Listening to music has powerful effects on boost emotional and cognitive processes. It is still an open question whether cognitive improvements might depend on specific musical piece features (Mozart effect) or on the pleasure that we feel while listening. The general aim was to evaluate the attentional blink effect in music experts and non-experts (Musicians and Non-Musicians). The Mozart Sonata K448 was compared to highly pleasant musical pieces, self-selected by the participants. While listening to music, a rapid serial visual presentation task (RSVP) was used to tap into temporal attentional mechanisms. The results showed (at lag 240ms) a better performance during both the Sonata K448 and the self-selected pieces. Furthermore, the effect of pleasure varied with musical expertise. The higher the perceived pleasantness was for Musicians the higher the performance was accurate. These findings highlight the role of musical pleasure on cognitive processing. Our results emphasize the pleasure feelings evoked by music, even in experts, in affecting attention by boosting positive emotions and reward.

Liquid condensates from flash pyrolysis of biomass are not easy to use even in simple combustion applications due to its disadvantageous properties like high water content, low heating value, high viscosity and espe­cially high content of carboxylic acids. Furthermore, the condensates from straw pyrolysis disintegrate into a two­phase liquid, which is even less applicable. To convert these liquids in a form applicable for standard equipment, the properties must be changed. A potential treatment is the esterification with an alcohol not miscible with water. The reaction masks the carboxylic acids and water can be removed from the product. The resulting mixture shows much better quality for the application in standard equipment. The total acid number could be reduced by one order of magnitude and the water content could be reduced from 26 to below 2 % in the best case. The reaction of pyrolysis liquid with an alcohol is extremely promising especially for straw as feedstock, because it converts a nasty, two-phase sludge into a mildly viscous, single-phase liquid with acceptable higher heating value (30.2 MJ/kg)., Proceedings of the 23rd European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 1-4 June 2015, Vienna, Austria, pp. 1223-1228

Die Zusammensetzung von Verbrennungsrückständen hängt stets vom eingesetzten Material ab. Während das Eluatverhalten von Rostaschen aus MVA schon gut untersucht wurde, ist über die Auslaugung von Aschen aus EBS-Kraftwerken nur wenig bekannt. Eine aktuelle Untersuchung erlaubt nun Vergleiche und Schlussfolgerungen.

Vor allem in Ersatzbrennstoffen (EBS) enthaltenes Chlor kann zu Korrosionsschäden bei der thermischen Verwertung führen. Da EBS in der Regel sehr heterogen zusammen gesetzt sind, ist eine häufige und schnelle Analyse von Vorteil. Aktuelle Forschungen arbeiten an einer praxistauglichen Lösung.

Die Entsorgung von biogenen Abfällen, darunter Speiseabfälle, Klärschlamm, Altholz und Bioabfälle aus Haushalten, erfährt gegenwärtig einen grundlegenden Wandel. Früher wurden diese wertvollen Abfälle, die sich zu mehr als 70% aus Wasser zusammensetzen, einfach in der Kehrichtsverbrennungsanlage KVA verbrannt. Eine Verbrennung ist aber nicht sinnvoll, da mit geeigneten Methoden (Vergärung) die Abfälle in Biogas (ca. 60% Methan, je nach Abfallsubstrat) und Frischkompost umgewandelt werden können. Der Stoffkreislauf wird geschlossen, indem der Frischkompost an private Haushaltungen für die Gärten oder an die Landwirtschaft abgegeben werden kann, anstatt in der KVA als CO2 in die Luft zu entzweichen. Eine optimale Energieausnutzung kann erreicht werden, wenn das Biogas als Treibstoff verwendet respektive ins Erdgasnetz eingespeist wird. Dadurch lässt sich das Gas ganzjährig verwerten - und nicht nur als Wärme während der Heizsaison. Mit der Gewinnung von Biogas wird auch ein substanzieller Beitrag zur Minderung der CO2-Emissionen gemäss den Zielen des Kyoto-Protokolls geleistet. Allerdings nur, wenn das Gas ins Netz oder als Treibstoff eingesetzt wird. Hierbei gilt es u. a. auch Wege zur Weiterentwicklung und Optimierung der vorhandenen Anlagentechnik und Infastruktur zu beschreiben. Um seinen Lesern einen Einblick in die Komplexität dieses Themas zu verschaffen, hat sich gwa mit Herrn Dr. Thomas Marzi, Leiter Geschäftsfeld "Energieanlagentechnik" des Fraunhofer-Instituts UMSICHT, Oberhausen/D, über die Einspeisung von Biogas ins Erdgasnetz unterhalten.

Waterlogged wooden artefacts coming from foundations are a very peculiar category in the huge world of cultural heritage. The present paper reports on the results obtained from a diagnostic survey on wooden samples from loggings made on the wooden foundations of two ancient belfries. The importance of a multidisciplinary approach is well known in the world of conservators, but in cases like these it is crucial to bring together different experts and skills of several fields, including for example architecture technology, wood technology, chemistry, restoration and dendrochronology, in order to take advantage of their experience in making a correct diagnosis of structures that very often are still working. Authors want therefore to stress on the basic problem of the conservation of buildings with waterlogged foundations, through the promotion of an International comparison of experiences on the same research topic.

In der Verbrennungstechnik gewinnt die energetische Nutzung von nachwachsenden Rohstoffen und Ersatzbrennstoffen eine immer größer werdende Bedeutung. Es bestehen große Unsicherheiten bei der Einschätzung des Abbrandverhaltens von Ersatzbrennstoffen. Die Entwicklung einer Methode zur Charakterisierung und Beurteilung unterschiedlicher Brennstoffe wird vorgestellt. Die Ergebnisse können als Grundlage zur Optimierung des Anlagenbaus und Anlagenbetriebs sowie zur Auswahl und Herstellung geeigneter Brennstoffe herangezogen werden. (EN)

Im Auftrag des Landesumweltamtes wurde von Fraunhofer UMSICHT ein Daten- bestand zu Brand-und Zersetzungsprodukten erarbeitet, der sowohl fuer Fachleute detaillierte Informationen zum Brandverhalten einzelner Stoffe und Produkte bietet, als auch vereinfachte, uebersichtliche Angaben fuer den Vor-Ort-Einsatz enthaelt. Zur Erarbeitung von standardisierten Daten zu Brand- und Zersetzungsprodukten wurde ein "Expertensystem" auf der Basis der Datenbank-Software Access der Firma Microsoft entwickelt, mit dem halbautomatisch Kurzinformationen zur stoffspezifischen Zuordnung von Brandprodukten erstellt werden koennen. Hierbei wird auf chemische Zusammen- haenge und allgemeine Regeln zur Brandproduktbildung zurueckgegriffen. Insgesamt wurden bisher fuer ueber 2 500 Stoffe Kurzinformationen zu Brandprodukten und deren toxikologischer Relevanz erstellt. Es stellte sich heraus, dass der weitaus groesste Teil der Stoffe mit dem erstellten Programm zufriedenstellend bearbeitet werden kann. Die Daten fuer die bearbeiteten 2 500 Stoffe sind inzwischen in IGS-Fire uebernommen worden. Ziel ist es, mit Hilfe des entwickelten Zuordnungsprogramms fuer nahezu alle in IGS enthaltenen Stoffe (ca. 16 000) eine Kurzinformation zu Brandprodukten zur Verfuegung zu stellen.

Square spiral staircases appear in Sicily during the 16th century in different contexts and for different purposes. This contribution focuses on two case studies at the “opposite poles” of a casuistry that shares the common characteristics of suspended ramps revolving within a square masonry box around a central void. By analysing these cases we find a probable link with models from Spain. At the same time, they demonstrate a common descent from a constructive culture rooted in the Spanish and Mediterranean stereotomic experience of the early modern age.

In time processing, the role of different cortical areas is still under investigation. Event-related potentials (ERPs) represent valuable indices of neural timing mechanisms in the millisecond-to-second domain. We used an interference approach by repetitive TMS (rTMS) on ERPs and behavioral performance to investigate the role of different cortical areas in processing basic temporal information. Ten healthy volunteers were requested to decide whether time intervals between two tones (S1-S2, probe interval) were shorter (800 ms), equal to, or longer (1200 ms) than a previously listened 1000-ms interval (target interval) and press different buttons accordingly. This task was performed at the baseline and immediately after a 15-min-long train of 1-Hz rTMS delivered over the supplementary motor area, right posterior parietal cortex, right superior temporal gyrus, or an occipital control area. Task accuracy, reaction time, and ERPs during (contingent negative variation, CNV) and after the presentation of probe intervals were analyzed. At the baseline, CNV amplitude was modulated by the duration of the probe interval. RTMS had no significant effect on behavioral or ERP measures. These preliminary data suggest that stimulated cortical areas are less crucially involved than other brain regions (e.g. subcortical structures) in the explicit discrimination of auditory time intervals in the range of hundreds of milliseconds.
