A new species, Polygala guilanica (Polygalaceae), is described from Kooh-Roubar, Gasht-Roodkhan protected area in W Guilan province, N Iran. The new species is distinguished based on its prostrate stem; small, lanceolate, ovate and rhombic, sessile leaves; tiny pink-white flowers in lax terminal racemes; 6 or 8 stamens with sessile anthers, a filiform style and brownish seed with 3-lobed caruncle. Detailed morphological description of the new species, photographs and distribution map are provided. Polygala guilanica is compared with the morphologically closest species: P. kurdica, P. hohenackeriana and P. anatolica. An updated identification key is provided for the Iranian species.

Pollen and seed micro-morphological features of six species of Polygala distributed in Iran were examined using light (LM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results show a great pollen morphological variation, which provides helpful data for species delimitation in Polygala. The pollen grains are monad, radially symmetrical, isopolar, polyzonocolporate, medium to large, oblate-spheroidal to prolate-spheroidal in shape. We observed four types of surface sculpture (psilate, psilate to granulate, rugulate-granulate and rugulate) and four types of apocolpial area (psilate with small lumina, reticulate with large lumina, micro-perforate and coarsely regulate and gemmate or granulate with lumina). Moreover, the importance of seed micro-morphological traits in species delimitation have demonstrated based on elaiosome appendages size, number of lobes and their sculpture, seed surface sculpture and trichome type.

The present study was aimed to investigate foliar anatomy and flower, fruit and seed morphology of three subspecies of Agrimonia eupatoria (i.e. A. eupatoria subsp. eupatoria, A. eupatoria subsp. grandis and A. eupatoria subsp. asiatica) and the species of Aremonia agrimonioides, belonging to the subtribe Agrimoniiae (Rosaceae) in Iran. Firstly, plant specimens were collected and then identified on the basis of relevant references. For anatomical analysis, the cross sections of basal leaves of each taxon were prepared, studied by light microscopy and then photographed by means of a digital camera. For morphological analysis, the flower, achene and seed characters were carefully examined using digital microscopy. To determine the relationships among the taxa, 57 characters were included in the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results supported the classification proposed by Flora Iranica and showed the importance of leaf anatomical, flower, achene and seed morphological characters in separating inter-generic, intraspecific and interspecific relationships among the representatives of subtribe Agrimoniinea in Iran.

This study aimed to characterize the stem, peduncle, and leaf anatomy of 22 species of Sedum senso lato distributed in Iran. The results showed that the presence of tanniniferous storage cells in stems and leaves, distinct xylem vessels in stems, and the shape of peduncle cross sections, were taxonomically informative evidence, and isolated Phedimus from the other studied taxa of Sedum s.l. , whereas hairy leaves and peduncles containing starch storage cells were identified as Prometheum and Hylotelephium respectively. In addition, the current anatomical evidence confirmed the alliance of 2 sections of Sedum and Epeteium within Sedum sensu stricto. The result of numerical analysis including 31 qualitative and quantitative anatomical characters supported complete separation of the fourallied genera and revealed significant influence of anatomical traitsin taxonomy of Sedum s.l.

Potentilla alborzensis Faghir & Attar, sp. nov. (Rosaceae) is collected from steppe Mountains of Tang-e Washi, in the middle of Alborz Mountains for the first time. The new species is related to section Aureae (Rydb.) Juz. for its palmate radical leaves, having straight hairs and glandular trichomes; corymbiform inflorescence; hairy and glandular sepals; clavate and papillose style, shorter than or as long as matured ovary. Detailed micro- and macromorphological descriptions of the newly collected species, as well as photographs and distribution map are provided. In addition, comparison of diagnostic traits with allied species especially P. crantzii (Crantz) Beck ex Fritsch, P. adenophylla Boiss. & Hohenack., P. gelida C. A. Mey., P. geranioides Willd. and identification key are presented.

Foliar micromorphological characters of 17 species of Hypericum L. belonging to five sections, Androsaemum (Duhamel) Godron, Hypericum, Hirtella Stef. (including 2 subsections: Platyadenum N. Robson et Stenadenum N. Robson), Taeniocarpum Jaub. et Spach. and Drosanthe (Spach) Endl. were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Based on the current result three types of epidermal cell shape (irregular polygonal, roughly regular rectangular and irregular elliptical); four types of papilla (triangular, with striate wall, finger and star shapes); two main types and three subtypes of epicuticular wax; seven type classes of outer stomatal and peristomatal rims/stomata ledge aperture; three types of wax distribution on the stomata rims/pore/epidermal cell and three types of inner stomatal rims variations (smooth, sinuolate and sinuolate-erose) were identified. Floral morphology of 24 species of the genus Alchemilla in Iran was studied by means of light and digital mi-croscopes. Flower samples were collected from different species and their morphological traits, including hypanthium, calyx, epicalyx, pedicels, ovaries and stamens, were measured. The most useful features for the separation of species were turned out to be the calyx shape and length, trichomes position on calyx and pedicle. Principal Component Anal-ysis (PCA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) were used to determine the potential contribution of floral morphological char-acters in the expression of species relationships. A total of 17 qualitative and quantitative characters were utilized in both analyses. The results of UPGMA and PCA methods were found to be consistent and in agreement with current classifications.

Drymocallis damghanensis Naderi & Faghir (Rosaceae) is described as a new species. The specimens were collected during a floristic study of an unexplored area on the rocky slopes of the Eastern Alborz Mountains (Damghan, Iran). Drymocallis damghanensis can be distinguished by its hairy carpels and rounded-obtuse teeth in leaflets. Here it is compared with the morphologically most closest taxa D. poteriifolia and D. schiraziana.

This paper reports the morphological characters of 18 Iranian species of the genus Alchemilla using light and scanning electron microscopy. The pollen grains are monad, radially symmetrical, isopolar, or subisopolar; small to medium in size; tri- and tetracolporate; rectangular to cylindrical (from equatorial view) and triangular to circular (from polar view) in outline; and prolate-spheroidal to subprolate and prolate in shape. The exine ornamentation is psilate and microechinate. Based on the exine sculpturing and microechinate distribution pattern, three main types, four subtypes, and two categories of pollen grains were recognized. We used cluster analysis and principal component analysis to determine the potential contribution of pollen morphological characters to the species relationships. Our findings revealed the significance of palynological evidence in explaining the species relationship. The results of two multivariate analyses showed a close affinity among the seven studied species (A.amardica, A. sericata, A. fluminea, A. kurdica, A. hyrcana, A. sedelmeyeriana, and A. pesudocartalinica).

The present survey reports maximum parsimony (MP) and Bayesian phylogenetic analyses of the genus Potentilla L. in Iran using the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) of nuclear ribosomal DNA and the trnL-F intergenic region of chloroplast DNA. A total of 25 taxa from 9 sections, 2 intersectional hybrids, and 4 related genera of Iranian taxa plus 40 previously sequenced data were analyzed for both trnL-F and nrDNA ITS regions. Individual and combined analysis of ITS and trnL/F data revealed monophyly of the genus Potentilla. The Potentilla core group was composed of monophyletic subclades of the sections Persicae (Th.Wolf) Juz., Potentilla, Micranthae Sojak., and Speciosae (Th.Wolf) Juz.; unresolved branches of the sections Rivales Poeverl., Aureae (Rydb.) Juz., Terminales, (Doll) Gren. & Godr., and Pensylvanicae Poeverl.; and the American genera Ivesia and Horkelia. The evolutionary trends of some diagnostic morphological traits were evaluated. Anther structure, and style shape and position evolved independently while multiple gains and parallel evolutions were inferred for leaf division.

Potentilla sangedehensis and Potentilla diversidentata are two new species collected from high montane areas of Sangedeh, Central Hyrcanian region, North of Iran. The former is related to the representatives of the section Curvisetae especially P. collettiana, P . curviseta and P. pteropoda and the later can be classified in the section Persicae , the most species–rich section in Iran. Detailed morphological descriptions of the new species, their photographs, and comparison of diagnostic traits with allied species are provided.

The pollen morphology of 28 species of the genus Potentilla (Rosaceae) and four related genera from Iran was examined using light (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pollen grains are radially symmetrical, isopolar to subisopolar, trizonocolpate and colporate. The shape of pollen grains in all the studied taxa varies from prolate-spheroidal to subprolate and prolate. The outline of the pollen grains is elliptical in equatorial view and triangular-circular in polar view. The size of the pollen grains is small to medium. Our results showed two main types of exine sculpturing. Among the studied pollen grain characters, shape and size are helpful evidences for separating different sections, while the exine sculpturing type provides limited taxonomic value.
