Abstract

Menopause is due to the gradual drop in ovarian hormonal secretion, and, during this period, many women have symptoms that compromise quality of life. Hormone therapy (HT) has emerged as an important tool to alleviate climacteric symptoms. However, suspicions were raised about the correlation between treatment and the increased risk of breast cancer (BC). The present study aims to evaluate the relationship between BC and HT, covering the implications of therapy for menopausal symptoms, the incidence of neoplasia and mortality. This is a narrative review of the literature, in which articles published between July 2010 and July 2020 were searched for in the LILACS, MEDLINE and SciELO databases. The main types of HT are estrogen alone and combined formula with progesterone. In the studies analyzed, combined therapy was related to a higher incidence of BC when compared to the estrogenic regimen. According to the literature, changes in mammographic density, induced by HT, can increase the risk for breast carcinoma. The articles reported that factors other than hormone therapy, such as lifestyle, can interfere with the incidence of BC and should be analyzed individually. Mortality from BC influenced by HT did not show a significant increase. Overall, HT was considered to be the most effective treatment for relieving climacteric symptoms. Although, long-term studies that analyze the risks and reliability of therapy should be encouraged in order to indicate the safest therapeutics and to avoid unnecessary interventions.

15. Ecohydrology of temporary ponds

Abstract

Temporary ponds (TP) comprise a complex ecohydrology and are extremely vulnerable to habitat degradation. These ecosystems contain species rarely found elsewhere but the environments are highly exposed to human and climate change pressures. TP have been recognised as priority habitats for conservation in Europe by the Habitats Directive, and work towards improved knowledge, understanding and conservation has increased since. This thesis focuses on the ecohydrological controls on the cladoceran species and communities in coastal temporary ponds in two geographic regions along a northwest Europe latitudinal gradient: the northwest coast of Ireland and the southwest coast of Portugal. It explores local time-variance in two dune slack ponds at Sheskinmore, Co. Donegal, Ireland, local spatial-variance across 24 ponds at the same site, and regional controls on temporary pond Cladocera ecohydrology at two sites in southwest Portugal (Malhão (MAL) and Vila do Bispo (VB)). The focus of investigation here is the seasonal hydrological balance and dependence of this dynamic on the ecology and biology of the habitats. This research aims to achieve a better understanding of individual, local and regional ecohydrological dynamics of TP's and characterise the drivers of ecosystem variation within. Results uncover that ponds and slacks of Sheskinmore are highly dependent on rainfall and their vulnerability is confirmed when precipitation levels are not met. Increased variability inter-annually of cladocerans as opposed to intra-annual seasonal variation showed this. Weather changeability is the most important aspect of future climate change but there is a complex interaction between weather variability, local hydroregime and topography of a waterbody, impacting species' temporal and spatial assemblages varyingly. Spatial dynamics of these dune ponds evaluated that within a rather small area, cladoceran composition differs, mainly according to hydrological categories, which are then linked to proximity of each site to the water table. Water chemistry was not so relevant to the spatial patterns in species. At a regional scale, sediment composition and water chemistry were better predictors of differentiation of the cladoceran composition within the Portuguese ponds, rather than geomorphological differentiations between regions. MAL ponds contained higher cladoceran abundance, whereas VB ponds contained higher cladoceran richness. Regionally, cladoceran communities are shaped by a combination of important factors and explanations vary according to the individual characteristics and to the collective groups of ponds. Results corroborate the importance of hydrology, topology and climatic factors as ecological drivers of ecosystem functioning in TP. This work demonstrates the uniqueness and sensitivity of TPs, therefore supporting the need to conserve these habitats.

Abstract

Retailers face increasing competitive pressure to determine how best to deliver products purchased online to the end customer. Grocery retailers often require attended home delivery where the customer must be present to receive the delivery. For attended home delivery to function, the retailer and customer must agree on a delivery time slot that works for both parties. Using online data from a grocery retailer, we observe customer preferences for three delivery service attributes associated with each time slot: speed, precision, and timing. We define speed as the expected time between the placement of an order and its delivery, precision as the duration of the offered time slot, and timing as the availability of choices across times of the day and days of the week. We show that customers not only value speed as an attribute of delivery service but that precision and timing are also key drivers of the customer's time slot selection process. We also observe substantial customer heterogeneity in the willingness of customers to pay for time slots. Customers that differ in their loyalty to the retailer, basket value, basket size, and basket composition exhibit distinct differences in their willingness to pay. We show that retailers with the capability to tailor their time slot offerings to specific customer segments have the potential to generate approximately 9% more shipping revenue than those who cannot. Our findings inform practitioners seeking to design competitive fulfillment strategies and academics modeling customer behavior in the attended home delivery context. Methodology: This work consists of carrying out a literature review, to explore existing knowledge about bus fleet maintenance and project management. Results: The expected result is that this contribution increase interest in the production of knowledge regarding project management and maintenance management. Which may result in increased maintenance efficiency due to the increase in available knowledge. Originality: At the time of this review, no articles are associated with managing bus fleet maintenance projects. This gap persists in research related to project management and land transport. Abstract

Purpose: Agency relationships arise whenever one-party hires another to make decisions on their behalf that maximise their interests. In inventory management, under the Vendor Managed Inventory strategy, retailers delegate authority to their suppliers to manage their inventories. This relationship between retailers and suppliers opens the possibility of agency relationships, mainly through the adoption of opportunistic behaviour by one of the parties that plays a non-cooperative game. The aim of the following article is to understand how Vendor Managed Inventory can avoid the existence of agency behaviours. Methodology: The methodology adopted for the development of the article corresponds to an exploratory survey of the literature. Its aim is to: (1) evaluate the existing literature on the two topics discussed, Agency Theory and VMI, and (2) assess, through the literature, the possibility of conflicts of interest in the supplier-retailer business relationship, from the perspective of the supplier to the retailer and from the perspective of the retailer to the supplier. Results: The investigation revealed that in traditional inventory management, the agency relationship is defined by the retailer as principal and supplier as agent, while in a VMI strategy the roles are reversed. In the VMI strategy scenario, the specifications of the VMI contract make it possible to limit the behavior of suppliers, preventing the existence of opportunism. Research limitations: The results achieved in this article are limited by the lack of practical data that can confirm the instructions extracted from exploratory literature research. Originality: This study aims to contribute to the literature by increasing existing theoretical knowledge and in a practical way for companies. The study's contribution to the literature is essentially reflected in the increased knowledge of the interconnection of the two themes, Vendor Managed Inventory and Agency Theory, given that the number of studies in the literature that directly link the two themes is small. Abstract

Introduction: Thyroid hormones have systemic effects on the human body and play a key role in the development and function of virtually all tissues. They are regulated via the hypothalamic–pituitary–thyroid (HPT) axis and have a heritable component. Using genetic information, we applied tissue-specific transcriptome-wide association studies (TWAS) and plasma proteome-wide association studies (PWAS) to elucidate gene products related to thyrotropin (TSH) and free thyroxine (FT4) levels. Results: TWAS identified 297 and 113 transcripts associated with TSH and FT4 levels, respectively (25 shared), including transcripts not identified by genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of these traits, demonstrating the increased power of this approach. Testing for genetic colocalization revealed a shared genetic basis of 158 transcripts with TSH and 45 transcripts with FT4, including independent, FT4-associated genetic signals within the CAPZB locus that were differentially associated with CAPZB expression in different tissues. PWAS identified 18 and ten proteins associated with TSH and FT4, respectively (HEXIM1 and QSOX2 with both). Among these, the cognate genes of five TSH- and 7 FT4-associated proteins mapped outside significant GWAS loci. Colocalization was observed for five plasma proteins each with TSH and FT4. There were ten TSH and one FT4-related gene(s) significant in both TWAS and PWAS. Of these, ANXA5 expression and plasma annexin A5 levels were inversely associated with TSH (PWAS: P = 1.18 × 10−13, TWAS: P = 7.61 × 10−12 (whole blood), P = 6.40 × 10−13 (hypothalamus), P = 1.57 × 10−15 (pituitary), P = 4.27 × 10−15 (thyroid)), supported by colocalizations. Abstract

Plant proteins often carry off-notes, necessitating customized aroma addition. In vitro studies revealed protein-aroma binding, limiting release during consumption. This study employs in vivo nose space proton transfer reaction-time-of-flight-mass spectrometry and dynamic sensory evaluation (time intensity) to explore in-mouth interactions. In a lupin protein-based aqueous system, a sensory evaluation of a trained “green” attribute was conducted simultaneously with aroma release of hexanal, nonanal, and 2-nonanone during consumption. Results demonstrated that enlarging aldehyde chains and relocating the keto group reduced maximum perceived intensity (Imax_R) by 71.92 and 72.25%. Protein addition decreased Imax_R by 30.91, 36.84, and 72.41%, indicating protein-aroma interactions. Sensory findings revealed a perceived intensity that was lower upon protein addition. Aroma lingering correlated with aroma compounds’ volatility and hydrophobicity, with nonanal exhibiting the longest persistence. In vitro mucin addition increased aroma binding four to 12-fold. Combining PTR-ToF-MS and time intensity elucidated crucial food behavior, i.e., protein-aroma interactions, that are pivotal for food design.
