Aim This study assessed the validity and reliability of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale‐Japanese Version. Methods The original Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale was translated into Japanese, and Japanese items were back‐translated to English to confirm the accuracy of the translation. A total of 870 public health nurses from the Tohoku region in Japan completed the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale‐Japanese Version. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted to identify the number of components. Moreover, 351 public health nurses from the Saitama prefecture in Japan also completed the scale. A confirmatory factor analysis was performed with the factor structure identified in the exploratory factor analysis. Results The exploratory factor analysis identified two components: one associated with client‐related distress and the other with trauma‐related distress. The confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the two‐factor structure. The two‐factor structure model was better than the three‐factor model presented in the original validation study for the English version of the scale. The two‐factor model had good internal consistency for the overall product and the subscales. Pearson correlations showed that this model had good convergent validity against the Maslach Burnout Inventory, a psychological measure similar to the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale. Finally, the two‐factor model had good discriminant validity against the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Conclusion This study identified two components of the Secondary Traumatic Stress Scale‐Japanese Version that differ from the three components found in the original English version. Background Child abuse is a risk factor for mood disorders, and linked to decreased DNA methylation (DNAm) of FKBP5 intron 7 through interactions with the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs1360780. However, no study has investigated which specific subtypes of child abuse are related to decreased DNAm of FKBP5 intron 7 in mood disorders. We therefore aimed to examine the relationship among various subtypes of child abuse, rs1360780, and the DNAm level of FKBP5 intron 7. Methods A total of 190 subjects (87 patients with major depressive disorder [MDD], 61 patients with bipolar disorder [BD], and 42 healthy controls) participated. The Child Abuse and Trauma Scale (CATS) was used to evaluate child abuse. Whole blood was processed for genotyping, and pyrosequencing was conducted to assess the DNAm level of FKBP5 intron 7. A multiple regression analysis was used to analyze the DNAm level as a dependent variable, and the CATS subtypes and rs1360780 were used as independent variables. Results Emotional abuse/neglect, one of the specific subtypes of child abuse, was related to lower DNAm of FKBP5 intron 7 interacting with rs1360780 in the BD patients. There were no significant results in the MDD patients or the controls. Limitations Since the study was limited to Japanese individuals, particularly those with MDD and BD, the findings are not generalizable. Furthermore, as child abuse was measured retrospectively, there may be recall bias. Conclusions This finding indicates that a specific subtype of child abuse may play an important role in the development of BD.

To compile the findings of studies assessing emotional and behavioral changes in the survivors of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, we performed a systematic review in August 2019 using four literature databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, and ICHUSHI). Peer-reviewed manuscripts, either in English or Japanese, were included in the searches. Sixty-one studies were retrieved for the review. Of these, 41 studies (67.2%) assessed emotional consequences, 28 studies (45.9%) evaluated behavioral consequences, and 8 studies (13.1%) evaluated both emotional and behavioral outcomes. The main research topic in emotional change was radiation exposure-associated risk perception, as reported in 15 studies. This risk perception included immediate health effects (eg, acute radiation syndrome) as well as future health effects (eg, future cancer and genetic effects). Lowered subjective well-being was reported in eight studies. Six studies reported perceived discrimination/stigmatization in the disaster survivors. The most critical behavioral change was an increase in suicides compared with residents in the whole of Japan or affected by the earthquake and tsunami, but not by the nuclear disaster. Increased rate of alcohol and tobacco use was reported, although the effect on one’s health was inconsistent. As a conclusion, the Fukushima nuclear disaster survivors suffered issues in risk perception, well-being, stigmatization, and alcohol/tobacco use in the first 8 years after the disaster. The present study is important in order to better understand the emotional and behavioral responses to future nuclear/radiological disasters as well as other “invisible” disasters, such as chemical and biological public health crises.

BackgroundFirst responders to disasters are at risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The trajectories of post-traumatic stress symptom severity differ among individuals, even if they are exposed to similar events. These trajectories have not yet been reported in non-Western first responders.AimsWe aimed to explore post-traumatic stress symptom severity trajectories and their risk factors in first responders to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE) – a historically large earthquake that resulted in a tsunami and a nuclear disaster.MethodA total of 55 632 Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) personnel dispatched to the GEJE were enrolled in this 7-year longitudinal cohort study. PTSD symptom severity was measured using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised. Trajectories were identified using latent growth mixture models (LGMM). Nine potential risk factors for the symptom severity trajectories were analysed using multinomial logistic regression.ResultsFive symptom severity trajectories were identified: ‘resilient’ (54.8%), ‘recovery’ (24.6%), ‘incomplete recovery’ (10.7%), ‘late-onset’ (5.7%), and ‘chronic’ (4.3%). The main risk factors for the four non-resilient trajectories were older age, personal disaster experiences and working conditions. These working conditions included duties involving body recovery or radiation exposure risk, longer deployment length, later or no post-deployment leave and longer post-deployment overtime.ConclusionsThe majority of first responders to GEJE were resilient and developed few or no PTSD symptoms. A substantial minority experienced late-onset and chronic symptom severity trajectories. The identified risk factors can inform policies for prevention, early detection and intervention in individuals at risk of developing symptomatic trajectories.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has profoundly affected the mental health of both infected and uninfected people. Although most psychiatric disorders have highly overlapping genetic and pathogenic backgrounds, most studies investigating the impact of the pandemic have examined only single psychiatric disorders. It is necessary to examine longitudinal trajectories of factors that modulate psychiatric states across multiple dimensions. About 2274 Japanese citizens participated in online surveys presented in December 2019 (before the pandemic), August 2020, Dec 2020, and April 2021. These surveys included nine questionnaires on psychiatric symptoms, such as depression and anxiety. Multidimensional psychiatric time-series data were then decomposed into four principal components. We used generalized linear models to identify modulating factors for the effects of the pandemic on these components. The four principal components can be interpreted as a general psychiatric burden, social withdrawal, alcohol-related problems, and depression/anxiety. Principal components associated with general psychiatric burden and depression/anxiety peaked during the initial phase of the pandemic. They were further exacerbated by the economic burden the pandemic imposed. In contrast, principal components associated with social withdrawal showed a delayed peak, with human relationships as an important risk modulating factor. In addition, being female was a risk factor shared across all components. Our results show that COVID-19 has imposed a large and varied burden on the Japanese population since the commencement of the pandemic. Although components related to the general psychiatric burden remained elevated, peak intensities differed between components related to depression/anxiety and those related to social withdrawal. These results underline the importance of using flexible monitoring and mitigation strategies for mental problems, according to the phase of the pandemic.

Aims: To investigate the influence of body mass index (BMI) on the association between psychological stress and physical fitness. Methods: A population of 4,080 military subjects in Taiwan was divided to three groups according to the BMI ≥27.0 kg/m2 (obesity), 24.0-26.9 kg/m2 (overweight) and 18.5-23.9 kg/m2 (normal weight). Normal, slight, and great psychological stress was evaluated by the Brief Symptoms Rating Scale (BSRS-5) score ≤5, 6-9, and ≥10, respectively. Aerobic and anaerobic fitness were respectively evaluated by time for a 3000-meter run and numbers of 2-minute sit-ups and 2-minute push-ups. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) with adjustments for age and sex was used to determine the relationship. Results: The mean time (sec) for a 3000-meter run (standard error) under slight and great stress differed from that under normal stress in the normal weight (881.0 (11.0) and 877.9 (5.8) vs. 862.2 (1.7), p=0.089 and 0.0088, respectively) and in the obesity (928.1 (16.8) and 921.8 (10.7) vs. 895.2 (1.6), p=0.054 and 0.016, respectively), while the differences were not significant in the overweight (877.1 (12.7) and 877.5 (7.1) vs. 867.1 (2.1), both p >0.5). The impacts of the BMI on 2-minute sit-ups had a similar pattern with that on a 3000-meter run whereas the impact of the BMI on 2-minute push-ups was insignificant. Conclusions: Mental stress may not affect physical fitness in overweight military personnel. The mechanism is not clear and should be further investigated.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to predict increased alcohol and tobacco use in Fukushima nuclear power plant (NPP) workers 3 years after a nuclear disaster. METHODS Surveys were conducted in two postdisaster waves (Wave 1: 2 to 3 months; Wave 2: 32 months). Adjusted risk ratio (aRR) was computed to assess the covariates of increased alcohol and tobacco use in Wave 2. RESULTS Increased alcohol use was associated with age of 29 years or less [aRR (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.26 (1.01 to 1.57)], major property loss [1.25 (95% CI 1.02 to 1.55)], and high posttraumatic stress responses (PTSRs) [1.34 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.67)] in Wave 1. AIM The importance of family care during international deployment is emphasized within military organizations, but mental health interactions between deployed personnel and their spouses have not yet been assessed. This study addressed this gap by examining couples' mental health throughout a deployment period. METHODS The mental health of 324 spousal dyads of Japan Self-Defense Forces personnel dispatched for a half-year United Nations Disengagement Observer Force mission was examined, using longitudinal data derived from a survey at four time points: one-month pre-deployment, initial deployment, middle deployment, and immediately after homecoming. The 30-item General Health Questionnaire was used to evaluate general psychological distress, with high scores (≥7) indicating adverse mental health. Military personnel have greater psychological stress and are at higher suicide attempt risk compared with the general population. High mental stress may cause suicide ideations which are crucially driving suicide attempts. However, traditional statistical methods could only find a moderate degree of correlation between psychological stress and suicide ideation in non-psychiatric individuals. This article utilizes machine learning techniques including logistic regression, decision tree, random forest, gradient boosting regression tree, support vector machine and multilayer perceptron to predict the presence of suicide ideation by six important psychological stress domains of the military males and females. The accuracies of all the six machine learning methods are over 98%. Among them, the multilayer perceptron and support vector machine provide the best predictions of suicide ideation approximately to 100%. As compared with the BSRS-5 score ≥7, a conventional criterion, for the presence of suicide ideation ≥1, the proposed algorithms can improve the performances of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision, the AUC of ROC curve and the AUC of PR curve up to 5.7%, 35.9%, 4.6%, 65.2%, 4.3% and 53.2%, respectively; and for the presence of more severely intense suicide ideation ≥2, the improvements are 6.1%, 26.2%, 5.8%, 83.5%, 2.8% and 64.7%, respectively.

To integrate scholastic literature regarding the prevalence and characteristics of the psychological consequences faced by survivors of the 2011 Fukushima earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster, we conducted a systematic review of survivor studies concerning the Fukushima disaster. In August 2019, four literature databases (PubMed, PsycINFO, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, and ICHUSHI) were used in the literature search. Peer-reviewed manuscripts reporting psychological consequences, either in English or Japanese, were selected. A total of 79 studies were selected for the review. Twenty-four studies (30.4%) were conducted as part of the Fukushima Health Management Survey—large-scale cohort study recruiting the residents of the entire Fukushima prefecture. Study outcomes were primarily nonspecific psychological distress, depressive symptoms, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and anxiety symptoms. The rates of high-risk individuals determined by the studies varied significantly owing to methodological differences. Nevertheless, these rates were mostly high (nonspecific psychological distress, 8.3%-65.1%; depressive symptoms, 12%-52.0%; and post-traumatic stress symptoms, 10.5%-62.6%). Many studies focused on vulnerable populations such as children, mothers of young children, evacuees, and nuclear power plant workers. However, few studies reported on the intervention methods used or their effect on the survivors. As a conclusion, high rates of individuals with psychological conditions, as well as a wide range of mental conditions, were reported among the Fukushima nuclear disaster survivors in the first 8 years after the disaster. These findings demonstrate the substantial impact of this compound disaster, especially in the context of a nuclear catastrophe.

Life-threatening experiences can result in the development of post-traumatic stress disorder. We have developed an animal model for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using a shuttle box in rats. In this paradigm, the rats were exposed to inescapable foot-shock stress (IS) in a shuttle box, and then an avoidance/escape task was performed in the same box 2 weeks after IS. A previous study using this paradigm revealed that environmental enrichment (EE) ameliorated avoidance/numbing-like behaviors, but not hyperarousal-like behaviors, and EE also elevated hippocampal brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression. However, the differential effects of EE components, i.e., running wheel (RW) or toy rotation, on PTSD-like behaviors has remained unclear. In this experiment, we demonstrated that RW, toy rotation, and EE (containing RW and toy rotation) ameliorated avoidance/numbing-like behaviors, induced learning of avoidance responses, and improved depressive-like behaviors in traumatized rats. The RW increased the hippocampal mRNA expression of neurotrophic factors, especially BDNF and glial-cell derived neurotrophic factor. Toy rotation influenced FK506 binding protein 5 mRNA expression, which is believed to be a regulator of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis system, in the hippocampus and amygdala. This is the first report to elucidate the differential mechanistic effects of RW and toy rotation. The former appears to exert its effects via neurotrophic factors, while the latter exerts its effects via the HPA axis. Further studies will lead to a better understanding of the influence of environmental factors on PTSD.

To evaluate the correlates of psychological responses in dentists who conducted disaster victim identification (DVI) in Fukushima following the 2011 earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disaster.Self-report questionnaires were administered to 49 male dentists six to nine months after the disaster. Psychological distress and posttraumatic stress were measured using the General Health Questionnaire-30 (GHQ-30) and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), respectively. Independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, participant disaster exposures, DVI-related exposures, and fear of radiation exposure during DVI. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was performed to examine independent-dependent variable relations.Thirty-eight participants (77.6%) had examined ≥ 40 corpses, 20 (40.8%) reported ≥ 4 corpse-related exposures, and six (12.2%) reported ≥ 5 gruesome corpse exposures. Mean (SD) GHQ-30 and IES-R scores were 5.08 (5.31) and 9.90 (10.1), respectively. Higher levels of psychological distress were associated with younger age (adjusted β = -0.29), extensive property loss (β = 0.34), and anxiety for the future (β = 0.33). Higher levels of posttraumatic stress were associated with extensive property loss (adjusted RDentists' psychological burden was associated with disaster, but not DVI, exposures.

Background: First responders are at risk for developing symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Especially, body recovery duties and nuclear disaster response were known as challenging missions that can induce severe adverse psychological responses for a long time. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake (GEJE), an unprecedented complex disaster (i.e., earthquake/tsunami/nuclear accident), provided us with a unique opportunity to explore these risk factors and their relative influence for PTSD. Methods: Of approximately 70 000 eligible Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) first responders, 56 388 enrolled in this 6-year prospective cohort study. The data were collected at eight time points: one, six, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, and 72 months post-mission completion. The Impact of Event Scale–Revised assessed PTSD symptoms; scores of ≥25 were defined as probable PTSD. Professional disaster experience (i.e., duties with body recovery or radiation exposure risk), sociodemographic factors (e.g., disaster–victim status) and working conditions (e.g., deployment length) were investigated. Cox proportional hazard models assessed the risk factors for incidences of probable PTSD. Findings: The cumulative incidence of probable PTSD was 6·75%. The classes categorized by baseline severity of PTSD symptoms demonstrated a high degree of rank-order stability over time. Rather than professional disaster experience, sociodemographic factors and working conditions showed strong independent association with the incidence of probable PTSD: disaster-victim status (hazard ratio [HR]=1·96; 95% CI 1·72-2·24), deployment length of ≥3 months (vs.

Background We previously reported that child abuse indirectly predicts the diagnosis of major depressive disorder (MDD) or bipolar disorder (BP) based on higher scores of affective temperaments; however, the subtypes of child abuse have not been examined sufficiently. Therefore, in the present study, we used the reclassified version of the Child Abuse and Trauma Scale (CATS) to determine how the subtypes of child abuse affect affective temperaments. Methods A total of 502 participants (212 healthy controls, 163 patients with MDD and 127 patients with BP) were administered the Japanese version of the CATS; the Japanese version of the Temperament Evaluation of Memphis, Pisa, Paris, and San Diego Autoquestionnaire; and the Japanese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Data were analyzed by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, as well as by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results A five-factor structure was appropriate for the CATS. The MDD group scored significantly higher on all subtypes of the reclassified CATS than did the control group. Among the subscales of the reclassified CATS, physical abuse and loneliness/psychological stress were significant predictors of affective temperaments, although all subscales were significantly associated with affective temperaments compared to the original CATS. Limitations Since child abuse was assessed retrospectively, there might be recall bias. Furthermore, as the study was limited to Japanese individuals, particularly those with mood disorders, the findings might not be generalizable. BackgroundThe Fukushima Daiichi and Daini Nuclear Power Plant workers experienced multiple stressors as both victims and onsite workers after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and subsequent nuclear accidents. Previous studies found that disaster-related exposures, including discrimination/slurs, were associated with their mental health. Their long-term impact has yet to be investigated.MethodA total of 968 plant workers (Daiichi, n = 571; Daini, n = 397) completed self-written questionnaires 2–3 months (time 1) and 14–15 months (time 2) after the disaster (response rate 55.0%). Sociodemographics, disaster-related experiences, and peritraumatic distress were assessed at time 1. At time 1 and time 2, general psychological distress (GPD) and post-traumatic stress response (PTSR) were measured, respectively, using the K6 scale and Impact of Event Scale Revised. We examined multivariate covariates of time 2 GPD and PTSR, adjusting for autocorrelations in the hierarchical multiple regression analyses.ResultsHigher GPD at time 2 was predicted by higher GPD at time 1 (β = 0.491, p < 0.001) and discrimination/slurs experiences at time 1 (β = 0.065, p = 0.025, adjusted R2 = 0.24). Higher PTSR at time 2 was predicted with higher PTSR at time 1 (β = 0.548, p < 0.001), higher age (β = 0.085, p = 0.005), and discrimination/slurs experiences at time 1 (β = 0.079, p = 0.003, adjusted R2 = 0.36).ConclusionsHigher GPD at time 2 was predicted by higher GPD and discrimination/slurs experience at time 1. Higher PTSR at time 2 was predicted by higher PTSR, higher age, and discrimination/slurs experience at time 1.

Although several recent studies have suggested that neuroinflammation plays a role in depression, both medication and neuroinflammatory preventive strategies have been poorly investigated. Recent studies have indicated that preconditioning with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) reduces the damage that occurs following ischemic stroke and brain trauma. However, to date, the effects of LPS preconditioning on psychiatric symptoms have not been reported. Thus, we assessed gene expression and behavioral changes affected by preconditioning with low-dose (LD) LPS in male mice with systemic inflammation induced by administration of high-dose (HD) LPS. mRNA expression analyses of cytokine-, glial-, and oxidative stress-associated genes revealed that majority of these genes responded to HD LPS. Differential gene expression in the presence and absence of LD LPS preconditioning, identified a subset of genes that may contribute to the mechanism of LPS preconditioning in the brain. Notably, LPS preconditioning attenuated an increase in expression of the astrocyte marker Gfap caused by systemic inflammation, suggesting that astrocytes have a key role in endotoxin tolerance in the brain induced by LPS preconditioning. As increased astrocyte in the brain of patients with depression is suggested to contribute to the pathophysiology of major depression, LPS preconditioning might be applicable to the prevention and treatment of depression. Unfortunately, in this study, LPS preconditioning did not show a reversal effect on behavior decline due to high-dose LPS-induced systemic inflammation. Alternative aspects of behavioral changes should be assessed to identify behavioral components that are affected by LPS preconditioning. Nonetheless, the findings in the present study indicate the possibility of the mechanism of endotoxin tolerance induction in the brain via astrocyte regulation by LPS preconditioning. Since there has been reported pharmacological significance of astrocytes in psychiatric disorders, regulation of endotoxin tolerance might be a key method to control psychiatric symptoms.

Our objective was to test whether the Tachikawa Resilience Scale (TRS), developed to measure the resilience of Japanese individuals, is useful for evaluating the resilience of the JGSDF. Patients and methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of 353 JGSDF peacekeeping personnel engaged in the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan from November 2015 to May 2016. We evaluated resilience using two psychological measures: the TRS and the Resilience Competence Scale – Japanese Short Version (RCS-JS). To verify the construct validity of the TRS, we performed exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. We subsequently conducted hierarchical multivariate regression analysis to evaluate the relationship of the TRS and the RCS-JS with psychological distress measured by the Japanese version of the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale. Results: Of those recruited, 281 (79.6%) agreed to participate. The exploratory factor analysis revealed a one-factor model of the TRS. The confirmatory factor analysis model showed good fit (ratio of χ2 to the degrees of freedom =1.409, P=0.105, comparative fit index =0.994, root mean square error of approximation =0.038). Both the TRS and the RCS-JS showed a significant inverse correlation with the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, and the regression coefficient of the TRS was equivalent to that of the RCS-JS. Conclusion: We confirmed the construct validity and reliability of the TRS when applied to the JGSDF, and demonstrated the usefulness of the TRS in this population. Background Disaster workers suffer from psychological distress not only through the direct experience of traumatic situations but also through the indirect process of aiding disaster victims. This distress, called secondary traumatic stress, is linked to dispositional empathy, which is the tendency for individuals to imagine and experience the feelings and experiences of others. However, the association between secondary traumatic stress and dispositional empathy remains understudied. Methods To examine the relationship between dispositional empathy and mental health among disaster workers, we collected data from 227 Japan Ground Self-Defense Force personnel who engaged in international disaster relief activities in the Philippines following Typhoon Yolanda in 2013. The Impact of Event Scale-Revised and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale were used to evaluate posttraumatic stress responses (PTSR) and general psychological distress (GPD), respectively. Approximately 70,000 Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) personnel were dispatched in the wake of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and the tsunami and nuclear disaster that followed. This study was conducted to evaluate the mental health of the JGSDF personnel and the correlates.Data collected from 56,753 participants at three time points (one, six, and 12 months after mission completion) were analyzed. Those who scored 25 or more points on the Impact of Events Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K10) were allocated into the high posttraumatic stress response (high-PTSR) group, and the high general psychological distress (high-GPD) group, respectively.The multiple logistic regression analysis identified the following factors as the significant risk factor related to high-PTSR or high-GPD status, with odds ratios of 2.0 or higher: deployment length of three or more months, being personally affected by the disaster, and being overworked continuously for three or more months after mission completion. No significant association was observed for duties with radiation exposure risk.Our findings suggest that disaster workers may be able to conduct disaster relief activities more safely with mission-related considerations of shorter deployment length and recognizing the effects on personnel personally affected by the disaster, in addition to avoiding overworking personnel after mission completion.

Recently, breeding programs have attempted to produce high growth rates for shorter rotation cycles in plantation trees. In these trees, the ratio of juvenile wood increases; thus, the juvenile wood properties should be improved for structural use. To this end, it is important to understand the influences on juvenile wood properties precisely. In this study, we report on the indole acetic acid (IAA) amounts of juvenile sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) trees in September and compare the IAA amounts to those in mature trees. The IAA amounts at the lower trunks in juvenile trees were significantly larger than those in mature trees and the IAA amounts decreased with tree height. In each stand, except a mature tree stand, there is no significant effect of IAA amounts on latewood width and MFA. Synthesis and anion recognition properties of 2,2′-binaphthalene derivatives bearing two thiourea (1) and urea (2) groups at 8- and 8′-positions were studied. The structure of receptor 1 was determined by X-ray crystallography. UV–vis spectra of the receptors showed characteristic changes around 300–400 nm through isosbestic points upon the addition of biologically relevant anions such as acetate, dihydrogenphosphate, and chloride in MeCN and DMSO due to restriction of the rotation around the single bond connecting two naphthyl moieties by cooperative guest binding of two recognition sites. Job’s plots showed 1:1 complexation for guest anions. The fluorescence quantum yields of free form of 1 and 2 in MeCN were determined to be 0.021 and 0.57, respectively. The fluorescence intensities of the receptors diminished upon the addition of anions in MeCN. The association constants of receptors 1 and 2 were one or two orders of magnitude greater than the corresponding monothiourea and urea receptors 3 and 4 indicating cooperative hydrogen bonding with guest anions. The selectivity trends of association of anions were F−>AcO−>H2PO4−>Cl−>>HSO4−≈NO3−≈Br−≈I− for 1, and F−>AcO−≈Cl−>H2PO4−>Br−>HSO4−>I−≈NO3− for 2. Receptor 2 showed remarkable Cl− selectivity presumably owing to suitable orientation for effective hydrogen bond formation with Cl−.

日本における造林樹種としてのslash pineの有用性を探ることを目的に，南九州で生育した46年生slash pineについて年輪形成と木材材質を明らかにした。slash pineは，スギやヒノキに比べて晩材形成期間においてより活発に細胞分裂をおこなうことがわかった。容積密度数および曲げ性能は，北米産slash pine材とほぼ同じであった。ミクロフィブリル傾角および晩材仮道管長さでは，胸高直径の大きなslash pineにおいて，未成熟材から成熟材への移行がより早い時期におこり，成熟材部での変動が小さかった。日本におけるslash pineでの木材生産は，スギに比べてより効率的に力学的な性質の優れた木材を安定して生産できると考えた。

Objective: When dissimilar figures are presented to each eye individually, perception alternates spontaneously between each monocular view. This phenomenon, known as binocular rivalry, has been used as a powerful tool to investigate conscious visual awareness. Of clinical relevance, Pettigrew and Miller (Proc Biol Sci 1998; 265: 2141-2148) found slow perceptual alternation rates in patients with bipolar I disorder (BD-I). For a better understanding of differences between BD-I and bipolar II disorder (BD-II), we examined whether perceptual alternation rates of binocular rivalry differ between the two subtypes of bipolar disorder. Methods: The subjects comprised 25 healthy controls, 11 patients with BD-I, and 17 patients with BD-II. They underwent binocular rivalry examination. One-way analysis of variance was conducted to determine differences in the phase duration of binocular rivalry between the control, BD-I, and BD-II groups. Results: Significant differences were observed in the mean phase duration of binocular rivalry between the groups. Although the medication administered did not differ significantly between the BD-I and BD-II patients, the phase duration was significantly longer among the BD-I patients than the BD-II patients and controls, whereas no significant difference was observed in the phase duration between the BD-II patients and controls. Conclusion: The present results reveal a significant difference in the mean phase duration of binocular rivalry between subjects with BD-I and those with BD-II, suggesting the presence of some neurobiological difference between these two subtypes of bipolar disorder.

This phenomenon, binocular rivalry, has been suggested to depend on serotonergic neural systems.To investigate the relationship between binocular rivalry and serotonergic neural systems in more detail, we measured the perceptual alternation rate and rhythmicity of binocular rivalry under the influence of the 5-HT(1A) agonist tandospirone.Fifteen healthy volunteers were tested under placebo and 60 mg tandospirone conditions using the single-blind method. The perceptual alternation rate and rhythmicity of binocular rivalry were measured at pre-administration and at 90, 180, and 360 min post-administration.Compared to placebo, the administration of tandospirone decreased the rate and rhythmicity of perceptual switching significantly at 90 and 180 min post-administration in a manner that is consistent with its pharmacokinetics.The present results suggest that the 5-HT(1A) neural pathways, mainly located in the mesolimbic system and brainstem, may play a crucial role as an oscillator in perceptual rivalry alternations.

Background: Previous surveys have addressed the use and perceived utility of diagnostic systems but not psychiatrists' preferences and expectations about them. This paper attempts to close that gap with data from surveys of psychiatrists in three culturally, socio-economically, and geographically diverse countries. The views of psychiatrists from Brazil, Japan, and New Zealand were sought on global aspects of diagnostic systems and their preferred classificatory systems. Methods: Although the same questionnaire was used in all three countries, the sampling techniques and procedures varied across them. In Brazil and New Zealand, a postal survey was carried out, whereas in Japan a Web-based approach was adopted. Summary United Nations peacekeeping personnel face numerous stressors due to their challenging deployments. Past studies have had inconsistent results regarding whether or not their deployment experience affects their mental health outcomes. ObjectiveWe sought to elucidate news article reporting of adverse public psychosocial behaviors, in particular, rumor-related coverage (eg, panic, demagoguery) and exclusive behavior coverage (negative behaviors, eg, discrimination, bullying) during the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) influenza pandemic in Japan.MethodsWe examined 154 Internet news-site articles reporting adverse public psychosocial responses in the first 60 days of the outbreak. Rumor-related coverage and exclusive behavior coverage were dichotomously coded as included or not. Moreover, we assessed whether or not health information (eg, coping methods, virus toxicity information) or emphasis on information quality (eg, importance of information, cautions about overreactions) were simultaneously reported.ResultsRumor-related coverage (n=120, 77.9%) was less likely to simultaneously report public health information (eg, toxicity information, health support information, and cautions about overreactions; PPConclusionsRumor-related coverage was less likely to have accompanying public health information, whereas exclusive behavior coverage was more likely to include it. During public health crises, it is essential to understand that rumors and exclusive behaviors have adverse effects on the public and that accompanying public health information may help people take proactive coping actions. A novel artificial receptor based on 2,2′-binaphthalene skeleton bearing two thiourea groups was prepared via nickel(II)-catalyzed homocoupling of the corresponding bromide. The receptor showed high binding ability for F− and AcO− in acetonitrile.

Objective: Disaster relief workers are potentially exposed to severe stressors on the job, resulting in a variety of psychological responses. This study aims to clarify the psychological effects of disaster relief activities on Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) personnel following the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Method: A self-report questionnaire was administered to 606 JGSDF personnel one month after completing the disaster relief mission. Posttraumatic stress responses and general psychological distress were assessed using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) and the K10 scales. Associations between outcome variables and independent variables (age, gender, military rank, length of deployment, and exposure to dead bodies) were measured with univariate analyses and subsequent multiple logistic regression analyses. Results: The mean (± SD) IES-R score was 6.2 (± 8.1), and the mean K10 score was 12.8 (± 4.4). In the univariate analyses, exposure to dead bodies and age were identified as significant factors for IES-R and K10 scores, (p < 0.01). However, the multiple logistic regression analyses did not reveal any significant factors although body handlers’ exposure approached significance for IES-R. Conclusions: The subjects reported very low psychological responses despite the severe nature of their disaster relief activities. Several factors may account for the low levels of psychological distress and posttraumatic symptoms observed in this study.

Family history and poor preliteracy skills (referred to here as familial and behavioral risk, respectively) are critical predictors of developmental dyslexia. This study systematically investigated the independent contribution of familial and behavioral risks on brain structures, which had not been explored in past studies. We also examined the differential effects of maternal versus paternal history on brain morphometry, and familial risk dimensionally versus categorically, which were also novel aspects of the study. We assessed 51 children (5 to 6 years of age) with varying degrees of familial and behavioral risks for developmental dyslexia and examined associations with brain morphometry. We found that greater maternal history of reading disability was associated with smaller bilateral prefrontal and parieto-temporal gray, but not white matter volumes. Regressing out behavioral risk, socioeconomic status, and maternal education and other confounds did not change the results. No such relationship was observed for paternal reading history and behavioral risk. Results of cortical surface area and thickness further showed that there was a significant negative relationship between cortical surface area (but not thickness) and greater severity of maternal history, in particular within the left inferior parietal lobule, suggesting prenatal influence of maternal history on children's brain morphometry. The results suggested greater maternal, possibly prenatal, influence on language-related brain structures. These results help to guide future neuroimaging research focusing on environmental and genetic influences and provide new information that may help predict which child will develop dyslexia in the future.

Recent advances in social cognitive neuroscience have led to the concept of the "social brain". The social brain includes neural processes specialized for processing social information necessary for the recognition of self and others, and interpersonal relationships. Because of its unique behavioral phenotypic features which includes 'hypersociability', Williams syndrome has gained popularity among social cognitive neuroscientists. Individuals with Williams syndrome share the same genetic risk factor for cognitive-behavioral dysfunction utilizing brain imaging to elucidate endophenotype provides us with an unprecendented opportunity to study gene, brain and behavior relationships especially those related to social cognition. In this review, we provide an overview of neuroimaging studies on social cognition in Williams syndrome and discuss the neural basis of the social brain.
