Background: The clinical usefulness of gentamicin (GM) is limited due to the development of nephrotoxicity. Potential therapeutic approaches to protect (or) reverse GM damage would have been of very important clinical consequences in increasing the safety of the drug. Several natural agents have been used to ameliorate drugs toxicity. The survey of literature reveals that the Mentha piperita Linn. are found to be used in the traditional system of medicine. However, ameliorative and membrane stabilizing activity of M.piperita have not been scientifically investigated. So, the present study was design to evaluate effects of M.piperita L. on nephrotoxicity in rat model. Methodology: Kidney damage was induced in rats by administrating Gentamicin (GM) intraperitonially at the dose of 100mg/kg body weight for 6 consecutive days. Freshly prepared ethanolic and aqueous extracts of M.piperita (EMPet and AMPet) were orally administered to rats. Results: The altered renal markers (urea, uric acid, creatinine, and BUN) after GM administered were normalized in extracts treated animals. The membrane stabilizing effects were confirmed by erythrocytes osmotic fragility and to RBC morphology. The ameliorative effects were also confirmed by histopathology of renal tissues. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicate that Mentha piperita may emerge as a ameliorative and membrane-stabilizing agent against nephrotoxicity. Further studies need to be undertaken in order to confirm these findings and its extrapolation in humans.

The fresh flowers of Hibiscus vitifolius Linn. were screened to determine antioxident activity. A methanol extract of flower was prepared and partitioned sequentially with petrol, ether and ethyl acetate. The active compounds were identified by UV, 1H NMR (Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) and 13C NMR (Carbon-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) as quercetin and quercetin 3-0-arabinopyranoside. The antioxident activity was also studied in mercury chloride (HgCl2) toxicity through biochemical parameters such as SOD, CAT, GSH, GPX, AST, LPO, vitamin C, vitamin E and urea. Quercetin 3-0-arabinopyranoside treated rats showed decrease in lipid peroxidation. Statistically significant increased in enzymes compared to HgCl2 induced group was observed. Which indicates that quercetin 3-0-arabinopyranoside isolated from the flowers of Hibiscus vitifolius act as a potent antioxidant.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma had developed in Syrian golden hamsters by exposing the buccal mucosa to 0.5 % DMBA in liquid paraffin thrice a week for 14 weeks. The tumor incidence, tumor volume and tumor burden that occurred in the hamster buccal pouch were determined. Oral administration of ethanolic extract of T.populnea bark at a dose of 300 mg / kg b.wt to DMBA painted animals on alternate days of DMBA treated for 14 weeks significantly prevented the tumor incidence, tumor volume and tumor burden. Ethanolic extract of T.populnea bark showed potent antilipidperoxidative effect as well as enhanced the antioxidants status in DMBA painted animals. We thus conclude that ethanolic extract of T.populnea bark has potent chemopreventive efficacy and significant antilipidperoxidative effect in DMBA induced oral carcinogenesis. Further studies are needed to isolate and characterize the bioactive chemopreventive component from the bark of T.populnea . Objectives: Oral cancer is the fifth most frequent cancer worldwide and India has recorded the highest incidence (4050%) of oral malignancy. This study is designed to investigate the effect of aqueous extract of Terminalia arjuna bark (TaBet) on circulatory lipid peroxidation and antioxidant status during 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis. Methods: Male Syrian golden hamsters painted with 0.5% 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene on the buccal pouches and developed oral squamous cell carcinoma were included in this study. Results: The enhanced Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in circulation of tumor-bearing animals was accompanied by a significant decrease in the levels of vitamin C, vitamin E, reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. Administration of TaBet (500 mg/kg body weight) significantly suppressed DMBA-induced hamster buccal pouch carcinomas, decreased lipid peroxidation and enhanced the levels of antioxidants. Conclusion: The chemopreventive potential of TaBet is probably due to its antilipidperoxidative effect or the presence of some potent bioactive chemopreventive principles in the bark of Terminalia arjuna. The results of the present study indicate that T. arjuna may emerge as a putative chemopreventive agent against oral carcinogenesis.
