We image and characterize the mechanical modes of a 2D drum resonator made of hBN suspended over a high-stress Si$_3$N$_4$ membrane. Our measurements demonstrate hybridization between various modes of the hBN resonator and those of the Si$_3$N$_4$ membrane. The measured resonance frequencies and spatial profiles of the modes are consistent with finite-element simulations based on an idealized geometry. Spectra of the thermal motion reveal that, depending on the degree of hybridization with modes of the heavier and higher-quality-factor Si$_3$N$_4$ membrane, the quality factors and the motional mass of the hBN drum modes can be shifted by orders of magnitude. This effect could be exploited to engineer hybrid drum/membrane modes that combine the low motional mass of 2D materials with the high quality factor of Si$_3$N$_4$ membranes for optomechanical or sensing applications., Comment: 16 pages, 4 figure, 1 supplementary section (6 pages, 3 figures)

Nanoscale magnetic imaging can provide microscopic information about length scales, inhomogeneity and interactions of materials systems. As such, it is a powerful tool to probe phenomena such as superconductivity, Mott insulating states and magnetically ordered states in 2D materials, which are sensitive to the local environment. We describe an apparatus for the implementation of hybrid optomechanical systems at 4 K. The platform is based on a high-finesse, micrometer-scale fiber Fabry-Perot cavity, which can be widely tuned using piezoelectric positioners. A mechanical resonator can be positioned within the cavity in the object-in-the-middle configuration by a second set of positioners. A high level of stability is achieved without sacrificing either performance or tunability, through the combination of a stiff mechanical design, passive vibration isolation, and an active Pound-Drever-Hall feedback lock incorporating a reconfigurable digital filter. Artificial spin ices are a class of metamaterials consisting of magnetostatically coupled nanomagnets. Their interactions give rise to emergent behavior, which has the potential to be harnessed for the creation of functional materials. Consequently, the ability to map the stray field of such systems can be decisive for gaining an understanding of their properties. Here, we use a scanning nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to image the magnetic stray field distribution of an artificial spin ice system exhibiting structural chirality as a function of applied magnetic fields at 4.2 K. The images reveal that the magnetostatic interaction gives rise to a measurable bending of the magnetization at the edges of the nanomagnets. Micromagnetic simulations predict that, owing to the structural chirality of the system, this edge bending is asymmetric in the presence of an external field and gives rise to a preferred direction for the reversal of the magnetization. This effect is not captured by models assuming a uniform magnetization. Our technique thus provides a promising means for understanding the collective response of artificial spin ices and their interactions.

Rebuilding damaged or diseased tissue by means of biological additive manufacturing has recently gained lot of attention and shown very promising result. Using biofabrication techniques to mimic and replicate natural tissue as well as cell environment is a very capable way to achieve physiologically relevant conditions. Especially in electrophysiological human tissue like cardiac or neural tissue, proper signal transduction is of paramount importance for appropriate function and cell maturation as well as differentiation. Precisely, these conductive properties are challenging to engineer. However, a lot of outstanding work has been done recently. Therefore, this review focuses on additives, i.e., nanocomposites with intrinsic conductive properties, to the usually nonconductive hydrogels used in 3D-bioprinting. Recent work on exploiting the properties of these nanocomposites, such as metal nanoparticles (NPs), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, or MXenes, to alter the nanoenvironment of the manufactured construct toward conductive tissues is presented. An overview of responsiveness to external stimuli, a second intrinsic property of such nanocomposites is provided as well. Furthermore, these materials are critically analyzed concerning their electrophysiology, i.e., cell–scaffold interaction, their biocompatibility as well as their toxicological properties.

Moir\'e superlattices in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures provide 20 an efficient way to engineer electron band properties. The recent discovery of exotic quantum phases and their interplay in twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) has built this moir\'e system one of the most renowned condensed matter platforms (1-10). So far the studies of tBLG has been mostly focused on the lowest two flat moir\'e bands at the first magic angle {\theta}m1 ~ 1.1{\deg}, leaving high-order moir\'e bands and magic angles largely unexplored. Here we report 25 an observation of multiple well-isolated flat moir\'e bands in tBLG close to the second magic angle {\theta}m2 ~ 0.5{\deg}, which cannot be explained without considering electron-election interactions. With high magnetic field magneto-transport measurements, we further reveal a qualitatively new, energetically unbound Hofstadter butterfly spectrum in which continuously extended quantized Landau level gaps cross all trivial band-gaps. The 30 connected Hofstadter butterfly strongly evidences the topologically nontrivial textures of the multiple moir\'e bands. Overall, our work provides a new perspective for understanding the quantum phases in tBLG and the fractal Hofstadter spectra of multiple topological bands.

We present a scanning magnetic force sensor based on an individual magnet-tipped GaAs nanowire (NW) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. Its magnetic tip consists of a final segment of single-crystal MnAs formed by sequential crystallization of the liquid Ga catalyst droplet. We characterize the mechanical and magnetic properties of such NWs by measuring their flexural mechanical response in an applied magnetic field. Comparison with numerical simulations allows the identification of their equilibrium magnetization configurations, which in some cases include magnetic vortices. To determine a NW's performance as a magnetic scanning probe, we measure its response to the field profile of a lithographically patterned current-carrying wire. The NWs' tiny tips and their high force sensitivity make them promising for imaging weak magnetic field patterns on the nanometer-scale, as required for mapping mesoscopic transport and spin textures or in nanometer-scale magnetic resonance., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Interest in creating magnetic metamaterials has led to methods for growing superstructures of magnetic nanoparticles. Mesoscopic crystals of maghemite ($\gamma\text{-Fe}_2\text{O}_3$) nanoparticles can be arranged into highly ordered body-centered tetragonal lattices of up to a few micrometers. Although measurements on disordered ensembles have been carried out, determining the magnetic properties of individual mesoscopic crystals is challenging due to their small total magnetic moment. Here, we overcome these challenges by utilizing sensitive dynamic cantilever magnetometry to study individual micrometer-sized $\gamma\text{-Fe}_2\text{O}_3$ mesocrystals. These measurements reveal an unambiguous cubic anisotropy, resulting from the crystalline anisotropy of the constituent maghemite nanoparticles and their alignment within the mesoscopic lattice. The signatures of anisotropy and its orgins come to light because we combine the self-assembly of highly ordered mesocrystals with the ability to resolve their individual magnetism. Nanometer-scale magnetization configurations known as magnetic skyrmions have mostly been studied in cubic chiral helimagnets, in which they are Bloch-type and their axes align along the applied magnetic field. In contrast, the orientation of N\'eel-type skyrmions is locked to the polar axis of the host material's underlying crystal structure. In the lacunar spinels $\mathrm{Ga}{\mathrm{V}}_{4}{\mathrm{S}}_{8}$ and $\mathrm{Ga}{\mathrm{V}}_{4}{\mathrm{Se}}_{8}$, the N\'eel-type skyrmion lattice phase exists for externally applied magnetic fields parallel to this axis and withstands oblique magnetic fields up to some critical angle. Here, we map out the stability of the skyrmion lattice phase in both crystals as a function of field angle and magnitude using dynamic cantilever magnetometry. The measured phase diagrams reproduce the major features predicted by a recent theoretical model, including a reentrant cycloidal phase in $\mathrm{Ga}{\mathrm{V}}_{4}{\mathrm{Se}}_{8}$. Nonetheless, we observe a greater robustness of the skyrmion phase to oblique fields, suggesting possible refinements to the model. Besides identifying transitions between the cycloidal, skyrmion lattice, and ferromagnetic states in the bulk, we measure additional anomalies in $\mathrm{Ga}{\mathrm{V}}_{4}{\mathrm{Se}}_{8}$ and assign them to magnetic states confined to polar structural domain walls.

We demonstrate the use of individual magnetic nanowires (NWs), grown by focused-electron-beam-induced deposition (FEBID), as scanning magnetic force sensors. Measurements of their mechanical susceptibility, thermal motion, and magnetic response show that these NWs possess high-quality flexural mechanical modes and a strong remanent magnetization pointing along their long axis. Together, these properties make the NWs excellent sensors of weak magnetic field patterns, as confirmed by calibration measurements on a micron-sized current-carrying wire and magnetic scanning-probe images of a permalloy disk. We report a magnetic state in GaV4Se8 which emerges exclusively in samples with mesoscale polar domains and not in polar mono-domain crystals. It is manifested by a sharp anomaly in the magnetic susceptibility and the magnetic torque, distinct from other anomalies observed also in polar mono-domain samples upon transitions between the cycloidal, the Néel-type skyrmion lattice and the ferromagnetic states. We ascribe this additional transition to the transformation of distinct magnetic textures, confined to polar domain walls (DW), to the ferromagnetic (FM) state. The emergence of these DW-confined magnetic states is likely driven by the mismatch of different spin spirals, hosted by the adjacent domains. A clear anomaly in the magneto-current indicates that the DW-confined magnetic states also have strong contributions to the magnetoelectric response. We expect polar DWs to commonly host such confined magnetic edge states and, thus, offer a fertile ground to explore novel forms of magnetism.

This chapter focuses on ferromagnetic nanotubes (FNTs) and their experimental investigation by techniques capable of measuring the response of individual specimens. This capability has developed recently and is now having a strong impact on our understanding of the behavior of real FNT structures. Despite the wealth of predictions on the equilibrium configurations and reversal modes of FNTs, direct experimental evidence of their magnetic behavior has emerged only recently. This is partly due to the difficulty of measuring individual magnetic nanostructures with many conventional magnetometry techniques, which do not have the necessary sensitivity to detect the small total magnetic moment of a single nanomagnet. As a result, measurements of their magnetic properties are often carried out on large ensembles, whose constituent nanomagnets have a distribution of size, shape, and orientation and—depending on the density—may interact with each other. These complications conspire to make accurate characterization of the stable magnetization configurations and reversal processes difficult. To obtain a clear understanding of the magnetic properties of FNTs, it is therefore advantageous to investigate individual specimens. We review such efforts, which include measurements of magnetoresistence, torque magnetometry, X-ray microscopy, scanning SQUID microscopy, and magnetic force microscopy.

Electrons driven through a suspended carbon nanotube by a constant bias excite mechanical vibrations — including self-sustaining oscillations — and, in some cases, even suppress them down to only a few quanta.

Nanometer-scale structures with high aspect ratio such as nanowires and nanotubes combine low mechanical dissipation with high resonance frequencies, making them ideal force transducers and scanning probes in applications requiring the highest sensitivity. Such structures promise record force sensitivities combined with ease of use in scanning probe microscopes. A wide variety of possible material compositions and functionalizations is available, allowing for the sensing of various kinds of forces with optimized sensitivity. In addition, nanowires possess quasi-degenerate mechanical mode doublets, which has allowed the demonstration of sensitive vectorial force and mass detection. These developments have driven researchers to use nanowire cantilevers in various force sensing applications, which include imaging of sample surface topography, detection of optomechanical, electrical, and magnetic forces, and magnetic resonance force microscopy. In this review, we discuss the motivation behind using nanowires as force transducers, explain the methods of force sensing with nanowire cantilevers, and give an overview of the experimental progress and future prospects of the field.

We use a scanning nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) to image individual vortices in amorphous superconducting MoSi thin films. Spatially resolved measurements of the magnetic field generated by both vortices and Meissner screening satisfy the Pearl model for vortices in thin films and yield values for the Pearl length and bulk penetration depth at 4.2 K. Flux pinning is observed and quantified through measurements of vortex motion driven by both applied currents and thermal activation. The effects of pinning are also observed in metastable vortex configurations, which form as the applied magnetic field is reduced and magnetic flux is expelled from the film. Self-assembled nanowire (NW) crystals can be grown into nearly defect-free nanomechanical resonators with exceptional properties, including small motional mass, high resonant frequency, and low dissipation. Furthermore, by virtue of slight asymmetries in geometry, a NW's flexural modes are split into doublets oscillating along orthogonal axes. These characteristics make bottom-up grown NWs extremely sensitive vectorial force sensors. Here, taking advantage of its adaptability as a scanning probe, we use a single NW to image a sample surface. By monitoring the frequency shift and direction of oscillation of both modes as we scan above the surface, we construct a map of all spatial tip-sample force derivatives in the plane. Finally, we use the NW to image electric force fields distinguishing between forces arising from the NW charge and polarizability. The short wavelengths of soft x-rays promise to reach spatial resolutions in the deep single-digitnanometer regime, providing unprecedented access to magnetic phenomena at fundamental length scales. Despiteconsiderable efforts in soft x-ray microscopy techniques, a two-dimensional resolution of 10 nm has not yet been surpassedin direct imaging. Here, we report on a significant step beyond this long-standing limit by combining newlydeveloped soft x-ray Fresnel zone plate lenses with advanced precision in scanning control and careful optical design.With this approach, we achieve an image resolution of 7 nm. By combining this highly precise microscopy techniquewith the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism effect,we reveal dimensionality effects in an ensemble of interacting magneticnanoparticles. We describe the use of grown nanowires as scanning directional force sensors. Two orthogonal flexural modes are used to demonstrate vectorial sensing of electric and magnetic fields. Furthermore, we show that the modes can be strongly coupled by demonstrating Rabi oscillations. These results open the way to implement coherent control and frequency stabilization in nanomechanical force and mass sensors.

The drive to improve the sensitivity of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to smaller and smaller sample volumes has led to the development of a variety of techniques distinct from conventional inductive detection. In this chapter, we focus on the technique of force-detected NMR as one of the most successful in yielding sensitivity improvements. We review the rationale for the technique, its basic principles, and give a brief history of its most important results. We then cover in greater detail its application in the first demonstration of three-dimensional (3D) nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with nanometer-scale resolution. Next we present recent developments and likely paths for improvement. Finally, the technique and its potential are discussed in the context of competing and complementary technologies.

The reversal of uniform axial magnetization in a ferromagnetic nanotube (FNT) has been predicted to occur through the nucleation and propagation of vortex domains forming at the ends. We provide experimental evidence for this behavior through dynamic cantilever magnetometry measurements of individual FNTs. In particular, we identify the nucleation of the vortex end domains as a function of applied magnetic field and show that they mark the onset of magnetization reversal. We find that the nucleation field depends sensitively on the angle between the end surface of the FNT and the applied field. Micromagnetic simulations substantiate the experimental results and highlight the importance of the ends in determining the reversal process. The control over end-vortex nucleation enabled by our findings is promising for the production of FNTs with tailored reversal properties.

We use a scanning nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference device to map the stray magnetic field produced by individual ferromagnetic nanotubes (FNTs) as a function of applied magnetic field. The images are taken as each FNT is led through magnetic reversal and are compared with micromagnetic simulations, which correspond to specific magnetization configurations. In magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the FNT long axis, their magnetization appears to reverse through vortex states, i.e.\ configurations with vortex end domains or -- in the case of a sufficiently short FNT -- with a single global vortex. Geometrical imperfections in the samples and the resulting distortion of idealized mangetization configurations influence the measured stray-field patterns., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Classically coherent dynamics analogous to those of quantum two-level systems are studied in the setting of force sensing. We demonstrate quantitative control over the coupling between two orthogonal mechanical modes of a nanowire cantilever, through measurement of avoided crossings as we deterministically position the nanowire inside an electric field. Furthermore, we demonstrate Rabi oscillations between the two mechanical modes in the strong coupling regime. We study theoretically the mechanical drive of a trapped ultracold ion by a charged nanowire through their mutual Coulomb interaction. We characterize the perturbation of the trapping potential for the ion by the nanowire and discuss the parameters determining the dynamics of the ion under the action of the nanooscillator. We explore the classical dynamics as well as motional quantum states of the ion which can be generated and manipulated with the resonant drive of the nanowire and the effects of anharmonicities of the ion-trap potential on the system. Our modelling indicates that unusual quantum states of the ion motion can be generated with this approach and that sympathetic cooling and quantum entanglement can be realised when both subsystems operate in the quantum regime. The present ion-mechanical hybrid system might prove interesting as a new quantum device, for quantum sensing experiments, for spectroscopy and for mass spectrometry.

Using dynamic cantilever magnetometry we measure an enhanced skyrmion lattice phase extending from around 29 K down to at least 0.4 K in single MnSi nanowires (NWs). Although recent experiments on two-dimensional thin films show that reduced dimensionality stabilizes the skyrmion phase, our results are surprising given that the NW dimensions are much larger than the skyrmion lattice constant. Furthermore, the stability of the phase depends on the orientation of the NWs with respect to the applied magnetic field, suggesting that an effective magnetic anisotropy, likely due to the large surface-to-volume ratio of these nanostructures, is responsible for the stabilization. The compatibility of our technique with nanometer-scale samples paves the way for future studies on the effect of confinement and surfaces on magnetic skyrmions.

We demonstrate the application of a fiber-coupled quantum-dot-in-a-tip as a probe for scanning electric field microscopy. We map the out-of-plane component of the electric field induced by a pair of electrodes by measurement of the quantum-confined Stark effect induced on a quantum dot spectral line. Our results are in agreement with finite element simulations of the experiment. Furthermore, we present results from analytic calculations and simulations which are relevant to any electric field sensor embedded in a dielectric tip. Coupling a microscopic mechanical resonator to a nanoscale quantum system enables control of the mechanical resonator via the quantum system and vice-versa. The coupling is usually achieved through functionalization of the mechanical resonator, but this results in additional mass and dissipation channels. An alternative is an intrinsic coupling based on strain. Here we employ a monolithic semiconductor system: the nanoscale quantum system is a semiconductor quantum dot (QD) located inside a nanowire. We demonstrate the resonant optical driving of the QD transition in such a structure. The noise spectrum of the resonance fluorescence signal, recorded in the single-photon counting regime, reveals a coupling to mechanical modes of different types. We measure a sensitivity to displacement of 65 fm/\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\sqrt {{\rm{Hz}}} $$\end{document}Hz limited by charge noise in the device. Finally, we use thermal excitation of the different modes to determine the location of the QD within the trumpet, and calculate the contribution of the Brownian motion to the dephasing of the emitter., Resonant driving of a nanoscale quantum system coupled to a microscopic mechanical resonator may have uses in precision sensing and quantum information. The authors realize this by tailoring the geometry of a semiconductor nanowire embedding a quantum dot, detecting sub-picometre displacements.

We image the remnant magnetization configurations of CoFeB and permalloy nanotubes (NTs) using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism photo-emission electron microscopy. The images provide direct evidence for flux-closure configurations, including a global vortex state, in which magnetization points circumferentially around the NT axis. We realize mirror templates on the tips of optical fibers using a single-shot CO$_2$ laser ablation procedure. We perform a systematic study of the influence of the pulse power, pulse duration, and laser spot size on the radius of curvature, depth, and diameter of the mirror templates. We find that these geometrical characteristics can be tuned to a larger extent than has been previously reported, and notably observe that compound convex-concave shapes can be obtained. This detailed investigation should help further the understanding of the physics of CO$_2$ laser ablation processes and help improve current models. We additionally identify regimes of ablation parameters that lead to mirror templates with favorable geometries for use in cavity quantum electrodynamics and optomechanics.

Soon after the first measurements of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in a condensed matter system, Bloch predicted the presence of statistical fluctuations proportional to $1/\sqrt{N}$ in the polarization of an ensemble of $N$ spins. First observed by Sleator et al., so-called "spin noise" has recently emerged as a critical ingredient in nanometer-scale magnetic resonance imaging (nanoMRI). This prominence is a direct result of MRI resolution improving to better than 100 nm^3, a size-scale in which statistical spin fluctuations begin to dominate the polarization dynamics. We demonstrate a technique that creates spin order in nanometer-scale ensembles of nuclear spins by harnessing these fluctuations to produce polarizations both larger and narrower than the natural thermal distribution. We focus on ensembles containing ~10^6 phosphorus and hydrogen spins associated with single InP and GaP nanowires (NWs) and their hydrogen-containing adsorbate layers. We monitor, control, and capture fluctuations in the ensemble's spin polarization in real-time and store them for extended periods. This selective capture of large polarization fluctuations may provide a route for enhancing the weak magnetic signals produced by nanometer-scale volumes of nuclear spins. Improving the quantum coherence of solid-state systems that mimic two-level atoms, for instance spin qubits or single-photon emitters using semiconductor quantum dots, involves dealing with the noise inherent to the device. Charge noise results in a fluctuating electric field, spin noise in a fluctuating magnetic field at the location of the qubit, and both can lead to dephasing and decoherence of optical and spin states. We investigate noise in an ultrapure semiconductor device using a minimally invasive, ultrasensitive local probe: resonance fluorescence from a single quantum dot. We distinguish between charge noise and spin noise through a crucial difference in their optical signatures. Noise spectra for both electric and magnetic fields are derived from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz. The charge noise dominates at low frequencies, spin noise at high frequencies. The noise falls rapidly with increasing frequency, allowing us to demonstrate transform-limited quantum-dot optical linewidths by operating the device above 50 kHz. Charge noise and spin noise lead to decoherence of the state of a quantum dot. A fast spectroscopic technique based on resonance fluorescence can distinguish between these two deleterious effects, enabling a better understanding of how to minimize their influence.

A huge effort is underway to develop semiconductor nanostructures as low-noise qubits. A key source of dephasing for an electron spin qubit in GaAs and in naturally occurring Si is the nuclear spin bath. The electron spin is coupled to each nuclear spin by the hyperfine interaction. The same interaction also couples two remote nuclear spins via a common coupling to the delocalized electron. It has been suggested that this interaction limits both electron and nuclear spin coherence, but experimental proof is lacking. We show that the nuclear spin decoherence time decreases by two orders of magnitude on occupying an empty quantum dot with a single electron, recovering to its original value for two electrons. In the case of one electron, agreement with a model calculation verifies the hypothesis of an electron-mediated nuclear spin-nuclear spin coupling. The results establish a framework to understand the main features of this complex interaction in semiconductor nanostructures.

We demonstrate nonlinear coupling between two orthogonal flexural modes of single as-grown GaAs nanowires. The resonant frequency of one mode can be shifted over many line widths by mechanically driving the other mode. We present time-domain measurements of the mode coupling and characterize it further by pump–probe experiments. Measurements show that a geometric nonlinearity causes the frequency of one mode to depend directly on the square amplitude of the other mode. Nearly degenerate orthogonal modes in nanowires are particularly interesting given their potential use in vectorial force sensing.

We present an exploration of the spectroscopy of a single quantum dot in a photonic wire. The device presents a high photon extraction efficiency, and strong hybrid coupling to mechanical modes. We use resonance fluorescence to probe the emitter's properties with the highest sensitivity, allowing the detection of thermal excitation of the mechanical mode at 4 K.

We investigate single CoFeB nanotubes with hexagonal cross-section using dynamic cantilever magnetometry (DCM). We develop both an analytical model based on the Stoner-Wohlfarth approximation and a broadly applicable numerical framework for analyzing DCM measurements of magnetic nanostructures. Magnetometry data show the presence of a uniformly magnetized configuration at high external fields with $\mu_0 M_s =1.3 \pm 0.1$ T and non-uniform configurations at low fields. In this low-field regime, comparison between numerical simulations and DCM measurements supports the existence of flux-closure configurations. Crucially, evidence of such configurations is only apparent because of the sensitivity of DCM to single nanotubes, whereas conventional measurements of ensembles are often obscured by sample-to-sample inhomogeneities in size, shape, and orientation, Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

We present the experimental realization of a quantum fiber-pigtail. The device consists of a semiconductor quantum-dot embedded into a conical photonic wire that is directly connected to the core of a fiber-pigtail. We demonstrate a photon collection efficiency at the output of the fiber of 5.8% and suggest realistic improvements for the implementation of a useful device in the context of quantum information. We also discuss potential applications in scanning probe microscopy. The approach is generic and transferable to other materials including diamond and silicon.

We have combined ultrasensitive magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) with 3D image reconstruction to achieve magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with resolution 1 H spin density within individual tobacco mosaic virus particles sitting on a nanometer-thick layer of adsorbed hydrocarbons. This result, which represents a 100 million-fold improvement in volume resolution over conventional MRI, demonstrates the potential of MRFM as a tool for 3D, elementally selective imaging on the nanometer scale.

We report on mechanical dissipation measurements carried out on thin (∼100 nm), single-crystal silicon cantilevers with varying chemical surface termination. We find that the 1-2 nm-thick native oxide layer of silicon contributes about 85% to the friction of the mechanical resonance. We show that the mechanical friction is proportional to the thickness of the oxide layer and that it crucially depends on oxide formation conditions. We further demonstrate that chemical surface protection by nitridation, liquid-phase hydrosilylation, or gas-phase hydrosilylation can inhibit rapid oxide formation in air and results in a permanent improvement of the mechanical quality factor between three- and five-fold. This improvement extends to cryogenic temperatures. Presented recipes can be directly integrated with standard cleanroom processes and may be especially beneficial for ultrasensitive nanomechanical force- and mass sensors, including silicon cantilevers, membranes, or nanowires.

As the number of spins in an ensemble is reduced, the statistical fluctuations in its polarization eventually exceed the mean thermal polarization. This transition has now been surpassed in a number of recent nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, which achieve nanometer-scale detection volumes. Here, we measure nanometer-scale ensembles of nuclear spins in a KPF6 sample using magnetic resonance force microscopy. In particular, we investigate the transition between regimes dominated by thermal and statistical nuclear polarization. The ratio between the two types of polarization provides a measure of the number of spins in the detected ensemble.

We discuss hybrid systems in which a mechanical oscillator is coupled to another (microscopic) quantum system, such as trapped atoms or ions, solid-state spin qubits, or superconducting devices. We summarize and compare different coupling schemes and describe first experimental implementations. Hybrid mechanical systems enable new approaches to quantum control of mechanical objects, precision sensing, and quantum information processing.

The nuclear spins in nanostructured semiconductors play a central role in quantum applications. The nuclear spins represent a useful resource for generating local magnetic fields but nuclear spin noise represents a major source of dephasing for spin qubits. Controlling the nuclear spins enhances the resource while suppressing the noise. NMR techniques are challenging: the group III and V isotopes have large spins with widely different gyromagnetic ratios; in strained material there are large atom-dependent quadrupole shifts; and nanoscale NMR is hard to detect. We report NMR on 100,000 nuclear spins of a quantum dot using chirped radiofrequency pulses. Following polarization, we demonstrate a reversal of the nuclear spin. We can flip the nuclear spin back and forth a hundred times.We demonstrate that chirped NMR is a powerful way of determining the chemical composition, the initial nuclear spin temperatures and quadrupole frequency distributions for all the main isotopes. The key observation is a plateau in the NMR signal as a function of sweep rate: we achieve inversion at the first quantum transition for all isotopes simultaneously. These experiments represent a generic technique for manipulating nanoscale inhomogeneous nuclear spin ensembles and open the way to probe the coherence of such mesoscopic systems., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Using dynamic cantilever magnetometry, we study the vortex lattice and its corresponding melting transition in a micrometer-size crystallite of superconducting NbSe2. Measurements of the cantilever resonance frequency as a function of magnetic field and temperature respond to the magnetization of the vortex-lattice. The cantilever dissipation depends on thermally activated vortex creep motion, whose pinning energy barrier is found to be in good agreement with transport measurements on bulk samples. This approach reveals the phase diagram of the crystallite, and is applicable to other micro- or nanometer-scale superconducting samples., 5 pages, 4 figures

We report nonlinear behavior in the motion of driven nanowire cantilevers. The nonlinearity can be described by the Duffing equation and is used to demonstrate mechanical mixing of two distinct excitation frequencies. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the nonlinearity can be used to amplify a signal at a frequency close to the mechanical resonance of the nanowire oscillator. Up to 26 dB of amplitude gain is demonstrated in this way. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.
