The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) is a genetic region in jawed vertebrates that contains key genes involved in the immune response. Associations between the MHC and avian malaria infections in wild birds have been observed and mainly explored in the Northern Hemisphere, while a general lack of information remains in the Southern Hemisphere. Here, we investigated the associations between the MHC genes and infections with Plasmodium and Haemoproteus blood parasites along a latitudinal gradient in South America. We sampled 93 rufous-collared sparrows (Zonotrichia capensis) individuals from four countries, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Chile, and estimated MHC-I and MHC-II allele diversity. We detected between 1-4 (MHC-I) and 1-6 (MHC-II) amino acidic alleles per individual, with signs of positive selection. We obtained generalized additive mixed models to explore the associations between MHC-I and MHC-II diversity and latitude. We also explored the relationship between infection status and latitude/biome. We found a non-linear association between the MHC-II amino acidic allele diversity and latitude. Individuals from north Chile presented a lower MHC genetic diversity than those from other locations. We also found an association between deserts and xeric shrublands and a lower prevalence of Haemoproteus parasites. Our results support a lower MHC genetic in arid or semi-arid habitats in the region with the lower prevalence of Haemoproteus parasites.

Abstract In citrus, the synthetic auxin 3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyloxyacetic acid (3,5,6-TPA), applied as a foliar spray at a concentration of 15 mg l− 1 during physiological fruitlet abscission, caused additional fruitlet drop and reduced the number of fruits reaching maturity. The effect was much more pronounced at full physiological abscission than after. In this study, this thinning effect was successfully exploited for the first time in sour orange trees grown in an urban environment, reducing harvesting costs by up to almost 40%. This effect is mediated by the leaves, which alter their photosynthetic activity. Our results show a reduction of carbon fixation and sucrose synthesis in the leaf, by 3,5,6-TPA repression of the RbcS, SUS1 and SUSA genes, its transport to the fruit, as shown by the reduced expression of the sucrose transporter genes SUT3 and SUT4, and its hydrolysis in the fruit, mainly by repression of the SUS1 gene expression. Genes involved in auxin homeostasis in the fruit, TRN2 and PIN1, were also repressed. The coordinated repression of all these genes is consistent with the decrease in the fruit cell division rate, as shown by the repression of CYCA1-1 gene, leading to the production of ethylene, which ultimately induces fruitlet abscission.

A la crònica del segon semestre de 2023 assenyalem el desmantellament de la política lingüística que, en els últims anys, havia impulsat la normalització del valencià. Tot i que se celebren els 40 anys de la Llei d’ús i ensenyament del valencià, la feblesa d’aquest text, les dilacions i titubejos a l’hora d’implementar-la, així com tot un seguici d’anul·lacions judicials de les polítiques del Botànic dibuixen un escenari desolador per al valencià com a llengua pròpia. La suspensió de l’ensenyament en valencià als territoris de parla castellana, la supressió de diverses institucions i la pressió sobre les competències estatutàries de l’Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua són una bona mostra d’aquest escenari, que només millora amb la modificació del Reglament del Congrés dels Diputats que hi permet l’ús del valencià com a llengua cooficial. També fem esment de l’acció de foment i de l’onomàstica.

Resumen Estudio de análisis de la propuesta de integración curricular de la realidad aumentada como elemento primordial en el desarrollo de las competencias digitales, basado en los principios de la Visual Literacy y como factor de calidad en Educación Superior, para lo que se presenta como diseño instruccional en la formación biosanitaria. La hipótesis se fundamenta en la evolución conceptual y aplicativa de las competencias digitales en Educación por parte de los agentes sociales y sus políticas, como modo de fomentar la Agenda Digital y enfrentar los desafíos del conocimiento en la Web (Inteligencia Artificial, Big Data), para plantear como objetivos la selección de medios que incorporen eficazmente estas competencias y la identificación de los fundamentos exitosos en la aplicación de la realidad aumentada, que sirve de arquitectura a la propuesta. El método es deductivo, desde la fundamentación conceptual, el análisis de campo de buenas prácticas y exposición del modelo de integración curricular.

Abstract Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cell therapy for solid tumors faces significant hurdles, including T-cell inhibition mediated by the PD-1/PD-L1 axis. The effects of disrupting this pathway on T-cells are being actively explored and controversial outcomes have been reported. Here, we hypothesize that CAR-antigen affinity may be a key factor modulating T-cell susceptibility towards the PD-1/PD-L1 axis. We systematically interrogate CAR-T cells targeting HER2 with either low (LA) or high affinity (HA) in various preclinical models. Our results reveal an increased sensitivity of LA CAR-T cells to PD-L1-mediated inhibition when compared to their HA counterparts by using in vitro models of tumor cell lines and supported lipid bilayers modified to display varying PD-L1 densities. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knockout (KO) of PD-1 enhances LA CAR-T cell cytokine secretion and polyfunctionality in vitro and antitumor effect in vivo and results in the downregulation of gene signatures related to T-cell exhaustion. By contrast, HA CAR-T cell features remain unaffected following PD-1 KO. This behavior holds true for CD28 and ICOS but not 4-1BB co-stimulated CAR-T cells, which are less sensitive to PD-L1 inhibition albeit targeting the antigen with LA. Our findings may inform CAR-T therapies involving disruption of PD-1/PD-L1 pathway tailored in particular for effective treatment of solid tumors.

The Wildlife Malaria Network (WIMANET) is a groundbreaking multinational collaboration focused on studying vector-borne haemosporidian parasites in wildlife. Unlike human malaria, wildlife malaria is found on all continents except Antarctica, with parasites being transmitted by a range of vectors. The complexity and diversity of these parasites makes it necessary to have an interdisciplinary approach to understand and mitigate their impacts. Established in 2023 within the framework of COST-Action (European Cooperation in Science and Technology), WIMANET unites researchers from diverse scientific backgrounds to tackle critical questions about wildlife malaria on a global scale. This meeting report summarises the activities and plans resulting from the 1st meeting of WIMANET's six working groups, spanning the genetic and morphological identification of parasites to understanding the drivers of host-parasite-vector associations from individual to community levels. WIMANET's collaborative efforts aim to fill the knowledge gaps and foster large-scale research initiatives transcending local and regional boundaries.

Malaria remains one of the most important infectious diseases globally due to its high incidence and mortality rates. The influx of infected cases from endemic to non-endemic malaria regions like Europe has resulted in a public health concern over sporadic local outbreaks. This is facilitated by the continued presence of competent Anopheles vectors in non-endemic countries.We modelled the potential distribution of the main malaria vector across Spain using the ensemble of eight modelling techniques based on environmental parameters and the Anopheles maculipennis s.l. presence/absence data collected from 2000 to 2020. We then combined this map with the number of imported malaria cases in each municipality to detect the geographic hot spots with a higher risk of local malaria transmission.The malaria vector occurred preferentially in irrigated lands characterized by warm climate conditions and moderate annual precipitation. Some areas surrounding irrigated lands in northern Spain (e.g. Zaragoza, Logroño), mainland areas (e.g. Madrid, Toledo) and in the South (e.g. Huelva), presented a significant likelihood of A. maculipennis s.l. occurrence, with a large overlap with the presence of imported cases of malaria.While the risk of malaria re-emergence in Spain is low, it is not evenly distributed throughout the country. The four recorded local cases of mosquito-borne transmission occurred in areas with a high overlap of imported cases and mosquito presence. Integrating mosquito distribution with human incidence cases provides an effective tool for the quantification of large-scale geographic variation in transmission risk and pinpointing priority areas for targeted surveillance and prevention.

One of the challenges in implementing e-learning in tertiary institutions is the large number of lecturers who are categorized as digital immigrants. This group has the tendency of having difficulties with Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and showing some resistance to ICT. This study aims to determine the factors that influence digital immigrants in accepting e-learning at the University of Jambi using the Unified Theory Acceptance of User Technology (UTAUT) model. Factors to be tested include innovation, perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitudes towards e-learning, risk perception, and acceptance of digital immigrant lecturers. The sample in this study was 55 digital immigrant lecturers. The results of this study indicate that there are as many as 6 out of 9 hypotheses accepted significantly. The finding reveals that the acceptance of e-learning is only influenced by the perceived usefulness.

Abstract Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a highly complex neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in sociability and repetitive behaviour, however there is a great heterogeneity within other comorbidities that accompany ASD. Recently, gut microbiome has been pointed out as a plausible contributing factor for ASD development as individuals diagnosed with ASD often suffer from intestinal problems and show a differentiated intestinal microbial composition. Nevertheless, gut microbiome studies in ASD rarely agree on the specific bacterial taxa involved in this disorder. Regarding the potential role of gut microbiome in ASD pathophysiology, our aim is to investigate whether there is a set of bacterial taxa relevant for ASD classification by using a sibling-controlled dataset. Additionally, we aim to validate these results across two independent cohorts as several confounding factors, such as lifestyle, influence both ASD and gut microbiome studies. A machine learning approach, recursive ensemble feature selection (REFS), was applied to 16S rRNA gene sequencing data from 117 subjects (60 ASD cases and 57 siblings) identifying 26 bacterial taxa that discriminate ASD cases from controls. The average area under the curve (AUC) of this specific set of bacteria in the sibling-controlled dataset was 81.6%. Moreover, we applied the selected bacterial taxa in a tenfold cross-validation scheme using two independent cohorts (a total of 223 samples—125 ASD cases and 98 controls). We obtained average AUCs of 74.8% and 74%, respectively. Analysis of the gut microbiome using REFS identified a set of bacterial taxa that can be used to predict the ASD status of children in three distinct cohorts with AUC over 80% for the best-performing classifiers. Our results indicate that the gut microbiome has a strong association with ASD and should not be disregarded as a potential target for therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, our work can contribute to use the proposed approach for identifying microbiome signatures across other 16S rRNA gene sequencing datasets.

A les acaballes de la legislatura del govern del Botànic II, la política lingüística del Consell empentava cap al desenvolupament de l’exigència del coneixement del valencià com a requisit d’accés a l’Administració pública valenciana, i paral·lelament es proposava el reconeixement de la competència lingüística de valencià per a l’homologació dels estudis en el sistema educatiu valencià. Cap d’aquestes propostes ha estat aprovada, tot i haver-se tramitat el procediment normatiu corresponent. Per contra, el sistema universitari ha reforçat la política lingüística amb l’aprovació de la Carta universitària de la llengua, en el marc de la Xarxa Vives d’Universitats. En aquest semestre també hi ha canvis de denominació toponímica per la forma exclusiva en valencià.

The college years represent a crucial developmental period in which unhealthy behaviors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, inadequate physical activity (PA), poor sleep quality, and unhealthy nutrition habits are often acquired, influencing the onset or exacerbation of pre-existing mental disturbances such as anxiety, depression, or difficulties in emotion regulation. Our aim was to analyze the effect of the intensity of physical activity (PA) on the emotional, behavioral, and cognitive variables in a sample of young people. We recruited 103 participants (19.85 ± 0.25) who completed several online questionnaires (IPAQ-SF, STAI-t, DERS, UPPS-P, ISP-20, and Mini-IPIP). Subsequently, face-to-face sessions were conducted to assess the cognitive variables and to collect more details about their lifestyle habits, including drug use, sleep quality, and leisure activities. Based on the IPAQ-SF results, we categorized the sample into three groups: light PA (n = 47), moderate PA (n = 29), and vigorous PA (n = 27). Vigorous PA group showed better emotional regulation, lower impulsivity, fewer prefrontal symptoms and unhealthy behaviors, better sleep quality, and more leisure activities. No significant cognitive differences were found. It seems that young people are a vulnerable group with emotional and impulsivity traits and engaging in intense PA appears to be a promising avenue for managing these symptoms. In conclusion, our study suggests that young people are a vulnerable group with emotional and impulsivity traits that may precipitate in future mental disorders. Nevertheless, engaging in PA, particularly at high intensity, appears to be a promising avenue for reducing and managing these symptoms during this critical period of life.

Can there be a cultural study of EU law? The notion of legal culture is notoriously tricky. It is both omnipresent and yet seemingly ungraspable. Can we nevertheless hope to dispel the mystery of legal culture, and seize this notion as an object of study? And can it provide a method to improve our understanding of EU law?

Abstract Bakground Vector-borne diseases affecting humans, wildlife and livestock have significantly increased their incidence and distribution in the last decades. Because the interaction among vectors-parasite-vertebrate hosts plays a key role driving vector-borne disease transmission, the analyses of the diversity and structure of vector-parasite networks and host-feeding preference may help to assess disease risk. Also, the study of seasonal variations in the structure and composition of vector and parasite communities may elucidate the current patterns of parasite persistence and spread as well as facilitate prediction of how climate variations may impact vector-borne disease transmission. Avian malaria and related haemosporidian parasites constitute an exceptional model to understand the ecology and evolution of vector-borne diseases. However, the characterization of vector-haemosporidian parasite-bird host assemblages is largely unknown in many regions. Methods Here, we analyzed 5859 female mosquitoes captured from May to November in five localities from southwestern Spain to explore the composition and seasonal variation of the vector-parasite-vertebrate host network. Results We showed a gradual increase in mosquito abundance, peaking in July. A total of 16 different haemosporidian lineages were found infecting 13 mosquito species. Of these assemblages, more than 70% of these vector-parasite associations have not been described in previous studies. Moreover, three Haemoproteus lineages were reported for the first time in this study. The prevalence of avian malaria infections in mosquitoes varied significantly across the months, reaching a maximum in November. Mosquito blood-feeding preference was higher for mammals (62.5%), whereas 37.5% of vectors fed on birds, suggesting opportunistic feeding behavior. Conclusion These outcomes improve our understanding of disease transmission risk and help tovector control strategies. Graphical abstract

Abstract Dynamically controlling friction in micro- and nanoscale devices is possible using applied electrical bias between contacting surfaces, but this can also induce unwanted reactions which can affect device performance. External electric fields provide a way around this limitation by removing the need to apply bias directly between the contacting surfaces. 2D materials are promising candidates for this approach as their properties can be easily tuned by electric fields and they can be straightforwardly used as surface coatings. This work investigates the friction between single layer graphene and an atomic force microscope tip under the influence of external electric fields. While the primary effect in most systems is electrostatically controllable adhesion, graphene in contact with semiconducting tips exhibits a regime of unexpectedly enhanced and highly tunable friction. The origins of this phenomenon are discussed in the context of fundamental frictional dissipation mechanisms considering stick slip behavior, electron-phonon coupling and viscous electronic flow.

Zinc (Zn) deficiency represents a significant global concern, affecting both plant and human health, particularly in regions with Zn-depleted soils. Agronomic biofortification strategies, such as the application of Zn fertilizers, offer a cost-effective approach to increase Zn levels in crops. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of soil and foliar Zn biofortification, applied as an aqueous solution of 0.5% zinc sulphate (ZnSO4·7H2O), on triticale (x Triticosecale) grown under Mediterranean conditions. The study was conducted over two growing seasons (2017/18 and 2018/19) in southern Spain, evaluating the effects on biomass yield; forage quality, including crude protein, Van Soest detergent fiber, organic matter digestibility, and relative forage value; and nutrient accumulation. Soil treatment consisted in the application of 50 kg of ZnSO4·7H2O ha−1 solely at the beginning of the first campaign to assess the residual effect on the second year. In contrast, the foliar treatment consisted of two applications of 4 kg of ZnSO4·7H2O ha−1 per campaign, one at the beginning of tillering and the other at the appearance of the first node. The foliar application increased the Zn content of the forage to adequate levels, while the soil application resulted in a 33% increase in biomass production, which is particularly beneficial for farmers. Overall quality was favored by the combined soil + foliar application, and no adverse antagonistic effects on other nutrients were detected. Instead, a synergistic interaction between Se and Zn was observed, which improved the efficacy of this important micronutrient for livestock and human wellbeing.

Bird feathers have several functions, including flight, insulation, communication, and camouflage. Since feathers degrade over time, birds need to moult regularly to maintain these functions. However, environmental factors like food scarcity, stress, and parasite infections can affect feather quality and moult speed. This study examined the impact of avian haemosporidian infection and uropygial gland volume, as well as feather quality and feather growth rate in two migratory hirundine species captured in southwestern Spain—the house martin (Delichon urbicum) and sand martin (Riparia riparia). Our findings showed that the prevalence of infection varied among species, with house martins having the highest rates, possibly due to their larger colony size. Moreover, haemosporidian infection had a different impact on each species; infected house martins exhibited lower feather quality than healthy individuals, although this outcome was not observed in sand martins. Furthermore, no effect of infection on feather growth rate was observed in both hirundinids. Additionally, feather growth rate only correlated positively with feather quality in house martins. Finally, no link was observed between uropygial gland volume and feather quality or feather growth rate in any of the species in this study. These findings highlight the effect of haemosporidian infections on the plumage of migratory birds, marking, for the first time, how avian haemosporidian infection is shown to adversely impact feather quality. Even so, further research is needed to explore these relationships more deeply.
