The aim of this qualitative case study is to examine the phenomenon of female students' disproportionate representation in senior level Physical Health Education (PHE) classes. The subject for this teacher's Masters level project arose from the first author's personal observations while teaching across several schools in British Columbia, Canada. Through semi-structured interviews with self-identified female participants, we explore female subject choice and if, along with possible reasons why, females may avoid participation in senior level (grade 11-12) mixed gender PHE activity courses. This discussion asserts that females mostly make conscious choices to avoid mixed gender courses at the senior level for several key reasons; females feel silenced by their male peers, PHE is not an inclusive environment, and females perceive their male counterparts assert dominance over them in PHE class. This paper continues with a discussion regarding reinforced gendered norms and their effect on perceived barriers to female participation in schools, and concludes with suggestions for how schools and educators might support female students' participation. The present article focuses on The Double, deliberately turning away from the literary motif that Saramago appropriates to denaturalize and expose the constructedness of dominant masculinity and its apparatuses of social and symbolic reproduction. The analysis sheds light on the functioning of several of such instruments, as dramatized in the novel: the name as original language; popular cinema; and common senses inherited from the oral tradition. The final section discusses the critical commentary that accompanies the narrative in dialog with contemporary critiques of masculine gender privilege.

This article proposes a feminist reading of Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams and Other Prose Writings (1977) by Sylvia Plath. Its main purpose is to deconstruct Ted Hughes’ critical analysis of Plath’s stories which claims their aesthetic « weakness » (« Introduction », Johnny Panic). Moreover, this paper analyzes a selection of Plath’s stories by showing their political dimension and their connections with several concepts of the sexual difference feminism. In conclusion, this article retraces the evolution of Plath’s political awareness as well as her new interest in History and in her contemporary socio-political world.

A Bourdieusian analysis of gender relations within political organizations is highly instructive. This kind of analysis might provide insight into the intertwinement of gender and politics by illuminating the construction process of gendered political identities. Drawing upon memoirs written by the members of the left-wing organizations in Turkey and interviews conducted with them, this article argues that the narratives of members of the Turkish left reflect the multidimensional nature of what Pierre Bourdieu called masculine domination. Early marriage, commonly referred to as child marriage, is still a prevalent social issue in many countries throughout the world. Millions of girls around the world have been subjected to underage marriage. This phenomenon is the marriage of girls under the age of 18, before they have the physical, emotional, and psychological maturity to make informed decisions about marriage, to shoulder the responsibilities of marriage and family, and to bear children. This problem, which manifests itself repeatedly with social crises, has lifelong detrimental impacts on women, including a lack of education, health risks, emotional and psychological difficulties, low self-esteem, a lack of empowerment, and increased vulnerability to domestic violence. Therefore, the phenomenon of early marriage also involves depriving individuals of their childhood and future. This qualitative research, which was conducted between 2015 and 2018 in the Gaziantep province through indepth interviews with 25 women between the ages of 18 and 60 who were married under the age of 18, explores the causes of child marriage and its destructive and lifelong physical, emotional and social effects on women who are subjected to this practice. The study finds that many girls are pushed into marriage at a young age due to social, cultural, and economic factors that lead to gender inequality fueled by patriarchal traditions, and that the inconsistency of laws and failures in implementation, as well as an affirmative cultural perspective, make child marriage a difficult problem to solve. The study, demonstrating that child marriage is a form of "violence" against girls, a violation of human and 'children's rights', and therefore cannot be accepted as 'normal' and is a practice that reinforces the unequal position of women, aims to contribute to the efforts and studies in Turkey and around the world to understand this phenomenon as a problem and to raise awareness for its solution. Although the role of women in traditional festivities in Catalonia has been subordinate to that of men, for some years now women have been trying to gain prominence. This article presents a case study about a group of women devils in the city of Mataró (Barcelona). Based on the interviews carried out and a participant observation process, we analyse the implications of breaking with male hegemony with a group exclusively of women, especially when it is a festive activity in public space and with fire. The text analyses the internal dynamics of the group, its public exposure and the relationships between power and vulnerability. Prostitute praising is represented by Remy Sylado in novel titled Ca-Bau-Kan: Hanya Sebuah Dosa (1999) and Arswendo Atmowiloto in novel titled Dewi Kawi (2008). Prostitute praising in the novels written by males in religious society in the midst of discourse about freedom of expression flowing in post-1998 era in Indonesia becomes problem of this research. Regarding the problem, this research aims to identify: (1) how prostitute praising is represented by males in their novel, (2) why male novelists produce such representations by applying Stuart Hall’s representation theory in relation to production of meaning through language and production of knowledge through discourse. The theory application reveals that male novelists represent prostitute praising in private and public domain which are mixed up and that there is relation between male and female in the domains siding with male as constructed by post-1998 discursive formation involving the state and religions to uphold masculine domination.

This article uses the narratives of survivors of honor killing to show that women's agency is the reason for life threats because it undermines masculine domination. The findings show that life threats are made against women engaging in behaviors not aligned to cultural norms as perceived by male members of their family, to escape shame and gossip, and it is a manifestation of men losing control over women. These survivors of honor-based violence have undermined masculine domination by acting in unanticipated ways and by fleeing to a shelter home in the face of overwhelming cultural sanctions and structural inequalities. The aim of this study is to highlight gender norms in physical education (PE) dance lessons, in order to analyse how secondary school students, both girls and boys, negotiate these norms. To do this, we used Bourdieu's concept of masculine domination and Butler's theory of heteronormativity. Video material was collected from eight Swedish secondary schools. This material was analysed qualitatively with the help of masculine domination and heteronormativity. We bring to light three relevant vignettes that illustrate gender norms during the dance lessons. The first vignette explains that, in most cases, girls choreograph and boys execute. Hence, this situation testifies the emergence of traditional and normative gendered positions between students, accordingly to their gender. Secondly, if the roles are reversed between girls and boys, suggesting that masculine domination is less prevalent during the dance lessons, we demonstrate that girls are still dominated because they teach boys how they should lead girls (at least so that it looks like they are leading). Finally, we observed that masculine domination can be considered a double oppression on boys and girls. There appears a co-construction of the students' own submission because girls teach boys how these have to be masculine, meanwhile boys, victims of their own oppression, keep the position as followers in this feminine activity. In parallel, girls assign masculine and feminine positions according to the gender of the students and support, eventually, the reproduction of balance of power representing the heteronormativity of gendered norms. In conclusion, masculine domination seems, at first glance, to be challenged in PE dance lessons because girls have the dominant role. However, by keeping the balance of power between the gendered positions, they strengthen heteronorms, that is, a principal element of the emergence of masculine domination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study explores the phenomenon of groups of men known as Involuntary Celibates (Incels) in an internet meme culture. This research used Visual methodologies by Rose Gillian, and Masculine domination by Pierre Bourdieu. In addition, this research used the additional The Red Pill psychology theoretical framework by Peter Wright and Paul Elam followed by several Red Pill ideologies which spread across The Red Pill communities. All the data are collected from several internet memes platforms and the following memes are downloaded that represent Incels-related subjects. The results show that the correlation between Masculine domination and The Red Pill hierarchical masculinity had formed the heteronormative masculinity in which men are considered attractively masculine if they fulfilled the heteronormative scale of desired men, such as physical appearances (height, facial features, and muscularity), psychological traits, and socioeconomic behaviour. Furthermore, Incels' celibacy reflected in a meme culture is rooted in their unattractiveness, thus perfectly manifesting the emphasizing of heteronormative masculinity as a standard of real desired men as Incels are rejected both by society and women based on their unfulfillment of heteronormative masculinity which displays in Incels-related memes. The gender division of labour is a phenomenon that projects masculine domination that pervades society. The gendering of occupations is essentially different from society to society. However, most cultures see music is seen as a male occupation At this point, “bayan orchestras”, musical practices that are done by women-only musicians and for women-only audience subvert social presumptions about the gender of conservative communities, which is both a result and reproduction of masculine domination. There “bayan orchestras” in conservative communities are results of banning women to dance in the presence of men. In this context; It is also not welcome for women to dance in entertainment with male orchestras. However, this situation is resolved by women performing music in the public sphere, which may not be welcomed, either. Thus, DJs and musicians who call themselves “bayan orchestra” emerge in response to the need for musicians in women-only entertainments, especially in conservative communities, such as henna nights. In this context, DJ Cannur, who provides bayan orchestra service” to mostly conservative groups in the Kemalpaşa district of İzmir, is our case study. This study aims to examine the “bayan” orchestra practice in the context of gender division of labour. In this context, first, gender division of labour and gender division of labour in music are examined. Afterwards, henna night as a gendered entertainment practice and the role of this ritual in the emergence of “bayan orchestras” are emphasized. Finally, an analysis based on interviews is presented.

Ann Veronica de H. G. Wells se présente comme un récit d’émancipation féminine, si ce n’est que la militante pour le suffrage féminin que l’auteur met en scène est sujette à des hésitations quant à la cause qu’elle doit embrasser. Plusieurs discours contradictoires voisinent et s’opposent dans le roman à des fins satiriques, exposant la brutalité des préjugés genrés qui contraignent les femmes à l’asservissement. Pourtant, sans cesser de défendre un progressisme dans les mœurs et les relations entre les sexes, Wells reste partie prenante de la domination masculine et cette ambivalence se reflète dans le traitement qu’il réserve au personnage éponyme.

The present paper makes use of Michel Foucault’s theory from Discipline and Punish according to which one of the means by which women’s bodies are controlled is through their hystericization by the power-knowledge-wielding medical profession. Taking Stoker’s famous novel as a case in point, I mean to show that the men of the novel, embodiments of Reason and Empire, gathered around the guiding medical intelligence of professor Van Helsing, act upon the bodies of the vampirized women (Lucy and Mina) in a way that is the metaphorical expression of the symbolic violence perpretated against women socially. Thus, the novel is gothic in more ways than one: its much-discussed portrayal of sexually-liberated femininity through vampirization finds its counterpart in the less-approached medical masculinity, a reinforcer of masculine domination.

The article develops the editors' thesis that women researchers in social sciences are less recognized than their well-known husbands. It focuses on the example of the marriage of Maria and Stanisław Ossowski. The selected couple issue is a complex one due to the specificity of both researchers' situation. One should consider that they worked in various academic disciplines (Stanisław as a sociologist, Maria as a researcher of morality closer to ethics). The next issue is career development's pace opposite the central thesis's expected rate – Maria promoted faster. Another problem is the difference in temperaments and the style of scientific work. Finally, one cannot omit the context of the history of Poland. Especially pivotal are significant social changes: regaining Poland's independence after the partition and establishing new Polish universities and faculties and, the second one, social change during the communist period. Regardless of some advantages of Maria, the example of the Ossowski couple in many dimensions confirms the problem of obstacles to women's academic development, and as a result – their lower recognition in the academic community. Both Virginia Woolf's Orlando and Angela Carter's The Passion of New Eve depict the transformation of a male character into a female one. In both texts these changes are not initially desired by the subjects but rather they are imposed on them by forces outside their control. Their transitions from male to female stirs in both novels a debate regarding the construction of gender by society and its influence in people. This article will analyze the way Orlando and Evelyn/Eve enter womanhood after going through a sex change and how both transformations imply a loss of power and privilege once the characters are no longer men. It will also compare and discuss the alternatives Woolf and Carter offer in terms of the new understandings of gender they propose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article we focus on sixty South African primary schoolgirls' experiences of male violence and bullying. Rejecting outmoded constructions of schoolgirls as passive, we examine how girls draw on different forms of femininity to manage and address violence at school. These femininities are non-normative in their advancing of violence to stop violence but are also imbued with culturally relevant meanings about care, forgiveness, and humanity based on the African principle of ubuntu. Moving away from the discursive production of girls' victimhood, we show how girls construct their own agency as they actively participate in multiple forms of femininity advocating both violence and forgiveness. Given the absence of teacher and parental support for girls' safety, we conclude with a call to address interventions contextually, from schoolgirls' own perspectives. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to confront two opposite views on the romantic idea of love and its role in contemporary Western societies. According to one of the analysed perspectives, represented most fully by anthony gid dens, the romantic idea of love is seen as a dangerous delusion, bound to be abandoned in the rapidly changing societies of today. According to the other view, proposed by Pierre Bourdieu, romantic love is still the only means to escape the power of symbolic domination. In conclusion, both accounts are analysed in terms of their underlying mythologies: victorian in case of giddens, romantic in case of Bourdieu. Notions of ‘ontologi‑cal security’ and the ‘unity of the loving dyad’ are shown to be the cornerstones of powerful mythological systems encompassing our aims and modes of expression.

Martial arts such as Taekwondo and Gumdo are distinctive symbols of Korean culture. Its international dissemination is the outcome of a governmental policy sustained since the middle of the 20th century. The popularity of this training systems is associated with the idea that they instill fundamental values of Korean society, such as respect for authority and hierarchy, and the preeminence of collective over individual. In this paper we describe how such values are incorporated and reproduced in the daily practice of martial arts in Korea, by analyzing the rank system typical of these disciplines and the rites of passage needed for moving through this symbolically structured space. In doing so, we show some tensions and arrangements which arise from the confrontation between the values that martial disciplines incarnate and wider moral regimes. Specifically, how the teaching of martial arts in Korea contributes to the reproduction of gender inequalities, preserving a specific form of masculine domination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article approaches gender-based violence in Caribbean Colombian literature, through the short story Marsolaire (1941), written by Amira de la Rosa. In the plot’s summary, an underage girl is raped by her godfather. No one, including the victim, seems to consider this as a violent act. Obscuring the abuse is a given problem depicted not only at intratextual level ; it also seems to have blinded the critics, making them accomplices of the offence, reproducing the masculine domination. Rape is a subject which has rarely triggered a profound meditation in the region’s literary manifestations, perhaps because it would imply a radical criticism of Caribbean society, therefore revealing the power relations which include part of an idiosyncrasy seen as legitimate and natural.

This article will discusses the process of disintegration of masculine control over the feminine one, what not only comes from the redefinition of women ́s role in society today, but also from the historical transformations that have occurred and thus questioned the myth of masculinity. A new definition of what actually is to become a man has been presented, based on conflicts in the spheres of subjectivity and intimacy. We’ll try, therefore, to put together, in this article, elements that can contribute towards a reflection about the masculine ideal that is based upon the supposedly unfailing masculine dominator archetype in patriarchal society.

Judges 19:1-30 has played an important role in the rise of feminist exegesis due to its exceptionally graphic account of the violent death of the Levite’s concubine, a victim of sexual violence wholly without voice, and almost wholly without agency (see esp. Trible 1984). The narrative is also frequently discussed in connection with biblical attitudes to the homoerotic, largely on account of its strong similarity to the better known Gen. 19:1-29, on which it may be dependent. As such, it is not only an example of the kind of gendered subjective violence with which the Hebrew scriptures are replete, but also a key part of the process by which the scripturalization of works such as Judges has helped to shape the later attitudes and prejudices of those who hold it to be Scripture. In this case, it is part of the genesis of the symbolic violence of Jewish and Christian homophobia. Yet to focus on the anal rape threatened against the Levite, and its role in the construction of certain kinds of religious homophobia, would also be to limit the significance of the text for understanding the nexus between religion and violence in all its complexity. For the threatened rape of the Levite, and the actual rape of his concubine, cannot be separated from the subsequent abduction of the virgins of Jabesh-Gilead (Jdg. 21:8- 12), and the abduction of the virgins of Shiloh on the day of a religious festival (Jdg. 21:19-24; cf. Pausanias, Description of Greece 4.4.1-3; Livy, Ab Urbe Condita 1.9-13), both of which are later scenes within the same narrative. All of these elements of the narrative reflect the pervasive influence of what Pierre Bourdieu has called “masculine domination” ([1998] 2001), which is not only at work within and behind the acts of subjective violence in the text itself, but also shapes the symbolic violence that is a key part of the text’s effect. In theory anyone with a computer, tablet, or smartphone can 'play the studio', but is this reality or rhetoric? The putative democratization of recording technology is tethered to a basic economic argument - affordability equals access - while analyses of the sociocultural conditions of this mode of music making have been largely overlooked. Considering that playing the studio is an elemental practice in the making of many popular musics, the implications of this inquiry are relevant to all dwellers on the delta of where music, technology and education meet. First, I provide a concise history of the concept of playing the studio to frame the subsequent discussion on diversity in this practice, particularly as it relates to gender. Second, I report findings from a survey I conducted in New York City on playing the studio, which confirm this practice is predominantly the preserve of white, male guitarists. The dearth of women in the sample (11%) serves to elucidate the reality that the supposed 'democratization' of music making ushered in by the DAW has not actually occurred. Third, I contextualize these findings with a discussion on related research to affirm that the underrepresentation of women in playing the studio is consistent with the history of recording studio culture, and more broadly with Bourdieu's notion of 'masculine domination' (2001). In conclusion, I suggest that in order to de-gender the masculine/feminine binary implicit in software and hardware for music production, educators and students alike need to infiltrate the design process and be active agents in the development of the technologies they will use to make music. The paper examines the gender and ethnicity tie in a Roma community from Romania by considering the women's point of view towards marriage, couple relations and domestic violence. We can call these Roma 'married people' as far as the marriage is the crux point where the danger of sexual impurity, the gendered adulthood and the ethnicity are managed. For women, the marriage is both patriarchal oppression and self-emancipation, space for being exchanged (the bride price is practiced) and for becoming a R(r)omni [married woman as well as romani woman], which is the only gender identity admitted as adult for them: the marital status, the couple relation and the social roles concerning the family life make Roma women protagonists of their own life, human subjects not just objects.
