Abstract

Heat treatment is critically important to the performance of Nb3Sn superconducting strands. For very large Nb3Sn magnet coils, such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Central Solenoid (CS) coils, heat treatment carries risk of temperature and time excursion, which may result in performance degradation. Therefore, it is prudent to study the effect of possible excursion on Nb3Sn performance. In this study, Nb3Sn strands used for ITER CS coils are heat treated at different temperatures for different times. Their critical current, residual resistance ratio and hysteresis losses are measured. It is found that in the range we studied, critical current and hysteresis losses do not change significantly. Residual resistance ratio, however, decreases with increasing heat treatment temperature and time. This is attributed to the diffusion of metallic elements from the plated Cr layer to the copper stabilizer. Based on a model of metallic elements diffusion, a numerical code is developed to predict residual resistance ratio as a function of heat treatment temperature and time., Comment: 9 figures

Abstract

This paper describes critical assembly process qualifications, acceptance criteria, and worker training of ITER Central Solenoid Assembly. Coaxial joint assembly was qualified and trained to achieve resistance below 4.1 nOhm. The electrical insulation process was qualified to 30 kV and 15 kV under Paschen conditions. Shear pin drilling and installation within specified tolerance was achieved. Modules were lifted and positioned within 2 mm. The lessons learned, and subsequent work execution onsite within the IO facility assembly hall are also presented.

12. Coupling and Hysteresis Loss Measurements on the ITER CS Module #4

Abstract

The fourth CS Module (CSM#4) of the ITER Central Solenoid was tested in November/December 2022 at the premises of General Atomics, Poway, US. During the measurement campaign, the CSM#4 was submitted to dumps of the transport current from different initial values (from 0 to 40 kA) to 0 kA. The tests were performed both in virgin conditions and after 10 slow current cycles. This work analyses the experimental dumps of the CSM#4 to determine the losses in the CICC via the measurement of the energy deposited in the supercritical helium. The losses in the magnet are presented pointing out the impact of the slow current cycles. The latter also allow one measuring the hysteresis losses of the magnet. In the previous module tests, as well as in the tests of a single layer solenoid (referred to as CS Insert), it was very difficult to retrieve reliable values of the hysteresis losses in the CS conductor. However, the knowledge of hysteresis losses is crucial for a correct heat inventory of the magnet in operation. This study reports the results of their measurement, which represents a relevant added value of the CSM#4 tests. Finally, the experimental data are compared with the results of analytical models developed for the loss computation.

A heavy ion driver, needed for Heavy Ion Fusion (HIF) that would be accomplished by means of a practical inertial-confinement fusion reactor, will require many superconducting quadrupole magnets. A concept for a powerful, economical focusing magnet array for HIF has been developed in a collaborative effort between Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Lawrence Berkeley national Labortory (LBNL), and prototypes have been constructed to demonstrate its feasibility.

Abstract

The design and fabrication of a 180-kA superconducting cable for the GEM Detector Magnet experiment by the All-Russia Scientific Research Institute of Inorganic Materials is reported. The cable, which has a diameter of 20 mm. and a length of 1,400 m. consists of 450 multifilamentary NbTi strands with a diameter of 0.73 mm. to meet specifications for a critical current of more than 420 A in a magnetic field of two tesla.

Abstract

The superconducting solenoid magnet for the GEM detector poses unusual fabrication and handling challenges because of its extraordinary size. It will be more than 30% larger in diameter than the largest existing particle detector coils. Each of the two coil elements that compose the air-core solenoid, will be about 19 meters in diameter and 15 meters long. Major components weighing as much as 1500 Mg must be transported and manipulated at the Interaction Region 5 (IR5) fabrication site of the SSC Laboratory as the magnets are fabricated. Because of their large size, the magnets will be fabricated, assembled and tested at special purpose facilities at the IR5 site. The site-use plan must accommodate the fabrication of other detector components and the assembly of large flux shaping iron structures in a timely manner to allow subsequent testing and detector assembly. Each cold mass will be composed of twelve 45-Mg coil windings that are joined prior to assembly into the 19-m diam annular cryostat.

Abstract

The GEM Detector magnet at the Superconducting Super Collider is built in two halves each of which is comprised of 12 single layer superconducting coil modules wound on a 19 m mean diameter and joined with a low resistance lap joint employing the superconducting strands and a copper stabilizer. Each joint half is attached to the sheathed, cable-in-conduit conductor end, and assembly of the mating halves is completed in the field. The target resistance per joint is 5 X [10.sup.-10] [Omega] at an operating current of 50 kA. Details of the joint design, its cooling and results of tests on prototypical sub- and full-scale models using superconducting strands are presented.

Abstract

The Gammas, Electrons and Muons detector magnet is a key component of the Superconducting Super Collider accelerator. Its features include a solenoid coil made of aluminum-sheathed cable-in-conduit conductors for an operating current of 50 kA. Designed for on-site winding and assembly, it provides a magnetic field of 0.8 T and stores 2.5 GJ of energy. The magnet also employs a natural thermosiphon loop for cooling by thermal radiation.

A production line for the Tokamak Physics Experiment demonstration cable-in-conduit conductor (CICC) was designed, constructed and tested. The line was found capable of generating up to 500 meters of CICCs and is scalable up to 1.5 km long. It features a payoff spool, drawing station, welding station and a takeup spool.
