Abstract

The synthesis, characterization, and crystal and molecular structures of C2H10N22+.Cr2O72- are described. The structure of this compound was determined by X-ray crystallography and showed that the C2H10N22+ organic cations are bound to the Cr2O7- anions by N-H ... O hydrogen-bonding interactions [2.988(3) Angstrom and 92.30(17)degrees].

Abstract

The compounds (BH) (CrO3F) (I) and (BH)(2) (Cr3O10) (II), where B=2-methylquinoline, have been synthesized. Compound (I) was prepared by reaction between chromium (VI) trioxide, hydrogen fluoride and organic base in aqueous medium. Compound (II) was also synthesized in aqueous medium from (I) and chromium (VI) trioxide. Compounds (I) and (II) have been characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and electronic spectra. The molecular structure of compound (II) was determined by X-ray crystallography and showed that the C10H9NH+ organic cations are bound to Cr3O102- anions by significant C-H...O hydrogen-bonding interaction. The trichromate ion consists of three nearly tetrahedral CrO4 groups joined through shared oxygen atoms. The conformation of the Cr3O102-. anion is different from that of the same anion in Rb2Cr3O10 and dipyrazinium trichromate.
