Abstract

Abstract Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is a major human pathogen and a research priority for developing new antimicrobial agents. CRAB is a causative agent of a variety of infections in different body sites. One of the manifestations is catheter-associated urinary tract infection, which exposes the bacteria to the host’s urine, creating a particular environment. Exposure of two CRAB clinical isolates, AB5075 and AMA40, to human urine (HU) resulted in the differential expression levels of 264 and 455 genes, respectively, of which 112 were common to both strains. Genes within this group play roles in metabolic pathways such as phenylacetic acid (PAA) catabolism, the Hut system, the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, and other processes like quorum sensing and biofilm formation. These results indicate that the presence of HU induces numerous adaptive changes in gene expression of the infecting bacteria. These changes presumably help bacteria establish and thrive in the hostile conditions in the urinary tract. These analyses advance our understanding of CRAB’s metabolic adaptations to human fluids, as well as expand knowledge on bacterial responses to distinct human fluids containing different concentrations of human serum albumin (HSA).

7. Modified Hunt's equation incorporating wave setup

Abstract

Hunt's equation provides a simple means of estimating the runup of breaking waves. However, breaking waves also induce setup on a slope. A modification to Hunt's equation is advocated which accounts for the presence of wave setup. Support for the modification is provided by data from model tests involving random waves approaching smooth, impermeable slopes of 1:5, 1:10, 1:20, and 1:30. Coefficients to be used in the modified equation are given which allow the significant runup and other characteristic values to be estimated. 26. Linkages between sediment composition, wave climate and beach profile variability at multiple timescales

Abstract

The paper analyses, compares and contrasts cross-shore morphodynamic behaviour offour diverse beaches that have very different regional settings, wave climates and sediment characteristics, with the aid ofrarely available long term measurements of beach profiles and incident waves. The beaches investigated are Narrabeen Beach, New South Wales, Australia; Milford-on-Sea Beach, Christchurch Bay, UK; Hasaki Coast, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan; and Joetsu-Ogata Coast, Niigata Prefecture, Japan. A statistical analysis, equilibrium beach profile analysis and Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis are used to investigate, compare and contrast spatial and temporal variability of cross shore beach profiles of the selected beaches at short-, medium- and long-term timescales. All beaches show evidence ofmulti-timescale morphodynamic change. Narrabeen Beach profile has the highest sensitivity to local weather patterns. Milford-on-Sea, Joetsu-Ogata and Hasaki profiles are sensitive to seasonal variation of the wave climate however, they also show some correlations with regional climate variabilities. The nature of sediment exchange across the profile, which contributes to profile shape change with time, is found to be related to sediment characteristics across the profile. At Milford-on-Sea and Joetsu-Ogata, both of which have composite profiles, sediment exchange between the upper beach and the inter-tidal zone dominates profile change, irrespective of the distinct differences in sediment composition found in the two beaches. On the other hand in Narrabeen and Hasaki where beach sediment comprises medium to find sand, sediment exchange and hence profile change occur mainly in intertidal and subtidal zones.

Abstract

Esta comunicação analisa a aplicabilidade a estruturas marítimas verticais do modelo de galgamentos de Hedges & Reis (H&R), originalmente desenvolvido, calibrado e validado para estruturas em talude (Hedges & Reis, 1998, 2004; Reis et al., 2008). Apresenta a comparação dos resultados deste modelo e de outras formulações empíricas (Pullen et al., 2007; Goda, 2008) com os dados existentes na base de dados do projeto europeu CLASH para estruturas marítimas verticais. Este estudo enquadra-se na extensão da aplicabilidade do modelo a estruturas verticais (Reis et al., 2013) e tem vindo a ser realizado por solicitação da Royal HaskoningDHV que, desde 1998, tem desenvolvido sistemas de previsão e alerta de inundações nas Ilhas Britânicas, utilizando este modelo (Lane et al., 2008; Naysmith et al., 2013). 28. Extending the H&R wave overtopping model to vertical structures

Abstract

The H&R wave overtopping model, originally developed for sloping structures, is employed in a number of operational coastal flood forecasting and warning systems. This paper describes the first step in a project to extend the model to encompass vertical structures. Use is made of the CLASH database for the purpose of checking whether it is appropriate to simply extrapolate the existing formulae for the model’s empirical coefficients beyond their strict ranges of applicability. The outcome is encouraging. Despite the fact that, in general, the model tended to underestimate the higher wave overtopping rates, it was reasonably accurate in describing the lower overtopping rates which normally trigger flood warnings, suggesting that it may be worthwhile pursuing the task of calibrating and validating the H&R model for vertical structures. 7 4 10p DHA/NPE 2013 4 a 7 de Junho

29. Development of 3D beach evolution model for sand nourishments and its application to morphodynamics around coastal structures

Abstract

A numerical model to predict three-dimensional (3D) beach evolution after sand nourishment was developed. The injection process of sand to near shoreline or offshore area was expressed by the sediment flux in the conservation equation associated with sediment transports and water depth changes, furthermore, sand dredging process was considered. In this study, First, computation of beach evolution around a coastal structure with and without nourishment was carried out. Secondly, the developed model was applied to the sand recycling project conducted at a field site, Kaike Coast, Tottori, Japan. Computed result was compared with the field data at Kaike Coast. Finally, the applicability of the developed model was investigated.

30. Consideration of apllicability of stochastic tropical cyclone model for probability assessment of storm surge

Abstract

Storm surge risk is basic and important information for design of coastal structure, but its probability assessment is difficult because the frequency of devastating TC is not so high. Furthermore, storm surge damage is very sensitive to not only its intensity but also its track and translation speed. Therefore, the estimation of occurrence probability of devastating disaster from our limited observation data has uncertainty. Recently, we have developed Global Stochastic Tropical cyclone Model (GSTM). The comparison of observation data and simulation results of GSTM showed the reasonable reproducibility of macroscopic statistics of TC parameters such as central pressure, translation direction and speed. However, the verification area of previous study was too large to consider the applicability to risk assessment of local bay scale. Therefore, the microscopic and detailed verification of GSTM is necessary. In this study, we tried to evaluation of reproducibility of TC parameters which was calculated by GSTM at small region as a local bay scale. Furthermore, we improved GSTM by implementation of the cluster analysis of observation data to the process of estimation of the joint Probability Density Function (joint PDF) of temporal correlation of TC parameters. At last of this study, a case study approach by storm surge simulation was performed in order to explain the practical meaning of GSTM. Synthetic TC data based on historical TC track was generated and they were used for input to numerical model for estimating the water height of storm surge at regional scale. Then, the TC track of the worst-case scenario for Yatsushiro bay located in center of west Kyushu Island was decided. Finally, the occurrence probability of the worst-case scenario was calculated from GSTM results.

Abstract

Symposium E, session 18, paper number E18-0030-10 (Oral); International audience; The JEM-EUSO mission explores the origin of the extreme energy comic-rays (EECRs) above 1020 eV and challenges to the limit of the basic physics, through the observations, of their arrival directions and energies. It is designed to observe more than 1,000 events of EECRs above 7×1019 eV in its five-year operation with an exposure larger than 1 million km2 * sr * year. The super-wide-field (60 degrees) telescope with a diameter of about 2.5m looks down the atmosphere of the night-side of the earth to detect near UV photons (330-400nm, both fluorescent and Cherenkov photons) emitted from the giant air-shower produced by an EECR. The arrival direction map with 1,000 events naturally tells us the origin of the EECRs and allows us to identify the EECR sources to known astronomical objects. The comparison among the energy spectra of the spatially resolved individual sources will clarify the acceleration/emission mechanism, and also finally confirm the Greisen-Zatse'pin-Kuzmin process for the validation of Lorentz invariance up to ˜ 1011 . Neutral components (neutrinos and gamma rays) can also be detected as well, if their fluxes are high enough. The JEM-EUSO mission is planned to be launched by a H2B rocket about 2015 and transferred to ISS by H2 Transfer Vehicle (HTV). It will be attached to the external experiment platform of "KIBO" which completed July 2009 by STS-127 mission of the space shuttle. The first flight of HTV by H2B rocket was successfully done in September and October 2009.
