We present the discovery of Aquarius III, an ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxy identified in the second data release of the DECam Local Volume Exploration (DELVE) survey. Based on deeper follow-up imaging with DECam, we find that Aquarius III is a low-luminosity ($M_V = -2.5^{+0.3}_{-0.5}$; $L_V = 850^{+380}_{-260} \ L_{\odot}$), extended ($r_{1/2} = 41^{+9}_{-8}$ pc) stellar system located in the outer halo ($D_{\odot} = 85 \pm 4$ kpc). From medium-resolution Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy, we identify 11 member stars and measure a mean heliocentric radial velocity of $v_{\rm sys} = -13.1^{+1.0}_{-0.9} \ \rm km \ s^{-1}$ for the system and place an upper limit of $\sigma_v < 3.5 \rm \ km \ s^{-1}$ ($\sigma_v < 1.6 \rm \ km \ s^{-1}$) on its velocity dispersion at the 95% (68%) credible level. Based on Calcium-Triplet-based metallicities of the six brightest red giant members, we find that Aquarius III is very metal-poor ([Fe/H]$ = -2.61 \pm 0.21$) with a statistically-significant metallicity spread ($\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]} = 0.46^{+0.26}_{-0.14}$ dex). We interpret this metallicity spread as strong evidence that the system is a dwarf galaxy as opposed to a star cluster. Combining our velocity measurement with $Gaia$ proper motions, we find that Aquarius III is currently situated near its orbital pericenter in the outer halo ($r_{\rm peri} = 78 \pm 7$ kpc) and that it is plausibly on first infall onto the Milky Way. This orbital history likely precludes significant tidal disruption from the Galactic disk, notably unlike other satellites with comparably low velocity dispersion limits in the literature. Thus, if further velocity measurements confirm that its velocity dispersion is truly below $\sigma_v \lesssim 2 \rm \ km \ s^{-1}$, Aquarius III may serve as a useful laboratory for probing galaxy formation physics in low-mass halos., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures. We report the discovery of three faint and ultra-faint dwarf galaxies -- Sculptor A, Sculptor B and Sculptor C -- in the direction of NGC 300 (D=2.0 Mpc), a Large Magellanic Cloud-mass galaxy. Deep ground-based imaging with Gemini/GMOS resolves all three dwarf galaxies into stars, each displaying a red giant branch indicative of an old, metal-poor stellar population. No young stars or HI gas are apparent, and the lack of a GALEX UV detection suggests that all three systems are quenched. Sculptor C (D=2.04$^{+0.10}_{-0.13}$ Mpc; $M_V$=$-$9.1$\pm$0.1 mag or $L_V$=(3.7$^{+0.4}_{-0.3}$)$\times$10$^5$ $L_{\odot}$) is consistent with being a satellite of NGC 300. Sculptor A (D=1.35$^{+0.22}_{-0.08}$ Mpc; $M_V$=$-$6.9$\pm$0.3 mag or $L_V$=(5$^{+1}_{-1}$)$\times$10$^4$ $L_{\odot}$) is likely in the foreground of NGC 300 and at the extreme edge of the Local Group, analogous to the recently discovered ultra-faint Tucana B in terms of its physical properties and environment. Sculptor B (D=2.48$^{+0.21}_{-0.24}$ Mpc; $M_V$=$-$8.1$\pm$0.3 mag or $L_V$=(1.5$^{+0.5}_{-0.4}$)$\times$10$^5$ $L_{\odot}$) is likely in the background, but future distance measurements are necessary to solidify this statement. It is also of interest due to its quiescent state and low stellar mass. Both Sculptor A and B are $\gtrsim$2-4 $r_{vir}$ from NGC 300 itself. We report the discovery and spectroscopic confirmation of an ultra-faint Milky Way (MW) satellite in the constellation of Leo. This system was discovered as a spatial overdensity of resolved stars observed with Dark Energy Camera (DECam) data from an early version of the third data release of the DECam Local Volume Exploration survey (DELVE EDR3). The low luminosity ($M_V = -3.56_{-0.37}^{+0.47}$; $L_V = 2300_{-800}^{+1000} L_\odot$), large size ($r_{1/2} = 90_{-30}^{+30}$ pc), and large heliocentric distance ($D = 111_{-4}^{+7}$ kpc) are all consistent with the population of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDs). Using Keck/DEIMOS observations of the system, we were able to spectroscopically confirm 11 member stars, while measuring a mass to light ratio of $1000_{-700}^{+1900} M_\odot/L_\odot$ and a non-zero metallicity dispersion of $\sigma_{[\rm Fe/H]}=0.33_{-0.14}^{+0.19}$, further confirming Leo VI's identity as an UFD. While the system has an highly elliptical shape, $\epsilon = 0.54_{-0.29}^{+0.19}$, we do not find any evidence that it is tidally disrupting. Moreover, despite its apparent on-sky proximity to members of the proposed Crater-Leo infall group, its relatively lower heliocentric distance and inconsistent position in energy-angular momentum space with the other group members make it unlikely for it to be part of the proposed infall group., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables; to be submitted to AAS Journals

We report results from a systematic wide-area search for faint dwarf galaxies at heliocentric distances from 0.3 to 2 Mpc using the full six years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES). Unlike previous searches over the DES data, this search specifically targeted a field population of faint galaxies located beyond the Milky Way virial radius. We derive our detection efficiency for faint, resolved dwarf galaxies in the Local Volume with a set of synthetic galaxies and expect our search to be complete to $M_V$ ~ $(-7, -10)$ mag for galaxies at $D = (0.3, 2.0)$ Mpc respectively. We find no new field dwarfs in the DES footprint, but we report the discovery of one high-significance candidate dwarf galaxy at a distance of $2.2\substack{+0.05\\-0.12}$ Mpc, a potential satellite of the Local Volume galaxy NGC 55, separated by $47$ arcmin (physical separation as small as 30 kpc). We estimate this dwarf galaxy to have an absolute V-band magnitude of $-8.0\substack{+0.5\\-0.3}$ mag and an azimuthally averaged physical half-light radius of $2.2\substack{+0.5\\-0.4}$ kpc, making this one of the lowest surface brightness galaxies ever found with $\mu = 32.3$ mag ${\rm arcsec}^{-2}$. This is the largest, most diffuse galaxy known at this luminosity, suggesting possible tidal interactions with its host., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

We report the discovery of six ultra-faint Milky Way satellites discovered through matched-filter searches conducted using Dark Energy Camera (DECam) data processed as part of the second data release of the DECam Local Volume Exploration (DELVE) survey. Leveraging deep Gemini/GMOS-N imaging (for four candidates) as well as follow-up DECam imaging (for two candidates), we characterize the morphologies and stellar populations of these systems. We find that these candidates all share faint absolute magnitudes ($M_{V} \geq -3.2$ mag) and old, metal-poor stellar populations ($\tau > 10$ Gyr, [Fe/H] $< -1.4$ dex). Three of these systems are more extended ($r_{1/2} > 15$ pc), while the other three are compact ($r_{1/2} < 10$ pc). From these properties, we infer that the former three systems (Bo\"{o}tes V, Leo Minor I, and Virgo II) are consistent with ultra-faint dwarf galaxy classifications, whereas the latter three (DELVE 3, DELVE 4, and DELVE 5) are likely ultra-faint star clusters. Using data from the Gaia satellite, we confidently measure the proper motion of Bo\"{o}tes V, Leo Minor I, and DELVE 4, and tentatively detect a proper motion signal from DELVE 3 and DELVE 5; no signal is detected for Virgo II. We use these measurements to explore possible associations between the newly-discovered systems and the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal, the Magellanic Clouds, and the Vast Polar Structure, finding several plausible associations. Our results offer a preview of the numerous ultra-faint stellar systems that will soon be discovered by the Vera C. We present the second public data release (DR2) from the DECam Local Volume Exploration survey (DELVE). DELVE DR2 combines new DECam observations with archival DECam data from the Dark Energy Survey, the DECam Legacy Survey, and other DECam community programs. DELVE DR2 consists of ~160,000 exposures that cover >21,000 deg^2 of the high Galactic latitude (|b| > 10 deg) sky in four broadband optical/near-infrared filters (g, r, i, z). DELVE DR2 provides point-source and automatic aperture photometry for ~2.5 billion astronomical sources with a median 5{\sigma} point-source depth of g=24.3, r=23.9, i=23.5, and z=22.8 mag. A region of ~17,000 deg^2 has been imaged in all four filters, providing four-band photometric measurements for ~618 million astronomical sources. DELVE DR2 covers more than four times the area of the previous DELVE data release and contains roughly five times as many astronomical objects. We report the discovery of Pegasus IV, an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy found in archival data from the Dark Energy Camera processed by the DECam Local Volume Exploration Survey. Pegasus IV is a compact, ultra-faint stellar system ($r_{1/2} = 41^{+8}_{-6}$ pc; $M_V = -4.25 \pm 0.2$ mag) located at a heliocentric distance of $90^{+4}_{-6}$ kpc. Based on spectra of seven non-variable member stars observed with Magellan/IMACS, we confidently resolve Pegasus IV's velocity dispersion, measuring $\sigma_{v} = 3.3^{+1.7}_{-1.1} \text{ km s}^{-1}$ (after excluding three velocity outliers); this implies a mass-to-light ratio of $M_{1/2}/L_{V,1/2} = 167^{+224}_{-99} M_{\odot}/L_{\odot}$ for the system. From the five stars with the highest signal-to-noise spectra, we also measure a systemic metallicity of $\rm [Fe/H] = -2.67^{+0.25}_{-0.29}$ dex, making Pegasus IV one of the most metal-poor ultra-faint dwarfs. We tentatively resolve a non-zero metallicity dispersion for the system. These measurements provide strong evidence that Pegasus IV is a dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy, rather than a star cluster. We measure Pegasus IV's proper motion using data from Gaia Early Data Release 3, finding ($\mu_{\alpha*}, \mu_{\delta}) = (0.33\pm 0.07, -0.21 \pm 0.08) \text{ mas yr}^{-1}$. When combined with our measured systemic velocity, this proper motion suggests that Pegasus IV is on an elliptical, retrograde orbit, and is currently near its orbital apocenter. Lastly, we identify three potential RR Lyrae variable stars within Pegasus IV, including one candidate member located more than ten half-light radii away from the system's centroid. The discovery of yet another ultra-faint dwarf galaxy strongly suggests that the census of Milky Way satellites is still incomplete, even within 100 kpc., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures + 2 page Appendix; submitting to AAS journals

While Euclid is an ESA mission specifically designed to investigate the nature of Dark Energy and Dark Matter, the planned unprecedented combination of survey area ($\sim15\,000$ deg$^2$), spatial resolution, low sky-background, and depth also make Euclid an excellent space observatory for the study of the low surface brightness Universe. Scientific exploitation of the extended low surface brightness structures requires dedicated calibration procedures yet to be tested. We investigate the capabilities of Euclid to detect extended low surface brightness structure by identifying and quantifying sky background sources and stray-light contamination. We test the feasibility of generating sky flat-fields to reduce large-scale residual gradients in order to reveal the extended emission of galaxies observed in the Euclid Survey. We simulate a realistic set of Euclid/VIS observations, taking into account both instrumental and astronomical sources of contamination, including cosmic rays, stray-light, zodiacal light, ISM, and the CIB, while simulating the effects of the presence of background sources in the FOV. We demonstrate that a combination of calibration lamps, sky flats and self-calibration would enable recovery of emission at a limiting surface brightness magnitude of $\mu=29.5^{+0.08}_{-0.27} $ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ ($3\sigma$, $10\times10$ arcsec$^2$) in the Wide Survey, reaching regions 2 magnitudes deeper in the Deep Surveys. Euclid/VIS has the potential to be an excellent low surface brightness observatory. Covering the gap between pixel-to-pixel calibration lamp flats and self-calibration observations for large scales, the application of sky flat-fielding will enhance the sensitivity of the VIS detector at scales of larger than 1 degree, up to the size of the FOV, enabling Euclid to detect extended surface brightness structures below $\mu=31$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and beyond., Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, Euclid Consortium Key Project, accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the discovery of a candidate ultra-faint Milky Way satellite, Eridanus IV (DELVE J0505$-$0931), detected in photometric data from the DECam Local Volume Exploration survey (DELVE). Eridanus IV is a faint ($M_V = -4.7 \pm 0.2$), extended ($r_{1/2} = 75^{+16}_{-13}$ pc), and elliptical ($\epsilon = 0.54 \pm 0.1$) system at a heliocentric distance of $76.7^{+4.0}_{-6.1}$ kpc, with a stellar population that is well-described by an old, metal-poor isochrone (age of $\tau \sim 13.0$ Gyr and metallicity of ${\rm [Fe/H] \lesssim -2.1}$ dex). These properties are consistent with the known population of ultra-faint Milky Way satellite galaxies. Eridanus IV is also prominently detected using proper motion measurements from Gaia Early Data Release 3, with a systemic proper motion of $(\mu_{\alpha} \cos \delta, \mu_{\delta}) = (+0.25 \pm 0.06, -0.10 \pm 0.05)$ mas yr$^{-1}$ measured from its horizontal branch and red giant branch member stars. We report the detection of three RR Lyrae (RRL) stars (two RRc and one RRab) in the ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy Centaurus I (CenI) and two Milky Way (MW) $\delta$ Scuti/SX Phoenicis stars based on multi-epoch $giz$ DECam observations. The two RRc stars are located within 2 times the half-light radius (r$_h$) of Cen I, while the RRab star (CenI-V3) is at $\sim6$ r$_h$. The presence of three distant RRL stars clustered this tightly in space represents a 4.7$\sigma$ excess relative to the smooth distribution of RRL in the Galactic halo. Using the newly detected RRL stars, we obtain a distance modulus to Cen I of $\mu_0 = 20.354 \pm 0.002$ mag ($\sigma=0.03$ mag), a heliocentric distance of D$_\odot = 117.7 \pm 0.1$ kpc ($\sigma=1.6$ kpc), with systematic errors of $0.07$ mag and $4$ kpc. The location of the Cen I RRL stars in the Bailey diagram is in agreement with other UFD galaxies (mainly Oosterhoff II). Finally, we study the relative rate of RRc+RRd (RRcd) stars ($f_{cd}$) in UFD and classical dwarf galaxies. The full sample of MW dwarf galaxies gives a mean of $f_{cd} = 0.28$. While several UFD galaxies, such as Cen I, present higher RRcd ratios, if we combine the RRL populations of all UFD galaxies, the RRcd ratio is similar to the one obtained for the classical dwarfs ($f_{cd}$ $\sim$ 0.3). The DECam Local Volume Exploration survey (DELVE) is a 126-night survey program on the 4-m Blanco Telescope at the Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. DELVE seeks to understand the characteristics of faint satellite galaxies and other resolved stellar substructures over a range of environments in the Local Volume. DELVE will combine new DECam observations with archival DECam data to cover ~15000 deg$^2$ of high-Galactic-latitude (|b| > 10 deg) southern sky to a 5$\sigma$ depth of g,r,i,z ~ 23.5 mag. In addition, DELVE will cover a region of ~2200 deg$^2$ around the Magellanic Clouds to a depth of g,r,i ~ 24.5 mag and an area of ~135 deg$^2$ around four Magellanic analogs to a depth of g,i ~ 25.5 mag. Here, we present an overview of the DELVE program and progress to date. We also summarize the first DELVE public data release (DELVE DR1), which provides point-source and automatic aperture photometry for ~520 million astronomical sources covering ~5000 deg$^2$ of the southern sky to a 5$\sigma$ point-source depth of g=24.3, r=23.9, i=23.3, and z=22.8 mag. We report the discovery of a new ultra-faint stellar system found near the Magellanic Clouds in the DECam Local Volume Exploration (DELVE) Survey. This new system, DELVE J0155$-$6815 (DELVE 2), is located at a heliocentric distance of $D_{\odot} = 71 \pm 4\text{ kpc}$, which places it at a 3D physical separation of 12 kpc from the center of Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) and 28 kpc from the center of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). DELVE 2 is identified as a resolved overdensity of old ($\tau > 13.3\text{ Gyr}$) and metal-poor (${\rm [Fe/H]} = -2.0_{-0.5}^{+0.2}$ dex) stars with a projected half-light radius of $r_{1/2} = 21^{+4}_{-3}\text{ pc}$ and an absolute magnitude of $M_V = -2.1^{+0.4}_{-0.5}\text{ mag}$. The size and luminosity of DELVE 2 are consistent with both the population of recently discovered ultra-faint globular clusters and the smallest ultra-faint dwarf galaxies. However, its age and metallicity would place it among the oldest and most metal-poor globular clusters in the Magellanic system. DELVE 2 is detected in Gaia DR2 with a clear proper motion signal, with multiple blue horizontal branch stars near the centroid of the system with proper motions consistent with the systemic mean. We measure the system proper motion to be $(\mu_{\alpha} \cos \delta, \mu_{\delta})= (1.02_{-0.25}^{+0.24}, -0.85_{-0.19}^{+0.18})$ mas yr$^{-1}$. We compare the spatial position and proper motion of DELVE 2 with simulations of the accreted satellite population of the LMC and find that it is very likely to be associated with the LMC., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, submitted to AAS journals

The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will soon start to scan thousands of square degrees of the northern extragalactic sky with a unique set of $56$ optical filters from a dedicated $2.55$m telescope, JST, at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Before the arrival of the final instrument (a 1.2 Gpixels, 4.2deg$^2$ field-of-view camera), the JST was equipped with an interim camera (JPAS-Pathfinder), composed of one CCD with a 0.3deg$^2$ field-of-view and resolution of 0.23 arcsec pixel$^{-1}$. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, with the JPAS-Pathfinder camera we carried out a survey on the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip), dubbed miniJPAS. We observed a total of $\sim 1$ deg$^2$, with the $56$ J-PAS filters, which include $54$ narrow band (NB, $\rm{FWHM} \sim 145$Angstrom) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the $u,g,r,i$ SDSS broad band (BB) filters. In this paper we present the miniJPAS data set, the details of the catalogues and data access, and illustrate the scientific potential of our multi-band data. The data surpass the target depths originally planned for J-PAS, reaching $\rm{mag}_{\rm {AB}}$ between $\sim 22$ and $23.5$ for the NB filters and up to $24$ for the BB filters ($5\sigma$ in a $3$~arcsec aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalogue contains more than $64,000$ sources extracted in the $r$ detection band with forced photometry in all other bands. We estimate the catalogue to be complete up to $r=23.6$ for point-like sources and up to $r=22.7$ for extended sources. Photometric redshifts reach subpercent precision for all sources up to $r=22.5$, and a precision of $\sim 0.3$% for about half of the sample. We present here the Calar Alto Schmidt-Lemaitre Telescope (CASTLE) concept, a technology demonstrator for curved detectors, that will be installed at the Calar Alto Observatory (Spain). This telescope has a wide field of view (2.36x1.56 deg^2) and a design, optimised to generate a Point Spread Function with very low level wings and reduced ghost features, which makes it considerably less susceptible to several systematic effects usually affecting similar systems. These characteristics are particularly suited to study the low surface brightness Universe. CASTLE will be able to reach surface brightness orders of magnitude fainter than the sky background level and observe the extremely extended and faint features around galaxies such as tidal features, stellar halos, intra-cluster light, etc. CASTLE will also be used to search and detect astrophysical transients such as gamma ray bursts (GRB), gravitational wave optical counterparts, neutrino counterparts, etc. This will increase the number of precisely localized GRBs from 20% to 60% (in the case of Fermi/GMB GRBs)., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is the closest and most studied example of an irregular galaxy. Among its principal defining morphological features, its off-centred bar and single spiral arm stand out, defining a whole family of galaxies known as the Magellanic spirals (Sm). These structures are thought to be triggered by tidal interactions and possibly maintained via gas accretion. However, it is still unknown whether they are long-lived stable structures. In this work, by combining photometry that reaches down to the oldest main sequence turn-off in the colour-magnitude diagrams (CMD, up to a distance of $\sim$4.4 kpc from the LMC centre) from the SMASH survey and CMD fitting techniques, we find compelling evidence supporting the long-term stability of the LMC spiral arm, dating the origin of this structure to more than 2~Gyr ago. The evidence suggests that the close encounter between the LMC and the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) that produced the gaseous Magellanic Stream and its Leading Arm (LA) also triggered the formation of the LMC's spiral arm. Given the mass difference between the Clouds and the notable consequences of this interaction, we can speculate that this should have been one of their closest encounters. We report the results of a systematic photometric survey of the peripheral regions of a sample of fourteen globular clusters in the outer halo of the Milky Way at distances d_GC>25 kpc from the Galactic centre. The survey is aimed at searching for the remnants of the host satellite galaxies where these clusters could originally have been formed before being accreted onto the Galactic halo. The limiting surface brightness varies within our sample, but reaches muV_lim=30-32 mag arcsec^-2. For only two globular clusters (NGC 7492 and Whiting 1; already suggested to be associated with the Sagittarius galaxy) we detect extended stellar populations that cannot be associated with either the clusters themselves or with the surrounding Galactic field population. We show that the lack of substructures around globular clusters at these Galactocentric distances is still compatible with the predictions of cosmological simulations whereby in the outer halo the Galactic globular cluster system is built up through hierarchical accretion at early epochs., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication by MNRAS

We present Magellan/IMACS, Anglo-Australian Telescope/AAOmega+2dF, and Very Large Telescope/GIRAFFE+FLAMES spectroscopy of the CarinaII (Car II) & Carina III (Car III) dwarf galaxy candidates, recently discovered in the Magellanic Satellites Survey (MagLiteS). We identify 18 member stars in Car II, including 2 binaries with variable radial velocities and 2 RR Lyrae stars. The other 14 members have a mean heliocentric velocity $v_{\rm hel} = 477.2 \pm 1.2$ km/s and a velocity dispersion of $\sigma_v = 3.4^{+1.2}_{-0.8}$ km/s. Assuming Car II is in dynamical equilibrium, we derive a total mass within the half-light radius of $1.0^{+0.8}_{-0.4} \times 10^{6} M_\odot$, indicating a mass-to-light ratio of $369^{+309}_{-161} M_\odot/L_\odot$. From equivalent width measurements of the calcium triplet lines of 9 RGB stars, we derive a mean metallicity of [Fe/H] = $-2.44 \pm 0.09$ with dispersion $\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]} = 0.22 ^{+0.10}_{-0.07}$. Considering both the kinematic and chemical properties, we conclude that Car II is a dark-matter-dominated dwarf galaxy. For Car III, we identify 4 member stars, from which we calculate a systemic velocity of $v_{\rm hel} = 284.6^{+3.4}_{-3.1}$ km/s. The brightest RGB member of Car III has a metallicity of [Fe/H] $= -1.97 \pm 0.12$. Due to the small size of the Car III spectroscopic sample, we cannot conclusively determine its nature. Although these two systems have the smallest known physical separation ($\Delta d\sim10~kpc$) among Local Group satellites, the large difference in their systemic velocities, $\sim200$ km/s, indicates that they are unlikely to be a bound pair. One or both systems are likely associated with the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), and may remain LMC satellites today. No statistically significant excess of $\gamma$-rays emission is found at the locations of Car II and Car III in eight years of Fermi-LAT data., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. Submitted to ApJ

We report the discovery of two ultra-faint satellites in the vicinity of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in data from the Magellanic Satellites Survey (MagLiteS). Situated 18$^{\circ}$ ($\sim 20$ kpc) from the LMC and separated from each other by only $18^\prime$, Carina~II and III form an intriguing pair. By simultaneously modeling the spatial and the color-magnitude stellar distributions, we find that both Carina~II and Carina~III are likely dwarf galaxies, although this is less clear for Carina~III. There are in fact several obvious differences between the two satellites. While both are well described by an old and metal poor population, Carina~II is located at $\sim 36$ kpc from the Sun, with $M_V\sim-4.5$ and $r_h\sim 90$ pc, and it is further confirmed by the discovery of 3 RR Lyrae at the right distance. In contrast, Carina~III is much more elongated, measured to be fainter ($M_V\sim-2.4$), significantly more compact ($r_h\sim30$ pc), and closer to the Sun, at $\sim 28$ kpc, placing it only 8 kpc away from Car~II. Together with several other systems detected by the Dark Energy Camera, Carina~II and III form a strongly anisotropic cloud of satellites in the vicinity of the Magellanic Clouds., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. The connection between the bulge mass or bulge luminosity in disk galaxies and the number, spatial and phase space distribution of associated dwarf galaxies is a discriminator between cosmological simulations related to galaxy formation in cold dark matter and generalized gravity models. Here, a nearby sample of isolated Milky Way class edge-on galaxies is introduced, to facilitate observational campaigns to detect the associated families of dwarf galaxies at low surface brightness. Three galaxy pairs with at least one of the targets being edge-on are also introduced. About 60% of the catalogued isolated galaxies contain bulges of different size, while the remaining objects appear to be bulge-less. Deep images of NGC 3669 (small bulge, with NGC 3625 at the edge of the image) and NGC 7814 (prominent bulge), obtained with a 0.4-m aperture, are also presented, resulting in the discovery of two new dwarf galaxy candidates, NGC3669-DGSAT-3 and NGC7814-DGSAT-7. Eleven additional low surface brightness galaxies are identified, previously notified with low quality measurement flags in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Integrated magnitudes, surface brightnesses, effective radii, Sersic indices, axis ratios, and projected distances to their putative major hosts are displayed. At least one of the galaxies, NGC3625-DGSAT-4, belongs with a surface brightness of approximately 26 mag per arcsec^2 and effective radius >1.5 kpc to the class of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). We report the discovery of a stellar over-density 8$^{\circ}$ north of the center of the Small Magellanic Cloud (Small Magellanic Cloud Northern Over-Density; SMCNOD) using data from the first two years of the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and the first year of the MAGellanic SatelLITEs Survey (MagLiteS). The SMCNOD is indistinguishable in age, metallicity and distance from the nearby SMC stars, being primarly composed of intermediate-age stars (6 Gyr, Z=0.001), with a small fraction of young stars (1 Gyr, Z=0.01). The SMCNOD has an elongated shape with an ellipticity of 0.6 and a size of $\sim$ 6x2 deg. It has an absolute magnitude of $M_V \cong$ -7.7, $r_h = 2.1$ kpc, and $\mu_V(r

We report the discovery of NGC 253-dw2, a dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy candidate undergoing tidal disruption around a nearby spiral galaxy, NGC 253 in the Sculptor group: the first such event identified beyond the Local Group. The dwarf was found using small-aperture amateur telescopes, and followed up with Suprime-Cam on the 8 m Subaru Telescope in order to resolve its brightest stars. Using g- and R_c-band photometry, we detect a red giant branch consistent with an old, metal-poor stellar population at a distance of ~ 3.5 Mpc. From the distribution of likely member stars, we infer a highly elongated shape with a semi-major axis half-light radius of (2 +/- 0.4) kpc. Star counts also yield a luminosity estimate of ~ 2x10^6 L_Sun,V (M_V ~ -10.7). The morphological properties of NGC 253-dw2 mark it as distinct from normal dSphs and imply ongoing disruption at a projected distance of ~ 50 kpc from the main galaxy. Our observations support the hierarchical paradigm wherein massive galaxies continously accrete less massive ones, and provide a new case study for dSph infall and dissolution dynamics. Context: We introduce the Dwarf Galaxy Survey with Amateur Telescopes (DGSAT) project and report the discovery of eleven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies in the fields of the nearby galaxies NGC 2683, NGC 3628, NGC 4594 (M104), NGC 4631, NGC 5457 (M101), and NGC 7814. Aims: The DGSAT project aims to use the potential of small-sized telescopes to probe LSB features around large galaxies and to increase the sample size of the dwarf satellite galaxies in the Local Volume. Methods: Using long exposure images, fields of the target spiral galaxies are explored for extended low surface brightness objects. After identifying dwarf galaxy candidates, their observed properties are extracted by fitting models to their light profiles. Results: We find three, one, three, one, one, and two new LSB galaxies in the fields of NGC 2683, 3628, 4594, 4631, 5457, and 7814, respectively. In addition to the newly found galaxies, we analyse the structural properties of nine already known galaxies. All of these 20 dwarf galaxy candidates have effective surface brightnesses in the range $25.3\lesssim\mu_{e}\lesssim28.8$ mag.arcsec$^{-2}$ and are fit with Sersic profiles with indices $n\lesssim 1$. Assuming that they are in the vicinity of the above mentioned massive galaxies, their $r$-band absolute magnitudes, their effective radii, and their luminosities are in the ranges $-15.6 \lesssim M_r \lesssim -7.8$, 160 pc $\lesssim R_e \lesssim$ 4.1 kpc, and $0.1\times 10^6 \lesssim\left(\frac{L}{L_{\odot}}\right)_r\lesssim127 \times 10^6$, respectively. To determine whether these LSB galaxies are indeed satellites of the above mentioned massive galaxies, their distances need to be determined via further observations. Conclusions: Using small telescopes, we are readily able to detect LSB galaxies with similar properties to the known dwarf galaxies of the Local Group., Comment: Matches the version published in Astronomy & Astrophysics. (abridged) We present a dynamical analysis of the extended stellar stream encircling NGC 1097. Within a statistical framework, we model its surface brightness using mock streams as in Amorisco (2015) and deep imaging data from the CHART32 telescope (Stellar Tidal Stream Survey). We reconstruct the post-infall evolution of the progenitor, which has experienced 3 pericentric passages and lost more than 2 orders of magnitude in mass. At infall, $5.4\pm0.6$ Gyr ago, the progenitor was a disky dwarf with mass of $\log_{10}[m(<3.4\pm1 {\rm kpc})/ M_\odot]=10.35\pm0.25$. We illustrate how the 90$^\circ$ turn in the stream, identifying the `dog leg', is the signature of the progenitor's prograde rotation. Today, the remnant is a nucleated dwarf, with a LOS velocity of $v_{\rm p, los}^{\rm obs}=-30\pm 30$ kms$^{-1}$, and a luminosity of $3.3\times 10^7 L_{V,\odot}$ (Galianni et al. 2010). Our independent analysis predicts $v_{\rm p, los}=-51^{-17}_{+14}$ kms$^{-1}$, and measures $\log_{10}(m/ M_\odot)=7.4^{+0.6}_{-0.8}$, so that the compact nucleus is soon becoming a low-luminosity UCD. We find that NGC 1097 has a mass of $M_{200}=1.8^{+0.5}_{-0.4} \times 10^{12}\; M_{\odot}$, and its concentration $c_{200}=6.7^{+2.4}_{-1.3}$ is in agreement with LCDM. The stream is described almost down to the noise in a spherical host potential, we find this would not be possible if the halo was substantially triaxial at large radii. Its morphology shows that the slope of the total density profile bends from an inner $\gamma(r_{\rm peri})=1.5\pm0.15$. The progenitor's orbit reaches $r_{\rm apo}=150\pm 15$ kpc, more than a half of the virial radius of the host, so that, for the first time on an individual extragalactic halo, we measure the outer density slope, $\gamma(0.6r_{200,c})=3.9\pm0.5$. This demonstrates the promise of the newborn field of detailed, statistical modelling of extragalactic tidal streams., Comment: submitted, comments welcome

The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerated Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) is a narrow band, very wide field Cosmological Survey to be carried out from the Javalambre Observatory in Spain with a purpose-built, dedicated 2.5m telescope and a 4.7 sq.deg. camera with 1.2Gpix. Starting in late 2015, J-PAS will observe 8500sq.deg. of Northern Sky and measure $0.003(1+z)$ photo-z for $9\times10^7$ LRG and ELG galaxies plus several million QSOs, sampling an effective volume of $\sim 14$ Gpc$^3$ up to $z=1.3$ and becoming the first radial BAO experiment to reach Stage IV. J-PAS will detect $7\times 10^5$ galaxy clusters and groups, setting constrains on Dark Energy which rival those obtained from its BAO measurements. Thanks to the superb characteristics of the site (seeing ~0.7 arcsec), J-PAS is expected to obtain a deep, sub-arcsec image of the Northern sky, which combined with its unique photo-z precision will produce one of the most powerful cosmological lensing surveys before the arrival of Euclid. J-PAS unprecedented spectral time domain information will enable a self-contained SN survey that, without the need for external spectroscopic follow-up, will detect, classify and measure $\sigma_z\sim 0.5\%$ redshifts for $\sim 4000$ SNeIa and $\sim 900$ core-collapse SNe. The key to the J-PAS potential is its innovative approach: a contiguous system of 54 filters with $145\AA$ width, placed $100\AA$ apart over a multi-degree FoV is a powerful "redshift machine", with the survey speed of a 4000 multiplexing low resolution spectrograph, but many times cheaper and much faster to build. The J-PAS camera is equivalent to a 4.7 sq.deg. "IFU" and it will produce a time-resolved, 3D image of the Northern Sky with a very wide range of Astrophysical applications in Galaxy Evolution, the nearby Universe and the study of resolved stellar populations., Comment: 215 pages, 70 figures. The chemo-dynamics of galaxy halos beyond the Local Group may now be mapped out through the use of globular clusters and planetary nebulae as bright tracer objects, along with deep multi-slit spectroscopy of the integrated stellar light. We present results from surveying nearby early-type galaxies, including evidence for kinematically distinct halos that may reflect two-phase galaxy assembly. We have developed a method to identify planetary nebula (PN) candidates in imaging data of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This method exploits the SDSS' five-band sampling of emission lines in PN spectra, which results in a color signature distinct from that of other sources. Selection criteria based on this signature can be applied to nearby galaxies in which PNe appear as point sources. We applied these criteria to the whole area of M31 as scanned by the SDSS, selecting 167 PN candidates that are located in the outer regions of M31. The spectra of 80 selected candidates were then observed with the 2.2m telescope at Calar Alto Observatory. These observations and cross-checks with literature data show that our method has a selection rate efficiency of about 90%, but the efficiency is different for the different groups of PNe candidates. In the outer regions of M31, PNe trace different well-known morphological features like the Northern Spur, the NGC205 Loop, the G1 Clump, etc. In general, the distribution of PNe in the outer region 8

We present the results of a spectroscopic survey performed in the outskirts of the globular cluster NGC1851 with VIMOS@VLT. The radial velocities of 107 stars in a region between 12' and 33' around the cluster have been derived. We clearly identify the cluster stellar population over the entire field of view, indicating the presence of a significant fraction of stars outside the tidal radius predicted by King models. We also find tentative evidence of a cold (sigma_v< 20 km/s) peak in the distribution of velocities at v_r~180 km/s constituted mainly by Main Sequence stars whose location in the color-magnitude diagram is compatible with a stream at a similar distance of this cluster. We present the results of deep imaging obtained at the CFHT with MegaCam in the Anticenter direction at two different heights above the Galactic disk. We detect the presence of the Monoceros ring in both fields as a conspicuous and narrow Main Sequence feature which dominates star counts over a large portion of the color-magnitude diagram down to g'~24. The comparison of the morphology and density of this feature with a large variety of Galactic models excludes the possibility that it can be due to a flare of the Galactic disk, supporting an extra-Galactic origin for this ring-like structure., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication by ApJL

We report the detection of a pair of degree-long tidal tails associated with the globular cluster Palomar 14, using images obtained at the CFHT. We reveal a power-law departure from a King profile at large distances to the cluster center. The density map constructed with the optimal matched filter technique shows a nearly symmetrical and elongated distribution of stars on both sides of the cluster, forming a S-shape characteristic of mass loss. This evidence may be the telltale signature of tidal stripping in action. This, together with its large Galactocentric distance, imposes strong constraints on its orbit and/or origin: i) it must follow an external orbit confined to the peripheral region of the Galactic halo and/or ii) it formed in a satellite galaxy later accreted by the Milky Way., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication by ApJ

Context: The optical ring like structure detected by Arp (1965) around M81 (commonly referenced as "Arp's loop") represents one of the most spectacular feature observed in nearby galaxies. Arp's loop is commonly interpreted as a tail resulting from the tidal interaction between M81 and M82. However, since its discovery the nature of this feature has remained controversial. Aims: Our primary purpose was to identify the sources of optical and infrared emission observed in Arp's loop. Methods: The morphology of the Arp's loop has been investigated with deep wide-field optical images. We also measured its colors using IRAS and Spitzer-MIPS infrared images and compared them with those of the disk of M81 and Galactic dust cirrus that fills the area where M81 is located. Results: Optical images reveal that this peculiar object has a filamentary structure characterized by many dust features overlapping M81's field. The ratios of far-infrared fluxes and the estimated dust-to-gas ratios indicate the infrared emission of Arp's loop is dominated by the contribution of cold dust that is most likely from Galactic cirrus. Conclusions: The above results suggest that the light observed at optical wavelengths is a combination of emission from i) a few recent star forming regions located close to M81, where both bright UV complexes and peaks in the HI distribution are found, ii) the extended disk of M81 and iii) scattered light from the same Galactic cirrus that is responsible for the bulk of the far infrared emission., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication by A&A

We present the star formation history (SFH) and its variations with galactocentric distance for the Local Group dwarf galaxy of Phoenix. Color-magnitude diagram was obtained from WFPC2@HST reaching the oldest main sequence turnoffs. The IAC-star and IAC-pop codes and the MinnIAC suite have been used to obtain the star formation rate as a function of time, metallicity, and radius. We find that Phoenix has had ongoing but gradually decreasing star formation over nearly a Hubble time. The highest level of star formation occurred from the formation of the galaxy till 10.5 Gyr ago, when 50% of the total star formation had already taken place. From that moment, star formation continues at a significant level until 6 Gyr ago, and at a very low level till the present time. The chemical enrichment law shows a trend of slowly increasing metallicity as a function of time till 8--6 Gyr ago, when Z starts to increase steeply to the current value. Young stars are found in the inner region of the galaxy only, but intermediate-age and old stars can be found at all galactocentric distances. This study shows that star formation started at all galactocentric distances in Phoenix at an early epoch. Our results are compatible with a scenario in which the star formation region envelope slowly shrinks as time goes on, possibly as a natural result of pressure support reduction as gas supply diminishes. As a consequence, star formation stopped first in outer regions and the scale-length of the stellar mass density distribution decreased with time. No traces of a true, old halo are apparent in Phoenix either in its stellar age distribution or in the stellar mass density distribution, at least out to 0.5 kpc (about 2.5 scale-lengths) from the center., Comment: 35 pages, 18 figures. In this work, we present a multi-wavelength study of XRF 040912, aimed at measuring its distance scale and the intrinsic burst properties. We performed a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of both the prompt and the afterglow emission and we estimated the distance scale of the likely host galaxy. We then used the currently available sample of XRFs with known distance to discuss the connection between XRFs and classical Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs). We found that the prompt emission properties unambiguously identify this burst as an XRF, with an observed peak energy of E_p=17+/-13 keV and a burst fluence ratio S(2-30keV)/S(30-400keV)>1. A non-fading optical source with R~24 mag and with an apparently extended morphology is spatially consistent with the X-ray afterglow, likely the host galaxy. XRF 040912 is a very dark burst since no afterglow optical counterpart is detected down to R>25 mag (3 sigma limiting magnitude) at 13.6 hours after the burst. The host galaxy spectrum detected from 3800A to 10000A, shows a single emission line at 9552A. The lack of any other strong emission lines blue-ward of the detected one and the absence of the Ly alpha cut-off down to 3800A are consistent with the hypothesis of the [OII] line at redshift z=1.563+/-0.001. The intrinsic spectral properties rank this XRF among the soft GRBs in the E_peak-E_iso diagram. Similar results were obtained for most XRFs at known redshift. Only XRF 060218 and XRF 020903 represent a good example of instrinsic XRF(i-XRF) and are possibly associated with a different progenitor population. [Abridged] We present first results from a large-area (~80degx20deg), sparsely sampled two-filter (B,R) imaging survey towards the Canis Major stellar over-density, claimed to be a disrupting Milky Way satellite galaxy. Utilizing stellar colour-magnitude diagrams reaching to B ~ 22 mag, we provide a first delineation of its surface density distribution using main sequence stars. Its projected shape is highly elongated, nearly parallel to the Galactic plane, with an axis ratio of >~ 5:1, substantially more so than what Martin et al. originally found. We also provide a first map of a prominent over-density of blue, presumably younger main sequence stars, which appears to have a maximum near [l,b = 240,-7 deg]. The young population is markedly more localized. We estimate an upper limit on the line-of-sight (l.o.s.) depth of the old population based on the main sequence width, obtaining sigma_los < 1.8 +/- 0.3 kpc, at an adopted D_helio = 7.5 +/- 1 kpc. For the young stellar population, we find sigma_los < 1.5 kpc. There are different explanations for the CMa over-density: (a) a partially disrupting dwarf galaxy on a low-latitude orbit, (b) a projection of the warped outer Galactic disk, and (c) a projection of an out-of-plane spiral arm. While the data provide no firm arguments against the less well-defined third scenario, they have clear implications for each of the others: (a) We infer from the strong elongation in longitude, and simulations in the literature, that the over-density is unlikely to be a gravitationally bound system at the present epoch, but may well be just a recently disrupted satellite remnant. (b) Based on modeling, the line-of-sight depth of the over-density in old stars is clearly inconsistent with published locally axi-symmetric descriptions of the warped Galactic disk., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, Submitted to AJ. [Abridged] We present a first detailed analysis of resolved stellar populations in the dwarf galaxies NGC 185 and NGC 205 based on archival V- and I-band WFPC2 pointings. For NGC 185 we deduce that star formation was probably still active about 4 x 10^8 yr ago. Key abundance-related results are: (1) We identify ancient stars with [Fe/H] <~ -1.5 dex by a well-defined horizontal branch (HB). (2) We find a prominent RGB/ faint-AGB clump/ bump- like feature with the same mean V-band magnitude as the HB, within uncertainties; from a comparison with theory, ancient stars have [Fe/H] ~ -1.5 dex, with a higher abundance level for intermediate-age stars. (3) From colour information we infer that the median [Fe/H] > -1.11 +/- 0.08 dex for ancient stars. For NGC 205, we record (m-M)o = 24.76 +/- 0.1 mag, based on the RGB I-band tip magnitude method. We find that stars were probably still forming less than 3 x 10^8 yr ago, which is compatible with star formation triggered by an interaction with M31. Key abundance-related results are: (1) The RGB/ faint-AGB is significantly skewed to redder values than that of a control field in the outskirts of M31; it probably results from a relatively narrow metallicity and or age range for a significant fraction of the dwarf's stars. (2) For ancient stars we infer from colour information that the median [Fe/H] > -1.06+/-0.04 dex. We briefly compare the stellar populations of NGC 205, NGC 185 and NGC 147. Finally, we find an apparent blue excess in the outer region of the nuclear star cluster in NGC 205. It is as compact as a typical galactic globular cluster, but is quite bright (10^6 L_solar,R); and by matching its blue colour with models, its stellar population is young, up to a few times 10^8 yr old., Comment: To appear in the May edition of the Astronomical Journal. We have compiled an extensive dataset on potential parts of the Monoceros tidal stream and performed an exhaustive survey of dwarf galaxy semi-analytic orbits in order to constrain its orbital properties. The best-fit orbits are subsequently realized as self-consistent N-body simulations in order to reproduce the spatial and velocity distribution of satellite debris. We find that all kinematic and geometric constraints can be fit by a single stream allowing for multiple wraps. The orbital eccentricity and inclination of the progenitor are strongly constrained to be e = 0.10 \pm 0.05 and i = 25 \pm 5 deg. Ten new estimates of proper motions from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) clearly exclude all retrograde orbits. Particles lost by the satellite populate two, nearly concentric rings naturally explaining the detection of stream stars at both 6--8 kpc (Ibata et al. 2003, Newberg et al. 2003) and 12--18 kpc (the Tri/And stream; Rocha-Pinto et al. 2003) from the Sun. We have attempted to predict the present location of the Monoceros stream progenitor using different information: (i) the kinematical and spatial distribution of detections and (ii) the different mean metallicity in the innner and the outer rings. A current location at l ~ 245, b ~ -18., with a distance to the Sun r_s~15 kpc, reproduces the available constraints. The mass of the progenitor has been poorly determined due to the slow orbital decay. Similar fits have been obtained for masses (3-9)10^8 M_sun. We present the stellar main sequence luminosity function (LF) of the disrupted, low-mass, low-concentration globular cluster Palomar 5 and its well-defined tidal tails, which emanate from the cluster as a result of its tidal interaction with the Milky Way. The results of our deep (B ~ 24.5) wide-field photometry unequivocally indicate that preferentially fainter stars were removed from the cluster so that the LF of the cluster's main body exhibits a significant degree of flattening compared to other globular clusters. There is clear evidence of mass segregation, which is reflected in a radial variation of the LFs. The LF of the tidal tails is distinctly enhanced with faint, low-mass stars. Pal 5 exhibits a binary main sequence, and we estimate a photometric binary frequency of roughly 10%. We present the results of a search for variable stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Phoenix. Nineteen Cepheids, six candidate long-period variables, one candidate eclipsing binary and a large number of candidate RR Lyrae stars have been identified. Periods and light curves have been obtained for all the Cepheid variables. Their distribution in the period-luminosity diagram reveals that both Anomalous Cepheids (AC) and short-period Classical Cepheids s-pCC are found in our sample. This is the first time that both types of variable star are identified in the same system even though they likely coexist, but have gone unnoticed so far, in other low-metallicity galaxies like Leo A and Sextans A. We argue that the conditions for the existence of both types of variable star in the same galaxy are a low metallicity at all ages, and the presence of both young and intermediate-age (or old, depending on the nature of AC) stars. The RR Lyrae candidates trace, together with the well developed horizontal branch, the existence of an important old population in Phoenix. The different spatial distributions of s-pCC, AC and RR Lyrae variables in the Phoenix field are consistent with the stellar population gradients found in Phoenix, in the sense that the younger population is concentrated in the central part of the galaxy. The gradients in the distribution of the young population within the central part of Phoenix, which seem to indicate a propagation of the recent star formation, are also reflected in the spatial distribution of the s-pCC., Comment: 44 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. We present the first WFPC2 V, I photometry for the Sculptor Group galaxy NGC 300 in four fields ranging from the centre to the outer edge. We have made the first measurement of the star formation histories in two disk fields: the oldest stars were born at similar epochs and formation activity increased but at different mean rates. The main disk stellar population is predominantly old, consisting of RGB and AGB stars, based on a synthetic colour magnitude diagram analysis. Z is found to have been more metal poor than 0.006 (or 0.33Zsolar) with no evidence for significant change in the mean Z value over time in both disk fields. In the central region, we find a dearth of bright stars with respect to the two disk fields that cannot be explained by observational effects. Taken at face value, this finding would agree with the Davidge (1998) report of suppressed star formation there during the past 1Gyr with respect to his disk fields at larger radii; but the possibility of significant central extinction affecting our finding remains. We have also determined the first distance modulus estimate based on the tip of the red giant branch method: on the Cepheid distance scale of Ferrarese et al. (2000) we find (m-M)o = 26.56+/-0.07 (+/-0.13) mag; and a similar value from the Cepheid-independent empirical method by Lee et al. (1993), both in good agreement with the Cepheid distance determined by Freedman et al. (2001). A discrepancy between this and the theoretical calibration of the red giant branch tip magnitude method remains. We have the unique opportunity to observe and model nearby streams around the two large Local Group spirals Milky Way and M31 in great detail. However, the detection of streams around other external galaxies is required to verify the general application of the derived results. We give a short summary of streams around other galaxies known in the literature, measuring for the first time the surface brightness of Malin's M83 stream with modern CCD imaging. The main aim of this paper is to report two new detections of tidal debris in the northern stream of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy located at 45 arcdeg and 55 arcdeg from the center of galaxy. Our observational approach is based on deep color-magnitude diagrams, that provides accurate distances, surface brightness and the properties of stellar population of the studied region of this tidal stream. The derived distances for these tidal debris wraps are 45 kpc and 54 kpc respectively.We also confirm these detections with numerical simulations of the Sagittarius dwarf plus the Milky Way. The model reproduces the present position and velocity of the Sagittarius main body and presents a long tidal stream formed by tidal interaction with the Milky Way potential. This model is also in good agreement with the available observations of the Sagittarius tidal stream. We also present a method for estimating the shape of the Milky Way halo potential using numerical simulations. From our simulations we obtain an oblateness of the Milky Way dark halo potential of 0.85, using the current database of distances and radial velocities of the Sagittarius tidal stream. The color-magnitude diagram of the apocenter of Sagittarius shows that this region of the stream shares the complex star formation history observed in the main body of the galaxy. We present the first evidence for a gradient in the stellar population along the stream, possibly correlated with its different pericenter passages. We present the main sequence luminosity function of the tidally disrupted globular cluster Palomar 5 and its tidal tails. For this work we analyzed imaging data obtained with the Wide Field Camera at the INT (La Palma) and data from the Wide Field Imager at the MPG/ESO 2.2 m telescope at La Silla down to a limiting magnitude of approximately 24.5 mag in B. Our results indicate that preferentially fainter stars were removed from the cluster so that the LF of the cluster's main body exhibits a significant degree of flattening compared to other GCs. This is attributed to its advanced dynamical evolution. Using wide-field photometric data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) we recently showed that the Galactic globular cluster Palomar 5 is in the process of being tidally disrupted. Its tidal tails were initially detected in a 2.5 degree wide band along the celestial equator. A new analysis of SDSS data for a larger field now reveals that the tails of Pal 5 have a much larger spatial extent and can be traced over an arc of 10 deg across the sky, corresponding to a projected length of 4 kpc at the distance of the cluster. The number of former cluster stars found in the tails adds up to about 1.2 times the number of stars in the cluster. The radial profile of stellar surface density in the tails follows approximately a power law r^gamma with -1.5 < gamma < -1.2. The stream of debris from Pal 5 is significantly curved, which demonstrates its acceleration by the Galactic potential. The cluster is presently near the apocenter but has repeatedly undergone disk crossings in the inner part of the Galaxy leading to strong tidal shocks. Our results suggest that the observed debris originates mostly from mass loss within the last 2 Gyrs. The cluster is likely to be destroyed after the next disk crossing, which will happen in about 100 Myr. Dwarf satellite galaxies undergo strong tidal forces produced by the main galaxy potential. These forces disturb the satellite, producing asymmetries in its stellar distribution, tidal tail formation, and modifications of the velocity dispersions profiles. Most of these features are observed in the Ursa Minor (UMi) dwarf spheroidal galaxy, which is one of the closest satellites of the Milky Way. These features show that UMi is been tidally disrupted and probably not in virial equilibrium. The high velocity dispersion of UMi could also be a reflection of this tidal disruption and not the signature of the large dark matter content that would be deduced if virial equilibrium is assumed. In order to avoid the uncertainty produced when virial equilibrium is assumed in systems in strong tidal fields, we present a new method of calculating the mass-to-luminosity ratio of disrupted dwarf galaxies. This method is based on numerical simulations and only takes into account the shape of the dwarf density profile and the tidal tail brightness, but does not depend on the kinematics of the dwarf. Applying this method to UMi, we obtain a mass-to-luminosity relation of 12, which is lower than the value obtained assuming virial equilibrium (M/L=60). In addition, if UMi has a large dark-matter content, it will be impossible to reproduce a tidal tail as luminous as the one observed., Comment: 13 pages (including two figures). Photometry of a large field around the young globular cluster Palomar 12 has revealed the main-sequence of a low surface-brightness stellar system. This main-sequence is indicative of a stellar population that varies significantly in metallicity and/or age, but in the mean is more metal poor than Pal 12. Under different assumptions for the properties of this population, we find distances from the Sun in the range 17-24 kpc, which encompasses the distance to Pal 12, $19.0\pm0.9$ kpc. The stellar system is also detected in a field 2$\arcdeg$ North of Pal 12, which indicates it has a minimum diameter of $\sim0.9$ kpc. The orbit of Pal 12 (Dinescu et al. 2000), the color-magnitude diagram of the stellar system, their positions on the sky, and their distances suggest that they are debris from the tidal disruption of the Sgr dSph galaxy. As a part of a project devoted to the study of the Ursa Minor dSph, the star formation history of the galaxy is presented in this paper. The analysis uses wide field photometry, encompassing about 1deg x 1deg (the total covered area being 0.75 deg^2), which samples the galaxy out to its tidal radius. Derivation of the SFH has been performed using the synthetic partial model technique. The resulting SFH shows that Ursa Minor hosts a predominantly old stellar population, with virtually all the stars formed earlier than 10 Gyr ago and 90% of them formed earlier than 13 Gyr ago. Nevertheless, Ursa Minor color-magnitude diagram shows several stars above the main, old turn-off forming a blue-plume (BP). If these stars were genuine, main-sequence stars, Ursa Minor would have maintained a low star formation rate extending up to 2 Gyr ago. However, several indications (relative amount and spatial distribution of BP stars and difficulty to retain processed gas) play against this possibility. In such context, the most reliable hypothesis is that BP stars are blue-stragglers originating in the old population, Ursa Minor hence remaining the only Milky Way dSph satellite to host a pure old stellar population. A marginally significant age gradient is detected, in the sense that stars in outer regions are slightly younger, in average. The distance of Ursa Minor, has been calculated using the magnitude of the horizontal-branch and a calibration based on Hipparcos data of main sequence sub-dwarfs. We estimated a distance d=76+/-4 Kpc, which is slightly larger than previous estimates. From the RGB color, we estimate a metallicity [Fe/H]=-1.9+/-0.2, in agreement with a previous spectroscopic determination. Standard cosmology predicts that dwarfs were the first galaxies to be formed in the Universe and that many of them merge afterwards to form bigger galaxies such as the Milky Way. This process would have left behind traces such as tidal debris or tidal streams in the outer halo. We report here the detection of two new tidal debris of the northern stream of the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy, based in the analysis of wide field, deep color- magnitude diagrams. These detections provide strong observational evidence that the stripped debris of Sagittarius extends up to 60 degrees from its center, suggesting that the stream of this galaxy completely wraps the Milky Way in an almost polar orbit. Our negative detections also suggest the stream is narrow, supporting a nearly spherical Milky Way dark matter halo potential., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The photometric and morphological properties, as well as the star formation history, of the Draco dwarf spheroidal galaxy are analyzed on the basis of wide field, CCD photometry of the resolved stars covering about 1deg^2. No metallicity gradient is detected. The star surface density distribution can be fitted by a single exponential law of scale-length a=5'.0+/-0'.1. The central surface magnitude is mu_V=24.4+/-0.5 and the core radius r_c=7'.5+/- 0.'3 (equivalent to r_c=175+/-7 pc). Within errors, the same scale-lengths are found for the density profiles along the semi-major axis and the semi-minor axis (re-scaled to semi-major axis units, using the ellipticity of the galaxy) of Draco. There are hence no evidences of a tidal-tail associated to Draco. The tidal radius of the galaxy is found to be r_t~42' (~1 kpc). The possibility that the large mass-to-light relation in Draco could be accounted for by a convenient spatial orientation is rejected, which implies that other mechanisms (e.g., dark matter) are required. The stellar population of Draco is mainly old. Although some intermediate-age population is present in Draco, most of the star formation (up to 90%) took place before ~10 Gyr ago. No significant star formation activity is detected in the last ~2 Gyr. We present the first radial velocity measurement of the stellar component of the Local Group dwarf galaxy Phoenix, using FORS1 at the VLT UT1 (ANTU) telescope. From the spectra of 31 RGB stars, we derive an heliocentric optical radial velocity of Phoenix Vo=-52 +/- 6 \kms. On the basis of this velocity, and taking into account the results of a series of semi-analytical and numerical simulations, we discuss the possible association of the HI clouds observed in the Phoenix vicinity. We conclude that the characteristics of the HI cloud with heliocentric velocity --23 \kms are consistent with this gas having been associated with Phoenix in the past, and lost by the galaxy after the last event of star formation in the galaxy, about 100 Myr ago. Two possible scenarios are discussed: the ejection of the gas by the energy released by the SNe produced in that last event of star formation, and a ram-pressure stripping scenario. Both in the SNe ejection case and in the ram-pressure sweeping scenario, the distances and relative velocities imply that the HI cloud is not gravitationally bound to Phoenix, since this would require a Phoenix total mass about an order of magnitude larger than its total estimated mass. Finally, we discuss the possibility that Phoenix may be a bound Milky Way satellite. The minimum required mass of the Milky Way for Phoenix to be bound is $M_{MW}(<450 {\rm kpc}) \ge 1.2 \times 10^{12}$ M$_{\odot}$ which comfortably fits within most current estimates., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomical Journal

We report the detection of main-sequence and blue horizontal-branch stars of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy beyond its tidal radius, indicating the existence of a possible tidal extension in this satellite of the Milky Way. This tidal extension could spread out well beyond the area covered in our survey (R>80 arcmin),as suggested by the presence of a ``break'' to a shallower slope observed in its density profile. The V-band surface brightness for this possible tidal extension range from 29.8 to 31.5 mag arcsec^-2. The area covered in our survey (~1.65 deg^2) is not enough to discriminate if this extra-tidalpopulation is part of a tidal tail or an extended halo around the galaxy. The existence of this tidal extension in Ursa Minor indicates that this satellite is currently undergoing a tidal disruption process by the Milky Way. We discuss the possibility of a tidal origin for the high mass-to-light ratio observed in this galaxy on the basis on our result and recent theoretical simulations of the tidal disruption of dwarf satellites in the Galactic halo., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters
