Search

We show that the recently reported cosmic gravitational wave background by the NANOGrav 15-year collaboration may be the result of resonant particle creation during inflation. For the appropriate amplitude and particle mass an enhancement of the primordial scalar power spectrum could induce Secondary Induced Gravitational Waves (SIGW) which will appear on a scale corresponding to the frequency of the NANOGrav detection. Since the resonant creation will have an effect comparable to that of a delta function increment as studied by the NANOGrav 15-year collaboration, our study indicates that the low-frequency Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) data could reveal the aspects of the physics during inflation through the detection of a cosmic background of Gravitational Waves (GW)., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We recall evidence that long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) have binary progenitors and give new examples. Binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe) consist of a carbon-oxygen core (CO$_{\rm core}$) and a neutron star (NS) companion. For binary periods $\sim 5$ min, the CO$_{\rm core}$ collapse originates the subclass BdHN I characterized by: 1) an energetic supernova (the "SN-rise"); 2) a black hole (BH), born from the NS collapse by SN matter accretion, leading to a GeV emission with luminosity $L_{\rm GeV} = A_{\rm GeV}\,t^{-\alpha_{\rm GeV}}$, observed only in some cases; 3) a new NS ($\nu$NS), born from the SN, originating the X-ray afterglow with $L_X = A_{\rm X}\,t^{-\alpha_{\rm X}}$, observed in all BdHN I. We record $378$ sources and present for four prototypes GRBs 130427A, 160509A, 180720B and 190114C: 1) spectra, luminosities, SN-rise duration; 2) $A_X$, $\alpha_X=1.48\pm 0.32$, and 3) the $\nu$NS spin time-evolution. We infer a) $A_{\rm GeV}$, $\alpha_{\rm GeV}=1.19 \pm 0.04$; b) the BdHN I morphology from time-resolved spectral analysis, three-dimensional simulations, and the GeV emission presence/absence in $54$ sources within the Fermi-LAT boresight angle. For $25$ sources, we give the integrated and time-varying GeV emission, $29$ sources have no GeV emission detected and show X/gamma-ray flares previously inferred as observed along the binary plane. The $25/54$ ratio implies the GeV radiation is emitted within a cone of half-opening angle $\approx 60^{\circ}$ from the normal to the orbital plane. We deduce BH masses $2.3$-$8.9~M_\odot$ and spin $0.27$-$0.87$ by explaining the GeV emission from the BH energy extraction, while their time evolution validates the BH mass-energy formula., Comment: Accepted for publication by MNRAS on March 5, 2021; in press

The abundance of primordial lithium is derived from the observed spectroscopy of metal-poor stars in the galactic halo. However, the observationally inferred abundance remains at about a factor of three below the abundance predicted by standard big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The resolution of this dilemma can be either astrophysical (stars destroy lithium after BBN), nuclear (reactions destroy lithium during BBN), or cosmological, i.e. new physics beyond the standard BBN is responsible for destroying lithium. Here, we overview a variety of possible cosmological solutions, and their shortcomings. On the one hand, we examine the possibility of physical processes that modify the velocity distribution of particles from the usually assumed Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. A physical justification for this is an inhomogeneous spatial distribution of domains of primordial magnetic field strength as a means to reduce the primordial lithium abundance. Another possibility is that scattering with the mildly relativistic electrons in the background plasma alters the baryon distribution to one resembling a Fermi-Dirac distribution. We show that neither of these possibilities can adequately resolve the lithium problem. A number of alternate hybrid models are discussed including a mix of neutrino degeneracy, unified dark matter, axion cooling, and the presence of decaying and/or charged supersymmetric particles., Comment: 6 pages, 0 figures, conference proceedings

The rapid neutron capture process (r process) is believed to be responsible for about half of the production of the elements heavier than iron and contributes to abundances of some lighter nuclides as well. A universal pattern of r-process element abundances is observed in some metal-poor stars of the Galactic halo. This suggests that a well-regulated combination of astrophysical conditions and nuclear physics conspires to produce such a universal abundance pattern. The search for the astrophysical site for r-process nucleosynthesis has stimulated interdisciplinary research for more than six decades. There is currently much enthusiasm surrounding evidence for r-process nucleosynthesis in binary neutron star mergers in the multi-wavelength follow-up observations of kilonova/gravitational-wave GRB170807A/GW170817. Nevertheless, there remain questions as to the contribution over the history of the Galaxy to the current solar-system r-process abundances from other sites such as neutrino-driven winds or magnetohydrodynamical ejection of material from core-collapse supernovae. In this review we highlight some current issues surrounding the nuclear physics input, astronomical observations, galactic chemical evolution, and theoretical simulations of r-process astrophysical environments with the goal of outlining a path toward resolving the remaining mysteries of the r process.

In July 2018 an FRIB Theory Alliance program was held on the implications of GW170817 and its associated kilonova for r-process nucleosynthesis. Topics of discussion included the astrophysical and nuclear physics uncertainties in the interpretation of the GW170817 kilonova, what we can learn about the astrophysical site or sites of the r process from this event, and the advances in nuclear experiment and theory most crucial to pursue in light of the new data. X-ray Flashes (XRFs), binary-driven hypernovae (BdHNe) are long GRB subclasses with progenitor a CO$_{\rm core}$, undergoing a supernova (SN) explosion and hypercritically accreting in a tight binary system onto a companion neutron star (NS) or black hole (BH). In XRFs the NS does not reach by accretion the critical mass and no BH is formed. In BdHNe I, with shorter binary periods, the NS gravitationally collapses and leads to a new born BH. In BdHNe II the accretion on an already formed BH leads to a more massive BH. We assume that the GeV emission observed by \textit{Fermi}-LAT originates from the rotational energy of the BH. Consequently, we verify that, as expected, in XRFs no GeV emission is observed. In $16$ BdHNe I and $5$ BdHNe II, within the boresight angle of LAT, the integrated GeV emission allows to estimate the initial mass and spin of the BH. In the remaining $27$ sources in the plane of the binary system no GeV emission occurs, hampered by the presence of the HN ejecta. From the ratio, $21/48$, we infer a new asymmetric morphology for the BdHNe reminiscent of the one observed in active galactic nuclei (AGN): the GeV emission occurs within a cone of half-opening angle $\approx 60^{\circ}$ from the normal to the orbital plane of the binary progenitor. The transparency condition requires a Lorentz factor $\Gamma \sim 1500$ on the source of GeV emission. The GeV luminosity in the rest-frame of the source follows a universal power-law with index of $-1.20 \pm 0.04$, allowing to estimate the spin-down rate of the BH, Comment: 17 pages

It has recently become clear that in both short and long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) it coexists a sequence of different events, each characterized by specific physical processes and corresponding values of the Lorentz gamma factors. The ultra-relativistic prompt emission (UPE) phase, with Lorentz factor $\Gamma\leq10^4$, is followed by a mildly relativistic plateau-afterglow phase with $\Gamma\lesssim2$. The GeV radiation, with $\Gamma\lesssim50$, coexists with the above two phases. It is shown that: a) the GeV radiation originates at the onset of the formation of a black hole (BH), b) its luminosity follows specific power-law dependence when measured in the rest frame of the source with a decay index $\gamma=-1.29\pm0.06$ in the case of the short GRBs, and $\gamma=-1.20\pm0.04$ in the case of the long GRBs, c) these energetics requirements are used to derive the mass and spin of the BH originating this extended GeV emission. We present these conceptual results for the case of short GRBs in this article and give the extended analysis for long GRBs in a companion article. A direct astrophysical application of these results is that the merger of binary neutron stars leading to BH formation emits GeV radiation: the GeV emission is a necessary and sufficient condition to indicate the creation of a BH in S-GRBs., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We describe the afterglows of the long gamma-ray-burst (GRB) 130427A within the context of a binary-driven hypernova (BdHN). The afterglows originate from the interaction between a newly born neutron star ($\nu$NS), created by an Ic supernova (SN), and a mildly relativistic ejecta of a hypernova (HN). Such a HN in turn results from the impact of the GRB on the original SN Ic. The mildly relativistic expansion velocity of the afterglow ($\Gamma \sim 3$) is determined, using our model independent approach, from the thermal emission between $196$~s and $461$~s. The power-law in the optical and X-ray bands of the afterglow is shown to arise from the synchrotron emission of relativistic electrons in the expanding magnetized HN ejecta. Two components contribute to the injected energy: the kinetic energy of the mildly relativistic expanding HN and the rotational energy of the fast rotating highly magnetized $\nu$NS. We reproduce the afterglow in all wavelengths from the optical ($10^{14}$~Hz) to the X-ray band ($10^{19}$~Hz) over times from $604$~s to $5.18\times 10^6$~s relative to the Fermi-GBM trigger. Initially, the emission is dominated by the loss of kinetic energy of the HN component. After $10^5$~s the emission is dominated by the loss of rotational energy of the $\nu$NS, for which we adopt an initial rotation period of $2$~ms and a dipole plus quadrupole magnetic field of $\lesssim \! 7\times 10^{12}$~G or $\sim \! 10^{14}$~G. This scenario with a progenitor composed of a CO$_{\rm core}$ and a NS companion differs from the traditional ultra-relativistic-jetted treatments of the afterglows originating from a single black hole., Comment: Accepted by ApJ on October 21st, 2018

Big Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) theory predicts the abundances of the light elements D, $^3$He, $^4$He and $^7$Li produced in the early universe. The primordial abundances of D and $^4$He inferred from observational data are in good agreement with predictions, however, the BBN theory overestimates the primordial $^7$Li abundance by about a factor of three. This is the so-called "cosmological lithium problem". Solutions to this problem using conventional astrophysics and nuclear physics have not been successful over the past few decades, probably indicating the presence of new physics during the era of BBN. We have investigated the impact on BBN predictions of adopting a generalized distribution to describe the velocities of nucleons in the framework of Tsallis non-extensive statistics. This generalized velocity distribution is characterized by a parameter $q$, and reduces to the usually assumed Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution for $q$ = 1. We find excellent agreement between predicted and observed primordial abundances of D, $^4$He and $^7$Li for $1.069\leq q \leq 1.082$, suggesting a possible new solution to the cosmological lithium problem., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure

We summarize three recent efforts to constrain the first few moments of cosmic creation before and during the epoch of inflation. We consider two means to explain a slight dip in the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background for multipoles in the range of $\ell= 10-30$ from both the {\it Planck} and {\it WMAP} data. We show that such a dip could be the result of resonant creation of a massive particle that couples to the inflaton field. For best-fit models, the epoch of resonant particle creation reenters the horizon at wave numbers of $k_* \sim 0.00011 \pm 0.0004 $ ($h$ Mpc$^{-1}$). The amplitude and location of these features correspond to the creation of a number of degenerate fermion species of mass $\sim 15/\lambda^{3/2} $ $m_{pl}$ during inflation where $\lambda$ is the coupling constant between the inflaton field and the created fermion species. Alternatively, one can explain the existence of such a dip as due to a jump in the inflation generating potential. We show that such a jump can also resolve the excessively large dark flow predicted from the M-theory landscape. There has been a persistent conundrum in attempts to model the nucleosynthesis of heavy elements by rapid neutron capture (the $r$-process). Although the location of the abundance peaks near nuclear mass numbers 130 and 195 identify an environment of rapid neutron capture near closed nuclear shells, the abundances of elements just above and below those peaks are often underproduced by more than an order of magnitude in model calculations. At the same time there is a debate in the literature as to what degree the $r$-process elements are produced in supernovae or the mergers of binary neutron stars. In this paper we propose a novel solution to both problems. We demonstrate that the underproduction of elements above and below the $r$-process peaks characteristic in the main or weak $r$-process events (like magnetohydrodynamic jets or neutrino-driven winds in core-collapse supernovae) can be supplemented via fission fragment distributions from the recycling of material in a neutron-rich environment such as that encountered in neutron star mergers. In this paradigm, the abundance peaks themselves are well reproduced by a moderately neutron rich, main $r$-process environment such as that encountered in the magnetohydrodynamical jets in supernovae supplemented with a high-entropy, weakly neutron rich environment such as that encountered in the neutrino-driven-wind model to produce the lighter $r$-process isotopes. Moreover, we show that the relative contributions to the $r$-process abundances in both the solar-system and metal-poor stars from the weak, main, and fission-recycling environments required by this proposal are consistent with estimates of the relative Galactic event rates of core-collapse supernovae for the weak and main $r$-process and neutron star mergers for the fission-recycling $r$-process., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background from both the Planck and WMAP data exhibits a slight dip in for multipoles in the range of l=10-30. We show that such a dip could be the result of resonant creation of a massive particle that couples to the inflaton field. For our best-fit models, epochs of resonant particle creation reenters the horizon at wave numbers of k* ~ 0.00011 (h/Mpc). We show that the motion of the neutral masses in an accretion disk orbiting a black hole creates a general-relativistic magnetic-like (gravitomagnetic) field that vertically accelerates neutral particles near the accretion disk upward and then inward toward the axis of the accretion disk. Even though this gravitomagnetic field alone does not achieve collimated jets, it is a novel means to identify one general relativistic effect from a much more complicated problem. In addition, as the accelerated material above or below the accretion disk nears the axis with a nearly vertical direction, a frame-dragging effect twists the trajectories around the axis thus contributing to the formation of collimated bipolar jets., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, typos corrected

We re-analyze the detectability of large scale dark flow (or local bulk flow) with respect to the CMB background based upon the redshift-distance relation for Type Ia supernovae (SN Ia). We made two independent analyses: one based upon identifying the three Cartesian velocity components; and the other based upon the cosine dependence of the deviation from Hubble flow on the sky. We apply these analyses to the Union2.1 SN Ia data and to the SDSS-II supernova survey. For both methods, results for low redshift, $z < 0.05$, are consistent with previous searches. We find a local bulk flow of $v_{\rm bf} \sim 300$ km s$^{-1}$ in the direction of $(l,b) \sim (270, 35)^{\circ}$. However, the search for a dark flow at $z>0.05$ is inconclusive. Based upon simulated data sets, we deduce that the difficulty in detecting a dark flow at high redshifts arises mostly from the observational error in the distance modulus. Thus, even if it exists, a dark flow is not detectable at large redshift with current SN Ia data sets. We estimate that a detection would require both significant sky coverage of SN Ia out to $z = 0.3$ and a reduction in the effective distance modulus error from 0.2 mag to $\lesssim 0.02$ mag. We estimate that a greatly expanded data sample of $\sim 10^4$ SN Ia might detect a dark flow as small as 300 km s$^{-1}$ out to $z = 0.3$ even with a distance modulus error of $0.2$ mag. We analyze constraints on parameters characterizing the pre-inflating universe in an open inflation model with a present slightly open $\Lambda$CDM universe. We employ an analytic model to show that for a broad class of inflation-generating effective potentials, the simple requirement that some fraction of the observed dipole moment represents a pre-inflation isocurvature fluctuation allows one to set upper and lower limits on the magnitude and wavelength scale of pre-inflation fluctuations in the inflaton field, and the curvature of the pre-inflation universe, as a function of the fraction of the total initial energy density in the inflaton field as inflation begins. We estimate that if the pre-inflation contribution to the current CMB dipole is near the upper limit set by the {\it Planck} Collaboration then the current constraints on $\Lambda$CDM cosmological parameters allow for the possibility of a significantly open $\Omega_{i} \le 0.4$ pre-inflating universe for a broad range of the fraction of the total energy in the inflaton field at the onset of inflation. This limit to $\Omega_{i}$ is even smaller if a larger dark-flow tilt is allowed., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure

The Milky Way is the product of a complex evolution of generations of mergers, collapse, star formation, supernova and collisional heating, radiative and collisional cooling, and ejected nucleosynthesis. Moreover, all of this occurs in the context of the cosmic expansion, the formation of cosmic filaments, dark-matter halos, spiral density waves, and emerging dark energy. In this review we summarize observational evidence and discuss recent calculations concerning the formation, evolution nucleosynthesis in the galaxies of the Local-Group. In particular, we will briefly summarize observations and simulations for the dwarf galaxies and the two large spirals of the Local Group. We discuss how galactic halos form within the dark matter filaments that define a super-galactic plane. Gravitational interaction along this structure leads to streaming flows toward the two dominant galaxies in the cluster. These simulations and observations also suggest that a significant fraction of the Galactic halo formed as at large distances and then arrived later along these streaming flows. We summarize several new developments in the nuclear equation of state for supernova simulations and neutron stars. We discuss an updated and improved Notre-Dame-Livermore Equation of State (NDL EoS) for use in supernovae simulations. This Eos contains many updates. Among them are the effects of 3- body nuclear forces at high densities and the possible transition to a QCD chiral and/or super-conducting color phase at densities. We also consider the neutron star equation of state and neutrino transport in the presence of strong magnetic fields. We study a new quantum hadrodynamic (QHD) equation of state for neutron stars (with and without hyperons) in the presence of strong magnetic fields. The parameters are constrained by deduced masses and radii. The calculated adiabatic index for these magnetized neutron stars exhibit rapid changes with density. This may provide a mechanism for star-quakes and flares in magnetars. We also investigate the strong magnetic field effects on the moments of inertia and spin down of neutron stars. The change of the moment of inertia associated with emitted magnetic flares is shown to match well with observed glitches in some magnetars. We also discuss a perturbative calculation of neutrino scattering and absorption in hot and dense hyperonic neutron-star matter in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The absorption cross-sections show a remarkable angular dependence in that the neutrino absorption strength is reduced in a direction parallel to the magnetic field and enhanced in the opposite direction. There is recent evidence that some SiC X grains from the Murchison meteorite may contain supernova-produced {\nu}-process 11B and or 7Li encapsulated in the grains. The synthesis of 11B and 7Li via neutrino-induced nucleon emission (the {\nu} -process) in supernovae is sensitive to the neutrino mass hierarchy for finite sin^2(2{\theta}13) > 0.001}. This sensitivity arises because, when there is 13 mixing, the average electron neutrino energy for charged-current neutrino reactions is larger for a normal mass hierarchy than for an inverted hierarchy. Recent constraints on {\theta}13 from the Daya Bay, Double Chooz, MINOS, RENO and T2K collaborations all suggest that indeed sin^2(2{\theta}13) > 0.001}. We examine the possible implications of these new results based upon a Bayesian analysis of the uncertainties in the measured meteoritic material and the associated supernova nucleosynthesis models. We show that although the uncertainties are large, they hint at a marginal preference for an inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. We discuss the possibility that an analysis of more X grains enriched in Li and B along with a better understanding of the relevant stellar nuclear and neutrino reactions could eventually reveal the neutrino mass hierarchy., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure, Phys. We analyze the production and freeze-out of the isomer 180Tam in the neutrino-process. We consider the influence of a possible low-lying intermediate (J = 5) state at 592 keV using a transition width estimated from the measured half-life. This more realistic width is much smaller than the previous estimate.We find that the 592-keV state leads only to a small reduction of the residual isomer population ratio from the previous result; that is, considering this better estimate for the transition width, the isomer population ratio changes from R = 0.39 to R = 0.38, whereas previously it was estimated that this transition could reduce the ratio to R = 0.18. This finding strengthens the evidence that 138La and 180Ta are coproduced by neutrino nucleosynthesis with an electron neutrino temperature of kT~4 MeV., Comment: Published in Physical Review C, 9 Pages, 2 Figures

We have made a new time-dependent calculation of the supernova production ratio of the long-lived isomeric state of $^{180}$Ta. Such a time-dependent solution is crucial for understanding the production and survival of this isotope. We include the explicit linking between the isomer and all known excited states.We have also calculated the properties of possible links to a conjectured excited state that might decrease the final isomer residual ratio. We find that the explicit time evolution of the synthesis of $^{180}$Ta using the available nuclear data avoids the overproduction relative to $^{138}$La for a $\nu$-process neutrino temperature of 4 MeV., Comment: Published in Phys. Tabulated rates for astrophysical photodisintegration reactions make use of Boltzmann statistics for the photons involved as well as the interacting nuclei. Here we derive analytic corrections for the Planck-spectrum quantum statistics of the photon energy distribution. These corrections can be deduced directly from the detailed-balance condition without the assumption of equilibrium as long as the photons are represented by a Planck spectrum. Moreover we show that these corrections affect not only the photodisintegration rates but also modify the conditions of nuclear statistical equilibrium as represented in the Saha equation. We deduce new analytic corrections to the classical Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics which can easily be added to the reverse reaction rates of existing reaction network tabulations. We show that the effects of quantum statistics, though generally quite small, always tend to speed up photodisintegration rates and are largest for nuclei and environments for which Q/kT ~ 1. As an illustration, we examine possible effects of these corrections on the r-process, the rp-process, explosive silicon burning, the $\gamma$-process and big bang nucleosynthesis. We find that in most cases one is quite justified in neglecting these corrections. The correction is largest for reactions near the drip line for an r-process with very high neutron density, or an rp-process at high-temperature., Comment: 15 pages with 10 figures. A rudimentary calculation is employed to evaluate the possible effects of beta- decays of excited-state nuclei on the astrophysical r-process. Single-particle levels calculated with the FRDM are adapted to the calculation of beta-decay rates of these excited-state nuclei. Quantum numbers are determined based on proximity to Nilson model levels. The resulting rates are used in an r-process network calculation in which a supernova hot-bubble model is coupled to an extensive network calculation including all nuclei between the valley of stability and the neutron drip line and with masses A<284. Beta-decay rates are included as functional forms of the environmental temperature. While the decay rate model used is simple and phenomenological, it is consistent across all 3700 nuclei involved in the r-process network calculation. This represents an approximate first estimate to gauge the possible effects of excited-state beta-decays on r-process freeze-out abundances.

We discuss a cosmology in which cold dark matter begins to decay into relativistic particles at a recent epoch (z < 1). We show that the large entropy production and associated bulk viscosity from such decays leads to an accelerating cosmology as required by observations. We investigate the effects of decaying cold dark matter in a Lambda = 0, flat, initially matter dominated cosmology. We show that this model satisfies the cosmological constraint from the redshift-distance relation for type Ia supernovae. The age in such models is also consistent with the constraints from the oldest stars and globular clusters. Possible candidates for this late decaying dark matter are suggested along with additional observational tests of this cosmological paradigm., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

We summarize masses and radii for a number of white dwarfs as deduced from a combination of proper motion studies, Hipparcos parallax distances, effective temperatures, and binary or spectroscopic masses. A puzzling feature of these data is that some stars appear to have radii which are significantly smaller than that expected for a standard electron-degenerate white-dwarf equations of state. We construct a projection of white-dwarf radii for fixed effective mass and conclude that there is at least marginal evidence for bimodality in the radius distribution forwhite dwarfs. We argue that if such compact white dwarfs exist it is unlikely that they contain an iron core. We propose an alternative of strange-quark matter within the white-dwarf core. We also discuss the impact of the so-called color-flavor locked (CFL) state in strange-matter core associated with color superconductivity. We show that the data exhibit several features consistent with the expected mass-radius relation of strange dwarfs. We reanalyze the allowed parameters for inhomogeneous big bang nucleosynthesis in light of the WMAP constraints on the baryon-to-photon ratio and a recent measurement which has set the neutron lifetime to be 878.5 +/- 0.7 +/- 0.3 seconds. For a set baryon-to-photon ratio the new lifetime reduces the mass fraction of He4 by 0.0015 but does not significantly change the abundances of other isotopes. This enlarges the region of concordance between He4 and deuterium in the parameter space of the baryon-to-photon ratio and the IBBN distance scale. The Li7 abundance can be brought into concordance with observed He4 and deuterium abundances by using depletion factors as high as 9.3. We present numerical simulations to describe the nucleosynthesis and evolution of pre-Galactic clouds in a model which is motivated by cold dark matter simulations of hierarchical galaxy formation. We adopt a SN-induced star-formation mechanism and follow the chemical enrichment and energy input by Type II and Type Ia SNe. We utilize metallicity-dependent yields and include finite stellar lifetimes. We derive the metallicity distribution functions, the age-metallicity relation, and relative elemental abundances for a number of alpha- and Fe-group elements. We find that the dispersion of the metallicity distribution function of the outer halo is reproduced by contributions from clouds with different initial conditions. Clouds with initial masses greater than that of present globular clusters are found to survive the first 0.1 Gyr, suggesting that such systems may have contributed to the formation of the first stars, and could have been self-enriched. More massive clouds are only stable when one assumes an initial mass function that is not biased towards massive stars. The predicted relative abundances of some alpha- and Fe-group elements show good agreement with the observed values down to metallicities below [Fe/H] = -4 when the iron yields are reduced relative to stellar models. The observed scatter is also reproduced for many elements including the observed bifurcation in [alpha/Fe] for stars with low [Fe/H]. However, the predicted dispersion may be too large for some alpha elements unless a limited range of progenitor masses is assumed. The results suggest that the low-mass SNeII were absent at the very low metallicities, and that the upper mass limit for the first stars that contributed to nucleosynthesis may be < 40 solar masses., Comment: 20 pages, 16 figures, Accepted for publication in J. Recent observations of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) have extended the measured power spectrum to higher multipoles $l\gtrsim$1000, and there appears to be possible evidence for excess power on small angular scales. The primordial magnetic field (PMF) can strongly affect the CMB power spectrum and the formation of large scale structure. In this paper, we calculate the CMB temperature anisotropies generated by including a power-law magnetic field at the photon last-scattering surface (PLSS). We then deduce an upper limit on the PMF based on our theoretical analysis of the power excess on small angular scales. We have taken into account several important effects such as the modified matter sound speed in the presence of a magnetic field. An upper limit to the field strength of $|B_\lambda|\lesssim$ 4.7 nG at the present scale of 1 Mpc is deduced. This is obtained by comparing the calculated theoretical result including the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect with recent observed data on the small-scale CMB anisotropies from the $Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe$ (WMAP), the Cosmic Background Imager (CBI), and the Arcminute Cosmology Bolometer Array Receiver (ACBAR). We have analyzed the magnetic effects that may occur in rapidly rotating core collapse supernovae. We consider effects from both magnetic turbulence and the formation of magnetic bubbles. For magnetic turbulence we have made a perturbative analysis for our spherically symmetric core-collapse supernova model that incorporates the build up of magnetic field energy in the matter accreting onto the proto-neutron star shortly after collapse and bounce. This significantly modifies the pressure profile and increases the heating of the material above the proto-neutron star resulting in an explosion even in rotating stars that would not explode otherwise. Regarding magnetic bubbles we show that a model with a modest initial uniform magnetic field and uniform angular velocity of ~0.1 rad/s can form magnetic bubbles due to the very non homologous nature of the collapse. It is estimated that the buoyancy of the bubbles causes matter in the proto-neutron star to rise, carrying neutrino-rich material to the neutron-star surface. This increases the neutrino luminosity sufficiently at early times to achieve a successful neutrino-driven explosion. We deduce new constraints on the entropy per baryon ($s/k$), dynamical timescale ($\tau_{dyn}$), and electron fraction ($Y_{e}$) consistent with heavy element nucleosynthesis in the r-process. We show that the previously neglected reaction flow throu gh the reaction sequence \atg (n,$\gamma$)\Li~ significantly enhances the production of seed nuclei. We analyze the r-process nucleosynthesis in the context of a schematic exponential wi nd model. We show that fewer neutrons per seed nucleus implies that the entropy per baryon required for successful r-process nucleosynthesis must be more than a factor of two higher than previous estimates. We explore observational constraints on a cosmological brane-world scenario in which the bulk is not empty. Rather, exchange of mass-energy between the bulk and the bane is allowed. The evolution of matter fields to an observer on the brane is then modified due to new terms in the energy momentum tensor describing this exchange. We investigate the constraints from various cosmological observations on the flow of matter from the bulk into the brane. Interestingly, we show that it is possible to have a $\Lambda = 0$ cosmology to an observer in the brane which satisfies standard cosmological constraints including the CMB temperature fluctuations, Type Ia supernovae at high redshift, and the matter power spectrum. This model even accounts for the observed suppression of the CMB power spectrum at low multipoles. In this cosmology, the observed cosmic acceleration is attributable to the flow of matter from the bulk to the brane. A peculiar aspect of this cosmology is that the present dark-matter content of the universe may be significantly larger than that of a $\Lambda$CDM cosmology. We study the efficiency and sensitivity of r-process nucleosynthesis to 18 light-element nuclear reaction rates. We adopt empirical power-law relations to parameterize the reaction sensitivities. We utilize two different hydrodynamic models for the neutrino-driven winds in order to study the dependence of our result on supernova wind models. We also utilize an exponential model to approximate a wide variety of other plausible conditions for the r-process. We identify several specific nuclear reactions among light neutron-rich nuclei that play a critical role in determining the final r-process nucleosynthesis yields. As an illustration, we examine ``semi-waiting'' points among the carbon isotopes. We show that not only neutron capture and $\beta$-decay, but also $(\alpha, \mathrm{n})$ reactions are important in determining waiting points along the r-process path. Our numerical results from this sensitivity analysis serve foremost to clarify which light nuclear reactions are most influential in determining the final r-process abundances. We also quantify the effects of present nuclear uncertainties on the final r-process abundances. Recent studies have found the earth's peculiar velocity to be significant in microwave background based tests for compact cosmic topology, and modifications to these tests have been proposed. Tests of non-gaussianity, weak lensing analysis and new tests using improved CMB data will also be sensitive to peculiar velocity. We propose here to simplify matters by showing how to construct a deaberrated CMB map to which any test requiring a Hubble flow viewpoint can be applied without further complication. In a similar manner deaberration can also be applied to object surveys used for example in topological searches and matter distribution analysis. We show that the predicted primordial helium production is significantly reduced when new measurements of the neutron lifetime and the implied enhancement in the weak reaction rates are included in big-bang nucleosynthesis. We analyze the limits on resonant particle production during inflation based upon the power spectrum of fluctuations in matter and the cosmic microwave background. We show that such a model is consistent with features observed in the matter power spectrum deduced from galaxy surveys and damped Lyman-alpha systems at high redshift. It also provides an alternative explanation for the excess power observed in the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background fluctuations in the range of 1000 < l < 3500. For our best-fit models, epochs of resonant particle creation reenter the horizon at wave numbers ~ 0.4 and/or 0.2 (h/Mpc). The amplitude and location of these features correspond to the creation of fermion species of mass ~ 1-2 Mpl during inflation with a coupling constant between the inflaton field and the created fermion species of near unity. We present calculations indicating the possibility of a new class of Type I supernovae. In this new paradigm relativistic terms enhance the self gravity of a carbon-oxygen white dwarf as it passes or orbits near a black hole. This relativistic compression can cause the central density to exceed the threshold for pycnonuclear reactions so that athermonuclear runaway ensues. We consider three possible environments: 1) white dwarfs orbiting a low-mass black hole; 2) white dwarfs encountering a massive black hole in a dense globular cluster; and 3) white dwarfs passing a supermassive black hole in a dense galactic core. We estimate the rate at which such events could occur out to a redshift of z = 1. Event rates are estimated to be significantly less than the rate of normal Type Ia supernovae for all three classes. Nevertheless, such events may be frequent enough to warrant a search for this new class of supernova. We propose several observable signatures which might be used to identify this type of event and speculate that such an event might have produced the observed "mixed-morphology" Sgr A East supernova remnant in the Galactic core., Comment: Accepted for Publication in The Astrophysical Journal

We explore cosmological implications of dark matter as massive particles trapped on a brane embedded in a Randall-Sundrum noncompact higher dimension $AdS_5$ space. It is an unavoidable consequence of this cosmology that massive particles are metastable and can disappear into the bulk dimension. Here, we show that a massive dark matter particle (e.g. the lightest supersymmetric particle) is likely to have the shortest lifetime for disappearing into the bulk. We examine cosmological constraints on this new paradigm and show that disappearing dark matter is consistent (at the 95% confidence level) with all cosmological constraints, i.e. present observations of Type Ia supernovae at the highest redshift, trends in the mass-to-light ratios of galaxy clusters with redshift, the fraction of X-ray emitting gas in rich clusters, and the spectrum of power fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. A best $2 \sigma$ concordance region is identified corresponding to a mean lifetime for dark matter disappearance of $15 \le \Gamma^{-1} \le 80$ Gyr. We explore several models which might be proposed to explain recent possible detections of high-energy (TeV) gamma rays in association with low-energy gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Likely values (and/or upper limits) for the source energies in low- and high-energy gamma rays and hadrons are deduced for the burst sources associated with possible TeV gamma-ray detections by the Project GRAND array. Possible spectra for energetic gammas are deduced for three models: 1) inverse-Compton scattering of ambient photons from relativistic electrons; 2) proton-synchrotron emission; and 3) inelastic scattering of relativistic protons from ambient photons creating high-energy neutral pions, which decay into high-energy photons. These models rely on some basic assumptions about the GRB properties, e.g. that: the low- and high-energy gamma rays are produced at the same location; the time variability of the high-energy component can be estimated from the FWHM of the highest peak in the low-energy gamma ray light curve; and the variability-luminosity relation of Fenimore & Ramirez-Ruiz (2000) gives a reliable estimate of the redshifts of these bursts. We also explore the impact of each of these assumptions upon our models. We conclude that the energetic requirements are difficult to satisfy for any of these models unless, perhaps, either the photon beaming angle is much narrower for the high-energy component than for the low-energy GRB or the bursts occur at very low redshifts (z<0.01). Nevertheless, we find that the energetic requirements are most easily satisfied if TeV gamma rays are produced predominantly by inverse-Compton scattering with a magnetic field strength well below equipartition or by proton-synchrotron emission with a magnetic field strength near equipartition., Comment: 39 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

We reanalyze the cosmological constraints on the existence of a net universal lepton asymmetry and neutrino degeneracy based upon the latest high resolution CMB sky maps from BOOMERANG, DASI, and MAXIMA-1. We generate likelihood functions by marginalizing over $(\omegab h^2,\xinumt, \xinue, \Omega_\Lambda,h,n)$ plus the calibaration uncertainties. We consider flat $\Omega_M + \Omega_\Lambda = 1$ cosmological models with two identical degenerate neutrino species, $\xinumt \equiv \vert \xinum \vert = \vert \xinut \vert$ and a small $\xinue$. We assign weak top-hat priors on the electron-neutrino degeneracy parameter $\xinue$ and $\Omega_b h^2$ based upon allowed values consistent with the nucleosynthesis constraints as a function of $\xinumt$. The change in the background neutrino temperature with degeneracy is also explicitly included, and Gaussian priors for $h = 0.72 \pm 0.08$ and the experimental calibration uncertainties are adopted. The marginalized likelihood functions show a slight (0.5$\sigma$) preference for neutrino degeneracy. Optimum values with two equally degenerate $\mu$ and $\tau$ neutrinos imply $\xinumt = 1.0^{+0.8 (1\sigma)}_{-1.0 (0.5\sigma)}$, from which we deduce $\xi_{\nu_e} = 0.09^{+0.15}_{-0.09}$, and $\Omega_b h^2 = 0.021^{+0.06}_{- 0.002}$. The $2\sigma$ upper limit becomes $ \xinumt \le 2.1$, which implies $\xi_{\nu_e} \le 0.30$, and $\Omega_b h^2 \le 0.030$. For only a single large-degeneracy species the optimal value is $\vert \xinum \vert$ or $\vert \xinut \vert = 1.4$ with a $2\sigma$ upper limit of $\vert \xinum \vert$ or $\vert \xinut \vert \le 2.5$, Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, Phys. We analyze the observational constraints on brane-world cosmology whereby the universe is described as a three-brane embedded in a five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space. In this brane-universe cosmology, the Friedmann equation is modified by the appearance of extra terms which derive from existence of the extra dimensions. In the present work we concentrate on the ``dark radiation'' term which diminishes with cosmic scale factor as $a^{-4}$. We show that, although the observational constraints from primordial abundances allow only a small contribution when this term is positive, a much wider range of negative values is allowed. Furthermore, such a negative contribution can reconcile the tension between the observed primordial $\he4$ and D abundances. We also discuss the possible constraints on this term from the power spectrum of CMB anisotropies in the limit of negligible cosmological perturbation on the brane world. We show that BBN limits the possible contribution from dark radiation just before the nucleosynthesis epoch to lie between -65% and $+5%$ of the background photon energy density. A generic feature of cosmic quintessence models is the possibility of significant energy density in the scalar field during the radiation dominated epoch. This possibility is even greater if the quintessence field begins in a kinetic-dominated regime, for example as might be generated at the end of "quintessential inflation." As such, these models can be constrained by primordial nucleosynthesis and the epoch of photon decoupling. Here, we analyze both kinetic dominated and power-law quintessence fields (with and without a supergravity correction). We quantify the allowed initial conditions and effective-potential parameters. We study the primordial nucleosynthesis and cosmic age in the presence of a net lepton asymmetry as well as baryon asymmetry. We explore a previously unnoted region of the parameter space in which very large baryon densities $0.1 \le \Omega_b \le 1$ can be accommodated within the light-element constraints from primordial nucleosynthesis. This parameter space consists of $\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_\tau$ degeneracies with a small $\nu_e$ degeneracy. We study the r-process nucleosynthesis in neutrino-driven winds of gravitational core collapse SNeII. Appropriate physical conditions are found for successful r-process nucleosynthesis, which meet with several features of heavy elements discovered recently in metal-deficient halo stars. We comment on the paper by Tanusri Ghosh and Somenath Chakrabarty, Phys. Rev. D63, 043006 (2001). In that paper it was argued that a first-order transition to quark matter in the core of a magnetar is absolutely forbidden if its magnetic field strength exceeds $10^{15}$ G. However, we show in this comment that if the quark anomalous magnetic moment and the population of higher Landau levels is taken into account, it may still be possible for a first-order phase transition from nuclear matter to quark matter to occur in the core of a magnetar. We study the role of light neutron-rich nuclei during r-process nucleosynthesis in supernovae. Most previous studies of the r-process have concentrated on the reaction flow of heavy unstable nuclei. Although the nuclear reaction network includes a few thousand heavy nuclei, only limited reaction flow through light-mass nuclei near the stability line has been used in those studies. However, in a viable scenario of the r-process in neutrino-driven winds, the initial condition is a high-entropy hot plasma consisting of neutrons, protons, and electron-positron pairs experiencing an intense flux of neutrinos. In such environments light-mass nuclei as well as heavy nuclei are expected to play important roles in the production of seed nuclei and r-process elements. Thus, we have extended our fully implicit nuclear reaction network so that it includes all nuclei up to the neutron drip line for Z $ \leq 10$, in addition to a larger network for Z $ \geq 10$. In the present nucleosynthesis study, we utilize a wind model of massive SNeII explosions to study the effects of this extended network. We find that a new nuclear-reaction flow path opens in the very light neutron-rich region. This new nuclear reaction flow can change the final heavy-element abundances by as much as an order of magnitude., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

We reanalyze $r$-process nucleosynthesis in the neutron-rich ejecta from a prompt supernova explosion of a low-mass (11 M$_\odot$) progenitor. A pompt explosion is not yet ruled out as a possibility for low-mass supernova progenitors. Moreover, there is mounting evidence that a new $r$-process site may be required. Hence, we assume that a prompt explosion can occur and make a study of r-process nucleosynthesis in the supernova ejecta. To achieve a prompt explosion we have performed a general relativistic hydrodynamic simulation of adiabatic collapse and bounce using a relativistic nuclear-matter equation of state. The electron fraction $Y_e$ during the collapse was fixed at the initial-model value. The size of the inner collapsing core was then large enough to enable a prompt explosion to occur. Adopting the calculated trajectories of promptly ejected material, we explicitly computed the burst of neutronization due to electron captures on free protons in the photodissociated ejecta after the passage of the shock. The thermal and compositional evolution of the resulting neutron-rich ejecta originating from near the surface of proto-neutron star was obtained. These were used in nuclear reaction network calculations to evaluate the products of $r$-process nucleosynthesis. We find that, unlike earlier studies, the amount of $r$-process material ejected per supernova is quite consistent with observed galactic $r$-process abundances. Furthermore, the computed $r$-process abundances are in good agreement with Solar abundances of $r$-process elements for A$> 100$. This suggests that prompt supernovae are still a viable $r$-process site. Recently, attempts have been made to understand the apparent near coincidence of the present dark energy and matter energy in terms of a dynamical attractor-like solution for the evolution of a scalar field. In these models the field couples with the dominant constituent and only acts like a cosmological constant after the onset of the matter-diminated epoch. A generic feature of such solutions, however, is the possibility of significant energy density in the scalar field during the radiation-dominated epoch. This possibility is even greater if the quintessence field begins in a kinetic-dominated regime generated at the end of quintessential inflation. As such, these models can affect and be constrained by primordial nucleosynthesis and the epoch of of photon decoupling. Here, we analyze one popular form of the quintessence field (with and without a supergravity correction) and quantify constraints on the allowed initial conditions and parameters for the effective potential. We reanalyze the cosmological constraints on the existence of a net universal lepton asymmetry and neutrino degeneracy. We show that neutrinos can begin to decouple at higher temperatures than previous estimates due to several corrections which diminish the neutrino reaction rate. These decoupled neutrinos are therefore not heated as the particle degrees of freedom change. The resultant ratio of the relic neutrino-to-photon temperatures after $e^\pm$ annihilation can then be significantly reduced by more than a factor of two from that of the standard nondegenerate ratio. This changes the expansion rate and subsequent primordial nucleosynthesis, photon decoupling, and structure formation. In particular we analyze physically plausible lepton-asymmetric models with large $\nu_\mu$ and $\nu_\tau$ degeneracies together with a moderate $\nu_e$ degeneracy. We show that the nucleosynthesis by itself permits very large neutrino degeneracies $0 \le \xinum$, $\xinut \le 40$, $0 \le \xinue \le 1.4$ together with large baryon densities $0.1 \le \Omega_b \h502 \le 1$ as long as some destruction of primordial lithium has occurred. We also show that structure formation and the power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background allows for the possibility of an $\Omega = 1$, $\Omega_\Lambda = 0.4$, cosmological model for which there is both significant lepton asymmetry ($| \xinum | = | \xinut | \approx 11$) and a relatively large baryon density ($\Omega_b \h502 \approx 0.2$). Our best-fit neutrino-degenerate, high-baryon-content models are mainly distinguished by a suppression of the second peak in the microwave background power spectrum. We report on a study of sub-TeV ($E_\gamma > 10$ GeV) gamma-ray-induced muon secondaries in coincidence with BATSE gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Each TeV gamma ray striking the atmosphere produces $\approx$0.2 muons whose identity and angle can be measured by the Project GRAND array. Eight GRB candidates were studied; seven were selected based upon the optimum product of (detected BATSE fluence) $\times$ (GRAND's acceptance). One candidate was added because it was reported as a detection by the Milagrito collaboration. Seven candidates show a positive, though not statistically significant, muon excess. The most significant possible coincidence shows an excess of $466 \pm 171$ muons during the BATSE T90 time interval. It is also of interest that the event with the second most significant signal to noise (1.2$\sigma$) is the Milagrito event. Recently, neutron stars with very strong surface magnetic fields have been suggested as the site for the origin of observed soft gamma repeaters (SGRs). We investigate the influence of a strong magnetic field on the properties and internal structure of such strongly magnetized neutron stars (magnetars). The presence of a sufficiently strong magnetic field changes the ratio of protons to neutrons as well as the neutron appearance density. We also study the pion production and pion condensation in a strong magnetic field. We study properties of a degenerate equilibrium ideal neutron-proton-electron (npe) gas with and without the effects of the anomalous nucleon magnetic moments in a magnetic field. We also study the appearance of muons as well as pion condensation in strong magnetic fields.
