In situ polymerization of monomers was used to prepare graphite-fiber-reinforced polyphenylquinoxaline composites. Six different monomer combinations were investigated. Composite mechanical property retention characteristics were determined at 316 C (600 F) over an extended time period.

Compositions, formulating procedures, and application techniques are presented for highly reflecting stable white paint coatings suitable for the detection of ultraviolet and visible radiations. For completeness, absolute and relative reflectance data are included for intrasystem and intersystem comparisons.

Potassium ion conducting glasses, chemically resistant to potassium, potassium sulfide and sulfur, were made and their possible utility as the membrane material for a potassium/sulfur battery was evaluated. At least one satisfactory candidate was found. It possesses an electrical resistance which makes it usable as a membrane in the form of a fine hollow fiber. It's chemical and electrochemical resistances are excellent. The other aspects of the possible potassium sulfur battery utilizing such fine hollow fibers, including the header (or tube sheet) and a cathode current collector were studied. Several cathode materials were found to be satisfactory. None of the tube sheet materials studied possessed all the desired properties. Multi-fiber cells had very limited life-time due to physical failure of fibers at the fiber/tube sheet junctions.

The concept of grain-boundary-engineering through elimination of the grain-boundary silicate phase in silicon nitride was developed. The process involved removal of the silica from the nitride powder via a thermal treatment coupled with the use of nitride additives to compensate the remaining oxygen. Magnesium and aluminum nitrides are found to be the most effective additive for use as oxygen compensators. Strength decreases at elevated temperatures are not observed in the alumina containing material. The creep rate of a dual additive sialon composition was two orders of magnitude lower at 1400 C than commercial silicon nitride. A cursory analysis of the creep mechanism indicate that grain-boundary sliding is avoided through elimination of the grain-boundary silicate phase.

The behavior of typical rigidized surface insulation material (RSI) under combined loading states was investigated. In particular, the thermal stress states induced during reentry of the space shuttle were of prime concern. A typical RSI tile was analyzed for reentry thermal stresses under computed thermal gradients for a model of the RSI material. The results of the thermal stress analyses were then used to aid in defining typical combined stress states for the failure analysis of RSI.

A study was conducted to fabricate and test angleply composite consisting of NASA-Hough carbon base monofilament in a matrix of 2024 aluminum. The effect of fabrication variables on the tensile properties was determined, and an optimum set of conditions was established. The size of the composite panels was successfully scaled up, and the material was tested to measure tensile behavior as a function of temperature, stress-rupture and creep characteristics at two elevated temperatures, bending fatigue behavior, resistance to thermal cycling, and Izod impact response.

The NASA-Lewis Research Center has determined that a widely available commercially electroplated decorative finish known as black chrome has desirable solar selective properties. Black chrome electroplated coating has high absorbtance in the solar spectrum and low emissivity in the 250 F blackbody thermal spectrum. The spectral reflectance properties of a commercially prepared black chrome on steel have been measured. Values are presented for reflectance of the black chrome, and compared with the reflectance of black paint and with two available samples of black nickel which had been prepared for solar selective properties. The reflectance of black chrome, of the two black nickels, and of black paint integrated over the solar spectrum for air mass 2 were 0.132, 0.123, 0.133, and 0.033, respectively. The reflectance of the black chrome, two black nickels, and of the black paint integrated over the blackbody spectrum for 250 F from 3 to 15 microns are 0.912, 0.934, 0.891, and 0.033, respectively. These reflectance measurements indicate absorptivity-to-emissivity values of 9.8, 13.8, 8.0, and 1.00, respectively.

Both experimental and theoretical studies are presented on spectrum analysis of nuclear quadrupole resonance of antimony and arsenic tellurides. Numerical solutions for secular equations of the quadrupole interaction energy are also discussed.

Results of an experimental and analytical investigation of the compressive strength of unidirectional boron-epoxy composite material are presented. Observation of fiber coordinates in a boron-epoxy composite indicates that the fibers contain initial curvature. Combined axial compression and torsion tests were conducted on boron-epoxy tubes, and it was shown that the shear modulus is a function of axial compressive stress. An analytical model which includes initial curvature in the fibers and permits an estimate of the effect of curvature on compressive strength is proposed. Two modes of failure which may result from the application of axial compressive stress are analyzed, delamination and shear instability. Based on tests and analysis, failure of boron-epoxy under axial compressive load is due to shear instability.

This exploratory program was divided into four basic tasks. The initial phase was devoted toward investigating processing variables associated with previously developed PPO resins. These polymers were derived from p-bis(phenyl glyoxalyl)benzene reacted with 3,3'-diamino benzidine and/or 3,3',4,4'-tetramino benzophenone. Four new phenyl quinoxaline polymers were synthesized and characterized in Tasks 2 and 3. These consisted of a hydroxyl group containing PPQ synthesized from 3,3'-diamino benzidine (DAB), m-bis(phenyl glyoxal)benzene and m-bis(p'-hydroxy phenyl glyoxalyl) benzene; a cyano group containing PPQ from the reaction of DAB and p-bis(p'-cyano phenoxy phenyl glyoxalyl)benzene; an end-capped block copolymer; and a polymer from the reaction of 3,3',4,4'-tetraamino benzo phenone and m-bis(phenyl glyoxalyl)benzene. The latter two polymers were chosen for composite studies in the latter two tasks of the program. Mechanical properties of the graphite reinforced PPQ composites were determined over the temperature range of +21 C to 316 C. Flexural strengths of the HMS graphite fiber composites were in excess of 8.97 X 10 to the 8th power N/sq m (130,000 psi) at +21 C (70 F) with over 50% strength retention at +316 C.

Quenching was used to form compressive surface layers in hot-pressed silicon carbide. The presence of the compressive stresses was verified by slotted rod tests. The slotted rod tip deflection was retained at temperatures to at least 1380 C, showing that the stresses are not relieved immediately at elevated temperatures. The flexural strength and impact resistance of specimens quenched from moderate temperatures (2000 C) were increased. Frequently, specimens quenched from higher temperatures were weakened by thermal shock damage.

The results obtained in an exploratory evaluation of ceramics for automobile thermal reactors are summarized. Candidate ceramic materials were evaluated in several reactor designs by using both engine-dynamometer and vehicle road tests. Silicon carbide contained in a corrugated-metal support structure exhibited the best performance, lasting 1100 hr in engine-dynamometer tests and more than 38,600 km (24000 miles) in vehicle road tests. Although reactors containing glass-ceramic components did not perform as well as those containing silicon carbide, the glass-ceramics still offer good potential for reactor use with improved reactor designs.

A handbook is presented of materials feasible for growth in space in future NASA Missions. Major emphasis was placed on a literature survey concerned with promising materials. Equipment for resistivity and hall effect set-up was procured.

Numerical calculations of the magnitude of external field effects on liquids are presented to describe how external fields can influence the substructure of the field. Quantitative estimates of magnetic and gravitational effects are reported on melts of metals and semiconductors. The results are condensed in tables which contain the input data for calculation of the field effects on diffusion coefficient, solidification rate and for calculation of field forces on individual molecules in the melt.

The experimental work performed thus far has resulted in the preparation of new glass compositions not reported heretofore in the open literature. Recent experiments which have resulted in the formation of 1/4-inch-diameter glass samples from two compositions, suggest that containerless melting and cooling as envisioned for space operations is of real technological significance. To date studies of space glasses have by choice been confined to oxide glasses only. It is felt that the applications for such glasses are more readily predictable than for the other materials, and that many of the principles that will evolve from a study of oxide glasses, which can be melted in air, permit a more direct approach to non-oxide materials in the future. The compositions being studied are all very simple in terms of traditional glass practices, none of them containing more than three major constituents. Future efforts should be concerned with more complex compositions, both to cover a broader range of optical properties and to enhance glass-forming tendencies.

Experiments are summerized on dwelling houses with a view to the creation of efficient warm floors. The experiments concern the types of floors built in Rumania with currently produced materials. At the present time experiments are continuing with solutions based on concrete slabs equipped with a PVC carpet and placed on an elastic layer.

The gage factor and resistivity of p-type silicon doped with beryllium was studied as a function of temperature, crystal orientation, and beryllium doping concentration. It was shown that the temperature coefficient of resistance can be varied and reduced to zero near room temperature by varying the beryllium doping level. Similarly, the magnitude of the piezoresistance gage factor for beryllium-doped silicon is slightly larger than for silicon doped with a shallow acceptor impurity such as boron, whereas the temperature coefficient of piezoresistance is about the same for material containing these two dopants. These results are discussed in terms of a model for the piezoresistance of compensated p-type silicon.

Only immiscible materials which involve a fluid phase have a potential advantage when considered for space processing. Processing of such systems at low gravity can lead to a material which is very homogeneous and contains a finely dispersed mixture of phases. Materials with such structures may exhibit potentially useful properties for such applications as superconductors, dispersion-strengthened materials, superplastic materials, permanent magnets, etc. These conclusions have resulted from review of past efforts in the field of low-g processing of materials containing a liquid phase miscibility gap and from present efforts dealing with such systems. These studies have concentrated on precipitation of liquid droplets in a host liquid during cooling through the miscibility gap. This effort has been to study the agglomeration of the droplets both experimentally and through computer simulation in order to understand the mechansism involved and to deduce the effect of gravity on the droplet distribution and resulting structure of the solidified material. The agglomeration mechanisms treated in detail are those due to diffusional growth and collision processes caused by Stokes on convection current-induced droplet migration.

Manufacture of chalcogenide glasses in space will eliminate many of the causes of optical non-homogeneity and contamination that are inherent in earth-bound manufacture. A program is outlined to demonstrate the feasibility of various techniques and processes that will be utilized to manufacture chalcogenide glasses in space. Amorphous character, purity, and homogeneity parameters are being investigated at various stages of the glass forming process. These parameters in merit index form will serve to provide guidelines for the design of the actual melting experiment in space, and for the optimization of the exact chalcogenide composition to be included in the space experiments.

Elevated temperature (1000 C (1832 F)) vacuum fatigue tests have been conducted on uncoated and aluminide (PWA 45) coated cobalt-base MAR-M-302 alloy with the four different types of thermalmechanical reversed inelastic strain cycles (wave shapes) defined by the method of strainrange partitioning. Results of these tests indicated two major conclusions. First, there was no significant influence of the aluminide coating on the thermal-mechanical fatigue life of the MAR-M-302 alloy. Second, variations in the type of thermal-mechanical fatigue cycle applied caused significant variations of fatigue life for both coated and uncoated material. The longest lives were achieved with sigma sub pp type cycling, while the sigma sub cc cycle caused a reduction of fatigue life of about 1/2 order of magnitude with respect to the sigma sub pp life. The sigma sub cp type cycle caused a life reduction of between 1-1/2 and 2 orders of magnitude relative to the sigma sub pp life, while the sigma sub pc type cycle provided a fatigue life which appeared to be comparable to that generated by the sigma sub cc cycle.

Usually it is expensive to obtain suitable damping coefficients for exterior and interior walls made up of light materials. Hence, acoustic protection problems must be tackled in parallel with the design and introduction of new types of elements. A comparison of classical solutions shows that interior separating walls raise the most difficult problems. In order to reduce building costs it is necessary to make a careful study of architectural solutions and to provide for wall structures with characteristics that vary with the particular case.

The inadequacy is considered of characterizing a vibration insulating material by its dynamic modulus of elasticity as determined by the resonance method. It is shown that the dynamic modulus of elasticity actually depends on the material's loading speed as well as on the volume of the load, so that it is necessary to determine its variation as a function of the two parameters. The needed values are to be derived for actual conditions of use.

The problems and opportunities in the nondestructive evaluation of composites are covered in formal papers and a summary of the discussion which took place at a Workshop held in Dayton on February 13-14, 1974. The recommendations arrived at by an NMAB Committee, on flaw detection, composite strength, standardization and design information, and research on composite degradation are stated.

The strength properties of magnesium-lithium alloys at room, low, and high temperatures are investigated. It is found that the alloys may have practical application at ambient temperatures up to 100 C, that negative temperatures have a favorable influence on the alloy strength, and that cyclic temperature variations have practically no effect on the strength characteristics. The influence of chemical coatings on corrosion resistance of the MgLi alloys is examined. Several facilities based on pressure casting machines, low-pressure casting machines, and magnetodynamic pumps were designed for producing MgLi alloy castings. Results were obtained for MgLi alloys reinforced with fibers having a volumetric content of 15%.

The absorption characteristics of several fibrous materials of the Owens Corning 700 Fiberglas Series were measured to determine the variation in impedance as a function of incident angle of the sound wave. The results, indicate that the fibrous absorbents behave as extended reacting materials. The poor agreement between measurement and theory for sound absorption based on the parameters of flow resistance and porosity indicates that this theory does not adequately predict the acoustic behavior of fibrous materials. A much better agreement with measured results is obtained for values calculated from the bulk acoustic parameters of the material.

A supporting frame for a load, such as one or more telescopes, is isolated from all multi-gravitational forces, which will be developed within that load as that load is propelled into space, by using a shroud to fully and solidly hold that load until that load has been propelled into space. Thereafter, that shroud will be jettisoned; and then supports which are on, and which are movable with, that load will have surfaces thereon moved into supporting engagement with complementary surfaces on that supporting frame to enable that supporting frame and those supports to fully and solidly hold that load.

Experiments were performed to critically demonstrate the effects of diffusion on the aluminum depletion and degradation of NiAl coatings on superalloys. Pack aluminized IN 100 and Mar-M200 were diffusion annealed in 5 mtorr vacuum at 1100 C for 300 hr. Aluminum losses due to oxidation and vaporization were minimal. Metallographic and electron microprobe analyses showed considerable interdiffusion of the coating with the substrate, which caused a large decrease in the original aluminum level of the coating. Subsequent cyclic furnace oxidation tests were performed at 1100 C using 1 hr cycles on prediffused and as-coated specimens. The prediffusion treatment decreased the oxidation and as-coated specimens. The prediffusion treatment decreased the oxidation protection for both alloys, but more dramatically for IN 100. Identical oxidation tests of bulk NiAl, where such diffusion effects are precluded, showed no signs of degradation at twice the time needed to degrade the coated superalloys.

The thermochemical response of Coating 313 when exposed to a fuel fire environment was studied to provide a tool for predicting the reaction time. The existing Aerotherm Charring Material Thermal Response and Ablation (CMA) computer program was modified to treat swelling materials. The modified code is now designated Aerotherm Transient Response of Intumescing Materials (TRIM) code. In addition, thermophysical property data for Coating 313 were analyzed and reduced for use in the TRIM code. An input data sensitivity study was performed, and performance tests of Coating 313/steel substrate models were carried out. The end product is a reliable computational model, the TRIM code, which was thoroughly validated for Coating 313. The tasks reported include: generation of input data, development of swell model and implementation in TRIM code, sensitivity study, acquisition of experimental data, comparisons of predictions with data, and predictions with intermediate insulation.

The possibilities of using the low-gravity space environment for the processing of directionally solidified materials in order to remove the limitations imposed by the L-g earth environment have led to a careful evaluation of the directional solidification process and the results commonly obtained. Defects in the regularity of the microstructure have been identified as one of the most important areas where present processing technology needs to be improved. One-g environment material processing must also be carefully characterized before it can be determined if zero-g processing will produce significant benefits in eutectic and off-eutectic solidification. It is suggested that a combination of experimental and analytical thermal studies will be required to optimize the solidification process in order to minimize the structural defects which occur due to present processing techniques.

The microstructure and some microstructural effects of oxidation have been investigated for laminar carbon fiber cloth/cloth binder matrix composite materials. It was found that cloth wave is important in determining the macrostructure of the composites X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the composites were more graphitic than the constituent fiber phases, indicating a graphitic binder matrix phase. Various tests which were conducted to investigate specific properties of the material are described. It was learned that under the moderate temperature and oxidant flow conditions studied, C-700, 730 materials exhibit superior oxidation resistance primarily because of the inhibiting influence of the graphitized binder matrix.

Processing techniques and design data were characterized for a graphite/epoxy composite system that is useful from 75 K to 450 K, and a graphite/polyimide composite system that is useful from 75 K to 589 K. The Monsanto 710 polyimide resin was selected as the resin to be characterized and used with the graphite fiber reinforcement. Material was purchased using the prepreg specification for the design data generation for both the HT-S/710 and HM-S/710 graphite/polyimide composite system. Lamina and laminate properties were determined at 75 K, 297 K, and 589 K. The test results obtained on the skin-stringer components proved that graphite/polyimide composites can be reliably designed and analyzed much like graphite/epoxy composites. The design data generated in the program includes the standard static mechanical properties, biaxial strain data, creep, fatigue, aging, and thick laminate data.

Large-diameter carbon composite monofilaments with high strength and high modulus were produced by pregging multifiber carbon bundles with suitable organic resins and pyrolysing them together. Two approaches were developed to increase the utilization of fiber tensile strength by minimizing stress concentration defects induced by dissimilar shrinkage during pyrolysis. These were matrix modification to improve char yield and strain-to-failure and fiber-matrix copyrolysis to alleviate matrix cracking. Highest tensile strength and modulus were obtained by heat treatments to 2873 K to match fiber and matrix strain-to-failure and develop maximum monofilament tensile-strength and elastic modulus.

An evaluation of the thermal and mechanical properties was performed on a molded low-density elastomeric ablation material designated as Material B. Both the virgin and charred states were examined to provide meaningful inputs to the design of a thermal protection system. Chars representative of the flight chars formed during ablation were prepared in a laboratory furnace from 600 K to 1700 K and properties of effective thermal conductivity, heat capacity, porosity and permeability were determined on the furnace chars formed at various temperature levels within the range. This provided a boxing of the data which will enable the prediction of the transient response of the material during flight ablation.

A material consisting of ripstop nylon bonded to the Mylar side of aluminized Mylar film was used to construct the first Skylab parasol. The mechanical properties of elongation and tensile strength and the radiative properties of solar absorptance and thermal emittance were measured before and after exposure to simulated solar radiation at intensities of 1.0 and 3.5 solar constants for exposure times as long as 947 hours or 3316 equivalent solar hours. The accelerated testing indicated more severe degradation than was experienced in the real-time test (1 solar constant). The results predicted that this material could have given satisfactory performance throughout the planned lifetime of the Skylab workshop.

The effects of particle size on the optical properties and surface roughness of a glass-balloon-filled, carbon-pigmented paint were studied in order to develop a diffuse-reflecting, low-total-reflectance, low-outgassing black paint. Particle sizes ranged between 20 microns and 74 microns. Surface roughness was found to increase with increasing particle size. Relative total reflectance at near-normal incidence (MgO standard) of the filled paints was less than for the unfilled paint between 230 nm and 1800 nm. Total absolute reflectance at 546 nm decreased with increasing particle size at grazing angles of incidence. Near-normal, total emittance was greater for the filled paints than for the unfilled paint. Specularity decreased with increasing particle size over the range studied.

A study was conducted to develop a ceramics handbook defining properties and parameters necessary for thermostructural design. Continuing efforts toward this goal, and in particular toward the evolution of a reliable predictor of fracture from current literature, are described.

The feasibility of a new approach for the development of stable, easily handled, room temperature (293 K - 311 K) curing adhesives was studied and demonstrated. The work concentrated on a family of unsaturated amide/ester resins. Twelve candidate resins were synthesized and tested for completeness of cure at room temperature, adhesion to aluminum and titanium, shear strength, moisture resistance and heat stability. The three most promising candidate resins were selected and recommended for further development.

A measurement technique was devised which permits direct observation of the magnetic entropy of solids as a function of applied magnetic field. Measurements were made of the magnetic entropy, in the temperature range 2 to 20 K, of polycrystalline samples of dysprosium titanium oxide (Dy2Ti2O7) to determine its suitability for use as the working substance of a magnetic refrigerator. Magnetization measurements were also made at 4.2 K and below to provide additional information on the nature of the compound. The measurements indicated that crystalline electric fields perturbed the ground state of the dysprosium ions, removed the 16-fold degeneracy predicted by Hund's rules, and left only a twofold degeneracy in its place. A positive, temperature independent contribution to the magnetization was observed in the saturation region, which indicated that the doublet ground-state wave function was perturbed by a nearby unpopulated upper energy level.

Plasma-sprayed composites, which have good oxidation resistance and self-lubricating characteristics to 900 C, were developed. The composites are a nichrome matrix containing dispersed glass for oxidation protection and calcium fluoride for lubrication; they are applied to bearing surfaces by plasma spraying layers about 0.050 cm thick which are then machined to 0.025 cm. Oscillating bearing tests were performed in air to 900 C at unit radial loads up to 5000 psi and a thrust load of 440 lb. Bearings with a composite liner in the bore were in good condition after over 50,000 oscillating cycles accumulated during repeated bearing temperature cycles between 25 and 900 C.

An airlock for use in transferring waste objects from a positively pressurized enclosure aboard an operative space vehicle, to a waste receiver attached to the vehicle and maintained at the negative pressure of a celestial space environment. The airlock is characterized by a shell having an internal chamber and hermetically sealed within an opening formed in a bulkhead of the enclosure. The shell is provided with an insertion hatch adjacent to the enclosure, and an ejection hatch adjacent the waste receiver, each of the hatches being hermetically sealed by a hatch cover supported for deployment to a hatch-opening disposition through a manipulation of a hatch-deploying mechanism. A three-way selector valve is coupled with the deploying mechanism and ported to an internal chamber of the shell, the enclosure, and the environment and is provided for alternately coupling the chamber with the enclosure and the receiver, in direct communication, in response to a manipulation of the mechanism whereby a sequence is imposed on the operation of the airlock.

Tests were conducted to determine the damaging effects of rain erosion on optically transparent materials. The rotating arm test equipment used for the tests is described. Typical transparent materials such as those found in windshields, infrared windows, lasers, and television systems were tested. Nominal velocities of 400, 500, and 600 miles per hour and rainfall conditions of one inch per hour simulated rainfall were used in the tests. It was determined that an 80 percent reduction in laser transmittance can occur in plastics submitted to rain erosion. Significant results of the environmental tests are explained.

The technique of differential thermal analysis (DTA) was applied to the study of the Apollo 17 orange soil (74220,63) and the Apollo 16 glass coated anorthite (64455,21). These glasses show accentuated exotherms of strain relief in the annealing range which is indicative of rapid cooling. These are amenable to interpretation by comparison to the known history of synthetic glasses. Synthetic glasses were prepared whose similarity in behavior between the lunar glasses and their synthetic analogs is striking. Approximate rates of cooling of the lunar glasses were determined from comparative DTA of lunar and synthetic glasses and from the determination of the relation of strain relief in the annealing range to quench rate. At higher temperatures the glasses show exotherms of crystallization. The crystallization products associated with the exothermic reactions have been identified by X-ray diffraction and the surface morphologies developed by strain relief and crystallization have been characterized with scanning electron microscopy.

Design, manufacture and testing of laminated and coated composite materials incorporating a structural matrix of Kevlar are reported in detail. The practicality of using Kevlar in aerostat materials is demonstrated and data are provided on practical weaves, lamination and coating particulars, rigidity, strength, weight, elastic coefficients, abrasion resistance, crease effects, peel strength, blocking tendencies, helium permeability, and fabrication techniques. Properties of the Kevlar based materials are compared with conventional, Dacron reinforced counterparts. A comprehensive test and qualification program is discussed and quantitative biaxial tensile and shear test data are provided. The investigation shows that single ply laminates of Kevlar and plastic films offer significant strength to weight improvements, are less permeable than two ply coated materials, but have a lower flex life.

A survey of radome failure problems in military aircraft under actual operating conditions was conducted. The aircraft were operating from aircraft carriers in the Pacific Ocean. Critical problem areas were identified and a plan was developed for failure prevention. The development and application of repair kits for correcting the erosion damage are reported. It is stated that the rain erosion damage survey established a strong justification for qualification testing of all materials and designs which may have questionable life expectancy on the aircraft.

The characteristics of thin, pyrolytically deposited films for protection of surfaces from oxidation and abrasion are discussed. The limitations of depositing erosion resistant films are described. Environmental tests of first stage compressor blades in a T-58 engine after coating with a thin film were conducted. Photographic examples of the effectiveness of the thin films in protecting the turbine blades are provided. Methods for operating a sputtering system and the equipment used for film deposition are defined.

Damping results are presented for an elastometric ablation material bonded to an aluminum alloy substrate. Tests were conducted on aluminum beams 0.159, 0.318, and 0.476 cm thick, and with and without an ablator. Ablation-material thickness varied from 0.159 to 0.953 cm. Comparative damping data were obtained by using variations of the free-free beam technique with strain gages and piezoelectric transducers. Of the two test arrangements employed, the technique using strain gages produced results that indicated less restraint of the beams. Ablation material, in thicknesses less than 1 cm, substantially increased the damping parameter of the aluminum beams.

A series of coatings was developed for the space shuttle type silica fiber insulation system and characterized for optical and physical properties. Reentry simulation tests were run using a radiant panel and also using a hypersonic plasma arc. The coatings produced had improved physical and optical properties as well as greater reuse capability over the GE version of the JSC-0042 coating.

A method is described involving the measurement of the viscous desolidification (pour) point of wax-free lubricant fluids. This method is especially useful for pour point testing of experimental quantities, since only six to sixteen drops of the oil are required for a single determination (automatically performed in duplicate) with nearly full recovery of the sample. The technique consists of: (1) rapidly freezing a small, predetermined amount of the oil on the side of a small test tube to form a frozen drop of given dimensions; (2) immersing duplicates of the charged and stoppered tubes into a cold bath; and (3) measuring the temperature when the drop front has moved a predetermined distance as the bath warms up.

Various properties of ceramic materials were investigated. Magnesium oxide and the role of anion impurities were investigated together with the slow crack growth in silicon nitride-silicon carbide ceramics. The oxide program involved development of fabrication techniques for anion doped materials and evaluation of the role of these anions in the hot pressing response, grain boundary diffusion of nickel doped material, grain boundary microhardness, and grain growth. The carbide-nitride work employed commercial materials and the research involved evaluation of a recently reported technique for study of slow crack growth and the development of data for these commercial materials.
