6. On the Generating Mechanisms of Daily Precipitation in the Conterminous United States: Climatology, Trends, and Associated Marginal and Extreme Distributions.

Abstract

A critical task to better quantify changes in precipitation (P) mean and extreme statistics due to global warming is to gain insights into the underlying physical generating mechanisms (GMs). Here, the dominant GMs associated with daily P recorded at 2861 gauges in the conterminous United States from 1980 to 2018 were identified from atmospheric reanalyses and publicly available datasets. The GMs include fronts (FRTs), extratropical cyclones (ETCs), atmospheric rivers (ARs), tropical cyclones (TCs), and North American monsoon (NAM). Climatologies of the GM occurrences were developed for the nonzero P (NZP) and annual P maxima (APM) samples, characterizing the marginal and extreme P distributions, respectively. FRT is everywhere the most frequent (45%–75%) GM of NZP followed by ETC (12%–33%). The FRT contribution declines for APM (19%–66%), which are dominated by AR (50%–65%) in western regions and affected by TC (10%–18%) in southern and eastern regions. The GM frequencies exhibit trends with the same signs over large regions, which are not statistically significant except for an increase in FRT (TC) frequency in the northeast (central region). Two-sample tests showed well-defined spatial patterns with regions where 1) both the marginal and extreme P distributions of the two dominant GMs likely belong to different statistical populations and 2) only the marginal or extreme distributions could be considered statistically different. These results were interpreted through L-moments and parametric distributions that adequately model NZP and APM frequency. Abstract

The National Water Model (NWM) will provide the next generation of operational streamflow forecasts across the United States (U.S.) using the WRF‐Hydro hydrologic model. In this study, we propose a strategy to calibrate 10 parameters of WRF‐Hydro that control runoff generation during floods and snowmelt seasons, and due to baseflow. We focus on the Oak Creek Basin (820 km2), an unregulated mountainous sub‐watershed of the Salt and Verde River Basins in Arizona, which are the largest source of water supply for the Phoenix Metropolitan area. We calibrate the model against discharge observations at the outlet in 2008–2011, and validate it at two stream gauging stations in 2012–2016. After bias correcting the precipitation forcings, we sequentially modify the model parameters controlling distinct runoff generation processes in the basin. We find that capturing the deep drainage to the aquifer is crucial to improve the simulation of all processes and that this flux is mainly controlled by the SLOPE parameter. Performance metrics indicate that snowmelt, baseflow, and floods due to winter storms are simulated fairly well, while flood peaks caused by summer thunderstorms are severely underestimated. We suggest the use of spatially variable soil depth to enhance the simulation of these processes. This work supports the ongoing calibration effort of the NWM by testing WRF‐Hydro in a watershed with a large variety of runoff mechanisms that are representative of several basins in the southwestern U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

49. Propagation of radar rainfall uncertainties into urban pluvial flood modeling during the North American monsoon

Abstract

Pluvial flooding in urban regions is a natural hazard that has been rarely investigated. Here, we evaluate the utility of three radar (Stage IV, Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor or MRMS, and gauge-corrected MRMS or GCMRM) quantitative precipitation estimates (QPEs) and the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) hydrologic���hydraulic model to simulate pluvial flooding during the North American monsoon in Phoenix. We focus on an urban catchment of 2.38 km2 and, for four storms, we simulate a set of flooding metrics using the original QPEs and an ensemble of 100 QPEs characterizing radar uncertainty through a statistical error model. We find that Stage IV QPEs are the most accurate, while MRMS QPEs are positively biased and their utility to simulate flooding increases with the gauge correction done for GCMRMS. For all radar products, simulated flood metrics have lower uncertainty than QPEs as a result of rainfall���runoff transformation. By relying on extensive precipitation and basin datasets, this work provides useful insights for urban flood predictions.
