The aim of this thesis was to improve workload forecasting for delivery projects of the target company. The company was especially interested in improving the long term forecast. For this purpose, the sales phase information was analysed. The aim was to identify relevant information concerning the workload forecast. Further development of the sales phase information was also considered in order to improve predictability of workload forecast. This thesis includes a short description of general characteristics of forecasting and an overview of different types of forecasting methods. The mathematical theory of linear regression model was illustrated in more detail, including the study of multivariate models and the least-squares method which is a commonly used technique for estimating model coefficients. The use of indicator variables in the regression model was introduced, as well as various parameters used for describing the performance of the model. These parameters can be used for comparing different regression models in order to select the model with greater prediction ability. While collecting data, it became apparent that sales phase data and workload reports were incompatible. Thus, it was not possible to create workload forecast model based on the sales phase data. Instead, the data was used for creating sales forecast models which predict the amount of hours to be sold. The attempt of creating forecast models at monthly level was unsuccessful, as there were too many fluctuations in sales volumes for individual months. Also the frequent changes in booking days of sales offers made monthly forecasting difficult. However, regression models were successfully created for total sales of three-month periods. In addition to the regression models, similar forecasting models were developed by means of a statistical analysis based on the changes in the state of individual offers. The models gave similar, but not identical, results as linear regression models regardless of the coefficients being significantly different from the ones of regression models. Further statistical study of individual offers will be required in order to create better understanding of the results of different models. It would also be useful to consider alternative ways of forming regression models to predict contradiction with statistical approach. Finally, a preliminary workload estimate was designed based on the three-month period forecast models. Since comparable workload data was not available, the estimate was mostly based on assumptions. However, this preliminary estimate was thought to be useful for the further development of the workload forecast, especially if the company decides to develop sales phase data in order to support more accurate workload forecasting. The models can also be improved if more comparable workload data can be obtained. The impact of different variables can also be studied more closely in respect of individual offers.
