Framing is regarded as the primary mechanism through which unions generate societal power. This article examines the relationship between societal power and framing in a significant case study- a nursing strike which successfully challenged austerity wages in Ireland. Through analysis of messages of support for the strike in newspapers and on Twitter, the sources of societal power in the conflict are identified. The findings indicate that the framing strategies unions adopt and public acceptance of these strategies depend on historical and sectoral factors. In the instant case, nurses benefitted from increased societal support for the broader labour movement and recent waves of protest. The purpose of our study was to compare the outcome of dorsally displaced distal radial fractures treated either by open reduction and internal fixation or with percutaneous k-wire stabilisation. Twenty two consecutive patients with a dorsally displaced distal radial fracture treated surgically were reviewed. A clinical and radiological evaluation was performed and each patient completed a patient-rated wrist evaluation form. The range of movement and strength of the wrist was determined by the occupational therapist. There was no significant difference between the groups for range of movement, grip strength or radiological findings. The k-wire group produced better results for pain, function and disability scores but, the difference was not significant. There were, however, more complications in the internal-fixation group. Percutaneous k-wire stabilisation, being a less invasive and shorter surgical procedure, is the preferred method of treatment for dorsally displaced distal radial fractures.

A representative sample of 420, 15- and 16-year old students, participated in a short educational programme about mental handicap; the main feature of which was a well-structured contact session with a group of mentally handicapped adults. This lasted 40 min and took place in the students' school. Various control procedures ascertained that the programme was effective at increasing their confidence in meeting mentally handicapped people and in their knowledge of the causes of mental handicap. Moreover the majority of students voluntarily visited a local mental handicap centre and a proportion maintained regular contact. These findings were replicated in a second study involving a further 368 students but this time the programme was presented by teachers and/or personnel from a local mental handicap service. The salient features of the contact sessions are discussed and directions for future research noted, particularly explicit guidance for adolescents on interacting with atypical peers.

Over 1300, 15 and 16-year-old students throughout Ireland, completed a range of questionnaires which covered their past contact with mentally handicapped adults, their perceptions of them, their views on integration within society and their knowledge about the causes of this disability. It was found that only one quarter of the students had ever interacted with a mentally handicapped adult and nearly half of them had never been in their company. There were marked differences between these subgroups in their perceptions of, and attitudes to, mentally handicapped people. Equally striking were the differences between male and female students, although the effects of social background, city versus country and socio-economic status, were less pronounced. The implications for school-based, educational programmes on disability are discussed and areas for further research are highlighted.

Before the current Ebola epidemic in West Africa, there were few documented cases of symptomatic Ebola patients traveling by commercial airline, and no evidence of transmission to passengers or crew members during airline travel. In July 2014 two persons with confirmed Ebola virus infection who were infected early in the Nigeria outbreak traveled by commercial airline while symptomatic, involving a total of four flights (two international flights and two Nigeria domestic flights). It is not clear what symptoms either of these two passengers experienced during flight; however, one collapsed in the airport shortly after landing, and the other was documented to have fever, vomiting, and diarrhea on the day the flight arrived. Neither infected passenger transmitted Ebola to other passengers or crew on these flights. In October 2014, another airline passenger, a U.S. health care worker who had traveled domestically on two commercial flights, was confirmed to have Ebola virus infection. Given that the time of onset of symptoms was uncertain, an Ebola airline contact investigation in the United States was conducted. In total, follow-up was conducted for 268 contacts in nine states, including all 247 passengers from both flights, 12 flight crew members, eight cleaning crew members, and one federal airport worker (81 of these contacts were documented in a report published previously). All contacts were accounted for by state and local jurisdictions and followed until completion of their 21-day incubation periods. No secondary cases of Ebola were identified in this investigation, confirming that transmission of Ebola during commercial air travel did not occur.

Over 160 adults attending day workshops for people with mental handicap were interviewed regarding the persons they had talked to in the community and who was usually with them on these occasions. The number of community contacts was heartening, with most occurring around the neighbourhood, fewer in the city, and least of all at home. However, there were only three groups of people with whom the majority of respondents had recent contact – local shopkeepers, bus conductors, and chemists. In general, community contacts were rarely in the company of friends – cinema-going was the only exception. Usually they were with their family, or alone. Results from surveys of this type can help to establish the effectiveness of our social education programmes, can challenge parental assumptions about their son or daughter's abilities, and can identify groups within the community who would best benefit from guidance on how to interact with a person who is mentally handicapped.

BackgroundThe Adolescent to Adult Personality Functioning Assessment (ADAPFA) a modification of the Adult Personality Functioning Assessment (APFA) is described. It may be used to assess specific and general social dysfunction in the transition from childhood to adult life.MethodTwo raters independently rated 38 audiotaped interviews to test the interrater reliability of the instrument. The relationship between dysfunction in specific domains and overall psychosocial dysfunction was examined.ResultsInterrater reliabilities for the total ADAPFA score and for the majority of the domains were high. Agreement on type of dysfunction and on categorical ratings indicating the presence of personality disorder were good.ConclusionThe ADAPFA is a useful measure of interpersonal and social role performance in the transition between adolescent and adult life.

The suicide rate for county Kerry in 1988 was determined by clinical means using postmortem records as a starting point. Sixteen deaths due to suicide were thus identified (eight males and eight females). The official figure for the year is 19 (13 males and six females). Four of the clinically determined suicides did not appear in the official figures. Combining information from both sources gives a figure of 23 suicide deaths, a rate of 18.58 per 100,000. The authors conclude that there are continuing deficiencies in suicide recording practices.
