By demonstrating that extensional inheritance plays a decisive role in the formation of orogens, recent studies have questioned the ability of a unique, complete Wilson cycle model to explain the diversity of collisional orogens. For 5 years, the OROGEN Research Project had therefore the ambition to challenge this classical Wilson cycle model. By focusing on the diffuse Africa-Europe plate boundary in the Biscay-Pyrenean-Western Mediterranean system, the project questioned the preconceived “Orogen singularity” assumption and investigated the role of divergent and convergent maturities in orogenic and post-orogenic processes. This work led us to rethink the development of collisional orogens in a genetic (or process-driven) way and to propose an updated version of the ” classical Wilson cycle”, the Wilson Cycle 2.0, and the ORO-Genic ID concept presented in this paper. The particularity of the Wilson Cycle 2.0 is to take into account the divergence and convergence maturity reached during extensional and orogenic processes in proposing different tectonic tracks associated with different ORO-Genic ID numbers. The ORO-Genic ID is composed of a letter (or track), corresponding to the maturity of divergence reached and a number corresponding to the maturity of convergence reached during the formation of the orogen. This new concept relies on the observed pre- and syn- convergent tectono- stratigraphic and magmatic record and deformation history and can be identified in using diagnostic criteria presented in this paper. It represents therefore a powerful tool that can be used to characterize the evolution and the architectural type of an orogenic system. Moreover, as a mappable concept, it can be easily used worldwide and can help us to explain differences in the style of deformation at crustal scale between orogens.

This contribution reviews the challenges of imaging collisional orogens, focusing on the example of the Pyrenean domain. Indeed, important progresses have been accomplished regarding our understanding of the architecture of this mountain range over the last decades, thanks to the development of innovative passive imaging techniques, relying on a more thorough exploitation of the information in seismic signals, as well as new seismic acquisitions. New tomographic images provide evidence for continental subduction of Iberian crust beneath the western and central Pyrénées, but not beneath the eastern Pyrénées. Relics of a Cretaceous hyper-extended and segmented rift are found within the North Pyrenean Zone, where the imaged crust is thinner (10–25 km). This zone of thinned crust coincides with a band of positive Bouguer anomalies that is absent in the Eastern Pyrénées. Overall, the new tomographic images provide further support to the idea that the Pyrénées result from the inversion of hyperextended segmented rift systems.

The Pyrenees is a collisional orogen built by inversion of an immature rift system during convergence of the Iberian and European plates from Late Cretaceous to late Cenozoic. The full mountain belt consists of the pro-foreland southern Pyrenees and the retro-foreland northern Pyrenees, where the inverted lower Cretaceous rift system is mainly preserved. Due to low overall convergence and absence of oceanic subduction, this orogen preserves one of the best geological records of early orogenesis, the transition from early convergence to main collision and the transition from collision to post-convergence. During these transitional periods major changes in orogen behavior reflect evolving lithospheric processes and tectonic drivers. Contributions by the OROGEN project have shed new light on these critical periods, on the evolution of the orogen as a whole, and in particular on the early convergence stage. By integrating results of OROGEN with those of other recent collaborative projects in the Pyrenean domain (e.g., PYRAMID, PYROPE, RGF-Pyrénées), this paper offers a synthesis of current knowledge and debate on the evolution of this immature orogen as recorded in the synorogenic basins and fold and thrust belts of both the upper European and lower Iberian plates. Expanding insight on the role of salt tectonics at local to regional scales is summarised and discussed. Uncertainties involved in data compilation across a whole orogen using different datasets are discussed, for example for deriving shortening values and distribution.

We present a 3-D shear wave velocity model of the Mauléon and Arzacq Basins from the surface down to 10 km depth, inverted from phase velocity maps at periods between 2 and 9 s. These phase velocity maps were obtained by analyzing coherent surface wave fronts extracted from ambient seismic noise recorded by the large-N Maupasacq seismic array with a matched filtering approach. This new model is in good agreement with a local earthquake tomography study performed on the same acquisition dataset. Our passive imaging models reveal the upper crustal architecture of the Mauléon and Arzacq Basins, with new details on the basement and its relationship with the overlying sedimentary cover. Combining these new tomographic images with surface and subsurface geological information allows us to trace major orogenic structures from the surface down to the basement. In the basin, the models image the first-order basin architecture with a kilometric resolution. At depth, high velocity anomalies suggest the presence of dense deep crustal and mantle rocks in the hanging wall of north-vergent Pyrenean Thrusts. These high velocity anomalies spatially coincide with a positive gravity anomaly in the western Mauléon Basin. In addition, our models reveal major changes from the Chaînons Béarnais to the western Mauléon Basin across a set of orogen-perpendicular structures, the Saison and the Barlanès transfer zones. These changes reflect the along-strike variation of the orogenic evolution that led to the preservation of the former rifted domain and its underlying mantle in the orogenic wedge of the Western Pyrenees. We discuss the implications of these results for the 3-D architecture of the Mauléon Basin and its underlying basement.

The long-term Pressure-Temperature-time-deformation (P-T-t-d) evolution of the internal zones of orogens results from complex interactions between the subducting lithosphere, the overriding plate and the intervening asthenosphere. 2-D numerical models successfully reproduce natural P-T-t-d paths, but most orogens are non-cylindrical and the situation is far more complex due to 3-D pre-orogenic inheritance and 3-D subduction dynamics. The Mediterranean orogens are intrinsically non-cylindrical. Their 3-D geometry results from the complex shape of the Eurasian and African margins before convergence and from the dynamics of slab retreat and tearing leading to strongly arcuate belts. More than many other segments, the Betic-Rif belt is archetypal of this behavior. A synthesis of the tectonometamorphic evolution of the Internal Zones, also based on recent findings by our group in the framework of the Orogen Project (Alboran domain, including the Alpujárride-Sebtide and Nevado-Filábride complexes) shows the relations in space and time between tectonic and P-T evolutions. The reinterpretation of the contact between peridotite massifs and Mesozoic sediments as an extensional detachment leads to a discussion of the geodynamic setting and timing of mantle exhumation. Based on new 40Ar/39Ar ages in the Alpujárride-Sebtide complex and a discussion of published ages in the Nevado-Filábride complex, we conclude that the age of the HP-LT metamorphism is Eocene in all complexes. A first-order observation is the contrast between the well-preserved Eocene HP-LT blueschists-facies rocks of the eastern Alpujárride-Sebtide Complex and the younger HT-LP conditions reaching partial melting recorded in the Western Alpujárride. We propose a model where the large longitudinal variations in the P-T evolution are mainly due to (i) differences in the timing of subduction and exhumation, (ii) the nature of the subducting lithosphere and (iii) a major change in subduction dynamics at ∼20 Ma associated with a slab-tearing event. The clustering of radiometric ages obtained with different methods around 20 Ma results from a regional exhumation episode coeval with slab tearing, westward migration of the trench, back-arc extension and thrusting of the whole orogen onto the African and Iberian margins.

The architecture and tectono-magmatic evolution of the lithosphere of Europe are the result of a succession of subduction, rifting and inputs from plumes that have modified the lithospheric mantle since the Neoproterozoic (750–500 Ma). These events gave birth to contrasting crust-mantle and lithosphere-asthenosphere mechanical coupling between strong, viscous, thick, cold, depleted mantle of the Archean lithosphere of the West African Craton and the East European Craton, and the weak, low viscous, thin, hot and less depleted mantle of the Phanerozoic lithosphere of Central Europe. These differences were long-lived and explain the first-order present-day stresses and topography as well as the styles of orogenic deformation. The lack of thermal relaxation needed to maintain rheological contrasts over several hundreds of millions of years requires high mantle heat flux below Central Europe since at least the last 300 Ma. A combination of edge-driven convection on craton margins and asthenospheric flow triggered by rift propagation during the Atlantic and Tethys rifting is suggested to be the main source of heat. The topography of Central Europe remained in part dynamically supported during most of the Mesozoic thinning in line with the long-term stability of thermal-mechanical structure of the lithosphere. Timing and rates of exhumation recorded across Western Europe during convergence indicate that an additional control by the architecture of Mesozoic rifted margins is required. By 50 Ma the acceleration of orogenic exhumation, from the High Atlas to the Pyrenees, occurred synchronously with the onset of extension and magmatism in the West European Rift. Extension marks the onset of distinct orogenic evolution between Western Europe (Iberia) and the Alps (Adria) in the east, heralding the opening of the Western Mediterranean. A major kinematic re-organisation occurred triggering the involvement of more buoyant and thicker portions of rifted margins resulting in widespread orogenic growth. We conclude that conceptual models of collision require to better account for the thermo-magmatic evolution of the continental lithosphere, especially the original architecture and composition of its mantle, as well as the precise knowledge of the architecture of the rifted margins to explain the timing and rates of orogenic topography.

A long-standing challenge in tectonics is to evaluate the role of inheritance and define the initial conditions of a geodynamic system, which are prerequisites to understand and model its evolution with some accuracy. Here we revisit the concept of “inheritance” by distinguishing “interface shape inheritance”, which includes the transient thermal state and gravitational potential energy, and “persisting inheritance”, which encompasses long-lasting structural and compositional inheritance. This new approach allows us to investigate, at each stage of a Wilson Cycle, the interplay between inheritance (innate/“genetic code”) and the physical processes at play (extension/compression, magmatism etc.). The aim of this paper is to provide a conceptual framework that integrates the role of inheritance in the study of rifts, rifted margins and collisional orogens based on the work done in the OROGEN project, which focuses on the Biscay-Pyrenean system. The Biscay-Pyrenean rift system resulted from a multistage rift evolution that developed over a complex lithosphere pre-structured by the Variscan orogenic cycle. There is a general agreement that the Pyrenean-Cantabrian orogen resulted from the reactivation of an increasingly mature rift system along-strike, ranging from mature rifted margins in the west to an immature and segmented hyperextended rift in the east. However, different models have been proposed to explain the preceding rifting and its influence on the subsequent reactivation. Results from the OROGEN project highlight the sequential reactivation of rift-inherited decoupling horizons and identify the specific role of exhumed mantle, hyperextended and necking domains during compressional reactivation. They also highlight the contrasting fate of rift segment centres versus segment boundaries during convergence, explaining the non-cylindricity of internal parts of collisional orogens. Results from the OROGEN project also suggest that the role of inheritance is more important during the initial stages of collision, which may explain the higher complexity of internal parts of orogenic systems with respect to their external parts. In contrast, when the system involved in the orogeny is more mature, the orogenic evolution is mostly controlled by first-order physical processes as described in the Coulomb Wedge theory, for instance. This may account for the simpler and more continuous architecture of external parts of collisional orogens and may also explain why most numerical models can reproduce mature orogenic architectures with a better accuracy compared to those of initial collisional stages. The new concepts developed from the OROGEN research are now ready to be tested at other orogenic systems that result from the reactivation of rifted margins, such as the Alps, the Colombian cordilleras and the Caribbean, Taiwan, Oman, Zagros or Timor.

Whereas a straightforward link between crustal thinning and geothermal gradients during rifting is now well established, the thermal structure of sedimentary basins within hyperextended domains remains poorly documented. For this purpose, we investigate the spatial distribution of rift-related High-Temperature Low-Pressure (HT/LP) metamorphism recorded in the preserved hyperextended rift basins inverted and integrated in the Pyrenean-Cantabrian belt. Based on Vitrinite Reflectance (Ro) data measured in 169 boreholes and more than 200 peak-metamorphic temperatures (Tmax) data obtained by Raman Spectroscopy of Carbonaceous Material (RSCM) added to ∼425 previously published Tmax data, we propose a new map depicting the spatial distribution of the HT/LP metamorphism of the Pyrenean-Cantabrian belt. We also provide three regional-scale geological cross-sections associated with Ro and Tmax data to constrain the distribution of paleo-isograds at depth. Based on these results, we show that the impact of rift-related metamorphism is restricted to the pre- and syn-rift sequence suggested by the depth profiles of Ro values measured in different tectonostratigraphic intervals (pre-, syn- and post-rift and syn-convergence sediments). However, a small strip of early orogenic sediments (Santonian in age) appears also affected by high temperatures along the North Pyrenean Frontal Thrust and above the Grand Rieu ridge, which we attribute to the percolation of hot hydrothermal fluids sourced from the dehydration of underthrust basement and/or sedimentary rocks at depth during the early orogenic stage. The map shows that the HT/LP metamorphism (reaching ∼500 °C) is recorded with similar intensity along the Pyrenean-Cantabrian belt from the west in the Basque-Cantabrian Basin to the east in the Boucheville and Bas-Agly basins, for similar burial and rift-related structural settings. This thermal peak is also recorded underneath the northern border of the Mauléon Basin (calibrated by wells). It suggests that the high temperatures were recorded at the basement-sediment interface underneath the most distal part of the hyperextended domain. At basin-scale, we observe in the Basque-Cantabrian, Mauléon-Arzacq and Tarascon rift segments an asymmetry of the thermal structure revealed by different horizontal thermal gradients, supporting an asymmetry of the former hyperextended rift system. Using our results, we compare the Pyrénées to the Alps that also recorded hyperextension but no HT/LP metamorphic event and suggest that the high-temperature record within the basins depends on high sedimentation rate promoting a thermal blanketing effect and circulation of hydrothermal fluids.

The present-day tectonic setting of the Western Mediterranean region, from the Pyrénées to the Betics and from the Alps to the Atlas, results from a complex 3-D geodynamic evolution involving the interactions between the Africa, Eurasia and Iberia plates and asthenospheric mantle dynamics underneath. In this paper, we review the main tectonic events recorded in this region since the Early Cretaceous and discuss the respective effects of far-field and near-field contributions, in order to unravel the origin of forces controlling crustal deformation. The respective contributions of mantle-scale, plate-scale and local processes in the succession of tectonic stages are discussed. Three periods can be distinguished: (1) the first period (Tethyan Tectonics), from 110 to 35 Ma, spans the main evolution of the Pyrenean orogen and the early evolution of the Betics, from rifting to maximum shortening. The rifting between Iberia and Europe and the subsequent progressive formation of new compressional plate boundaries in the Pyrénées and the Betics, as well as the compression recorded all the way to the North Sea, are placed in the large-scale framework of the African and Eurasian plates carried by large-scale mantle convection; (2) the second period (Mediterranean Tectonics), from 32 to 8 Ma, corresponds to a first-order change in subduction dynamics. It is most typically Mediterranean with a dominant contribution of slab retreat and associated mantle flow in crustal deformation. Mountain building and back-arc basin opening are controlled by retreating and tearing slabs and associated mantle flow at depth. The 3-D interactions between the different pieces of retreating slabs are complex and the crust accommodates the mantle flow underneath in various ways, including the formation of metamorphic core complexes and transfer fault zones; (3) the third period (Late-Mediterranean Tectonics) runs from 8 Ma to the Present. It corresponds to a new drastic change in the tectonic regime characterized by the resumption of N-S compression along the southern plate boundary and a propagation of compression toward the north. The respective effects of stress transmission through the lithospheric stress-guide and lithosphere-asthenosphere interactions are discussed throughout this period.

The tectonic evolution of highly oblique continental margins that result from extension above lithospheric subduction–transform edge propagator (STEP) faults is poorly understood. Here, we investigate the case of the Alboran margin in the eastern Betics characterized by crustal thinning of 15–10 km, oblique to the direction of slab retreat. The current deformation patterns indicate that oblique rifting is underway. However, it is unclear whether these conditions are those that prevailed during the formation of the metamorphic domes and intramontane basins. We review the temporal and spatial evolution of Neogene sedimentary basins and brittle deformation in the eastern Betics and exploit offshore seismic reflection lines to propose a crustal-scale section across the oblique margin. The history of sediment infill and rates of subsidence combined with the analyses of fault slip data confirm that brittle extension oriented from north 20 ∘ E to E–W occurred during an interval spanning from the Serravallian–early Tortonian to the late Tortonian (14–8 Ma). This extension is associated with both normal and strike-slip regimes and the evolution of the strike-slip fault zones flanking the metamorphic domes. The transtensional model forms a coherent scheme linking the ductile deformation associated with metamorphic domes and the formation of E–W- and NW–SE- or NNW–SSE-directed sedimentary basins in the brittle upper crust during the Tortonian. The oblique extension, which is closely associated with STEP faulting, occurred during the regional convergence between Africa and Iberia since the Miocene. Only recently, around 8 Ma, has slab detachment started to migrate westward, leading to tectonic inversion in the eastern Betics. Such a type of narrow oblique-rifted margin associated with transform-like plate boundaries is not unique but is expected to be hardly preserved in the geological record due to the transient nature of retreating subduction systems. [1] In this paper we describe the tectonosedimentary evolution and its subsequent inversion of a basin that underwent extreme crustal thinning in a transtensional setting ahead of a propagating ocean in the western Pyrenees. The Labourd-Mauleon area situated in the western Pyrenees, at the termination of the V-shaped Bay of Biscay, is an ideal natural laboratory to study how such complex basins evolve in time and space. Because of a mild inversion of the basin during Pyrenean compression, the rift structures and their relations to basement rocks and sediments are exposed and can be directly studied in the field. The basin shows a complex polyphase evolution that starts with left-lateral dominated transtension in latest Jurassic early Aptian time. This event is overprinted by a late Aptian--early Albian extension that is related to the counterclockwise rotation of Iberia away from Europe leading to the opening of the Bay of Biscay. During this stage, the Late Triassic to Jurassic carbonate platform was stretched, salt migrated, and detachment faults exhumed upper and lower crustal and mantle rocks to the seafloor. The final structure of the basin resembles a sag basin floored by exhumed rocks overlain by extensional allochthons and compartmentalized by N40[degrees] to N60[degrees] transfer faults. The sedimentary architecture is characterized by late Aptian synrift sediments (e.g., Urgonian limestones) that were deposited in fault-bounded basins and are overlain by thick latest Aptian to Albo-Cenomanian sediments (e.g., Flysch noir) that define a sag sequence. The complex tectonosedimentary evolution of the basin is associated with salt tectonics and overprinted by a major magmatic/thermal event that postdates mantle exhumation. Citation: Jammes, S., G.
