Abstract

This paper proposes a generative approach for the automatic typesetting of books in desktop publishing. The presented system consists in a computer script that operates inside a widely used design software tool and implements a generative process based on several typographic rules, styles and principles which have been identified in the literature. The performance of the proposed system is tested through an experiment which included the evaluation of its outputs with people. The results reveal the ability of the system to consistently create varied book designs from the same input content as well as visually coherent book designs with different contents while complying with fundamental typographic principles., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Computational approaches are beginning to be used to design dynamic visual identities fuelled by data and generative processes. In this work, we explore these computational approaches in order to generate a visual identity that creates bespoke letterings and images. We achieve this developing a generative design system that automatically assembles black and white visual modules. This system generates designs performing two main methods: (i) Assisted generation; and (ii) Automatic generation. Assisted generation method produces outputs wherein the placement of modules is determined by a configuration file previous defined. On the other hand, the Automatic generation method produces outputs wherein the modules are assembled to depict an input image. This system speeds up the process of design and deployment of one visual identity design as well as it generates outputs visual coherent among them. 19. Elucidating the role of G-Protein Coupled Receptors (GPCRs) via multi-omics analyses in Bardet-Biedl Syndrome

Abstract

Bardet-Biedl syndrome (BBS) is a monogenic cause of obesity and has provided intriguing links to ciliary dysfunction and the development of obesity. It has been established, in the last decade, that the aetiology of BBS lies in dysfunction of the primary cilium. Primary cilia are found on most eukaryotic cells including neurons and have a crucial role acting as signalling antennae. The most common phenotypic features developed by most BBS patients is recapitulated in almost all Bbs mouse models. Key to the function of the primary cilium is its capacity to integrate into its membrane a high concentration of specialised receptors, including G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). To date, several GPCRs known to regulate energy homeostasis and food behaviour have been localised to neuronal primary cilia including MCHR1, SSTR3, NPY2R, GALR2, and dopamine receptors D1. Within this thesis I propose to set up a clear pipeline for GPCR screening with high-throughput technology, enabling any lab to have a clear view of the disrupted receptors or future drug candidate targets. The proposed project generated a substantial amount of proteomics data for cells lacking the Bbs1 gene and most importantly specific cilia proteomics data which has been shared with other researchers in order to continue the investigation of cilia pathologies and as a tool to discover new drug targets. NPY and KISS receptors were identified as being disrupted in cells lacking cilia formation. Its association with Bbs1, represents compelling evidence in support of lack of recruitment of GPCRs upon Bbs1 KO in IMCD3 cells. Therefore, understanding the defects of the downstream signalling of GPCRs in BBS will not only increase the likelihood of improved and novel therapies for this debilitating disorder, but in doing so may also pave the way for therapeutic interventions for common related disorders.

28. Speed Benchmarking of Genetic Programming Frameworks

Abstract

Genetic Programming (GP) is known to suffer from the burden of being computationally expensive by design. While, over the years, many techniques have been developed to mitigate this issue, data vectorization, in particular, is arguably still the most attractive strategy due to the parallel nature of GP. In this work, we employ a series of benchmarks meant to compare both the performance and evolution capabilities of different vectorized and iterative implementation approaches across several existing frameworks. Namely, TensorGP, a novel open-source engine written in Python, is shown to greatly benefit from the TensorFlow library to accelerate the domain evaluation phase in GP. The presented performance benchmarks demonstrate that the TensorGP engine manages to pull ahead, with relative speedups above two orders of magnitude for problems with a higher number of fitness cases. Additionally, as a consequence of being able to compute larger domains, we argue that TensorGP performance gains aid the discovery of more accurate candidate solutions.

Abstract

In this paper, we resort to the TensorFlow framework to investigate the benefits of applying data vectorization and fitness caching methods to domain evaluation in Genetic Programming. For this purpose, an independent engine was developed, TensorGP, along with a testing suite to extract comparative timing results across different architectures and amongst both iterative and vectorized approaches. Our performance benchmarks demonstrate that by exploiting the TensorFlow eager execution model, performance gains of up to two orders of magnitude can be achieved on a parallel approach running on dedicated hardware when compared to a standard iterative approach., Comment: To be published in the 24th International Conference on the Applications of Evolutionary Computation proceedings. 16 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Typefaces are an essential resource employed by graphic designers. The increasing demand for innovative type design work increases the need for good technological means to assist the designer in the creation of a typeface. We present an evolutionary computation approach for the generation of type stencils to draw coherent glyphs for different characters. The proposed system employs a Genetic Algorithm to evolve populations of type stencils. The evaluation of each candidate stencil uses a hill climbing algorithm to search the best configurations to draw the target glyphs.
