With the change to one scientific name for pleomorphic fungi, generic names typified by sexual and asexual morphs have been evaluated to recommend which name to use when two names represent the same genus and thus compete for use. In this paper, generic names in Pucciniomycotinaand Ustilaginomycotinaare evaluated based on their type species to determine which names are synonyms. Twenty-one sets of sexually and asexually typified names in Pucciniomycotinaand eight sets in Ustilaginomycotinawere determined to be congeneric and compete for use. Recommendations are made as to which generic name to use. In most cases the principle of priority is followed. However, eight generic names in the Pucciniomycotina, and none in Ustilaginomycotina, are recommended for protection: Classiculaover Naiadella, Gymnosporangiumover Roestelia, Helicobasidiumover Thanatophytumand Tuberculina, Melampsorellaover Peridermium, Milesinaover Milesia, Phragmidiumover Aregma, Sporobolomycesover Blastodermaand Rhodomyces, and Uromycesover Uredo.In addition, eight new combinations are made: Blastospora juruensis, B. subneurophyla, Cronartium bethelii, C. kurilense, C. sahoanum, C. yamabense, Milesina polypodii, and Prospodium crusculumcombs. nov.

Following the change that eliminated dual naming of sexual and asexual morphs of fungi, generic names of Pezizomyceteshave been evaluated to determine which of the competing names should be recommended for use. Evaluation is based on congruence of type species to determine if the names are congeneric and which name is most commonly cited as well as priority. In the Pezizomycetessix pairs of generic names were determined to compete. In all cases the older name, representing the sexual morph, is recommended for use, specifically Caloscypharather than Geniculodendron, Desmazierellarather than Verticicladium, Miladinarather than Actinosporella, Morchellarather than Costantinella, Sarcoscypharather than Molliardiomyces, and Trichophaearather than Dichobotrys.

Two new species of aquatic hyphomycetes in the genus Tricladiumare described from streams in Alaska, USA. Both species were isolated from submerged decaying sedges. Tricladium kellerihas blackish colonies and typical tricladioid conidia formed on sympodial conidiogenous cells. Tricladium alaskensehas conidia with fine elements and 0–4 lateral branches; conidia are formed on sympodial conidiogenous cells. The two species are compared to other species in the genus and related genera using morphological characters and/or rDNA sequencing data (ITS and 28S). Molecular phylogenetic analysis placed both species in the Helotiales.

A new genus, Classicula, and a new species, Classicula fluitans, are described in the Urediniomycetes for the teleomorph of Naiadella fluitans. Classicula fluitansforms transversely septate basidia with subapically swollen sterigmata and long fusiform basidiospores. An integrated analysis of morphological, ultrastructural and molecular data indicates that Classicula fluitansis a member of the Urediniomycetes. Among the Urediniomycetes, Classicula fluitansshares the formation of simple septal pores associated with microbodies and tremelloid haustorial cells only with the hyphomycete Jaculispora submersa. In addition, in our molecular phylogenetic analyses with at least two representatives of all known urediniomycetous groups, Classicula fluitansappears together with Jaculispora submersain a statistically well-supported cluster. Accordingly, the family Classiculaceae and the order Classiculales are proposed to accommodate these fungi in the Urediniomycetes.

Filosporella pinguis sp. nov., Pachycladina parva sp. nov. and Pleuropedium macrum sp. nov. from stream foam collected in the catchment of the Miramichi River, New Brunswick, are described and illustrated. Filosporella pinguis has a microconidial state. Keys to species in the above genera are provided.

AbstractArcispora bisagittaria, an anamorph with basidiomycetous affiliation, is described. It was isolated from foam in a stream in the Miramichi Region, N. Brunswick. The fungus has conidia consisting of a nearly straight axis and two median lateral branches, which are parallel and perpendicular to the axis. The proximal branch grows from the loop of the clamp in the middle of the axis, the distal one directly from the axis. Each branch has a clamp on the outer side of its base. The conidial ends bear thin extensions. An unnamed athelioid teleomorph was obtained in one isolate.
