Soft matrices with tuned properties are part of the vast landscape of innovative materials for the restoration of works of art. “Twin chain” polymer networks (TC‐PNs) based on polyvinyl alcohol have proven unique as scaffolds for Cultural Heritage cleaning. They enable optimum adaptability, adhesion, porosity, and connectivity at both micro‐ and nano‐scale resulting in superior time/space‐controlled cleaning operations. In this work, TC‐PNs properties are tuned through a mild crosslinking of the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)‐porogen polymer by using sebacic, adipic, or succinic acid. The modified porogens have different structural features imparting a different phase behavior to TC‐PVAs mixtures in aqueous solution, i.e., in pre‐gel systems used to form gels through a liquid–liquid phase separation. The macro‐, micro‐, and nanoscale features of the final gels are characterized by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, Small Angle X‐ray Scattering, Rheology and are related to their cleaning performances. The study shows that the gels cleaning capacity is related to their tortuosity, that can be tailored at the nanoscale. Counterintuitively gels with higher tortuosity show better performances as evidenced by the cleaning of mockups and paintings from Jean Helion, Jackson Pollock, and Tancredi Parmeggiani at Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice. Helicoverpa armigera, the cotton bollworm moth, is one of the world's most important crop pests, and is spreading throughout the New World from its original range in the Old World. In Brazil, invasive H. armigera has been reported to hybridize with local populations of Helicoverpa zea. The correct identification of H. armigera-H. zea hybrids is important in understanding the origin, spread and future outlook for New World regions that are affected by outbreaks, given that hybridization can potentially facilitate H. zea pesticide resistance and host plant range via introgression of H. armigera genes. Here, we present a genome admixture analysis of high quality genome sequences generated from two H. armigera-H. zea F1 hybrids generated in two different labs. Our admixture pipeline predicts 48.8% and 48.9% H. armigera for the two F1 hybrids, confirming its accuracy. Genome sequences from five H. zea and one H. armigera that were generated as part of the study show no evidence of hybridization. Interestingly, we show that four H. zea genomes generated from a previous study are predicted to possess a proportion of H. armigera genetic material. Using unsupervised clustering to identify non-hybridized H. armigera and H. zea genomes, 8511 ancestry informative markers (AIMs) were identified. Their relative frequencies are consistent with a minor H. armigera component in the four genomes, however its origin remains to be established. We show that the size and quality of genomic reference datasets are critical for accurate hybridization prediction. Consequently, we discuss potential pitfalls in genome admixture analysis of H. armigera-H. zea hybrids, and suggest measures that will improve such analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article describes a case study of a 70-year-old woman who presented with acute onset blurred vision and subsequently developed symptoms of left hemispheric dysfunction, including aphasia, right gaze palsy, and right hemiplegia. The initial diagnostic work-up ruled out intracranial hemorrhage and large vessel occlusion. However, the patient's symptoms spontaneously improved and then worsened, leading to the discovery of an acute bilateral thalamic infarction. The authors suggest that the transient and side-changing nature of the symptoms may be due to a temporary disruption of thalamo-cortical networks rather than pure anatomical damage. Thalamic infarction should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of acute onset hemispheric dysfunction. [Extracted from the article]

Aldehydes fixation was accidentally discovered in the early 20th century and soon became a widely adopted practice in the histological field, due to an excellent staining enhancement in tissues imaging. However, the fixation process itself entails cell proteins denaturation and crosslinking. The possible presence of artifacts, that depends on the specific system under observation, must therefore be considered to avoid data misinterpretation. This contribution takes advantage of scanning electron assisted-dielectric microscopy (SE-ADM) and Raman 2D imaging to reveal the possible presence and the nature of artifacts in unstained, and paraformldehyde, PFA, fixed MNT-1 cells. The high resolution of the innovative SE-ADM technique allowed the identification of globular protein clusters in the cell cytoplasm, formed after protein denaturation and crosslinking. Concurrently, SE-ADM images showed a preferential melanosome adsorption on the cluster’s outer surface. The micron-sized aggregates were discernible in Raman 2D images, as the melanosomes signal, extracted through 2D principal component analysis, unequivocally mapped their location and distribution within the cells, appearing randomly distributed in the cytoplasm. Protein clusters were not observed in living MNT-1 cells. In this case, mature melanosomes accumulate preferentially at the cell periphery and are more closely packed than in fixed cells. Our results show that, although PFA does not affect the melanin structure, it disrupts melanosome distribution within the cells. Proteins secondary structure, conversely, is partially lost, as shown by the Raman signals related to α-helix, β-sheets, and specific amino acids that significantly decrease after the PFA treatment. Simple Summary: To determine the use of differential somatic cell count as an indicator of mammary health in sheep, the receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis approach was used to find a threshold value that can be used to discriminate healthy animals from those with a probable intramammary infection. This threshold will enhance the precision of diagnosing mammary gland inflammation in dairy sheep. Differential somatic cell count (DSCC), the percentage of somatic cell count (SCC) due to polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and lymphocytes (LYMs), is a promising effective diagnostic marker for dairy animals with infected mammary glands. Well-explored in dairy cows, DSCC is also potentially valid in sheep, where clinical and subclinical mastitis outbreaks are among the principal causes of culling. We pioneered the application of DSCC in dairy ewes by applying receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to define the most accurate thresholds to facilitate early discrimination of sheep with potential intramammary infection (IMI) from healthy animals. We tested four predefined SCC cut-offs established in previous research. Specifically, we applied SCC cut-offs of 265 × 103 cells/mL, 500 × 103 cells/mL, 645 × 103 cells/mL, and 1000 × 103 cells/mL. The performance of DSCC as a diagnostic test was assessed by examining sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and area under curve (AUC) analyses. The designated threshold value for DSCC in the detection of subclinical mastitis is established at 79.8%. This threshold exhibits Se and Sp of 0.84 and 0.81, accompanied by an AUC of 0.88. Management of COVID-19 patients experiencing persisting respiratory failure despite corticosteroids remains challenging. Data on high-dose intravenous anakinra (HD-ANK) in this context are lacking. We aimed to investigate the impact of HD-ANK on mortality in COVID-19 patients progressing to non-invasive ventilation (NIV) while receiving corticosteroids. We retrospectively analyzed the impact of HD-ANK on 28-day mortality in individuals hospitalized with COVID-19 necessitating NIV after corticosteroid initiation. A total of 256 patients were identified: 146 received standard-of-care only (SOC), and 110 received HD-ANK+SOC. The groups were well-balanced at baseline. In-hospital mortality at 28 days did not differ between the two groups. HD-ANK is not beneficial in patients with severe COVID-19 deteriorating despite corticosteroids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent studies reported increased plasma glial acidic fibrillary protein (GFAP) levels in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients compared to controls. We expanded these findings in a larger cohort, including 156 ALS patients and 48 controls, and investigated the associations of plasma GFAP with clinical variables and other biofluid biomarkers. Plasma GFAP and Alzheimer's disease (AD) cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers were assessed by the single molecule array and the Lumipulse platforms, respectively. In ALS patients, plasma GFAP was higher than in controls (p < 0.001) and associated with measures of cognitive decline. Twenty ALS patients (12.8%) showed a positive amyloid status (A+), of which nine also exhibited tau pathology (A+T+, namely ALS-AD). ALS-AD patients showed higher plasma GFAP than A− ALS participants (p < 0.001) and controls (p < 0.001), whereas the comparison between A− ALS and controls missed statistical significance (p = 0.07). Plasma GFAP distinguished ALS-AD subjects more accurately (area under the curve (AUC) 0.932 ± 0.027) than plasma p-tau181 (AUC 0.692 ± 0.058, p < 0.0001) and plasma neurofilament light chain protein (AUC, 0.548 ± 0.088, p < 0.0001). Cognitive measures differed between ALS-AD and other ALS patients. AD co-pathology deeply affects plasma GFAP values in ALS patients. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a neglected endemic mycosis in Latin America. Most cases occur in Brazil. It is classified as PCM infection and PCM disease and is subdivided into chronic (adult type) or acute (juvenile type) disease, with the latter being less frequent and more severe. In 2016, we reported an increase in the numbers of patients diagnosed with acute PCM after a highway's construction. We conducted a study at INI-Fiocruz, a reference center for infectious diseases, including endemic mycoses, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, aiming to deepen the analysis of this new clinical and epidemiological profile of PCM. The authors developed a retrospective study including 170 patients diagnosed with PCM between 2010 and 2019. There was an increase in the number of atypical and severe forms, starting in 2014. In subsequent years, we detected a higher incidence of adverse outcomes with patients requiring more hospitalizations and an increased mortality rate. We estimate that PCM has become more severe throughout the Rio de Janeiro state, affecting a greater number of young individuals and leading to a greater number of and longer hospitalizations. Surveillance measures and close monitoring of future notification data in the state, with emphasis on children, adolescents, and young adults are necessary for a better understanding of the perpetuation of this public health challenge. In this phase, several studies were developed, which have led to new micro-rough surfaces capable of improving the adhesion of the bone to the implant defined by the Bone to Implant Contact percentage (BIC) with a relevant time reduction in osseointegration [[7]]. During the 1990s, the patients' requests to obtain an immediate loading implant rehabilitation promoted several studies in developing innovative surfaces- micro- and nano-roughness characteristics through the use of new technologies for the production of implant surfaces. Additionally, the development of innovative materials and bio-materials will provide more efficient and effective ways of promoting and improving bone and soft tissue response in physiological and pathological conditions towards implants or prostheses. After these results, several researchers have developed clinical studies able to promote early-loading implant rehabilitations related to innovative technological developments both of the intra-osseous macroscopic component of the implants and of the extra-osseous macroscopic component in connection with the prosthesis [[8]]. The cord blood platelet gel (CBPG), rich in growth factors and chemoattractans molecules, is a useful tool to treat lesions with tissue loss as it accelerates remission and ensures the functional recovery of the limb. The results obtained in a series of 10 patients treated at the "Fondazione IRCCS Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" in San Giovanni Rotondo (Italy) with CBPG in the treatment of revascularized patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) are presented here. In the period 2017-2021, they were treated with surgical toileting of the ulcers and application of CBPG. As a general scheme, CBPG was applied once every 21 days for 3 times; 8 out of 10 patients observed had diabetes mellitus, of these 4 were on insulin therapy. One patient underwent a major amputation; two patients died for non-infectious causes. Studies in the literature show that CBPG is safe for patients affected by CLTI and undergoing revascularization, promoting faster healing. Our results appear to overlap this data, also showing CBPG as an effective therapeutic option for the treatment of vascularized patients with foot lesions for CLTI, reducing the risk of major amputation. The biotechnological approaches of transgenesis and the more recent eco-friendly new breeding techniques (NBTs), in particular, genome editing, offer useful strategies for genetic improvement of crops, and therefore, recently, they have been receiving increasingly more attention. The number of traits improved through transgenesis and genome editing technologies is growing, ranging from resistance to herbicides and insects to traits capable of coping with human population growth and climate change, such as nutritional quality or resistance to climatic stress and diseases. Research on both technologies has reached an advanced stage of development and, for many biotech crops, phenotypic evaluations in the open field are already underway. In addition, many approvals regarding main crops have been granted. Over time, there has been an increase in the areas cultivated with crops that have been improved through both approaches, but their use in various countries has been limited by legislative restrictions according to the different regulations applied which affect their cultivation, marketing, and use in human and animal nutrition. In the absence of specific legislation, there is an on-going public debate with favorable and unfavorable positions. This review offers an updated and in-depth discussion on these issues. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have greater health risk factors, including obesity and associated comorbidities. This study investigated the effectiveness of a 12-week exercise and nutrition program on improving physical fitness. Statistical significance (p < 0.05) was found using a paired samples t-test for the 6-Minute Walk and Sit and Reach tests demonstrating improvement in cardiorespiratory fitness and flexibility. Clinical improvements were identified for the Single Leg Stance Test, abdominal curls, and plank noting improvement in static balance, coordination, and core strength and endurance. This Special Issue comprises a collection of eight peer-reviewed articles centered around the plant-pathogen interaction with the aim of proposing strategies that enhance plant resistance to pathogens and limit the damage to crop production, utilizing a multidisciplinary approach. In a forward genetic approach, the availability of mutants in specific genes is essential for demonstrating the role of these genes in plant-pathogen interactions. Conducting gene expression analyses on plants infected by the target pathogen is a powerful tool to identify specific genes among thousands of genes that are associated with a positive response of plants to pathogens. Background: Aging represents a serious health and socioeconomic concern for our society. However, not all people age in the same way and air pollution has been shown to largely impact this process. We explored whether polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), excellent fossil and wood burning tracers, accelerate biological aging detected by lymphocytes DNA methylation age (DNAmAge) and telomere length (TL), early nuclear DNA (nDNA) hallmarks of non-mitotic and mitotic cellular aging, and mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn). Methods: The study population consisted of 49 male noncurrent-smoking coke-oven workers and 44 matched controls. Occupational and environmental sources of PAH exposures were evaluated by structured questionnaire and internal dose (urinary 1-pyrenol). We estimated Occup_PAHs, the product of 1-pyrenol and years of employment as coke-oven workers, and Environ_PAHs, from multiple items (diet, indoor and outdoor). Biological aging was determined by DNAmAge, via pyrosequencing, and by TL and mtDNAcn, via quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Genomic instability markers in lymphocytes as target dose [anti-benzo[a]pyrene diolepoxide (anti-BPDE)–DNA adduct], genetic instability (micronuclei), gene-specific (p53, IL6 and HIC1) and global (Alu and LINE-1 repeats) DNA methylation, and genetic polymorphisms (GSTM1) were also evaluated in the latent variable nDNA_changes. Structural equation modelling (SEM) analysis evaluated these multifaceted relationships. Results: In univariate analysis, biological aging was higher in coke-oven workers than controls as detected by higher percentage of subjects with biological age older than chronological age (AgeAcc ≥ 0, p = 0.007) and TL (p = 0.038), mtDNAcn was instead similar. Genomic instability, i.e., genotoxic and epigenetic alterations (LINE-1, p53 and Alu) and latent variable nDNA_changes were higher in workers (p < 0.001). In SEM analysis, DNAmAge and TL were positively correlated with Occup_PAHs (p < 0.0001). Instead, mtDNAcn is positively correlated with the latent variable nDNA_changes (p < 0.0001) which is in turn triggered by Occup_PAHs and Environ_PAHs. Conclusions: Occupational PAHs exposure influences DNAmAge and TL, suggesting that PAHs target both non-mitotic and mitotic mechanisms and made coke-oven workers biologically older. Also, differences in mtDNAcn, which is modified through nDNA alterations, triggered by environmental and occupational PAH exposure, suggested a nuclear-mitochondrial core-axis of aging. Mast cells (MCs) are tissue cells that are derived from bone marrow stem cells that contribute to allergic reactions, inflammatory diseases, innate and adaptive immunity, autoimmunity, and mental disorders. MCs located near the meninges communicate with microglia through the production of mediators such as histamine and tryptase, but also through the secretion of IL-1, IL-6 and TNF, which can create pathological effects in the brain. Preformed chemical mediators of inflammation and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) are rapidly released from the granules of MCs, the only immune cells capable of storing the cytokine TNF, although it can also be produced later through mRNA. The role of MCs in nervous system diseases has been extensively studied and reported in the scientific literature; it is of great clinical interest. However, many of the published articles concern studies on animals (mainly rats or mice) and not on humans. MCs are known to interact with neuropeptides that mediate endothelial cell activation, resulting in central nervous system (CNS) inflammatory disorders. In the brain, MCs interact with neurons causing neuronal excitation with the production of neuropeptides and the release of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines and chemokines. This article explores the current understanding of MC activation by neuropeptide substance P (SP), corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH), and neurotensin, and the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines, suggesting a therapeutic effect of the anti-inflammatory cytokines IL-37 and IL-38. Inherited disorders of biogenic amine metabolism are genetically determined conditions resulting in dysfunctions or lack of enzymes involved in the synthesis, degradation, or transport of dopamine, serotonin, adrenaline/noradrenaline, and their metabolites or defects of their cofactor or chaperone biosynthesis. They represent a group of treatable diseases presenting with complex patterns of movement disorders (dystonia, oculogyric crises, severe/hypokinetic syndrome, myoclonic jerks, and tremors) associated with a delay in the emergence of postural reactions, global development delay, and autonomic dysregulation. The earlier the disease manifests, the more severe and widespread the impaired motor functions. Diagnosis mainly depends on measuring neurotransmitter metabolites in cerebrospinal fluid that may address the genetic confirmation. Correlations between the severity of phenotypes and genotypes may vary remarkably among the different diseases. Traditional pharmacological strategies are not disease-modifying in most cases. Gene therapy has provided promising results in patients with DYT-DDC and in vitro models of DYT/PARK-SLC6A3. The rarity of these diseases, combined with limited knowledge of their clinical, biochemical, and molecular genetic features, frequently leads to misdiagnosis or significant diagnostic delays. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is a systemic mycosis endemic in Latin America, mostly in Brazil. The involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is uncommon and usually associated with the acute form. Recently, a cluster of acute PCM cases has been described in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We report a 42-year-old male, resident of Rio de Janeiro, presenting chronic diarrhea and abdominal pain in the past 3 years, previously diagnosed as Chron´s disease. When immunosuppressive therapy was prescribed, the patient evolved with worsening of the previous symptoms in addition to odynophagia, 20 kg-weight loss, disseminated skin lesions, diffuse lymphadenopathy and adrenal insufficiency. Histopathological and mycological examination of a skin lesion were compatible with PCM. Itraconazole was prescribed in high doses (400 mg/day). After seven months of treatment, the patient presented with acute abdominal pain which led to an emergent appendectomy, revealing the presence of the fungus. After 24 months, the patient reached clinical cure and recovered from adrenal insufficiency. We emphasize the importance of PCM as a differential diagnosis in patients with chronic diarrhea. The risk of fungal infections should be considered prior to initiating immunosupressive therapies, particularly in endemic areas. Author summary: Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis caused by inhalation of fungi belonging to the genus Paracoccidioides. It is endemic in Latin America, mainly affects rural workers and is still a neglected disease. In most cases, it affects multiple organs at the same time, mainly lungs, skin and mucosa of the upper aerodigestive tract, while involvement of the gastrointestinal tract is rare. We report a case misdiagnosed as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn´s disease). The immunosuppressive therapy led to the worsening of existing symptoms, to the involvement of other organs and then the correct diagnosis of PCM was revealed. The reported case demonstrates the importance of early diagnosis of this mycosis and the risk of starting immunosuppressive therapy in these patients. Furthermore, the place of residence and period in which the patient presented the disease coincides with recent changes in the epidemiology of the disease in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The effects of inbreeding in livestock species breeds have been well documented and they have a negative impact on profitability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of inbreeding in Sarda (SAR, n = 785) and Valle del Belice (VdB, n = 473) dairy sheep breeds and their impact on milk production traits. Two inbreeding coefficients (F) were estimated: using pedigree (FPED), or runs of homozygosity (ROH; FROH) at different minimum ROH lengths and different ROH classes. After the quality control, 38,779 single nucleotide polymorphisms remained for further analyses. A mixed‐linear model was used to evaluate the impact of inbreeding coefficients on production traits within each breed. VdB showed higher inbreeding coefficients compared to SAR, with both breeds showing lower estimates as the minimum ROH length increased. Significant inbreeding depression was found only for milk yield, with a loss of around 7 g/day (for SAR) and 9 g/day (VdB) for a 1% increase of FROH. The present study confirms how the use of genomic information can be used to manage intra‐breed diversity and to calculate the effects of inbreeding on phenotypic traits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The populist radical right-wing Swiss People's Party (SVP / UDC) has been largely known for its xenophobic discourses and its political agenda restricting immigration through popular initiatives such as the vote against minarets (2009), the deportation of "criminal foreigners" (2010) and the initiative against "mass immigration" (2014). This paper shows how SVP/UDC activists, who themselves or whose parents had migrated to Switzerland, understand their political engagement and contribution. This sheds light on their desire to become part of a "deserving minority" and on their use of boundary-making strategies to demarcate their positions from others they label as "undeserving migrants". Their political engagement needs to be understood as part of a broader quest for belonging to the Swiss national community. By showing that migration-related experiences inform the political involvement of activists at the Swiss People's Party, this paper questions widely spread assumptions on contradictory or counterintuitive political commitments. Background Single mutations in COL4A3/COL4A4 genes have been described in patients with autosomal dominant Alport syndrome and thin basement membrane nephropathy, without a shared definition of these patients within the medical community. We aimed to better categorize this clinical entity by examining clinical manifestations, family history, pathological features and genetics. Methods We retrospectively analyzed patients with causative heterozygous COL4A3/COL4A4 mutations referred to us between 1990 and 2019. Index cases were defined as children who were the first to be diagnosed in their families. Results The study included 24 index cases and 29 affected relatives, belonging to 25 families with a heterozygous mutation in the COL4A3/COL4A4 genes. During the follow-up, nine patients developed proteinuria [median age 15.7 years (range 5.6–33)], six at clinical diagnosis and four with progression toward chronic kidney disease (CKD) (three required kidney replacement therapy at 25, 45 and 53 years and one had CKD Stage 2 at 46 years). Extrarenal involvement was observed in 24.5% of patients. Hematuria was transmitted in consecutive generations, while CKD was reported in nonconsecutive generations of 11 families [median age 53 years (range 16–80)]. Seventeen patients (32%) underwent kidney biopsy: findings were consistent with Alport syndrome in 12 cases and with thin basement membrane nephropathy in 5 cases. Conclusions Despite the benign course for these patients described in the literature, a significant percentage is at risk for disease progression. Consequently, we suggest that the assessment of these patients must take into account family history, genetic analysis and pathologic findings. Simple Summary: Despite the use of intensive chemotherapy, the prognosis of high-risk neuroblastoma continues to be dismal. Higher cure rates appear to be mainly correlated with the response to induction therapy. Nevertheless, in recent decades, there has been no significant improvement in the response rate to most induction treatments. The present induction regimen, of only one month duration, which includes iodine-131-metaiodobenzylguanidine (i.e., low-dose rate form of irradiation that persists in the tumor cells for a few weeks) allows for a highly effective continuous exposure of tumor cells to both chemotherapy and radiotherapy, at the time of maximal tumor cell sensitivity to treatment. Following future investigations, along the same line, a higher cure rate in patients with advanced neuroblastoma might be achieved. The prognosis of high-risk neuroblastoma (NB) continues to be poor. The early development of resistance often leads to disease recurrence. In the present study, an innovative induction regimen, including an intensive initial radio-chemotherapy sequence based on the use of iodine-131-metaiodobenzylguanidine (131-I-MIBG), was investigated. The duration of the regimen lasted only one month. Fifteen newly diagnosed patients aged >18 months with high-risk NB were treated with cisplatin, etoposide, cyclophosphamide, and vincristine, followed on day 10 by 131-I-MIBG (dose: 12–18.3 mCi/kg). Cisplatin and vincristine were administered on day 20 and 21 followed by the re-administration of vincristine, cyclophosphamide, and doxorubicin on day 29 and 30. Non-hematologic toxicity was not observed. Moderate hematologic toxicity was present probably attributable to chemotherapy. The evaluation of response was performed approximately 50 days after the initiation of treatment, yielding four complete responses, eight very good partial responses, one partial response, and two non-responses. Importantly, a complete metastatic response was achieved in 87% of patients. The present pilot study, which includes 131-I-MIBG, allows for a highly effective continuous exposure of tumor cells to both chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Introduction: l-amino acid decarboxylase deficiency (AADCD) is an ultrarare autosomal recessive defect of biogenic amine synthesis that presents with early-onset encephalopathy progressing to severe neurological impairment and intellectual disability. We aimed to explore neurocognitive and behavioral profiles associated with AADCD and possible factors predicting outcome in more detail.Methods: Nine AADCD patients (23.2 ± 10.3 years; range 8-40) underwent systematic clinical and neuropsychological assessment. Diagnostic levels of CSF 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid (5-HIAA) and homovanillic acid (HVA), and DDC genotype (as ascertained by American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics grading) were included in the data analysis.Results: All AADCD patients were affected by intellectual disability and psychiatric disorders. Movement disorders included parkinsonism-dystonia, dysarthria, and oculogyric crises. CSF 5-HIAA and HVA levels at diagnosis had a significant influence on adaptive behavior and executive function performance. Patients homozygous for DDC pathogenetic variants showed lower CSF 5-HIAA and HVA levels and higher Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale scores. The disease showed a self-limiting clinical course with partial improvement under pharmacological treatment (B6 and dopamine mimetic drugs).Conclusions: Patients with AADCD suffer from neuropsychological and psychopathological impairment, which may be improved but not reversed under the present therapeutic approach. However, cognitive functioning should be specifically examined in order to avoid its underestimation on the basis of movement disorder severity. Background: Limited joint mobility (LJM), previously known as cheiroarthropathy, refers to the presence of reduced extension at the finger joints in people with diabetes and may be associated with scleroderma-like syndromes such as diabetic sclerodactyly. While scleroderma-like syndromes and LJM have been observed in patients with long-term diabetes and associated complications, the coexistence of diabetes with Juvenile systemic sclerosis (jSSc) is rarely described. Case presentation: We describe the case of a 14-year-old boy with long-lasting type 1 diabetes (T1D) and suspected LJM associated with Raynaud phenomenon, sclerodactyly and tapering of the fingertips. A comprehensive work-up showed positive autoantibodies (ANA, anti-Ro-52, anti-Mi-2b), abnormal nailfold capillaroscopy with a scleroderma pattern, interstitial lung disease and cardiac involvement. The overall clinical picture was consistent with the diagnosis of jSSc. Conclusions: LJM can be the initial sign of underlying systemic sclerosis. Nailfold capillaroscopy may help differentiate jSSc from classical LJM in pediatric patients with T1D and finger contractures or skin induration of no clear origin. This case report provides a starting point for a novel hypothesis regarding the pathogenesis of jSSc. Purosangue Orientale Siciliano, Sanfratellano and Siciliano represent the Sicilian equine genetic resource. This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity, population structure and the pattern of autozygosity of Sicilian horse populations using genome‐wide single‐nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data generated with the Illumina Equine SNP70 array. The genotyping data of 17 European and Middle East populations were also included in the study. The patterns of genetic differentiation, model‐based clustering and Neighbour‐Net showed the expected positioning of Sicilian populations within the wide analysed framework and the close connections between the Purosangue Orientale Siciliano and the Arab as well as between Sanfratellano, Siciliano and Maremmano. The highest expected heterozygosity (He) and contemporary effective population size (cNe) were reported in Siciliano (He = 0.323, cNe = 397), and the lowest were reported in Purosangue Orientale Siciliano (He = 0.277, cNe = 10). The analysis of the runs of homozygosity and the relative derived inbreeding revealed high internal homogeneity in Purosangue Orientale Siciliano and Arab horses, intermediate values in Maremmano and Sanfratellano and high heterogeneity in the Siciliano population. The genome‐wide SNP analysis showed the selective pressure on Purosangue Orientale Siciliano towards traits related to endurance performance. Our results underline the importance of planning adequate conservation and exploitation programmes to reduce the level of inbreeding and, therefore, the loss of genetic diversity. Objective: In this paper, we present a novel, low-profile, scleral-coil based, distance ranging system which is suitable for smart, accommodating contact lenses. Methods: We measure the induced emf between a set of four thin semi-circular coils patterned on flexible Kapton substrates that conform to the eyes’ sclera. This induced emf is a function of eye gaze angles. The system then determines the distance from the eyes to the desired object via the triangulation of these eye gaze angles Results: Experiments on eyeball simulated tissue gels indicate an accurate prediction of object distance in the 0.1-15 D range with a 0.15 D RMS error and object direction in the −15 to 15-degree arc with 0.4-degree RMS error, respectively. The energy required was determined to be as low as 20 μJ per range reading. Conclusion: Experimental data shows that our proposed new method of eye-tracking and distance ranging system can accurately predict eye-gaze angles and object-distance, whilst using only 20 μJ per range reading. Significance: The high-accuracy, low-profile and reduced energy requirements of the proposed eye-tracking technique, make it suitable for applications in the vast field of adaptive optics such as smart contact lenses and other low-power vision corrective applications. Paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) is one of the main endemic systemic mycoses in Latin America, usually occurring in rural areas. When PCM occurs simultaneously with underlying immunosuppressive conditions, it can present as an opportunistic disease. Between 2000 and 2017, literature reported around 200 PCM cases in people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). To address research gaps on this co-infection and to study its possible temporal changes in the last decade, we performed an active co-infection case search on the HIV/AIDS and PCM cohorts from a Brazilian reference center database from 1989 to 2019. We found 20 PLWHA among 684 PCM patients (2.92%), predominantly male (70.0%) and urban workers (80.0%). The median age of patients was higher in the 2010–2019 decade (p = 0.006). The occurrence of PCM in PLWHA was lower when compared with other fungal diseases. Although 50.0% of the patients had already been diagnosed with HIV infection and presented CD4+ T cell counts greater than 200/mm3 at the time of PCM diagnosis, the suspicion of immunosuppression in the context of atypical and more severe clinical forms of PCM revealed the diagnosis of HIV infection in 35.0% of the patients. Two (10.0%) patients had an evolution compatible with immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) after starting antiretroviral therapy (ART).We highlight the importance of considering a PCM diagnosis in PLWHA to prevent a late-onset treatment and progression to severe manifestations and unfavorable outcomes. In addition, HIV investigation is recommended in PCM patients, especially those with atypical and more severe clinical presentations. In these cases, late diagnosis and treatment can lead to higher risk of complications, sequelae, and deaths. PCM occurrence in PLWHA is scarcely reported in the literature. This study aims to describe the clinical profile of patients diagnosed with PCM and HIV co-infection from a 30-year historical cohort followed at a Brazilian reference center for infectious diseases. Our results revealed that the suspicion of this co-infection in patients with more severe clinical forms of PCM as well as routine HIV testing in PCM patients could help to prevent late-onset treatment and progression to unfavorable outcomes. Sporotrichosis is a subacute/chronic subcutaneous mycosis. Since the late 1990s, there has been a hyperendemic zoonotic transmission in the state of Rio de Janeiro, involving Sporothrix brasiliensis, the most virulent causative species, and a "belt" was described along the limits between the capital and its outskirts ("Baixada Fluminense"). This study analyzes the distribution of sporotrichosis using secondary data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (Sinan) of the Rio de Janeiro State Health Department (SES/RJ) from 2011 to 2015 and from the INI Electronic Patient Record System (Sipec) from 2008 to 2015. Cases diagnosed since the onset of the hyperendemic exceed all previously reported case series of the disease and there is a progressive expansion in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The study suggests the spread of the mycosis to all regions of the state and the expansion of the previously described "belt", despite public health measures and changes in its profile over the years, with great social impact. The objective of this paper is to highlight the social and cultural drivers of antimicrobial use and resistance and targeted interventions for secondary and tertiary care settings in Canada and other OECD countries. This paper is an extension of the synthesis conducted for the Public Health Agency of Canada's 2019 Spotlight Report: Preserving Antibiotics Now and Into the Future. We conducted a systematic review with a few modifications to meet rapid timelines. We conducted a search in Ovid MEDLINE and McMaster University's evidence databases for systematic reviews and then for individual Canadian studies. To cast a wider net, we searched OECD organization websites and screened reference lists from systematic reviews. We synthesized the evidence narratively and categorized the evidence into macro-, meso-, and microlevel. A total of 70 studies were (a) from OCED countries and summarized evidence of potential sociocultural antimicrobial resistance and use barriers or facilitators and/or interventions addressing these challenges; (b) systematic reviews with 50% of included studies that are situated in secondary and tertiary settings; and (c) published in Canada's two official languages, English and French. We found that hospital structures and policies may influence antibiotic utilization and variations in antimicrobial management. Microlevel factors may sway inappropriate prescribing among clinicians. The amount and type of antibiotics used may affect resistance rates. Interventions were mainly comprised of antibiotic stewardship and training that modify clinician behavior and that educate patients and carers. This evidence synthesis illustrates the various drivers of, and interventions for, antimicrobial use and resistance at the macro-, meso-, and microlevel in secondary and tertiary settings. After immediate tooth extraction or after alveolar socket healing, tooth transplants are increasingly used for functional restoration of edentulous maxillary areas. Recent studies have shown the periodontal ligament (PDL) viability and the tooth housing time in the adapted neo-alveolus as key factors for transplantation success. During surgical time, 3D stereolithographic replicas are used for fitting test procedures. In this paper, the accuracy of 3D dental replicas, compared with the corresponding natural teeth, is assessed in surgical transplantation. Lamb skulls were selected and submitted to Cone Beam Computer Tomography (CBCT). Scanning information, converted into Standard Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) and Standard Triangulation Language (STL), was sent to the Volux X-ray Centre for 3D replica printing. After the tooth extractions, all lambs' incisors were measured with a digital caliber and compared with the 3D replicas. Volume and dimensional error values were evaluated. All replicas showed macroscopically smaller volume (45.54%). Root replicas showed higher variations compared with the crown areas, with several unreplicated apical root areas. The cement–enamel junction tooth area was replicated quite faithfully, and the base area relative error showed 9.8% mean value. Even further studies with a larger number of replicas are needed. Data obtained confirmed high volumes of macroscopic discrepancies with several unreproduced apical root sites. The achieved accuracy (90.2%) confirmed that the 3D replicas cannot be used to reduce the surgical time during transplantation predictable procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity in vivo and in vitro of cis-(±)-acetate of 4-chloro-6-(naphtalene-1-yl)-tetrahydro-2H-pyran-2-yl) methyl 2-(2-(2,6-diclorofenylamine) phenyl (LS19). Male Swiss mice were analyzed in the paw edema, ear edema, and air pouch tests, and in vitro COX inhibition, cytotoxicity evaluation, and cytokine and nitric oxide determination tests. The compound showed effect on the carrageenan- and bradykinin-induced paw edema and capsaicin-induced ear edema tests. In addition, the compound was able to inhibit leukocyte migration to decrease the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and interleukin 1β (IL-1β) and to increase the levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10. The compound was also able to reduce levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and nitric oxide in the RAW 264.7 cell line and to inhibit COX activity. LS19 did not induce any significant changes in the viability of RAW 264.7 cells, demonstrating safety for these cell lines. The compound LS19 did not reduce the production of gastric mucus and induced a smaller increase in the extent of gastric lesions than that developed by the administration of diclofenac. Topoisomerases are nuclear enzymes involved into the processes of DNA replication and transcription. Irinotecan a semi-synthetic analogue of Camptothecin, is a pro-drug converted at the liver and at the intestinal level by the enzyme carboxylesterase into the active metabolite SN-38, with an enhanced antitumor activity. The SN-38, like other topoisomerase I inhibitors, causes an irreversible double-strand rupture that leads to cell death. The main pharmacodynamics characteristics of Irinotecan are described, focusing on its adverse effects and clinical use. Actually, Irinotecan is widely used, alone or in combination with other chemotherapeutics, for the treatment of different tumors, including mainly carcinomas (colon, stomach, lung, ovary and uterus), lymphomas, and pediatric tumors such as neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, PNET and brain tumors. Irinotecan metabolism is a complex process, involving numerous effective proteins both in the activation to SN-38 and in the reactions leading to biliary or renal elimination of the drug and its metabolites. The main toxicity is gastrointestinal, mainly nausea and vomiting and delayed diarrhea, and more rarely mucositis and neutropenia. The adverse effects occur with a significant interindividual variability for both onset and severity. Promising possibilities to customize and optimize therapy with Irinotecan to reducing adverse reactions while increasing clinical efficacy, based on the predictive role of gene markers have been recently reported. Aims: The aim of this study is to extend understandings of the impact of surgically diagnosed endometriosis on women's social lives, work and education. Methods: Participants (N = 200; average age: 27.1 years (±6.72)) were recruited from a range of sources, including social media and private women's health clinics. They completed an online survey comprising seven open‐ended questions about how experience with endometriosis impacted (i) overall life; (ii) family relationships; (iii) friendships; (iv) attendance at social events; (v) engagement in leisure activities; (vi) work; and (vii) education. Data were analysed using inductive classical content analysis. Results: The data set contained 1400 discrete codable statements, with 19% of women reporting some form of social impact. A key result was the role of family and friends, both positive and negative, as well as the positive role that the workplace/educational institution can play (noted by 50% of participants). Findings highlight the negative impact on leisure activities, reported by 86% of women. The exhaustion of sick and unpaid leave was reported by 41% of women. Conclusion: This study highlights the impact of endometriosis on the social and economic lives of Australian women and underscores the importance of the comprehensive response recommended in the National Action Plan for Endometriosis. Pain is responsible for inducing physical and mental stress, interfering negatively in patients' quality of life. Classic analgesic drugs, such as opioids and non‐steroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs, are known for their wide range of adverse effects, making it important to develop new drugs. Thus, this study aimed to analyse the action of the hybrid compound cis‐ (±) ‐acetate of 4‐chloro‐6‐ (naphthalene‐1‐yl) ‐tetrahydro‐2h‐pyran −2‐yl) methyl2‐ (2‐ [2,6‐dichlorophenylamine] phenyl (LS19) under acute nociceptive conditions, and deepened the understanding of the responsible mechanisms. Male Swiss mice were evaluated in the acetic acid‐induced abdominal writhing, formalin, tail flick, capsaicin‐ and glutamate‐induced nociception, thermal stimulation in animals injected with capsaicin and rotarod tests besides the acute and subchronic toxicological evaluation. The compound showed effect on the acetic acid‐induced abdominal writhing, formalin (both phases), tail flick, thermal stimulation in animals injected with capsaicin and capsaicin‐induced nociception tests. In the study of the mechanism of action was observed reversion of the antihyperalgesic effect of the compound from the previous intraperitoneal and intrathecal administration of naloxone, nor‐binaltorphimine, naltrindole, methylnaltrexone, 7‐nitroindazole, L‐NAME, ODQ, glibenclamide on the tail flick test. In the thermal stimulation in animals injected with capsaicin, the compound showed antinociceptive effect by oral and intraplantar routes, besides to reducing the levels of TNF‐α, IL‐1β and PGE2 in the paws previously administered with capsaicin. There were no signs of acute and subchronic intoxication with the compound. In summary, the compound LS19 presented spinal and local antihyperalgesic effect, demonstrating participation of the opioid/NO/cGMP/K+ ATP pathway and TRPV1 receptors and it demonstrated safety in its use in mice. Specialized plant metabolites (SPMs), traditionally referred to as 'secondary metabolites', are chemical compounds involved in a broad range of biological functions, including plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. Moreover, some of them have a role in end-product quality with potential health benefits in humans. For this reason, they became an important target of studies focusing on their mechanisms of action and use in crop breeding and management. In this review we summarize the specific role of SPMs in physiological processes and in plant resistance to abiotic and biotic stresses, and the different strategies to enhance their production/accumulation in plant tissues under stress, including genetic approaches (marker-assisted selection and biotechnological tools) and agronomic management (fertilizer applications, cultivation method and beneficial microorganisms). New crop management strategies based on the direct application of the most promising compounds in form of plant residuals or liquid formulations are also described. This review provides an updated analysis of the main aspects involving the diagnosis and the management of children with acute ischemic stroke. Acute ischemic stroke is an emergency of rare occurrence in children (rate of incidence of 1/3500 live birth in newborns and 1–2/100,000 per year during childhood with peaks of incidence during the perinatal period, under the age of 5 and in adolescence). The management of ischemic stroke in the paediatric age is often challenging because of pleomorphic age-dependent risk factors and aetiologies, high frequency of subtle or atypical clinical presentation, and lacking evidence-based data about acute recanalization therapies. Each pediatric tertiary centre should activate adequate institutional protocols for the optimization of diagnostic work-up and treatments. Conclusion: The implementation of institutional standard operating procedures, summarizing the steps for the selection of candidate for neuroimaging among the ones presenting with acute neurological symptoms, may contribute to shorten the times for thrombolysis and/or endovascular treatments and to improve the long-term outcome. Inborn errors of metabolism causing stroke (ischemic or haemorrhagic) or stroke-like episodes (e.g., that are also called "metabolic strokes" and include acute brain lesions not related with alterations of blood flow) cover a wide range of diseases in which acute metabolic decompensations after trigger events (e.g., fever, dehydration, sepsis etc.) may have a variable frequency. The early diagnosis of these conditions is essential because, despite their rarity, effective symptomatic treatments may be available for acute settings (e.g., arginine for Mitochondrial myopathy, Encephalopathy, Lactic Acidosis, and Stroke-like episodes- MELAS) while in other cases disease modifying therapies may be useful to prevent stroke occurrence, recurrence, or relapse (e.g., Fabry disease). The detection of a non-vascular distribution of lesions and the diffuse use of 1HMRS are often diriment in the differential of ischemic and metabolic strokes. This review summarized the main clinical features and the pathophysiological mechanisms of stroke and stroke-like episodes in inborn errors of metabolism presenting with stroke as part of natural history of the disease. These conditions belong to different etiological groups, such as organic acidurias, mitochondrial encephalopathies, homocystinuria and remethylation disorders, urea cycle disorders, lysosomal diseases (e.g. Fabry disease, glycogen storage disease), congenital disorders of glycosylation, neurotransmitter disorders, adenosine deaminase 2 deficiency and few other neurometabolic disorders. We recruited 100 participants (53 males, 47 females) with a mean follow-up lasting 10.46 ± 8.37 years. Age at epilepsy-onset was predictive of poor adaptive and cognitive functions (VABS-II score, r = 0.350, p = 0.001; BRIEF control subscale, r = -0.253; p = 0.031). Duration of epilepsy correlated negatively with IQ (r = -0.234, p = 0.019) and VABS-II score (r = -0.367, p = 0.001). Correlations were found between delayed/lacking EEG maturation/organization and IQ (r = 0.587, p = 0.001), VABS-II score (r = 0.658, p = 0.001), BRIEF-MI and BRIEF-GEC scores (r = -0.375, p = 0.001; r = -0.236, p = 0.033), ASEBA anxiety (r = -0.220, p = 0.047) and ADHD (r = -0.233, p = 0.035) scores. The number of antiseizure medications (ASMs) correlated with IQ (r = -0.414, p = 0.001), VABS-II (r = -0.496, p = 0.001), and BRIEF-MI (r = 0.294, p = 0.012) scores; while age at the beginning of therapy with ASEBA anxiety score (r = 0.272, p = 0.013). The occurrence of status epilepticus was associated with worse adaptive performances. The linear regression analysis model showed that delayed/lacking EEG maturation/organization had a significant influence on the IQ (R2 = 0.252, p < 0.001) and the BRIEF-GEC variability (R2 = 0.042, p = 0.036). The delayed/lacking EEG maturation/organization and the duration of epilepsy also had a significant influence on the VABS-II score (R2 = 0.455, p = 0.005). Age at seizure-onset, EEG maturation/organization, duration of epilepsy, occurrence of status epilepticus, age at the introduction and number of ASMs used are reliable predictors of long-term outcomes in patients with genetic DEE. Managers need to trace social impacts and vulnerability caused by environmental change all the way to its driving forces to target key system components for intervention. However, most available scientific evidence deals with either the ecological impacts of direct drivers or the value of ecosystem benefits to people. Our matrix-based tool combines these types of evidence to make environmental management problems traceable through a structured yet flexible procedure. The tool consists of a series of matrices that sequentially link direct drivers of environmental change, landscapes, ecological conditions, benefits to people, and stakeholder types. Qualitative matrices result from the integration and synthesis of available evidence from literature reviews, and where data is scarce, these are used to elicit quantitative scores from expert opinion. Expert scoring of links and multiplication of matrices allow for estimating the impacts of each driver of environmental change on each stakeholder type and using this information as input to assess stakeholders' vulnerability through impact-influence diagrams. Applying the tool to the Argentine Gran Chaco, a globally threatened ecoregion, yielded a transparent and reliable picture of this data-scarce place, with important management implications. Tracing stakeholder impacts back to direct drivers confirmed that further encroachment of cleared areas around indigenous lands will increase the vulnerability of this social group. Also, assessing confidence levels for every social-ecological link suggested that incentivizing peasant farmers to restore natural forage supply represents a management opportunity to reverse degradation. Background: Histological findings of kidney involvement have been rarely reported in pediatric patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we describe clinical, laboratory, and histological findings of two pediatric cases with almost exclusive kidney involvement by SARS-CoV-2. Results: A 10-year-old girl with IgA vasculitis nephritis underwent kidney biopsy, showing diffuse and segmental mesangial-proliferative glomerulonephritis, and steroid therapy was initiated. After the worsening of the clinical picture, including an atypical skin rash, she was diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2. The re-evaluation of initial biopsy showed cytoplasmatic blebs and virus-like particles in tubular cells at electron microscopy. Despite SARS-CoV-2 clearance and the intensification of immunosuppression, no improvement was observed. A second kidney biopsy showed a crescentic glomerulonephritis with sclerosis, while virus-like particles were no longer evident. The second patient was a 12-year-old girl with a 3-week history of weakness and weight loss. Rhinitis was reported the month before. No medications were being taken. Blood and urine analysis revealed elevated serum creatinine, hypouricemia, low molecular weight proteinuria, and glycosuria. A high SARS-CoV-2-IgG titre was detected. Kidney biopsy showed acute tubular-interstitial nephritis. Steroid therapy was started with a complete resolution of kidney involvement. Conclusion: We can speculate that in both cases SARS-CoV-2 played a major role as inflammatory trigger of the kidney damage. Therefore, we suggest investigating the potential kidney damage by SARS-CoV-2 in children. Current encapsulation methods entail the use of petroleum‐based materials, initiators, and crosslinkers as well as mixing, heating, and purification steps. Hence, more efficient and eco‐friendly approaches to encapsulation must be sought. Herein, we propose a simple method by making use of a pre‐formed amphiphilic polymer and employing the Hansen Solubility Parameters approach to determine which fragrances could be encapsulated by spontaneous coacervation in water. The coacervates do not precipitate as solids but they remain suspended as colloidally stable liquid microcapsules, as demonstrated by fluorescence correlation spectroscopy. The effective encapsulation of fragrance is proven through confocal Raman spectroscopy, while the structure of the capsules is investigated by means of cryo FIB/SEM, confocal laser scanning microscopy, and small‐angle X‐ray scattering. The objective of the present study was to characterize the essential oil of Myrciaria tenella (MTEO) leaves, to determine the effects of distillation time (1 to 5 h), and to evaluate its action on acute pain and inflammation both in vivo and in vitro. MTEO was obtained by hydrodistillation for 4 h and 36 compounds were detected, mainly consisting of hydrocarbon terpenes such as β-pinene (21.46%), α-pinene (19.43%), E-caryophyllene (10.89%) and aromadendrene (9.17%). A high yield of α-pinene/β-pinene-rich MTEO was obtained after only 2 h of extraction. For in vivo biological assays, MTEO was administered to male Swiss mice, showing an action against hypernociception (acetic acid-induced abdominal writhing, formalin and Von Frey models) and inhibiting carrageenan-induced paw edema. Production of IL-6, TNF-α, IL-1β, PGE2 was reduced and production of IL-10 was increased, with no change in motor performance. Neurological emergencies account for about one-third of the highest severity codes attributed in emergency pediatric departments. About 75% of children with acute neurological symptoms presents with seizures, headache, or other paroxysmal events. Life-threatening conditions involve a minor proportion of patients (e.g., less than 15% of children with headache and less than 5% of children with febrile seizures). This review highlights updated insights about clinical features, diagnostic workup, and therapeutic management of pediatric neurological emergencies. Particularly, details will be provided about the most recent insights about headache, febrile seizures, status epilepticus, altered levels of consciousness, acute motor impairment, acute movement disorders, and functional disorders, as well as the role of diagnostic tools (e.g., neuroimaging, lumbar puncture, and electroencephalography), in the emergency setting. Durum wheat (tetraploid) and bread wheat (hexaploid) are two closely related species with potentially different adaptation capacities and only a few distinct technological properties that make durum semolina and wheat flour more suitable for pasta, or bread and bakery products, respectively. Interspecific crosses and new breeding technologies now allow researchers to develop wheat lines with durum or bread quality features in either a tetraploid or hexaploid genetic background; such lines combine any technological properties of wheat with the different adaptation capacity expressed by tetraploid and hexaploid wheat genomes. Here, we discuss what makes bread and durum wheat different, consider their environmental adaptation capacity and the major quality-related genes that explain the different end-uses of semolina and bread flour and that could be targets for future wheat breeding programs. Durum (tetraploid, BBAA) and bread (hexaploid, BBAADD) wheat are two related species with different technological properties of the grains and end-use products (pasta and bakery products, respectively). The hexaploid genome confers a wider adaptation capacity, a feature that may explain the much larger distribution of bread wheat. The close relationship makes possible to overcome the interspecific barrier and transfer genes between durum and bread wheat in both directions. Only a few traits, regulated by major genes, are responsible for the technological properties of bread and durum wheat grains and they can be shuttled between the two species. Background. A common cause of shoulder pain is attributable to the impingement syndrome. The objectives of this systematic review are: 1) to investigate the usefulness of clinical tests and their psychometric qualities in the clinical diagnosis of subacromial shoulder impingement; 2) to investigate the accuracy of different imaging methods to identify structural correlates related to rotator cuff injuries as indirect confirmation of subacromial impingement syndrome. Materials and methods. This systematic review was carried out following the indications contained in the PRISMA checklist. The methodological quality of the studies included was assessed through the AMSTAR 2. Results. Several studies agree that no test improves the post-test probability of detecting subacromial impingement and, therefore, are inaccurate. Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Magnetic Resonance Arthrography have the same level of sensitivity and specificity in the detection of complete lesions of the rotator cuff. For partial injuries it seems that there is a lower sensitivity in view of high specificity, especially with ultrasound. Discussion and conclusions. The present review confirms the poor diagnostic ability of clinical tests for subacromial shoulder impingement and it highlights the criticism in imaging employment in the complex process of the clinical framing of this syndrome. Student engagement opportunities allow undergraduate students to pursue their interests, grow into engaged citizens, and connect their disciplinary knowledge in an applied context. Academic libraries are still investigating the ways they can support, enhance, and provide these opportunities. This exploratory, qualitative research project used semi-structured, in-depth interviews to learn more about undergraduate student engagement experiences and the student's perception of the role of the library in these opportunities. The authors explore and amplify how students see the library and provide suggestions on how libraries can continue to contextualize their work in student engagement opportunities.
