A new method based on a Fourier series algorithm calculates eigenenergies and envelope functions for arbitrary shaped quantum wells, giving the same results as the finite-difference, finite-element and transfer-matrix methods. It is capable of analyzing an arbitrary potential profile. Solution of the BenDaniel-Duke Hamiltonian shows that effective mass with varying material composition changes eigenenergies in quantum wells.

AlGaAs/GaAs asymmetric quantum well is grown by molecular-beam epitaxy (MBE) that uses digital alloy composition grading method. Al composition extracted from quantum well by coupling high-resolution electron micrograph (HREM) and room-temperature photoluminescence is used to define the shape of the well. The Fourier series's solution of the energy states of the well involves the comparison of the room temperature energy level transitions to determine the composition of the well.

Top-emitting arrays of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been fabricated and demonstrated on complementary metal-oxide-silicon (CMOS) circuitry. The 8x8 array of OLEDs is composed of 90 μm micropixels with a 55 μm separation. The OLEDs are based on an emitting layer of tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminum (Alq[sub 3]) doped with coumarin 6 to provide green light emission. A layer of N,N[sup ′]-diphenyl-N, N[sup ′]-bis(3-methylphenyl)1-1[sup ′]-biphenyl 1-4, 4[sup ′]-diamine (TPD) was used as a hole transport layer and poly(ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with polystyrenesulfonate was used as a buffer layer between the TPD and the CMOS anode metal. We report on a poling process of soda-lime glasses that reduces their surface conductivity by five orders of magnitude. We show that this process enables the in-plane poling of high T[sub g] (180 °C) electro-optic (EO) polymers coated on ion-exchanged channel waveguides fabricated in soda-lime glasses for hybrid modulators. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
