Abstract

We report a systematic study on the growth conditions of Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te thin films by molecular beam epitaxy for maximization of superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$. Careful tuning of the flux ratios of Sn, In, and Te enables us to find an optimum condition for substituting rich In content ($x$ = 0.66) into Sn site in a single phase of Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te beyond the bulk solubility limit at ambient pressure ($x$ = 0.5). $T_\mathrm{c}$ shows a dome-shaped dependence on In content $x$ with the highest $T_\mathrm{c}$ = 4.20 K at $x$ = 0.55, being consistent to that reported for bulk crystals. The well-regulated Sn$_{1-x}$In$_x$Te films can be a useful platform to study possible topological superconductivity by integrating them into the state-of-the-art junctions and/or proximity-coupled devices., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

10. In situ synchrotron XAS study of the decomposition kinetics of ZDDP triboreactive interfaces

Abstract

One of the major obstacles in replacing the widely used zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) antiwear additive with a more environmentally friendly one is the difficulty of time-resolving the surface species resulting from its decomposition mechanism under high contact pressure and temperature. To tackle this issue, a newly developed miniature pin-on-disc tribotester was coupled with synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to perform in situ tribological tests while examining the composition of the formed triboreactive films. The results showed that in the case of bare steel surfaces the initial decomposition products are mainly zinc sulfate species, which with further shearing and heating are reduced to zinc sulfide mixed with metal oxides. The mixed base layer seems to enhance the tenacity of the subsequently formed zinc phosphate layers composing the main bulk of the protective triboreactive film. This base layer was not observed in the case of coated substrates with hydrogenated diamond-like carbon (a-C:H DLC) coating, which results in the formation of less durable films of small volume barely covering the contacting surfaces and readily removed by shear. Comprehensive decomposition pathways and kinetics for the ZDDP triboreactive films are proposed, which enable the control and modification of the ZDDP triboreactive films.

Abstract

We have investigated the charge transport in thin films of correlated Dirac semimetal of perovskite CaIrO3 by measurements of resistivity and optical spectra. The semimetallic transport of either electron-type or hole-type carrier is observed in the strain-relaxed thin films. By controlling the strain relaxation via thermal annealing, the carrier density decreases in both n-type and p-type samples, while enhancing the carrier mobility up to 160 cm2 V−1 s−1 at an electron density of 2.5 × 1018 cm−3 at 2 K. We propose that the energy of Dirac line node, which locates in proximity to the Fermi level, varies with the lattice distortion or strain-sensitive defect character, causing the sign change in the charge carrier as well as the mobility enhancement. 25. Effect of polar groups in lubricants on sliding speed dependent friction coefficients of DLC coatings.

Abstract

The speed dependent friction coefficients of two types of DLC coatings, a-C:H and ta-C, were evaluated when lubricated with 1-hexadecene, which did not contain any functional group, and with oleic acid and oleyl alcohol that did. The friction coefficient measured for ta-C at a low sliding speed of 0·01 mm s−1 with the 1-hexadecene lubricant that did not contain any functional group was 0·22, which was higher than the value of 0·11 seen for a-C:H. The friction coefficients measured for a-C:H and ta-C at a high sliding speed of 50 mm s−1 with 1-hexadecene were 0·10 and 0·06 respectively. The friction coefficients measured with oleic acid and oleyl alcohol were 0·02 for a-C:H and less than 0·001 for ta-C. The results showed that the friction coefficient of ta-C was more strongly influenced by the functional group in the lubricants than that of a-C:H. It is assumed that this difference between the two coatings can be attributed to a difference in the capability to form a tribochemical reacted film under boundary lubrication. Under mixed lubrication, differences in lubricity also affected this friction coefficient difference, in addition to the properties of the tribochemical reacted film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

SSF-126, (E)-2-methoxyimino-N-methyl-2-(2-phenoxyphenyl)acetamide, inhibited mycelial growth (IC50 7 7 μM) of Pyricularia oryzae. The inhibited mycelium, which was incubated for 30 h in the presence of SSF-126. grew vigorously after transfer to a fungicide-free medium, indicating that SSF-126 is a fungistatic compound. SSF-126 strongly inhibited oxygen consumption by P. oryzae at low concentrations (IC50 0.8 μM). However, the initial inhibition of oxygen consumption was followed by normal mycelial respiration that was insensitive to SSF-126, These results suggest that SSF-126 has new type of antifungal action. Abstract

The paper proposes a new model of chip forming process in three dimensional cutting with single point tool, in which the process is interpreted as a piling up of orthogonal cuttings along the cutting edge. Based upon the proposed model, an energy method similar to the upper bound approach, which enables to predict the chip formation and the three components of cutting force by using only the orthogonal cutting data, is developed. The method is also applied to predict chip formation and cutting force in oblique cutting, plain milling, and groove cutting operations.
