Stance-shift analysis is a multidimensional technique of text analysis that identifies segments in which the speaker/writer uses language to signal affect, evidentiality, intensity or epistemicity.. Its techniques are derived from multidimensional corpus analysis and its insights from linguistic theories about interaction, appraisal and evaluation in text. We analyze stance and the ways speakers/writers shift their stances in a given interaction, as a way to investigate task-directed language in online and face-to-face focus groups and consumer interviews. E-commerce, e-government, and e-justice all wrestle with finding the personal human presence in text-based online communication. Social features are present, if subtle. Retailers and investigators alike must work to identify when and how unseen writers are or are not strongly committed to what they have just written, and must work even harder to keep from reading themselves and their own biases into the text being analyzed. The article discusses the study related to the shifting-stance of deposition by lay witnesses. The article attempts to deal with the aspect of the interactional realities related to the expression of lay witnesses, to understand the various characteristics including positive and negative entanglements, defaults and negotiations around code. The analysis of shifting-stance is focused in three ways including by presenting an overview about the learning of how a lay witness can typically learn about a deposition prior to the experience.

Stance analysis is a multidimensional technique of text analysis that identifies segments in which the speaker's language use signals affect or evaluation, intensity or certainty. This technique is derived from multidimensional corpus analysis and based on linguistic theories about interaction and evaluation in text. We typically have used stance analysis as a way to investigate task-directed language in online and face-to-face focus groups and consumer interviews to locate the rich opinionated areas of discussion. We look first at how to interpret the texts from the viewpoint of appraisal: people offer evaluation or appraisal at different points of their discourse, not just at its end, depending on which perspective they are using at any stage of the discourse. That perspective is the stance they are taking. Stance has multiple dimensions, each of which reflects different aspects of how speakers position themselves vis-&-vis other speakers, or take a perspective on a particular topic. The dimensions of stance are strongly influenced by the rhetorical impact of personal and interpersonal reference, as exemplified by the use of personal pronouns. For the poster session we will demonstrate the applicability and utility of stance analysis in qualitative research for analyzing task-directed discussions, using focus groups as an example. People giving depositions are obligated to spend a great deal of their time stating what they do and do not know, in the face of potential challenges to their credibility and veracity. The roles of the participants in a deposition are asymmetrical in terms of power: both topics and answers are constrained by the lawyers controlling the interaction. Despite such power differentials, we are able to identify some shifts in stance for the person being deposed, using multivariate analysis keyed to our corpus of 125 transcribed depositions. The term stance is common parlance for how people signal confidence or doubt, appraisal or judgment. While stance may be conveyed by specific words - the despise in 'I despised him' signals negativity - people aren't always that straightforward in their choice of individual words. Usage categories and patterns, on the other hand can be counted, correlated, clustered, factored and scaled. Using stance analysis scales, we identify changes in stance across successive sections of a transcript. Our approach derives from current techniques in corpus linguistics (Conrad and Biber 2000), emphasizes appraisal, and helps in the analysis of interviews, focus groups, and other task-directed interactions. When applied to depositions, our analysis also includes measures such as type-token ratio (Carpenter, 1986; Shuy 1998; Singleton, 2002). This presentation outlines how we measure stance and offers examples from two different depositions, from an insurance lawsuit and a divorce, respectively. Intersections among content words, intensifiers, and guardedness in 'Mrs. Willow's' deposition about her medical diagnosis suggested that her lawyer probe additional areas. Stance analysis of 'Karen Carpenter's' deposition found conflicts in how she indicated uncertainty and ascribed intent or behaviors to others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
