Abstract

Cloud gaming enables playing high end games, originally designed for PC or game console setups, on low end devices, such as net-books and smartphones, by offloading graphics rendering to GPU powered cloud servers. However, transmitting the high end graphics requires a large amount of available network bandwidth, even though it is a compressed video stream. Foveated video encoding (FVE) reduces the bandwidth requirement by taking advantage of the non-uniform acuity of human visual system and by knowing where the user is looking. We have designed and implemented a system for cloud gaming with foveated graphics using a consumer grade real-time eye tracker and an open source cloud gaming platform. In this article, we describe the system and its evaluation through measurements with representative games from different genres to understand the effect of parameterization of the FVE scheme on bandwidth requirements and to understand its feasibility from the latency perspective. We also present results from a user study. The results suggest that it is possible to find a "sweet spot" for the encoding parameters so that the users hardly notice the presence of foveated encoding but at the same time the scheme yields most of the bandwidth savings achievable., Comment: Submitted for publication in ACM TOMM

Abstract

Good user experience with interactive cloud-based multimedia applications, such as cloud gaming and cloud-based VR, requires low end-to-end latency and large amounts of downstream network bandwidth at the same time. In this paper, we present a foveated video streaming system for cloud gaming. The system adapts video stream quality by adjusting the encoding parameters on the fly to match the player's gaze position. We conduct measurements with a prototype that we developed for a cloud gaming system in conjunction with eye tracker hardware. Evaluation results suggest that such foveated streaming can reduce bandwidth requirements by even more than 50% depending on parametrization of the foveated video coding and that it is feasible from the latency perspective., Comment: Submitted to: IEEE 19th International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing

Abstract

This work proposes a quality-oriented multimedia delivery framework that tackles the issue of optimizing video broadcasting and interactive video applications over packet networks with respect to both resource utilization and user perceived quality. Previous work showed that the quality of service requirements of multimedia applications can be optimally satisfied by pipeline forwarding of packets by keeping delay controlled and resource utilization high, while enabling highly sealable network devices. These properties are key in today networks to enable valuable (i.e., chargeable for) services and to avoid that the traffic increase due to broadband video either collapses existing networks or forces the deployment of high cost, cutting-edge technology to properly upgrade them. However, the current Internet is not based on such technology and its incremental introduction raises questions on how to handle video packets generated by pipeline-forwarding-unaware sources. This work proposes to use the perceptual importance of the carried video samples to determine which packets shall be transferred with pipeline forwarding--thus receiving deterministic service---and which with a traditional, e.g., best effort or differentiated service. Two new scheduling algorithms are proposed, with an extensive analysis and simulation results, which also investigate the impact of the encoding scheme. Performance bounds have been established by comparing the proposed algorithms with an exhaustive-search approach, showing that the performance is within 2 dB PSNR from the optimal solution in the worst case. Abstract

International audience; This work presents a large dataset of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) sequences aimed at creating a reference for researchers involved in video quality research. Ten sequences with different characteristics have been encoded with different parameters, resulting in 59520 videos which have been processed to provide objective quality measurements at frame-level granularity. The ultimate objective is to make this database, which is already publicly available, a reference for researchers involved in designing hybrid video quality measurements, so that it can be used for both investigation and reproduction of results. Besides describing the context and database content, this paper also provides a glimpse on the possible uses of the already available data, as well as the two directions towards which the project is being expanded: incorporating new objective measurements and evaluating quality for corrupted videos with realistic loss traces.

Abstract

International audience; Training, verification, and validation of objective prediction models require well-chosen test stimuli. The measured prediction performance depends largely on the congruence of stimulus selection in the three steps training, verification, and validation. Different stimulus selection criteria are discussed: extracting a representative set of stimuli from the scope of application, spreading the range of application scope with equidistant stimuli, or using stressful stimuli for the prediction algorithm. Nowadays, most databases are too small to sufficiently cover even one of these evaluation types; a large-scale database may solve the problem but requires new statistical methods and understanding of quality evaluation.
