normal conducting 100\,MeV S-band linac at its core. We present the objectives of this experiment ranging from the study of compression techniques to sub-fs level to its application as injector for various advanced acceleration schemes e.g. the plans to use ARES as a test-site for DLA experiments in the context of the ACHIP collaboration. The time-line including the planned extension with laser driven plasma-wakefield acceleration is presented. The second initial experiment is AXSIS which aims to accelerate fs-electron bunches to 15\,MeV in a THz driven dielectric structure and subsequently create X-rays by inverse Compton scattering., Comment: EAAC'17 conference proceedings

Abstract

Efficiencies of nonlinear optical-to-terahertz (THz) conversion below one percent remain a limiting factor for applications of multicycle THz radiation like THz-driven acceleration and inspired the use of multi-line pump spectra. To overcome the difficulty of phase stabilization of multiple narrowband sources required by the multi-line approach, we exploit its temporal analog, i.e., regular pulse trains with THz repetition rate, in which the THz waves generated by rectifying the individual pulses add coherently. The optical setup producing the pulse trains consists of motorized interferometers and enables precise control over the pulse train parameters like pulse spacing and amplitude. It is operated with a laser providing 400 fs pulses and energies of up to 110 mJ, which is the highest yet attempted for a pulse-train-type experiment. Opposed to earlier work, pulse division is done after amplification making the system more flexible in terms of tuning the pulse number. We present initial results of an experimental campaign of multicycle THz generation in custom periodically-poled crystals with large-apertures up to 10x20 mm(2). The available pump energy allows filling these apertures at high fluences, promising increased THz yields. We investigate the dependence of the conversion efficiency on the single pulse duration and aim to find the optimum pulse number for different crystal lengths to determine the efficiency limitations in a regime avoiding laser-induced damage. Since crystal length and pulse number define the bandwidth of the THz pulses, this work demonstrates a path to an optimized THz source tunable to different requirements of applications., QC 20240617

Abstract

We present an overview of diagnostic techniques for measuring key parameters of electron bunches from Laser Plasma Accelerators (LPAs). The diagnostics presented here were chosen because they highlight the unique advantages (e.g., diverse forms of electromagnetic emission) and difficulties (e.g., shot-to-shot variability) associated with LPAs. Non destructiveness and high resolution (in space and time and energy) are key attributes that enable the formation of a comprehensive suite of simultaneous diagnostics which are necessary for the full characterization of the ultrashort, but highly-variable electron bunches from LPAs.

Abstract

An analysis of the interaction between a pulsed, supersonic microjet and an intersecting gas-filled capillary is presented, which enables a direct measurement of the pressure evolution inside the nozzle of the microjet. Plasma-emission spectroscopy was used to resolve, on a sub-microsecond timescale, the build-up and decay of pressure in the nozzle, which are shown to be correlated to the volume of the plenum supplying the nozzle and to the nozzle-throat size, respectively. The microjet, which was integrated with a capillary-discharge waveguide in a sapphire structure, was used to create a small, tunable region of high density gas within a centimeter-scale plateau of lower-density for use in a laser-plasma accelerator. The resultant longitudinally structured gas-density profile has been used to provide control of electron trapping and acceleration, but its evolution has not previously been directly quantified. The results presented here pave the way for improved control of laser-plasma accelerators and are also relevant to applications such as miniature satellites and lab-on-a-chip where precise knowledge of microjet pressure evolution is critical. Abstract

We present an analysis of the gas dynamics and density distributions within a capillary-discharge waveguide with an embedded supersonic jet. This device provides a target for a laser plasma accelerator which uses longitudinal structuring of the gas-density profile to enable control of electron trapping and acceleration. The functionality of the device depends sensitively on the details of the density profile, which are determined by the interaction between the pulsed gas in the jet and the continuously-flowing gas in the capillary. These dynamics are captured by spatially resolving recombination light from several emission lines of the plasma as a function of the delay between the jet and the discharge. We provide a phenomenological description of the gas dynamics as well as a quantitative evaluation of the density evolution. In particular, we show that the pressure difference between the jet and the capillary defines three regimes of operation with qualitatively different longitudinal density profiles and show that jet timing provides a sensitive method for tuning between these regimes.
