The development of new materials for the construction sector is a global trend, and products that use by-products in their composition and have also incorporated technology are commercially competitive. Microparticles have large surface areas and can modify the microstructure of materials, positively affecting their physical and mechanical properties. In this context, this study aims to investigate the effect of incorporating aluminium oxide (Al2O3) microparticles on the physical and mechanical properties of oriented strand boards (OSBs) made from reforested residual balsa and castor oil polyurethane resin and to evaluate their durability performance under accelerated aging conditions. The OSBs were produced on a laboratory scale with a density of 650 kg/m3, strand-type particles measuring 90 × 25 × 1 mm3, using castor oil-based polyurethane resin (13%) and Al2O3 microparticle content ranging from 1% to 3% of the resin mass. The physical and mechanical properties of the OSBs were determined following the EN-300:2002 recommendations. The results obtained indicated that the OSBs with 2% Al2O3 presented thickness swelling significantly lower (at the 5% significance level) after being subjected to accelerated aging and internal bonding of the particles higher than the values obtained for the references, evidencing the positive effect of including Al2O3 microparticles in balsa OSBs.

The use of alternative raw materials to produce particleboards become an interesting strategy to replace wood and dampen the deforestation that have created environmental issues. Thus, this paper aims to assess the physical, mechanical, thermal and aging properties of multilayer particleboards produced with green coconut and sugarcane bagasse fibers. The particleboards were produced with two different densities (500 and 700 kg/m3) consisting of 3 layers: two outer layers (OL) of sugarcane bagasse fiber and one inner layer (IL) of green coconut fiber bonded with castor oil polyurethane resin (PU-resin). The physical, mechanical, thermal and accelerated aging properties of the particleboards were measured by advance equipment. The X-ray densitometry identified variations in the density profile across the thickness of the particleboards. Regarding the assessed mechanical properties, the particleboards produced with a density of 500 kg/m3 (T1) meet all the ANSI A208.1-1999 requirements for LD-1 particleboards. On the other hand, the particleboards produced with a density of 700 kg/m3 (T2) only meet ANSI A208.1-1999 requirements for M-2 particleboards. The results of the fatigue tests indicated that all the particleboards assessed were able to survive a fatigue life of 40.000 cycles at stress levels equal to 25% of the breaking load. Accelerated aging assessment shown that this test caused degradation of the particleboards and indicated that the exposure conditions (temperature, humidity, UVA and UVB) caused permanent damage to the physical properties of WA and TS as well as the mechanical properties.

The strands were prepared and then were submitted to four treatments (untreated; cold water, hot water and NaOH). Physical, chemical, thermal and mechanical properties of the strands were measured. Wood-cement composites were produced with all strand treatments. To evaluate the strand effects on the cement hydration, axial compression tests were conducted at 28-day. The phases of the matrix of the composites at 24 h 7- and 28-day were also determinate. Fourier transform infrared spectra shows that, although the treatments partially removed the hemicellulose and extractives, they also reduced the cellulose and lignin bands. Axial compression results indicated that there were no differences between values for the composites with untreated and treated strands. For the phase analyses, in the initial ages (24 h and 7-day), it was identified that portlandite for cement sample (control) is higher than those containing the strands. At 28-day, it was found that among the strands, the untreated have the lower portlandite content and the higher calcium carbonate content. Indicating the cement carbonation over time as presented in the cement sample (control). Therefore, the untreated pine residual strand showed good compatibility with cement and for this study there were no benefits on treating the strands. This study evaluated the technical viability and performance of two different production processes of 3-layer sugarcane-bamboo-based particleboard (3LP) (3LP-PL: pressing in each layer; and 3LP-NPL: non-pressing in each layer) throughout their thermal, physical, mechanical and microstructural properties. The thermal conductivity was determined according to the methodology established by ASTM-E1530: 2011. Physical and mechanical properties were evaluated following the ABNT NBR 14810:2013 Brazilian Standards recommendations. Microstructural properties of the 3LP studied was assessed by using the Micro-CT technique. Thermal conductivity values of both 3LP were lower than the value required by Brazilian Standards for wood-based particleboards. Physical results indicated that the non-pressing in each layer during the 3LP production resulted in less thickness swelling (TS) and water absorption (WA). Modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the 3LP-NPL showed an increase of 38 and 29% compared to the 3LP-PL respectively. Additionally, an increase of 31% was found for the internal bond (IB) value of the 3LP-NPL compared to the 3LP-PL. Considering the results achieved for the 3-layer sugarcane-bamboo-based particleboard the non-pressing in each layer during production presented lower TS and WA values and higher MOR, MOE and IB values.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo desenvolver, produzir e caracterizar painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual com as espécies de eucalipto (Eucalyptus spp.) e pinus (Pinus spp.) com densidade 1250 kg/m³, bem como avaliar o efeito da cura com carbonatação acelerada nas propriedades dos painéis. O projeto foi desenvolvido em quatro etapas. Na Etapa 1 (Tratamentos nos strands de eucalipto e pinus) foi realizada a produção e a avaliação do efeito dos tratamentos de água fria, água quente e solução 2,5% de hidróxido de sódio, nas propriedades dos strands, bem como o estudo do efeito dos strands de eucalipto e pinus (sem e com tratamentos) na hidratação do cimento Portland aos 28 dias de idade. Após a avaliação dos strands, foi constatado que os que não receberam tratamento apresentaram melhor desempenho em comparação aos strands tratados. A etapa 2 (Determinação do teor ótimo de strands de madeira para painéis OSB cimento-madeira residual) visou produzir painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual contendo os teores de 25%, 30% e 35% de strands em massa, seguindo a metodologia convencional de produção de painéis cimento-madeira (OSB-cimento-madeira) e avaliá-los por meio das propriedades, físicas, mecânicas e microestruturais. Os painéis OSB-cimento-madeira com os teores de 25%, 30% e 35% de strands apresentaram propriedades físicas próximas ao valor recomendado pela norma ISO 8335 como também para propriedades mecânicas de módulo de ruptura (MOR) e módulo de elasticidade (MOE). Na etapa 3 (Painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual otimizados) foram ajustados os parâmetros de produção (teor de strands, teor de água, processo de mistura e pressão) e avaliadas as propriedades térmicas, físicas e mecânicas dos painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual com 35% e 45% de strands (em massa). Foi observado que após o ajuste da água não evaporável (Wn), os valores de densidade aparente foram próximos ao valor proposto nos parâmetros produtivos. O teor de strands de 45% resultou em um aumento de aproximadamente 31% no MOR paralelo e de 93% no MOE perpendicular ao strand em comparação com painéis fabricados com teores de 35%. A pressão empregada foi efetiva uma vez que proporcionou uma compressão adequada para ambos os painéis (eucalipto e pinus), não sendo evidenciado o \"efeito mola\". Na Etapa 4 (Cura com carbonatação acelerada em painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual) em que foram avaliados os painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual com 45% de strands submetidos a cura com carbonatação acelerada, durante 12 h foi observada uma redução do inchamento em espessura e da absorção de água. Os valores médios do MOR na direção paralela do strand e do MOE foram próximos aos requisitos mínimos estabelecidos pela EN300: 2006 - classe OSB/1. Para os painéis avaliados após o ensaio de envelhecimento acelerado de 100 ciclos de imersão e secagem, foi observado que o desempenho mecânico dos painéis carbonatados foi significativamente superior aos não carbonatados. Portanto, pode-se concluir que os painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual produzidos com strands de eucalipto e pinus no teor de massa de 45% e curados com carbonatação acelerada apresentaram potencial como um novo material, visto que as propriedades físicas e mecânicas atendem ao estabelecido pela norma EN300:2006 para painel cimento-madeira convencional. This project aims the development, production and characterization of OSB-cement-residual-wood particleboards using the wood species of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) and pine (Pinus spp.) with a density of 1250 kg/m³, as well as to evaluate the accelerated carbonation effects on the particleboard\'s properties. This project was conducted into four steps. In the step 1 (Tratamentos nos strands de eucalipto e pinus) it was realized the strands production and characterization. In this step, the study of the strands (eucalyptus and pine) on the Portland cement hydration at 28 days age was also investigated. The results shown that the strands without treatment perform better than those treated. In the step 2 (Determinação do teor ótimo de strands de madeira para painéis OSB cimento-madeira residual) a physical, mechanical and microstructural properties evaluation was conducted on the OSB-cement-residual-wood particleboards with strand contents of 25%, 30% and 35% (by weight) produced with the conventional cement-wood production method. The OSB-cement-residual-wood with all strand contents shown physical and mechanical (MOR and MOE) properties close to those recommend by ISO 8335. In the step 3 (Painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual otimizados) production parameters were adjusted (strand contents, water content, mixture procedure and pressure) and the particleboards with 35% and 45% of strands thermal, physical and mechanical properties were assessed. The results of this step shown that after once adjusted the non-evaporable water (Wn) in the production, the apparent density values were close to those proposed in the production methods. The particleboards with a strand content of 45% shown an increase of approximately 31% in the parallel MOR and 93% in the MOE perpendicular to the strand compared to those particleboards made with 35%s strand content. It was also found that the pressure used to produce the particleboards (eucalyptus and pine) was effective once it was not evidenced the spring effect. In the step 4 (Cura com carbonatação acelerada em painéis OSB-cimento-madeira residual) the OSB-cement-residual wood with 45% of strands were subjected to accelerated carbonation cure for 12 h and the materials were evaluated. It was found a reduction in thickness welling and water absorption for the carbonated particleboard. The mean values of MOR in the parallel direction of the strand and the MOE were close to the minimum requirements established by the EN300: 2006 - OSB/1 class. For the particleboards evaluated after the accelerated aging test of 100 wetting and drying cycles, it was found that the mechanical performance of the carbonated particleboards was significantly higher than those non-carbonated. Therefore, it can be concluded that the OSB-cement-residual-wood particleboards produced with eucalyptus with 45% of strand and cured by accelerated carbonation presented potential as a new material, since the physical and mechanical properties meet the EN300: 2006 standard requirements for conventional cement-wood panel.

Este trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial de utilização do eco-forro constituído de painéis de partículas de madeira de maravalha de Pinus spp. e fibras de sisal aglutinados com resina poliuretana à base de óleo de mamona (PU-mamona) quando aplicados em bezerreiros cobertos com telhas de fibrocimento. Nesse estudo foi aferida a temperatura interna do bezerreiro, temperatura de globo negro, umidade relativa, no período da primavera, durante 21 dias e determinados os índices de conforto ITGU, ITU e CTR. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que a temperatura de globo negro e os índices de conforto ITGU e CTR dos bezerreiros com eco-forro foi inferior àquelas aferidas em bezerreiros desprovido de forro. As imagens termográficas comprovaram que o eco-forro diminuí a transferência de calor e radiação para o interior da instalação.

This paper studied two alternative polymeric films based on natural latex and rosin as a waterproofing coating for 3-layer sugarcane-bamboo-based particleboards (3LP). To study the roughness as well as evaluate the coating surfaces on the 3LP, scanning confocal electron microscopy (SCEM) was used. The wettability performance of the coatings was evaluated by the surface energy through the contact angle method. The 3LP coated thermal, physical and mechanical properties were evaluated following ASTM-E1530: 2011 and ABNT NBR 14810 standards, respectively. Physical results indicated latex and rosin coatings significantly decreased water permeability in the 3LP showing swelling in thickness (TS) values of 1.72 and 2.43%, respectively, when compared 3LP without coating (3LP-Control) of 12.90%. The latex and rosin coatings on the 3LP did not influence the thermal properties. Mechanical properties of modulus of rupture (MOR)and modulus of elasticity (MOE) under bending solicitation shown that all 3LP met the ANSI Standard A208.1–1999 requirements. Latex successfully formed a smooth and continuous film which covered the surface pores of the 3LP, whereas rosin did not form a smooth and continuous, forming only a thin film on the 3LP.

To evaluate the orientation effect, non-oriented strand cement boards (i) and oriented strand cement boards (ii) were produced and assessed using two different wood species, with three-strand contents. The boards physical and mechanical properties were evaluated following the recommendations of the European Standards EN 317, EN 323 and EN 310, respectively. For non-oriented and oriented strand cement boards, physical properties of thickness swelling (TS) showed that almost all strand contents studied for both wood species were close to that required by ISO 8335. With regard to the orientation effect on the mechanical properties of the modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the boards. It was found a significant improvement for the MOR and MOE of the oriented boards in comparison to those non-oriented. In addition, the boards tested on the parallel of the strand performed better mechanically (around 119% for MOR and 106% for MOE) in comparison with the boards tested on the perpendicular of the strand. Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) stalk particles were studied as an alternative raw material for cement composites. Cement-bonded particleboards measuring 300 × 300 × 10 mm with nominal density of 1250 kg/m3 were produced and assessed. Particleboards were subjected to two curing conditions: (1) – 48 h in a climatic chamber, followed by 25 days in an air saturated environment; and (2) – 48 h in a climatic chamber, and then in a dioxide carbon (15% concentration) environment (24 h), followed by 24 days in an air saturated environment. Physical and mechanical characterizations were carried out for both particleboard samples at 28 days. The particleboard tested in this study may be applied for industrial purposes, since cement-bonded Jerusalem Artichoke particleboards meet the mechanical requirements of the ISO 8335 Standard for building applications. Furthermore, thickness swelling and water absorption of the particleboards were lower than values reported in the literature and Standards requirements. In view of the results, Jerusalem Artichoke stalk particles are suitable to be used to produce cement-bonded particleboards for construction applications.

Commercial binders based on formaldehyde are the main adhesive to produce particleboards, however, these binders are harmful to human health and the environment. In this scenario, alternative binders are a possibility to reduce the formaldehyde content in the particleboards. Therefore, the focus of this original scientific study is to explore the thermal, physical and mechanical properties of particleboards produced with natural rubber latex as a potential polymeric binder. Bagasse-latex particleboard (BLP) with nominal density of 800 kg/m3, with different latex content: 28% (BLP-28), 42% (BLP-42) and 56% (BLP-56) by mass were evaluated. The quality of the particleboards produced was assessed by determining their thermal, physical and mechanical properties. The formation process of interfacial structure between sugarcane bagasse and latex was observed, configuring the adhesion of the two phases. The thermal conductivity of all the particleboard formulations showed attractive performance as thermal insulating material, considering that these are medium to high nominal density particleboards. According to physical tests, higher latex contents in the particleboard did not affect the density, however, it created a binder protection against water absorption. Contrarily, an increase in the latex content (as in BLP-56 formulation) did not cause increase in the mechanical properties under flexural loading. The BLP-42 particleboards performed better mechanically based on modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE) with average values of 6.32 MPa and 1275 MPa, respectively. These results indicated the potential use of latex natural rubber as an alternative to produce insulation particleboards in civil construction.

[EN]: In recent years, agro-industrial residues have focused attention in the scientific community as a new source of pozzolans. In Brazil, for example, one of the wastes generated from agro-industrial activities comes from elephant grass that is cultivated as biomass for energy cogeneration. This study evaluated the effect of hot water treatment on the crystalline structure of elephant grass ashes calcinated in two different temperature (700 and 900°C). To study the chemical structure and the composition of the ashes the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and X-ray diffractions (XRD) analyses were carried out. The results achieved in the present work shown that, elephant grass ashes meet the ASTM C-618 standard, for the minimum sum content of the silica (SiO2), aluminum (Al2O3) and iron (Fe2O3) oxides, of 50% to be considered as a pozzolanic material. The presence of an amorphous phase has been detected in all XRD patterns. The ashes calcinated at 700°C showed lower crystallinity and the treatment with hot water decreased crystallite size, i.e., the material became more amorphous. On the other hand, the ashes calcinated at 900°C, less reactive, had a lower content of K2O. Therefore, the hot water treatment was effective to reduce the potassium content in the ashes. Additionally, it contributed to reduce the crystallite size of silica in the ash calcinated at 700°C, while the effect is contrary to the ash calcinated at 900°C., [PT]: Nos últimos anos, os resíduos agroindustriais têm ganhado atenção na comunidade científica, como uma nova fonte de pozolana. No Brasil, por exemplo, um dos resíduos gerados pelas atividades agroindustriais provém do capim-elefante que é cultivado como biomassa para a cogeração de energia. Este estudo avaliou o efeito do tratamento com água quente na estrutura cristalina da cinza de capim elefante calcinada em duas temperaturas diferentes (700 e 900°C). Para estudar a estrutura química e a composição das cinzas foram realizadas as análises de fluorescência de raios-X (FRX) e difração de raios-X (DRX). Os resultados obtidos no presente trabalho mostraram que, as cinzas de capim elefante atendem as especificações da norma ASTM C-618, como, o teor mínimo da soma dos óxidos de silício (SiO2), de alumínio (Al2O3) e de ferro (Fe2O3), de 50%, para ser considerado como um material pozolânico. A presença de uma fase amorfa foi identificada em todos os difratogramas. As cinzas calcinadas a 700°C apresentaram menor cristalinidade e o tratamento com água quente diminuiu o tamanho de cristalito, ou seja, o material tornou-se mais amorfo. Entretanto, as cinzas calcinadas a 900°C, apesar de possuir menor teor de K2O, apresentaram maior cristalinidade, sendo menos reativas. Portanto, o tratamento com água quente foi efetivo para a redução do teor de potássio nas cinzas. Particleboards were subjected to two different curing conditions, (1) conventional curing: control-curing for 48 h in a climatic chamber, followed by 25 days in a saturated environment (98 +/- 2%) in sealed plastic bags at 23 degrees C, (2) accelerated carbonation-curing for 48 h in a climatic chamber, and then in environment with CO2 (24 h concentration of 15%), followed by 24 days in a saturated environment (98 +/- 2%) in sealed plastic bags at 23 degrees C. After 28 days of curing, the particleboards degree of carbonation was evaluated by TG-DTG and XRD analysis. Thermal, physical and mechanical characterizations were conducted following the recommendations of ASTM-E1530 and DIN: 310, 322, 323 standards, respectively. Accelerated carbonation decreased the portlandite content and increased of calcium carbonate content of the studied particleboards. Thermal properties showed that the particleboards could be used as an insulation material in accordance to European Standard (BS EN 13986). Physical and mechanical properties of the studied materials showed that they are potential building particleboard, because this material satisfied the requirements of ISO 8335 standard. In the present study, physical, chemical, morphological, crystallographic analysis of the non-treated and treated (100 °C during 30 min) sugarcane bagasse fibers were examined. Sugarcane bagasse fibers pre-treatment effect on the Portland cement hydration was monitored by inhibition tests and differential scanning calorimetry in the first 24 h. Furthermore, 28 days age physical-mechanical properties of cement composite materials with sugarcane bagasse fibers were also evaluated. Inhibition index of treated sugarcane bagasse fibers was 5.9%, while for the non-treated sugarcane bagasse fibers it was 67.3%. O presente estudo teve como objetivo produzir e avaliar o desempenho de painéis de partículas homogêneas de cimento-bagaço de cana-de-açúcar curados por carbonatação acelerada. Para atingir os resultados foram realizados ensaios de caracterizações morfológica e físico-química das partículas de bagaço de cana-de-açúcar, bem como ensaio de termometria para identificar a compatibilidade da matéria prima (bagaço) com o cimento. Os painéis de partículas cimento-bagaço produzidos foram submetidos a dois processos de cura distintos: 1- cura por 48 h em câmara climática, seguida por 24 h em ambiente com concentração de 15% ±0.6 de CO2, seguida por 24 dias em ambiente saturado ao ar; 2- cura em câmara climática por 48 h, seguida por 25 dias em ambiente saturado ao ar. Ao final dos 28 dias de cura e após ensaio de envelhecimento acelerado de imersão e secagem foram realizadas as caracterizações físico-mecânicas seguindo as recomendações das normativas DIN: 310; 322 e 323, bem como caracterização microestrutural e de condutividade térmica do painel de partículas cimento-bagaço. Os resultados obtidos indicaram que os painéis de partículas cimento-bagaço curados por carbonatação acelerada apresentaram melhor desempenho físico-mecânico quando comparados aos painéis não carbonatados, pois a carbonatação melhorou a interface entre as partículas e a matriz cimentícia, proporcionando maior adesividade entre as fases. E, além disso, reduziu o pH do meio alcalino em que as partículas de bagaço de cana-de-açúcar estão inseridas, minimizando o processo de degradação da lignina, celulose e hemicelulose. The present study aimed to produce and evaluate the performance of homogeneous particles of cement panels-bagasse-sugar cured by accelerated carbonation. To achieve the results tests were carried out morphological and physical-chemical characterization of particles of bagasse of sugar cane, as well as Thermal-test to identify the compatibility of the raw material (bagasse) with cement. The particle cement-bagasse produced were subjected to two different curing processes: 1-cure for 48 h in climate Chamber, followed by 24 h in environment with concentration of 15% ± 0.6, followed by 24 days in saturated air environment; 2-cure in climate Chamber for 48 h, followed by 25 days in saturated air environment. At the end of the 28 days of curing and after accelerated aging test of soaking and drying were realized the physical-mechanical characterizations according the recommendations of the DIN standards: 310; 322 and 323, as well as micro-structural characterization and thermal conductivity of Particleboard bagasse-cement. The results obtained indicated that the particle bagasse-cement cured by accelerated carbonation presented physical-mechanical performance better than compared with non-carbonated panels because the carbonation has improved the interface between the particles and the cementitious matrix, providing greater adhesion between phases. In addition, reduced the pH of the alkaline medium in which the particles of bagasse of sugar cane are inserted, minimizing the process of degradation of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose.
