3. Non-Equilibrium Ionization States of GRB Environments

Abstract

Iron spectral features are thought to be the best tracer of a progenitor of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). The detections of spectral features such as an iron line and/or a Radiative Recombination edge and Continuum (RRC) were reported in four X-ray afterglows of GRBs. However their properties were different each other burst by burst. For example, Chandra observation of GRB 991216 reported both the strong H-like iron line together with its RRC. On the contrary, Yoshida et al. (2001) report only a detection of the strong RRC in GRB 970828 with ASCA. Since it is difficult to produce the strong RRC, we have to consider special condition for the line and/or the RRC forming region. In this paper, we point out a possibility of a ``non-equilibrium ionization state'' for the line and the RRC forming region., Comment: 10pages, 2figures. Accepted for ApJL. Abstract

We present Suzaku results of a supernova remnant (SNR), G 359.1−0.5, in the direction of the Galactic center region. From the SNR, we have found prominent K-shell lines of highly ionized Si and S ions, together with unusual structures at 2.5–3.0 and 3.1–3.6 keV. No canonical SNR plasma model, in either ionization equilibrium or under-ionization, can explain the structures. The energies and shapes of the structures are similar to those of the radiative transitions of free electrons to the K-shell of He-like Si and S ions (radiative recombination continuum: RRC). The presence of strong RRC structures indicates that the plasma is in over-ionization. In fact, the observed spectrum has been well-fitted with an over-ionized plasma model. The best-fit electron temperature of 0.29 keV is far smaller than the ionization temperature of 0.77 keV, which means that G 359.1−0.5 is in an extreme condition of over-ionization. We report some cautions on the physical parameters, and comment about possible origins for the over-ionized plasma.

Abstract

Observations of intensity transitions in the X-ray emission from the black-hole candidate Cygnus X-1 were made by the Hakucho satellite during the summer of 1980 and are reported here. In addition, the results of hard (20-120 keV) X-ray observations of Cyg X-1 are reported. These data were obtained during the 'high' intensity state by balloon-borne mercuric iodide detectors, and are compared with data obtained at similar energies approximately 1 month earlier (A. Sheepmaker et al., in preparation) during the 'low' intensity state.

Abstract

We observed the X-ray afterglow of GRB 970828 with the Japanese X-ray satellite ASCA. The spectral data displayed a hump around ∼ 5 keV. This hump structure is likely a recombination edge of iron in the vicinity of the source, taking into account the redshift z = 0.9578 found for the likely host galaxy of the associated radio flare. The Radiative Recombination Edge and Continuum model can interpret the spectrum as coming from a highly ionized plasma in a non-equilibrium ionization state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Quasi-hydrostatic intracluster gas under radiative cooling

Abstract

Quasi-hydrostatic cooling of the intracluster gas is studied. In the quasi-hydrostatic model, work done by gravity on the inflow gas with ${\rm d}P \neq 0$, where Pis the gas pressure, is taken into account in the thermal balance. The gas flows in from the outer part so as to compensate the pressure loss of the gas undergoing radiative cooling, but the mass flow is so moderate and smooth that the gas is considered to be quasi-hydrostatic. The temperature of the cooling gas decreases toward the cluster center, but, unlike cooling flows with ${\rm d}P = 0$, approaches a constant temperature of ~$1/3$the temperature of the non-cooling ambient gas. This does not mean that gravitational work cancels out radiative cooling, but means that the temperature of the cooling gas appears to approach a constant value toward the cluster center if the gas maintains the quasi-hydrostatic balance. We discuss the mass flow in quasi-hydrostatic cooling, and compare it with the standard isobaric cooling flow model. We also discuss the implication of $\dot{M}$for the standard cooling flow model.
