The application of U-Pb dating method performed on calcite has exponentially increased over the last years, since constraining the age of the crystallization for such syn-kinematic minerals, would provide a specific timing of faults movement. The potential gain of this approach is evident but the robustness of the U-Pb method performed on calcites has been not yet systematically tested. Here, we firstly demonstrated that a mineral/fluid interaction indeed affects the regression of the 238U/206Pb and 207Pb/206Pb data-points and therefore the age; and secondly, we propose an innovative application of U-Pb dating method and a new strategy to identify and reject analytically robust isochrons.We explore 36 samples, combining U-Pb dating performed with different methods along with carbon and oxygen stable isotopes compositions measured on the same fibres of calcite. The extremely high precision 207Pb/206Pb measured by Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry revealed that every sample experienced a certain degree of fluid interaction. We find no correlation between 238U/206Pb and the spread in δ18O. The higher spread in δ18O is instead coupled with a remarkable scattered data-points that yield U-Pb ages calculated with the different methods on the same samples with a large variability. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that great care must be taken when considering radiometric ages made on calcite since LA-ICP-MS large uncertainties might obscure the isotopic reorganization.

The intermontane Tarom Basin of NW Iran (Arabia-Eurasia collision zone) is located at the transition between the Iranian Plateau (IP) to the SW and the Alborz Mountains to the NE. This basin was filled by upper Cenozoic synorogenic red beds that retain first-order information on the erosional history of adjacent topography, the vertical growth of the plateau margin and its orogen perpendicular expansion. Here, we perform a multidisciplinary study including magnetostratigraphy, sedimentology, geochronology and sandstone petrography on these red beds. Our data show that Eocene arc volcanism in the region terminated at 38-36Ma, while intrabasinal synorogenic sedimentation (endorheic conditions) occurred from at least 16.2 to&nbsp

We present the geological map of the north-eastern margin of the Fucino Basin, which is mainly characterized by Plio-Quaternary continental deposits that show transition from deeper-water lacustrine environment, marginal lacustrine system, and fluvial facies. These deposits unconformably overlie upper Messinian Lago-Mare sediments and pre-orogenic carbonate succession. The occurrence of Caspiocypris tiberina in the Plio-Quaternary lacustrine sediments, coupled with the normal magnetic polarity of Casa Colombaia section, led to suggest the onset of the sedimentation of these continental deposits to the late Piacenzian (2.58–3.04 Ma). The upper Messinian deposits are characterized by ostracod assemblages related to the Loxocorniculina djafarovi zone, pointing to the last Lago-Mare event of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (5.40–5.33 Ma). This new stratigraphic framework may be useful to refine the long-term slip rates of the still active normal faults that affect the north-eastern margin of the Fucino Basin.

The structural analysis of large intracontinental wrench faults is fundamental for deciphering the long-term evolution of continental crust in complex areas in terms of their geodynamic evolution and large-scale crustal block displacements. In this contribution, we demonstrate a pre-Miocene dextral activity of the present-day left-lateral Great Kavir - Doruneh Fault System (GKDFS, Central Iran), one of the major intracontinental active strike-slip faults extending from the Afghan border to the Nain region between Central Iran and the Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone. We document important dextral shearing recorded along a segment of the GKDFS, the Arusan Fault System (AFS), located east of Jandaq, close to the present-day active trace of the GKDFS. The AFS include several ENE-WSW striking strands exposed for a length of more than 50km, which couple pre-Cretaceous ophiolites and metamorphic basement units with the Cretaceous succession of the Khur basin. The fault shows transpressional structures consistent with a dextral shear including thrusts and en échelon folds affecting the Cretaceous carbonate units. Paleostress reconstruction based on mesoscopic fault analysis and related folds geometry allowed to establish vorticity parameters indicating that deformation occurred close to a total simple shear regime with a calculated Wk between 0.9 and 1. The enormous Meso-Cenozoic dextral displacements occurred along the AFS and along the entire GKDFS are attested by the up to several hundreds of kilometers offset of the Paleotethys suture zone, from NE Iran to the western border of Central Iran.

Orogenic plateaus are extensive, elevated, arid, generally internally drained, morphotectonic provinces of low internal topographic relief that represent a striking and enigmatic feature of Earth’s continental landscapes. They are located along convergent plate boundaries and have a profound impact on regional and global climate, erosional processes, local- to far-field deformation mechanisms and the long-term distribution of biomes and biodiversity. Although the paramount role of large orogenic plateaus in shaping our planet is widely appreciated, the question of why, where, and how some orogenic systems develop large plateaus remains a first-order problem in our understanding of lithospheric evolution and orogenic processes.Here, we present a clumped isotope paleoaltimetry study to document the elevation history of the Iranian Plateau, with the goal of understanding the rates and mechanisms of orogenic plateau rise. This plateau is in the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone, has a mean elevation of ~ 1.8 km, steep margins with mountain peaks higher than 4 km, and experienced surface uplift sometime after the middle Miocene as documented by the occurrence of ca. 17-My-old marine deposits in the plateau interior.Preliminary results from Early Miocene to Quaternary pedogenic carbonates on the plateau interior and the adjacent, less elevated, intermontane Tarom basin suggest that surface uplift must have occurred sometime between 12-11 and 8 Ma. The lack of significant crustal shortening and thickening during this time interval and the occurrence of a renewed phase of adakitic volcanism by ca. 11 Ma suggests that surface uplift may have been driven by deep-seated processes associated with asthenospheric flow.

The Boiano Basin is one of the largest Quaternary intermontane basins of the central-southern Apennines within one of the most tectonically active areas of the Mediterranean region. In order to reconstruct its entire Quaternary stratigraphic, tec- tonic, and palaeoenvironment evolution, lithofacies and palaeomagnetic analyses have been performed on a 900 m-deep borehole (CP1) drilled in the southwestern sector of the basin. The Quaternary succession consists of an alternating of alluvial fan and fluvial-marshy deposits for a total thickness of 240 m, unconformably laying on Lower Miocene deposits of the Sannio Unit, thrusted on upper Miocene deposits of the Molise Flysch. In addition, the stratigraphic study and facies distribution of 29 intermediate and shallow wells drilled in the basin, allowing us to define the thick- ness and lithofacies variations of the Quaternary sedimentary units inside the entire Boiano Basin in the sector of Campochiaro alluvial fan. Our results demonstrate that the Boiano Basin infilling started during the late Early Pleistocene (c. 1.1 Ma) and developed with variation in lithofacies distribution and thickness. The first deposi- tional unit (Early Pleistocene-early Middle Pleistocene in age) was palustrine and fluvial-marshy, the second (Middle Pleistocene in age) was characterized by the occurrence of the first cycle of alluvial fan deposition, the third (late Middle Pleisto- cene in age) was newly palustrine and fluvial marshy and, finally, the fourth recorded two cycles of alluvial fan deposition (late Middle Pleistocene and Late Pleistocene in age, respectively), interspersed by short periods of palustrinity, tephra layers deposi- tion, and palaeosols development. The study allows the hypothesizing that the Qua- ternary infilling was accommodated within a graben (or semigraben) structure, affected mainly by extensional fault systems localized in the inner part of the basin and secondly by fault systems bounding the basin.

In this study, an extensive paleomagnetic sampling (70 sites) was carried out in north-eastern Iran with the aim of reconstructing the rotation history of the outer margin of the Eurasia-Arabia collision area represented by the Ala-Dagh, Binalud and Kopeh-Dagh mountain belts. We sampled the red beds units from the Lower Cretaceous Shurijeh Fm. and from the Middle-Upper Miocene Upper Red Fm (URF). Paleomagnetic results from all the sampled areas show a homogeneous amount of CW rotations measured in the above-mentioned Formations. These paleomagnetic results suggest that the oroclinal bending process that caused the curvature of Alborz mountain belt in north Iran after the Middle-Late Miocene, also extended to the Ala-Dagh, Binalud and Kopeh-Dagh mountain belts, at the north-eastern border of the Arabia-Eurasia deforming zone. Based on our paleomagnetic results and on GPS, seismological, geomorphological and structural data available in the area, a hypothesis of tectonic evolution of the northern Iran-South Caspian Basin area, from Middle-Late Miocene to Present, is here proposed. In this model, the initiation of the oroclinal bending processes in northern Iran occurred about 6–4 myr ago, related to the impinging of North Iran between the South Caspian block and the southern margin of the Turan platform, driven by the northward subduction of the South Caspian basement under the Aspheron-Balkhan Sill. As paleomagnetic results from this study show a pattern of vertical axis rotations that is inconsistent with the present-day kinematics of the northern Iranian blocks as described by seismicity and GPS data, we suggest that the tectonic processes responsible for the bending of northern Iran mountain chains are no longer active and that the westward motion of the South Caspian basin, and therefore the initiation of opposite strike-slip motion along the Ashk-Abad and Shahrud faults, occurred very recently (∼2 My ago). We therefore propose that initiation of the northward subduction of the South Caspian basin below the Apsheron-Balkhan Sill and the westward extrusion of the South Caspian block did not occur at the same time, with the former occurring between the late Miocene and the Pliocene, and the latter during the Pleistocene.

The Alternanza Scuola-Lavoro (ASL) is considered by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), an innovative teaching method which helps in consolidating the knowledge acquired at school and testing students’ attitudes though practical experience. As part of the ASL projects proposed at the University of Roma Tre, SISMO-LAB project is aimed to the creation of an educational kit on earthquakes.The main objectives of the project are: promotion of knowledge on earthquakes, improvement of analysis and design skills, and acquisition of methodological skills in the field of dissemination of scientific culture. Thirty-five students from 6 different schools were involved in the pilot project. The experience was assessed positively both by the students, who showed interest and involvement in the realization of the whole kit, and by their teachers who noticed an active and critical participation of their students in the various phases of project implementation. In particular, the workshop experience has attracted students for practical activities and for the fact that, that, once completed, the educational kit became property of the school. This positive feedback has encouraged university staff to continue the project in the future.

We report on results from anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) analyses carried out on weakly deformed fine-grained sediments from the Northern Apennine orogenic system (Italy). We sampled 63 sites from preorogenic, synorogenic, and postorogenic sequences, which differ in age, composition, depositional environment, degrees of deformation, and tectonic regimes. The magnetic fabric is typical of weakly deformed sediments, with a magnetic foliation subparallel to the bedding plane and a magnetic lineation well defined in this plane. Northern Apennine chain deposits are characterized by strongly oblate magnetic susceptibility ellipsoids, indicating that the magnetic fabric is the result of both compaction process and tectonic load experienced by the sediments during diagenesis and orogenic events. The orientation of magnetic lineation is significantly different depending whether the studied sites underwent extensional or compressional tectonic regimes. In the Northern Apennine chain, the magnetic lineation is mostly oriented NNW-SSE, parallel to the main compressional structures. It suggests a tectonic origin of the magnetic lineation with an acquisition related to the Apennines compressional phases. In the extensional Tuscan Tyrrhenian margin, magnetic lineation is oriented ENE-WSW, almost perpendicular to the main extensional faults, which represent the main deformation elements of the area. Our results demonstrate a close relationship between the shape and orientation of magnetic fabric and the tectonic history of rocks, confirming that AMS represents a valuable tool to investigate the tectonic history of weakly deformed sedimentary rocks.

In Central Iran, most of the Late Cenozoic to Present shortening has been accomplished in the Zagros, in the Alborz, and Kopeh-Dagh mountain ranges. Between these active mountain belts, a minor amount of shortening is observed and the deformation style is characterized by active strike-slip faults that bound relatively aseismic blocks. Two main strike-slip fault systems are presently active in different regions of Central Iran: South of latitude 34 °N, active deformation is accommodated on ∼N–S oriented right-lateral strike-slip faults, and north of latitude 34 °N, E–W left-lateral strike slip faults prevail. In this work, we investigated two different structures, representative of the two different strike-slip systems occurring in Central Iran: the Yazd fold system located in an area dominated by the occurrence of NNW-SSE oriented right-lateral strike slip faults, and the Ferdows fold system that developed at the western termination of the E–W left-lateral strike-slip Dasht-e-Bayaz fault. Paleomagnetic results show opposite vertical-axis rotations related to the different orientation and sense of movement of strike-slip fault systems, suggesting that in Central Iran the N–S oriented right-lateral and E–W oriented left-lateral strike-slip faults play significant roles in accommodating the Arabia-Eurasia convergence, by rotating counterclockwise and clockwise in the horizontal plane, respectively.

In the Dolomites (Eastern Southern Alps, Italy), a diffuse Middle Triassic igneous activity is now present mostly as lava flow and pyroclastic successions, with rare shallow-depth intrusive bodies cropping out at Predazzo, Monzoni and Cima Pape areas. In this work, the emplacement modes of the Predazzo and Monzoni bodies were investigated by means of petrographic and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data coupled with a field geological study. The presence of intrusive rocks in between these two bodies and the continuity of the metamorphic aureola from west of the Predazzo to east of the Monzoni body suggest that they are parts of a ∼20 km wide SW-NE oriented continuous pluton, sub-parallel to Ladinian strike-slip faults. AMS and petrographic data from the Predazzo body are consistent with a multistage ring-dyke emplacement mode, with areas of upward flow of the magma located in the NW and ESE part of the intrusion, whereas in the southern sector of the pluton our data suggest prevalently horizontal flows. In general, the Predazzo sheets indicate either upward magma flow or along-strike lateral magma transport, and the round shape suggests no influence of Ladinian tectonic structures. On the contrary, the ENE-WSW elongated shape of the Monzoni body was controlled by the occurrence of strike-slip faults associated with Ladinian-tectonics, the feeder being likely located at the NE edge of the body. However, the absence of deformation at the field- and micro-scale is consistent with a post Ladinian-tectonics timing of emplacement, as for the Predazzo pluton.

87Sr/86Sr was determined on fresh red and white grapes, soils and rocks from three selected vineyards to verify the isotopic relationships between the fruit of the vine and geologic substrata of vineyards. 87Sr/86Sr were determined on sampled grapes of four different harvest years and different grape varieties, on bioavailable fraction of soils, on whole soils, and on bedrocks from the geo-pedological substratum of the vineyards. The vineyards chosen for the experimental works belong to an organic farming winery and thus cultivation procedures were strictly controlled. Grapes were sampled during the harvests of four different but consecutive years with 87Sr/86Sr that does not change reflecting the values of the soil bioavailable fraction. No variations among grapes from different vine cultivars were observed. A strict isotope relationship with soil bio-available fraction was observed. These findings demonstrate the reliability of 87Sr/86Sr, even at a very small scale, for food products geographic origin assessment.

In this work we present new AMS and structural results from the Ferdows active fold-thrust system (Lut block, Central Iran). AMS analyses show that the Miocene units of the Upper Red Formation have a well defined magnetic fabric of tectonic origin, with both magnetic lineation and magnetic foliation oriented parallel to the regional fold axes. In most of the cases the magnetic fabric, acquired when the bedding was still horizontal, is related to different degrees of LPS shortening. In some other cases, the magnetic foliation is vertical and oblique to the bedding, suggesting that in the Ferdows thrust-fold structure a cleavage system, not visible at the outcrop scale, has been developed as a consequence of later shortening related to the activity of the thrust system, responsible of the recent earthquakes in the area. Results from this study establish a relationships between the recent tectonics of the area and the evolution of the magnetic fabric and demonstrate that a well defined magnetic fabric of pure tectonic origin can also develop in poorly deformed rocks lacking field evidence of pervasive internal deformation. According to previous paleomagnetic analyses, the northward latitudinal drift of Iran related to the closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean resulted in the Late Triassic collision of Iran with the Eurasian plate and Cimmerian orogeny. The post-Cimmerian paleogeographic and tectonic evolution of Iran is instead less well known. Here we present new paleomagnetic data from the Upper Jurassic Bidou Formation of Central Iran, which we used in conjunction with published paleomagnetic data to reconstruct the history of paleomagnetic rotations and latitudinal drift of Iran during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Paleomagnetic inclination values indicate that, during the Late Jurassic, the Central-East-Iranian Microcontinent (CEIM), consisting of the Yazd, Tabas, and Lut continental blocks, was located at low latitudes close to the Eurasian margin, in agreement with the position expected from apparent polar wander paths (APWP) incorporating the so-called Jurassic massive polar shift, a major event of plate motion occurring in the Late Jurassic from 160 Ma to 145–140 Ma. At these times, the CEIM was oriented WSW–ENE, with the Lut Block bordered to the south by the Neo-Tethys Ocean and to the southeast by the Neo-Sistan oceanic seaway. Subsequently, the CEIM underwent significant counter-clockwise (CCW) rotation during the Early Cretaceous. This rotation may have resulted from the northward propagation of the Sistan rifting- spreading axis during Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous, or to the subsequent (late Early Cretaceous?) eastward subduction and closure of the Sistan oceanic seaway underneath the continental margin of the Afghan Block. No rotations of, or within, the CEIM occurred during the Late Cretaceous–Oligocene, whereas a second phase of CCW rotation occurred after the Middle-Late Miocene. Both the Late Jurassic–Early Cretaceous and post Miocene CCW rotations are confined to the CEIM and do not seem to extend to other tectonic regions of Iran. Finally, an oroclinal bending mechanism is proposed for the origin of the curved Alborz Mountains, which acquired most of its curvature in the last 8 Myr.

The increase in the world wine market has required continued improvements in viticultural zoning in both old and young production regions. The many proposed zoning methods vary according to the study area in which they are applied as well as to the perspective of the authors. Thus, there is little agreement on which factors (climate, landscape, geology, soil and human intervention) should be taken into account. The aim of this work is to provide a methodology to optimize and possibly increase the development of wine production regions, identifying the zones with different potential suitability. We coupled the computation of bioclimatic indices based on Géoviticulture Multicriteria Climatic Classification System with a GIS (geographic information system) analysis based on the integration of easily accessible geological, morphometric and geomorphological data, in addition to viticulture land use. The final result of this methodology is a suitability map distinguishing sectors of different suitability for wine production in a vine cropping area. We tested the methodology on the Cesanese DOC (Denomination of Origin Verified) zone (Latium, central Italy). The resulting suitability map indicates that the areas more favourable for viticulture are only partially exploited, encouraging the possibility of increasing the production of high-quality wine in the Cesanese DOC area. This result underlines the applicability of our methodology in land-use planning and management.

In this study we use the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) and paleomagnetic data for deciphering the origin of magnetic lineation in weakly deformed sedimentary rocks and for evaluating oroclinal processes within the Arabia-Eurasia collision zone. In particular, we have analyzed the Miocene Upper Red Formation (URF) from the outer curved front of the southern Central Alborz Mountains of north Iran, to test for the first time with paleomagnetic data the origin (primary versus secondary) of this orogenic arc. AMS data document the existence of a magnetic lineation parallel to the orientation of the major tectonic structures, which vary along strike from WNW to ENE. These directions are highly oblique to the paleoflow directions and hence suggest that the magnetic lineation in the URF was produced by compressional deformation during layer-parallel shortening. In addition, our paleomagnetic data document clockwise and anticlockwise rotations along vertical axis for the western and eastern sectors of the Central Alborz Mountains, respectively. Combined, our results suggest that the orogen represents an orocline, which formed not earlier than circa 7.6 Ma most likely through bending processes caused by the relative motion between the rigid crustal blocks of the collision zone. Moreover, our study provides new insights into the Iran-Southern Caspian Basin kinematic evolution suggesting that the present-day SW motion of the South Caspian Basin with respect to Central Iran postdates oroclinal bending and hence cannot be as old as late Miocene to early Pliocene but a rather recent configuration (i.e., 3 to

In this study, we report an extensive paleomagnetic study (76 sites) carried out in the Alborz Mts. (northern Iran), with the aim of reconstructing the rotation history and the origin of curvature of this orogenic chain. The analyzed deposits are the sedimentary successions of the Upper Red Formation (Miocene), Lower Red Formation (Oligocene) and Eocene clastic units. Paleomagnetic results indicate that the Alborz Mts. can be considered a secondary arc that originated as a linear mountain belt that progressively acquired its present day curvature through opposite vertical axis rotations along its strike. The curvature of the arc was entirely acquired after the middle-late Miocene, which is the age of the youngest investigated sediments (Upper Red Formation). Overall, our paleomagnetic data indicate that the Alborz Mts. can be considered an orocline. Our results define, for the first time, the rotational history of the entire Alborz curved mountain belt, and enable us to reconstruct the paleogeographic and tectonic evolution of northern Iran in the framework of Arabia-Eurasia continental deformation. The kinematics inferred by the pattern of paleomagnetic rotations is at odds with the present day kinematics of northern Iran, characterized by the westward extrusion of the South Caspian block, and by a left lateral shear between Central Iran and the central and western sectors of the Alborz Mts. By integrating paleomagnetic data with stratigraphic, thermochronological, structural and GPS information, we propose that the initiation of South Caspian subduction and the activation of westward extrusion of South Caspian block occurred diachronously and that the initiation of the present-day kinematics of northern Iran was quite recent (Lower Pleistocene

International audience; Sedimentary basins in the interior of orogenic plateaus can provide unique insights into the early history of plateau evolution and related geodynamic processes. The northern sectors of the Iranian Plateau of the Arabia–Eurasia collision zone offer the unique possibility to study middle–late Miocene terrestrial clastic and volcaniclastic sediments that allow assessing the nascent stages of collisional plateau formation. In particular, these sedimentary archives allow investigating several debated and poorly understood issues associated with the long-term evolution of the Iranian Plateau, including the regional spatio-temporal characteristics of sedimentation and deformation and the mechanisms of plateau growth. We document that middle–late Miocene crustal shortening and thickening processes led to the growth of a basement-cored range (Takab Range Complex) in the interior of the plateau. This triggered the development of a foreland-basin (Great Pari Basin) to the east between 16.5 and 10.7 Ma. By 10.7 Ma, a fast progradation of conglomerates over the foreland strata occurred, most likely during a decrease in flexural subsidence triggered by rock uplift along an intraforeland basement-cored range (Mahneshan Range Complex). This was in turn followed by the final incorporation of the foreland deposits into the orogenic system and ensuing compartmentalization of the formerly contiguous foreland into several intermontane basins. Overall, our data suggest that shortening and thickening processes led to the outward and vertical growth of the northern sectors of the Iranian Plateau starting from the middle Miocene. This implies that mantle-flow processes may have had a limited contribution toward building the Iranian Plateau in NW Iran.

This multidisciplinary study conducted in the area covered by sheet 348 ‘‘Antrodoco’’ of the Geological Map of Italy contributes to the knowledge on an undissected intermontane basin located at the transition between the Gran Sasso and the Laga structural–paleogeographic domains in the highly seismic Apennine axial zone. Geomorphological analysis is used to infer the role of extensional faults and to provide a relative chronology of the capture phenomena that have led to a substantial reduction of the catchment area since the Early Pleistocene. Geophysical and stratigraphic data have been integrated into a 3D model, enabling evaluation of the thickness and geometry of the Quaternary sedimentary infilling. A stratigraphic study, chronologically constrained according to paleomagnetic results and 14C datings, highlights the occurrence of a major unconformity related to changes in the drainage network and suggests that during the Early Pleistocene, the Montereale Basin experienced an initial aggradation phase conditioned by the activity of local tectonic structures and then evolved under the influence of prevailing external factors. Finally, this study represents a complete and integrated approach. This approach makes possible, for the first time, the imposition of a number of firm constraints on the geometry and evolution of this under-explored intermontane basin, located in a key position along the Apennines.

We report on an extensive paleomagnetic study (36 sites) of the Tuscan Nappe succession from the Northern Apennines Arc, aimed to reconstruct the tectonic evolution of the internal sector of this chain. We analyzed Eocene pelagic foreland ramp deposits (Scaglia Toscana Formation) and Oligocene–lower Miocene siliciclastic turbidites (Macigno and Falterona Formations). Paleomagnetic results show that the internal sector of the Northern Apennines underwent large counterclockwise (CCW) rotations with respect to the Adria-Africa foreland. A decrease in the rotation magnitude was observed from the southern to the northern sector of the arc (from 91 to 36°). This trend is opposite to that observed in the more external units of Northern Apennines and demonstrates that the oroclinal bending model, which has been proposed for the external units of the chain, is not appropriate to explain the evolution of the internal sector of the arc. On the basis of the observed paleomagnetic pattern, we propose a new tectonic model in which the Tuscan and Falterona-Cervarola units in the southern area were first rotated CCW along with the Corsica-Sardinia block during its lower Miocene rotational drifting and were later involved in the main phases of rotational emplacement and translation toward the outermost sector (Umbria domain), thus yielding the final curved shape of the Northern Apennines chain. Data from this study represent the first paleomagnetic evidence of the influence of the Corsica-Sardinia CCW rotation in the Apennines orogenic wedge deformation, in the general framework of the geodynamic evolution of the Central Mediterranean subduction system.

""One of the major issues for understanding the tectonic evolution of continental regions is how pre-existing discontinuities influence the style and distribution of deformation, which is. often not obviously and uniquely connected to the plate-boundary kinematics. Iran represents one of the most instructive regions to study continental deformation, as here the present-day. Arabia–Eurasia convergence is accommodated in a very wide area over a range of structures.. The tectonic boundary between the Lut and the Tabas blocks of Central Iran currently accommodates. part of the Arabia–Eurasia convergence by right-lateral strike-slip faults, associated. with NNW–SSE oriented fold-related thrust. During Middle-Late Jurassic, this boundary was. the location of a large-scale shelf-lagoon carbonate platform-slope-to-basin depositional system,. mainly controlled by the activity of a N–S oriented normal fault system. In this study, the. geometry and the kinematics of the deformation at the tectonic boundary between the Lut and. the Tabas blocks, are reconstructed from an integrated anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility. (AMS) and structural analysis in the Upper Jurassic Garedu Red Beds Fm., outcropping at. the core of a NNE–SSW oriented syncline in the northern Shotori Range. AMS and structural. results indicate that the Upper Jurassic Garedu Red Beds Fm. syncline can be defined as. a transected fold, where the mismatch between fold hinge and magnetic fabric\\\/cleavage is. about 15. ◦. counter-clockwise, suggesting that this fold system formed as a consequence of. right-lateral transpressional tectonics. Results from this study thus document the evolution. of Jurassic normal faults to a transpressional tectonic boundary between the Tabas and Lut. crustal blocks sometime between the Lower Cretaceous and Palaeocene.""

Broad interest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions requires a better understanding of controls on carbon dioxide (CO2) release under different agricultural management practices. The objective of this study was to investigate and model seasonal variation of soil CO2 emissions from an apple orchard field (Malus domestica L. 'Starkrimson'). Soil CO2 emissions from an apple orchard managed with common practices were measured weekly over a 3-year period (May 2008 to May 2011) from both under the crowns of trees (CO2-UC) and between rows (CO2-BR) using a soda lime technique and were modeled using available environmental data. The study area is located in the Harran Plain of southeastern Turkey and has a semiarid climate. The weekly soil CO2 emissions ranged from 87.8 to 1428 kg week-1 ha-1, from 74.6 to 835 kg week-1 ha-1, and from 88.6 to 1087 kg week-1 ha-1 for CO2-UC, CO2-BR, and the average of both (CO2-AVG), respectively, and showed a pronounced seasonal pattern with the lowest emissions in winter (January and February) and the highest emissions during the growing season (April to December). Relative to 2008 emissions, 2009 CO2 emissions increased by approximately 75%, and 2010 emissions increased by approximately 88%. Comparison of 3 models (multiple linear regression, principal component regression, and multivariate adaptive regression splines) showed that multivariate adaptive regression splines provided the best performance in modeling soil CO2 emissions, explaining overall variation of 64%, 56%, 76%, and 53% in CO2-AVG for the first, second, third, and all three 3 periods, respectively. In conclusion, overall findings showed that soil CO2 emissions could be modeled by available environmental data such as air and soil temperature.

New 40Ar/39Ar ages and major and trace element geochemistry of the middle-late Miocene Cabo de Gata volcanic complex, southeast Spain, indicate that the volcanic activity of the Cabo de Gata volcanic zone developed over a short period through several pulses of geochemically and isotopically different parental magmas. The oldest volcanic rocks exposed in the Cabo de Gata volcanic zone are the shoshonite and high-K calc-Alkaline rocks of Bujo group, which cry - stallised from a parental magma transitional from calc-Alkaline to alkaline potassic generated through large degrees of partial melting, and then affected by a minor contribution from metasomatised veins and a larger one from the surrounding mantle wedge, in comparison to ultrapotassic melts. Subsequent partial melting of the mantle source produced typical calc-Alkaline parental magmas belonging to the Rodalquilar and Agua Amarga groups. Sr-Nd-Pb isotope and incompatible trace element distributions of Cabo de Gata rocks are in agreement with a mantle-wedge source affected by a two-fold metasomatism. The data suggested that mild potassic to sub-Alkaline subduction-related parental magmas (i.e., high-K calc-Alkaline and calc-Alkaline) were generated in the Cabo de Gata sector within a mantle wedge metasomatised by a fluid-dominated agent. In contrast, the enrichment in K2O of shoshonitic to ultrapotassic magmas was achieved through recycling of subducted sediments through melts that enriched the mantle wedge in K and related elements. Estimates of pyroclastic flow emplacement temperatures in the Cerro Galan ignimbrite and Toconquis Group ignimbrites were determined using thermal remanent magnetization of lithic clasts embedded within the deposits. These ignimbrites belong to the Cerro Galan volcanic system, one of the largest calderas in the world, in the Puna plateau, NW Argentina. Temperature estimates for the 2.08-Ma Cerro Galan ignimbrite are retrieved from 40 sites in 14 localities (176 measured clasts), distributed at different distances from the caldera and different stratigraphic heights. Additionally, temperature estimates were obtained from 27 sample sites (125 measured clasts) from seven ignimbrite units forming the older Toconquis Group (5.60–4.51 Ma), mainly outcropping along a type section at Rio Las Pitas, Vega Real Grande. The paleomagnetic data obtained by progressive thermal demagnetization show that the clasts of the Cerro Galan ignimbrite have one single magnetic component, oriented close to the expected geomagnetic field at the time of emplacement. Results show therefore that most of the clasts acquired a new magnetization oriented parallel to the magnetic field at the moment of the ignimbrite deposition, suggesting that the clasts were heated up to or above the highest blocking temperature (T b) of the magnetic minerals (T b = 580°C for magnetite; T b = 600–630°C for hematite). We obtained similar emplacement temperature estimations for six out of the seven volcanic units belonging to the Toconquis Group, with the exception of one unit (Lower Merihuaca), where we found two distinct magnetic components. The estimation of emplacement temperatures in this latter case is constrained at 580–610°C, which are lower than the other ignimbrites. These estimations are also in agreement with the lowest pre-eruptive magma temperatures calculated for the same unit (i.e., 790°C; hornblende–plagioclase thermometer; Folkes et al. 2011b). We conclude that the Cerro Galan ignimbrite and Toconquis Group ignimbrites were emplaced at temperatures equal to or higher than 620°C, except for Lower Merihuaca unit emplaced at lower temperatures. The homogeneity of high temperatures from proximal to distal facies in the Cerro Galan ignimbrite provides constraints for the emplacement model, marked by a relatively low eruption column, low levels of turbulence, air entrainment, surface–water interaction, and a high level of topographic confinement, all ensuring minimal heat loss.

The study of two sedimentary records sampled in the fluvio-lacustrine succession of high Salto river valley (Rieti, central Italy) was originated in the frame of the Geomorphologic Map of Italy ( APAT, 2008 ) field survey and improved with a multidisciplinary approach addressed to a better knowledge of the Plio-Pleistocene continental environments of central Apennines. The two successions are associated to different sedimentary facies, with lateral heteropic relations: the deposits cropping out at Marano de' Marsi are thought to represent deposition in the distal portion of a lacustrine delta, while those of Borgorose took place in a frankly lacustrine environment. The sediment succession from Marano de' Marsi (11 m) was sampled from an outcrop, the one from Borgorose (24.5 m) from a drillhole. Palaeomagnetic investigations carried out on both sediment records indicate a normal magnetic polarity and very low magnetic susceptibility values. In the record from Marano de' Marsi section, gymnosperm pollen is prevailing. Four main and short angiosperm arboreal pollen oscillations can however be observed, the oldest of which more marked. The gymnosperms are mainly represented by Pinus haploxylon type, Pinus sylvestris type, Cedrus , Picea , Abies , Cathaya , Tsuga , Taxodium type. Among angiosperms the dominant taxa , some of which at present extinct in Italy, are Quercus , Zelkova , Ulmus , Carya and Pterocarya . The presence of pollen of subtropical taxa as Nyssa , cfr. Rhoiptelea , Liquidambar , Engelhardia is worth to be mentioned. The investigation was integrated also by a preliminary study of macrofossils. Fossil impressions with some organic matter of angiosperm and gymnosperm leaves and seeds/fruits were ascribed to Acer cfr. monspessulanum , Carpinus cfr. orientalis , Engelhardia , Fagus , Hedera , Liquidambar , Quercus , Rosa , Abies and Pinus . The 24.5 m long sediment core from Borgorose resulted very poor in pollen, with the same list of arboreal taxa, at present extinct in Italy, found at Marano de' Marsi, and a diagram was drawn only for the stretch of the core between 3 and 8.2 m. Gymnosperms ( P. haploxylon type is dominant, and accompanied by P. sylvestris type, Picea , Taxodium type, Cedrus , and Tsuga ) are always prevailing. The results obtained by this interdisciplinary investigation indicate that Marano de' Marsi and Borgorose successions can be possibly attributed to the Upper Pliocene (normal polarity Olduvai subchron) even if an older age, considering the present state of the art on Pliocene continental records, and the peculiarity of the site and of the region, cannot be excluded.

SUMMARY Southern Apennines is characterized by active extensional tectonics with NE–SW stretching direction. The seismicity of the region is very well understood and continuously monitored. In contrast, the onset of extensional tectonics is chronologically poorly constrained. The aim of this study is that to give important constraints on the development of extensional regime and the onset of the continental deposition during Quaternary in Southern Apennines. We report the results of palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic analyses from four Quaternary small intramontane basins in the Picentini Mountains (Southern Apennines). The sedimentary sequences are located at different altitudes, from 600 to 1200 m a.s.l., and were deposited in fluvial-lacustrine environments. We sampled 29 sites in clays and lacustrine limestones from Tizzano, Piano del Gaudo and Acerno basins and in red palaeosoils and matrix-supported conglomerates from the Iumaiano basins. In the clay and limestones samples magnetite, titano-magnetite, hematite and iron-sulphide have been recognized as the main magnetic carriers, whereas magnetite and hematite characterize the Iumaiano conglomerates and red soils. Palaeomagnetic results have been integrated with published radiometric data in order to constrain the age of each sedimentary basins. Sites from the Iumaiano basin, which represents the substrate of the Tizzano and Piano del Gaudo basins, show a reverse polarity and therefore have been attributed to the lower Matuyama chron. In contrast, palaeomagnetic data from Tizzano basin show a transition from reversed to normal polarity along the exposed section, which has been interpreted as the Matuyama/Brunhes transition. Sites from Acerno and Piano del Gaudo basins show a normal polarity, which, according to radiometric and pollen data, have been correlated to the Brunhes epoch. On the base of such results we discuss the tectonostratigraphic evolution of the basins and the role of extensional tectonics in this portion of the Southern Apennine during the Quaternary.

New Late Ordovician and Triassic palaeomagnetic data from Iran are presented. These data, in conjunction with data from the literature, provide insights on the drift history of Iran as part of Cimmeria during the Ordovician-Triassic. A robust agreement of palaeomagnetic poles of Iran and West Gondwana is observed for the Late Ordovician-earliest Carboniferous, indicat- ing that Iran was part of Gondwana during that time. Data for the Late Permian-early Early Tri- assic indicate that Iran resided on subequatorial palaeolatitudes, clearly disengaged from the parental Gondwanan margin in the southern hemisphere. Since the late Early Triassic, Iran has been located in the northern hemisphere close to the Eurasian margin. This northward drift brought Iran to cover much of the Palaeotethys in approximately 35 Ma, at an average plate speed ofc. 7-8 cm year 21 , and was in part coeval to the transformation of Pangaea from an Irvin- gian B to a Wegenerian A-type configuration.

New structural, sedimentological, petrological and palaeomagnetic data collected in the region of Nakhlak-Anarak provide important constraints on the Cimmerian evolution of Central Iran. The Olenekian- Upper Ladinian succession of Nakhlak was deposited in a forearc setting, and records the exhumation and erosion of an orogenic wedge, possibly located in the present-day Anarak region. The Triassic succession was deformed after Ladinian times and shows south-vergent folds and thrusts unconformably covered by Upper Cretaceous limestones following the Late Jurassic Neo-Cimmerian deformation. Palaeomagnetic data obtained in the Olenekian succession suggest a palaeoposition of the region close to Eurasia at a latitude around 208N. In addition, the palaeopoles do not support large anticlockwise rotations around ver- tical axes for central Iran with respect to Eurasia since the Middle Triassic, as previously suggested. The Anarak Metamorphic Complex (AMC) includes blueschist-facies metabasites associated with discontinuous slivers of serpentinized ultramafic rocks and Carboniferous greenschist- facies 'Variscan' metamorphic rocks, including widespread metacarbonates. The AMC was formed, at least partially, in the Triassic. Its erosion is recorded by the Middle Triassic Baqoroq Formation at Nakhlak, which consists of conglomerates and sandstones rich in meta- morphic detritus. The AMC was repeatedly deformed during post-Triassic times, giving origin to a complex structural setting characterized by strong tectonic fragmentation of previously formed tectonic units. Based on these data, we suggest that the Nakhlak-Anarak units represent an arc-trench system developed during the Eo-Cimmerian orogenic cycle. Different tectonic scenarios that can account for the evolution of the region and for the occurrence of this orogenic wedge in its present position within Central Iran are critically discussed, as well as its relationships with a presumed 'Variscan' metamorphic event. The Cimmerian orogeny, affecting the southern Eurasian margin between Turkey and Thailand, is related to the collision of several microplates, most of which detached from northern Gondwana in the Early Permian during the opening of the

The edifice of Stromboli volcano gravitationally collapsed several immediately after the lateral collapse, which wrapped around col l aps ed s ever al t i mes dur i ng i t s vol cani c hi s t or y (>100 ka–present). The largest Holocene event occurred during the final stage of the Neostromboli activity (∼13– 5 ka), and was accompanied by the emplacement of phreatomagmatic and lahar deposits, known as the Secche di Lazzaro succession. A stratigraphic and paleomagnetic study of the Secche di Lazzaro deposits allows the interpretation of the emplacement and the eruptive process- es. We identify three main units within the succession that correspond to changing eruption conditions. The lower unit (UA) consists of accretionary lapilli-rich, thinly bedded, parallel- to cross-stratified ash deposits, interpreted to indicate the early stages of the eruption and emplacement of dilute pyroclastic density currents. Upward, the second unit (UB) of the deposit is more massive and the beds thicker, indicating an increase in the sedimentation rate from pyroclastic density currents. The upper unit (UC) caps the succession with thick, immediately post-eruptive lahars, which reworked ash deposited on the volcano’s slope. Flow directions obtained by Anisotropy of Magnetic Susceptibil- ity (AMS) analysis of the basal bed of UA at the type locality suggest a provenance of pyroclastic currents from the sea. This is interpreted to be related to the initial base- surges associated with water–magma interaction that occurred the shoulder of the sector collapse scar. Upward in the stratigraphy (upper beds of UA and UB) paleoflow directions change and show a provenance from the summit vent, pro- bably related to the multiple collapses of a vertical, pulsatory eruptive column.

The present-day arcuate shape of the Calabrian Arc has been accomplished during Neogene and Early Pleistocene by large and opposite vertical axis rotations along the two arms of the Arc. Clockwise (CW) rotations have been systematically registered in Sicily and Calabria, whereas counterclockwise (CCW) rotations were measured in Southern Apennines. Such opposite vertical axis rotations ceased in the uppermost part of the Lower Pleistocene (about 1 Ma ago) along almost the entire Calabrian Arc and are not observed in the present-day GPS velocity field. The end of the Calabrian Arc bending during the Quaternary marks a decrease in the efficiency of the tectonic processes related to the long-lived subduction of the Ionian slab, which caused the halting of the back-arc opening in the Southern Tyrrhenian Sea.

The Peperino Albano (approximately 19-36 ka old) is a phreatomagmatic pyroclastic flow deposit, cropping out along the slopes of the associated Albano maar (Colli Albani volcano, Italy). The deposit exhibits lateral and vertical transitions from valley pond to veneer facies, as well as intracrater facies. We present the results of a paleomagnetic study of thermal remanent magnetization (TRM) of the lithic clasts of the Peperino Albano ignimbrite that provide quantitative estimates of the range of emplacement temperatures across the different facies of the ignimbrite. Emplacement temperatures estimated for the Peperino Albano ignimbrite range between 240° and 350°C, with the temperatures defined in the intracrater facies being generally lower than in the valley pond and veneer facies. This is possibly due to the large size of the sampled clasts in the intracrater facies which, when coupled with low temperature at the vent, were not completely heated throughout their volume during emplacement. The emplacement temperatures derived from the paleomagnetic results are in good agreement with the presence of un-burnt plants at the base of the ignimbrite, indicating that the temperature of the pyroclastic flow was lower than the temperature of ignition of wood. Paleomagnetic results from the Peperino Albano confirm the reliability of the paleomagnetic approach in defining the thermal history of pyroclastic flow deposits. © Springer-Verlag 2007.

Recently high precision 87Sr/86Sr analyses have shown that Red wines keep the isotopic values of the vineyard substratum. Indeed, neither biological nor winemaking and aging processes are able to change the 87Sr/86Sr values through the oenological food chain from grapes to Red wine. In addition, 87Sr/86Sr of Red wines and those of rocks from the geological substratum of their vineyards correlate directly. The same holds not true for White wines, apparently. To investigate this discrepancy, 87Sr/86Sr has been determined for the entire production chain, from terroir to final product, of Red and White wines from the same vineyard. Sr-isotope data have been also determined for the young pyroclastic rocks of the geological substratum, and the soil of the vineyard to disambiguate the original contribution to the 87Sr/86Sr values of wines. Further Sr-isotope data have been determined on additives used for fining the White wine. The analytical results do not show significant differences between oenological food chains of Red and White wines. Preliminary data indicate that 87Sr/86Sr does not change passing from grape juices to wine in all cases under consideration. As a corollary neither yeast nor bentonite added during vinification of both Red and White wines do affect their Sr-isotopic values. On the other hand, 87Sr/86Sr of Red and White wines appears to be significantly lower than values observed in rocks of their substrata. Further experiments performed on this pilot winery would be useful to shed some lights on this issue.

Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data reveal heterogeneous pyroclastic flow processes and variable flow directions within the intra-caldera setting of the Permian rhyolitic welded Ora ignimbrite. Magnetic fabric is primary, orientated during the pyroclastic flow emplacement, and is controlled by paramagnetic and ferromagnetic mineral phases. The ignimbrite has typically weak mean magnetic susceptibilities (1.32–21.8×10 −4 SI) but with a large spread and low anisotropy degrees (1.003–1.023), which vary in different parts of the caldera. The intra-caldera magnetic fabric provides significant information on the dynamics of the intra-caldera setting, relating to changing vertical and lateral flow emplacement processes. AMS shape ellipsoids range from oblate to prolate; these are interpreted to reflect the heterogeneous nature of the flow resulting from the influence of underlying topography, constraints of the caldera walls, primary welding and post-emplacement mineral growth. We have identified different depositional units and possible eruptive source regions, indicating that more than one source fissure vent was active during eruption within this caldera system. The lateral variations demonstrate a meandering of flow pulses. The caldera margin acts as an obstacle in preventing and rebuffing certain flows from scaling the caldera margin.

9 figures, 1 table., New paleomagnetic results from Neogene sedimentary sequences from the Betic chain (Spain) are here presented. Sedimentary basins located in different areas were selected in order to obtain paleomagnetic data from structural domains that experienced different tectonic evolution during the Neogene. Whereas no rotations have been evidenced in the Late Tortonian sediments in the Guadalquivir foreland basin, clockwise vertical axis rotations have been measured in sedimentary basins located in the central part of the Betics: the Aquitanian to Messinian sediments in the Alcalà la Real basin and the Tortonian and Messinian sediments in the Granada basin. Moreover, counterclockwise vertical axis rotations, associated to left lateral strike-slip faults have been locally measured from sedimetary basins in the eastern Betics: the Middle Miocene to Lower Pliocene sites from the Lorca and Vera basins and, locally, the Tortonian units of the Huercal-Overa basin.
