Objective: The aim of the study was to determine how the electrical activity of the temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles differs in children with reduced transverse jaw dimension compared to children with normal occlusion., Design: It was a experimental study. Thirty-seven patients were included in the study. 18 in the study group received orthodontic treatment with removable appliances and 19 subjects were classified as normal occlusion subjects in the control group. A panoramic X-ray and digital intraoral scan were taken, followed by an surface electromyography of three muscle pairs (temporalis muscles, masseter muscles, sternocleidomastoid muscles) in resting position, while clenching and clenching on cotton rollers., Results: There was significantly greater activity in the experimental group than in the control group comparing muscles: temporalis muscles and masseter muscles in the resting position. Additionally, significantly greater activity of muscles in the control group was found during clenching. However, the asymmetry index of muscles indicates that there is significantly greater asymmetry of muscles activity in the experimental group. Compared to children with normal occlusion, children with a narrowed transverse dimension of the jaw have statistically significant differences in the bioelectrical activity of the temporalis, masseter and sternocleidomastoid muscles, as well as greater asymmetry in the bioelectrical voltage of the masseter muscles., Conclusions: Patients with reduced transverse dimension of the jaw are characterized by increased resting activity of the masticatory muscles and reduced functional activity of the masticatory muscles. Background: Cancer cachexia is prevalent in head and neck cancer patients. The L3 skeletal muscle index (SMI) is often used to assess sarcopenia and cachexia but is infrequently able to be measured in this population. Masseter muscle thickness (MT) may serve as an alternative predictor of cachexia., Methods: SMI and MT were calculated from 20 trauma (CTRL) and 40 cachectic (CA-CX) and non-cachectic (CA-NCX) head and neck cancer patients. Area Under the Curve of the Receiver Operating Characteristics (AUC-ROC) analysis was performed for SMI and MT., Results: Both SMI and MT were significantly decreased in CA-CX patients (vs. CA-NCX mean difference -19.5 cm 2 /m 2 and -2.06 mm, respectively) and significant predictors of CA-CX (AUC = 0.985 and 0.805, respectively). When analyzed by sex, the same findings were observed for MT in males and trended toward significance in females., Conclusions: Compared with SMI, MT is a good alternative prognostic biomarker to determine CA-CX status in HNC patients., (© 2024 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Objectives: To characterize the effect of facial reanimation using masseteric nerve transfer on the masseter muscle itself, examining whether there is any demonstrable atrophy postoperatively., Methods: Electronic medical records of adult patients who underwent facial reanimation using masseteric nerve transfer at our institution over a 15-year period were reviewed. To account for the impact of postoperative radiation, randomly selected patients who underwent radical parotidectomy without nerve transfer and received postoperative radiation served as controls in a 1:1 fashion against those who underwent masseteric nerve transfer with postoperative radiation., Results: Twenty patients were identified who underwent masseteric nerve transfer and had sufficient pre- and postoperative imaging to assess masseter volume (mean age 58.2, 60% female). Of the four patients who did not receive postoperative radiation, each demonstrated masseteric atrophy on the side of their nerve transfer, with a mean reduction in masseter volume of 20.6%. The remaining 16 patients were included in the case-control analysis accounting for radiation. When compared with controls, those in the study group were found to have a statistically significant difference in atrophy (p = 0.0047) and total volume loss (p = 0.0002). The overall reduction in masseter volume in the study group was significantly higher compared with the control group, at 41.7% and 16.6%, respectively (p = 0.0001)., Conclusion: Facial reanimation utilizing masseteric nerve transfer appears to result in atrophy of the denervated masseter when compared with the contralateral muscle. Background: Occlusal trauma has become a common phenomenon among individuals today. Its primary source is bruxism, which involves unusual activities such as clenching and grinding during the day or sleep. The hypothesis is that with 5% dextrose neuroprolotherapy, both the trigger points and affected nerves will be healed, and the muscle will be relieved by eliminating the pain., Methods: This study aimed to compare the short-term ultrasonographic results of patients treated with occlusal splint and 5% dextrose neuroprolotherapy for bruxism. Patients were divided into two groups: the dextrose neuroprolotherapy group and the occlusal splint group. In the first group, patients were administered 5% dextrose three times at one-week intervals using the dextrose neuroprolotherapy method. Impressions for both jaws were made using a high-viscosity irreversible hydrocolloid impression material in the second group. An occlusal splint was tailored to fit the upper jaw. Patients were assessed for masseter muscle thickness and strain ratio using ultrasonography before and 3 months after the treatment., Results: No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups for all measures. Statistically significant differences were observed in the strain ratio of the left musculus massetericus in the resting position and the thickness of the left musculus massetericus in the contracted position exclusively in the neuroprolotherapy group (p=0.001, p=0.011, respectively). Differences in the strain ratio of both sides of the contracted musculus massetericus were demonstrated in both groups (neuroprolotherapy group: right side p<0.001, left side p=0.007, splint group: right side p=0.005, left side p=0.012)., Conclusion: This study demonstrates that 5% dextrose neuroprolotherapy is an effective treatment comparable to an occlusal splint. Objectively visualizing changes in the masseter muscle through ultrasound provides clear results in the context of occlusal trauma and bruxism.

Fatigue of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) tissues reflects the effects of magnitude (energy density; ED) and frequency of loading (jaw muscle duty factor; DF). This observational study measured these variables and tested for differences in mechanobehavior scores (MBS = ED 2 × DF) and component variables in subjects with and without TMJ disc displacement (±D). In accordance with Institutional Review Board and STROBE guidelines, written informed consent was obtained, and examination and imaging protocols identified eligible adult subjects. Specifically, magnetic resonance imaging was used to assign subjects' TMJs to ±D groups. Subjects were trained to record in-field jaw muscle activities, from which DFs (percentage of recording time) were determined. EDs (mJ/mm 3 ) were estimated using modeled TMJ loads and in vivo dynamic stereometry. Multivariate analysis of variance, post hoc independent t tests, and K-means cluster analysis identified significant group differences ( P < 0.05). Of 242 individuals screened, 65 females (TMJs: 78 +D, 52 -D) and 53 males (TMJs: 39 +D, 67 -D) participated. Subjects produced 312 daytime and 319 nighttime recordings of average duration 6.0 ± 0.2 h and 7.6 ± 0.1 h, respectively, and 219 (114 right, 105 left) intact dynamic stereometry recordings. Average EDs were 2-fold and significantly larger in +D than -D TMJs ( P < 0.0001). DFs were on average 3-fold larger during the daytime versus nighttime for both masseter and temporalis muscles and 1.8- and 3.0-fold larger for the masseter versus temporalis muscle during the daytime and nighttime, respectively. Daytime masseter MBSs for +D TMJs in females were the largest overall at 621 ± 212 (mJ/mm 3 ) 2 % and 2- to 43-fold larger versus -D TMJs in both sexes during daytime and nighttime. Cluster analysis ( P < 0.0001) identified groups 2 and 3, which comprised 87% +D TMJs and had average MBSs 21-fold larger than group 1. Purpose: The impact of GH/IGF-1 levels on skeletal muscle in acromegaly is still controversial. Temporal (TMT) and masseter muscle (MMT) thickness has been recently demonstrated as a reliable measure of muscle mass. We aimed to investigate the relationship between TMT, MMT and clinical/biochemical characteristics in patients with acromegaly., Methods: Single center retrospective longitudinal study including 69 patients with at least one available brain/sella turcica MRI and matched clinical data. TMT, MMT, and muscle fatty infiltration (modified Goutallier score) were evaluated in all patients at baseline (first available MRI) and over time (182 MRIs analyzed)., Results: At baseline, both TMT and MMT were higher in males than females (p = 0.001 and p = 0.016, respectively). TMT and MMT were positively associated (β 0.508, p < 0.001), and they were positively correlated with IGF-1 xULN (TMT, p = 0.047; MMT, p = 0.001). MMT had a positive correlation with patients' weight (p = 0.015) and height (p = 0.006). No correlation was found between TMT, MMT and the presence of hypogonadism. Considering all available MRIs, sex and IGF-1 xULN were significant determinants of TMT and MMT at multivariable analysis (female sex: β -0.345/-0.426, p < 0.001; IGF-1 xULN: β 0.257/0.328, p < 0.001). At longitudinal evaluation, uncontrolled patients at baseline showed a significant reduction of MMT over time (p = 0.044). Remarkable fatty infiltration was observed in 34-37% of MRIs; age was the main determinant (temporal muscle: OR 1.665; p = 0.013; masseter muscle: OR 1.793; p = 0.009)., Conclusion: Male patients with higher IGF-1 values have thicker temporal and masseter muscles, suggesting that sex and IGF-1 have a significant impact on muscle mass in acromegaly., (© 2024. Objectives: Verify whether hypervigilance to pain (HP) and sleep quality (SQ) are confounding variables in the infrared thermography (IT) examination of the temporomandibular joint and temporal and masseter muscles., Methods: A cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted, collecting HP and SQ data from 80 participants without temporomandibular disorders (TMD), performing their IT and another 40 participants with TMD. For the selection of participants with and without TMD, the TMD Pain Screener questionnaire and axis I of the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders were applied. SQ was verified using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. For the HP assessment the Pain Vigilance and Awareness Questionnaire (PVAQ) was applied. And the IT was performed through a FLIR infrared sensor camera, model T650 Infrared., Results: No significant correlations were found between SQ and the temperatures of the areas of interest (P > .05), and regarding HP, a statistically significant positive correlation was found with the dimensionless (ρ = 0.289) and non-dimensionless (ρ = 0.223) asymmetries of temporal muscle temperatures. In the temperature comparisons between the participants without TMD and the participants with TMD, significant differences were found (P < .05), also when the group without TMD was controlled according to both HP and SQ (P < .05), with higher temperatures found in the TMD group., Conclusions: HP and SQ can be considered confounding variables in IT examination of the temporomandibular region., (© The Author(s) 2024. Background: This study aimed to prospectively investigate the reference values for masseter muscle thickness and hardness using ultrasonography and shear wave elastography, respectively, in patients with hemifacial microsomia (HFM)., Methods: We enrolled 51 patients, aged 5-20 years, with HFM including 31 males and 20 females. The upper-lower, left-right, and anterior-posterior diameters of 102 masseter muscles and stiffness of 98 masseter muscles were determined by examining the unaffected and affected sides of each participant's face., Results: The upper-lower, left-right, and anterior-posterior diameters of the masseter muscle were significantly smaller at rest (4.26 ± 0.83, 2.94 ± 0.75, and- 0.80 ± 0.25 cm, respectively) and during contraction (3.95 ± 0.78, 2.71 ± 0.78, and 0.87 ± 0.29 cm, respectively) in the affected side than those in the healthy side (5.45 ± 0.66, 3.87 ± 0.49, and 0.97 ± 0.20 cm, respectively, at rest and 4.99 ± 0.45, 3.49 ± 0.53, and 1.07 ± 0.23 cm, respectively, during contraction, p < 0.05). In the resting state, the hardness of the masseter muscle on the affected side (0.77 ± 0.66 m/s) was significantly greater than that on the healthy side (0.42 ± 0.41 m/s; p < 0.05). The magnitude of changes in the upper-lower, left-right, and anterior-posterior diameters of the biting muscle in the occlusal state were significantly smaller on the affected side (-0.30 ± 0.27, -0.23 ± 0.17, and 0.08 ± 0.08 cm, respectively) than those in the healthy side (-0.47 ± 0.38, -0.37 ± 0.25, and 0.10 ± 0.12 cm, respectively, p < 0.05)., Conclusions: The knowledge of these values allows for better understanding of the disease characteristics of HFM, which may be used for its diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. Mandibular angle osteotomy with outer cortex grinding is an effective cosmetic procedure for correcting square faces. However, morphological changes in the mandible may also cause temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the morphological stabilization of the TMJ and changes in masseter muscle thickness after mandibular angle osteotomy to evaluate the safety of the procedure. Data from patients who underwent mandibular angle osteotomy with outer cortex grinding between January 2016 and January 2019 were retrospectively reviewed. Preoperative and long-term follow-up (~1 y) computed tomography data were collected from these patients, and morphological changes in the TMJ and masseter muscle were analyzed. The results from the computed tomography data showed that the condylar length and condylar height were significantly reduced 1 year after the operation ( P < 0.05). In addition, the morphology of the TMJ was stable, and the distance between the mandibular condyle and the glenoid fossa did not change significantly. No significant difference was observed in masseter muscle thickness before and after the operation. After mandibular angle osteotomy with outer cortex grinding, the length and height of the mandibular condyle were functionally restored without any disorders of the TMJ. Moreover, the masseter muscle exhibited stable function. With the increasing use of Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injections in the masseter muscles for both medical and aesthetic purposes, there is a constant need to continually enhance the efficacy of these treatments and reduce the risk of potential adverse events. This review provides an in-depth analysis of the masseter muscle's anatomical structure and essential landmarks and emphasizes the advantages of ultrasound (US) guidance in improving the precision of BoNT-A injections compared to conventional blind methods. The review is supplemented with comprehensive figures, including graphics, clinical images, and ultrasound visuals, to support the discussion. Potential complications such as paradoxical bulging, inadvertent injections into the risorius muscle or parotid gland, facial paralysis, and the risk of bone resorption are examined. Future research should aim at refining injection techniques and assessing the long-term effects of repeated treatments to ensure optimal patient care and safety.

(1) Background: With the increasing aesthetic pursuit of facial features, the clinical use of Botulinum Toxin Type A (BoNT-A) injections for masseter hypertrophy has been on the rise. However, due to variations in masseter muscle structure and differences in clinicians' injection techniques, blind injections may lack precision, potentially compromising treatment accuracy and increasing the risk of complications. (2) Objectives: The study aims to use ultrasonography to detail the deep inferior tendon (DIT) within the masseter muscle in a young Chinese cohort, refine its classification, analyze muscle belly thickness and variations across groups, and propose a customized ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injection protocol. (3) Methods: Ultrasound imaging was used to observe the bilateral masseter muscles at rest and during clenching. The features of the DIT were classified from these images, and the thickness of the masseter's distinct bellies associated with the DIT types was measured in both states. (4) Results: The study cohort included 103 participants (27 male, 76 female), with 30 muscles in the normal masseter group and 176 muscles in the hypertrophy group. The DIT was categorized as Type A, B (subtypes B1, B2), and C. The distribution of these types was consistent across normal, hypertrophic, and gender groups, all following the same trend (B > A > C). In hypertrophy, Type B1 showed uniform thickness across masseter bellies, B2 presented with a thinner intermediate belly, and Type C had mainly superficial muscle enlargement. Changes in muscle thickness during clenching were noted but not statistically significant among different bellies. (5) Conclusions: The study evidences individual variation in the DIT, highlighting the importance of precise DIT classification for effective BoNT-A injections. A tailored ultrasound-guided BoNT-A injection strategy based on this classification may enhance safety and efficacy of the therapy.

BACKGROUND Muscle hernias are an uncommon condition typically found in the extremities; masseter muscle hernia is even rarer. However, it is important for clinicians and radiologists to be aware of this possibility. Intramuscular venous malformation (IMVM) is also uncommon and mostly found in the head, neck, and extremities. The simultaneous presence of both conditions is extraordinary uncommon, and, to our knowledge, this has not been reported before in the masseter muscle. Due to their rarity, vague presentation, and inaccurate clinical diagnosis, radiological evaluation is needed to avoid inappropriate surgical planning. CASE REPORT A 12-year-old boy had a long-standing focal left cheek swelling exacerbated by teeth clenching. Lateral X-ray revealed a round calcification over the left mandibular region. Ultrasonography indicated a bulky left masseter muscle with focal heterogeneous structure and 2 rounded calcified foci. During teeth clenching, ultrasonography detected focal muscular herniation through the left masseter muscle facia that reduced with rest. The patient was diagnosed with left masseteric muscle hernia coexistent with IMVM. Surgical excision of the IMVM was performed, and the hernia defect was repaired. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis, and the patient was discharged without postoperative complications on short-term follow-up. CONCLUSIONS Despite their rarity, masseter hernias and IMVMs should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any masseter lesion, especially in children. We reported a very rare coexistence of both pathologies. Comprehensive diagnosis can be achieved through a combination of clinical examination, X-ray, and ultrasound assessments.

Background: The anatomic characteristics of the masticatory muscles differ across craniofacial skeletal patterns., Objective: To identify differences in the anatomic characteristics of masticatory muscles across different sagittal and vertical craniofacial skeletal patterns., Eligibility Criteria: Studies measuring the thickness, width, cross-sectional area (CSA), volume and orientation of masticatory muscles in healthy patients of different sagittal (Class I, Class II, and Class III) and/or vertical (normodivergent, hypodivergent, and hyperdivergent) patterns., Information Sources: Unrestricted literature searches in 8 electronic databases/registers until December 2023., Risk of Bias and Synthesis of Results: Study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment with a customised tool were performed independently in duplicate. Random-effects meta-analysis and assessment of the certainty of clinical recommendations with the GRADE approach were conducted., Results: 34 studies (37 publications) were selected with a total of 2047 participants and data from 16 studies were pulled in the meta-analysis. Masseter muscle thickness in relaxation was significantly greater by 1.14 mm (95% CI 0.74-1.53 mm) in hypodivergent compared to normodivergent patients while it was significantly decreased in hyperdivergent patients by - 1.14 mm (95% CI - 1.56 to - 0.73 mm) and - 2.28 mm (95% CI - 2.71 to - 1.85 mm) compared to normodivergent and hypodivergent patients respectively. Similar significant differences were seen between these groups in masseter muscle thickness during contraction as well as masseter muscle CSA and volume. Meta-analyses could not be performed for sagittal categorizations due to insufficient number of studies., Conclusions: Considerable differences in masseter muscle thickness, CSA and volume were found across vertical skeletal configurations being significantly reduced in hyperdivergent patients; however, results should be interpreted with caution due to the high risk of bias of the included studies. Purpose: Quantitative muscle ultrasound (QMUS) is a patient friendly tool for examining orofacial muscles. Resection of tissue can have an effect on the architecture and function of these muscles. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of visualizing and quantifying muscle changes in postoperative oral cancer patients and to relate the findings to tumor and patient characteristics., Methods: Adult patients with a resected first primary pT1 or T2 oral squamous cell carcinoma, at least one year post operatively, where included. Ultrasound data were collected of the geniohyoid muscle, digastric muscles, masseter muscle, transverse muscle and genioglossus muscle. Ultrasound images were labeled as clearly visible, questionable or unclear. Of the clear muscles, echogenicity and muscle thickness were measured., Results: 37 patients were included. The masseter muscle was clearly visible in all ultrasound images, both intrinsic tongue muscles had the lowest visibility (45.9%). There was a significant correlation between visibility and tumor localization for the genioglossus (p = 0.029). Age correlated with the visibility of the genioglossus muscle, BMI with the genioglossus and transverse muscles. Echogenicity and muscle thickness of the clearly identified muscles did not differ from normative values., Conclusion: QMUS of orofacial muscles is feasible in postoperative oral cancer patients with relatively small tumor sizes. Tongue resections negatively affected the visibility of the two intrinsic tongue muscles. These preliminary results for particular muscles indicate that the use of ultrasound might be promising in oral cancer patients to help determine targeted goals in post-operative rehabilitation., (© 2024. Introduction: This study aimed to determine a measurement plane that could represent the maximum cross-sectional area (MCSA) of masseter muscle using an artificial intelligence model for patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion., Methods: The study included 197 patients, divided into subgroups according to sex, mandibular symmetry, and mandibular plane angle. The volume, MCSA, and the cross-sectional area (CSA) at different levels were calculated automatically. The vertical distance between MCSA and mandibular foramen, along with the ratio of the masseter CSA at different levels to the MCSA (R), were also calculated., Results: The MCSA and volume showed a strong correlation in the total sample and each subgroup (P <0.001). The correlation between the CSA at each level and MCSA was statistically significant (P <0.001). The peak of the r and the correlation coefficient between the CSA at different levels and MCSA were mostly present 5-10 mm above the mandibular foramen for the total sample and the subgroups. The mean of R A5 to R A10 was >0.93, whereas the corresponding correlation coefficient was >0.96, both for the entire sample and for the subgroups., Conclusions: MCSA could be used as an indicator for masseter muscle size. Background: The masseteric nerve is one of the main options to neurotize free muscle flaps in irreversible long-term facial paralysis. Several preoperative skin-marking techniques for the masseteric nerve have been proposed to limit the surgical dissection area, shorten the surgical time, and enable a safer dissection. However, these have shown variability among them, and cannot visualize the nerve preoperatively. The authors designed an observational study to validate a high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) nerve identification technique., Methods: A systematic HFUS examination was designed and performed to visualize the masseteric nerve in 64 hemifaces of healthy volunteers. One-third were randomly selected to undergo an additional HFUS-guided needle electrostimulation to validate the HFUS image., Results: The masseteric nerve was identified by HFUS in 96.9% of hemifaces (95% CI, 0.89 to >0.99) and showed almost perfect agreement with direct needle stimulation as calculated with Cohen kappa coefficient (0.95; 95% CI, 0.85 to 1.00). The masseteric nerve was found within the masseter muscle, in between the deeper muscle bellies, at 18.3 mm (SD ±2.2) from the skin. Only in 12.9% of cases (95% CI, 0.06 to 0.24) did its course become adjacent to the mandible periosteum. Other important features, such as disposition in relation to the parotid gland, or if the nerve was covered directly by a thick intramuscular aponeurosis, could be well observed by HFUS., Conclusion: HFUS enables masseteric nerve identification and can provide the surgeon with specific information on anatomical relations for each examined individual before surgery., (Copyright © 2023 by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.)

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of orthognathic surgery on masseter volume in patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry and the effect of masseter volume on stability in orthognathic surgery., Methods: This research studied 16 patients with Class III malocclusion with facial asymmetry who received combined orthodontic-orthognathic treatment and underwent craniofacial computed tomography (CT) before (T0), 2 weeks after (T1), and 6 months after (T2) surgery. Three-dimensional (3D) CT images were retrospectively analyzed, using 3D volume reconstruction to obtain the masseter volume and examine the impact of the masseter volume on stability in orthognathic surgery., Results: A statistically significant difference ( P < 0.05) in the volume of the masseter was found up to 6 months after orthognathic surgery compared with the preoperative period, and the reduction in the masticatory muscle volume on the lengthened side is greater than on the shortened side ( P < 0.05). The volume of both masseters differed according to facial asymmetry, and the difference was significantly reduced after orthognathic surgery ( P < 0.05). During the period time (T1-T2), cephalometric maxillary marker points were not significantly different ( P > 0.05), and mandibular marker points were significantly anteriorly shifted ( P < 0.05). There was an association between the masseter volume and anterior shift of point B (R > 0.5, P < 0.05), the upward and anterior shifts of the gonion point differed between the lengthened and shortened sides ( P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The size of the masseter becomes smaller 6 months after orthognathic surgery, and orthognathic surgery improves both bone and soft tissue symmetry. A larger sagittal relapse of mandibular setback occurred in patients with greater masseter volume. Introduction: This study evaluated the masseter muscle changes after surgical-orthodontic treatment in patients with a skeletal Class III malocclusion using automatic segmentation., Methods: Images of 120 patients with skeletal Class III malocclusion were obtained and reconstructed at T0 (pretreatment), T1 (presurgery), and T2 (6-12-month postsurgery). The patients were divided into symmetrical and asymmetrical groups. The volume, major axis length, maximum cross-sectional area, horizontal cross-sectional area 5 mm above the mandibular foramen (CSAF), and orientation were calculated automatically., Results: In the asymmetrical group, the volume and major axis length on the deviated side were lower than on the nondeviated side at T0, T1, and T2 (P <0.05). There were no significant differences in maximum cross-sectional area and CSAF bilaterally. The orientation was coronally more vertical and sagittally more forward on the deviated side (both P <0.001). In the symmetrical group, there were no significant bilateral differences at T0, T1, and T2. The volume, major axis length, and CSAF decreased, and the coronal orientation was more vertical on the nondeviated side at T2 than at T0 in both groups (P <0.05). The coronal plane orientation was more inclined on the deviated side at T2 than at T0 in the asymmetrical group (P <0.05)., Conclusions: The smaller volume on the deviated side at T2 indicates the need for myofunctional training after surgery. The masseter muscle volume and the cross-sectional area did not recover to the preorthodontic levels. Objectives: Total tooth loss is common in the aging population resulting in insufficient chewing function with subsequent weakening of the masticatory muscles. The study aims to evaluate the changes in thicknesses of the masseter and anterior temporal muscle in edentulous patients following the reconstruction of implant-supported fixed prostheses and compare them with the dentate individuals., Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a prospective, single-center, controlled clinical trial. A total of 60 participants were included in the present study. The patients were divided into two groups; Group I (Test Group): 30 edentulous patients who received implant-supported fixed prostheses, Group II (Control Group): 30 dentate individuals of an age and sex-matched group. Ultrasonography was used to measure the cross-sectional thickness of the left and right musculus masseter and anterior temporalis immediately after the cementation of the prosthetic rehabilitation (T1), on the 1st (T2) and 6th (T3) months after rehabilitation and at a single time point in the control group., Results: The results showed that there were significant comparison differences in muscle thickness at the baseline measurements between groups while at the end of the 6th month, these differences were not significant. The muscle thicknesses of both the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles increased significantly at T2 and T3 compared to T1 in the test group. The asymmetry index between the left and right muscles in the test group and the asymmetry differences between groups also decreased significantly at the end of the 6th month., Conclusion: The implant-supported fixed prostheses significantly increase the thicknesses of the masseter and anterior temporal muscle together with a decrease in the asymmetry between the left and right muscles. Objective: The present study evaluated the in vivo musculoaponeurotic architecture of the superficial head (SH) of the masseter muscle (MM) of asymptomatic participants in excursive mandibular movements compared to the relaxed state as examined with ultrasonography. It was hypothesized that the mean fiber bundle length (FBL) and mean height of the aponeurosis (HA) of the laminae of the SH would differ significantly between the relaxed state and protrusion, ipsilateral excursion, and contralateral excursion., Study Design: The MM was studied volumetrically in 12 female and 12 male asymptomatic participants bilaterally by using ultrasound imaging. Mean FBL and HA in protrusion and ipsilateral and contralateral excursion were compared to these values in the relaxed state using paired t tests (P < .05). The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to assess intraexaminer reliability., Results: The SH exhibited multiple laminae. Fiber bundles were found to attach to bone and the superior and inferior aponeuroses. Mean FBL was significantly shorter and mean HA significantly longer in protrusion and the excursions than in the relaxed state although the pattern of altered laminae and aponeuroses differed among the mandibular movements. Intraexaminer reliability was excellent., Conclusion: Specific changes in mean FBL and mean HA suggest differential contraction of the SH of the MM based on laminar morphology. Dysfunction of the masseter muscle may cause pathological kinking of the parotid duct leading to parotitis; MR sialography is a non-invasive radiological examination that allows to evaluate dynamically the ductal system of the parotid glands. In the present study we aimed to assess the relationships between Stensen's duct and masseter muscle and their implications in the aetiopathogenesis of recurrent parotitis secondary to masseter muscle dysfunction. Forty-one patients with recurrent unilateral parotitis and nine with bilateral recurrent parotitis, all with a clinical suspicious of masseter muscle hypertrophy due to bruxism were enrolled. They underwent ultrasonography as a first line examination and then MR sialography and sialendoscopy. Different anatomical features were studied. Involved parotid glands had a wider duct compared to contralateral unaffected parotid glands of patients with recurrent parotitis (p = 0.00134); male subjects with parotitis had a longer duct compared to the salivary glands of healthy patients (p = 0.00943 for affected glands and p = 0.00629 for the contralateral). A concordance between the evidence of an acute duct angle during sialendoscopy and a wider duct in patients with parotitis was observed although not statistically significant. These initial findings suggest that the masticatory muscle dysfunction related to bruxism seems to condition alteration of parotid duct course and anatomy thus favouring the occurrence of recurrent parotitis. A specific diagnostic iter based on clinical evaluation, dynamic ultrasonography and MR sialography, is therefore, mandatory to confirm the relationship between masseter muscle anatomy and parotid duct anomalies; this is the premise for an adequate therapeutic approach to underlying masticatory muscle disorder., (© 2024. To compare masticatory muscle thickness in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) during rest and clenching, and by body position, using ultrasonography. This prospective study included 96 patients with TMD (67 females, 29 males; mean age: 40.41 ± 17.88 years): group 1, comprising 66 patients with TMD without bruxism (TMD&#95;nonbruxer), and group 2, comprising 30 patients with concurrent TMD and bruxism (TMD&#95;bruxer). In patients with TMD, bruxism was correlated with the presence of tinnitus, muscle stiffness, sleep problems, psychological stress, and restricted mouth opening. The masseter muscle significantly thickened during clenching (11.16 ± 3.03 mm vs 14.04 ± 3.47 mm, p < 0.001), whereas the temporalis muscle showed no significant increase in thickness from resting to clenching in an upright position (7.91 ± 1.98 vs 8.39 ± 2.08, p = 0.103). Similarly, during clenching in the supine position, the masseter muscle was significantly thicker compared with rest (11.24 ± 2.42 vs 13.49 ± 3.09, p < 0.001), but no significant difference was observed in temporal muscle thickness (8.21 ± 2.16 vs 8.43 ± 1.94, p = 0.464). In comparison between two groups, the average thickness of the masseter muscle was greater among TMD&#95;bruxers than among TMD&#95;nonbruxers in both the upright and supine positions (all p < 0.05). In the generalized lineal model, female sex (B = - 1.018, 95% confidence interval [CI] - 1.855 to - 0.181, p = 0.017) and bruxism (B = 0.868, 95% CI 0.567 to 1.169, p = 0.048) significantly predicted changes in masseter muscle thickness. Female sex (B = - 0.201, 95% CI - 0.299 to - 0.103, p = 0.011), increased age (B = - 0.003, 95% CI - 0.005 to 0.000, p = 0.038), and muscle stiffness (B = - 1.373, 95% CI - 2.369 to - 0.376, p = 0.007) were linked to decreased temporal muscle thickness. Comparing TMD nonbruxer and bruxer muscle thicknesses in upright and supine positions revealed significant increased thickness in the masseter muscle during clenching but not in the temporalis muscle. Masseter muscle thickness varied significantly by sex, body position, and resting/clenching, notably influenced by bruxism. Objectives: To investigate the pain perception (PP) and condyle-fossa relationship (CFR) after botulinum toxin A (BoNTA) injection in the masseter muscles of painful muscular temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD) patients., Materials and Methods: Fourteen women (aged 29.7 ± 5.4 years) diagnosed with myogenic TMD were randomized in the BoNTA-treated group (TG) and control group (CG). TG masseter muscles (n = 7) were bilaterally injected with 30 U. The CG (n = 7) were injected with saline injections. Condyle-fossa relationship (CFR) spaces were measured in sagittal (SP) and frontal planes (FP) of images of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) done before (T 0 ) and after 30 days' interventions (T 1 ). Visual analogue scale (VAS) measured the patients' TMD pain perception (PP). Data were compared by generalized linear models considering the results over time (α = .05)., Results: There were no statistical differences in CFR in the SP or FP for TG and CG over time (p ˃ .05), except for frontal lateral space CFR (p < .05). In both groups, the condyle was positioned medially after interventions. Frontal lateral space increased in TG for both, left and right sides, over time (p < .05), as well as PP decreased over time (p < .05) for TG and CG., Conclusions: The results depicted that there was no significant association with BoNTA injection in TMD masseter muscles in PP and CFR, except considering the frontal lateral space of CFR., Clinical Relevance: BoNTA injection in the masseter muscles may not promote clinically significant shifts in the condyle-fossa relationships of muscular TMD patients., (© 2023. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to prospectively investigate the reference values of masseter and temporal muscle thicknesses by ultrasonography and muscle hardness values by shear wave elastography in healthy adults., Methods: The sample of the study consisted of a total of 160 healthy individuals aged between 18 and 59, including 80 women and 80 men. By examining the right and left sides of each participant, thickness and hardness values were obtained for 320 masseter muscles and 320 temporal muscles in total., Results: The mean masseter muscle thickness was found to be 1.09 cm at rest and 1.40 cm in contraction. The mean temporal muscle thickness was found to be 0.88 cm at rest and 0.98 cm in contraction. The thickness values of the masseter and temporal muscles were significantly greater in the male participants than in the female participants (P < .001). While there were significant differences between the right and left masseter muscle thickness values at rest and in contraction, the values of the temporal muscles did not show a significant difference between the sides. While the resting hardness (rSWE) of the masseter muscle was transversally 6.91 kPa and longitudinally 8.49 kPa, these values in contraction (cSWE) were found, respectively, 31.40 and 35.65 kPa. The median temporal muscle hardness values were 8.84 kPa at rest and 20.43 kPa in contraction. Masseter and temporal muscle hardness values at rest and in contraction were significantly higher among the male participants compared to the female participants (P < .001)., Conclusion: In this study, reference values for the thickness and hardness of the masseter and temporal muscles are reported. Background: The aim of the study was to make an objective quantitative assessment of effectiveness of procedures with the use of a therapeutic dose of ultrasounds in this nosological entity, in connection with improved biomechanical properties and alleviation of pain experienced in masseter muscles., Methods: The study included 40 patients with temporomandibular disorder. In group 1 (N.=20) ultrasound therapy (1.2 W/cm 2 ) was carried out, while in group 2 (N.=20) sham therapy was applied. A total of 10 procedures were performed. Myotonometric measurements and assessment of pain intensity were carried out before treatment and after the completion of procedures., Results: The analysis revealed a significant difference (P=0.011) between the values of decrement (D) measured on day 0 (2.08±0.45 [log]) and day 4 (1.80±0.55 [log]) in group 1. In group 2 no statistically significant differences were noted between the results obtained on consecutive days of the therapeutic cycle. A statistically significant difference in values of decrement (D) between group 1 (1.80±0.55 [log]) and group 2 (2.23±0.51 [log]) was noted on day 4 of the experiment (P=0.021). Both in group 1 and in group 2, a statistically significant reduction of pain intensity (VAS Scale) was obtained., Conclusions: The masseter muscle was more elastic during ultrasound therapy. However, the effect was transient. The analgesic effect was also observed in the control group; therefore, a placebo effect cannot be excluded.

Objective: In the esthetic field, the masseter muscle is commonly targeted by botulinum neurotoxin for facial contouring. However, multiple botulinum neurotoxin injections have been reported to cause muscle fibrosis. Ultrasonography can be useful for clinical consideration in such cases., Materials and Methods: This study presents nine cases of masseteric fibrosis caused by repeated botulinum neurotoxin injections with ultrasonographic analysis of full and partial masseteric fibrosis., Results: Repetitive botulinum neurotoxin injections resulted in reduced masseter muscle volume, which frequently appeared hyperechoic on ultrasonography. The hyperechoic region was mostly located in the deep and posterior portions; however, in some cases, it was observed throughout the muscle, including the superficial, deep, or both areas., Conclusion: The fibrotic masseter muscles appear hyperechoic, and ultrasonography is necessary to analyze the degree and location of fibrosis. Predictions can be made for cases in which botulinum neurotoxin injections may have less of an effect after ultrasonography. Because muscle fibrosis can be localized, it is necessary to confirm the degree and location of fibrosis before determining the effective area of injection. Background: Sarcopenia has been identified as a potential negative prognostic factor in cancer patients. In this study, our objective was to investigate the relationship between the assessment method for sarcopenia using the masseter muscle volume measured on computed tomography (CT) images and the life expectancy of patients with oral cancer. We also developed a learning model using deep learning to automatically extract the masseter muscle volume and investigated its association with the life expectancy of oral cancer patients., Methods: To develop the learning model for masseter muscle volume, we used manually extracted data from CT images of 277 patients. We established the association between manually extracted masseter muscle volume and the life expectancy of oral cancer patients. Additionally, we compared the correlation between the groups of manual and automatic extraction in the masseter muscle volume learning model., Results: Our findings revealed a significant association between manually extracted masseter muscle volume on CT images and the life expectancy of patients with oral cancer. Notably, the manual and automatic extraction groups in the masseter muscle volume learning model showed a high correlation. Furthermore, the masseter muscle volume automatically extracted using the developed learning model exhibited a strong association with life expectancy., Conclusions: The sarcopenia assessment method is useful for predicting the life expectancy of patients with oral cancer. Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMDs) are closely related to the masticatory muscles, but objective and quantitative methods to evaluate muscle are lacking. IDEAL-IQ, a type of chemical shift-encoded magnetic resonance imaging (CSE-MRI), can quantify the fat fraction (FF). The purpose of this study was to develop an MR IDEAL-IQ-based method for quantitative muscle diagnosis in TMD patients. A total of 65 patients who underwent 3 T MRI scans, including CSE-MRI sequences, were retrospectively included. MRI diagnoses and clinical data were reviewed. There were 19 patients in the normal group and 46 patients in the TMD group with unilateral disc displacement. The TMD group was subdivided into those with and without clenching. The right and left FF values of the masseter, medial, and lateral pterygoid muscles were measured twice by two oral radiologists on CSE-MRI, and the average value was used. FF measurements using CSE-MRI showed excellent intra- and inter-observer agreement (ICC > 0.889 for both). There were no statistically significant differences between the right and left FF values in the masseter, medial pterygoid, and lateral pterygoid of the normal group (p > 0.05). A statistically significant difference was found in the TMD group without clenching, in which the masseter muscle had a statistically significantly lower FF value on the disc displacement side (3.94 ± 1.61) than on the normal side (4.52 ± 2.24) (p < 0.05). CSE-MRI, which can reproducibly quantify muscle FF values, is expected to be a biomarker for objective muscle evaluation in TMD patients. Objective: We examined changes in the mandibular angle, ramus, and condylar neck of patients with bruxism after botulinum toxin-A (BTX-A) injection into the masseter muscle as calculated with fractal analysis (FA) on panoramic radiographs (PRs)., Methods: We examined the PRs of 3 groups of 22 patients each (n = 66) obtained upon presentation and 6 months later. One group included healthy controls without bruxism, one group included patients with untreated bruxism, and one group included patients with bruxism who had undergone BTX-A injection into the masseter muscle. We performed FA of the bilateral angle, ramus, and condylar neck of the PRs to calculate fractal dimension (FD)., Results: The FD values of the angle on the second PRs of the untreated bruxism group were significantly higher than those of the other groups (P = .026), specifically when compared to the BTX-A injection group (P = .017). Microvascular reconstruction of the cheek is most often performed using fasciocutaneous flaps and without functional reconstruction of the masseter muscle. This article reports a technique of masseter muscle resection, dissection of the masseteric nerve, and masseter muscle reconstruction with a functional gracilis muscle flap. The technique was applied in a 38-year-old man with recurrent intramuscular lipoma of the right masseter muscle. The flap was highly stable in form and showed good function. Bite force, electromyography results, and the radiological appearance of the gracilis muscle were similar to those of the contralateral masseter muscle at 12 months after surgery. Introduction: The masseter muscle is one of the structures that undergoes significant changes following jaw movements in orthognathic surgery. This study aims to investigate the effects of mandibular setback surgery, performed in patients with skeletal class III deformity, on the thickness, width, elasticity index, and echogenic pattern of the masseter muscle., Material and Methods: This prospective case-control study enrolled patients with class III deformity who underwent mandibular setback surgery, while the control group consisted of class I patients. The predictor variable was the time measured at two different points: preoperative (T1) and postoperative 6 months (T2). The primary outcome variable focused on changes in the internal echogenic pattern of the masseter muscle. Secondary, tertiary, and quaternary outcome variables included changes in the thickness, width, and elasticity index of the masseter muscle, respectively. Gender, age, type of operation, and amount of movement were considered as covariates. Ultrasonography was employed to evaluate the outcome variables., Results: The study group comprised 31 patients, including 17 females (mean age 22.24 ± 3.52 years) and 14 males (mean age 23.14 ± 2.65 years). The control group consisted of 16 females (mean age 23.34 ± 1.22 years) and 15 males (mean age 23.12 ± 1.76 years). Masseter muscle thickness increased significantly after mandibular setback surgery (p = 0.015). However, there was no statistically significant difference in masseter muscle width before and after surgery (p = 0.627), nor in the elasticity index (p = 0.588). Furthermore, a statistically significant transformation from Type I to Type II was observed in the internal echogenic pattern of the muscle (p = 0.039). Purpose: To evaluate the accuracy of recording maxillomandibular position relationship with the mandibular kinesiography by surface electromyography analysis of the masticatory muscles and MRI of temporomandibular joint (TMJ)., Methods: Eight edentulous patients were selected randomly, and the maxillomandibular position relationship was determined by mandibular kinesiography and traditional method respectively. Then the corresponding bite plates were made to wear. Surface electromyography test of left and right anterior temporal and masseter muscle and magnetic resonance scan of the temporomandibular joint were performed on closed mouth position to record peak potentials, calculate asymmetric indexes, analyze the position relationship between the joint disc and the condyle, measure TMJ joint space. SPSS 18.0 software package was used for data analysis., Results: There was no significant difference in the amplitude of the anterior temporal or masseter muscle, the asymmetry index of total, asymmetry index of masseter, asymmetry index of temporalis, the anterior, upper and posterior spaces of TMJ between the mandibular kinesiography group and the traditional group (P＞0.05). The temporomandibular articular disc process relationship of the two groups were conformed to the normal physiological position relationship., Conclusions: Mandibular kinesiography could accurately record the maxillomandibular position relationship in patients with edentulous jaws.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in the thickness and internal structure of the masseter muscle in individuals with and without bruxism by ultrasonography., Materials and Methods: A total of 60 female patients with and without bruxism whose ages were ranging between 20 and 35 were included in the study. The masseter muscle thickness was measured during rest and maximum bite position. Ultrasonographic internal structure of the masseter muscle is classified according to the visibility of echogenic bands. In addition, the echogenic internal structure of the masseter muscle was evaluated with quantitative muscle ultrasound., Results: The masseter muscle thickness was significantly higher in both positions in patients with bruxism (p < 0.05). Objective: To evaluate changes in the masseter muscle after orthognathic surgery using electromyography (EMG), ultrasonography (US), and ultrasound elastography (USE) in individuals with skeletal class III anomaly over long-term follow-up and compare with a control group., Materials and Methods: The study group included 29 patients with class III dentofacial deformities scheduled to undergo orthodontic treatment and orthognathic surgery. The control group included 20 individuals with dental class I occlusion. Assessment of the masseter muscles using EMG, US, and USE was performed before orthognathic surgery (T1) and at postoperative 3 months (T2) and 1 year (T3) in the study group, and at a single time point in the control group. All assessments were performed at rest and during maximum clenching. Masseter muscle activity, dimension, and hardness were analyzed., Results: Electromyographic activity of the masseter muscle during maximum clenching was increased at postoperative 1 year but did not reach control group values. On ultrasonography, the masseter muscle showed minimal changes in dimension at postoperative 1 year compared to preoperative values and remained below control group values. The postoperative increase in masseter muscle hardness at rest and during maximum clenching persisted at postoperative 1 year., Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that after orthognathic surgery, additional interventions and much longer follow-up are needed to ensure better muscle adaptation to the new occlusion and skeletal morphology., Clinical Relevance: All assessment methods are useful for comprehensively evaluating changes in the masticatory muscles after orthognathic surgery., (© 2023. This study aims to confirm the effectiveness and safety of a prabotulinumtoxin type A (praBTX-A) injection in patients with bruxism and masseter hypertrophy. The study included patients who ground or clenched their teeth while sleeping and had computed tomography (CT) scans that showed a maximum thickness of the masseter muscle of 15 mm or more. The praBTX-A was administered bilaterally into the masseter muscles; 15 U/side for group 1, 25 U/side for group 2, and 35 U/side for group 3. CT scans and bruxism questionnaires were conducted before and eight weeks after the injection. Thirty-seven patients were enrolled, but three dropped out due to loss of follow-up. After injection, masseter thickness decreased to 15.1 ± 2.0 mm for group 1, 14.3 ± 2.9 mm for group 2, and 13.4 ± 1.8 mm for group 3 (p = 0.043). Group 3 showed a statistically significant lower masseter thickness compared to group 1 (p = 0.039). Both subjective and objective frequencies of bruxism decreased for all groups, but there were no significant differences in either subjective (p = 0.396) or objective frequencies (p = 0.87) between the groups after the injection. The results of this study suggest that praBTX-A injection is a safe and effective treatment for bruxism and masseter hypertrophy. A dosage of 35 IU/side can effectively decrease masseter thickness and relieve bruxism symptoms. Even the minimum dosage of 15 IU/side can contribute to improvements in bruxism symptoms. Background: Masseter reduction by botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT-A) injection is a popular procedure in East Asia. Inappropriate injection can result in various complications., Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop an approach for comprehensively evaluating the lower facial structure based on the shape of the mandible angle, the thickness of the masseter, and the thickness of subcutaneous fat., Methods: Clinical profiles and standard ultrasound images were collected from patients seeking masseter BoNT-A injections. Lower facial structures were evaluated based on 3 aspects: mandible, masseter, and subcutaneous fat and skin. The mandibular angle was classified as extroverted, straight, or introverted. The starting point of the middle part of the masseter was recorded. The thickness of the deep inferior tendon, the superficial and deep belly of the superficial part of the masseter, and their contractility were measured. Overall thickness and the thickness of subcutaneous fat and skin were also measured., Results: Eighty-four masseters from 42 patients were included. Straight mandibular angles were the most common type of angle (48.81%), followed by introverted (26.19%) and extroverted angles (25.00%). The middle part of the masseter starts from 2.33 [0.36] cm (mean [standard deviation]) above the mandible edge, which is above the usual injection points. The superficial belly was thicker than the deep belly in both static and clenching states (P = .048, P = .001) and had greater contractility. The average overall thickness was 1.87 [0.29] cm., Conclusions: Comprehensive evaluation of the lower facial contour and structure based on ultrasound examination could be a reliable and replicable assessment approach., (© The Author(s) 2022. Objective: To compare the masseter muscle thickness (MMT) of patients with probable sleep/awake bruxism and controls without bruxism in mixed dentition as measured with ultrasonography (USG), and to calculate the correlation of MMT with body mass index (BMI)., Study Design: The diagnosis of probable bruxism was established based on the parents' reports of the children's behavior, habits, and discomfort, and the presence of clinical signs and symptoms such as attrition-type wear on the teeth and the presence of discomfort, fatigue, and/or pain in the jaw muscles on palpation during clinical examination. The bruxist study group and the control group each included 28 children. MMT was measured separately in relaxed and contracted positions in both groups using USG. The height and weight of the patients were recorded in order to calculate BMI. Statistical analysis was performed with significance established at P < .05., Results: MMT was found to be significantly larger in the study patients than in controls on the right and left sides in the relaxed and contracted positions (P < .001). No statistically significant correlation was found between MMT and BMI (P ≥ .134)., Conclusions: MMT as measured with USG can be a beneficial approach in diagnosing bruxism in children. Introduction: Sonoelastography has been increasingly used for non-invasive evaluation of the mechanical features of human tissues. The interplay between orofacial pain and regional muscle activity appears clinically paramount, although only few imaging studies have investigated this association. Using shear wave sonoelastography (SWS), this study ascertained whether orofacial pain induced alterations in the stiffness of superficial and deep masticatory muscles., Methods: All participants were systematically evaluated for oral/facial-related conditions, including the area and intensity of pain. SWS was applied to measure the stiffness of the bilateral masseter, temporalis, and lateral pterygoid muscles. The association between orofacial pain and muscle stiffness/thickness was investigated using a generalized estimating equation for adjusting the influence of age, sex, laterality, and body mass index on muscle thickness/stiffness., Results: A total of 98 participants were included in the present study: 48 asymptomatic controls, 13 patients with unilateral pain, and 37 patients with bilateral orofacial pain. The reliability, quantified by the intraclass correlation coefficient for muscle stiffness measurement, ranged from 0.745 to 0.893. Orofacial pain at the individual muscle level was significantly associated with masseter muscle stiffness. A trend of increased stiffness ( p  = 0.06) was also observed in relation to the painful side of the temporalis muscle. No significant correlation was identified between the numeric rating scales for pain and stiffness measurements., Conclusions: SWS provides reliable stiffness measurements for the superficial and deep masticatory muscles. The ipsilateral masseter and temporalis muscles might be stiffer than those on the side without orofacial pain. Future studies using the present sonoelasotography protocol can be designed to investigate the stiffness changes in the target muscles after interventions.

Objective: To evaluate occlusal splint type differences in patients with bruxism., Methods: Seventeen controls and 51 patients were divided into three subgroups, each assigned to use a different occlusal splint (hard, soft, or semi-soft) for 3 months and assessed by ultrasonography and electromyography (EMG) before (BT) and 3 months after treatment (AT)., Results: EMG values in all of the occlusal splint groups were significantly lower AT than BT ( p < 0.05). BT and AT EMG values in the control group did not differ. Mean muscle thicknesses in bruxism patients was greater than in controls, and the greatest muscle thickness changes occurred with the hard occlusal splint ( p < 0.05)., Discussion: A decrease in EMG activity occurred with all three splint types and was most prominent in the hard occlusal splint group. Ultrasonographic measurements of muscle length and thickness should be used alongside EMG to measure muscle activity in bruxism patients.

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the normal range of masseter muscle thickness by ultrasonographic measurement in individuals over 15 years of age, and to evaluate its relationship with age, gender, facial morphology, body mass index and parafunctional habits., Methods: The study was conducted on 115 volunteers whose lateral cephalometric radiography was performed within the indication in Gazi University Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Dentomaxillofacial Radiology. The participants in the study were asked questions about their parafunctional habits, age, height and weight. Individuals were grouped as hypodivergent ( n = 28), normdivergent ( n = 55), or hyperdivergent ( n = 32) according to vertical face morphology by making measurements on lateral cephalometric films. Right and left masseter muscle thicknesses of individuals were measured by ultrasonography while at rest and in contraction., Results: The mean value of masseter muscle thickness was found to be 13.57 ± 2.57 mm. The rest and contracted muscle thicknesses were significantly higher in males than in females for the right and left masseter muscles ( p < 0.05). When the masseter muscle was at rest and contracted, its thickness was higher in individuals with hypodivergent facial morphology, than in the other groups. No statistically significant difference was found in terms of masseter muscle thickness between individuals having parafunctional habits and those who did not have parafunctional habits ( p > 0.05)., Conclusion: Although masseter muscle thickness varied according to vertical facial morphology, this was not the case for parafunctional habits.

The advent of clinical trials in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) necessitates the identification of reliable outcome measures to quantify different disease manifestations using minimal number of assessments. In this study, clinical correlations of mean masseter volume (mMV) were explored to evaluate its potential as a marker of muscle involvement in adult-onset DM1 patients. We utilised data from a preceding study, pertaining to 39 DM1 patients and 20 age-matched control participants. In this study participants had undergone MRI of the brain, completed various clinical outcome measures and had CTG repeats measured by small-pool PCR. Manual segmentation of masseter muscles was performed by a single rater to estimate mMV. The masseter muscle was atrophied in DM1 patients when compared to controls (p<0.001). Significant correlations were found between mMV and estimated progenitor allele length (p = 0.001), modal allele length (p = 0.003), disease duration (p = 0.009) and and the Muscle Impairment Rating Scale (p = 0.008). After correction for lean body mass, mMV was also inversely correlated with self-reported myotonia (p = 0.014). This study demonstrates that changes in mMV are sensitive in reflecting the underlying disease process. Background: Decreased masticatory function contributes to malnutrition in the elderly. The purpose of our study was to explore whether the masseter muscle is involved in masticatory function in older adults and to help determine if the masticatory function of the elderly can be improved by exercising the masseter muscle., Methods: Random sampling was adopted in our research, and a total of 413 older adults from 9 nursing homes in China were recruited from March 10 to June 12, 2022. The thickness and echo intensity of their masseter muscles were assessed using ultrasound. Masticatory function was measured using a color-changing chewing gum, and the change of α* before and after chewing (Δα*) was defined as masticatory function. If Δα* <14.2 in males or <10.8 in females was masticatory dysfunction. Their number of molar occlusal supports (MOSN), comorbidity, oral diadochokinesis (ODK), maximum tongue pressure (MTP), and calf circumference (CC) were evaluated. Multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the factors independently associated with the masticatory function., Results: Of the 413 older adults, 179 (43.3%) had masticatory dysfunction. The average thickness of the masseter muscle between contraction and relaxation was 1.3 mm (range, 0.7-2.0 mm). The thickness of the masseter muscle and ODK decreased with age, while the echo intensity of the masseter muscle increased. The results of the multiple linear regression analysis showed that dynamic change in the thickness of the masseter muscle between contraction and relaxation (β=0.085; P=0.049), MTP (β=0.147; P=0.001) and MOSN (β=0.349; P<0.001), brushing teeth ≥2 times/day (β=-0.187; P<0.001), and CC (β=0.135; P=0.002) were independent factors affecting masticatory function., Conclusions: We found that masticatory dysfunction was prevalent among older adults in nursing homes in Southwest China, and the dynamic change in the thickness of the masseter muscle between contraction and relaxation was positively correlated with masticatory function. This result suggests that we can improve the masticatory function of the elderly by increasing the thickness of the masseter muscle between contraction and relaxation (e.g., by exercising the masseter).

Purpose: Oral frailty is characterized by a decrease in the oral and swallowing function and is a risk factor for pneumonia. In the current study, we analyzed the association between the masseter muscle thickness (MMT) and postoperative pneumonia and mortality after endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for abdominal aortic aneurysm., Methods: Overall, 247 patients were retrospectively evaluated. The primary end point was postoperative pneumonia. The MMT was measured as the maximum thickness of the masseter muscle 2 cm caudal to the zygomatic arch using computed tomography images obtained within 3 months before EVAR. Pneumonia was defined as the presence of progressive infiltrates, consolidation, or cavitation on imaging and a fever or leukocytosis., Results: Twenty (8.1%) cases of postoperative pneumonia occurred within 1 year after EVAR. We found that patients with a low MMT (≤ 30th percentile: males, 10.4 mm; females: 8.8 mm) had a significantly higher risk of developing postoperative pneumonia within 1 year after elective EVAR than those with a high value. A comparison of the utility of the MMT and psoas muscle index (PMI) for predicting the 1-, 3-, and 5-year all-cause mortality revealed that the MMT had superior predictive performance., Conclusion: The MMT before elective EVAR predicted postoperative pneumonia and life expectancy, and its predictive performance was superior to that of the PMI., (© 2022. Background: Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) injection is a popular cosmetic procedure in East Asian countries, and there are multiple types of toxins on the market. Whether different toxin types induce different changes in the masseter has not been studied., Objective: We aimed to investigate and compare the changes induced by injection of different types of BoNT-A in the masseter., Methods: Upon retrospective review of clinical records and routine ultrasound examination results of patients who underwent BoNT-A injection, four groups were set for comparison: unapproved toxin, OnabotulinumtoxinA, LanbotulinumtoxinA, and non-injected. Clinical records and ultrasound images were collected. Ultrasound images were taken in both horizontal and coronal planes. Elasticity of the masseter muscle was also investigated by measuring the surface wave speed., Results: A total of 24 patients were included (six patients per group). All patients were young females. For the non-injected group, the deep inferior tendon was clear and the muscle bundles were arranged, with little fibrous content. Patients who received unapproved toxin injection showed highly disarranged muscle and fiber bundles, with much fiber content present. The changes in OnabotulinumtoxinA and LanbotulinumtoxinA groups were in between those in the non-injected and unapproved toxin groups. Muscle rigidity was the highest in the unapproved toxin group, and generally higher in injected groups compared with the non-injected group., Conclusion: Different types of BoNT-A may induce different changes in the masseter., (© 2022 Wiley Periodicals LLC.)

Primary trigeminal neuralgia (PTN) is characterized by chronic neuropathic pain. There are few studies exploring masticatory muscle changes in patients with PTN. This study evaluated the changes in the masticatory muscles using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and the predictive factors of masticatory muscle changes in patients with PTN. The radiologic outcomes of 52 patients with PTN and 58 healthy adults were evaluated. The temporalis, lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid, and masseter muscles were assessed using MRI. Atrophy and edema of the masticatory muscles were noted. Multivariate analyses were conducted to identify factors associated with masticatory muscle atrophy. Among the PTN group, the right side (61.5%) and mandibular branch (53.9%) were the most affected. Muscle atrophy of the temporalis (P < .001), medial pterygoid (P = .016), lateral pterygoid (P = .031), and masseter (P = .001) were significantly higher in the PTN group than in the control group. Lateral pterygoid edema was significantly higher in the PTN group (P < .001). However, no significant difference was found in the temporalis and masseter edema between the two groups. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that neurovascular conflict (NVC) significantly predicted mastication muscle atrophy (P = .037). Patients with PTN had higher rates of masticatory muscle atrophy and edema. Background: Previous clinical observational studies have suggested that orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is related, at least partly, to the mass and/or capabilities of the masticatory muscles., Objectives: Our study aimed to examine the influence of masticatory muscle mass on the OTM in an animal experimental model in which the masseter muscle was modulated by botulinum neurotoxin type A (BTX) injection., Methods: Eighteen Wistar rats were equally divided into two groups: BTX injection and control. BTX was injected bilaterally into the masseter muscles. Three days after the injection, the maxillary left first molars were orthodontically moved for 14 days. At the end of the experiment, micro-computed tomography was performed to evaluate the rate of OTM and bone morphometry. The masseter muscles were weighed and prepared for histological analyses., Results: The masseter muscle mass in the BTX group was less than that in the control group, and histological findings showed atrophy of muscle fibres. The rate of OTM was significantly higher in the BTX group than in the control group. Furthermore, a negative correlation was detected between masseter muscle mass and OTM in the BTX group. Bone morphometry showed no difference between the control and BTX groups., Conclusion: Decreased masseter muscle mass was found to be closely related to an increase in the rate of OTM in rats using BTX injection to modify the masseter muscle mass. Purpose: A limited number of clinical studies have focused on the changing trends of facial soft tissue after mandibular angle ostectomy. We conducted this study to investigate the changes in facial muscles and facial soft tissue appearance before and after mandibular angle ostectomy., Material and Methods: A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted on female patients admitted to our hospital for mandibular angle ostectomy between 2019 and 2020. The primary predictor variable was time (preoperative vs 6 months postoperative). The primary outcome variables were surface area and total volume of the manually delineated region of interest (ROI) for the masseter and temporalis muscles. We utilized computed tomography data to reconstruct 3-dimensional models to delineate muscle ROI and then measure them computationally. Secondary outcome variables were indicators of mandible appearance in soft tissue including bilateral mandibular angle distance, mandibular ramus height, and mandibular angle value. Age, preoperative body mass index, and ostectomy volume were chosen as covariates for correlation analysis with outcome variables. Paired t tests and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted, and P values < .05 were considered statistically significant., Results: A total of 29 female patients (mean age, 26 years; range, 18 to 37 years) who underwent mandibular angle ostectomy in our hospital were included. The surface area and total volume of the masseter muscle ROI were reduced by 2,541.2 ± 1,925.0 mm 2 (12.8%; P < .05) and 16,242.4 ± 12,646.8 mm 3 (18.4%; P < .05), respectively, 6 months after surgery. In contrast, the surface area and total volume of the temporalis muscle ROI increased by 6,081.6 ± 6,169.4 mm 2 (12.0%; P < .05) and 19,273.3 ± 21,666.2 mm 3 (10.7%; P < .05), respectively. The ostectomy volume showed a correlation coefficient of 0.59 with postoperative masseter ROI change (P < .05)., Conclusion: We observed statistically significant levels of atrophy of the masseter muscle ROI and expansion of the temporalis muscle ROI 6 months after mandibular angle ostectomy, which may account for appearance changes after surgery. Besides, ostectomy volume positively correlates with postoperative masseter ROI changes. Background: The purpose of the current study was to investigate factors related to morphological changes in the masseter muscle after preoperative orthodontic treatment in patients with skeletal class III dentofacial deformities for analysis of muscle changes and malocclusions., Methods: Twenty female patients with dentofacial deformities were included in the study. Computed tomography was performed before and after preoperative orthodontic treatment, and the lengths, widths, and cross-sectional areas of the masseter muscles were measured. Changes in these parameters were evaluated, and factors related to changes in masseter muscle area after preoperative orthodontic treatment were analyzed., Results: The lengths, widths, and areas of masseter muscles were significantly smaller after preoperative orthodontic treatment. Smaller masseter muscle area was significantly associated with changes in overbite and pretreatment values of SNA angle., Conclusions: Atrophy of the masseter muscle during preoperative orthodontic treatment was greater in patients with increased open bite due to improved dental compensation in patients with skeletal class III dentofacial deformities with maxillary retraction., (© 2022.
