To increase density of superconductor digital and neuromorphic circuits by 10x and reach integration scale of $10^8$ Josephson junctions (JJs) per chip, we developed a new fabrication process on 200-mm wafers, using self-shunted Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb JJs and kinetic inductors. The process has a layer of JJs, a layer of resistors, and 10 fully planarized superconducting layers: 8 Nb layers and 2 layers of high kinetic inductance materials, Mo$_2$N and NbN, with sheet inductance of 8 pH/sq and 3 pH/sq, respectively. NbN films were deposited by two methods: with $T_c$=15.5 K by reactive sputtering of a Nb target in Ar+N$_2$ mixture; with $T_c$ in the range from 9 K to 13 K by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) using Tris(diethylamido)(tert-butylimido)niobium(V) metalorganic precursor. PECVD of NbN was investigated to obtain conformal deposition and filling narrow trenches and vias with high depth-to-width ratios, which was not possible to achieve using sputtering and other physical vapor deposition (PVD) methods at temperatures below $200 ^oC$ required to prevent degradation of Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb junctions. Nb layers with 200 nm thickness are used in the process layer stack as ground planes to maintain a high level of interlayer shielding and low intralayer mutual coupling, for passive transmission lines with wave impedances matching impedances of JJs, typically, Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures, 4 tables, 49 references. It is well known that ion irradiation can be successfully used to reproduce microstructural features triggered by neutron irradiation. Even though the irradiation process brings many benefits, it is also associated with several drawbacks. For example, the penetration depth of the ion in the material is very limited. This is particularly important for energies below MeV, ultimately reducing the number of available irradiation facilities. In addition to that, extracting information exclusively from the modified volume may be challenging. Therefore, extreme caution must be taken when interpreting obtained data. Our work aims to compare the findings of nanomechanical studies already conducted separately on thin amorphous ceramic coatings irradiated with ions of different energies, hence layers of different thicknesses. In this work, we show that in some instances, the 10% rule may be obeyed. In order to prove our finding, we compared results obtained for ion irradiated (with two energies: 0.25 and 1.2 MeV up to 25dpa) alumina coating system. Mechanical properties of pristine and ion-irradiated specimens were studied by nanoindentation technique. Interestingly, the qualitative relationship between nanohardness and irradiation damage level is very similar, regardless of the energy used. The presented work proves that for some materials (e.g., hard coatings), the qualitative assessment of the mechanical changes using nanoindentation might be feasible even for shallow implantation depths.

Type-II multiferroics, where spin interactions induce a ferroelectric polarization, are interesting for new device functionalities due to large magnetoelectric coupling. We report on a new type of multiferroicity in the quadruple-perovskite $\text{BiMn}_{\text{3}}\text{Cr}_{\text{4}}\text{O}_{\text{12}}$, where an antiferromagnetic phase is induced by the structural change at the ferroelectric phase transition. The displacive nature of the ferroelectric phase transition at 125 K, with a crossover to an order-disorder mechanism, is evidenced by a polar soft phonon in the THz range and a central mode. Dielectric and pyroelectric studies show that the ferroelectric critical temperature corresponds to the previously reported N\'eel temperature of the $\text{Cr}^{\text{3+}}$ spins. An increase in ferroelectric polarization is observed below 48 K, coinciding with the N\'eel temperature of the $\text{Mn}^{\text{3+}}$ spins. This increase in polarization is attributed to an enhanced magnetoelectric coupling, as no change in the crystal symmetry below 48 K is detected from infrared and Raman spectra.

Synthetic ferrimagnets based on Co and Gd bear promise for directly bridging the gap between volatile information in the photonic domain and non-volatile information in the magnetic domain, without the need for any intermediary electronic conversion. Specifically, these systems exhibit strong spin-orbit torque effects, fast domain wall motion and single-pulse all-optical switching of the magnetization. An important open challenge to bring these materials to the brink of applications is to achieve long-term stability of their magnetic properties. In this work, we address the time-evolution of the magnetic moment and compensation temperature of magnetron sputter grown Pt/Co/Gd trilayers with various capping layers. Over the course of three months, the net magnetic moment and compensation temperature change significantly, which we attribute to quenching of the Gd magnetization. We identify that intermixing of the capping layer and Gd is primarily responsible for this effect, which can be alleviated by choosing nitrides for capping as long as reduction of nitride to oxide is properly addressed. We present an additive approach for the inverse design of kirigami-based mechanical metamaterials by focusing on the empty (negative) spaces instead of the solid tiles. By considering each negative space as a four-bar linkage, we identify a simple recursive relationship between adjacent linkages, yielding an efficient method for creating kirigami patterns. This allows us to solve the kirigami design problem using elementary linear algebra, with compatibility, reconfigurability and rigid-deployability encoded into an iterative procedure involving simple matrix multiplications. The resulting linear design strategy circumvents the solution of a non-convex global optimization problem and allows us to control the degrees of freedom in the deployment angle field, linkage offsets and boundary conditions. We demonstrate this by creating a large variety of rigid-deployable, compact, reconfigurable kirigami patterns. We then realize our kirigami designs physically using two simple but effective fabrication strategies with very different materials. Altogether, our additive approaches present routes for efficient mechanical metamaterial design and fabrication based on ori/kirigami art forms.

Superconducting circuits are among the most advanced quantum computing technologies, however their performance is currently limited by losses found in surface oxides and disordered materials. Here, we identify and spatially localize a near-field signature of loss centers on tantalum films using terahertz scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM). Making use of terahertz nanospectroscopy, we observe a localized excess vibrational mode around 0.5 THz and identify this resonance as the boson peak, a signature of amorphous materials. Grazing-incidence wide-angle x-ray scattering (GIWAXS) shows that oxides on freshly solvent-cleaned samples are amorphous, whereas crystalline phases emerge after aging in air. By localizing defect centers at the nanoscale, our characterization techniques and results will inform the optimization of fabrication procedures for new low-loss superconducting circuits., 15 pages including supplement. 13 figures (4 in main text, 9 in supplement)

We discuss the use of commercial high-power light emitting diodes (LEDs) as a light source for fluorescence pressure measurements. A relatively broad light emitting spectra of single color LEDs (in comparison with lasers) do not prevent producing narrow fluorescence lines at least for two widely used pressure indicator materials, namely ruby (Cr$^{3+}$:Al$_2$O$_3$) and strontium tetraborate (Sm$^{2+}$:SrB$_4$O$_7$). Strongest responses of both pressure indicators were detected for the green color LEDs with the average wavelength $\lambda_{\rm av}\sim 530$ nm. LEDs might be easily implemented for producing fiber coupled, as well as the parallel light sources. LEDs were found to be efficient to replace laser sources in piston-cylinder cell and diamond anvil cell fluorescence pressure measurement setups., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Ferroelectricity (Valasek, J. Phys. Rev. 1921, 17, 475) - a spontaneous formation of electric polarisation - is a solid state phenomenon, usually, associated with ionic compounds or complex materials. Here we show that, atypically for elemental solids, few-layer graphenes can host an equilibrium out-of-plane electric polarisation, switchable by sliding the constituent graphene sheets. The systems hosting such effect include mixed-stacking tetralayers and thicker (5-9 layers) rhombohedral graphitic films with a twin boundary in the middle of a flake. The predicted electric polarisation would also appear in marginally (small-angle) twisted few-layer flakes, where lattice reconstruction would give rise to networks of mesoscale domains with alternating value and sign of out-of-plane polarisation., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures

The intrinsic weak and highly non-local dielectric screening of two-dimensional materials is well known to lead to high sensitivity of their optoelectronic properties to environment. Less studied theoretically is the role of free carriers on those properties. Here, we use ab initio GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations, with a rigorous treatment of dynamical screening and local-field effects, to study the doping-dependence of the quasiparticle and optical properties of a monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide, 2H MoTe$_2$. We predict a quasiparticle band gap renormalization of several hundreds meV for experimentally-achievable carrier densities, and a similarly sizable decrease in the exciton binding energy. This results in an almost constant excitation energy for the lowest-energy exciton resonance with increasing doping density. Using a newly-developed and generally-applicable quasi-2D plasmon-pole model and a self-consistent solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation, we reveal the importance of accurately capturing both dynamical and local-field effects to understand detailed photoluminescence measurements., Comment: 22 pages, 5 figures, under review in Nano Letters

As properties of mono- to few layers of exfoliated van der Waals heterostructures are heavily dependent on their thicknesses, accurate thickness measurement becomes imperative in their study. Commonly used atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy techniques may be invasive and produce inconclusive results. Alternatively, spectroscopic ellipsometry is limited by tens-of-microns lateral resolution and/or low data acquisition rates, inhibiting its utilization for micro-scale exfoliated flakes. In this work, we demonstrate a Fourier imaging spectroscopic micro-ellipsometer with sub-5 microns lateral resolution along with fast data acquisition rate and present angstrom-level accurate and consistent thickness mapping on mono-, bi- and trilayers of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenide (MoS2, WS2, MoSe2, WSe2) flakes. We show that the optical microscope integrated ellipsometer can also map minute thickness variations over a micro-scale flake. In addition, our system addresses the pertinent issue of identifying monolayer thick hBN.

The rare-earth chromates (RECrO$_3$) and manganites (REMnO$_3$) where, RE = Eu, Y, Dy, Ho, Gd are constantly under scrutiny in search of room temperature magnetoelectric multiferroics. However, the artefacts and undesirable signal in some of the measurements pose a severe challenge in confirming the ferroelectric (FE) phase, especially in reference to pyroelectric current measurement technique. In this regard, we propose a simple modified approach to pyroelectric current measurement named as 4-segment thermal cycling protocol. This protocol assists in isolating the elusive, irreversible thermally stimulated current from the currents associated with spontaneous and reversible nature of the electric polarization in FE phase. In order to explain working principle of the protocol, we have compared simulated response of two hypothetical materials; an FE material free of space charges and a paraelectric material possessing only space charges. Further, we experimentally verify these new protocols in a single crystal of prototype ferroelectric material, Glycine Phosphite. This report primarily focuses on detailed investigation of ferroelectricity using the proposed protocol in two polycrystalline materials, HoCrO$_3$ and DyFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$ where, the former has been reported to be multiferroic earlier. Our elaborative and careful approach to pyroelectric studies expound on the absence of reversible spontaneous electric polarization at temperature ranges tested in both, HoCrO$_3$ and DyFe$_{0.5}$Mn$_{0.5}$O$_3$., 13 pages, 6 figures

It has been established empirically that the rate of addition of molecules to the crystal during crystal growth from the melt is proportional to exp(-|{\Delta}S_fus|/R) where {\Delta}S_fus is the entropy of fusion. Here we show that this entropic slowdown arises directly from the separation of the entropy loss and energy loss processes associated with the freezing of the liquid. We present a theoretical treatment of the kinetics based on a model flat energy landscape and derive an explicit expression for the coupling magnitude in terms of the crystal-melt interfacial free energy. The implications of our work for nucleation kinetics are also discussed.

Magnesium and its alloys are the most investigated materials for solid-state hydrogen storage in the form of metal hydrides, but there are still unresolved problems with the kinetics and thermodynamics of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of this group of materials. Severe plastic deformation (SPD) methods, such as equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), high-pressure torsion (HPT), intensive rolling and fast forging, have been widely used to enhance the activation, air resistance, and hydrogenation/dehydrogenation kinetics of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials by introducing ultrafine/nanoscale grains and crystal lattice defects. These severely deformed materials, particularly in the presence of alloying additives or second-phase nanoparticles, can show not only fast hydrogen absorption/desorption kinetics but also good cycling stability. It was shown that some materials that are apparently inert to hydrogen can absorb hydrogen after SPD processing. Moreover, the SPD methods were effectively used for hydrogen binding-energy engineering and synthesizing new magnesium alloys with low thermodynamic stability for reversible low/room-temperature hydrogen storage, such as nanoglasses, high-entropy alloys, and metastable phases including the high-pressure {\gamma}-MgH2 polymorph. This article reviews recent advances in the development of Mg-based hydrogen storage materials by SPD processing and discusses their potential in future applications.

The extra CO2 that has already been released into the atmosphere has to be removed in order to create a world that is carbon neutral. Technologies have been created to remove carbon dioxide from wet flue gas or even directly from ambient air, however these technologies are not widely deployed yet. New generations of creative CO2 capture sorbents have been produced as a consequence of recent improvements in material assembly and surface chemistry. We summarize recent progress on water-stable and encapsulated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO2 capture under a wide range of environmental and operating conditions. In particular, newly developed water-stable MOFs and hydrophobic coating technologies are discussed with insights into their materials discovery and the synergistic effects between different components of these hybrid sorbent systems. The future perspectives and directions of water-stable and encapsulated MOFs are also given for Direct Air Capture of CO2 and CO2 capture from wet flue gas.

We report first principles numerical discovery of hydrostatic pressure driven tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal transition in 1111-type material ThMnAsN accompanied by simultaneous magneto-structural, insulator to metal transition together with complete collapse of Mn moment. We present detailed evolution of various structural parameters, magnetism and electronic structures of ThMnAsN with increasing hydrostatic pressure. All the structural parameters show anomalies at a critical pressure P$_c \sim$ 9 GPa; c-lattice parameter, out of plane As-As bond length, anion height (h$_{As}$) undergo drastic modification compared to the in-plane parameters which is manifested in an iso-structural phase transition from tetragonal to a collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase. These modifications in "local structural correlations" due to pressure destroys usually localized nature of Mn moments and gets completely quenched. Apart from that the elastic constant, the electronic structures also bear the finger prints of insulator-metal and magneto-structural transition at higher pressures accompanying a total collapse of magnetic moment at the vicinity of 9 GPa. The critical value of the pressure P$_c$ at which tetragonal to collapse tetragonal phase transition occurs, remains robust with respect to the on-site Hubbard correlation (U). The dynamical stability of the compound at higher pressures are affirmed through detailed computations of phonon dispersion curves endowed with positive phonon frequency through out the Brillouin zone. The effect of magnetic spin structure on the electronic band structures are obtained through band unfolding. The electronic structure of ThMnAsN at higher pressures "orbital selectively" influences bands, band gap and closely resembles with the electronic structure of Fe-based superconductors with the occurrences of orbital selective Lifshitz transition., Comment: 13 pages, 21 figures

Van der Waals (vdW) assembly allows controlling symmetry of two-dimensional (2D) materials that determines their physical properties. Especially interesting is the recently demonstrated breaking inversion symmetry by polar layer stacking to realize novel electronic, magnetic, and transport properties of 2D vdW materials switchable by induced electric polarization. Here, based on symmetry analyses and density-functional calculations, we explore the emergence of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in antiferromagnetic MnBi2Te4 films assembled by polar layer stacking. We demonstrate that breaking PT symmetry in an MnBi2Te4 bilayer makes this 2D material magnetoelectric and produces a spontaneous AHE switchable by electric polarization. We find that reversable polarization at one of the interfaces in a three-layer MnBi2Te4 film drives a metal-insulator transition, as well as switching between an AHE and quantum AHE (QAHE). Finally, we predict that engineering an interlayer polarization in a three-layer MnBi2Te4 film allows converting MnBi2Te4 from a trivial insulator to a Chern insulator. Overall, our work emphasizes the emergence of quantum-transport phenomena in 2D vdW antiferromagnets by polar layer stacking, which do not exist in this material in the bulk or bulk-like thin-film forms.

Excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide are endowed with intrinsic valley-orbit coupling between their center-of-mass motion and valley pseudospin. When trapped in a confinement potential, e.g., generated by strain field, we find that intralayer excitons are valley and orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled. By tuning trap profile and external magnetic field, one can engineer the exciton states at ground state, and realize a series of valley-OAM entangled states. We further show that the OAM of excitons can be transferred to emitted photons, and these novel exciton states can naturally serve as polarization-OAM locked single photon emitters, which under certain circumstance become polarization-OAM entangled, highly tunable by strain trap and magnetic field. Our proposal demonstrates a novel scheme to generate polarization-OAM locked/entangled photons at nanoscale with high degree of integrability and tunability, pointing to exciting opportunities for quantum information applications., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Besides moiré superlattice, twisting can also generate moiré magnetic exchange interactions (MMEIs) in van der Waals magnets. However, due to the extreme complexity and twist-angle-dependent sensitivity, all existing models fail to capture the MMEIs, preventing the understanding of MMEIs-induced new physics. Here, we develop a microscopic moiré spin Hamiltonian that enables the effective description of MMEIs via a sliding-mapping approach in twisted magnets, as demonstrated in twisted bilayer CrI3. Unexpectedly, we discover that the emergence of MMEIs can create an unprecedented magnetic skyrmion bubble (SkB) with non-conversed helicity, named as moiré-type SkB, representing a unique spin texture solely generated by MMEIs and ready to be detected under the current experimental conditions. Importantly, the size and population of SkBs can be finely controlled by twist angle, a key step for skyrmion-based quantum computing and information storage. Furthermore, we reveal that the MMEIs can be effectively manipulated by the substrate-induced interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, modulating the twist-angle-dependent magnetic phase diagram, which solves the outstanding disagreements between prior theories and experiments and verifies our theory., 17 pages, 5 figures

Two-dimensional arsenic allotropes have been grown on metallic surfaces, while topological properties have been theoretically described on strained structures. Here we experimentally grow arsenene by molecular beam epitaxy over the insulating SiC substrate. The arsenene presents a flat structure with a strain field that follows the SiC surface periodicity. Our ab initio simulations, based on the density functional theory, corroborate the experimental observation. The strained structure presents a new arsenene allotrope with a triangular structure, rather than the honeycomb previously predicted for other pnictogens. This strained structure presents a Peierls-like transition leading to an indirect gap semiconducting behavior.

Semiconducting, core-shell nanocrystals (NCs) are promising building blocks for the construction of higher dimensional artificial nanostructures using oriented attachment. However, the assembly and epitaxial attachment steps critical to this construction introduce disorder and defects which inhibit the observation of desirable emergent electronic phenomena. Consequently, understanding defect formation and remediation in these systems as a function of dimensionality is a crucial step to perfecting their synthesis. In this work, we use in situ high resolution transmission electron microscopy to examine the role of chloride ligands as remediator agents for imperfect attachment interfaces between CdSe/CdS core-shell NCs for both 1D and 2D attachment cases. In the 1D case, we find that the presence of chloride additives in imperfectly attached NC dimers can result in defect removal speeds nearly twice as large as those found in their plain, non-chloride treated counterparts. However, when we increased the dimensionality of the system and examined 2D NC arrays, we found no statistically significant difference in attachment interface quality between the chloride and non-chloride treated samples. The most recognizable feature of graphene's electronic spectrum is its Dirac point around which interesting phenomena tend to cluster. At low temperatures, the intrinsic behavior in this regime is often obscured by charge inhomogeneity but thermal excitations can overcome the disorder at elevated temperatures and create electron-hole plasma of Dirac fermions. The Dirac plasma has been found to exhibit unusual properties including quantum critical scattering and hydrodynamic flow. However, little is known about the plasma's behavior in magnetic fields. Here we report magnetotransport in this quantum-critical regime. In low fields, the plasma exhibits giant parabolic magnetoresistivity reaching >100% in 0.1 T even at room temperature. This is orders of magnitude higher than magnetoresistivity found in any other system at such temperatures. We show that this behavior is unique to monolayer graphene, being underpinned by its massless spectrum and ultrahigh mobility, despite frequent (Planckian-limit) scattering. With the onset of Landau quantization in a few T, where the electron-hole plasma resides entirely on the zeroth Landau level, giant linear magnetoresistivity emerges. It is nearly independent of temperature and can be suppressed by proximity screening, indicating a many-body origin. Clear parallels with magnetotransport in strange metals and so-called quantum linear magnetoresistance predicted for Weyl metals offer an interesting playground to further explore relevant physics using this well-defined quantum-critical 2D system., 8 pages, 3 figures

Focused ion beam (FIB) techniques have been frequently used to section metal-halide perovskites for microstructural investigations. However, the ion beams directly irradiated to the sample surface may alter the properties far different from pristine, potentially leading to modified deterioration mechanisms under aging stressors. Here, we combine complementary approaches to measure the subsurface characteristics of polished perovskite and identify the chemical species responsible for the measured properties. Analysis of the experimental results in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulations indicates that atomic displacements and local heating occur in the subsurface of methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI3) by glazing Ar+ beam irradiation (15 nm by 4 kV at 3 degree). The lead-rich, iodine-deficient surface promotes rapid phase segregation under thermal aging conditions. On the other hand, despite the subsurface modification, our experiments confirm the rest of the MAPbI3 bulk retains the material integrity. Our observation supports that polished perovskites could serve in studying the properties of bulk or buried junctions far away from the altered subsurface with care., Comment: six figures

Water splitting through efficient catalysts represents an ultimate solution for carbon neutrality within 40 years. To achieve this goal, amorphous photocatalysts are noted for their promising performances. Among them, the best known is black titania (amorphous TiOx, x < 2). However, despite the large number of studies on black titania, its color origin, structure-property relationship, and photocatalytic mechanism remain a topic of hot debate, largely due to the difficulty to calculate its precise electronic structure. Here, using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we report the precise electronic structures of black titania and further reveal the generic evolution pattern of the electronic structures of covalent compounds upon amorphization and reduction. Moreover, surface adsorption of the co-catalyst atoms (e.g., Pt) on amorphous substances is simulated for the first time: the disordered surface enables easy accommodation of the co-catalyst atoms, while the extended electronic states facilitate the separation of photo-induced electrons and holes, beneficial for hydrogen evolution. This study elucidates the workings of amorphous catalysts and offers practical guidance for enhancing their performances.

Despite being a staple of synthetic plastics and biomolecules, helical polymers are scarcely studied with Gaussian-basis-set {\it ab initio} electron-correlated methods on an equal footing with molecules. This article introduces an {\it ab initio} second-order many-body Green's-function [MBGF(2)] method with nondiagonal, frequency-dependent Dyson self-energy for infinite helical polymers using screw-axis-symmetry-adapted Gaussian-spherical-harmonics basis functions. Together with the Gaussian-basis-set density-functional theory for energies, analytical atomic forces, translational-period force, and helical-angle force, it can compute correlated energy, quasiparticle energy bands, structures, and vibrational frequencies of an infinite helical polymer, which smoothly converge at the corresponding oligomer results. These methods can handle incommensurable structures, which have an infinite translational period and are hard to characterize by any other method, just as efficiently as commensurable structures. We apply these methods to polyethylene ($2/1$ helix), polyacetylene (Peierls' system), and polytetrafluoroethylene ($13/6$ helix) to establish the quantitative accuracy of MBGF(2)/cc-pVDZ in simulating their (angle-resolved) ultraviolet photoelectron spectra, and of B3LYP/cc-pVDZ or 6-31G** in reproducing their structures, infrared and Raman band positions, phonon dispersions, and (coherent and incoherent) inelastic neutron scattering spectra. We then predict the same properties for infinitely catenated chains of nitrogen or oxygen and discuss their possible metastable existence under ambient conditions. They include planar zigzag polyazene (N$_2$)$_x$ (Peierls' system), $11/3$-helical isotactic polyazane (NH)$_x$, $9/4$-helical isotactic polyfluoroazane (NF)$_x$, and $7/2$-helical polyoxane (O)$_x$ as potential high-energy-density materials.

In the framework of density functional theory (DFT) simulations of molecules and materials, anharmonic terms of the potential energy surface are commonly computed numerically, with an associated cost that rapidly increases with the size of the system. Recently, an efficient approach to calculate cubic and quartic interatomic force constants in the basis of normal modes [Theor. Chem. Acc., 120, 23 (2008)] was implemented in the Crystal program [J. Chem. Theory Comput., 15, 3755-3765 (2019)]. By applying group theory, we are able to further reduce the associated computational cost, as the exploitation of point symmetry can significantly reduce the number of distinct atomically displaced nuclear configurations to be explicitly explored for energy and forces calculations. Our strategy stems from Wigner's theorem and the fact that normal modes are bases of the irreducible representations (irreps) of the point group. The proposed group theoretical approach is implemented in the Crystal program and its efficiency assessed on six test case systems: four molecules (methane, CH4; tetrahedrane, C4H4; cyclo-exasulfur, S6; cubane, C8H8), and two three-dimensional crystals (Magnesium oxide, MgO; and a prototypical Zinc-imidazolate framework, ZIF-8). The speedup imparted by this approach is consistently very large in all high-symmetry molecular and periodic systems, peaking at 76% for MgO.

Highly filled conductive polymer composites (CPCs) are widely used in applications such as bipolar plate materials for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells and redox flow batteries, electromagnetic interference shielding and sensors due to their useful electrical properties. A common method for determining through-plane electrical conductivities $\left(\sigma_{\rm tp} \right)$ of such highly filled CPCs applies a conductive carbon paper between electrodes and sample with application of external pressure to improve electrical contact. We show the pressure-dependence of the measured $\sigma_{\rm tp}$ can be eliminated by using a liquid metal such as the gallium-indium eutectic alloy (EGaIn) as contact material. Results indicate that EGaIn reduces contact resistances and cause three to five times larger $\sigma_{\rm tp}$ compared to measurements with carbon paper contacts and pressures up to 20 bar.

We report findings on the Ion Beam Induced Charge (IBIC) characterization of a 4H-SiC Schottky barrier diode (SBD), in terms of the modification of the Charge Collection Efficiency (CCE) distribution induced by 20 MeV C ions irradiations with fluences ranging from 20 to 200 ions/um2. The lateral IBIC microscopy with 4 MeV protons over the SBD cross section, carried out on the pristine diode evidenced the widening of the depletion layer extension as function of the applied bias and allowed the measurement of the minority carrier diffusion lengths. After the irradiation with C ions, lateral IBIC showed a significant modification of the CCE distribution, with a progressive shrinkage of the depletion layer as the fluence of the damaging C ions increases. A simple electrostatic model ruled out that the shrinkage is due to the implanted charge and ascribed the perturbation of the electrostatic landscape to radiation-induced defects with positive charge state.

Color centers in diamond are promising platforms for quantum technologies. Most color centers in diamond discovered thus far emit in the visible or near-infrared wavelength range, which are incompatible with long-distance fiber communication and unfavorable for imaging in biological tissues. Here, we report the experimental observation of a new color center that emits in the telecom O-band, which we observe in silicon-doped bulk single crystal diamonds and microdiamonds. Combining absorption and photoluminescence measurements, we identify a zero-phonon line at 1221 nm and phonon replicas separated by 42 meV. Using transient absorption spectroscopy, we measure an excited state lifetime of around 270 ps and observe a long-lived baseline that may arise from intersystem crossing to another spin manifold.

Triacylglycerols (TAGs) are among the most important ingredients in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. Many physical properties of such products, incl. morphology, texture and rheology, are determined by the phase behaviour of the included TAGs. Triglycerides are also of special interest for the production of solid lipid nanoparticles, applied for controlled drug delivery and for encapsulation of bioactive ingredients. In this paper, we study the polymorphic behaviour of complex TAG mixtures, composed of 2 to 6 mixed TAGs, by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray scattering techniques, aiming to reveal the general rules for their phase behaviour upon cooling and heating. The results show that two or more coexisting phases form upon solidification $(\alpha$, $\beta'$ and/or $\beta)$, the number of which depends strongly on the cooling rate and on the number of components in the mixture. No completely miscible $\alpha$- or $\beta'$-phases were observed. The structure of the most stable $\beta$ polymorphs, formed upon subsequent heating of the solidified samples, does not depend on the thermal history of the samples. For all mixtures studied, we observed one-component $\beta$ domains, coexisting with binary mixed $\beta$ domains with composition and structure which do not depend on the specific TAG ratio in the mixture. In other words, for a mixture with $k$ saturated TAGs we observed $(2k-1)$ different $\beta$ phases. These conclusions provide some predictive power when analysing the phase transition properties of TAG mixtures.

Size- and shape- dependent unique properties of the metal halide perovskite nanocrystals make them promising building blocks for constructing various electronic and optoelectronic devices. These unique properties together with their easy colloidal synthesis render them efficient nanoscale functional components for multiple applications ranging from light emission devices to energy conversion and storage devices. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) metal halide perovskites in the form of nanosheets (NSs) or nanoplatelets (NPls) are being intensively studied due to their promising 2D geometry which is more compatible with the conventional electronic and optoelectronic device structures where film-like components are employed. In particular, 2D perovskites exhibit unique thickness-dependent properties due to the strong quantum confinement effect, while enabling the bandgap tuning in a wide spectral range. In this review the synthesis procedures of 2D perovskite nanostructures will be summarized, while the application-related properties together with the corresponding applications will be extensively discussed. In addition, perovskite nanocrystals/2D material heterostructures will be reviewed in detail. Finally, the wide application range of the 2D perovskite-based structures developed to date, including pure perovskites and their heterostructures, will be presented while the improved synergetic properties of the multifunctional materials will be discussed in a comprehensive way., 83 pages, 38 Figures

Two essential ingredients for the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect, i.e. topological and magnetic orders, can be combined by doping magnetic ions into a topological insulator (TI) film. Through this approach, the QAH effect has been realized in chromium (Cr)- and/or vanadium (V)-doped TI (Bi,Sb)2Te3 thin films. In this work, we synthesize both V- and Cr-doped Bi2Te3 thin films with controlled dopant concentration using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). By performing magneto-transport measurements, we find that both systems show an unusual but yet similar ferromagnetic response with respect to magnetic dopant concentration, specifically the Curie temperature does not increase monotonically but shows a local maximum at a critical dopant concentration. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that the Cr/V doping introduces hole carriers into Bi2Te3, which consequently move the chemical potential toward the charge neutral point. In addition, the Cr/V doping also reduces the spin-orbit coupling of Bi2Te3 which drives it from a nontrivial TI to a trivial semiconductor. The unusual ferromagnetic response observed in Cr/V-doped Bi2Te3 thin films is attributed to the dopant-concentration-induced magnetic exchange interaction, which displays the evolution from the van Vleck-type ferromagnetism in a nontrivial magnetic TI to the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY)-type ferromagnetism in a trivial diluted magnetic semiconductor. Our work provides insights into the ferromagnetic properties of magnetically doped TI thin films and facilitates the pursuit of high-temperature QAH effect., 17 pages, 4 figures. Internal interfaces in Weyl semimetals (WSMs) are predicted to host distinct topological features that are different from the commonly studied external interfaces (crystal-to-vacuum boundaries). However, the lack of atomically sharp and crystallographically oriented internal interfaces in WSMs makes it difficult to experimentally investigate hidden topological states buried inside the material. Here, we study a unique internal interface known as merohedral twin boundary in chemically synthesized single-crystal nanowires (NWs) of CoSi, a chiral WSM of space group P213 (No. 198). High resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy reveals that this internal interface is (001) twin plane and connects two enantiomeric counterparts at an atomically sharp interface with inversion twinning. Ab-initio calculations show localized internal Fermi arcs at the (001) twin boundary that can be clearly distinguished from both external Fermi arcs and bulk states. These merohedrally twinned CoSi NWs provide an ideal material system to probe unexplored topological properties associated with internal interfaces in WSMs., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

Nanocomposites formed by mixing nanoparticles and polymers offer a limitless creative space for the design of functional advanced materials with a broad range of applications in materials and biological sciences. Here we focus on aqueous dispersions of hydrophobic colloidal soot particles, namely carbon black (CB) dispersed with a sodium salt of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), a food additive known as cellulose gum that bears hydrophobic groups, which are liable to bind physically to CB particles. Varying the relative content of CB nanoparticles and cellulose gum allows us to explore a rich phase diagram that includes a gel phase. We investigate this hydrogel using rheometry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. CB-CMC hydrogels display two radically different types of mechanical behaviors that are separated by a critical CMC-to-CB mass ratio $r_c$. For $rr_c$ CB-CMC gels display a power-law viscoelastic spectrum that depends strongly on the CMC concentration. These relaxation spectra can be rescaled onto a master curve that exhibits a power-law scaling in the high-frequency limit, with an exponent that follows Zimm theory, showing that CMC plays a key role in the gel viscoelastic properties for $r>r_c$. In density functional theory (DFT) based total energy studies, the van der Waals (vdW) and zero-point vibrational energy (ZPVE) correction terms are included to obtain energy differences between polymorphs. We propose and compute a new correction term to the total energy, due to electron-phonon interactions (EPI). We rely on Allen's general formalism, which goes beyond the Quasi-Harmonic Approximation (QHA), to include the free energy contributions due to quasiparticle interactions. We show that, for semiconductors and insulators, the EPI contributions to the free energies of electrons and phonons are the corresponding zero-point energy contributions. Using an approximate version of Allen's formalism in combination with the Allen-Heine theory for EPI corrections, we calculate the zero-point EPI corrections to the total energy for cubic and hexagonal polytypes of Carbon, Silicon and Silicon Carbide. The EPI corrections alter the energy differences between polytypes. In SiC polytypes, the EPI correction term is more sensitive to crystal structure than the vdW and ZPVE terms and is thus essential in determining their energy differences. It clearly establishes that the cubic SiC-3C is metastable and hexagonal SiC-4H is the stable polytype. Our results are consistent with the experimental results of Kleykamp. Our study enables the inclusion of EPI corrections as a separate term in the free energy expression. Quantum materials, particularly Dirac materials with linearly dispersing bands, can be effectively tuned by strain-induced lattice distortions leading to a pseudo-magnetic field that strongly modulates their electronic properties. Here, we grow kagome magnet FeSn films, consisting of alternatingly stacked Sn$_2$ honeycomb (stanene) and Fe$_3$Sn kagome layers, on SrTiO$_3$(111) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Using scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we show that the Sn honeycomb layer can be periodically deformed by epitaxial strain for film thickness below 10 nm, resulting in differential conductance peaks consistent with Landau levels generated by a pseudo-magnetic field greater than 1000 T. Our findings demonstrate the feasibility of strain engineering the electronic properties of topological magnets at the nanoscale., Comment: 46 pages

Intrinsic optoelectronic properties of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) remain largely unexplored because of luminescence quenching effects that are due to the metallic substrate on which the ribbons are grown. We probed excitonic emission from GNRs synthesized on a metal surface with atomic-scale spatial resolution. A scanning tunneling microscope (STM)–based method to transfer the GNRs to a partially insulating surface was used to prevent luminescence quenching of the ribbons. STM-induced fluorescence spectra reveal emission from localized dark excitons that are associated with the topological end states of the GNRs. A low-frequency vibronic emission comb is observed and attributed to longitudinal acoustic modes that are confined to a finite box. Our study provides a path to investigate the interplay between excitons, vibrons, and topology in graphene nanostructures.

Numerous attempts have been made so far to explore the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), but the ultralow observed temperature strongly hinders its practical applications. Hence, it is of great interest to go beyond the existing paradigm of QAHE. Here, we propose that Floquet engineering offers a strategy to realize the QAHE via hybridization of Floquet-Bloch bands. Based on first-principles calculations and Floquet theorem, we unveil that nonequilibrium valley-polarized QAHE (VP-QAHE), independent of magnetic orders, is widely present in ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic members of two-dimensional family materials $M$Si$_2$$Z_4$ ($M$ = Mo, W, V; $Z$ = N, P, As) by irradiating circularly polarized light (CPL). Remarkably, by tuning the frequency, intensity, and handedness of incident CPL, the Chern number of VP-QAHE is highly tunable and up to $\mathcal{C}=\pm 4$. We reveal that such Chern number tunable VP-QAHE attributes to light-induced trigonal warping and multiple band inversion at different valleys. The valley-resolved chiral edge states and quantized plateau of Hall conductance, which facilitates the experimental measurement, are visible inside the global band gap. Our work not only establishes Floquet Engineering of nonequilibrium VP-QAHE with tunable Chern number in realistic materials, but also provides a promising avenue to explore emergent topological phases under light irradiation., 6 pages, 4 figures

The different magnetic behaviors of LaCoO$_3$ films grown on LaAlO$_3$ and SrTiO$_3$ are related to the Co-O-Co bond angles and the constraints imposed on the Co-O bond lengths by the substrate geometries. Long-range magnetic order occurs below T ~ 90 K when the Co-O-Co bond angle is greater than 163 degrees, consistent with the behavior of bulk and nanoparticles forms of LaCoO$_3$. A LaAlO$_3$ substrate prevents magnetic long-range order at low temperatures near the film-substrate interface and collinear antiferromagnetic sublattices away from the interface. At low temperatures, the antiferromagnetically ordered sublattices are non-collinear in films grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, leading to a significant net moment., Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 6 supplementary figures

8 pags., 8 figs., 1 tab., We report the existence of moir\'e patterns and magic angle physics in all families of chiral collapsed carbon nanotubes. A detailed study of the electronic structure of all types of chiral nanotubes, previously collapsed via molecular dynamics, has been performed. We find that each family possesses a unique geometry and moir\'e disposition, as well as a characteristic number of flat bands. Remarkably, all kinds of nanotubes behave the same with respect to magic angle tuning, showing a monotonic behavior that gives rise to magic angles in full agreement with those of twisted bilayer graphene. Therefore, magic angle behavior is universally found in chiral collapsed nanotubes with a small chiral angle, giving rise to moir\'e patterns. Carrier and phonon dynamics in a multilayer WSe2 film are captured by extreme ultraviolet (XUV) transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy at the W N6,7, W O2,3, and Se M4,5 edges (30-60 eV). After the broadband optical pump pulse, the XUV probe directly reports on occupations of optically excited holes and phonon-induced band renormalizations. By comparing with density functional theory calculations, XUV transient absorption due to holes are identified below the W O3 edge whereas signals at the Se M4,5 edges are dominated by phonon dynamics. Therein, 0.4 ps hole relaxation time, 1.5 ps carrier recombination time, and 1.7 ps phonon heating time are extracted. The acquisition of hole and phonon-induced signals in a single experiment can facilitate the investigation of the correlations between electron and phonon dynamics. Furthermore, the simultaneous observation of signals from different elements can be further extended to explore photochemical processes in multilayers and alloys, thereby providing key information for their applications in electronics, photocatalysts, and spintronics., 26 pages, 7 figures

The diffusion of molecules (penetrants) of variable size, shape, and chemistry through dense crosslinked polymer networks is a fundamental scientific problem that is broadly relevant in materials, polymer, physical and biological chemistry. Relevant applications include molecular separations in membranes, barrier materials for coatings, drug delivery, and nanofiltration. A major open question is the relationship between molecular transport, thermodynamic state, and chemical structure of the penetrant and polymeric media. Here we address this question by combining experiment, simulation, and theory to unravel the competing effects of penetrant chemistry on its transport in rubbery and supercooled polymer permanent networks over a wide range of crosslink densities, size ratios, and temperatures. The crucial importance of the coupling of local penetrant hopping to the polymer structural relaxation process, and the secondary importance of geometric mesh confinement effects, are established. Network crosslinks induce a large slowing down of nm-scale polymer relaxation which greatly retards the rate of penetrant activated relaxation. The demonstrated good agreement between experiment, simulation, and theory provides strong support for the size ratio variable (effective penetrant diameter to the polymer Kuhn length) as a key variable, and the usefulness of coarse-grained simulation and theoretical models that average over Angstrom scale chemical details. The developed microscopic theory provides a fundamental understanding of the physical processes underlying the behaviors observed in experiment and simulation. Penetrant transport is theoretically predicted to become even more size sensitive in a more deeply supercooled regime not probed in our present experiments or simulations, which suggests new strategies for enhancing selective polymer membrane design., Comment: including a main text and a supporting information. The atomic-scale cracking mechanism in clay is vital in discovering the cracking mechanism of clay at the continuum scale in that clay is a nanomaterial. In this article, we investigate mechanisms of mode I and mode II crack propagations in pyrophyllite and Ca-montmorillonite with water adsorption through reactive molecular dynamics with a bond-order force field. Clay water adsorption is considered by adding water molecules to the clay surface. During the equilibration stage, water adsorption could cause bending deformation of the pre-defined edge crack region. The relatively small orientating angle of water molecules indicates the formation of hydrogen bonds in the crack propagation process. The peak number density of adsorbed water decreases with the increasing strains. The atomistic structure evolution of the crack tip under loading is analyzed to interpret the nanoscale crack propagation mechanism. The numerical results show that the crack tip first gets blunted with a significant increase in the radius of the curvature of the crack tip and a slight change in crack length. The crack tip blunting is studied by tracking the crack tip opening distance and O-Si-O angle in the tetrahedral Si-O cell in mode I and II cracks. We compare bond-breaking behaviors between Al-O and Si-O. It is found that Si-O bond breaking is primarily responsible for crack propagation. The critical stress intensity factor and critical energy release rate are determined from MD simulation results.

Identifying the operative mode of phase separation [spinodal decomposition (SD) or nucleation–growth (NG)] remains an extremely important area of research. The present work examines this critically in the Fe–Cr system using atom probe tomography (APT) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), and establishes the framework to distinguish the two different modes of α′ phase separation in thermally aged Fe–35 at% Cr and Fe–20 at% Cr alloys. Independent APT analysis determines the mode of phase separation on the basis of (i) the presence/absence of periodic chemical fluctuation through radial distribution function analysis and (ii) interphase interface characteristics (diffuse/sharp). SANS analysis, in contrast, yields virtually indistinguishable correlation peaks for both the modes, which necessitates further investigation of the several different aspects of SANS profiles in the light of APT results. For the first time, key features of SANS profiles have been identified that can unambiguously distinguish SD from NG in the Fe–Cr system: (i) nature of temporal evolution of FWHM of the correlation peak and (ii) appropriate value of γ for fitting with the dynamic scaling model (γ = 6 for SD, Fe–35 at% Cr alloy; γ = 4 for NG, Fe–20 at% Cr alloy).

Incorporating emerging ultrawide bandgap semiconductors with a metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) architecture is highly desired for deep-ultraviolet (DUV) photodetection. However, synthesis-induced defects in semiconductors complicate the rational design of MSM DUV photodetectors due to their dual role as carrier donors and trap centers, leading to a commonly observed trade-off between responsivity and response time. Here, we demonstrate a simultaneous improvement of these two parameters in {\epsilon}-Ga2O3 MSM photodetectors by establishing a low-defect diffusion barrier for directional carrier transport. Specifically, using a micrometer thickness far exceeding its effective light absorption depth, the {\epsilon}-Ga2O3 MSM photodetector achieves over 18-fold enhancement of responsivity and simultaneous reduction of the response time, which exhibits a state-of-the-art photo-to-dark current ratio near 10^8, a superior responsivity of >1300 A/W, an ultrahigh detectivity of >10^16 Jones and a decay time of 123 ms. Combined depth-profile spectroscopic and microscopic analysis reveals the existence of a broad defective region near the lattice-mismatched interface followed by a more defect-free dark region, while the latter one serves as a diffusion barrier to assist frontward carrier transport for substantially enhancing the photodetector performance. This work reveals the critical role of the semiconductor defect profile in tuning carrier transport for fabricating high-performance MSM DUV photodetectors.

Gallium is a plasmonic material offering ultraviolet to near-infrared tunability, facile and scalable preparation, and good stability of nanoparticles. In our contribution, we experimentally demonstrate the link between the shape and size of individual gallium nanoparticles and their optical properties. To this end, we utilize scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy. Lens-shaped gallium nanoparticles with a diameter between 10 nm and 200 nm were grown directly on a silicon nitride membrane using an in-house developed effusion cell operated at ultra-high vacuum conditions. We have experimentally proved that they support localized surface plasmon resonances and their dipole mode can be tuned through their size from ultraviolet to near-infrared spectral region. The measurements are supported by numerical simulations using realistic particle shapes and sizes. Our results open the way for future applications of gallium nanoparticles such as hyperspectral absorption of sunlight in energy harvesting or plasmon-enhanced luminescence of ultraviolet emitters.

We propose a computational protocol for quantum simulations of Fermionic Hamiltonians on a quantum computer, enabling calculations which were previously not feasible with conventional encoding and ansatses of variational quantum eigensolvers (VQE). We combine a qubit-efficient encoding scheme mapping Slater determinants onto qubits with a modified qubit-coupled cluster ansatz and noise-mitigation techniques. Our strategy leads to a substantial improvement in the scaling of circuit gate counts and to a decrease in the number of required variational parameters, thus increasing the resilience to noise. We present results for spin defects of interest for quantum technologies, going beyond minimum models for the negatively charged nitrogen vacancy center in diamond and the double vacancy in 4H silicon carbide (4H-SiC) and tackling a defect as complex as negatively charged silicon vacancy in 4H-SiC for the first time., 36 pages, 8 figures

Artificial intelligence-based methods are becoming increasingly effective at screening libraries of polymers down to a selection that is manageable for experimental inquiry. The vast majority of presently adopted approaches for polymer screening rely on handcrafted chemostructural features extracted from polymer repeat units -- a burdensome task as polymer libraries, which approximate the polymer chemical search space, progressively grow over time. Here, we demonstrate that directly "machine-learning" important features from a polymer repeat unit is a cheap and viable alternative to extracting expensive features by hand. Our approach -- based on graph neural networks, multitask learning, and other advanced deep learning techniques -- speeds up feature extraction by one to two orders of magnitude relative to presently adopted handcrafted methods without compromising model accuracy for a variety of polymer property prediction tasks. We anticipate that our approach, which unlocks the screening of truly massive polymer libraries at scale, will enable more sophisticated and large scale screening technologies in the field of polymer informatics.

{\alpha}-particle irradiated single-crystal isostructural oxide lattices (CmO2, AmO2, CeO2, UO2, NpO2, PuO2, ThO2) were modeled by molecular dynamics simulation method. Lattice parameter changes with IFP cation defects displayed exponential increases. These data were compatible with the available lattice parameter changes with {\alpha}-particle dose experiments. Pre- and post- peaks emerged around principal peaks of irradiated oxide cation-cation radial distribution functions, which indicate obstruction and distortion type defects, respectively. Dependence of lattice dilatations on the number of obstruction type cation defects was examined. In a previous study, obstruction type uranium defects were found to be directly responsible for the UO2 lattice swelling and there was a linear relationship between them. It was also determined that this linear equation has two different slopes at low and high defect concentrations. In this paper, it was found that these phenomena were not specific to UO2 and applicable to all fluorite-structured actinide and lanthanide dioxides studied here. Tin (IV) oxide (SnO2) sols have been synthesized from SnCl2.2H2O precursor solution by applying two different processing conditions. The prepared sols were then deposited on UV-Ozone treated quartz and soda lime glass (SLG) substrates by spin coating. The as-synthesized film was soft-baked at about 100 deg. C. for 10 min. This process was repeated five times to get a compact film, followed by air-annealing at 250 deg. C. for 2 hours. The pristine and annealed films were characterized by UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy, Grazing Incident X-Ray Diffraction (GIXRD), and Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM). The effect of the substrate surface was investigated by measuring the contact angles with De-Ionized (DI) water. UV-Ozone treatment of substrate provides a cleaner surface to grow a homogeneous film. The electrical resistivity of annealed thin films was carried out by a four-point-collinear probe employing the current reversal technique and found in the range of approx. 2x10^3 to 3x10^3 Ohm-cm. Film thickness was found in the range of approx. 137-285 nm, measured by a stylus profilometer. UV-VIs-NIR Transmission data revealed that all the thin film samples showed maximum (82-89) % transmission in the visible range. The optical bandgap of the thin films was estimated to be approx. 3.75-4.00 eV and approx. 3.78-4.35 eV for the films grown on SLG and quartz substrates, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

This paper examines a system of partial differential equations describing dislocation dynamics in a crystalline solid. In particular we consider dynamics linearized about a state of zero stress and use linear semigroup theory to establish existence, uniqueness, and time-asymptotic behavior of the linear system.
