Determine if providing basic contraceptive counseling during prenatal visits increases pregnant Hispanic women's acceptance of immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraception (LARC).Respondents completed a short survey consisting of demographic information, an acculturation scale, and perceptions of immediate postpartum LARC use. After reading a brief educational excerpt on intrauterine devices (IUDs) and the subdermal contraceptive implant, LARC acceptability was reassessed. The study included 198 Hispanic women, ages 14 and older, in the 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy receiving care at an academic practice along the United States-Mexico border in West Texas. Analysis was performed using a McNemar test, univariate and multivariable relative risk (RR) regression.Prior to an educational intervention, 34.5% of respondents indicated that they were planning to use immediate postpartum LARC. Following the educational intervention, 74.5% of respondents indicated they would consider a postpartum LARC. The pre/post comparison on the intent to use postpartum LARC showed that a significant number of respondents changed their intention to use LARC after reading the educational intervention (RR= 2.54, p0.0001). LARC acceptability was high among single women, those less than 25-years-old, women with current unintended pregnancies, and women using a contraceptive method that failed when they became pregnant.In communities with a high proportion of Hispanic women, postpartum contraceptive counseling is crucial for patient education and family planning. When women are provided with brief, structured contraceptive counseling during prenatal visits, they are more willing to consider use of an immediate postpartum LARC for their future family planning.

This paper reports on one phase of a larger telecommunications consumer rights and access-to-justice project framed by Canada's Wireless Code of Conduct (2014). Two pilot studies involving 12 mystery shopper interactions, and 16 qualitative interviews of wireless consumers are reported. Preliminary findings suggest ways the consumer’s perspective in Canada’s wireless services, legal and informational, ecology could be strengthened.

PurposeUsing Weick's sensemaking theory within a KM framework, and storytelling methodology, this study aims to deconstruct a recent public internet access policy crisis at the newly amalgamated Ottawa Public Library (Canada). As the library's former Manager of Virtual Library Services, the author retrospectively enacts the story of how the library board and management resolved a public controversy led by the staff and the community newspaper. At issue were the library staff's right to be protected from viewing internet pornography, the community's reaction to the issue of protecting children's internet access, and the library's commitment to intellectual freedom online.Design/methodology/approachPlausible meanings are presented, the public library's identity and beliefs are reinterpreted, organizational vocabularies are challenged and tacit and cultural knowledge is created and shared.FindingsIn keeping with a commitment to knowledge creation and use, the library should be actively engaged in multiple tellings of this organizational story by both staff and management. Such tellings, while perhaps not building any new consensus, would contribute to future sensemaking and could aid future strategic planning.Originality/valueApplies Weick's theory, developed in a larger KM framework, and using storytelling methodology, to deconstruct the experience of a recent organizational crisis involving public internet access in a Canadian public library.

While biofiltration and bioscrubbing have already established themselves as standard methods of volatile organic compound (VOC) and odor control, trickling bed biofilter applications are mainly confined to laboratory studies, with only a few installed systems reported in industrial operation. An example of successful industrial biotrickling filter application, controlling highly variable loads of water soluble VOCs at a flexographic printing facility, is presented. The biotrickling filter operates at 14 s contact time and removes on average 7 kg of mixed water-soluble solvents per hour (280 g per m 3 of carrier per hour). The plant is fully compliant with the EC Council Directive 1999/13/EC on the limitation of emissions of VOCs. The operating costs of a biotrickling filter are discussed.

Preliminary data from a larger ethnographic case study using observation and interviewing techniques in 2 reference desk ecologies in a Canadian urban public library are presented. Taking an actor-network approach, this study explores the social catalogue from the perspectives of the designer, library organization and users. Findings indicate that the library and their users have been enrolled into the vendor's blackbox of design structures and templates and that there has been limited use of social media functions.Au moyen de l’approche acteur–réseau, cette étude explore le catalogue social du point de vue du concepteur, de la bibliothèque et de l’usager. Les résultats montrent que la bibliothèque et ses usagers ont accepté les arguments des fournisseurs en matière de design et de gabarits, mais que l’utilisation des fonctions sociales demeure limitée.

The face to face interactions of reference librarians and reference assistants are studied from a theoretical practice perspective. Rather than reinforcing professional boundaries, the results of this analysis support reference practice in public libraries as a highly relational activity where reference “expertise” retains a significant subjectivist, relational dimension.Les interventions en personne des bibliothèques de référence et des adjoints à la référence sont étudiées du point de vue de la pratique théorique. Plutôt que de renforcer les frontières interprofessionnelles, les résultats de cette analyse appuient l'idée que les pratiques de référence en milieu public sont des activités hautement relationnelles où l'expertise de la référence conserve une dimension subjectiviste et relationnelle.

MicroRNAs (miRNA) have been identified as important regulators of effector CD8 T cell responses and memory differentiation. Here, we examined whether miRNA expression is altered in CD8 T cells of older individuals and whether functional consequences of miRNA expression account for defective CD8 T cell responses with age. We characterized the expression of 44 immune-related miRNAs in CD8 T cells subsets in young and elderly adults using microfluidic qPCR. 32 out of the 44 miRNA investigated were expressed in CD8 T cells. Out of those expressed, 16 miRNAs had significantly altered expression between young and elderly adult CD8 T cells, with 11 of these being altered in naive CD8 T cells. These 11 miRNAs were not directly related to miRNA profiles seen with TCR-activation or T cell differentiation in CD8 T cells. Integrated pathway analysis of these miRNAs using the DIANA MirPath software identified the TGF-β receptor signaling pathway as a highly enriched (p=1.70E-08) target of the decreased miRNAs. Decreased expression of these five miRNAs suggested increased TGF-β receptors and/or signaling in naïve CD8 T cells during aging. Consistently, expression of TGFBR3 and PU.1, a TGF-β-induced transcription factor, was up-regulated in elderly naïve CD8 T cells compared with young. Moreover, overexpression of these miRNAs in elderly naïve CD8 T cells decreased TGFBR3 expression, demonstrating a direct effect of miRNAs on the TGF-β pathway. Thus, using a systems approach to interrogate the role of miRNAs, we identified TGF-β receptor signaling as a potential mediator of altered CD8 T cell responses during aging. Further studies into CD8 T cells and TGF-β signaling in the context of vaccination and aging are currently underway.

The air is full of innocuous, but highly antigenic particles that are inhaled with every breath. In order to avoid the damage associated with an inflammatory response, lung-resident immune cells are kept under strict regulation and fail to respond to most inhaled antigens. Whilst the majority of cells in the airspaces are alveolar macrophages, many other cell types are present in the airspaces and interstitium. Interactions between lung-resident cells provide the basis for the suppression of immune responses; and the cytokines, chemokines and other factors that they secrete provide further levels of regulation. Using sphingosine-1-phosphate receptor agonists to block the entry of T cells into the lungs, we have been investigating the effects of T cell absence on lung immune homeostasis. FTY720 blocks lymphocyte egress from the thymus and lymph nodes by inducing internalisation of the S1P1 receptor which is required for exit into the blood and lymph. We find that exclusion of T cells from the lungs affects macrophage responses to TLR agonists, both in vitro and in vivo as a result of altered alveolar macrophage activation status. By dissecting the mechanisms involved in maintaining lung homeostasis and resolving inflammation, we hope to further our understanding of lung immunity both in terms of homeostatic disruption and immunopathology during or following infectious disease.
