2. Search for Cosmic Strings in the GOODS Survey

Abstract

We search Hubble Space Telescope Treasury Program images collected as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey for pairs of galaxies consistent with the gravitational lensing signature of a cosmic string. Our technique includes estimates of the efficiency for finding the lensed galaxy pair. In the north (south) survey field we find no evidence out to a redshift of greater than 0.5 (0.3) for cosmic strings to a mass per unit length limit of $G\mu<3.0x10^{-7}$ at 95% confidence limits (C.L.). In the combined 314.9 arcmin$^2$ of the north and south survey fields this corresponds to a global limit on $\Omega_{strings}<0.02$. Our limit on $G\mu$ is more than an order of magnitude lower than searches for individual strings in cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. Our limit is higher than other CMB and gravitational wave searches, however, we note that it is less model dependent than these other searches., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures. However, once it becomes refractory disease to chemotherapy or relapses after high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) with autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), it is difficult to manage with conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy. The introduction of brentuximab vedotin (BV) has changed the treatment landscape of cHL in the past decade. Several studies demonstrated high efficacy of BV monotherapy in heavily treated patients with cHL relapsed or refractory after HDC/ASCT. Recent studies also reported high efficacy of concurrent or sequential combination of BV and chemotherapy in patients with transplant-eligible relapsed/refractory cHL at the second-line setting. In addition, a randomized phase III trial ECHELON-1 reported a positive result of BV in combination with AVD (doxorubicin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine) in patients with newly diagnosed advanced-stage cHL. 6. Effects of oral administration of timothy hay and psyllium on the growth performance and fecal microbiota of preweaning calves

Abstract

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of oral administration of fiber from the first week of life on the growth and hindgut environment of preweaning calves. Twenty newborn female Holstein calves were divided into 2 groups as control and treatment. Calves in both groups were reared under the same feeding program except for oral fiber administration. Timothy hay and psyllium were mixed at a 50-to-6 ratio as a treatment diet for oral fiber administration. Calves in the treatment group were orally administered 50 g of fiber daily from 3 to 7 d of age and 100 g of fiber from 8 d of age until weaning. Feed intake and occurrence of diarrhea were recorded daily, and body weight (BW) was recorded weekly for the individual calf. Fresh fe-ces were collected from calves at 7, 21, 35, 49, and 56 d of age to analyze fermentation parameters and microbiota to characterize the hindgut environment. Higher fiber intake in the treatment group due to oral administration of timothy and psyllium did not affect the starter intake and achieved higher BW at 21 d of age. The fecal pH, total volatile fatty acid, lactate, and ammonia nitrogen concentrations were not affected by oral fiber administration; meanwhile, the molar propor-tion of propionate was higher in the treatment group at 7 d of age. The difference in fecal microbiota in the calves subjected to the oral administration of fiber was observed within 21 d of life; Lactobacillus spp. and Prevotella spp. showed higher abundance, whereas that of Clostridium perfringens was decreased. These higher abundances of beneficial bacteria and lower abundance of pathogenic bacteria during early life may partly ex-plain the higher BW of calves in the treatment group at 21 d of age. Furthermore, no adverse effect was ob-served for the BW and health status in the treatment group throughout the preweaning period. Abstract

In supersonic flight, airfoils generate strong sonic boom and wave drag accompanied by shock waves and expansion waves. The Busemann biplane is representative of an airfoil that has the possibility of realizing low drag. With the aim of realizing a new concept of supersonic transport, aerodynamic design and analysis are discussed based on computational fluid dynamics. Traditional biplane airfoils were extended to three-dimensional wings with a design Mach number of 1.7. Euler simulations of three-dimensional biplane wings of several configurations were conducted. Because of the existence of wing tips, three-dimensional biplane wings do not perform as well as two-dimensional biplane airfoils. This is because the areas affected by Mach cones originated from the wing tips, which precludes the occurrence of an appropriate pressure wave interaction. Thus, the wing tip area has a large drag coefficient. To overcome these problems, a tapered wing is herein considered. After parametric studies, a wing planform was determined, the taper ratio and aspect ratio of which were 0.25 and 5.12, respectively. Aerodynamic design of wing section shapes of the three-dimensional tapered biplane wing was conducted using an inverse-problem method. The designed biplane wing shows a better lift-to-drag ratio performance than the two-dimensional flat-plate airfoil in the range where the lift coefficient is more than 0.17. Patients with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) generally have a poor prognosis when treated with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone (CHOP)/CHOP-like chemotherapy; once relapse occurs, it is mostly regarded as an incurable disease. To overcome the chemorefractoriness of PTCL, several novel agents have been developed. Since the first approval of pralatrexate, a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, for relapsed/refractory PTCL by the US Food and Drug Administration, several new agents, such as romidepsin (histone deacetylase inhibitor), brentuximab vedotin (antibody–drug conjugate targeting CD30), chidamide (histone deacetylase inhibitor), and mogamulizumab (anti-CC chemokine receptor 4 monoclonal antibody), have been approved as a therapeutic option for relapsed/refractory PTCL in several countries, including the US, Europe, China, and Japan. Forodesine is a novel, potent purine nucleoside phosphorylase inhibitor that is effective against T-cell malignancies. Although the clinical development of forodesine was discontinued in the US and Europe, a multicenter Phase I/II study of oral forodesine for relapsed PTCL was recently completed in Japan. The overall response rate was 24% (10 of 41 patients), which included four patients with complete response. In general, the toxicity of forodesine is manageable. As the study met the primary end point, forodesine was approved for the treatment of relapsed/refractory PTCL in Japan in March 2017, which was the first approval of forodesine in the world. As forodesine is an oral formulation, it is more convenient than other novel intravenous agents approved for PTCL. However, it is necessary to appropriately manage opportunistic infections and secondary lymphomas possibly associated with long-lasting lymphocytopenia caused by forodesine. In this manuscript, we have summarized the currently available evidence for forodesine and discussed the clinical implications for PTCL treatment. 39. Locally Non-centrosymmetric Superconductivity in Multilayer Systems

Abstract

Although multilayer systems possess global inversion symmetry some of the layers lack local inversion symmetry because no global inversion centers are present on such layers. Such locally non centrosymmetric systems exhibit spatially modulated Rashba spin orbit coupling. In this study the superconductivity in multilayer models exhibiting inhomogeneous Rashba spin orbit coupling is investigated. We study the electronic structure superconducting gap and spin susceptibility in the superconducting state with mixed parity order parameters. We show the enhancement of the spin susceptibility by Rashba spin orbit coupling and interpret it on the basis of the crossover from a centrosymmetric superconductor to a non centrosymmetric superconductor. It is also shown that the spin susceptibility is determined by the phase difference of the order parameter between layers and is nearly independent of the parity mixing of order parameters. An intuitive understanding is given on the basis of the analytic expression of superconducting order parameters in the band basis. The results indicate that not only a broken global inversion symmetry but also a broken local inversion symmetry leads to unique properties of superconductivity. We discuss the superconductivity in artificial superlattices involving CeCoIn5 and multilayer high T c cuprates.
