10. Children's perceptions of race and ethnicity in media: a 25-year update to children now.

Abstract

In 1998, Children Now surveyed 1,200 U.S. 10- to 17-year-olds about TV racial depictions, finding white children reported the most visibility. As a 25-year update, we surveyed 834 U.S. 10- to 17-year-olds: Asian/Asian American (n = 177), Black (n = 206), Hispanic (n = 150), Indigenous/Native American (n = 86), and white (n = 215). More youth now say it's important to see their race in media, but fewer report seeing their group, with Hispanic and Asian youth reporting the lowest frequencies. Overall, youth perceived disparities: 93% said there were 'enough' white characters; fewer said there were enough Black (54%), Hispanic (43%), Asian (32%), and Indigenous (19%) characters. Perceptions of qualities varied, with Indigenous characters scoring lowest in positive qualities and Black and Hispanic characters highest in negative qualities. Indigenous, Hispanic, and Asian/Asian American youth perceived fewer positive ingroup representations than white and Black youth. 11. Effect of Dietary Short-Chain Fatty Acids on the Immune Status and Disease Resistance of European Seabass Juveniles.

Abstract

(1) Background: This study aimed to evaluate the potential of short-chain fatty acids as functional ingredients to improve the immune status and disease resistance of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. (2) Methods: For that purpose, triplicate groups of fish with an initial body weight of 15.2 ± 0.03 g were fed isoproteic (43% crude protein) and isolipidic (18% crude lipids) diets supplemented with sodium acetate (SA), sodium propionate (SP), and sodium butyrate (SB) at two inclusion levels: 0.25% and 0.50%. An unsupplemented diet was used as a control. After 56 days of feeding with the experimental diets, fish were intraperitoneally (i.p.) injected with 100 µL of Vibrio anguillarum (1.2 × 107 Colony Forming Units (CFU)/mL) and mortality was recorded for 3 weeks. At the end of the trial, there were no differences in survival between the treatment groups and the control, but survival was higher in fish fed the diet supplemented with SB 0.50 than SP 0.25 (93.3 vs. 66.7%). Compared to the pre-challenge values, and regardless of diet composition, all hematological parameters (hemoglobin, hematocrit, red blood cells, white blood cells) measured decreased after 4 h of bacterial challenge, except for neutrophils which were increased. Independently of diet composition, lysozyme and nitric oxide decreased at 4 and 24 h post infection. Compared to the control, diets supplemented with SA and SP promoted an up-regulation of both pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines at 4 h after the challenge, while the diets supplemented with SB promoted an up-regulation of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines at 24 h after the challenge. (3) Conclusions: Overall, present results suggest that SA and SP provide a fast response to a bacterial challenge in European sea bass juveniles, while SB provides increased survival. 12. Audiovisual Media Content Preferences of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders: Insights from Parental Interviews

Abstract

Most research on the media use of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) focuses on media device use and less on content preferences of these children. We interviewed parents (N = 31) of children with ASD to examine parental observations of their children's audiovisual media content preferences. Thematic analysis of the in-depth interviews found children with ASD preferred media content with features aimed at younger audiences. Parents also reported that content that fostered imitation was appealing to their children, occasionally with observable benefits (e.g., verbalizing words of favorite characters). Additionally, parents indicated that ease of control (e.g., content repetition) and ease of use (e.g., accessibility) made mainstream appealing to their children. Parents reported limited awareness of apps designed specifically for children with ASD.

16. O antipositivismo como viés de resistência no feminismo decolonial

Abstract

O presente trabalho buscou analisar o feminismo decolonial como uma fonte de resistência ao positivismo. A partir da revisão bibliográfica e sob as lentes da decolonialidade, no primeiro ponto, o trabalho buscou apontar a criminologia crítica como importante resistência ao positivismo criminológico ao indicar a classe como marco de seleção dos indivíduos no sistema de justiça criminal e denunciar as violências e opressões institucionais. Sem esquecer os silêncios dessa teoria, no segundo ponto a América Latina foi trazida à análise, enquanto margem do mundo colonizada, e fortemente influenciada pelo positivismo criminológico na sua justificativa da existência da hierarquia de raças. A partir desses entendimentos foi possível indicar o feminismo decolonial responsável por interseccionar gênero, raça, classe, heterossexualidade, e outras seções como forma de resistência às tensões provocadas pela colonialidade de ser, saber, poder e de gênero. Como conclusões não limitadas, foi possível enxergar que tanto a criminologia crítica, quanto o feminismo decolonial buscaram manifestar as ideologias de dominação, e demonstrar as legitimações de poder baseadas no positivismo, que se fundou nas concepções de opressão e dominação da interseccionalidade de gênero, classe e raça.

Abstract

Simple Summary: SCFAs are considered functional ingredients as they promote the growth and health of fish. This work aimed to assess the effect of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) on the immune status of the European sea bass gut through the ex vivo use of intestinal explants. The ex vivo technique significantly reduces the number of animals to be used, according to the guidelines of the 3Rs. The present results are important to understand how European sea bass respond to a bacterial infection after the administration of SCFAs and for the evaluation of functional ingredients used in aquaculture. This study aimed to evaluate the intestinal interactions between three short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), namely, acetate, propionate, and butyrate, and pathogenic bacteria (Vibrio anguillarum) in intestinal explants of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles. The anterior intestine of 12 fish with an average weight of 100 g (killed by excess anesthesia with 2-phenoxyethanol) were sampled and placed in 24-well plates. The experimental treatments consisted of a control medium and a control plus 1 mM or 10 mM of sodium acetate (SA), sodium butyrate (SB), and sodium propionate (SP). After 2 h of incubation, the explants were challenged with Vibrio anguillarum at 1 × 107 CFU/mL for 2 h. After the bacterial challenge, and regardless of the SCFA treatment, the oxidative stress-related genus catalase (cat) and superoxide dismutase (sod) were down-regulated and glutathione peroxidase (gpx) was up-regulated. Furthermore, the immune-related genes, i.e., the tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin 8 (IL-8), transforming growth factor (TGF-β), and nuclear factor (NF-Kβ) were also up-regulated, and interleukin 10 (IL-10) was down-regulated. During the pre-challenge, sodium propionate and sodium butyrate seemed to bind the G-protein coupled receptor (grp40L), increasing its expression. During the challenge, citrate synthase (cs) was down-regulated, indicating that the SCFAs were used as an energy source to increase the immune and oxidative responses. Abstract

Methionine (Met) is one of the most limiting essential amino acids in aquafeeds, and different commercial feed‐grade Met sources are available for diet supplementation, namely L‐Met, DL‐Met, and hydroxy‐Met (OH‐Met). In this work, we compared the bioefficacy of OH‐Met and DL‐Met as diet supplements for gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) juveniles reared at normal (22°C) and high (29°C) water temperatures. Two isoproteic (50%) and isolipidic (20%) practical diets (24% fish meal; 6% fish oil) were formulated to contain 1% Met and were supplemented with 0.2% DL‐Met (diet DL‐Met) or OH‐Met (diet OH‐Met). The diets were fed to triplicate groups of fish with an initial body weight of 13 g for 78 days. Growth performance and N retention (%) were higher at 29°C. However, feed efficiency, protein efficiency ratio, and hepatic and visceral indexes were higher at 22°C. Hepatic oxidative stress indicators were not affected by dietary Met source. In the muscle, however, oxidative stress index and lipid peroxidation were lower in fish fed the OH‐Met diets. Overall, DL‐Met and OH‐Met proved to be similarly effective as dietary methionine sources for gilthead seabream, while OH‐Met seemed to be more effective in reducing oxidative stress in fish reared at high temperatures. Abstract

Introdução: O abuso sexual infantil acontece no momento em que uma criança é coagida à atividade sexual. Cerca de 80% dos abusos são intrafamiliares, tornando esse tipo de violência um crime velado e de real prevalência desconhecida. Metodologia: Trata-se de uma revisão literária baseada em artigos retirados das bases de dados SciELO e MedLine, por meio da consulta ao DeCs, através do descritor: abuso sexual infantil. Resultado: Foram selecionadas 4 fontes para serem utilizados como referencial para este artigo Discussão: Fatores como o medo de represálias, as ameaças do agressor, a falta de educação sexual, o medo de ser desacreditado e a falta de preparo profissional para o reconhecimento de tal crime favorecem a subnotificação do tipo de violência sexual mais comum contra crianças e adolescentes, a intrafamiliar. Conclusão: O abuso sexual é um crime velado. Evidencia-se a necessidade de mais estudos sobre a real prevalência e medidas de educação, prevenção e proteção para as vítimas.

Abstract

A Síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison (ZES) é caracterizada pelo desenvolvimento de doença péptica ácida, devido à hipersecreção de ácido gástrico induzida pela liberação ectópica de gastrina por tumor neuroendócrino (NET), um gastrinoma. Cerca de 80% dos gastrinomas causadores de ZES são esporádicos, os outros 20% estão associados à Neoplasia Endócrina Múltipla tipo 1 (NEM-1), doença autossômica dominante, associada à predisposição para tumores nas glândulas paratireoides, pâncreas e hipófise. Cerca de 50% dos pacientes com NEM-1 têm a Síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison, logo a Neoplasia endócrina múltipla tipo 1 deve ser incluída em uma avaliação se o ZES for altamente suspeito. O trabalho objetiva identificar a ocorrência de Síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison em pacientes com NEM-1, visto que os gastrinomas são forma de apresentação comum da Neoplasia Endócrina Múltipa tipo 1 e importante causa de morbimortalidade em indivíduos com a doença. Trata-se de pesquisa bibliográfica, de natureza qualitativa realizada a partir de revisão sistemática da literatura atual. As bases de dados consultadas foram: Medical Literature Analysis and Retrievel System Online (MEDLINE) e Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS), utilizando-se os termos “Síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison”, “Neoplasia Endócrina Múltipla tipo 1” e “Gastrinoma”. Foram encontrados 559 artigos, dos quais 32 foram incluídos no trabalho. Os critérios determinantes da amostra: 1) Artigos com data de publicação em periódicos nos últimos 5 anos, e 2) Artigos que versavam especificamente sobre o tema. A Síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison é frequente em pacientes com Neoplasia Endócrina Múltipla do tipo 1, sendo de alta relevância o diagnóstico de NEM-1 em pacientes afetados pelos gastrinomas. Ressalta-se a importância do tratamento de condições como hiperparatireoidismo e descontinuação do uso de Inibidores de Bomba de Prótons por pelo menos 48h para diagnóstico confiável da ZES. É relevante considerar o uso da abordagem ultrasonográfica associada ao receptor de somatostatina-PET/CT no diagnóstico de ZES e NEM-1. A alta incidência dos gastrinomas em pacientes com Neoplasia Endócrina Múltipla do tipo 1, faz seu diagnóstico precoce de suma importância para condução dos casos, visto que a abordagem terapêutica difere entre os casos individuais de Síndrome de Zollinger-Ellison e os casos associados à NEM-1.

45. Social Aggression on Television and Its Relationship to Children's Aggression in the Classroom

Abstract

A survey was conducted with over 500 children in grades K-5 to examine whether exposure to socially aggressive content was related to children's use of social aggression. The results of the survey revealed a significant relationship between exposure to televised social aggression and increased social aggression at school, but only for girls and not for boys. Although this relationship was dependent on the sex of the child, the study is the first to provide evidence that viewing social aggression on television is related to an increased tendency for elementary school children to perpetrate such behaviors in the classroom. The findings are discussed in terms of social cognitive theory and information processing theory.
