The spatial structure of in-gap Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) bound states induced by a magnetic impurity in a superconductor is the essential ingredient for the possibility of engineering collective impurity states. Recently, a saddle-point approximation [Phys. Rev. B 105, 144503] revealed how the spatial form of a YSR state is controlled by an anisotropic exponential decay length, and an anisotropic prefactor, which depends on the Fermi velocity and Fermi-surface curvature. Here we analyze STM data on YSR states in NbSe$_2$, focusing on a key issue that the exponential decay length predicted theoretically from the small superconducting gap is much larger than the observed extent of YSR states. We confirm that the exponential decay can be neglected in the analysis of the anisotropy. Instead, we extract the anisotropic prefactor directly from the data, matching it to the theoretical prediction, and we establish that the theoretical expression for the prefactor alone captures the characteristic flower-like shape of the YSR state. Surprisingly, we find that up to linear order in the superconducting gap the anisotropic prefactor that determines the shape of YSR states is the same as the anisotropic response to the impurity in the underlying normal metal. Our work points out the correct way to analyze STM data on impurities in small-gap superconductors, and reveals the importance of the normal band structure's curvature and Fermi velocity in designing multi-impurity in-gap states in superconductors., Comment: 5+5 pages, 3+4 figures

Structural distortions and imperfections are a crucial aspect of materials science, on the macroscopic scale providing strength, but also enhancing corrosion and reducing electrical and thermal conductivity. At the nanometre scale, multi-atom imperfections, such as atomic chains and crystalline domain walls have conversely been proposed as a route to topological superconductivity, whose most prominent characteristic is the emergence of Majorana Fermions that can be used for error-free quantum computing. Here, we shed more light on the nature of purported domain walls in Fe(Se,Te) that may host 1D dispersing Majorana modes. We show that the displacement shift of the atomic lattice at these line-defects results from sub-surface impurities that warp the topmost layer(s). Using the electric field between the tip and sample, we manage to reposition the sub-surface impurities, directly visualizing the displacement shift and the underlying defect-free lattice. These results, combined with observations of a completely different type of 1D defect where superconductivity remains fully gapped, highlight the topologically trivial nature of 1D defects in Fe(Se,Te)., Comment: Main text and Supplementary Information

Understanding the interplay between individual magnetic impurities and superconductivity is crucial for bottom-up construction of novel phases of matter. For decades, the description by Yu, Shiba and Rusinov (YSR) of single spins in a superconductor and its extension to include quantum effects has proven highly successful: the pair-breaking potential of the spin generates sub-gap electron- and hole excitations that are energetically equidistant from zero. By tuning the energy of the sub-gap states through zero, the impurity screening by the superconductor makes the ground state gain or lose an electron, signalling a parity breaking quantum phase transition. Here we show that in multi-orbital impurities, correlations between the in-gap states can conversely lead to a quantum phase transition where more than one electron simultaneously leave the impurity without significant effect of the screening by the superconductor, while the parity may remain unchanged. This finding implies that the YSR treatment is not always valid, and that intra-atomic interactions, particularly Hund's coupling that favours high spin configurations, are an essential ingredient for understanding the sub-gap states. The interaction-driven quantum phase transition should be taken into account for impurity-based band-structure engineering, and may provide a fruitful basis in the search for novel physics., Comment: Main text and supplementary

Visualizing atomic-orbital degrees of freedom is a frontier challenge in scanned microscopy. Some types of orbital order are virtually imperceptible to normal scattering techniques because they do not reduce the overall crystal lattice symmetry. A good example is dxz/dyz ({\pi},{\pi}) orbital order in tetragonal lattices. For enhanced detectability, here we consider the quasiparticle scattering interference (QPI) signature of such ({\pi},{\pi}) orbital order in both normal and superconducting phases. The theory reveals that sublattice-specific QPI signatures generated by the orbital order should emerge strongly in the superconducting phase. Sublattice-resolved QPI visualization in superconducting CeCoIn5 then reveals two orthogonal QPI patterns at lattice-substitutional impurity atoms. We analyze the energy dependence of these two orthogonal QPI patterns and find the intensity peaked near E=0, as predicted when such ({\pi}) orbital order is inte,{\pi}rtwined with d-wave superconductivity. The pair breaking potential of individual magnetic impurities in s-wave superconductors generates localized states inside the superconducting gap commonly referred to as Yu- Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) states whose isolated nature makes them ideal building blocks for artificial structures that may host Majorana fermions. One of the challenges in this endeavor is to understand their intrinsic lifetime, $\hbar/\Lambda$, which is expected to be limited by the inelastic coupling with the continuum thus leading to decoherence. Here we use shot-noise scanning tunneling microscopy to reveal that electron tunnelling into superconducting 2H-NbSe$_2$ mediated by YSR states is ordered as function of time, as evidenced by a reduction of the noise. Moreover, our data show the concomitant transfer of charges e and 2e, indicating that incoherent single particle and coherent Andreev processes operate simultaneously. From the quantitative agreement between experiment and theory we obtain $\Lambda$ = 1 $\mu$eV $\ll$ $k_BT$ demonstrating that shot-noise can probe energy- and time scales inaccessible by conventional spectroscopy whose resolution is thermally limited., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information included as ancillary file

The ability to manipulate individual atoms and molecules using a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) has been crucial for the development of a vast array of atomic scale devices and structures ranging from nanoscale motors and switches to quantum corrals. Molecular motors in particular have attracted considerable attention in view of their potential for assembly into complex nanoscale machines. Whereas the manipulated atoms or molecules are usually on top of a substrate, motors embedded in a lattice can be very beneficial for bottom-up construction, and may additionally be used to probe the in uence of the lattice on the electronic properties of the host material. Here, we present the discovery of controlled manipulation of a rotor in Fe doped Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$. We find that the current into the rotor, which can be finely tuned with the voltage, drives omni-directional switching between three equivalent orientations, each of which can be frozen in at small bias voltage. Single atom manipulation within doped correlated electron systems would be highly beneficial to disentangle the influence of dopants, structural defects and crystallographic characteristics on their local electronic states. Unfortunately, their high diffusion barrier prevents conventional manipulation techniques. Here, we demonstrate the possibility to reversibly manipulate select sites in the optimally doped high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$ using the local electric field of the tip. We show that upon shifting individual Bi atoms at the surface, the spectral gap associated with superconductivity is seen to reversibly change by as much as 15 meV (~5% of the total gap size). Detailed understanding of the role of single dopant atoms in host materials has been crucial for the continuing miniaturization in the semiconductor industry as local charging and trapping of electrons can completely change the behaviour of a device. Similarly, as dopants can turn a Mott insulator into a high temperature superconductor, their electronic behaviour at the atomic scale is of much interest. Due to limited time resolution of conventional scanning tunnelling microscopes, most atomic scale studies in these systems focussed on the time averaged effect of dopants on the electronic structure. Here, by using atomic scale shot-noise measurements in the doped Mott insulator Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$, we visualize sub-nanometer sized objects where remarkable dynamics leads to an enhancement of the tunnelling current noise by at least an order of magnitude. From the position, current and energy dependence we argue that these defects are oxygen dopant atoms that were unaccounted for in previous scanning probe studies, whose local environment leads to charge dynamics that strongly affect the tunnelling mechanism. The unconventional behaviour of these dopants opens up the possibility to dynamically control doping at the atomic scale, enabling the direct visualization of the effect of local charging on e.g. high T$_{\text{c}}$ superconductivity., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information included as ancillary file

We have developed a broadband scanning tunnelling microscope capable of conventional, low frequency (<10 kHz), microscopy as well spectroscopy and shot-noise detection at 1 MHz. After calibrating our AC circuit on a gold surface, we illustrate our capability to detect shot-noise at the atomic scale and at low currents (<1 nA) by simultaneously measuring the atomically resolved differential conductance and shot-noise on the high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$. We further show our direct sensitivity to the temperature of the tunnelling electrons at low voltages. Our broadband probe opens up the possibility to study charge and correlation effects at the atomic scale in all materials accessible to STM.

Tunnel junctions, a well-established platform for high-resolution spectroscopy of superconductors, require defect-free insulating barriers with clean engagement to metals on both sides. Extending the range of materials accessible to tunnel junction fabrication, beyond the limited selection which allows high-quality oxide formation, requires the development of alternative fabrication techniques. Here we show that van-der-Waals (vdW) tunnel barriers, fabricated by stacking layered semiconductors on top of the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) superconductor NbSe$_2$, sustain a stable, low noise tunneling current, and exhibit strong suppression of sub-gap tunneling. We utilize the technique to measure the spectra of bulk (20 nm) and ultrathin (3- and 4-layer) devices at 70 mK. The spectra exhibit two distinct energy gaps, the larger of which decreases monotonously with thickness and $T_C$, in agreement with BCS theory. The spectra are analyzed using a two-band model modified to account for depairing. We show that in the bulk, the smaller gap exhibits strong depairing in an in-plane magnetic field, consistent with a high Fermi velocity. In the few-layer devices, depairing of the large gap is negligible, consistent with out-of-plane spin-locking due to Ising spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate that the differential conductance, $dI/dV$, measured via spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy in the doped iron chalcogenide FeSe$_{0.45}$Te$_{0.55}$, possesses a series of characteristic features that allow one to extract the orbital structure of the superconducting gaps. This yields nearly isotropic superconducting gaps on the two hole-like Fermi surfaces, and a strongly anisotropic gap on the electron-like Fermi surface. Moreover, we show that the pinning of nematic fluctuations by defects can give rise to a dumbbell-like spatial structure of the induced impurity bound states, and explains the related $C_2$-symmetry in the Fourier transformed differential conductance., Comment: 5 pages + 4 figures, SI: 6 pages + 3 figures

Device-based tunnel spectroscopy of superconductors was first performed by Giaever, whose seminal work provided clear evidence for the spectral gap in the density of states (DOS) predicted by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory. Since then, tunnel-barrier-based heterostructure devices have revealed myriad physical phenomena and found a range of applications. Most of these devices rely on a limited number of oxides, which form high-quality insulating, non-magnetic barriers. These barriers, however, do not grow well on all surfaces. Promising alternatives are van der Waals (vdW) materials, ultrathin layers of which can be precisely positioned on many surfaces; they have been shown to form tunnel barriers when engaged with graphene. Here we demonstrate that vdW semiconductors MoS$_2$ and WSe$_2$ deposited on the superconductor NbSe$_2$ form high quality tunnel barriers, with transparencies in the $10^{-8}$ range. Our measurements of the NbSe$_2$ DOS at 70mK show a hard superconducting gap, and a quasiparticle peak structure with clear evidence of contributions from two bands, with intrinsic superconductivity in both bands. In both perpendicular and parallel magnetic fields, we observe a sub-gap DOS associated with vortex bound states. The linear dependence of the zero-bias signal on perpendicular field allows us to confirm the s-wave nature of superconductivity in NbSe$_2$. As vdW tunnel barriers can be deployed on many solid surfaces, they extend the range of superconducting and other materials addressable not only by high resolution tunneling spectroscopy but also non-equilibrium and/or non-local transport.

Strong electron correlations in rare earth hexaborides can give rise to a variety of interesting phenomena like ferromagnetism, Kondo hybridization, mixed valence, superconductivity and possibly topological characteristics. The theoretical prediction of topological properties in SmB$_{6}$ and YbB$_{6}$, has rekindled the scientific interest in the rare earth hexaborides, and high-resolution ARPES has been playing a major role in the debate. The electronic band structure of the hexaborides contains the key to understand the origin of the different phenomena observed, and much can be learned by comparing the experimental data from different rare earth hexaborides. We have performed high-resolution ARPES on the (001) surfaces of YbB$_{6}$, CeB$_{6}$ and SmB$_{6}$. On the most basic level, the data show that the differences in the valence of the rare earth element are reflected in the experimental electronic band structure primarily as a rigid shift of the energy position of the metal 5$\textit{d}$ states with respect to the Fermi level. Although the overall shape of the $\textit{d}$-derived Fermi surface contours remains the same, we report differences in the dimensionality of these states between the compounds studied. Moreover, the spectroscopic fingerprint of the 4$\textit{f}$ states also reveals considerable differences that are related to their coherence and the strength of the $\textit{d}$-$\textit{f}$ hybridization. For the SmB$_6$ case, we use ARPES in combination with STM imaging and electron diffraction to reveal time dependent changes in the structural symmetry of the highly debated SmB$_{6}$(001) surface. All in all, our study highlights the suitability of electron spectroscopies like high-resolution ARPES to provide links between electronic structure and function in complex and correlated materials such as the rare earth hexaborides., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Maximizing the sustainable supercurrent density, Jc, is crucial to high current applications of superconductivity and, to achieve this, preventing dissipative motion of quantized vortices is key. Irradiation of superconductors with high-energy heavy ions can be used to create nanoscale defects that act as deep pinning potentials for vortices. This approach holds unique promise for high current applications of iron-based superconductors because Jc amplification persists to much higher radiation doses than in cuprate superconductors without significantly altering the superconducting critical temperature. However, for these compounds virtually nothing is known about the atomic scale interplay of the crystal damage from the high-energy ions, the superconducting order parameter, and the vortex pinning processes. Here, we visualize the atomic-scale effects of irradiating FeSexTe1-x with 249 MeV Au ions and find two distinct effects: compact nanometer-sized regions of crystal disruption or 'columnar defects', plus a higher density of single atomic-site 'point' defects probably from secondary scattering. We show directly that the superconducting order is virtually annihilated within the former while suppressed by the latter. Simultaneous atomically-resolved images of the columnar crystal defects, the superconductivity, and the vortex configurations, then reveal how a mixed pinning landscape is created, with the strongest pinning occurring at metallic-core columnar defects and secondary pinning at clusters of pointlike defects, followed by collective pinning at higher fields., Comment: Main text (14 pages, 5 figures) and supplementary information (6 pages, 7 figures)

To identify the microscopic mechanism of heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is an unresolved challenge in quantum matter studies; it may also relate closely to finding the pairing mechanism of high temperature superconductivity. Magnetically mediated Cooper pairing has long been the conjectured basis of heavy-fermion superconductivity but no direct verification of this hypothesis was achievable. Here, we use a novel approach based on precision measurements of the heavy-fermion band structure using quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging, to reveal quantitatively the momentum-space (k-space) structure of the f-electron magnetic interactions of CeCoIn5. Then, by solving the superconducting gap equations on the two heavy-fermion bands $E_k^{\alpha,\beta}$ with these magnetic interactions as mediators of the Cooper pairing, we derive a series of quantitative predictions about the superconductive state. The agreement found between these diverse predictions and the measured characteristics of superconducting CeCoIn5, then provides direct evidence that the heavy-fermion Cooper pairing is indeed mediated by the f-electron magnetism., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, Supplementary Information: 31 pages, 5 figures

Cooper pairing in the iron-based high-Tc superconductors is often conjectured to involve bosonic fluctuations. Among the candidates are antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations and d-orbital fluctuations amplified by phonons. Any such electron-boson interaction should alter the electron's `self-energy', and then become detectable through consequent modifications in the energy dependence of the electron's momentum and lifetime. Here we introduce a theoretical/experimental approach aimed at identifying the relevant fluctuations of iron-based superconductors by measuring effects of their self-energy. We use quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging techniques in LiFeAs to reveal strongly momentum-space anisotropic self-energy signatures that are focused along the Fe-Fe (interband scattering) direction, where the spin fluctuations of LiFeAs are concentrated. These effects coincide in energy with perturbations to the density-of-states N(\omega) usually associated with the Cooper pairing interaction. We show that all the measured phenomena comprise the predicted QPI `fingerprint' of a self-energy due to antiferromagnetic spin-fluctuations, thereby distinguishing them as the predominant electron-boson interaction.

The Cooper pairing mechanism of heavy-fermion superconductors, while long hypothesized as due to spin fluctuations, has not been determined. It is the momentum space (k-space) structure of the superconducting energy gap delta(k) that encodes specifics of this pairing mechanism. However, because the energy scales are so low, it has not been possible to directly measure delta(k) for any heavy-fermion superconductor. Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference (QPI) imaging, a proven technique for measuring the energy gaps of high-Tc superconductors, has recently been proposed as a new method to measure delta(k) in heavy-fermion superconductors, specifically CeCoIn5. By implementing this method, we immediately detect a superconducting energy gap whose nodes are oriented along k||(+-1, +-1)pi/a0 directions. Moreover, we determine the complete k-space structure of the delta(k) of a heavy-fermion superconductor. For CeCoIn5, this novel information includes: the complex band structure and Fermi surface of the hybridized heavy bands, the fact that highest magnitude delta(k) opens on a high-k band so that gap nodes occur at quite unanticipated k-space locations, and that the Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference patterns are most consistent with dx2-y2 gap symmetry. The availability of such quantitative heavy band- and gap-structure data will be critical in identifying the microscopic mechanism of heavy fermion superconductivity in this material, and perhaps in general., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information

A combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of the archetypal oxide heterointerface system LaAlO3 on SrTiO3 is presented. High-resolution, hard x-ray photoemission is used to uncover the occupation of Ti 3d states and the relative energetic alignment - and hence internal electric fields - within the LaAlO3 layer. Firstly, the Ti 2p core level spectra clearly show occupation of Ti 3d states already for two unit cells of LaAlO3. Secondly, the LaAlO3 core levels were seen to shift to lower binding energy as the LaAlO3 overlayer thickness, n, was increased - agreeing with the expectations from the canonical electron transfer model for the emergence of conductivity at the interface. However, not only is the energy offset of only 300meV between n=2 (insulating interface) and n=6 (metallic interface) an order of magnitude smaller than the simple expectation, but it is also clearly not the sum of a series of unit-cell by unit-cell shifts within the LaAlO3 block. Both of these facts argue against the simple charge-transfer picture involving a cumulative shift of the LaAlO3 valence bands above the SrTiO3 conduction bands, resulting in charge transfer only for n>3. Turning to the theoretical data, our density functional simulations show that the presence of oxygen vacancies at the LaAlO3 surface at the 25% level reverses the direction of the internal field in the LaAlO3. Therefore, taking the experimental and theoretical results together, a consistent picture emerges for real-life samples in which nature does not wait until n=4 and already for n=2, mechanisms other than internal-electric-field-driven electron transfer from idealized LaAlO3 to near-interfacial states in the SrTiO3 substrate are active in heading off the incipient polarization catastrophe that drives the physics in these systems., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Iron-based high temperature superconductivity develops when the `parent' antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic phase is suppressed, typically by introduction of dopant atoms. But their impact on atomic-scale electronic structure, while in theory quite complex, is unknown experimentally. What is known is that a strong transport anisotropy with its resistivity maximum along the crystal b-axis, develops with increasing concentration of dopant atoms; this `nematicity' vanishes when the `parent' phase disappears near the maximum superconducting Tc. The interplay between the electronic structure surrounding each dopant atom, quasiparticle scattering therefrom, and the transport nematicity has therefore become a pivotal focus of research into these materials. Here, by directly visualizing the atomic-scale electronic structure, we show that substituting Co for Fe atoms in underdoped Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 generates a dense population of identical anisotropic impurity states. Each is ~8 Fe-Fe unit cells in length, and all are distributed randomly but aligned with the antiferromagnetic a-axis. By imaging their surrounding interference patterns, we further demonstrate that these impurity states scatter quasiparticles in a highly anisotropic manner, with the maximum scattering rate concentrated along the b-axis. These data provide direct support for the recent proposals that it is primarily anisotropic scattering by dopant-induced impurity states that generates the transport nematicity; they also yield simple explanations for the enhancement of the nematicity proportional to the dopant density and for the occurrence of the highest resistivity along the b-axis.

The exact nature of the low temperature electronic phase of the manganite materials family, and hence the origin of their colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) effect, is still under heavy debate. By combining new photoemission and tunneling data, we show that in La{2-2x}Sr{1+2x}Mn2O7 the polaronic degrees of freedom win out across the CMR region of the phase diagram. This means that the generic ground state is that of a system in which strong electron-lattice interactions result in vanishing coherent quasi-particle spectral weight at the Fermi level for all locations in k-space. The incoherence of the charge carriers offers a unifying explanation for the anomalous charge-carrier dynamics seen in transport, optics and electron spectroscopic data. The pseudogap state is one of the peculiarities of the cuprate high temperature superconductors. Here we investigate its presence in BaCo$_{x}$Fe$_{2-x}$As$_{2}$, a member of the pnictide family, with temperature dependent scanning tunneling spectroscopy. We observe that for under, optimally and overdoped systems the gap in the tunneling spectra always closes at the bulk T$_{c}$, ruling out the presence of a pseudogap state. For the underdoped case we observe superconducting gaps over large fields of view, setting a lower limit of tens of nanometers on the length scale of possible phase separated regions., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) experiments, LEED simulations and finite slab density functional calculations are combined to study the cleavage surface of Co doped BaFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} (x = 0.1, 0.17). We demonstrate that the energy dependence of the LEED data can only be understood from a terminating 1/2 Ba layer accompanied by distortions of the underlying As-Fe_2-As block. As a result, surface related Fe 3d states are present in the electronic structure, which we identify in angle resolved photoemission experiments. The close proximity of the surface-related states to the bulk bands inevitably leads to broadening of the ARPES signals, which excludes the use of the BaFe_{2-x}Co_{x}As_{2} system for accurate determination of self-energies using ARPES., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures includes supplementary material

Using angle resolved photoemission it is shown that the low lying electronic states of the iron pnictide parent compound EuFe$_2$As$_2$ are strongly modified in the magnetically ordered, low temperature, orthorhombic state compared to the tetragonal, paramagnetic case above the spin density wave transition temperature. Back-folded bands, reflected in the orthorhombic/ anti-ferromagnetic Brillouin zone boundary hybridize strongly with the non-folded states, leading to the opening of energy gaps. As a direct consequence, the large Fermi surfaces of the tetragonal phase fragment, the low temperature Fermi surface being comprised of small droplets, built up of electron and hole-like sections. These high resolution ARPES data are therefore in keeping with quantum oscillation and optical data from other undoped pnictide parent compounds., Comment: 4 figures, 6 pages

We elucidate the termination surface of cleaved single crystals of the BaFe_(2-x)Co_(x)As_(2) and Fe_(y)Se_(1-x)Te_(x) families of the high temperature iron based superconductors. By combining scanning tunneling microscopic data with low energy electron diffraction we prove that the termination layer of the Ba122 systems is a remnant of the Ba layer, which exhibits a complex diversity of ordered and disordered structures. The observed surface topographies and their accompanying superstructure reflections in electron diffraction depend on the cleavage temperature. Photoemission data taken with hard x-ray radiation on cleaved single crystals of the bilayered, colossal magnetoresistant manganite La_(2-2x)Sr_(1+2x)Mn_2O_7 (LSMO) with 0.30

Photoemission data taken with hard X-ray radiation on cleaved single crystals of the barium parent compound of the MFe$_2$As$_2$ pnictide high temperature superconductor family are presented. Making use of the increased bulk-sensitivity upon hard X-ray excitation, and comparing the results to data taken at conventional VUV photoemission excitation energies, it is shown that the BaFe$_2$As$_2$ cleavage surface provides an electrostatic environment that is slightly different to the bulk, most likely in the form of a modified Madelung potential. However, as the data argue against a different surface doping level, and the surface-related features in the spectra are by no means as dominating as seen in systems such as YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$, we can conclude that the itinerant, near-E$_F$ electronic states are almost unaffected by the existence of the cleavage surface. Furthermore, exploiting the strong changes in photoionisation cross section between the Fe and As states across the wide photon energy range employed, it is shown that the degree of energetic overlap between the iron 3d and arsenic 4p valence bands is particularly small at the Fermi level, which can only mean a very low degree of hybridization between the Fe 3d and As 4p states near and at E$_F$. Consequently, the itinerancy of the charge carriers in this group of materials involves mainly the Fe 3d - Fe 3d overlap integrals with at best a minor role for the Fe 3d - As 4p hopping parameters, and that the states which support superconductivity upon doping are essentially of Fe 3d character., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

We present tunneling data from optimally-doped, superconducting BaFe1.86Co0.14As2 and its parent compound, BaFe2As2. In the superconductor, clear coherence-like peaks are seen across the whole field of view, and their analysis reveals nanoscale variations in the superconducting gap value, Delta. The average magnitude of 2Delta is ~7.4 kBTC, which exceeds the BCS weak coupling value for either s- or d-wave superconductivity. The characteristic length scales of the deviations from the average gap value, and of an anti-correlation discovered between the gap magnitude and the zero bias conductance, match well with the average separation between the Co dopant ions in the superconducting FeAs planes. The tunneling spectra themselves possess a peak-dip-hump lineshape, suggestive of a coupling of the superconducting electronic system to a well-defined bosonic mode of energy 4.7 kBTC, such as the spin resonance observed recently in inelastic neutron scattering., Comment: 4 figures, corrected typos, reduced size of images

After years of research into colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) manganites using bulk techniques, there has been a recent upsurge in experiments directly probing the electronic states at or near the surface of the bilayer CMR materials La$_{2-2x}$Sr$_{1+2x}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ using angle-resolved photoemission or scanning probe microscopy. Here we report new, temperature dependent, angle resolved photoemission data from single crystals with a doping level of $x=0.36$. The first important result is that there is no sign of a pseudogap in the charge channel of this material for temperatures below the Curie temperature $T_C$. The second important result concerns the temperature dependence of the electronic states. The temperature dependent changes in the Fermi surface spectra both at the zone face and zone diagonal regions in $k$-space indicate that the coherent quasiparticle weight disappears for temperatures significantly above $T_C$, and that the $k$-dependence of the T-induced changes in the spectra invalidate an interpretation of these data in terms of the superposition of a `universal' metallic spectrum and an insulating spectrum whose relative weight changes with temperature. In light of recent conflicting angle resolved photoemission studies on the bilayered colossal magnetoresistant (CMR) manganite La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_{2}O_{7} (0.36< x< 0.40), new ARPES data are presented for x=0.36 and 0.40, showing only for the former clear quasiparticle-like features at and around the (pi, 0)-point in k-space. The electronic states are clearly renormalised, both as regards their dispersion relation and lifetime due to coupling to bosonic degrees of freedom. Importantly, both the existence of quasiparticles and their renormalisation survive well into the paramagnetic state, up to 50 K above T_Curie. This argues against strong coupling to spin modes and raises questions regarding the nature of the paramagnetic insulating phase., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures
