Abstract

Four neurosurgery patients in Spain developed Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a fatal brain disease, between 1985 and 1992, after receiving human tissue grafts made by B. Braun Melsungen AG, under the product name of LYODURA. One such case also occurred in the US in 1987. After an investigation, the manufacturer revised its standards in making LYODURA on May 1, 1987 to reduce CJD transmission.
