Habituation to onset distractors has been shown to be stronger the higher the distractor probability. However, since in previous studies distractor probability covaried with distractor numerosity, it was unclear whether habituation was controlled by a mechanism that relies on distractor expectation (Sokolov, 1963), or by a mechanism that is merely driven by the number of stimulations delivered to the nervous system (GrovesThompson, 1970). To address this issue, we manipulated the probability of distractor occurrence at a fixed location, without varying the number of distractors being presented. The results of Experiment 1 clearly favored the Sokolov model of habituation, showing that habituation of capture is controlled by the level of distractor expectation for the same distractors number. Experiment 2 excluded that the pattern of habituation was determined by the difference in the temporal frequency of the distractor between higher and lower distractor rates. Furthermore, the results of Experiment 3 suggested that the amount of habituation of capture is mainly controlled by the local rather than by the global rate of the onset distractor occurrence, thus indicating that habituation of capture is largely spatially specific. Recent findings demonstrate that habituation of capture is stronger where onset distractors are frequent and weaker where they are rare, thus showing that habituation to onsets has a spatial selective nature. However, a debated question is whether habituation at a specific location is exclusively determined by the distractors’ local rate, or whether instead local habituation is also affected by the global rate of the distractors, which may occur also at other locations. Here, we report the results from a between-participants experiment involving three groups of participants exposed to visual onsets during a visual search task. In two groups, onsets appeared at a single location with a high 60% rate or a low 15% rate, respectively, whereas in a third group, distractors could appear in four distinct locations with the same 15% local rate, leading to a 60% global rate. Our results confirmed that locally, habituation of capture was stronger the higher the distractors rate. However, the key finding was that we found a clear and robust modulation of the global distractors rate on the local habituation level. Taken together, our results unambiguously show that habituation has both a spatially selective and a spatially nonselective nature.

A great wealth of studies has investigated the capacity of motivationally relevant stimuli to bias attention, suggesting that reward predicting cues are prioritized even when reward is no longer delivered and when attending to such stimuli is detrimental to reward achievement. Despite multiple procedures have been adopted to unveil the mechanisms whereby reward cues gain attentional salience, some open questions remain. Indeed, mechanisms different from motivation can be responsible for the capture of attention triggered by the reward cue. In addition, we note that at present only a few studies have sought to address whether the cue attractiveness dynamically follows changes in the associated reward value. Investigating how and to what extent the salience of the reward cue is updated when motivation changes, could help shedding light on how reward-cues attain and maintain their capacity to attract attention, and therefore on apparent irrational attentive behaviors.

An increasing bulk of evidence shows that through different mechanisms, experienced-based or voluntary, reactive or proactive, human beings can attenuate the distracting impact of salient visual, albeit irrelevant, stimuli. Current mechanisms assume that this is achieved by suppressing the salient distractor's features or location at the priority map level, or at lower dimension-based maps levels. However, this functional architecture has so far ignored the role of time in distractors filtering, a key question that we have addressed in the present study. We found that during a visual discrimination task, a "standard" onset distractor, always appearing at the same interval from the beginning of the trial, was subject to habituation. Crucially, however, when the onset distractor was unfrequently presented with an unexpected 1-second delay, it reboosted capture at full strength, while the "standard" distractor continued to remain overall habituated. As predicted by Sokolov's (1963, Annual Review of Physiology, 25[1], 545-580) theory, our results show that habituation mechanisms filter the irrelevant distracting sensory input also on the basis of its temporal parameters. We conclude that habituation to onsets is controlled also by time-based expectation mechanisms and suggest that more recently proposed theories of distractors filtering should also incorporate the temporal parameter among the factors that allow an efficient handling of visual distraction.

Previous evidence has shown that after conditioning reward cues may continue to grab attention even when the paired reward is devalued, thus triggering an irrational attentional capture. Here, we investigated whether such persistent cue attentional salience, once established, can be abolished. In Experiment 1, we first confirmed that the cue attentional salience outlasted reward devaluation, and then we found that such persistent capture did not change after an incentive-learning procedure with a devalued reward. In Experiment 2, we showed that the reward cue salience remained unaltered after reward devaluation for at least 1 week. In Experiment 3, we finally succeeded in modifying the cue attentional salience when a new contingency between the cue and the reward was learned, and the reward was not devalued, such that the organism was in a high motivational state. The pattern of results emerging from our study reveals a complex interaction between attention, learning, and motivation, and may help shedding light on the learning mechanisms underlying addiction. Previous studies have shown that abrupt onsets randomly appearing at different locations can be ignored with practice, a result that was interpreted as an instance of habituation. Here we addressed whether habituation of capture can be spatially selective and determined by the rate of onset occurrence at different locations, and whether habituation is achieved via spatial suppression applied at the distractor location. In agreement with the habituation hypothesis, we found that capture attenuation was larger where the onset distractor occurred more frequently, similarly to what has been documented for feature-singleton distractors (the “distractor-location effect”), and that onset interference decreased across trials at both the high- and low-probability distractor locations. By contrast, evidence was inconclusive as to whether distractor filtering was also accompanied by a larger impairment in target processing when it appeared at the more likely distractor location (the “target-location effect”), as instead previously reported for feature-singleton distractors. Finally, here we discuss how and to what extent distractor rejection based on statistical learning and habituation of capture are different, and conclude that the two notions are intimately related, as the Sokolov model of habituation operates by comparing the upcoming sensory input with expectation based on the statistics of previous stimulation.

Effects of statistical learning (SL) of distractor location have been shown to persist when the probabilities of distractor occurrence are equalized across different locations in a so-called extinction phase. Here, we asked whether lingering effects of SL are still observed when a true extinction phase, during which the distractor is completely omitted, is implemented. The results showed that, once established, the effects of SL of distractor location do survive the true extinction phase, indicating that the pattern of suppression in the saliency map is encoded in a form of long-lasting memory. Quite unexpectedly, we also found that the amount of filtering implemented at a given location is not only dictated by the specific rate of distractor occurrence at that location, as previously found, but also by the global distractor probability. We therefore suggest that the visual attention system could be more or less (implicitly) prone to suppression as a function of how often the distractor is encountered overall, and that this suppressive bias affects the degree of suppression at the specific distractor-probability location. Finally, our results showed that the effects of SL of distractor location can appear much more rapidly than has been previously documented, requiring a few trials to become manifest. Hence, SL of distractor location appears to have an asymmetrical rate of learning during acquisition and extinction, while the amount of suppression exerted at a specific distractor location is modulated by distractor contextual probabilistic information.

We present an analysis of the light curve (LC) decline rates $(\Delta m_{15})$ of 407 normal and peculiar supernovae (SNe) Ia and global parameters of their host galaxies. As previously known, there is a significant correlation between the $\Delta m_{15}$ of normal SNe Ia and global ages (morphologies, colours, masses) of their hosts. On average, those normal SNe Ia that are in galaxies from the Red Sequence (early-type, massive, old hosts) have faster declining LCs in comparison with those from the Blue Cloud (late-type, less massive, younger hosts) of the colour-mass diagram. The observed correlations between the $\Delta m_{15}$ of normal SNe Ia and hosts' parameters appear to be due to the superposition of at least two distinct populations of faster and slower declining normal SNe Ia from older and younger stellar components. We show, for the first time, that the $\Delta m_{15}$ of 91bg- and 91T-like SNe is independent of host morphology and colour. The distribution of hosts on the colour-mass diagram confirms the known tendency for 91bg-like SNe to occur in globally red/old galaxies while 91T-like events prefer blue/younger hosts. On average, the youngest global ages of 02cx-like SNe hosts and their positions in the colour-mass diagram hint that these events likely originate from young population, but they differ from 91T-like events in the LC decline rate. Cay, Y. Z., et al., We present the spectroscopic and photometric study of five intermediate-luminosity red transients (ILRTs), namely AT 2010dn, AT 2012jc, AT 2013la, AT 2013lb, and AT 2018aes. They share common observational properties and belong to a family of objects similar to the prototypical ILRT SN 2008S. These events have a rise time that is less than 15 days and absolute peak magnitudes of between-11.5 and-14.5 mag. Their pseudo-bolometric light curves peak in the range 0.5-9.0 × 1040 erg s-1 and their total radiated energies are on the order of (0.3-3) × 1047 erg. After maximum brightness, the light curves show a monotonic decline or a plateau, resembling those of faint supernovae IIL or IIP, respectively. At late phases, the light curves flatten, roughly following the slope of the 56Co decay. If the late-time power source is indeed radioactive decay, these transients produce 56Ni masses on the order of 10-4 to 10-3 M⊙. The spectral energy distribution of our ILRT sample, extending from the optical to the mid-infrared (MIR) domain, reveals a clear IR excess soon after explosion and non-negligible MIR emission at very late phases. The spectra show prominent H lines in emission with a typical velocity of a few hundred km s-1, along with Ca II features. In particular, the [Ca II] λ7291,7324 doublet is visible at all times, which is a characteristic feature for this family of transients. The identified progenitor of SN 2008S, which is luminous in archival Spitzer MIR images, suggests an intermediate-mass precursor star embedded in a dusty cocoon. We propose the explosion of a super-asymptotic giant branch star forming an electron-capture supernova as a plausible explanation for these events.

Simple Summary Habituation reflects the ability to learn to ignore irrelevant stimuli, which form the vast majority of the sensory input impinging on any organism’s sensory systems at a given moment. However, although habituation is often described as one of the simplest forms of learning affected only by the stimulus features, such as frequency or intensity, in fact evidence exists showing that habituation can be specific for the context in which it takes place. This shows that habituation, in some cases, exhibits an associative nature, and that the underlying learning mechanism is more sophisticated than previously believed. Abstract Habituation consists of the progressive response decrement to a repeated stimulation, a response decline that is not accounted for by sensory or motor fatigue. Together with sensitization, habituation has been traditionally considered to be a prototypical example of non-associative learning, being affected only by the features of the stimulation, as for instance its intensity or frequency. However, despite this widespread belief, evidence exists showing that habituation can be specific to the context of the stimulation, thus suggesting that habituation can have an associative nature. Such an unexpected characteristic of habituation was in fact predicted by a theoretical model of associative learning proposed by Wagner in a series of works that appeared in the late 1970s. Here, we critically review the experimental data that since then have been accumulated in support of this hypothesis. What emerges from the literature is that context-specific habituation is common to several animal species and that the ability to form an association between the habituating stimulus and its context is independent of the complexity of the animal’s nervous system. Finally, context-specific habituation is observed for a variety of organism’s responses, ranging from visceral to motor and mental activities.

Previous studies have confirmed that visual onsets are very powerful in attracting our gaze. The reflexive saccades triggered by sudden onsets have a high adaptive value because they ensure a rapid inspection of potentially appetitive or dangerous events. Here we showed, however, that such exogenously driven saccades are rapidly attenuated as the exposure to the same irrelevant onset progresses. Crucially, we found that such decrement in oculomotor capture conforms to several key features of habituation, an ancestral and widespread form of learning, consisting in a response reduction to a repeated irrelevant stimulation. In addition, we documented both spontaneous recovery and specificity of habituation, the phenomenon of dishabituation, and that habituation of capture was stimulation-frequency dependent. We also found both short-term and long-term habituation of oculomotor capture. Although we cannot exclude the contribution of top-down strategic inhibitory mechanisms to filter the onset distractors, the oculomotor capture reduction that we have documented finds a straightforward explanation in the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying habituation of the orienting reflex, as originally suggested by Sokolov. Our study lends support to the idea that habituation plays a key filtering role in regulating the exogenous saccadic response triggered by peripheral onset distractors. For the good and the bad, the world around us is full of distraction. In particular, onset stimuli that appear abruptly in the scene grab attention, thus disrupting the ongoing task. Different cognitive mechanisms for distractor filtering have been proposed, but prevalent accounts share the idea that filtering is accomplished to shield target processing from interference. Here we provide novel evidence that challenges this view, as passive exposure to a repeating visual onset is sufficient to trigger learning-dependent mechanisms to filter the unwanted stimulation. In other words, our study shows that during passive exposure the cognitive system is capable of learning about the characteristics of the salient yet irrelevant stimulation, and to reduce the responsiveness of the attention system to it, thus significantly decreasing the impact of the distractor upon start of an active task. However, despite passive viewing efficiently attenuates the spatial capture of attention, a short-lived performance cost is found when the distractor is initially encountered within the context of the active task. This cost, which dissipates in a few trials, likely reflects the need to familiarize with the distractor, already seen during passive viewing, in the new context of the active task. Although top-down inhibitory signals can be applied to distractors for the successful completion of goal-directed behavior, our results emphasize the role of more automatic habituation mechanisms for distraction exclusion based on a neural model of the history of the irrelevant stimulation. We present the detailed optical evolution of a Type Ib SN 2015dj in NGC 7371, using data spanning up to ∼170 days after discovery. SN 2015dj shares similarity in light-curve shape with SN 2007gr and peaks at M V = -17.37 0.02 mag. Analytical modeling of the quasi bolometric light curve yields 0.06 0.01 M o˙ of 56Ni, ejecta mass M o˙, and kinetic energy erg. The spectral features show a fast evolution and resemble those of spherically symmetric ejecta. This is partly because large-scale transient surveys operate at optical wavelengths, making it challenging to detect transient sources that occur in regions susceptible to high extinction factors. Here we present the discovery and follow-up observations of two CCSNe that occurred in the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) NGC 3256. The first, SN 2018ec, was discovered using the ESO HAWK-I/GRAAL adaptive optics seeing enhancer, and was classified as a Type Ic with a host galaxy extinction of AV = 2.1−0.1+0.3 mag. The second, AT 2018cux, was discovered during the course of follow-up observations of SN 2018ec, and is consistent with a subluminous Type IIP classification with an AV = 2.1 ± 0.4 mag of host extinction. A third CCSN, PSN J10275082−4354034 in NGC 3256, was previously reported in 2014, and we recovered the source in late-time archival Hubble Space Telescope imaging. Based on template light curve fitting, we favour a Type IIn classification for it with modest host galaxy extinction of AV = 0.3−0.3+0.4 mag. We also extend our study with follow-up data of the recent Type IIb SN 2019lqo and Type Ib SN 2020fkb that occurred in the LIRG system Arp 299 with host extinctions of AV = 2.1−0.3+0.1 and AV = 0.4−0.2+0.1 mag, respectively. Motivated by the above, we inspected, for the first time, a sample of 29 CCSNe located within a projected distance of 2.5 kpc from the host galaxy nuclei in a sample of 16 LIRGs. We find, if star formation within these galaxies is modelled assuming a global starburst episode and normal IMF, that there is evidence of a correlation between the starburst age and the CCSN subtype. We infer that the two subgroups of 14 H-poor (Type IIb/Ib/Ic/Ibn) and 15 H-rich (Type II/IIn) CCSNe have different underlying progenitor age distributions, with the H-poor progenitors being younger at 3σ significance. The origin and phenomenology of the Fast Radio Burst (FRB) remains unknown despite more than a decade of efforts. Though several models have been proposed to explain the observed data, none is able to explain alone the variety of events so far recorded. The leading models consider magnetars as potential FRB sources. The recent detection of FRBs from the galactic magnetar SGR J1935+2154 seems to support them. Still, emission duration and energetic budget challenge all these models. Like for other classes of objects initially detected in a single band, it appeared clear that any solution to the FRB enigma could only come from a coordinated observational and theoretical effort in an as wide as possible energy band. In particular, the detection and localisation of optical/NIR or/and high-energy counterparts seemed an unavoidable starting point that could shed light on the FRB physics. Multiwavelength (MWL) search campaigns were conducted for several FRBs, in particular for repeaters. Here we summarize the observational and theoretical results and the perspectives in view of the several new sources accurately localised that will likely be identified by various radio facilities worldwide. We conclude that more dedicated MWL campaigns sensitive to the millisecond--minute timescale transients are needed to address the various aspects involved in the identification of FRB counterparts. Dedicated instrumentation could be one of the key points in this respect. In the optical/NIR band, fast photometry looks to be the only viable strategy. Large surveys with new-generation high-contrast imaging instruments are needed to derive the frequency and properties of exoplanet populations with separations from ~5 to 300 au. A careful assessment of the stellar properties is crucial for a proper understanding of when, where, and how frequently planets form, and how they evolve. The sensitivity of detection limits to stellar age makes this a key parameter for direct imaging surveys. Aims. We describe the SpHere INfrared survey for Exoplanets (SHINE), the largest direct imaging planet-search campaign initiated at the VLT in 2015 in the context of the SPHERE Guaranteed Time Observations of the SPHERE consortium. In this first paper we present the selection and the properties of the complete sample of stars surveyed with SHINE, focusing on the targets observed during the first phase of the survey (from February 2015 to February 2017). This early sample composed of 150 stars is used to perform a preliminary statistical analysis of the SHINE data, deferred to two companion papers presenting the survey performance, main discoveries, and the preliminary statistical constraints set by SHINE. Methods. Based on a large database collecting the stellar properties of all young nearby stars in the solar vicinity (including kinematics, membership to moving groups, isochrones, lithium abundance, rotation, and activity), we selected the original sample of 800 stars that were ranked in order of priority according to their sensitivity for planet detection in direct imaging with SPHERE. The properties of the stars that are part of the early statistical sample wererevisited, including for instance measurements from the Gaia Data Release 2. Rotation periods were derived for the vast majority of the late-type objects exploiting TESS light curves and dedicated photometric observations. Results. Gravitational wave (GW) astronomy has rapidly reached maturity, becoming a fundamental observing window for modern astrophysics. The coalescences of a few tens of black hole (BH) binaries have been detected, while the number of events possibly including a neutron star (NS) is still limited to a few. On 2019 August 14, the LIGO and Virgo interferometers detected a high-significance event labelled S190814bv. A preliminary analysis of the GW data suggests that the event was likely due to the merger of a compact binary system formed by a BH and a NS. Aims. In this paper, we present our extensive search campaign aimed at uncovering the potential optical and near infrared electromagnetic counterpart of S190814bv. We found no convincing electromagnetic counterpart in our data. We therefore use our non-detection to place limits on the properties of the putative outflows that could have been produced by the binary during and after the merger. Methods. Thanks to the three-detector observation of S190814bv, and given the characteristics of the signal, the LIGO and Virgo Collaborations delivered a relatively narrow localisation in low latency - a 50% (90%) credible area of 5 deg2 (23 deg2) - despite the relatively large distance of 267 ± 52 Mpc. ElectromagNetic counterparts of GRAvitational wave sources at the VEry Large Telescope collaboration members carried out an intensive multi-epoch, multi-instrument observational campaign to identify the possible optical and near infrared counterpart of the event. In addition, the ATLAS, GOTO, GRAWITA-VST, Pan-STARRS, and VINROUGE projects also carried out a search on this event. In this paper, we describe the combined observational campaign of these groups. Results. Our observations allow us to place limits on the presence of any counterpart and discuss the implications for the kilonova (KN), which was possibly generated by this NS-BH merger, and for the strategy of future searches. The typical depth of our wide-field observations, which cover most of the projected sky localisation probability (up to 99.8%, depending on the night and filter considered), is r ∼ 22 (resp. K ∼ 21) in the optical (resp. near infrared). We reach deeper limits in a subset of our galaxy-targeted observations, which cover a total ∼50% of the galaxy-mass-weighted localisation probability. Altogether, our observations allow us to exclude a KN with large ejecta mass M 0.1 M- to a high (> 90%) confidence, and we can exclude much smaller masses in a sub-sample of our observations. This disfavours the tidal disruption of the neutron star during the merger. Conclusions. Despite the sensitive instruments involved in the campaign, given the distance of S190814bv, we could not reach sufficiently deep limits to constrain a KN comparable in luminosity to AT 2017gfo on a large fraction of the localisation probability. This suggests that future (likely common) events at a few hundred megaparsecs will be detected only by large facilities with both a high sensitivity and large field of view. Galaxy-targeted observations can reach the needed depth over a relevant portion of the localisation probability with a smaller investment of resources, but the number of galaxies to be targeted in order to get a fairly complete coverage is large, even in the case of a localisation as good as that of this event. © K. RefPlanets is a guaranteed time observation (GTO) programme that uses the Zurich IMaging POLarimeter (ZIMPOL) of SPHERE/VLT for a blind search for exoplanets in wavelengths from 600-900 nm. The goals of this study are the characterization of the unprecedented high polarimetic contrast and polarimetric precision capabilities of ZIMPOL for bright targets, the search for polarized reflected light around some of the closest bright stars to the Sun and potentially the direct detection of an evolved cold exoplanet for the first time. For our observations of Alpha Cen A and B, Sirius A, Altair, Eps Eri and Tau Ceti we used the polarimetric differential imaging (PDI) mode of ZIMPOL which removes the speckle noise down to the photon noise limit for angular separations >0.6". We describe some of the instrumental effects that dominate the noise for smaller separations and explain how to remove these additional noise effects in post-processing. We then combine PDI with angular differential imaging (ADI) as a final layer of post-processing to further improve the contrast limits of our data at these separations. For good observing conditions we achieve polarimetric contrast limits of 15.0-16.3 mag at the effective inner working angle of about 0.13", 16.3-18.3 mag at 0.5" and 18.8-20.4 mag at 1.5". The contrast limits closer in (0.6"), the limits mainly depend on the brightness of the star and the total integration time. We compare our results with contrast limits from other surveys and review the exoplanet detection limits obtained with different detection methods. For all our targets we achieve unprecedented contrast limits. Son of X-Shooter (SOXS) will be a high-efficiency spectrograph with a mean Resolution-Slit product of ∼ 4500 over the entire band capable of simultaneously observing the complete spectral range 350-2000 nm. It consists of three scientific arms (the UV-VIS Spectrograph, the NIR Spectrograph, and the Acquisition Camera) connected by the Common Path system to the NTT, and the Calibration Unit. The Common Path is the backbone of the instrument and the interface to the NTT Nasmyth focus flange. The instrument project went through the Final Design Review in 2018 and is currently in Assembly Integration and test (AIT) Phase. This paper outlines the observing modes of SOXS and the efficiency of each subsystem and the laboratory test plan to evaluate it.

arXiv:2003.12748v2, et al., We report on the lowest-frequency detection to date of three bursts from the fast radio burst FRB 180916.J0158+65, observed at 328 MHz with the Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT). The SRT observed the periodic repeater FRB 180916.J0158+65 for five days from 2020 February 20 to 24 during a time interval of active radio bursting, and detected the three bursts during the first hour of observations; no more bursts were detected during the remaining ~30 hr. Simultaneous SRT observations at 1548 MHz did not detect any bursts. Burst fluences are in the range 37 to 13 Jy ms. No relevant scattering is observed for these bursts. We also present the results of the multi-wavelength campaign we performed on FRB 180916.J0158+65, during the five days of the active window. Simultaneously with the SRT observations, others with different time spans were performed with the Northern Cross at 408 MHz, with XMM-Newton, NICER, INTEGRAL, AGILE, and with the TNG and two optical telescopes in Asiago, which are equipped with fast photometers. XMM-Newton obtained data simultaneously with the three bursts detected by the SRT, and determined a luminosity upper limit in the 0.3–10 keV energy range of ~1045 erg s−1 for the burst emission. AGILE obtained data simultaneously with the first burst and determined a fluence upper limit in the MeV range for millisecond timescales of ${10}^{-8}\,\mathrm{erg}\,{\mathrm{cm}}^{-2}$. Our results show that absorption from the circumburst medium does not significantly affect the emission from FRB 180916.J0158+65, thus limiting the possible presence of a superluminous supernova around the source, and indicate that a cutoff for the bursting mechanism, if present, must be at lower frequencies. Terreran, In this paper we report the results of the first ~four years of spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of the Type IIn supernova SN 2015da (also known as PSN J13522411+3941286, or iPTF16tu). The supernova exploded in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 5337 in a relatively highly extinguished environment. The transient showed prominent narrow Balmer lines in emission at all times and a slow rise to maximum in all bands. In addition, early observations performed by amateur astronomers give a very well-constrained explosion epoch. The observables are consistent with continuous interaction between the supernova ejecta and a dense and extended H-rich circumstellar medium. The presence of such an extended and dense medium is difficult to reconcile with standard stellar evolution models, since the metallicity at the position of SN 2015da seems to be slightly subsolar. Interaction is likely the mechanism powering the light curve, as confirmed by the analysis of the pseudo bolometric light curve, which gives a total radiated energy ≳ 1051 erg. Modeling the light curve in the context of a supernova shock breakout through a dense circumstellar medium allowed us to infer the mass of the prexisting gas to be ≂ 8 MO , with an extreme mass-loss rate for the progenitor star ≂ 0.6 MO yr-1, suggesting that most of the circumstellar gas was produced during multiple eruptive events. Near- and mid-infrared observations reveal a fluxexcess in these domains, similar to those observed in SN 2010jl and other interacting transients, likely due to preexisting radiatively heated dust surrounding the supernova. By modeling the infrared excess, we infer a mass ≳ 0.4 × 10-3 MO for the dust., The Oskar Klein Centre is funded by the Swedish Research Council. We present an extensive (∼1200 d) photometric and spectroscopic monitoring of the Type IIn supernova (SN) 2012ab. After a rapid initial rise leading to a bright maximum (MR = −19.39 mag), the light curves show a plateau lasting about 2 months followed by a steep decline up to about 100 d. Only in the U band, the decline is constant in the same interval. At later phases, the light curves remain flatter than the 56Co decline, suggesting the increasing contribution of the interaction between SN ejecta with circumstellar material (CSM). Although heavily contaminated by emission lines of the host galaxy, the early spectral sequence (until 32 d) shows persistent narrow emissions, indicative of slow unshocked CSM, and the emergence of broad Balmer lines of hydrogen with P-Cygni profiles over a blue continuum, arising from a fast expanding SN ejecta. From about 2 months to ∼1200 d, the P-Cygni profiles are overcome by intermediate width emissions [full width at half-maximum (FWHM) ∼6000 km s−1], produced in the shocked region due to interaction. On the red wing, a red bump appears after 76 d, likely a signature of the onset of interaction of the receding ejecta with the CSM. The presence of fast material both approaching and then receding is suggestive that we are observing the SN along the axis of a jet-like ejection in a cavity devoid of or uninterrupted by CSM in the innermost regions., NER acknowledges support from the Spanish MICINN grant ESP2017-82674-R and FEDER funds. The SHINE project is a 500-star survey performed with SPHERE on the VLT for the purpose of directly detecting new substellar companions and understanding their formation and early evolution. Here we present an initial statistical analysis for a subsample of 150 stars that are representative of the full SHINE sample. Our goal is to constrain the frequency of substellar companions with masses between 1 and 75 MJup and semimajor axes between 5 and 300 au. We adopt detection limits as a function of angular separation from the survey data for all stars converted into mass and projected orbital separation using the BEX-COND-hot evolutionary tracks and known distance to each system. Based on the results obtained for each star and on the 13 detections in the sample, we use a MCMC tool to compare our observations to two different types of models. The first is a parametric model based on observational constraints, and the second type are numerical models that combine advanced core accretion and gravitational instability planet population synthesis. Using the parametric model, we show that the frequencies of systems with at least one substellar companion are $23.0_{-9.7}^{+13.5}\%$, $5.8_{-2.8}^{+4.7}\%$, and $12.6_{-7.1}^{+12.9}\%$ for BA, FGK, and M stars, respectively. We also demonstrate that a planet-like formation pathway probably dominates the mass range from 1-75 MJup for companions around BA stars, while for M dwarfs, brown dwarf binaries dominate detections. In contrast, a combination of binary star-like and planet-like formation is required to best fit the observations for FGK stars. Using our population model and restricting our sample to FGK stars, we derive a frequency of $5.7_{-2.8}^{+3.8}\%$, consistent with predictions from the parametric model. The oculomotor capture triggered by a peripheral onset is subject to habituation, a basic form of learning consisting in a response decrement toward a repeatedly presented stimulus. However, it is unclear whether habituation of reflexive saccades takes place at the saccadic programming or execution stage (or both). To address this issue, we exploited the fact that during fixation the programming of a reflexive saccade exerts a robust but short-lasting phasic inhibition in the absolute microsaccadic frequency. Hence, if habituation of reflexive saccades occurs at the programming stage, then this should also affect the microsaccadic frequency, with a progressive reduction of the inhibitory phase. Conversely, if habituation occurs only at the later stage of saccade execution, the no change in the microsaccadic pattern is expected. Participants were repeatedly exposed to a peripheral onset distractor, and when eye movements were allowed, we replicated the oculomotor capture habituation. Crucially, however, when fixation was maintained the microsaccadic response did not change as exposure to the onset progressed, suggesting that habituation of reflexive saccades does not take place at the programming stage in the superior colliculus (SC), but at the later stage of saccade execution in the brainstem, where the competition between different saccades might be resolved. This scenario challenges one of the main assumptions of the competitive integration model for oculomotor control, which assumes that competition between exogenous and endogenous saccade programs occurs in the (SC). Our results and interpretation are instead in agreement with neurophysiological studies in non-human primates showing that saccadic adaption, another form of oculomotor plasticity, takes place downstream from the SC.

Context. Circumstellar disks and self-luminous giant exoplanets or companion brown dwarfs can be characterized through direct-imaging polarimetry at near-infrared wavelengths. SPHERE/IRDIS at the Very Large Telescope has the capabilities to perform such measurements, but uncalibrated instrumental polarization effects limit the attainable polarimetric accuracy. Aims. We aim to characterize and correct the instrumental polarization effects of the complete optical system, i.e. the telescope and SPHERE/IRDIS. Methods. We create a detailed Mueller matrix model in the broadband filters Y-, J-, H- and Ks, and calibrate it using measurements with SPHERE's internal light source and observations of two unpolarized stars. We develop a data-reduction method that uses the model to correct for the instrumental polarization effects, and apply it to observations of the circumstellar disk of T Cha. Results. The instrumental polarization is almost exclusively produced by the telescope and SPHERE's first mirror and varies with telescope altitude angle. The crosstalk primarily originates from the image derotator (K-mirror). At some orientations, the derotator causes severe loss of signal (>90% loss in H- and Ks-band) and strongly offsets the angle of linear polarization. With our correction method we reach in all filters a total polarimetric accuracy of, 28 pages, 25 figures

Cognitive models of habituation and dishabituation postulate that the latter is attributable to the perturbation of the model of the repeated stimulation stored in short-term memory (STM) by the occurrence of a new stimulus, called dishabituator. However, although both behavioral phenomena depend on STM, previous studies in Aplysia have found that dishabituation seems to require further steps of development of the STM system to emerge. Here, we addressed whether this is a universal condition for the appearance of the 2 forms of learning, namely whether dishabituation must necessarily follow habituation. To this aim, we studied habituation and dishabituation of the freezing response to a sudden acoustic stimulation in newly hatched chicks (1 day old vs. 3 days old). The results showed that in chicks, dishabituation was fully present a few hours after hatching, a pattern of results indicating that, in this precocial avian species, habituation and dishabituation share the same developmental trajectory and the underlying STM mechanisms are simultaneously operative soon after birth. The incentive-motivational salience acquired by a Pavlovian conditioned stimulus (CS) is reflected by its ability to strengthen the performance of a separately learned instrumental action exerted to obtain an outcome, a phenomenon known as Pavlovian-Instrumental transfer (PIT). By means of a PIT paradigm, the present study addressed whether the CS motivational properties vary dynamically with the value of the associated outcome. Previous studies on human PIT and outcome devaluation have provided mixed results, showing that in some cases post-training devaluation leaves PIT unaffected when outcomes are palatable foods or drugs, and when the devalued outcome is not consumed immediately. In Experiment 1, thirsty participants first learned to squeeze a rubber bulb to accumulate a beverage (plain water or sugary drink); then participants learned Pavlovian associations between cues and the beverage. When tested in extinction, a PIT effect emerged as expected. In Experiment 2, the PIT effect emerged even despite participants quenched their thirst before the test phase. Our results suggest that the incentive properties of a CS can surprisingly and irrationally endure the devaluation of the associated outcome even when plain water is used as reward, and thirst is quenched by immediate reward consumption. This result may provide important insights in the understanding of the psychological mechanisms underlying different types of addiction.

SNhunt151 was initially classified as a supernova (SN) impostor (nonterminal outburst of a massive star). It exhibited a slow increase in luminosity, lasting about 450 d, followed by a major brightening that reaches M_V ~ -18 mag. No source is detected to M_V > -13 mag in archival images at the position of SNhunt151 before the slow rise. Low-to-mid-resolution optical spectra obtained during the pronounced brightening show very little evolution, being dominated at all times by multicomponent Balmer emission lines, a signature of interaction between the material ejected in the new outburst and the pre-existing circumstellar medium. We also analyzed mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope, detecting a source at the transient position in 2014 and 2015. Overall, SNhunt151 is spectroscopically a Type IIn SN, somewhat similar to SN2009ip. However, there are also some differences, such as a slow pre-discovery rise, a relatively broad light-curve peak showing a longer rise time (~ 50 d) and a slower decline, along with a negligible change in the temperature around the peak (T < 10^4 K). We suggest that SNhunt151 is the result of an outburst, or a SN explosion, within a dense circumstellar nebula, similar to those embedding some luminous blue variables like Eta Carinae and originating from past mass-loss events., Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 19 pages with 10 tables and 11 figures

Previous studies have found that in mature animals habituation is context-specific in some species but not in others. Given the mixed evidence present in the literature, we decided to explore whether habituation is context-specific in newborn chicks. The results showed that 3 days after hatching, chicks were capable of using global contextual information to rapidly habituate their freezing response to a series of sudden acoustic stimuli. Our study is the 1st to show context-specific habituation in this avian species, a result in agreement with those of previous findings in adult male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Furthermore, although our study does not intend to provide a systematic investigation of the ontogeny of habituation in this species, our findings show that a few days after hatching, juvenile chicks are capable of a sophisticated associative learning process that takes into account complex environmental information. We present an analysis of the height distributions of the different types of supernovae (SNe) from the plane of their host galaxies. We use a well-defined sample of 102 nearby SNe appeared inside high-inclined (i > 85 deg), morphologically non-disturbed S0-Sd host galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. For the first time, we show that in all the subsamples of spirals, the vertical distribution of core-collapse (CC) SNe is about twice closer to the plane of host disc than the distribution of SNe Ia. In Sb-Sc hosts, the exponential scale height of CC SNe is consistent with those of the younger stellar population in the Milky Way (MW) thin disc, while the scale height of SNe Ia is consistent with those of the old population in the MW thick disc. We show that the ratio of scale lengths to scale heights of the distribution of CC SNe is consistent with those of the resolved young stars with ages from ~ 10 Myr up to ~ 100 Myr in nearby edge-on galaxies and the unresolved stellar population of extragalactic thin discs. The corresponding ratio for SNe Ia is consistent with the same ratios of the two populations of resolved stars with ages from a few 100 Myr up to a few Gyr and from a few Gyr up to ~ 10 Gyr, as well as with the unresolved population of the thick disc. Learning contextual information to form associative memories with stimuli of interest is an important brain function in both human and non-human animals. Intuitively, one would expect that such a sophisticated cognitive skill develops postnatally, as the organism starts exploring the surrounding environment to search for significant contingencies among stimuli. Here we show, instead, that even before hatching, domestic chicks are capable of forming associative memories between discrete alerting sounds and the surrounding context, as attested by the fact that habituation of the freezing response to the sounds is affected by the context of stimulation. This finding indicates that, while in the egg, chicks recognize and learn the context in which they are stimulated. Hence, context learning in chicks is an innate brain function already active before birth, which can provide an immediate survival advantage to the newborns of this precocial avian species.

We present an analysis of the galactocentric distributions of the "normal" and peculiar "91bg-like" subclasses of 109 supernovae (SNe) Ia, and study the global parameters of their elliptical hosts. The galactocentric distributions of the SN subclasses are consistent with each other, and with the radial light distribution of host stellar populations, when excluding bias against central SNe. Among the global parameters, only the distributions of u-r colours and ages are inconsistent significantly between the ellipticals of different SN Ia subclasses: the normal SN hosts are on average bluer/younger than those of 91bg-like SNe. In the colour-mass diagram, the tail of colour distribution of normal SN hosts stretches into the Green Valley - transitional state of galaxy evolution, while the same tail of 91bg-like SN hosts barely reaches that region. Therefore, the bluer/younger ellipticals might have more residual star formation that gives rise to younger "prompt" progenitors, resulting in normal SNe Ia with shorter delay times. The redder and older ellipticals that already exhausted their gas for star formation may produce significantly less normal SNe with shorter delay times, outnumbered by "delayed" 91bg-like events. The host ages (lower age limit of the delay times) of 91bg-like SNe does not extend down to the stellar ages that produce significant u-band fluxes - the 91bg-like events have no prompt progenitors. In this paper, we present extensive optical and ultraviolet (UV) observations of the type Ia supernova (SN Ia) 2013gs discovered during the Tsinghua-NAOC Transient Survey. The photometric observations in the optical show that the light curves of SN 2013gs is similar to that of normal SNe Ia, with an absolute peak magnitude of $M_{B}$ = $-$19.25 $\pm$ 0.15 mag and a post-maximum decline rate $\Delta$m$_{15}$(B) = 1.00 $ \pm $ 0.05 mag. \emph{Gehrels Swift} UVOT observations indicate that SN 2013gs shows unusually strong UV emission (especially in the $uvw1$ band) at around the maximum light (M$_{uvw1}$ $\sim$ $-$18.9 mag). The SN is characterized by relatively weak Fe~{\sc ii} {\sc iii} absorptions at $\sim$ 5000{\AA} in the early spectra and a larger expansion velocity ($v_{Si}$ $\sim$ 13,000 km s$^{-1}$ around the maximum light) than the normal-velocity SNe Ia. We discuss the relation between the $uvw1-v$ color and some observables, including Si~{\sc ii} velocity, line strength of Si~{\sc ii} $\lambda$6355, Fe~{\sc ii}/{\sc iii} lines and $\Delta m_{15}$(B). Compared to other fast-expanding SNe Ia, SN 2013gs exhibits Si and Fe absorption lines with similar strength and bluer $uvw1-v$ color. Daniel, Koffinas and Hughes [1] (hereafter DKH) reported that the mating preferences of female Trinidadian guppy (a tropical fish) are subject to habituation, a behavioural phenomenon reflecting a widespread form of ancestral learning in the animal kingdom [2,3]. The authors found that when a female was repeatedly exposed to a male with a given colour pattern, the female mating interest for males with a similar pattern decreased as a function of the number of exposures. DKH also showed that this response decrement presents several features of habituation, such as stimulus specificity (the mating response recovers for a male with a different colour pattern), spontaneous recovery (the response recovers if the habituated male is temporarily removed) and dishabituation (responsiveness to the habituated male recovers after exposure to a novel male). While the study is certainly of interest, because it shows that habituation can affect biologically significant stimuli, we regretfully have to note that DKH have completely overlooked two areas of research whose results are highly relevant for the question addressed in their study and that can help to understand the reported findings.

The possibility to counteract visual distraction is fundamental for an efficient interaction with the environment, particularly when a salient but irrelevant stimulation repeatedly impinges our visual system. Previous studies have shown that such unwanted attentional capture is subject to habituation, a widespread form of behavioural plasticity that allows rejecting the unwanted stimulation. Although habituation is generally considered to be a non-associative form of learning, here we directly tested the possibility that habituation of attentional capture triggered by a salient onset is context specific. In two experiments we showed that distractor filtering achieved via habituation was specific for the visual context (naturalistic or geometric) in which the distractor was presented. When the same distractor presented during the training phase appeared in a new context in the test phase, a recovery of the previously habituated capture was observed. By contrast, no recovery of capture was found when the background did not change. Habituation mechanisms provide a straightforward explanation for our findings, which show that distractor filtering is achieved by taking into account the spatial context in which the distracting stimulus is encountered.

Distractor suppression, or the ability to disregard salient distractors while dealing with task-relevant information, is a key component of selective attention. Recent research has shown that distractor suppression can take place in different circumstances and present itself in different guises, which is presumably paralleled by a multiplicity of underlying neural mechanisms. In this review article, we discuss a number of central themes concerning distractor suppression and the underlying neural mechanisms, and also highlight several unresolved issues that will have to be addressed in future investigations.

We present a comprehensive set of optical and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic observations for SN 2014ck, extending from pre-maximum to six months later. These data indicate that SN 2014ck is photometrically nearly identical to SN 2002cx, which is the prototype of the class of peculiar transients named SNe Iax. Similar to SN 2002cx, SN 2014ck reached a peak brightness $M_B=-17.37 \pm 0.15$ mag, with a post-maximum decline-rate $\Delta m_{15} (B) = 1.76 \pm 0.15$ mag. However, the spectroscopic sequence shows similarities with SN 2008ha, which was three magnitudes fainter and faster declining. In particular, SN 2014ck exhibits extremely low ejecta velocities, $\sim 3000$ km s$^{-1}$ at maximum, which are close to the value measured for SN 2008ha and half the value inferred for SN 2002cx. The bolometric light curve of SN 2014ck is consistent with the production of $0.10^{+0.04}_{-0.03} M_{\odot}$ of $^{56}$Ni. The spectral identification of several iron-peak features, in particular Co II lines in the NIR, provides a clear link to SNe Ia. Also, the detection of narrow Si, S and C features in the pre-maximum spectra suggests a thermonuclear explosion mechanism. The late-phase spectra show a complex overlap of both permitted and forbidden Fe, Ca and Co lines. The appearance of strong [Ca~II] $\lambda\lambda$7292, 7324 again mirrors the late-time spectra of SN 2008ha and SN 2002cx. The photometric resemblance to SN 2002cx and the spectral similarities to SN 2008ha highlight the peculiarity of SN 2014ck, and the complexity and heterogeneity of the SNe Iax class., Comment: MNRAS Accepted 2016 March 22. For the first time, we show that the corotation radius normalized surface density distribution of CC SNe (tracers of massive star formation) indicates a dip at corotation in long-armed grand-design (LGD) galaxies. The high SNe surface density just inside and outside corotation may be the sign of triggered massive star formation by the DWs. We present an analysis of the impact of spiral density waves (DWs) on the radial and surface density distributions of supernovae (SNe) in host galaxies with different arm classes. We use a well-defined sample of 269 relatively nearby, low-inclination, morphologically non-disturbed and unbarred Sa-Sc galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, hosting 333 SNe. Only for core-collapse (CC) SNe, a significant difference appears when comparing their R25-normalized radial distributions in long-armed grand-design (LGD) versus non-GD (NGD) hosts, with that in LGD galaxies being marginally inconsistent with an exponential profile, while SNe Ia exhibit exponential surface density profiles regardless of the arm class. Using a smaller sample of LGD galaxies with estimated corotation radii (Rc), we show that the Rc-normalized surface density distribution of CC SNe indicates a dip at corotation. Although not statistically significant, the high CC SNe surface density just inside and outside corotation may be the sign of triggered massive star formation by the DWs. Young circumstellar disks are of prime interest to understand the physical and chemical conditions under which planet formation takes place. Only very few detections of planet candidates within these disks exist, and most of them are currently suspected to be disk features. In this context, the transition disk around the young star PDS 70 is of particular interest, due to its large gap identified in previous observations, indicative of ongoing planet formation. We aim to search for the presence of planets and search for disk structures indicative for disk-planet interactions and other evolutionary processes. We analyse new and archival near-infrared (NIR) images of the transition disk PDS 70 obtained with the VLT/SPHERE, VLT/NaCo and Gemini/NICI instruments in polarimetric differential imaging (PDI) and angular differential imaging (ADI) modes. We detect a point source within the gap of the disk at about 195 mas (about 22 au) projected separation. The detection is confirmed at five different epochs, in three filter bands and using different instruments. The astrometry results in an object of bound nature, with high significance. The comparison of the measured magnitudes and colours to evolutionary tracks suggests that the detection is a companion of planetary mass. We confirm the detection of a large gap of about 54 au in size within the disk in our scattered light images, and detect a signal from an inner disk component. We find that its spatial extent is very likely smaller than about 17 au in radius. The images of the outer disk show evidence of a complex azimuthal brightness distribution which may in part be explained by Rayleigh scattering from very small grains. Future observations of this system at different wavelengths and continuing astrometry will allow us to test theoretical predictions regarding planet-disk interactions, planetary atmospheres and evolutionary models., Comment: 23 pages, accepted by A&A

An overview of the optical design for the SOXS spectrograph is presented. SOXS (Son Of X-Shooter) is the new wideband, medium resolution (R>4500) spectrograph for the ESO 3.58m NTT telescope expected to start observations in 2021 at La Silla. The spectroscopic capabilities of SOXS are assured by two different arms. The UV-VIS (350-850 nm) arm is based on a novel concept that adopts the use of 4 ion-etched high efficiency transmission gratings. The NIR (800- 2000 nm) arm adopts the '4C' design (Collimator Correction of Camera Chromatism) successfully applied in X-Shooter. Other optical sub-systems are the imaging Acquisition Camera, the Calibration Unit and a pre-slit Common Path. We describe the optical design of the five sub-systems and report their performance in terms of spectral format, throughput and optical quality.
