Abstract: Lepton family number violation is tested by searching for $\mu^+\to e^+X^0$ decays among the 5.8$\times 10^8$ positive muon decay events analyzed by the TWIST collaboration. Limits are set on the production of both massless and massive $X^0$ bosons. The large angular acceptance of this experiment allows limits to be placed on anisotropic $\mu^+\to e^+X^0$ decays, which can arise from interactions violating both lepton flavor and parity conservation. Branching ratio limits of order $10^{-5}$ are obtained for bosons with masses of 13 - 80 MeV/c$^2$ and with different decay asymmetries. For bosons with masses less than 13 MeV/c$^{2}$ the asymmetry dependence is much stronger and the 90% limit on the branching ratio varies up to $5.8 \times 10^{-5}$. Abstract: We report the first measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section. It is obtained by observing nuclear deexcitation $\gamma$-rays which follow neutrino-oxygen interactions at the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov detector. We use T2K data corresponding to $3.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. By selecting only events during the T2K beam window and with well-reconstructed vertices in the fiducial volume, the large background rate from natural radioactivity is dramatically reduced. We observe 43 events in the $4-30$ MeV reconstructed energy window, compared with an expectation of 51.0, which includes an estimated 16.2 background events. The background is primarily nonquasielastic neutral-current interactions and has only 1.2 events from natural radioactivity. The flux-averaged NCQE cross section we measure is $1.55 \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ with a 68\% confidence interval of $(1.22, 2.20) \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$ at a median neutrino energy of 630 MeV, compared with the theoretical prediction of $2.01 \times 10^{-38}$ cm$^2$., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The T2K experiment has reported the first observation of the appearance of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam. The main and irreducible background to the appearance signal comes from the presence in the neutrino beam of a small intrinsic component of electron neutrinos originating from muon and kaon decays. In T2K, this component is expected to represent 1.2% of the total neutrino flux. A measurement of this component using the near detector (ND280), located 280 m from the target, is presented. The charged current interactions of electron neutrinos are selected by combining the particle identification capabilities of both the time projection chambers and electromagnetic calorimeters of ND280. The measured ratio between the observed electron neutrino beam component and the prediction is 1.01+-0.10 providing a direct confirmation of the neutrino fluxes and neutrino cross section modeling used for T2K neutrino oscillation analyses. Electron neutrinos coming from muons and kaons decay are also separately measured, resulting in a ratio with respect to the prediction of 0.68+-0.30 and 1.10+-0.14, respectively., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures

Using an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV and a data set corresponding to 6.57 x 10^{20} protons on target, T2K has fit the energy-dependent nu_mu oscillation probability to determine oscillation parameters. Marginalizing over the values of other oscillation parameters yields sin^2 (theta_{23}) = 0.514 +0.055/-0.056 (0.511 +- 0.055), assuming normal (inverted) mass hierarchy. The best-fit mass-squared splitting for normal hierarchy is Delta m^2_{32} = (2.51 +- 0.10) x 10^{-3} eV^2/c^4 (inverted hierarchy: Delta m^2_{13} = (2.48 +- 0.10) x 10^{-3} eV^2/c^4). Adding a model of multinucleon interactions that affect neutrino energy reconstruction is found to produce only small biases in neutrino oscillation parameter extraction at current levels of statistical uncertainty., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures. Abstract: The T2K experiment has observed electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam produced 295 km from the Super-Kamiokande detector with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. A total of 28 electron neutrino events were detected with an energy distribution consistent with an appearance signal, corresponding to a significance of 7.3$\sigma$ when compared to 4.92 $\pm$ 0.55 expected background events. In the PMNS mixing model, the electron neutrino appearance signal depends on several parameters including three mixing angles $\theta_{12}$, $\theta_{23}$, $\theta_{13}$, a mass difference $\Delta m^2_{32}$ and a CP violating phase $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$. In this neutrino oscillation scenario, assuming $|\Delta m^2_{32}| = 2.4 \times 10^{-3}$ $\rm eV^2$, $\sin^2 \theta_{23} = 0.5$, and $\Delta m^2_{32} >0$ ($\Delta m^2_{32} <0$), a best-fit value of $\sin^2 2 \theta_{13}$ = $0.140^{+0.038}_{-0.032}$ ($0.170^{+0.045}_{-0.037}$) is obtained at $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}=0$. When combining the result with the current best knowledge of oscillation parameters including the world average value of $\theta_{13}$ from reactor experiments, some values of $\delta_{\mathrm{CP}}$ are disfavored at the 90% CL., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The T2K collaboration reports a precision measurement of muon neutrino disappearance with an off-axis neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. Near detector measurements are used to constrain the neutrino flux and cross section parameters. The Super-Kamiokande far detector, which is 295 km downstream of the neutrino production target, collected data corresponding to $3.01 \times 10^{20}$ protons on target. In the absence of neutrino oscillations, $205 \pm 17$ (syst.) events are expected to be detected and only 58 muon neutrino event candidates are observed. A fit to the neutrino rate and energy spectrum assuming three neutrino flavors, normal mass hierarchy and $\theta_{23}\leq \pi/4$ yields a best-fit mixing angle $\sin^2(2\theta_{23})=1.000$ and mass splitting $|\Delta m^2_{32}| =2.44 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$/c$^4$. If $\theta_{23}\geq \pi/4$ is assumed, the best-fit mixing angle changes to $\sin^2(2\theta_{23})=0.999$ and the mass splitting remains unchanged., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, revised version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters

Abstract: The T2K collaboration: reports evidence for electron neutrino appearance at the atmospheric mass splitting, |\Delta m_{32}^2|=2.4x10^{-3} eV^2. An excess of electron neutrino interactions over background is observed from a muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector 295 km from the beam's origin. Signal and background predictions are constrained by data from near detectors located 280 m from the neutrino production target. We observe 11 electron neutrino candidate events at the SK detector when a background of 3.3\pm0.4(syst.) events is expected. Abstract: T2K has performed the first measurement of \nu{\mu} inclusive charged current interactions on carbon at neutrino energies of ~1 GeV where the measurement is reported as a flux-averaged double differential cross section in muon momentum and angle. The flux is predicted by the beam Monte Carlo and external data, including the results from the NA61/SHINE experiment. The data used for this measurement were taken in 2010 and 2011, with a total of 10.8 x 10^{19} protons-on-target. The analysis is performed on 4485 inclusive charged current interaction candidates selected in the most upstream fine-grained scintillator detector of the near detector. The flux-averaged total cross section is <\sigma_CC>_\phi =(6.91 +/- 0.13 (stat) +/- 0.84 (syst)) x10^{-39} cm^2/nucleon for a mean neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV.

Abstract: The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using an off-axis muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV that originates at the J-PARC accelerator facility. Interactions of the neutrinos are observed at near detectors placed at 280 m from the production target and at the far detector -- Super-Kamiokande (SK) -- located 295 km away. The flux prediction is an essential part of the successful prediction of neutrino interaction rates at the T2K detectors and is an important input to T2K neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements. A FLUKA and GEANT3 based simulation models the physical processes involved in the neutrino production, from the interaction of primary beam protons in the T2K target, to the decay of hadrons and muons that produce neutrinos. The simulation uses proton beam monitor measurements as inputs. The modeling of hadronic interactions is re-weighted using thin target hadron production data, including recent charged pion and kaon measurements from the NA61/SHINE experiment. For the first T2K analyses the uncertainties on the flux prediction are evaluated to be below 15% near the flux peak. Abstract: We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 10**20 protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single muon-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 +- 14 (syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor nu_mu -> nu_tau oscillations is sin**2(2 theta_23) = 0.98 and |\Delta m**2_32| = 2.65 10**-3 eV**2. The boundary of the 90 % confidence region includes the points (sin**2(2 theta_23),|\Delta m**2_32|) = (1.0, 3.1 10**-3 eV**2), (0.84, 2.65 10**-3 eV**2) and (1.0, 2.2 10**-3 eV**2)., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Abstract: The TWIST Collaboration has completed its measurement of the three muon decay parameters \rho, \delta, and P_\mu\xi. This paper describes our determination of \rho, which governs the shape of the overall momentum spectrum, and \delta, which controls the momentum dependence of the parity-violating decay asymmetry. The results are \rho=0.74977\pm 0.00012(stat.)\pm 0.00023(syst.) and \delta = 0.75049\pm 0.00021(stat.)\pm 0.00027(syst.). These are consistent with the value of 3/4 given for both parameters in the standard model, and each is over a factor of 10 more precise than the measurements published prior to TWIST. Our final results on \rho, \delta, and P_\mu\xi have been incorporated into a new global analysis of all available muon decay data, resulting in improved model-independent constraints on the possible weak interactions of right-handed particles., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

Abstract: Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. Abstract: The T2K experiment observes indications of $\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_e$ appearance in data accumulated with $1.43\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with $|\Delta m_{23}^2|=2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, $\sin^2 2\theta_{23}=1$ and $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0$, the expected number of such events is 1.5$\pm$0.3(syst.). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7$\times10^{-3}$, equivalent to 2.5$\sigma$ significance. Abstract: The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract: We present a new high precision measurement of parity violation in the weak interaction, using polarized muon decay. The TWIST collaboration has measured $P_\mu^\pi \xi$, where $P_\mu^\pi$ is the polarization of the muon in pion decay and $\xi$ describes the intrinsic asymmetry in muon decay. Abstract: The time dependence of muon spin relaxation has been measured in high purity aluminum and silver samples in a longitudinal 2 T magnetic field at room temperature, using time-differential \musr. For times greater than 10 ns, the shape fits well to a single exponential with relaxation rates of $\lambda_{\textrm{Al}} = 1.3 \pm 0.2\,(\textrm{stat.}) \pm 0.3\,(\textrm{syst.})\,\pms$ and $\lambda_{\textrm{Ag}} = 1.0 \pm 0.2\,(\textrm{stat.}) \pm 0.2\,(\textrm{syst.})\,\pms$.

Abstract: The TRIUMF Weak Interaction Symmetry Test (TWIST) experiment was designed to test the standard model at high precision in the purely leptonic decay of polarized muons. A general four-fermion interaction model is used to describe the muon decay. TWIST measures three of the four muon decay parameters of this model, $\rho$, $\delta$ and $P_{\mu}^{\pi} \xi$, from the shape of the momentum-angle spectrum. The results of this model independent approach are compared to the standard model predictions and used to constrain new physics. Our collaboration has finalized the blind analysis of the final experimental data taken in 2006 and 2007. Abstract: We present the first measurement of the energy spectrum up to 70 MeV of electrons from the decay of negative muons after they become bound in $^{27}$Al atoms. The data were taken with the TWIST apparatus at TRIUMF. We find a muon lifetime of (864.6 $\pm$ 1.2) ns, in agreement with earlier measurements. The asymmetry of the decay spectrum is consistent with zero, indicating that the atomic capture has completely depolarised the muons. The measured momentum spectrum is in reasonable agreement with theoretical predictions at the higher energies, but differences around the peak of the spectrum indicate the need for \oalpha radiative corrections to the calculations. The present measurement is the most precise measurement of the decay spectrum of muons bound to any nucleus.

Abstract: The TWIST collaboration has performed new measurements of two of the parameters that describe muon decay: $\rho$, which governs the shape of the overall momentum spectrum, and $\delta$, which governs the momentum dependence of the parity-violating decay asymmetry. This analysis gives the results $\rho=0.75014\pm 0.00017(\text{stat})\pm 0.00044(\text{syst})\pm 0.00011(\eta)$, where the last uncertainty arises from the correlation between $\rho$ and the decay parameter $\eta$, and $\delta = 0.75067\pm 0.00030(\text{stat})\pm 0.00067(\text{syst})$. These are consistent with the value of 3/4 given for both parameters in the Standard Model of particle physics, and are a factor of two more precise than the measurements previously published by TWIST. A new global analysis of all available muon decay data incorporating these results is presented. Improved lower and upper limits on the decay parameter $P_\mu^\pi\xi$ of $0.99524 < P_\mu^\pi\xi \leq \xi < 1.00091$ at 90% confidence are determined, where $P_\mu^\pi$ is the polarization of the muon when it is created during pion decay, and $\xi$ governs the muon decay asymmetry. These results set new model-independent constraints on the possible weak interactions of right-handed particles. Abstract: Differential cross sections for pi- p and pi+ p elastic scattering were measured at five energies between 19.9 and 43.3 MeV. The use of the CHAOS magnetic spectrometer at TRIUMF, supplemented by a range telescope for muon background suppression, provided simultaneous coverage of a large part of the full angular range, thus allowing very precise relative cross section measurements. The absolute normalisation was determined with a typical accuracy of 5 %. This was verified in a simultaneous measurement of muon proton elastic scattering. The measured cross sections show some deviations from phase shift analysis predictions, in particular at large angles and low energies. Abstract: The results of an extensive campaign of measurements of the pi -> pi pi process in the nucleon and nuclei at intermediate energies are presented. The measurements were motivated by the study of strong pi pi correlations in nuclei. The analysis relies on the composite ratio C_{pi pi}^A, which accounts for the clear effect of the nuclear medium on the (pi pi) system. Abstract: The pion production reaction $\pi^+ \to \pi^+\pi^{\pm}$ on $^{45}Sc$ was studied at incident pion energies of $T_{\pi^{+}}$ = 240, 260, 280, 300, and 320 MeV. The experiment was performed using the $M11$ pion-channel at TRIUMF, and multiparticle events, ($\pi^+,\pi^+\pi^{\pm}$) and ($\pi^+,\pi^+\pi^{\pm}p$), were detected with the CHAOS spectrometer. Results are reported in the form of both differential and total cross sections, and are compared to theoretical predictions and the reaction phase space. The present investigation of the T-dependence of the $\pi^+ A \to \pi^+\pi^{\pm} A'$ reaction complements earlier examinations of the A-dependence of the reaction, which was measured using $^{2}H$, $^{4}He$, $^{12}C$, $^{16}O$, $^{40}Ca$, and $^{208}Pb$ targets at $\sim$280 MeV. Abstract: The Crystal Ball ($CB$) collaboration at $BNL$ has recently presented results regarding a study of the $\pi^- A \to \pi^0\pi^0 A^\prime$ reaction on $H, D, C, Al$ and $Cu$, using a nearly 4$\pi$ detector. Similar results, but for the $\pi^+ A \to \pi^+\pi^{\pm} A^\prime$ reaction on $^{2}H$, $^{12}C$, $^{40}Ca$, and $^{208}Pb$, have been published earlier by the $CHAOS$ collaboration at $TRIUMF$. In this Brief Report a comparison of the results of the two measurements is made, which shows that the $CHAOS$ and $CB$ data share relevant common features. Abstract: A precision measurement of absolute pi+p and pi-p elastic differential cross sections at incident pion laboratory kinetic energies from T_pi= 141.15 to 267.3 MeV is described. Data were obtained detecting the scattered pion and recoil proton in coincidence at 12 laboratory pion angles from 55 to 155 degrees for pi+p, and six angles from 60 to 155 degrees for pi-p. Single arm measurements were also obtained for pi+p energies up to 218.1 MeV, with the scattered pi+ detected at six angles from 20 to 70 degrees. A flat-walled, super-cooled liquid hydrogen target as well as solid CH2 targets were used. The data are characterized by small uncertainties, ~1-2% statistical and ~1-1.5% normalization. The reliability of the cross section results was ensured by carrying out the measurements under a variety of experimental conditions to identify and quantify the sources of instrumental uncertainty. Our lowest and highest energy data are consistent with overlapping results from TRIUMF and LAMPF. In general, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute SM95 partial wave analysis solution describes our data well, but the older Karlsruhe-Helsinki PWA solution KH80 does not., Comment: 39 pages, 22 figures (some with quality reduced to satisfy ArXiv requirements. Abstract: Background Patient and public involvement (PPI) is now an expectation of research funders, in the UK, but there is relatively little published literature on what this means in practice – nor is there much evaluative research about implementation and outputs. Policy literature endorses the need to include PPI representation at all stages of planning, performing and research dissemination, and recommends resource allocation to these roles; but details of how to make such inputs effective in practice are less common. While literature on power and participation informs the debate, there are relatively few published case studies of how this can play out through the lived experience of PPI in research; early findings highlight key issues around access to knowledge, resources, and interpersonal respect. This article describes the findings of a case study of PPI within a study about PPI in research. Methods The aim of the study was to look at how the PPI representatives’ inputs had developed over time, key challenges and changes, and lessons learned. We used realist evaluation and normalisation process theory to frame and analyse the data, which was drawn from project documentation, minutes of meetings and workshops, field notes and observations made by PPI representatives and researchers; documented feedback after meetings and activities; and the structured feedback from two formal reflective meetings. Findings Key findings included the need for named contacts who support, integrate and work with PPI contributors and researchers, to ensure partnership working is encouraged and supported to be as effective as possible. A structure for partnership working enabled this to be enacted systematically across all settings. Some individual tensions were nonetheless identified around different roles, with possible implications for clarifying expectations and deepening understandings of the different types of PPI contribution and of their importance. Abstract: We report the first measurement of the neutrino-oxygen neutral-current quasielastic (NCQE) cross section. It is obtained by observing nuclear deexcitation γ rays which follow neutrino-oxygen interactions at the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov detector. We use T2K data corresponding to 3.01 × 10²⁰ protons on target. By selecting only events during the T2K beam window and with well-reconstructed vertices in the fiducial volume, the large background rate from natural radioactivity is dramatically reduced. We observe 43 events in the 4–30 MeV reconstructed energy window, compared with an expectation of 51.0, which includes an estimated 16.2 background events. The background is primarily nonquasielastic neutral-current interactions and has only 1.2 events from natural radioactivity. The flux-averaged NCQE cross section we measure is 1.55 × 10⁻³⁸ cm² with a 68% confidence interval of (1.22, 2.20) × 10⁻³⁸ cm² at a median neutrino energy of 630 MeV, compared with the theoretical prediction of 2.01 × 10⁻³⁸ cm².

Abstract: The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using an off-axis muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV that originates at the J-PARC accelerator facility. Interactions of the neutrinos are observed at near detectors placed at 280 m from the production target and at the far detector -- Super-Kamiokande (SK) -- located 295 km away. The flux prediction is an essential part of the successful prediction of neutrino interaction rates at the T2K detectors and is an important input to T2K neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements. A FLUKA and GEANT3 based simulation models the physical processes involved in the neutrino production, from the interaction of primary beam protons in the T2K target, to the decay of hadrons and muons that produce neutrinos. The simulation uses proton beam monitor measurements as inputs. The modeling of hadronic interactions is re-weighted using thin target hadron production data, including recent charged pion and kaon measurements from the NA61/SHINE experiment. For the first T2K analyses the uncertainties on the flux prediction are evaluated to be below 15% near the flux peak. The uncertainty on the ratio of the flux predictions at the far and near detectors is less than 2% near the flux peak., Comment: 36 pages

Abstract: The TWIST Collaboration has completed a new measurement of the energy-angle spectrum of positrons from the decay of highly polarized muons. A simultaneous measurement of the muon decay parameters {\rho}, {\delta}, and (P_{\mu}){\xi} tests the Standard Model (SM) in a purely leptonic process and provides improved limits for relevant extensions to the SM. Specifically, for the generalized left-right symmetric model |(g_R/g_L){\zeta}| 578 GeV/c^2, both 90% C.L.

Abstract: New experimental results on the p+d p+p-pp and p+d p+p+nn reactions at Tp+ = 283 MeV are presented. In-plane coincidence data were taken with the CHAOS spectrometer using pions from the M11 channel at TRIUMF. Because of the quasi-free nature of the pion-production reaction, the present study is equivalent to studying the elementary p+N p+p±N reactions on protons and neutrons simultaneously. These exclusive measurements provide a set of many-fold differential cross sections which are an ideal testing ground for microscopic models describing the pN ppN reaction. The interpretation of the data relies on a model which is based on effective chiral Lagrangians to describe the piece of the reaction that includes only p's and N's, and on effective Lagrangians to account for intermediate D's and N*'s. The measured many-fold differential cross sections are used to constrain some parameters of the model (x, fd, C, gN*Dn and gN*Np). Finally, the p+p± invariant mass distributions display no evidence of strongly interacting pion pairs in either the I = J = 0 or the I = 2 J = 0 channels.

Abstract: The Crystal Ball ($CB$) collaboration at $BNL$ has recently presented results regarding a study of the $��^- A \to ��^0��^0 A^\prime$ reaction on $H, D, C, Al$ and $Cu$, using a nearly 4$��$ detector. Similar results, but for the $��^+ A \to ��^+��^{\pm} A^\prime$ reaction on $^{2}H$, $^{12}C$, $^{40}Ca$, and $^{208}Pb$, have been published earlier by the $CHAOS$ collaboration at $TRIUMF$. In this Brief Report a comparison of the results of the two measurements is made, which shows that the $CHAOS$ and $CB$ data share relevant common features. In particular, the increase in strength as a function of A seen in the near-threshold $��^+ ��^-$ invariant mass spectra reported by the $CHAOS$ group, is also seen in the $��^0 ��^0$ CB data, when the results from the two groups are compared in a way which accounts for the different acceptances of the two experiments., 7 pages, 1 figure, accepted for publication in Phy. Abstract: We have studied the two reactions 12C(π+,pp) and 12C(π+,ppp) in one experiment, using the CHAOS spectrometer at TRIUMF, at incident pion energies of 200, 240, and 280 MeV. In both cases, we are able to distinguish between reaction mechanisms involving only the detected protons, and those in which additional nucleons must have participated, on the basis of missing momentum. In the case of 12C(π+,ppp), we identify events due to the two step process of π+p quasielastic scattering followed by two-nucleon absorption. Estimates are made for the total cross sections for the various absorption mechanisms.
