Context. Jupiter-family comets (JFCs), which originate from the Kuiper belt and scattered disk, exhibit low-inclination and chaotic trajectories due to close encounters with Jupiter. Despite their typically short incursions into the inner solar system, a notable number of them are on Earth-crossing orbits, with fireball networks detecting many objects on ``JFC-like'' (2 < TJ < 3) orbits. Aims. This investigation aims to examine the orbital dynamics of JFCs and comet-like fireballs over 10,000 yr timescales, focusing on the trajectories and stability of these objects in the context of gravitational interactions within the solar system. Methods. We employed an extensive fireball dataset from the Desert Fireball Network (DFN), European Fireball Network (EFN), Fireball Recovery and InterPlanetary Observation Network (FRIPON), and Meteorite Observation and Recovery Project (MORP), alongside telescopically observed cometary ephemeris from the NASA HORIZONS database. The study integrates 646 fireball orbits with 661 JFC orbits for a comparative analysis of their orbital stability and evolution. Results. The analysis confirms frequent Jupiter encounters among most JFCs, inducing chaotic orbital behavior with limited predictability and short Lyapunov lifetimes (about 120 years), underscoring Jupiter`s significant dynamical influence. In contrast, ``JFC-like'' meteoroids detected by fireball networks largely exhibit dynamics divergent from genuine JFCs, with 79-92% on ``JFC-like'' orbits shown not to be prone to frequent Jupiter encounters; in particular, only 1-5% of all fireballs detected by the four networks exhibit dynamics similar to that of actual JFCs. In addition, 22% (16 of 72) of near-Earth JFCs are on highly stable orbits, suggesting a potential main belt origin for some of the bodies., Comment: Published in Astronomy & Astrophysics (31 pages, 21 figures)

Context. Centaurs go around the Sun between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune. Only a fraction of the known centaurs have been found to display comet-like features. Comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 is the most remarkable active centaur. It orbits the Sun just beyond Jupiter in a nearly circular path. Only a handful of known objects follow similar trajectories. Aims. We present photometric observations of 2020 MK4, a recently found centaur with an orbit not too different from that of 29P, and we perform a preliminary exploration of its dynamical evolution. Methods. We analyzed broadband Cousins R and Sloan g', r', and i' images of 2020 MK4 acquired with the Jacobus Kapteyn Telescope and the IAC80 telescope to search for cometary-like activity, and to derive its surface colors and size. Its orbital evolution was studied using direct N-body simulations. Results. Centaur 2020 MK4 is neutral-gray in color and has a faint, compact cometary-like coma. The values of its color indexes, (g'-r')=0.42+/-0.04 and (r'-i')=0.17+/-0.04, are similar to the solar ones. A lower limit for the absolute magnitude of the nucleus is Hg=11.30+/-0.03 mag which, for an albedo in the range of 0.1-0.04, gives an upper limit for its size in the interval (23, 37) km. Its orbital evolution is very chaotic and 2020 MK4 may be ejected from the Solar System during the next 200 kyr. Comet 29P experienced relatively close flybys with 2020 MK4 in the past, sometimes when they were temporary Jovian satellites. Conclusions. We confirm the presence of a coma of material around a central nucleus. Its surface colors place this centaur among the most extreme members of the gray group. Although its past, present, and future dynamical evolution resembles that of 29P, more data are required to confirm or reject a possible connection between the two objects and perhaps others., Comment: 15 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables, 3 appendixes. Some recent results concerning a particle confined in a one-dimensional box with moving walls are briefly reviewed. By exploiting the same techniques used for the 1D problem, we investigate the behavior of a quantum particle confined in a two-dimensional box (a 2D billiard) whose walls are moving, by recasting the relevant mathematical problem with moving boundaries in the form of a problem with fixed boundaries and time-dependent Hamiltonian. Changes of the shape of the box are shown to be important, as it clearly emerges from the comparison between the "pantographic", case (same shape of the box through all the process) and the case with deformation., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures

We reconsider the effect of indistinguishability on the reduced density operator of the internal degrees of freedom (tracing out the spatial degrees of freedom) for a quantum system composed of identical particles located in different spatial regions. We explicitly show that if the spin measurements are performed in disjoint spatial regions then there are no constraints on the structure of the reduced state of the system. This implies that the statistics of identical particles has no role from the point of view of separability and entanglement when the measurements are spatially separated. We extend the treatment to the case of n particles and show the connection with some recent criteria for separability based on subalgebras of observables., Comment: 10 pages

Several experiments have been performed to investigate the mechanical vibrations associated with trachea and larynx when Italian vowels are emitted. The mechanical measurements have been made by using two laser Doppler vibrometers (based on the well-known not-invasive optical measurement technique) coupled with the acoustic field measured by high-quality certified microphones. The recorded signals are analyzed by using well-established methods in time and frequency domains. The signals of the mechanical vibrations along the trachea and the larynx are compared with those of the acoustic ones. Focusing the attention of the signals' onsets, we can observe an upward propagation of the mechanical vibrations for which it is possible to estimate a delay between the traces. We observe that the mechanical oscillations at the trachea start before the larynx and acoustic oscillations. Moreover these tracheal oscillations are self-oscillations in time and are associated with the pitch production, indicating a further hydrodynamic instability at trachea. This leads to new insights in the mechanism controlling the pitch in the speech.

A simple algebraic approach to the study of multipartite entanglement for pure states is introduced together with a class of suitable functionals able to detect entanglement. On this basis, some known results are reproduced. Indeed, by investigating the properties of the introduced functionals, it is shown that a subset of such class is strictly connected to the purity. Moreover, a direct and basic solution to the problem of the simultaneous maximization of three appropriate functionals for three-qubit states is provided, confirming that the simultaneous maximization of the entanglement for all possible bipartitions is compatible only with the structure of GHZ-states.

This work faces the problem of the origin of the logarithmic character of the Gompertzian growth. We show that the macroscopic, deterministic Gompertz equation describes the evolution from the initial state to the final stationary value of the median of a log-normally distributed, stochastic process. Moreover, by exploiting a stochastic variational principle, we account for self-regulating feature of Gompertzian growths provided by self-consistent feedback of relative density variations. This well defined conceptual framework shows its usefulness by allowing a reliable control of the growth by external actions.

The Gompertz model describes the growth in time of the size of significant quantities associated to a large number of systems, taking into account nonlinearity features by a linear equation satisfied by a nonlinear function of the size. Following this scheme, we introduce a class of hierarchical maps which describe discrete sequences of intermediate characteristic scales. We find the general solutions of the maps, which account for a rich set of possible phenomena. Eventually, we provide an important application, by showing that a map belonging to the class so introduced generates all the observed astrophysical length and mass scales.

We describe the transverse beam distribution in particle accelerators within the controlled, stochastic dynamical scheme of the Stochastic Mechanics (SM) which produces time reversal invariant diffusion processes. This leads to a linearized theory summarized in a Shchr\"odinger--like (\Sl) equation. The space charge effects have been introduced in a recent paper~\cite{prstab} by coupling this \Sl equation with the Maxwell equations. We analyze the space charge effects to understand how the dynamics produces the actual beam distributions, and in particular we show how the stationary, self--consistent solutions are related to the (external, and space--charge) potentials both when we suppose that the external field is harmonic (\emph{constant focusing}), and when we \emph{a priori} prescribe the shape of the stationary solution. We then proceed to discuss a few new ideas~\cite{epac04} by introducing the generalized Student distributions, namely non--Gaussian, L\'evy \emph{infinitely divisible} (but not \emph{stable}) distributions. We will discuss this idea from two different standpoints: (a) first by supposing that the stationary distribution of our (Wiener powered) SM model is a Student distribution; (b) by supposing that our model is based on a (non--Gaussian) L\'evy process whose increments are Student distributed. We show that in the case (a) the longer tails of the power decay of the Student laws, and in the case (b) the discontinuities of the L\'evy--Student process can well account for the rare escape of particles from the beam core, and hence for the formation of a halo in intense beams., Comment: revtex4, 18 pages, 12 figures

Starting from generic bilinear Hamiltonians, constructed by covariant vector, bivector or tensor fields, it is possible to derive a general symplectic structure which leads to holonomic and anholonomic formulations of Hamilton equations of motion directly related to a hydrodynamic picture. We discuss an alternative approach to quintessence modifying the usual equation of state of the cosmological fluid in order to see if going further than the approximation of perfect fluid allows to better reproduce the available data. We consider a cosmological model comprising only two fluids, namely baryons (modelled as dust) and dark matter with a Van der Waals equation of state. First, the general features of the model are presented and then the evolution of the energy density, the Hubble parameter and the scale factor are determined showing that it is possible to obtain accelerated expansion choosing suitably the model parameters. We use the estimated age of the universe and the data on the dimensionless coordinate distances to Type Ia supernovae and distant radio galaxies to see whether Van der Waals quintessence is viable to explain dark energy and to constrain its parameters., Comment: JCAP accepted version; a new section has been added and the matching with the data has been repeated in a different way also evaluating the positions of the peaks in the CMBR anisotropy spectrum; it is now a 24 pages paper with 8 figures

Based on the generalized kinetic equation for the one-particle distribution function with a small source, the transition from the kinetic to the hydrodynamic description of many-particle systems is performed. The basic feature of this new technique to obtain the hydrodynamic limit is that the latter has been partially incorporated into the kinetic equation itself. The hydrodynamic equations for capillary fluids are derived from the characteristic function for the local moments of the distribution function. We consider Aerosol Index (AI) time-series extracted from TOMS archive for an area covering Italy $(7-18^o E ; 36-47^o N)$. The missing of convergence in estimating the embedding dimension of the system and the inability of the Independent Component Analysis (ICA) in separating the fluctuations from deterministic component of the signals are evidences of an intrinsic link between the periodic behavior of AI and its fluctuations. We prove that these time series are well described by a stochastic dynamical model. Moreover, the principal peak in the power spectrum of these signals can be explained whereby a stochastic resonance, linking variable external factors, such as Sun-Earth radiation budget and local insolation, and fluctuations on smaller spatial and temporal scale due to internal weather and antrophic components., Comment: 4 pages with 4 figures

We derive, in order of magnitude, the observed astrophysical and cosmological scales in the Universe, from neutron stars to superclusters of galaxies, up to, asymptotically, the observed radius of the Universe. This result is obtained by introducing a recursive scheme of alternating hierachical mechanisms of three-dimensional and two-dimensional close packings of gravitationally interacting objects. We study the nonstationary solutions of Fokker-Planck equations associated to either stationary or nonstationary quantum states. In particular we discuss the stationary states of quantum systems with singular velocity fields. We introduce a technique that allows to realize arbitrary evolutions ruled by these equations, to account for controlled quantum transitions. The method is illustrated by presenting the detailed treatment of the transition probabilities and of the controlling time-dependent potentials associated to the transitions between the stationary, the coherent, and the squeezed states of the harmonic oscillator. By resorting to the Fock--Bargmann representation, we incorporate the quantum Weyl--Heisenberg algebra, $q$-WH, into the theory of entire analytic functions. The $q$--WH algebra operators are realized in terms of finite difference operators in the $z$ plane. In order to exhibit the relevance of our study, several applications to different cases of physical interest are discussed: squeezed states and the relation between coherent states and theta functions on one side, lattice quantum mechanics and Bloch functions on the other, are shown to find a deeper mathematical understanding in terms of $q$-WH. The r\^ole played by the finite difference operators and the relevance of the lattice structure in the completeness of the coherent states system suggest that the quantization of the WH algebra is an essential tool in the physics of discretized (periodic) systems.

We show that generalized coherent states follow Schr\"{o}dinger dynamics in time-dependent potentials. The normalized wave-packets follow a classical evolution without spreading; in turn, the Schr\"{o}dinger potential depends on the state through the classical trajectory.
