The NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission performed a kinetic impact on asteroid Dimorphos, the satellite of the binary asteroid (65803) Didymos, at 23:14 UTC on September 26, 2022 as a planetary defense test. DART was the first hypervelocity impact experiment on an asteroid at size and velocity scales relevant to planetary defense, intended to validate kinetic impact as a means of asteroid deflection. Here we report the first determination of the momentum transferred to an asteroid by kinetic impact. Based on the change in the binary orbit period, we find an instantaneous reduction in Dimorphos's along-track orbital velocity component of 2.70 +/- 0.10 mm/s, indicating enhanced momentum transfer due to recoil from ejecta streams produced by the impact. For a Dimorphos bulk density range of 1,500 to 3,300 kg/m$^3$, we find that the expected value of the momentum enhancement factor, $\beta$, ranges between 2.2 and 4.9, depending on the mass of Dimorphos. If Dimorphos and Didymos are assumed to have equal densities of 2,400 kg/m$^3$, $\beta$= 3.61 +0.19/-0.25 (1 $\sigma$). These $\beta$ values indicate that significantly more momentum was transferred to Dimorphos from the escaping impact ejecta than was incident with DART. The revolutionary power of future Rubin-LSST observations will allow us to significantly improve the physics of pulsating stars, including RR Lyrae. In this context, an updated theoretical scenario predicting all the relevant pulsation observables in the corresponding photometric filters is mandatory. The bolometric light curves based on a recently computed extensive set of nonlinear convective pulsation models for RR Lyrae stars, covering a broad range in metal content and transformed into the Rubin-LSST photometric system. Predicted Rubin-LSST mean magnitudes and pulsation amplitudes have been adopted to built the Bailey diagrams (luminosity amplitude vs period) and the color-color diagrams in these bands. The current findings indicate that the gLSST-rLSST, rLSST-iLSST colors obey to a well defined linear relation with the metal content. Moreover, the Period Luminosity relations display in the reddest filters (rLSST,iLSST,zLSST,yLSST) a significant dependence on the assumed metal abundance. In particular, more metal-rich RR Lyrae are predicted to be fainter at fixed period. Metal-dependent Period-Wesenheit relations for different combinations of optical and NIR filters are also provided. These represent powerful tools to infer individual distances independently of reddening uncertainties, once the metal abundance is known and no relevant deviations from the adopted extinction law occur. Finally, we also derived new linear and quadratic absolute magnitude metallicity relations (gLSST vs [Fe/H]) and the metallicity coefficient is consistent with previous findings concerning the B and the V band., Comment: Accepted for publication on ApJ

Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube) is an Italian mission managed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and part of the NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) planetary defense mission. Its main goals are to document the effects of the DART impact on Dimorphos, the secondary member of the (65803) Didymos binary asteroid system, characterizing the shape of the target body and performing dedicated scientific investigations on it. Within this framework, the mission Science Operations Center will be managed by the Space Science Data Center (ASI-SSDC), which will have the responsibility of processing, archiving, and disseminating the data acquired by the two LICIACube onboard cameras. In order to better accomplish this task, SSDC also plans to use and modify its scientific webtool Multi-purpose Advanced Tool for Instruments for the solar system Exploration (MATISSE), making it the primary tool for the LICIACube data analysis, thanks to its advanced capabilities for searching and visualizing data, particularly useful for the irregular shapes common to several small bodies.

The Light Italian Cubesat for Imaging of Asteroids (LICIACube) is part of the NASA Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), the first mission aiming to demonstrate the applicability of the kinetic impactor method for planetary defense. The mission was launched on 2021 November 24 to perform the impact experiment on Dimorphos, the small secondary of the binary asteroid (65803) Didymos. The 6U LICIACube, stored as a piggyback of the DART spacecraft, is the first Italian mission operating in deep space managed by the Italian Space Agency that will witness the effects of the DART impact on Dimorphos. On board LICIACube, there is a suite of cameras that will perform imaging of Didymos and Dimorphos to investigate the DART impact effects and study the binary system. Among them, the LICIACube Unit Key Explorer (LUKE), a wide-angle camera coupled to an RGB Bayer pattern filter, will be pivotal to constrain the surface composition and heterogeneity of the binary system due to differences in surface properties linked with possible space weathering effects and/or the presence of exogenous material. Multiband photometric analysis of LUKE data and laboratory experiments in support of data interpretation will provide new insights on the binary asteroid nature and evolution. Moreover, photometric phase curve analysis will reveal the scattering properties of the granular surface medium providing important constraints for the microphysical properties of the Didymos–Dimorphos system. In this work, we will present the state of the art of the LUKE scientific activities with an overview of the instrument setup, science operations, and expected results.

We discuss the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic dataset of field RR Lyrae variables (RRLs) available to date. We estimated abundances using both high-resolution and low-resolution ({\Delta S} method) spectra for fundamental (RRab) and first overtone (RRc) RRLs. The iron abundances for 7,941 RRLs were supplemented with similar literature estimates available, ending up with 9,015 RRLs (6,150 RRab, 2,865 RRc). The metallicity distribution shows a mean value of = -1.51\pm0.01, and {\sigma}(standard deviation)= 0.41 dex with a long metal-poor tail approaching [Fe/H] = -3 and a sharp metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. The RRab variables are more metal-rich (ab = -1.48\pm0.01, {\sigma} = 0.41 dex) than RRc variables (c = -1.58\pm0.01, {\sigma} = 0.40 dex). The relative fraction of RRab variables in the Bailey diagram (visual amplitude vs period) located along the short-period (more metal-rich) and the long-period (more metal-poor) sequences are 80% and 20\%, while RRc variables display an opposite trend, namely 30\% and 70\%. We found that the pulsation period of both RRab and RRc variables steadily decreases when moving from the metal-poor to the metal-rich regime. The visual amplitude shows the same trend, but RRc amplitudes are almost two times more sensitive than RRab amplitudes to metallicity. We also investigated the dependence of the population ratio (Nc/Ntot) of field RRLs on the metallicity and we found that the distribution is more complex than in globular clusters. The population ratio steadily increases from ~0.25 to ~0.36 in the metal-poor regime, it decreases from ~0.36 to ~0.18 for -1.8 < [Fe/H] < -0.9 and it increases to a value of ~0.3 approaching solar iron abundance., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables. We present the discovery of variable stars in two isolated dwarf galaxies in the outskirts of the Local Group, VV 124 and KKr 25, using observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. VV 124 hosts stellar populations with a wide range of ages (>10 Gyr until the present) and therefore we find all types of classical pulsators. In VV 124, we detect a total of 771 variable stars, including 78 classical Cepheids, 10 anomalous Cepheids, one Type II Cepheid, 678 RR Lyrae stars, and four eclipsing binaries. In KKr 25, we find 25 anomalous Cepheids, 46 RR Lyrae stars, and no classical Cepheids, thus the galaxy does not have a strong young population. A comparison of the variables with evolutionary tracks suggests that both galaxies may contain an intrinsic spread in metallicity, but overall are fairly metal-poor. We also present detailed simulations, which have been designed to estimate the completeness of our variable catalog. Particularly in the cases for which the observations are not deep enough to reach the main-sequence turnoff, such as the more distant Local Group dwarf galaxies, the techniques developed here can be used together with relatively shallow color-magnitude diagrams to inform on the nature of galactic populations over the full range of ages.

We provide the largest and most homogeneous sample of $\alpha$-element (Mg, Ca, Ti) and iron abundances for field RR Lyrae (RRLs, 162 variables) by using high-resolution spectra. The current measurements were complemented with similar abundances available in the literature for 46 field RRLs brought to our metallicity scale. We ended up with a sample of old (t$\ge$ 10 Gyr), low-mass stellar tracers (208 RRLs: 169 fundamental, 38 first overtone, 1 mixed mode) covering three dex in iron abundance (-3.00$\le$[Fe/H]$\le$0.24). We found that field RRLs are $\sim$0.3 dex more $\alpha$-poor than typical Halo tracers in the metal-rich regime, ([Fe/H]$\ge$-1.2) while in the metal-poor regime ([Fe/H]$\le$-2.2) they seem to be on average $\sim$0.1 dex more $\alpha$-enhanced. This is the first time that the depletion in $\alpha$-elements for solar iron abundances is detected on the basis of a large, homogeneous and coeval sample of old stellar tracers. Interestingly, we also detected a close similarity in the [$\alpha$/Fe] trend between $\alpha$-poor, metal-rich RRLs and red giants (RGs) in the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy as well as between $\alpha$-enhanced, metal-poor RRLs and RGs in ultra faint dwarf galaxies. These results are supported by similar elemental abundances for 46 field Horizontal Branch (HB) stars. These stars share with RRLs the same evolutionary phase and the same progenitors. This evidence further supports the key role that old stellar tracers play in constraining the early chemical enrichment of the Halo and, in particular, in investigating the impact that dwarf galaxies have had in the mass assembly of the Galaxy.

Accurate metallicities of RR Lyrae are extremely important in constraining period-luminosity-metallicity relationships (PLZ), particularly in the near-infrared. We analyse 69 high-resolution spectra of Galactic RR Lyrae stars from the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT). We measure metallicities of 58 of these RR Lyrae stars with typical uncertainties of 0.13 dex. All but one RR Lyrae in this sample has accurate ({\sigma}_parallax ~ 10%) parallax from Gaia. Combining these new high resolution spectroscopic abundances with similar determinations from the literature for 93 stars, we present new PLZ relationships in WISE W1 and W2 magnitudes, and the Wesenheit magnitudes W(W1,V-W1) and W(W2,V-W2)., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted in MNRAS

We performed the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic survey of field RR Lyraes (RRLs). We secured $\approx$6,300 high resolution (HR, R$\sim$35,000) spectra for 143 RRLs (111 fundamental, RRab; 32 first overtone, RRc). The atmospheric parameters were estimated by using the traditional approach and the iron abundances were measured by using an LTE line analysis. The resulting iron distribution shows a well defined metal-rich tail approaching solar iron abundance. This suggests that field RRLs experienced a complex chemical enrichment in the early halo formation. We used these data to develop a new calibration of the $\Delta$S method. This diagnostic, based on the equivalent widths of CaII K and three Balmer (H$_{\delta,\gamma,\beta}$) lines, traces the metallicity of RRLs. For the first time the new empirical calibration: i) includes spectra collected over the entire pulsation cycle; ii) includes RRc variables; iii) relies on spectroscopic calibrators covering more than three dex in iron abundance; iv) provides independent calibrations based on one/two/three Balmer lines. The new calibrations were applied to both SEGUE-SDSS and degraded HR spectra totalling 6,451 low resolution (LR, R$\sim$2,000) spectra for 5,001 RRLs (3,439 RRab, 1,562 RRc). This resulted in an iron distribution with a median of -1.55$\pm$0.01 and $\sigma$=0.51 dex, in good agreement with literature values. We also found that RRc are 0.10 dex more metal-poor than RRab variables, and have a distribution with a smoother metal-poor tail. This finding supports theoretical prescriptions suggesting a steady decrease in the RRc number when moving from metal-poor to metal-rich stellar environments., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We report the possible discovery of a new stellar system (YMCA-1), identified during a search for small scale overdensities in the photometric data of the YMCA survey. The object's projected position lies on the periphery of the Large Magellanic Cloud about $13^\circ$ apart from its center. The most likely interpretation of its color-magnitude diagram, as well as of its integrated properties, is that YMCA-1 may be an old and remote star cluster of the Milky Way at a distance of 100 kpc from the Galactic center. If this scenario could be confirmed, then the cluster would be significantly fainter and more compact than most of the known star clusters residing in the extreme outskirts of the Galactic halo, but quite similar to Laevens~3. We present a detailed study of the variable star population of Eridanus II (Eri II), an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy that lies close to the Milky Way virial radius. We analyze multi-epoch $g,r,i$ ground-based data from Goodman and the Dark Energy Camera, plus $F475W, F606W, F814W$ space data from the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We report the detection of 67 RR Lyrae (RRL) stars and 2 Anomalous Cepheids, most of them new discoveries. With the RRL stars, we measure the distance modulus of Eri II, $��_0=22.84\pm 0.05$ mag (D$_{\odot}=370\pm9$ kpc) and derive a metallicity spread of 0.3 dex (0.2 dex intrinsic). The colour distribution of the horizontal branch (HB) and the period distribution of the RRL stars can be nicely reproduced by a combination of two stellar models of [Fe/H]=($-2.62$, $-2.14$). The overall low metallicity is consistent with the red giant branch bump location, 0.65 mag brighter than the HB. These results are in agreement with previous spectroscopic studies. The more metal-rich RRL and the RRab stars have greater central concentration than the more metal-poor RRL and the RRc stars that are mainly located outside $\sim 1$ r$_{\rm h}$. This is similar to what is found in larger dwarf galaxies such as Sculptor, and in agreement with an outside-in galaxy formation scenario. This is remarkable in such a faint dwarf galaxy with an apparently single and extremely short ($, 20 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We collected the largest spectroscopic catalog of RR Lyrae (RRLs) including $\approx$20,000 high-, medium- and low-resolution spectra for $\approx$10,000 RRLs. We provide the analytical forms of radial velocity curve (RVC) templates. These were built using 36 RRLs (31 fundamental -- split into three period bins -- and 5 first overtone pulsators) with well-sampled RVCs based on three groups of metallic lines (Fe, Mg, Na) and four Balmer lines (H$_\alpha$, H$_\beta$, H$_\gamma$, H$_\delta$). We tackled the long-standing problem of the reference epoch to anchor light curve and RVC templates. For the $V$-band, we found that the residuals of the templates anchored to the phase of the mean magnitude along the rising branch are $\sim$35\% to $\sim$45\% smaller than those anchored to the phase of maximum light. For the RVC, we used two independent reference epochs for metallic and Balmer lines and we verified that the residuals of the RVC templates anchored to the phase of mean RV are from 30\% (metallic lines) up to 45\% (Balmer lines) smaller than those anchored to the phase of minimum RV. We validated our RVC templates by using both the single- and the three-phase points approach. We found that barycentric velocities based on our RVC templates are two-three times more accurate than those available in the literature. We applied the current RVC templates to Balmer lines RVs of RRLs in the globular NGC~3201 collected with MUSE at VLT. We found the cluster barycentric RV of $V_{\gamma}$=496.89$\pm$8.37(error)$\pm$3.43 (standard deviation) km/s, which agrees well with literature estimates.

MAORY is the MCAO module for the ELT. It feeds MICADO and a still to be defined second port instrument. The ”Science Operation” Working Group of MAORY focuses the activity on the simulation of the science cases proposed for the instrument, deriving in this way the achievable performance in different observing conditions, as can be the case of a crowded globular cluster or an almost star-empty frame on a high-z target. In this paper, we discuss the recent activities of the WP focusing on the numerical simulations environment we built and on the contribution to the Operational Concept Description of MAORY.

The separation between RR Lyrae (RRLs) and type II Cepheid (T2Cs) variables based on their period is debated. Both types of variable stars are distance indicators, and we aim to promote the use of T2Cs as distance indicators in synergy with RRLs. We adopted new and existing optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry ofωCen to investigate several diagnostics (color-magnitude diagram, Bailey diagram, Fourier decomposition of the light curve, and amplitude ratios) for their empirical separation. We found that the classical period threshold at one day is not universal and does not dictate the evolutionary stage: V92 has a period of 1.3 days but is likely to be still in its core helium-burning phase, which is typical of RRLs. We also derived NIR period-luminosity relations and found a distance modulus of 13.65 ± 0.07 (err.) ± 0.01 (σ) mag, in agreement with the recent literature. We also found that RRLs and T2Cs obey the same period-luminosity relations in the NIR. This equivalence provides the opportunity of adopting RRLs+T2Cs as an alternative to classical Cepheids to calibrate the extragalactic distance scale.

We collected over 6000 high-resolution spectra of four dozen field RR Lyrae (RRL) variables pulsating either in the fundamental (39 RRab) or in the first overtone (9 RRc) mode. We measured radial velocities (RVs) of four strong metallic and four Balmer lines along the entire pulsational cycle and derived RV amplitudes with accuracies better than 1$-$2~\kmsec. The new amplitudes were combined with literature data for 23~RRab and 3~RRc stars (total sample 74 RRLs) which allowed us to investigate the variation of the Bailey diagram (photometric amplitude versus period) when moving from optical to mid-infrared bands and to re-cast the Bailey diagram in terms of RV amplitudes. We found that RV amplitudes for RRab are minimally affected by nonlinear phenomena (shocks) and multi-periodicity (Blazhko effect). The RV slope ($\log P$--A(V$_r$)) when compared with the visual slope ($\log P$--A($V$)) is shallower and the dispersion, at fixed period, decreases by a factor of two. We constructed homogeneous sets of Horizontal Branch evolutionary models and nonlinear, convective pulsation models of RRLs to constrain the impact of evolutionary effects on their pulsation properties. Evolution causes, on the Bailey diagram based on RV amplitudes, a modest variation in pulsation period and a large dispersion in amplitude. The broad dispersion in period of the Bailey diagram is mainly caused by variation in RRL intrinsic parameters (stellar mass, chemical composition). The YMCA (Yes, Magellanic Clouds Again) and STEP ({The SMC in Time: Evolution of a Prototype interacting late-type dwarf galaxy) projects are deep g,i photometric surveys carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope (VST) and devoted to study the outskirts of the Magellanic System. A main goal of YMCA and STEP is to identify candidate stellar clusters and complete their census out to the outermost regions of the Magellanic Clouds. We adopted a specific over-density search technique coupled with a visual inspection of the color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) to select the best candidates and estimate their ages. To date, we analysed a region of 23 sq. deg. in the outskirts of the Large Magellanic Cloud, detecting 85 candidate cluster candidates, 16 of which have estimated ages falling in the so called "age gap". We present a novel analysis of a young star cluster in the Large Magellanic cloud, R136-like, as seen by the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). The main aim of this study is to quantify precision and accuracy of stellar proper motion measurements in crowded field when using an ELT working at its diffraction limit. This can serve as a reference study for future development of ELT scientific cases. In particular, we investigate our future ability to detect the dynamical signature of intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) with mass ∼104 M⊙ through detailed measurements of stellar proper motions. We have simulated two N-body dynamical cluster models with and without an IMBH. For each model, we have chosen two snapshots temporally spaced by 5 yr. Stellar fluxes in IJHK filters and star positions have been used to create ELT mock images for both single- and multiconjugate adaptive optics observing modes following the requierements given by ESO technical specifications for the first light imager. These images have been analysed using a classical software for seeing-limited data reduction, daophot/allstar. We make accurate photometry till the very faint pre-main-sequence stars, i.e. depending on the adaptive optics (AO) mode, magnitudes down to K ∼ 24 mag (single-conjugate AO) or K ∼ 22 mag (multiconjugate AO) in a total integration time of 20 min on target. Although daophot suite of programs is not devoted to precise astrometry, the astrometric accuracy is impressive, reaching few μas yr−1 or km s−1. In these assumptions, we are able to detect the IMBH signature at the centre of the cluster.

The overwhelming majority of objects visible to LSST lie within the Galactic Plane. Though many previous surveys have avoided this region for fear of stellar crowding, LSST's spatial resolution combined with its state-of-the-art Difference Image Analysis mean that it can conduct a high cadence survey of most of the Galaxy for the first time. Here we outline the many areas of science that would greatly benefit from an LSST survey that included the Galactic Plane, Magellanic Clouds and Bulge at a cadence of 2-3 d. Particular highlights include measuring the mass spectrum of black holes, and mapping the population of exoplanets in the Galaxy in relation to variations in star forming environments. But the same survey data will provide a goldmine for a wide range of science, and we explore possible survey strategies which maximize the scientific return for a number of fields including young stellar objects, cataclysmic variables and Neptune Trojans.

Theory and observations indicate that the distribution of stars along the horizontal branch of Galactic globular clusters mainly depends on the metal content. However, the existence of globular clusters with similar metal content and absolute age but different horizontal branch morphologies, suggests the presence of another parameter affecting the star distribution along the branch. To investigate the variation of the horizontal branch morphology in Galactic globular clusters, we define a new photometric horizontal branch morphology index, overcoming some of the limitations and degeneracies affecting similar indices available in the literature. We took advantage of a sample of 64 Galactic globular clusters, with both space-based imaging data and homogeneous ground-based photometric catalogues in five different bands ($U$,$B$,$V$, $R$, $I$). The new index, $\tau_{HB}$, is defined as the ratio between the areas subtended by the cumulative number distribution in magnitude ($I$) and in colour ($V-I$) of all stars along the horizontal branch. This new index shows a linear trend over the entire range in metallicity (-2.35 $\leq$ [Fe/H] $\leq$ -0.12) covered by our Galactic globular cluster sample. We found a linear relation between $\tau_{HB}$ and absolute cluster ages. We also found a quadratic anti-correlation with [Fe/H], becoming linear when we eliminate the age effect on $\tau_{HB}$ values. Moreover, we identified a subsample of eight clusters that are peculiar according to their $\tau_{HB}$ values. These clusters have bluer horizontal branch morphology when compared to typical ones of similar metallicity. These findings allow us to define them as the 'second parameter' clusters in the sample. Time series observations of a single dithered field centered on the diffuse dwarf satellite galaxy Crater II were obtained with the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) at the 4m Blanco Telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile, uniformly covering up to two half-light radii. Analysis of the $g$ and $i$ time series results in the identification and characterization of 130 periodic variable stars, including 98 RR Lyrae stars, 7 anomalous Cepheids, and 1 SX Phoenicis star belonging to the Crater II population, and 24 foreground variables of different types. Using the large number of ab-type RR Lyrae stars present in the galaxy, we obtained a distance modulus to Crater II of $(m-M)_0=20.333\pm 0.004$ (stat) $\pm 0.07$ (sys). The distribution of the RR Lyrae stars suggests an elliptical shape for Crater II, with an ellipticity of 0.24 and a position angle of $153^\circ$. From the RR Lyrae stars we infer a small metallicity dispersion for the old population of Crater II of only 0.17 dex. There are hints that the most metal-poor stars in that narrow distribution have a wider distribution across the galaxy, while the slightly more metal rich part of the population is more centrally concentrated. Given the features in the color-magnitude diagram of Crater II, the anomalous Cepheids in this galaxy must have formed through a binary evolution channel of an old population., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We developed a new approach to provide accurate estimates of metal content, reddening and true distance modulus of RR Lyrae stars (RRLs). The method is based on homogeneous optical ($BVI$) and near-infrared ($JHK$) mean magnitudes and on predicted period--luminosity--metallicity relations ($IJHK$) and absolute mean magnitude--metallicity relations ($BV$). We obtained solutions for three different RRL samples in $\omega$ Cen: first overtone (RRc,~90), fundamental (RRab,~80) and global (RRc+RRab) in which the period of first overtones were fundamentalized. The metallicity distribution shows a well defined peak at [Fe/H]$\sim$--1.98 and a standard deviation of $\sigma$=0.54 dex. The spread is, as expected, metal-poor ([Fe/H]$\le$--2.3) objects. The current metallicity distribution is $\sim$0.3 dex more metal-poor than similar estimates for RRLs available in the literature. The difference vanishes if the true distance modulus we estimated is offset by --0.06/--0.07~mag in true distance modulus. We also found a cluster true distance modulus of $\mu$=13.720$\pm$0.002$\pm$0.030~mag, where the former error is the error on the mean and the latter is the standard deviation. Moreover, we found a cluster reddening of E($B-V$)=0.132$\pm$0.002$\pm$0.028~mag and spatial variations of the order of a few arcmin across the body of the cluster. Both the true distance modulus and the reddening are slightly larger than similar estimates available in the literature, but the difference is within 1$\sigma$. The metallicity dependence of distance diagnostics agree with theory and observations, but firm constraints require accurate and homogeneous spectroscopic measurements.

We present a deep Blanco/DECam colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) for the large but very diffuse Milky Way satellite dwarf galaxy Crater II. The CMD shows only old stars with a clearly bifurcated subgiant branch (SGB) that feeds a narrow red giant branch. The horizontal branch (HB) shows many RR Lyrae and red HB stars. Comparing the CMD with [Fe/H] = -2.0 and [$\alpha$/Fe] = +0.3 alpha-enhanced BaSTI isochrones indicates a mean age of 12.5 Gyr for the main event and a mean age of 10.5 Gyr for the brighter SGB. With such multiple star formation events Crater II shows similarity to more massive dwarfs that have intermediate age populations, however for Crater II there was early quenching of the star formation and no intermediate age or younger stars are present. The spatial distribution of Crater II stars overall is elliptical in the plane of the sky, the detailed distribution shows a lack of strong central concentration, and some inhomogeneities. The 10.5 Gyr subgiant and upper main sequence stars show a slightly higher central concentration when compared to the 12.5 Gyr population. Matching to Gaia DR2 we find the proper motion of Crater II: $\mu_{\alpha}\cos \delta$=-0.14 $\pm$ 0.07 , $\mu_{\delta}$=-0.10 $\pm$ 0.04 mas yr$^{-1}$, approximately perpendicular to the semi-major axis of Crater II. Our results provide constraints on the star formation and chemical enrichment history of Crater II, but cannot definitively determine whether or not substantial mass has been lost over its lifetime., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 3 tables. We collected a large data set of field RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) by using catalogues already available in the literature and Gaia DR2. We estimated the iron abundances for a sub-sample of 2,382 fundamental RRLs ($\Delta$S method: CaIIK, H$\beta$, H$\gamma$ and H$\delta$ lines) for which are publicly available medium-resolution SDSS-SEGUE spectra. We also included similar estimates available in the literature ending up with the largest and most homogeneous spectroscopic data set ever collected for RRLs (2,903). The metallicity scale was validated by using iron abundances based on high resolution spectra for a fundamental field RRL (V~Ind), for which we collected X-shooter spectra covering the entire pulsation cycle. The peak ([Fe/H]=-1.59$\pm$0.01) and the standard deviation ($\sigma$=0.43 dex) of the metallicity distribution agree quite well with similar estimates available in the literature. The current measurements disclose a well defined metal-rich tail approaching Solar iron abundance. The spectroscopic sample plotted in the Bailey diagram (period vs luminosity amplitude) shows a steady variation when moving from the metal-poor ([Fe/H]=-3.0/-2.5) to the metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.5/0.0) regime. The smooth transition in the peak of the period distribution as a function of the metallicity strongly indicates that the long-standing problem of the Oosterhoff dichotomy among Galactic globulars is the consequence of the lack of metal-intermediate clusters hosting RRLs. We also found that the luminosity amplitude, in contrast with period, does not show a solid correlation with metallicity. We present newly-calibrated period-$\phi_{31}$-[Fe/H] relations for fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars in the optical and, for the first time, mid-infrared. We present a chemo-dynamical study of the Orphan stellar stream using a catalog of RR~Lyrae pulsating variable stars for which photometric, astrometric, and spectroscopic data are available. Employing low-resolution spectra from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), we determined line-of-sight velocities for individual exposures and derived the systemic velocities of the RR~Lyrae stars. In combination with the stars' spectroscopic metallicities and \textit{Gaia} EDR3 astrometry, we investigated the northern part of the Orphan stream. In our probabilistic approach, we found 20 single mode RR~Lyrae variables likely associated with the Orphan stream based on their positions, proper motions, and distances. The acquired sample permitted us to expand our search to nonvariable stars in the SDSS dataset, utilizing line-of-sight velocities determined by the SDSS. We found 54 additional nonvariable stars linked to the Orphan stream. The metallicity distribution for the identified red giant branch stars and blue horizontal branch stars is, on average, $-2.13\pm0.05$ dex and $-1.87\pm0.14$ dex, with dispersions of 0.23 and 0.43dex, respectively. The metallicity distribution of the RR~Lyrae variables peaks at $-1.80\pm0.06$ dex and a dispersion of 0.25dex. Using the collected stellar sample, we investigated a possible link between the ultra-faint dwarf galaxy Grus II and the Orphan stream. Based on their kinematics, we found that both the stream RR~Lyrae and Grus II are on a prograde orbit with similar orbital properties, although the large uncertainties on the dynamical properties render an unambiguous claim of connection difficult. At the same time, the chemical analysis strongly weakens the connection between both. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the characterization of the general properties of the Long Period Comets (LPCs) family, and in particular to report on the dust environment of comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd).The comet was observed at two epochs pre-perihelion, at ~6 AU and at ~2.5 AU: broad-band images have been used to investigate its coma morphology and properties and to model the dust production rate.Comet C/2009 P1 (Garradd) is one of the most active and "dust producing" LPCs ever observed, even at the large heliocentric distance rh~6 AU. Its coma presents a complex morphology, with subtle structures underlying the classical fan-shaped tail, and, at rh~2.5 AU, also jet-like structures and spiralling outflows. In the reference aperture of radius ρ=5°×104 km, the R-Afρ is 3693±156 cm and 6368±412 cm, in August 2010 (rh~6 AU) and July 2011 (rh~2.5 AU), respectively. The application of a first order photometric model, under realistic assumptions on grain geometric albedo, power-law dust size distribution, phase darkening function and grain dust outflow velocity, yielded a measure of the dust production rate for the two epochs of observation of Qd=7.27×102 kg/s and Qd=1.37×103 kg/s, respectively, for a reference outflow dust velocity of vsmall=25 m/s for small (0.1-10 μm) grains and vlarge=1 m/s for large (10 μm-1 cm) grains.These results suggest that comet Garradd is one of the most active minor bodies observed in recent years, highly contributing to the continuous replenishment of the Interplanetary Dust Complex also in the outer Solar System, and pose important constraints on the mechanism(s) driving the cometary activity at large heliocentric distances. Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time, LSST, will revolutionize modern astronomy by producing an extremely deep (coadded depth ~27 mag) depth-limited survey of the entire southern sky (LSST Science Collaboration et al. 2009). The 8.4 m large-aperture, wide-field telescope, which is based in Cerro Pachon, will image the entire Southern sky every three nights in multiple bands (SDSS-u, g, r, i, z, y) and produce a fire-hose of data, 20 Tb each night, concluding in a 60 petabyte data set as the legacy of the 10 yr survey. Extracting meaningful light curves from variable objects requires difference imaging to both identify variability and calibrate light curve data products. Templates, co-added groups of visits that act as an image of the "static" sky, are a key component of Difference Imaging Analysis (DIA) and as such are of paramount importance for all science that involves variable objects. As the "non-time-critical" science cases discussed here are mostly periodic, they generally do not depend upon the survey alert stream; however, templates are still crucial for performing science and calibrations during the first year. We provide recommendations for observing strategies for template acquisition starting from commissioning and through Year 1 of the survey.

Old-aged stellar distance indicators are present in all Galactic structures (halo, bulge, disk) and in galaxies of all Hubble types and, thus, are immensely powerful tools for understanding our Universe. Here we present a comprehensive review for three primary standard candles from Population II: (i) RR Lyrae type variables (RRL), (ii) type II Cepheid variables (T2C), and (iii) the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). The discovery and use of these distance indicators is placed in historical context before describing their theoretical foundations and demonstrating their observational applications across multiple wavelengths. The methods used to establish the absolute scale for each standard candle is described with a discussion of the observational systematics. We conclude by looking forward to the suite of new observational facilities anticipated over the next decade; these have both a broader wavelength coverage and larger apertures than current facilities. We anticipate future advancements in our theoretical understanding and observational application of these stellar populations as they apply to the Galactic and extragalactic distance scale.

We present a detailed spectroscopic analysis of horizontal branch stars in the globular cluster NGC 3201. We collected optical (4580-5330 Å), high-resolution (∼34,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (∼200) spectra for 11 RR Lyrae stars and one red horizontal branch star with the multifiber spectrograph M2FS with the 6.5 m Magellan telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory. From measured equivalent widths, we derived atmospheric parameters and abundance ratios for α (Mg, Ca, and Ti), iron-peak (Sc, Cr, Ni, and Zn), and s-process (Y) elements. We found that NGC 3201 is a homogeneous, monometallic ([Fe/H] = -1.47 ± 0.04), α-enhanced ([α/Fe] = 0.37 ± 0.04) cluster. The relative abundances of the iron-peak and s-process elements were found to be consistent with solar values. In comparison with other large stellar samples, NGC 3201 RR Lyraes have similar chemical enrichment histories as do those of other old (t ≥ 10 Gyr) Halo components (globular clusters; red giants; blue and red horizontal branch stars; and RR Lyraes). We also provided a new average radial velocity estimate for NGC 3201 by using a template velocity curve to overcome the limit of single-epoch measurements of variable stars: Vrad = 494 ± 2 km s-1 (σ = 8 km s-1). MAORY is one of the approved instruments for the European Extremely Large Telescope. It is an adaptive optics module, enabling high-angular resolution observations in the near infrared by real-time compensation of the wavefront distortions due to atmospheric turbulence and other disturbances such as wind action on the telescope. An overview of the instrument design is given in this paper.

Airborne dust characterization is a critical aspect in space missions to Mars. Dust is always present in the Martian atmosphere, with different concentration depending on the season, and its characterization is a key element in understanding Mars global climate. MicroMED is an optical particle counter that has been selected to be part of the ExoMars 2020 mission as one of the sensors of the Russian “Dust Complex” suite and it has been designed to characterize dust in Martian atmosphere, measuring size distribution and concentration of airborne mineral grains. CFD simulations were performed in order to optimize the instrument sampling efficiency and its ability to correctly characterize dust grains in the 0.4-20 µm diameter range. The analysis allowed to derive the optimum environmental conditions for tests and operations on Mars and provided key information on how to optimize MicroMED's fluid dynamic design, improving the performances of the instrument.

We present the first spectroscopic abundance determination of iron, alpha-elements (Si, Ca and Ti) and sodium for the Mira variable V1 in the metal-rich globular cluster NGC 5927. We use high-resolution (R~ 28,000), high signal-to-noise ratio (~200) spectra collected with WINERED, a near-infrared (NIR) spectrograph covering simultaneously the wavelength range 0.91--1.35 micron. The effective temperature and the surface gravity at the pulsation phase of the spectroscopic observation were estimated using both optical (V) and NIR time-series photometric data. We found that the Mira is metal-rich ([Fe/H]=-0.55 \pm 0.15) and moderately alpha-enhanced ([alpha/Fe]=0.15 \pm 0.01, sigma=0.2). These values agree quite well with the mean cluster abundances based on high-resolution optical spectra of several cluster red giants available in the literature ([Fe/H]=-0.47 \pm 0.06, [alpha/Fe]=+0.24 \pm 0.05). We also found a Na abundance of +0.35 \pm 0.20 that is higher than the mean cluster abundance based on optical spectra (+0.18 \pm 0.13). However, the lack of similar spectra for cluster red giants and that of corrections for departures from local-thermodynamical equilibrium prevents us from establishing whether the difference is intrinsic or connected with multiple populations. These findings indicate a strong similarity between optical and NIR metallicity scales in spite of the difference in the experimental equipment, data analysis and in the adopted spectroscopic diagnostics., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, 9 pages, 3 figures

We present a search and analysis of variable stars in the recently discovered Crater~II dwarf galaxy. Based on $B$, $V$, $I$ data collected with the Isaac Newton Telescope (FoV$\sim$0.44 square degrees) we detected 37 variable stars, of which 34 are bone-fide RR Lyrae stars of Crater~II (28 RRab, 4 RRc, 2 RRd). We applied the metal-independent ($V$, $B-V$) Period--Wesenheit relation and derived a true distance modulus ($\mu$ = 20.30$\pm$0.08 mag ($\sigma$=0.16 mag). Individual metallicities for RR Lyrae stars were derived by inversion of the predicted $I$-band Period-Luminosity relation. We find a mean metallicity of [Fe/H]=-1.64 and a standard deviation of $\sigma_{[Fe/H]}$ =0.21 dex, compatible with either negligible or vanishing intrinsic metallicity dispersion. Here we review the efforts of a number of recent results that use old tracers to understand the build up of the Galaxy. Details that lead directly to using these old tracers to measure distances are discussed. We concentrate on the following: (1) the structure and evolution of the Galactic bulge and inner Galaxy constrained from the dynamics of individual stars residing therein; (2) the spatial structure of the old Galactic bulge through photometric observations of RR Lyrae-type stars; (3) the three\--dimensional structure, stellar density, mass, chemical composition, and age of the Milky Way bulge as traced by its old stellar populations; (4) an overview of RR Lyrae stars known in the ultra-faint dwarfs and their relation to the Galactic halo; and (5) different approaches for estimating absolute and relative cluster ages., Review article, 80 pages (25 figures); Space Science Reviews, in press (chapter of a special collection resulting from the May 2016 ISSI-BJ workshop on Astronomical Distance Determination in the Space Age)

In the framework of the STREGA (STRucture and Evolution of the GAlaxy) survey, two fields around the globular cluster Pal 12 were observed with the aim of detecting the possible presence of streams and/or an extended halo. The adopted stellar tracers are the Main Sequence, Turn-off and Red Giant Branch stars. We discuss the lumi- nosity function and the star counts in the observed region covering about 2 tidal radii, confirming that Pal 12 appears to be embedded in the Sagittarius Stream. Adopting an original approach to separate cluster and field stars, we do not find any evidence of sig- nificant extra-tidal Pal 12 stellar populations. The presence of the Sagittarius stream seems to have mimicked a larger tidal radius in previous studies. Photometric and spectroscopic observations of the Carina dSph revealed that this galaxy contains two dominant stellar populations of different age and kinematics. The co-existence of multiple populations provides new constraints on the dark halo structure of the galaxy, because different populations should be in equilibrium in the same dark matter potential well. We develop non-spherical dynamical models including such multiple stellar components and attempt to constrain the properties of the non-spherical dark halo of Carina. We find that Carina probably has a larger and denser dark halo than found in previous works and a less cuspy inner dark matter density profile, even though the uncertainties of dark halo parameters are still large due to small volume of data sample. Using our fitting results, we evaluate astrophysical factors for dark matter annihilation and decay and find that Carina should be one of the most promising detectable targets among classical dSph galaxies. We also calculate stellar velocity anisotropy profiles for both stellar populations and find that they are both radially anisotropic in the inner regions, while in the outer regions the older population becomes more tangentially biased than the intermediate one. This is consistent with the anisotropy predicted from tidal effects on the dynamical structure of a satellite galaxy and thereby can be considered as kinematic evidence for the tidal evolution of Carina., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures and 3 tables. The formal division of the distance indicators into primary and secondary leads to difficulties in description of methods which can actually be used in two ways: with, and without the support of the other methods for scaling. Thus instead of concentrating on the scaling requirement we concentrate on all methods of distance determination to extragalactic sources which are designated, at least formally, to use for individual sources. Among those, the Supernovae Ia is clearly the leader due to its enormous success in determination of the expansion rate of the Universe. However, new methods are rapidly developing, and there is also a progress in more traditional methods. We give a general overview of the methods but we mostly concentrate on the most recent developments in each field, and future expectations., Space Science Rewiev (in press)

SN 2012ec is a Type IIP supernova (SN) with a progenitor detection and comprehensive photospheric-phase observational coverage. Here, we present Very Large Telescope and PESSTO observations of this SN in the nebular phase. We model the nebular [O I] 6300, 6364 lines and find their strength to suggest a progenitor main-sequence mass of 13-15 Msun. SN 2012ec is unique among hydrogen-rich SNe in showing a distinct and unblended line of stable nickel [Ni II] 7378. This line is produced by 58Ni, a nuclear burning ash whose abundance is a sensitive tracer of explosive burning conditions. Using spectral synthesis modelling, we use the relative strengths of [Ni II] 7378 and [Fe II] 7155 (the progenitor of which is 56Ni) to derive a Ni/Fe production ratio of 0.20pm0.07 (by mass), which is a factor 3.4pm1.2 times the solar value. High production of stable nickel is confirmed by a strong [Ni II] 1.939 micron line. This is the third reported case of a core-collapse supernova producing a Ni/Fe ratio far above the solar value, which has implications for core-collapse explosion theory and galactic chemical evolution models., Published version

We present the photometric and spectroscopic evolution of the type Ic supernova LSQ14efd, discovered by the La Silla QUEST survey and followed by PESSTO. LSQ14efd was discovered few days after explosion and the observations cover up to ~100 days. The early photometric points show the signature of the cooling of the shock break-out event experienced by the progenitor at the time of the supernova explosion, one of the first for a type Ic supernova. A comparison with type Ic supernova spectra shows that LSQ14efd is quite similar to the type Ic SN 2004aw. These two supernovae have kinetic energies that are intermediate between standard Ic explosions and those which are the most energetic explosions known (e.g. SN 1998bw). We computed an analytical model for the light-curve peak and estimated the mass of the ejecta 6.3 +/- 0.5 Msun, a synthesized nickel mass of 0.25 Msun and a kinetic energy of Ekin = 5.6 +/- 0.5 x 10^51 erg. No connection between LSQ14efd and a GRB event could be established. However we point out that the supernova shows some spectroscopic similarities with the peculiar SN-Ia 1999ac and the SN-Iax SN 2008A. Multi-wavelength CCD photometry over 21 years has been used to produce deep color-magnitude diagrams together with light curves for the variables in the Galactic globular cluster NGC 5824. Twenty-one new cluster RR Lyrae stars are identified, bringing the total to 47, of which 42 have reliable periods determined for the first time. The color-magnitude diagram is matched using BaSTI isochrones with age of $13$~Gyr. and reddening is found to be $E(B-V) = 0.15 \pm0.02$; using the period-Wesenheit relation in two colors the distance modulus is $(m-M)_0=17.45 \pm 0.07$ corresponding to a distance of 30.9 Kpc. The observations show no signs of populations that are significantly younger than the $13$~Gyr stars. The width of the red giant branch does not allow for a spread in [Fe/H] greater than $\sigma = 0.05$ dex, and there is no photometric evidence for widened or parallel sequences. The $V, c_{UBI}$ pseudo-color magnitude diagram shows a bifurcation of the red giant branch that by analogy with other clusters is interpreted as being due to differing spectral signatures of the first (75\%) and second (25\%) generations of stars whose age difference is close enough that main sequence turnoffs in the color-magnitude diagram are unresolved. The cluster main sequence is visible against the background out to a radial distance of $\sim17$ arcmin. We conclude that NGC 5824 appears to be a classical Oosterhoff Type II globular cluster, without overt signs of being a remnant of a now-disrupted dwarf galaxy., Comment: 26 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

For the first time accurate pulsation properties of the ancient variable stars of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) are discussed in the broad context of galaxy formation and evolution. Homogeneous multi-band $BVI$ optical photometry of spanning {\it twenty} years has allowed us to identify and characterize more than 1400 RR Lyrae stars (RRLs) in this galaxy. Roughly 70\% are new discoveries. We investigate the period-amplitude distribution and find that Fornax shows a lack of High Amplitude (A$_V\gsim$0.75 mag) Short Period fundamental-mode RRLs (P$\lsim$0.48 d, HASPs). These objects occur in stellar populations more metal-rich than [Fe/H]$\sim$-1.5 and they are common in the Galactic halo (Halo) and in globulars. This evidence suggests that old (age older than 10 Gyr) Fornax stars are relatively metal-poor. A detailed statistical analysis of the role of the present-day Fornax dSph in reproducing the Halo period distribution shows that it can account for only a few to 20\% of the Halo when combined with RRLs in massive dwarf galaxies (Sagittarius dSph, Large Magellanic Cloud). This finding indicates that Fornax-like systems played a minor role in building up the Halo when compared with massive dwarfs. We also discuss the occurrence of HASPs in connection with the luminosity and the early chemical composition of nearby dwarf galaxies. We find that, independently of their individual star formation histories, bright (M$_V\lsim$-13.5 mag) galaxies have HASPs, whereas faint ones (M$_V\gsim$-11 mag) do not.
