1. A Method for Designing an Optical Clock Beacon to Detect Highly Accurate Image Capture Time

Abstract

Assessing the motion of moving objects from video footage captured using multiple recording devices requires precise timing and location data, which remains equally important in mobile recording systems. Although capturing high-precision clocks and analyzing these images are effective methods for obtaining accurate time information, a definitive method for precisely determining the capture time from images of rapidly time-varying clocks at various exposure durations is currently lacking. This paper introduces a design method for a dynamic optical marker called the Optical Clock Beacon (OCB), which indicates the current time by integrating multiple point light sources. Our goal is to enable accurate determination of the capture time from images. We present a method for estimating this time using image analysis and validate its accuracy. The simplest OCB configuration translates the binary representation of the current time into a Gray code, with each bit’s state indicated by light sources of positive and negative logic. This approach allows the determination of an image capture time with precision matching of the exposure duration. Furthermore, we outline a design strategy that improves the time accuracy by making the light source configuration of each digit redundant, thus providing substantial design flexibility for the OCB. We also detail the prototype hardware and the image analysis system of the developed OCB, demonstrating through evaluation experiments that the anticipated time accuracy is achievable.

Abstract

Both pancreatic stenting and rectal nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) prevent post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis. The aim of the study was to compare post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) prophylaxis using pancreatic stents and/or rectal NSAIDs prospectively.A total of 321 patients undergoing ERCP were studied. Each patient was randomly allocated to receive pancreatic stent placement (PS), 50 mg of rectal diclofenac (NSAID), or both (PS + NSAID) for PEP prophylaxis. The primary outcome was the occurrence rate of PEP, and secondary outcomes included the severity of PEP and serum pancreatic amylase and lipase levels on the day after ERCP.Five patients (PS: 2/101, NSAID: 1/106, PS + NSAID: 2/102) developed PEP, and the overall occurrence rate of PEP was 1.6% (5/309). The occurrence rates of PEP in the PS, NSAID, and PS + NSAID groups were statistically equivalent with an equivalent margin of 10%. The severity of PEP was mild in all 5 patients. Median serum pancreatic amylase and lipase levels in the NSAID group were significantly lower than those in the PS and PS + NSAID groups.Rectal administration of 50 mg of diclofenac may become a first-line therapy for PEP prophylaxis in our country.

Abstract

This paper considers simultaneous control of grasp/manipulation and contact points of an object with the pure rolling contact by two-ngered robot hand. We consider the case where the number of the degrees of freedom (DOF) of each nger is constrained. First, we derive a relationship between the rolling velocity and the motion of the ngers and the object, which determines the number of the DOF of the system. Second, we provide explicit expressions of the contact force and the motion of the ngers and the object, which can be directly used for the simultaneous control. Utilizing the results, we provide a general formulation of a linearizing compensator for the simultaneous control. Controlling the contact points can be realized by making the rolling velocity follow the appropriate trajectory with the nonholonomy of rolling. A numerical example shows the eectiv eness of the method.

Abstract

Clostridium perfringens (C.P) gas gangrene is one of the most fulminant infectious diseases. We encountered fulminant massive gas gangrene in a 56- year-old man with alcoholic liver cirrhosis. The patient died 14 hours after diagnosis of gas gangrene (54 hours after admission). Dramatic changes in abdominal CT imaging revealed development of a massive volume of gas in the intra-portal vein, retroperitoneum and abdominal subcutaneous tissue within 24 hours. We also proved C.P infection by immunohistological staining, leading to a diagnosis of C.P gas gangrene.

6. Association study of the effect of WFS1 polymorphisms on risk of type 2 diabetes in Japanese population

Abstract

Mutations of WFS1 gene cause Wolfram syndrome, which is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by juvenile diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, deafness and diabetes insipidus. The product encoded by WFS1 gene, wolframin, could be involved in ER stress response causing beta-cell loss through impaired cell cycle progression and increased apoptosis. Recently, polymorphisms in the WFS1 gene were strongly associated with type 2 diabetes in Caucasians. The aim of the present study was to examine whether the variants of WFS1 are associated with risk of type 2 diabetes in Japanese individuals. Four single nucleotide polymorphisms, rs6446482, rs12511742, rs1801208 (R456H) and rs734312 (H611R) were genotyped in a total of 536 diabetic patients and 398 nondiabetic control subjects. Among the four variants, rs12511742 showed a marginal association with susceptibility to type 2 diabetes (odds ratio = 1.32, 95% confidence interval = 1.02-1.71, P = 0.033). Carriers of the risk allele at rs12511742 exhibited lower pancreas beta-cell function (P = 0.017). However, this association disappeared after adjustment for sex, age and BMI (Adjusted P = 0.24). Although we found no evidence for a substantial effect of WFS1 polymorphisms on risk of type 2 diabetes or clinical characteristics of diabetic subjects in Japanese population, this gene is still a good candidate for a type 2 diabetes susceptibility gene, potentially, through impaired insulin secretion.

Abstract

Reduction mechanisms of oxygen molecule to water molecules in the fully reduced (FR) and mixed-valence (MV) bovine cytochrome 𝑐 oxidases (C𝑐O) have been systematically examined based on the B3LYP calculations. The catalytic cycle using four electrons and four protons has been also shown consistently. The MV C𝑐O catalyses reduction to produce one water molecule, while the FR C𝑐O catalyses to produce two water molecules. One water molecule is added into vacant space between His240 and His290 in the catalytic site. This water molecule constructs the network of hydrogen bonds of Tyr244, farnesyl ethyl, and Thr316 that is a terminal residue of the K-pathway. It plays crucial roles for the proton transfer to the dioxygen to produce the water molecules in both MV and FR C𝑐Os. Tyr244 functions as a relay of the proton transfer from the K-pathway to the added water molecule, not as donors of a proton and an electron to the dioxygen. The reduction mechanisms of MV and FR C𝑐Os are strictly distinguished. In the FR C𝑐O, the Cu atom at the CuB site maintains the reduced state Cu(I) during the process of formation of first water molecule and plays an electron storage. At the final stage of formation of first water molecule, the Cu(I) atom releases an electron to Fe-O. During the process of formation of second water molecule, the Cu atom maintains the oxidized state Cu(II). In contrast with experimental proposals, the K-pathway functions for formation of first water molecule, while the D-pathway functions for second water molecule. The intermediates, PM, PR, F, and O, obtained in this work are compared with those proposed experimentally.
