Neutron-based experimental techniques have been continuously improved, refined and strengthened since the pioneering experiments conducted by Clifford Shull and Bertram Brockhouse in the mid twentieth century. The possibility to reveal structure and dynamics at different scales of distances and times, provided a deep insight into the microscopic nature of condensed matter systems. The advent of scattering techniques, firmly linked to instrument development (diffractometers, spectrometers), made neutron science attractive for scientists working in different fields, such as physics, biology, chemistry and engineering. Together with the development of intense sources and sophisticated instruments, the role of neutron detection techniques is instrumental for an effective use of the intense fluxes of neutron beams that became available in the last three decades. Detectors are then essential for the development of new and effective instrumentation that in turn can trigger new ideas for science. Neutrons made available at large scale facilities extend from ultra-cold to fast neutrons. Sources providing monochromatic fast neutron beams, such as DD or DT sources (also in the form of portable devices) are used for many applications, including at industrial level. Thus, the unique properties of neutrons in terms of their interaction with matter are related to the extended range of energies or (equivalently) wavelengths over which they can be produced at both compact and/or large scales facilities. The scope of this review is, starting from the main physical mechanism for neutron detection, to provide a survey on well assessed and newly developed neutron detection systems using both passive and active methods and their applications. It will provide an overview of the current state of neutron detection by describing different approaches and pointing out open problems to be faced.

Coastal lagoons are important but sensitive environments, being transitional zones between land and sea. The Khnifiss lagoon is the most important desert wetland in Morocco, but little data have been produced concerning heavy metal geochemistry and enrichments in the sediments. Therefore, 26 surface sediments (15 intertidal and 11 subtidal) and 2 sediment cores were collected in 2016 and analyzed for a selection of heavy metals. The data were processed to assess the degree of contamination and the corresponding potential ecological risk, using several accumulation/enrichment indices, and the singular and multi-metal risk indices. Mean concentrations in the bottom layers of the two cores, dating from a pre-industrial age according to geochronological analysis, were used as the local geochemical background. The resulting values were on the whole lower than those reported for other areas of the northeastern coast of Morocco. Multivariate statistics were also applied to better understand relationships among variables (metals and other geochemical parameters) and to reveal similarities among sample groups. The results showed that, although the lagoon is not yet affected by significant anthropogenic influences, small enrichments can be recognized, especially for Ni and Cd. The cause may be related to the proximity to the main national highway, the vehicles and machinery used in the saltworks located in the area, and the small harbors used principally for fishing. In addition, industrial emissions from the Atlantic coast of Morocco and adjacent countries can be reasonably attributed as additional contributors to the enrichments. In terms of potential ecological risk, Cd shows the greatest impact compared to the other metals investigated.

The role of nuclear data for neutronics analyses of Fusion Technology (FT) facilities is presented in this paper. Nuclear data evaluations of high quality are required for transport simulations, uncertainty assessments, activation and radiation damage calculations affecting the design and performance of the FT facilities, as well as safety, licensing, waste management and decommissioning issues. A corresponding programme on the nuclear data development (NDD) and qualification is conducted within the Power Plant Physics and Technology (PPPT) programme of EUROfusion supporting the development of the DEMO fusion power plant and the IFMIF-DONES neutron source. The programme builds on the achievements of pre-ceding NDD activities within the European fusion programme as addressed in the paper. Further needs for design, shielding, activation and radiation dose calculations are discussed, and recommendations are given to further improve and qualify the nuclear data base for PPPT nuclear analyses. This includes dedicated experimental activities tailored to the needs of DEMO and IFMIF-DONES.

The validation of calculation tools used for the nuclear design and analysis of future fusion machines requires the availability of nuclear instrumentation able to measure the nuclear quantities of interest in the harsh environments typical of tokamaks (e.g. ITER) characterized by high radiation level and high temperature. This instrumentation needs to be developed and properly tested under reactor-relevant working conditions. In the EU the activities to develop advanced nuclear detectors for the ITER-TBM are coordinated and supported by F4E and carried out under a collaborative effort between ENEA and KIT performed under the European Consortium on “Nuclear Data and Experimental Techniques”. In this paper the activities carried out at ENEA Frascati to develop nuclear sensors (diamond and self-powered detectors) able to operate “in-core” under the harsh working conditions of the ITER-TBM are discussed. Furthermore, the performance of diamond detectors operated at T >300 °C, as well as the performance of a self-power neutron detector (SPND) made with Cr emitter are presented. The open issues and the technological challenges to be faced to further develop the detectors are also addressed.

We compare existing experimental decay heat data sets measured at the JAEA fusion neutron source (FNS), which employed a fast extraction rabbit system that in certain cases allowed the measurements to capture, at short cooling times, the decay profile of 16N in a range of oxides. Focussing on those data points and timescales that can be attributed to 16N, we compare measurements to simulations performed using the FISPACT-II inventory code together with evaluated nuclear data libraries. Making small corrections for other contributions at these short times, we derive integral cross section data estimates for 16O(n,p)16N from 12 oxide sample measurements and compare with previously obtained measurements in the IAEA EXFOR database and evaluations in the nuclear data libraries themselves.

The joint evaluated fission and fusion nuclear data library 3.3 is described. New evaluations for neutron-induced interactions with the major actinides U , U and Pu , on Am and Na , Ni , Cr, Cu, Zr, Cd, Hf, W, Au, Pb and Bi are presented. It includes new fission yields, prompt fission neutron spectra and average number of neutrons per fission. In addition, new data for radioactive decay, thermal neutron scattering, gamma-ray emission, neutron activation, delayed neutrons and displacement damage are presented. JEFF-3.3 was complemented by files from the TENDL project. The libraries for photon, proton, deuteron, triton, helion and alpha-particle induced reactions are from TENDL-2017. The demands for uncertainty quantification in modeling led to many new covariance data for the evaluations. A comparison between results from model calculations using the JEFF-3.3 library and those from benchmark experiments for criticality, delayed neutron yields, shielding and decay heat, reveals that JEFF-3.3 performes very well for a wide range of nuclear technology applications, in particular nuclear energy., Acknowledgements The authors would like to thank all contributors to the JEFF project that shared their insights and provided their specific input for the present JEFF-3.3 evaluation and its immediate predecessors JEFF-3.2 and JEFF-3.1.2.

The nuclear heat loads due to gamma rays emitted from the decay of 16N and delayed neutrons from17N, generated by the activation of water in cooling circuits, are critical for ITER design. The assessment of nuclear heating from activated water is complex; it requires temporal and spatial dependent transport and activation calculations taking into account variation of irradiation, water flow conditions and cooling circuits’ parameters. A water activation experiment has been recently conducted at the14 MeV Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) in order to validate the methodology for water activation assessment used for ITER and to reduce the safety factors applied to the calculation results, which have a large impact on the schedule, commissioning and licensing. Water circulating inside an ITER First Wall (FW) mock-up was irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons and then measured using a large CsI scintillator detector. The system consists of a closed water loop where the cooling water, transiting through an ITER FW mock-up, is irradiated by FNG. The induced 16N activity via 14 MeV neutrons interactions with 16O via the 16O(n,p)16N reaction is measured in a dedicated counting station via an expansion volume. The water then passes to a much larger holding delay tank, and after several 16N half-lives decay time, it is then recirculated and exposed again to neutrons in the ITER First Wall (FW) mock-up. The measured 16N activity is obtained measuring the emitted characteristic 6.13 and 7.12 MeV gamma-rays. Calculations were performed in an accurate model of the FW mock-up using the MCNP Monte Carlo code and FENDL-3.1 nuclear data library to obtain the predicted flux impinging on the water. The EASY-2007 inventory code was used to predict the 16N activity. In this work, a comparison between measurements and calculations is reported together with associated uncertainty analysis.

The Water Cooled Lithium Lead (WCLL) is one of the breeding blanket (BB) concept candidate for the future European Demonstration Fusion Power Reactor (DEMO). In the frame of the EUROfusion Consortium, a WCLL BB mock-up neutronics experiment will be performed at the 14 MeV Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) irradiation facility, devoted to the validation of the Tritium Breeding Ratio (TBR) and the shielding capability predicted by neutronics design calculations. It will include the assessment of the uncertainties on the calculated Tritium Production Rate (TPR) and the neutron/gamma attenuation which will be useful to evaluate design margins required to guarantee tritium self-sufficiency. In preparation of the future experiment, a detailed pre-analysis has been performed with the MCNP Monte Carlo code for the definition of the mock-up assembly and for the optimisation of the experimental setup. The WCLL mock-up has been designed in such a way that the essential nuclear features of the WCLL BB in DEMO can be represented in the experiment and the relevant nuclear quantities can be measurable with sufficient accuracy under FNG irradiation conditions, with several experimental techniques. This study reports the results of the pre-analysis: the optimised experimental layout and its representativeness of WCLL DEMO blanket.

Water activated by 14 MeV neutrons emits both high energy gammas from 16N and delayed neutrons from 17N. The isotopes 16,17N are produced through the 16O(n,p)16N (T1/2 = 7.13 s) and 17O(n,p)17N (T1/2 = 4.1 s) reactions, respectively. These sources of radiation represent one of the main issues for ITER having large impact on the design of the machine and on the qualification of components. To validate the calculation methodology used for ITER and to reduce the safety factors applied to the calculation results a water activation experiment was commissioned by F4E to ENEA and performed at the 14 MeV Frascati neutron generator (FNG). The experimental set-up consisted of a closed water loop, about 40 m long, where the cooling water, while transiting through an ITER FW mock-up, was irradiated by the D-T neutrons produced at FNG. 6.73 MeV gamma-rays from 16N and delayed (fast) neutrons from 17N were measured using a large CsI gamma-ray detector and an array of absolutely calibrated 3He detectors, respectively. This paper reports on the measurements of the delayed neutrons emission from 17N. The calibration of the 3He detector array and the experimental set-up are first discussed. Then the experimental results (E) for the delayed neutrons as well as the comparison with the calculation (C) performed using the MCNP Monte Carlo code (coupled to the FENDL3.1 data library) and the EASY-2007 inventory code are presented. The C/E ratio results close to unity, however it is affected by a very large error (> ±60 %) to be ascribed mainly to the uncertainty on the nuclear data used for calculation.

Single Crystal Diamonds (sCD) have been selected as neutron detectors for the ITER Radial Neutron Camera (RNC). This paper investigates experimentally the hardness of these detectors to 14 MeV neutrons in order to have indications of their limits of applicability in the RNC. The experiment has been performed at the Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) facility using three sCDs of different thickness ( 500 , 300 , 100 μ m ). The degradation of the sCD Charge Collection Efficiency (CCE) with increasing 14 MeV neutron fluence has been found to be lower with decreasing sCD thickness. Strong polarization effects produced by the trapping of charge carriers in the defects produced by the neutron irradiation are observed already at about 4 ⋅ 1 0 14 n ∕ cm 2 in the 100 μ m thick sCD. A software correction of the polarization effect is proposed, which enables to extend the sCD range of operation up to higher fluences. Taking into account such correction, a 50 μ m thick sCD is expected to reach 1 0 15 n ∕ cm 2 with a CCE greater than 0.7.

A neutronics benchmark experiment on a pure Copper block (dimensions 60 × 70 × 60 cm3), aimed at testing and validating the recent nuclear data libraries for fusion applications, was performed at the 14-MeV Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) as part of a F4E specific grant (F4E_FPA-395_01) assigned to the European Consortium on Nuclear Data and Experimental Techniques. The relevant neutronics quantities (e.g., reaction rates, neutron flux spectra, doses, etc.) were measured using different experimental techniques and the results were compared to the calculated quantities using fusion relevant nuclear data libraries. This paper focuses on the analyses carried-out by ENEA through the activation foils techniques. 197Au(n,γ)198Au, 186W(n,γ)187W, 115In(n,n′)115In, 58Ni(n,p)58Co, 27Al(n,α)24Na, 93Nb(n,2n)92Nbm activation reactions were used. The foils were placed at eight different positions along the Cu block and irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons. Activation measurements were performed by means of High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. Detailed simulation of the experiment was carried-out using MCNP5 Monte Carlo code and the European JEFF-3.1.1 and 3.2 nuclear cross-sections data files for neutron transport and IRDFF_v1.05 library for the reaction rates in activation foils. The calculated reaction rates (C) were compared to the experimental quantities (E) and the C/E ratio with relative uncertainties was assessed.

One relevant experiment selected for the DT phase at JET is the irradiation of the HCPB-TBM mock-up of ITER which will be located in front of the horizontal port of Octant-8. The neutronics performances of the HCPB-TBM will be studied through independent measurement techniques and the experimental quantities compared to the results of Monte Carlo simulation. Of paramount importance is the measurement of the tritium production rate (TPR) to be performed by using a single crystal diamond detector covered with a thin layer of 6LiF (LiDia detector). This requires the knowledge of the 6Li mass. In this work the 6Li mass calibration of the selected LiDia detector was first performed in a well characterized thermal neutron flux spectrum. Furthermore, a performance test of the detector was carried out by locating it inside a polyethylene phantom irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons at the Frascati Neutron generator. The experimental set-up was accurately simulated by using the MCNP5 code and the TPR compared to the measured one. The goal was to point out and assess the issues with the measurement method.

In this work we present the response of a new large volume 4H Silicon Carbide (SiC) detector to 14 MeV neutrons. The device has an active thickness of 100 μ m (obtained by epitaxial growing) and an active area of 25 mm2. Tests were conducted at the ENEA-Frascati Neutron Generator facility by using 14.1 MeV neutrons. The SiC detector performance was compared to that of Single-Crystal Diamond (SCD) detectors. The SiC response function was successfully measured and revealed a very complex structure due to the presence in the detector of both Silicon and Carbon atoms. Nevertheless, the flexibility in the SiC manufacturing and the new achievements in terms of relatively large areas (up 1x1 cm2) and a wide range of thicknesses makes them an interesting alternative to diamond detectors in environments where limited space and high neutron fluxes are an issue, i.e. modern neutron cameras or in-vessel tokamak measurements for the new generation fusion machines such as ITER. The absence of instabilities during neutron irradiation and the capability to withstand high neutron fluences and to follow the neutron yield suggest a straightforward use of these detectors as a neutron diagnostics.

Water activated by fast neutrons emits both high energy gammas from 16N and delayed neutrons from 17N. The radioisotopes 16,17 N are produced through the 16O(n,p)16N and 17O(n,p)17N reactions (thresholds about 10 MeV) and decay through the reactions 16N ( T 1∕2 = 7 . 13 ± 2 s) → 16 O + γ (67% @ 6.13 MeV, 5% @ 7.12 MeV) and 17N ( T 1∕2 = 4 . 173 ± 4 s) → 17 O → 16 O + n (37.7% @ 0.386 MeV, 0.6% @ 0.886 MeV, 49.8% @ 1.16 MeV, 6.9% @ 1.69 MeV), γ (3.7% @ 0.87 MeV), respectively. Activated water, flowing throughout a nuclear plant distributes the radioactivity to many critical components where personnel and/or instrumentation can be located thus depositing additional radiation dose which requires a proper shielding. This source of radiation represents an issue for a D-T fusion device like ITER which uses water as the main cooling fluid for components such as e.g. first wall and divertor. Owing to the scarce experimental information available for the cross sections of the 16O(n,p)16N and 17O(n,p)17N reactions and few benchmark validations, large uncertainties are affecting the calculations of the water activation induced by DT neutrons in a tokamak. In the attempt to improve the available nuclear data Fusion for Energy (F4E) tasked ENEA to carry on a benchmark experiment to validate the water activation calculations presently performed for ITER. This benchmark experiment was carried out in the year 2019 irradiating with the 14 MeV neutrons produced by the Frascati Neutron generator (FNG) a small size ITER First Wall mock-up. Demineralized water was circulating inside the mock-up and downstream of the irradiation zone the 16N gamma-rays decay and the 17N neutrons decay were measured using proper detectors. The experiment was simulated using the MCNP and the FISPACT codes. The obtained C/E values are in a range close to unit for both 16,17 N isotopes. However, due to the large uncertainty on the 16O(n,p)16N and 17O(n,p)17N reactions cross-sections, for some of the used cross-section data base, e.g. ENDF/B-VIII.0, the C/E is affected by large uncertainty. This is especially true for the case of 17N which production cross-section is affected by ± 60% uncertainty. In the attempt to measure and validate the cross-section data for 16,17 N production, the water activation experiment was repeated at FNG so to measure directly the 16,17 O(n,p) 16,17 N reaction cross-sections at almost monochromatic energies. The results of this new experiment are presented in this paper and compared to the data currently used by ITER project for calculating the water activation.

The Time Projection method is ideal to track low kinetic energy charged particles, in particular for the study for Dark Matter interactions. With this technique we aim to readout large volumes with a moderate number of channels providing a complete 3D reconstruction of the tracks within the sensitive region. The total released energy and the energy density along the tracks can be both measured allowing for particle identification and to solve the head–tail ambiguity of the track. Moreover, in gas, nuclear recoils induced by a Dark Matter particle scattering can yield tracks long enough for its direction to be inferred. We describe here a prototype TPC with a GEM amplification stage. The readout is based on the detection of the light produced in the GEM with a high granularity sCMOS sensor in conjunction with a photomultiplier. The prototype was exposed to γ and neutron source and to minimum ionizing particles, obtaining very promising results in terms of detection efficiency, energy resolution and particle identification.

For many years artificial diamond detectors have been studied for application in high temperature environments. An open question is whether the performance of such detectors is influenced by the electrical contacts. In the attempt to better understand this point, a systematic study of electrical contacts deposited with different techniques and materials on top of commercial artificial single crystal diamond (SCD) films was performed. In this paper we report on the results obtained using three types of electric contacts produced both using metal and not metal layers: a) double Schottky, b) double ohmic; c) Schottky-ohmic contacts. The detectors were studied under 14 MeV neutron irradiation, and were operated in pulse mode. The pulse height spectra (PHS) produced by the 14 MeV neutrons were recorded as a function of temperature and the detector behaviour was studied by analysing the variation of the peak produced in the PHS by the 12C(n,α)9Be reaction induced by 14 MeV neutrons in carbon. The maximum operational temperature limit of the tested detectors was found to be around 230ˆC and it resulted to be slightly dependent, within ±10ˆC, upon the type of the electrical contact. It turned out that, together with the type of the electrical contact, other parameters such as the intrinsic diamond properties and the film thickness have to be considered to understand the response of the detector at high temperature.

The first measurements of the response of diamond detectors to neutrons in the energy range 17–34 MeV are presented. The diamond detectors were irradiated with quasi-monoenergetic neutrons generated through the 7 Li(p,n) 7 Be reaction. The measured pulse-height spectra show specific peaks associated to neutron induced reactions in carbon. The peak of the 12C(n, α 0 )9Be was clearly separated from the rest of the spectra. The 12C(n,d 0 )11B and 12C(n,p 0 )12B peaks were clearly identified on a continuum originating from the breakup 12C(n,3 α ) reaction, which dominates the low-energy part of the pulse-height spectra. The 12C(n, α 0 ) 9 Be, 12C(n,d 0 )11B and 12C(n,p 0 )12B cross sections that have never been measured in this high-energy range before were determined. The measured data are compared with the European Activation File EAF-2010 library evaluated values.

In the last years there has been an increasing interest in diamond detectors working in harsh environments characterized by high temperature and intense gamma and neutron fluxes. In this work the operational performances of an artificial single crystal CVD diamond detector operating in current mode at high temperature (HT) are investigated. The detector leakage current was first characterized versus the temperature and the biasing voltage (HV), then the detector was exposed to intense 60 Co gamma-ray fluxes, and its response in terms of “normalized current” (here defined as measured current minus leakage current normalized to gamma dose-rate or gamma flux) as well as its time dependent behavior were studied at temperatures ranging from 300 K (room temperature) up to 625 K. The detector response resulted linear to HV and dose-rate up to about 600 K. At higher temperatures, saturation of the measured net current as well as polarization effects were observed. An attempt to give an heuristic explanation of some of the observed phenomena is addressed too.

The increasing demand for environmental pollution control results in the development and use of new procedures for the determination of dangerous chemicals. Simple screening methods, which can be used directly in the field for a preliminary assessment of soil contamination, seem to be extremely advantageous. In our laboratory, we developed and optimized a rapid test for a preliminary evaluation of both the concentration and the mobility of some potentially toxic metals in soils. This screening test consists of a single extraction of the soil sample with a buffer solution, followed by the titration of the extracted solution with dithizone to determine the contents of bi-valent heavy metals (such as Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd). This screening method was then directly applied in the field during the sampling campaign in the framework of an Italian–Serbian collaborative project, finalized in the study of metal availability in soils. The results obtained in the field with the rapid test were compared with those obtained in the laboratory following the conventional procedure commonly used to evaluate metal bioavailability (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic extraction). Moreover, selected samples were analyzed sequentially in the laboratory using the standardized BCR three-step sequential extraction procedure. The screening test gave results conceptually in good agreement with those obtained via the BCR procedure. These preliminary data show that the proposed screening test is a reliable method for the preliminary rapid evaluation of metal total concentrations and of potential metal mobility in soils, supporting sampling activities directly in the field. © 2017, Springer International Publishing AG.

The challenge for any nuclear data evaluation project is to periodically release a revised, fully consistent and complete library, with all needed data and covariances, and ensure that it is robust and reliable for a variety of applications. Within an evaluation effort, benchmarking activities play an important role in validating proposed libraries. The Joint Evaluated Fission and Fusion (JEFF) Project aims to provide such a nuclear data library, and thus, requires a coherent and efficient benchmarking process. The aim of this paper is to present the activities carried out by the new JEFF Benchmarking and Validation Working Group, and to describe the role of the NEA Data Bank in this context. The paper will also review the status of preliminary benchmarking for the next JEFF-3.3 candidate cross-section files. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.

The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. The 14 MeV Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG), designed and built at the ENEA Frascati research center, is a highly versatile active source of fast neutrons for research activities. Neutron generation at the FNG is based on the T(d,n)α fusion reaction, to produce 14 MeV neutrons with a flux up to 1×1011 neutrons/s in steady state or pulse mode. FNG can also produce 2.5 MeV neutrons via the D(d,n)3He fusion reaction.

An innovative diamond detector layout is presented that is designed to operate at high temperature under intense neutron and gamma fluxes. It is made of a 500 μm "electronic grade" diamond film with 100 nm thick Ag metal contacts deposited onto each surface of the film by means of thermal evaporation. A 2μm thick layer of 6LiF has been deposited on top of one of the two Ag contacts to make the detector sensitive to thermal neutrons. The device was tested at the ISIS spallation neutron source (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK) using the INES beam line. The detector was continuously irradiated for 100 hours in vacuum (p = 10-5 mbar), exposed to a neutron flux of about 106 n cm-2 s-1 at a temperature T = 150°C. The aim of this experiment was to study the time dependence of the diamond detector performance while operating at high temperature under irradiation, providing a first experimental proof of reliable continuous operation for 100 hours at high temperature in a harsh environment. The importance of the design for the realization of an intense 14 MeV neutron facility devoted to test and validate materials su itable for harsh neutron environments, such as a fusion reactor, is well established. The "New Sorgentina" Fusion Source (NSFS) is a project that proposes an intense D-T 14 MeV neutron source achievable with T and D ion beams impinging on 2 m radius rotating targets. NSFS may produce about 10 15 n/s at the target and has to be intended as an European facility that maybe realized in a few years, once provided a preliminary technological program devoted to the operation of the ion source in continuous mode, target heat loading/removal, target and tritium handling, inventor as well as site licensing. In this contribution, the main characteristics of NSFS project will be presented and its possible use as a multipurpose facility outlined.

Field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated on hydrogen-terminated diamond surface have been heavily irradiated with 14.8-MeV neutrons in order to evaluate their possible application in very high neutron fluence environments. The dc performance of the diamond-based FETs, such as drain saturation current and maximum transconductance, has been studied as a function of a 14.8-MeV neutron fluence up to 1014 n/cm2, delivered in five steps. The effects on electrical properties of H-terminated diamond surface have also been investigated during the neutron irradiation experiments. The Hall parameters, i.e., sheet hole concentration, hole mobility, and sheet resistance, were monitored before and after each irradiation. The performance remains stable during all the neutron fluence steps, thus assessing a remarkable radiation hardness of diamond-based devices. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published data on 14-MeV neutron tolerance of diamond FET devices. © 2016 IEEE.

In view of the establishment of quality standards for uranium in drinking water by the European and Italian authorities, we report a comprehensive overview of the Italian situation regarding uranium concentrations in natural waters. More than 3100 data on waters all over Italy are reviewed in addition to new data for Latium Region (Central Italy) where relatively high concentrations in rocks are long been known. Our study evidences that uranium in bedrock is not the main factor ruling uranium presence in fresh and groundwater, indicating that redox conditions as well as bicarbonates and silicates control solution equilibria and accordingly the uranium content in waters. At present, and considering the provisional guideline value of 30 μg/L established by [WHO (2012) Guidelines for Drinking-Water Quality. World Health Organization, Geneva], no critical situation is envisaged in Italy, but this can be overruled if lower limits will be actually imposed. There is also a need of further studies on uranium speciation in water and of wider epidemiological studies to assess its real toxicity to overcome the uncertainties that have so far hampered the definition of reliable water quality standards. © 2015, Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei.

In the present paper, the performances of single crystal diamond detectors "ad hoc" designed to operate at high temperature are reported. The detectors were realized using commercial CVD single crystal diamond films, 500 micron thick with metal contacts deposited by sputtering method on each side. The new detector layout is based upon mechanical contacts between the diamond film and the electric ground. The detector was first characterized by measuring the leakage current as function of temperature and applied biasing voltage (I-V characteristics). The results obtained using two different metal contacts, Pt and Ag respectively, while irradiated with 14 MeV neutrons at the Frascati neutron generator (FNG) are reported and compared. It is shown that diamond detectors with Ag metal contacts can be properly operated in spectrometric mode up to 240°C with energy resolution (FWHM) of about 3.5%. © 2016 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

A Mock-up of the inboard shield of the ITER International nuclear fusion reactor was realized at the Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) at ENEA Frascati with the scope to measure the nuclear heating (total dose) in the superconducting coils. High sensitivity MCP-6 and MCP-7 dosimeters were used to measure the low (

Concentrations of rare earth elements (REE), Y, Th and Sc were recently determined in marine sediments collected using a box corer along two onshore–offshore transects located in the Strait of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea). The REE + Y were enriched in offshore fine-grained sediments where clay minerals are abundant, whereas the REE + Y contents were lower in onshore coarse-grained sediments with high carbonate fractions. Considering this distribution trend, the onshore sediments in front of the southwestern Sicilian coast represent an anomaly with high REE + Y concentrations (mean value 163.4 lg g 1) associated to high Th concentrations (mean value 7.9 lg g 1). Plot of shale-normalized REE + Y data of these coastal sediments showed Middle REE enrichments relative to Light REE and Heavy REE, manifested by a convexity around Sm–Gd–Eu elements. These anomalies in the fractionation patterns of the coastal sediments were attributed to phosphogypsum-contaminated effluents from an industrial plant, located in the southern Sicilian coast.

The Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) started operations in November 1992 making available to EU fusion community 14 MeV neutrons at an emission rate of 1011 s-1. The fusion community strongly supported the idea of international collaboration in neutronics experiments, data base and code improvement, development of (new) experimental techniques and detectors. FNG was designed and built in ENEA that also operates the machine at its own expenses. FNG is extensively used to perform benchmarks or mock-up experiments of interest to Fusion neutronics in turn validating nuclear data and codes. A number of activities in different fields within a series of collaborations are carried out at FNG so far.

Arsenic occurrence in groundwater near the Cimino-Vico volcanoes (central Italy) was analysed considering the hydrostratigraphy and structural setting and the shallow and deep flows interacting within the Quaternary volcanics. Groundwater is the local source of drinking water. As documented in the past, arsenic in the groundwater has become a problem, and the European maximum allowable contaminant level was recently lowered to 10 μg/L. Chemical analyses of groundwater were conducted, sampled over an area of about 900 km2, from 65 wells and springs representative of the volcanic aquifer and thermal waters. Considering the type of aquifer, the nature of the aquifer formation and its substratum, the hydrochemical data highlight that the arsenic content of the groundwater is mainly connected with the hydrothermal processes in the volcanic area. Thermal waters (54–60°C) fed from deep-rising fluids show higher arsenic concentrations (176–371 μg/L). Cold waters sampled from the volcanic aquifer are characterized by a wide variability in their arsenic concentration (1.6–195 μg/L), and about 62% exceed the limit of 10 μg/L. Where the shallow volcanic aquifer is open to deep-rising thermal fluids, relatively high arsenic concentrations (20–100 μg/L) are found. This occurs close to areas of the more recent volcano-tectonic structures.

The Palermo and Augusta urban/industrial areas (Sicily) are examples of contaminated coastal environments with a relatively high influx of unregulated industrial and domestic effluents. Three sediment box-cores were collected offshore of these urban/industrial areas in water depths of 60–150mduring two cruises (summers 2003/2004), dated by 210Pb and 137Cs, and analysed for total mercury concentration and total polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) concentration. Benthic foraminiferal assemblages were also examined (in terms of their distribution and morphology) to assess the potential use of benthic foraminifera as bioindicators of pollutant input and environmental change in these Mediterranean shelf environments. The Hg and PAHs vs depth profiles show a clear increase in concentration with decreasing depth. Most of the sediments are highly enriched in mercury and show concentrations more than 20 times the background mercury value estimated for sediments from the Sicily Strait. The Hg and PAH concentrations appear to be potentially hazardous, grossly exceeding national and international regulatory guidelines. A reduction in abundance of benthic foraminifera, increasing percentages of tests with various morphological deformities, and the dominance of opportunistic species in more recent sediments can be correlated to anthropogenic impact.

A neutronics experiment has been performed in the frame of European Fusion Technology Program on a mock-up of the EU Test Blanket Module (TBM), HCPB concept, with the objective to validate the capability of nuclear data to predict nuclear responses, such as the tritium production rate (TPR), with qualified uncertainties. In the experiment, the TPR has been measured using Li 2 CO 3 pellets located at various depths at two symmetrical positions at each depth, one in the upper and one in the lower breeder cassette. Three independent measurements were performed by ENEA, TUD/VKTA and JAEA. The neutron flux in the beryllium layer was measured as well using activation foils. The measured tritium production in the TBM ( E ) was compared with the same quantity ( C ) calculated by the MCNP-4C code using a very detailed model of the experimental set up. A sensitivity and uncertainty analysis has also been performed to evaluate the calculation uncertainty due to the uncertainty on neutron cross sections. The results of such analysis, carried out using both Monte Carlo and deterministic codes, shows that the uncertainty due to cross sections amounts to 4–5% (2 σ ). C / E ratios were obtained with a total uncertainty on the C / E comparison of 9–10% (2 σ ). The C / E comparison shows that the calculation of the tritium production is underestimated by about 10% in average and is within the combined 2 σ uncertainty margin of the measurements and the calculations. The obtained results indicate that design calculations of the tritium breeding ratio provide conservative results for the fusion reactor employing a HCPB type breeder blanket.

A neutronics experiment performed at the Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG) on a mock-up of the Helium-Cooled Pebble Bed (HCPB) breeder test blanket module (TBM) has been analysed on the basis of neutron transport, sensitivity and uncertainty calculations using both deterministic and probabilistic computational methods. The calculations revealed a slight but systematic underestimation of the measured tritium activities by 5 to 10% on average, independent of the nuclear data used that were taken from the EFF-3 and FENDL-2.0, -2.1 data files. The uncertainty assessments showed data related uncertainties of the calculated tritium production rates at a level of 4% (2σ confidence level). The beryllium cross-section data were shown to be the main source of these uncertainties. The total uncertainties of the tritium production prediction including the data uncertainties, the statistical uncertainties of the Monte Carlo calculation and the experimental uncertainties are in the order of 8 to 10% (2σ). The observed underestimation of the measured tritium production is at the lower bound of the assessed uncertainty margin. The obtained results indicate that design calculations for the tritium breeding ratio (TBR) of fusion power reactors employing a HCPB type breeder blanket are conservative. Thus, an additional TBR margin is provided which allows compensation for potential other uncertainties.

We present an overview of ongoing work on three types of neutron flux monitors under investigation and development for the two European ITER Test Blanket Modules: 1) a neutron activation system, 2) silicon carbide diodes, 3) self-powered neutron detectors for fast neutrons. A pneumatic test system for neutronics tests for a TBM-NAS was constructed at the DT neutron generator laboratory of Technical University of Dresden. Several irradiations have been performed with focus on the simultaneous measurement of the extracted activated probes. Furthermore, an engineering assessment in the conceptual design phase has been done which considered issues of design requirements and integration. Within the I-SMART project, KIT is investigating the suitability of an online detector based on silicon carbide semiconductor material and associated electronics for the TBMs. Detectors of several designs have been already irradiated with DT neutrons. Irradiation tests at elevated temperatures have been done and further tests are currently underway. Self-powered neutron detectors (SPND) with novel materials sensitive also to the fast neutron flux expected in the TBMs are under investigation. Simulations with the European Activation System EASY and neutron flux spectra which were calculated with MCNP for the HCPB TBM. Preliminary tests with commercial SPND in a fast reactor were performed. Test detectors are under preparation for testing with DT neutron generators. © 2015 IEEE.

A neutronics experiment has been launched in the European fusion technology program on a mock-up of a test blanket module with the objective to validate the capability of nuclear data to predict nuclear responses with qualified uncertainties. In the experiment, the mock-up will be irradiated with a 14-MeV neutron source and the tritium production rate will be measured and compared with the calculated value by neutron cross sections from the European Fusion File. Given the difficulty of performing a reliable measurement of tritium production rate in such experiments, an international benchmark comparison on tritium measurement techniques has been carried out in collaboration between ENEA, TUD/VKTA and also JAERI that has already performed such experiments. The main purpose of the comparison is to establish the reference technique of TPR measurements to be used later in the TBM experiment. Three steps of the comparison procedure are presented in the paper as well as the preliminary results. The implications for the TBM experiment are also discussed.

Some recent JET campaigns, with the introduction of a trace amount (nT/nD < 5%) of tritium into D plasmas and third harmonic ICRH acceleration of 4He, provided unique opportunities to test 'burning plasma' diagnostics. In particular, new approaches and techniques were investigated for the detection of neutrons, ? particles and the fuel mixture. With regard to neutron detection, the recent activity covered aspects such as calibration and cross validation of the diagnostics, measurement of the spatial distribution of the neutrons, particle transport and neutron spectrometry. The first tests of some newneutron detection technologies were also undertaken during the Trace Tritium Experiment campaign. To improve JET's diagnostic capability in the field of ? particles, a significant development programme was devoted to the measurement of their confinement and imaging with ? -ray spectroscopy. A new approach for the fusion community to measuring the fast ion losses, based on the activation technique, was also attempted for the first time on JET. An assessment of the neutral particle analyser's potential to determine the fuel mixture and the particle transport coefficients is under way.

The Laser-induced Breakdown Spectroscopy technique was applied on board the R/V Italica during the XVI Antarctic campaign (2000–2001) to carry out elemental chemical analysis of marine sediments collected using different sampling systems. To this end, a compact system has been built, which was suitable to operate also in the presence of mechanical vibrations, induced by the ship motion. Qualitative and quantitative analyses were performed on dried samples, without any further pre-treatment. Qualitative analyses have shown similar elemental composition among different collected sediments, except for significant differences in the case of rock fragments and manganese nodule. The latter also contains some heavy metals that in sediment layers were detected only in traces. The methodology to retrieve relative or absolute elemental concentration in heterogenous samples has been optimized and is scarcely sensitive to variations of sediment physical properties with depth, and to experimental parameters such as laser defocusing because of surface irregularities, and laser energy fluctuations. The relative distribution of the major elemental constituents, both from a bio-organic and mineral origin, was measured as a function of sediment depth. Measurements, once limited to specific spectral sections, and data analyses are fast and very reproducible. Most of the elements show a gradually varying distribution along the sampled core, except for silicon and barium, whose steep decrease with depth is strongly related to their biogenic origin. Quantitative LIBS analyses were performed on a limited number of samples and the results reported here, are comparable to the certified element contents in a reference sample of Antarctic sediments.

Measurements of C12 cross sections for the excited states (n,p0) up to (n,p4) and (n,d0), (n,d1) have been carried out. The Van de Graaff neutron generator of the EC-JRC-IRMM laboratory has been used for these measurements. A very thin tritiated target (263 μg/cm2) was employed with deuteron beams energies impinging on the target in the range 2.5-4.0 MeV. Neutrons in the range 18.9-20.7 MeV were produced with an intrinsic energy spread of 0.2-0.25% FWHM. With such narrow neutron energy spread, using a high energy resolution device such as a single crystal diamond detector, several peaks from the outgoing charged particles produced by the (n,pn), (n,dn) and also (n,α0) reactions appear in the pulse height spectrum. The peaks can be identified using the reaction Q-values. The diamond detector used for these measurements has shown an intrinsic energy resolution lower than 0.9% FWHM. The analysis of the peaks has permitted to derive the partial carbon reaction cross sections for several excited states. The results are presented in this paper with the associated uncertainties and they are compared with different versions of TENDL compilation when these data are available (e.g. versions 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2015) and also with experimental results available in the EXFOR database. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.

A neutronics benchmark experiment on a pure Copper block (dimensions 60 × 70 × 70 cm3) aimed at testing and validating the recent nuclear data libraries for fusion applications was performed in the frame of the European Fusion Program at the 14 MeV ENEA Frascati Neutron Generator (FNG). Reaction rates, neutron flux spectra and doses were measured using different experimental techniques (e.g. activation foils techniques, NE213 scintillator and thermoluminescent detectors). This paper first summarizes the analyses of the experiment carried-out using the MCNP5 Monte Carlo code and the European JEFF-3.2 library. Large discrepancies between calculation (C) and experiment (E) were found for the reaction rates both in the high and low neutron energy range. The analysis was complemented by sensitivity/uncertainty analyses (S/U) using the deterministic and Monte Carlo SUSD3D and MCSEN codes, respectively. The S/U analyses enabled to identify the cross sections and energy ranges which are mostly affecting the calculated responses. The largest discrepancy among the C/E values was observed for the thermal (capture) reactions indicating severe deficiencies in the 63,65Cu capture and elastic cross sections at lower rather than at high energy. Deterministic and MC codes produced similar results. The 14 MeV copper experiment and its analysis thus calls for a revision of the JEFF-3.2 copper cross section and covariance data evaluation. A new analysis of the experiment was performed with the MCNP5 code using the revised JEFF-3.3-T2 library released by NEA and a new, not yet distributed, revised JEFF-3.2 Cu evaluation produced by KIT. Throughout the human history, the anthropic activity inevitably leads to a legacy of increased PHE concentration in the environment. Nowadays the urban environment can be considered the main habitat for humans. Therefore, the acknowledgment and the understanding of the impact of PHEs in urban soils and dusts is imperative in order to develop a plan for the sustainable management of urban areas, which should limit this impact on human and environmental health. A historical background regarding urban soil contamination is presented, along with an overview of the PHEs and PGEs found in urban soils. As humans are daily exposed to PHEs present in air, water and soil, studies are focusing on their long-term effects and on the toxicological impact of PHE (PHEs’) combinations, rather that of single elements. The importance of a comprehensive assessment of PHEs in urban soils and dusts, including their bioavailability, is discussed.

The recognition of the potential health hazards associated with heavy metals has focused attention on the levels and behaviours of these elements both in natural and contaminated environments. Various soil types developed from different parent materials in Sicily, Italy, have been analysed in order to compare heavy metal distribution under different geopedological conditions. Total metal concentrations, metal partitioning and distribution profiles are discussed in relation to the inheritance factor and pedogenic processes. Parent material composition largely influences the contents of heavy metals in most of the analysed soils, mainly differentiating pedons for their metal concentration on the basis of sedimentary and volcanic parent materials. However, an exception is represented by the carbonate-free Alfisols and Mollisols, which are markedly enriched in heavy metals with respect to the underlying limestones and calcarenites. On the basis of chemical and mineralogical results, supported by data from sequential extraction (SEP), heavy metal enrichment in these soils is associated with the formation of common to abundant Fe–Mn oxides and clay accumulation. For Mollisols there is evidence for a major role of organic matter in heavy metal retention in surface horizons. In the other pedons, pedogenic processes appear to mainly influence the redistribution of heavy metals throughout the soil horizons rather than affecting the total content. Argillopedoturbation seems to be responsible for a uniform distribution of heavy metals in Vertisol profiles on marly clays. Accumulation of heavy metals in the topsoil of Inceptisols on clays with gypsum and Entisols on gypsarenites and diatomites is caused partially by adsorption on organic matter and mainly by dissolution of primary gypsum and opal-A. A pedogenic influence is less evident in young Andisols whose heavy metal composition greatly reflects that of hawaiitic pyroclastic deposits interbedded within the profiles. However, a certain redistribution of Cu accumulated as metal–organic matter complexes is evidenced in the surface horizon by SEP.

After the earthquakes of September 26, 1997, that hit the Umbria-Marcheboundary (Apennine, Central Italy), with a maximum 6.0 Mw, aprogram of geochemical surveying together with a collection ofhydrogeological changes episodes was extended throughout theepicentre-area, taking the yearly period of the seismic sequence as a whole.After a first areal screening, the Bagni di Triponzo thermal spring wasselected for a discrete temporal monitoring (weekly and monthly basis),being the unique thermal spring throughout the epicentre area. This sitedeserves peculiar interest in deepening the knowledge about deep fluidscirculation changing during seismicity.Laboratory and on-field analyses included major, minor and trace elementsas well as dissolved gases (He, Ar, CH4, CO2, H2S,222Rn, NH4, As, Li, Fe, B, etc...) and selected isotopic ratios(C, H, O, He, Sr, Cl), meaningful from tectonic point of view.The chemistry and isotopic chemistry of the spring were fully outlined anddiscussed, pointing out the main process involving the thermal aquifer: thewater-rock interaction inside the Evaporite Triassic Basement (ETB),possibly involving also the Paleozoic Crystalline Basement. On theother hand, sudden and apparent geochemical and hydrogeologicalvariations during the seismic sequence ruled out an evolution in thewater-rock interaction processes. They occurred both at depth, i.e.,induced by fluid remobilization within the crust explained by the Coseismic Strain Model and by the Fault Valve Activity Model, and in the shallow part of the reservoir (i.e., meteoric watercontamination). A statistical multivariable analysis (Factor Analysis) wasaccomplished to better constrain the correlation between the paroxysmalphases of the seismic sequence and the observed trends and spike-likeanomalies. The groundwater variations was inferred to occur mainly insidethe ETB, from depth (1–2 km) up to surface, particularly in associationof the Sellano earthquake (14/10/1997) and of the seismic re-activationof the sequence at the end of March 1998 (Gualdo Tadino-Rigali andVerchiano areas). The lack of deeper input from below the ETB (slightsignature of PCB), as the lack of He mantle signature, during the seismicperiod as a whole, accounted for seismogenic fault segments rooted onlyin the crust. The results also provide useful information about theearthquake-related response mechanisms occurring at this site, thatrepresent the basic task for planning and managing the impendinghydro-geochemical network aimed at defining the relationships betweenseismic cycle, fluids and reliable earthquake forerunners.

The efficiency of different digestion methods (six microwave decomposition methods and a wet acid digestion method) in the solubilisation of six metals (Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, Cd, Zn), for their determination in fly ashes, was compared. Five different mineral acid mixtures and two different microwave systems were tested. The study was carried out by analyzing two highly homogenised fly ash samples (from sewage sludge and city waste incineration) provided by the Joint Research Centre of Ispra. Determinations were performed by atomic absorption spectrometry and by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The analytical performance of the laboratory was evaluated using the 1633a Coal Fly Ash Standard Reference Material of National Bureau of Standards (NBS SRM 1633a). Results showed that a HNO3 microwave treatment was strong enough to solubilise metals from the considered fly ashes. Moreover, microwave methods generally provided higher release than the classical aqua regia method, whereas no significant advantage was observed using a high performance microwave unit.

A priority task for correct environmental planningis to evaluate Natural Hazards, especially inhighly populated areas. In particular, thoroughinvestigations based on different Earth Sciencetechniques must be addressed for the Seismic HazardAssessment (SHA) in tectonically active areas. Notonly the management but also the multidisciplinaryanalysis of all the SHA-related data sets is bestperformed using a Geographic Information System. In this paper we show how a research-oriented GIS isbuilt and used in a practical case. The GeochemicalGeographic Information System (G2IS) wasdeveloped and applied to the Gargano promontory(southern Italy) in the framework of an EC researchproject, the Geochemical Seismic Zonation (GSZ)Project. This multidisciplinary – multiscalingpowerful tool is described in its structure, updatingprocedures and manipulation techniques. Preliminaryresults are presented on the detection of geochemically active fault zones and theircorrelation with remote sensing data and otherevidences of seismogenic structures.

The geochemical characterization of ophiolitic soils in a temperate climate based on the nature of basic bedrock has been scarcely investigated. In this work we have taken into account major, minor and trace element data and clay, silt, sand and organic matter contents of ophiolitic soils collected from several places in Tuscany (Central Italy) where the chemical nature of the bedrocks is known. Thus, using data belonging to three groups of soils collected on serpentinitic, gabbroic and basaltic bedrocks we have studied the influence of the bedrock on the chemical character of the soils. We have applied discriminatt analysis techniques to find a “classification rule” both to discriminate the groups originally determined and to assign new samples to one of these groups. Furthermore, starting from a large number of variables defining the overall chemical character of soil samples, we have found that only a few variables contribute to discriminate the three groups.

Mineralogical and geochemical studies were undertaken in the volcanic area of Biancavilla (Catania, Italy) with the aim of explaining the nature of the high As and F contents of the area’s rocks. As and F contents in soils and groundwater were also investigated. The metasomatised benmoreite lavas show fluorine and arsenic concentrations up to about 3,000 and 1,000 mg/kg, respectively. Mineralogical analyses show that fluorine occurs mostly in fluoro-edenite and apatite-(CaF) crystals, both abundantly present in the altered rocks, while As is exclusively attributed to the apatite-(CaF) crystals. Specifically, arsenic was observed only at the borders of these apatite crystals. Leaching tests and sequential extraction procedures were carried out to evaluate the potential remobilisation of As and F by the mineral phases and the eventual risks induced by their spreading. The results of the leaching tests suggest that As is almost totally associated with the ‘easily reducible’ fraction and that it is released by the preferential dissolution of the arsenic enriched rims of apatite-(CaF) crystals. In soils, As concentration is relatively low (about 15 mg/kg, on average), while F ranges from 236 to 683 mg/kg. The underground waters supplying the town of Biancavilla show As and F contents lower than the allowed limits for drinking water, (As:10 μg/L, F:1–1.5 mg/L). The limited distribution of these rocks and the relatively limited mobilisation by the minerals both contribute to maintain low As and F values, in soils and groundwaters, despite the high values in metasomatised lava samples.

The results of a study on the distribution of major and trace elements in the bulk soils and in the EDTA-extractable fraction in nine soil profiles and in some related plant species from the Mt. Ferrato area (Florence, Italy) are reported. The topsoils display a moderate enrichment in those elements generally related to the organic matter content (e.g. Cd, Co, Cu, Pb, Zn) although many of the parent material characteristics, especially with regard to the major elements (high Mg content, low Ca/Mg ratios, low K concentrations) are still preserved. The data obtained from the EDTA-extractable element concentrations show a general decreasing trend with depth within the profiles. Aluminium, Cr and Ti are the least EDTA-extractable elements, while Mg presents a high tendency to form organic complexes with EDTA. Heavy metals are generally enriched in the topsoil in relation to the organic matter content, confirming they enter the biogeochemical cycle. No ‘toxic levels’, especially as regards heavy metals, have been found. Data on trace element content in plants are below the concentrations considered excessive or toxic. However, high Mn abundances (420 mg/kg), Cr (5.5 mg/kg) and Ni (> 10 mg/kg) have been sporadically found. Therefore, no evident signs of pollution occur in the area investigated. The well known infertility of the ophiolitic soils could be a consequence of a ‘synergism’ resulting from the combined effects of major and trace elements.
