The diversity and taxonomy of anodontine species in Lake Baikal and Transbaikalia region has been contentious since it is based on a typological species concept, the so called "Comparatory Method". Using this method, six Comparatory anodontine species have been described for the study area as belonging to the genus Colletopterum. This genus was separated from Anodonta based on shell characteristics and further split into two subgenera, i.e. Colletopterum sensu stricto and Colletopterum (Piscinaliana). However, many authors do not recognize this separation maintaining all Colletopterum forms within Anodonta. The current study clarifies the taxonomy and systematics of Anodontinae in this region, using a combination of molecular, morphological and anatomical data. All previously recognized Comparatory forms are here recognized as a single species, i.e. Anodonta anatina.

We determined the amphipod population characteristics from the water bodies of the delta of the Selenga River, where Gammarus lacustris Sars, 1863 was industrially harvested until the 1990s. In 2011, the population density of G. lacustris varied from 80 to 10 200 in Lapkhai Lake and from 80 to 2320 ind./m2 in Krivaya Channel. The low population density (< 40 ind./m2) in Gryaznoe Lake, together with the absence of the species in the waters of the former Zhilishchenskoe Lake, confirms the indications of population density decline in the associated waters of the delta. Population growth of G. lacustris was limited primarily by changes in the hydromorphology of the lakes and waterways due to floods of the early 1990s and the subsequent period of extremely low flow of the Selenga River.

The data on Gammarus lacustris Sars, 1863 ecology in Transbaikalian water bodies was integrated by the example of Lakes Khalanda, Bain-Tsagan, Arakhlei, Zun-Torei, and Bain-Bulak. The impact of the major environmental factor on the pattern of G. lacustris spatial distribution, linear size, growth rate, time of reaching sexual maturity, and number of reproduced generations was shown. The role of G. lacustris in the ecosystem of studied water bodies was evaluated and the adaptive significance of the revealed life strategies was considered.

A survey in the basin of the Khilok River (a right tributary of the Selenga River) in 1999-2002 allowed us to reveal and describe the consortia of cyanobacteria Stratonostoc linckia f. linckia and Stratonostoc verrucosum, green alga Cladophora aegagropila, stonewort Nitella opaca, water moss Fontinalis sp., and duckweed Lemna trisulca. The relationship between the consort organisms and edificator plants can become the limiting factor in these communities. The long-term studies of the benthic communities of the Arakhlei Lake demonstrate the significance of the consortium approach in the long-term prediction of changes in the lake ecosystem.
