Abstract

In this work, two different parametric hysteresis models, the Jiles-Atherton model and the Mel'gui relation, have been combined to form a more general hysteresis operator, suitable for the description of families of experimental B(H) curves obtained for low carbon (LC) steel specimens after isothermal annealing at different temperatures and times. As it has been demonstrated in a number of previous studies, characteristic values of steel hysteresis curves can be used as very efficient identifiers for the monitoring of the different metallurgical transformations that take place during the annealing, such as recovery and recrystallisation processes. It is thus important from a practical point to be able to reproduce the experimental curves obtained under different conditions, as precisely as possible, in order to proceed to the samples characterisation. Hybridisation of the two aforementioned models demonstrated satisfactory results for the reproduction of all considered curves obtained under the different considered annealing conditions.

3. Non-destructive magnetic evaluation of microstructure and mechanical properties of advanced high-strength steels

Abstract

Because of more demanding mechanical properties in sheet steel products in the automotive industry, the use of multi-phase steels, capable of complying with those mechanical requirements, has been growing along the last decades. The non-destructive characterization of these steel grades, therefore, has become an active research line worldwide. In the present work, the magnetic characterization by magnetic hysteresis BH loops of various strip samples of industrially cold rolled and annealed DP800 (dual phase) and CP800 (complex phase) steels at several positions with varying processing temperatures in the coil length has been performed. In addition, a detailed EBSD characterization of the samples has allowed determining the fraction of the various microconstituents, namely, ferrite, bainite, martensite and retained austenite. Finally, the mechanical characterization has been done through hardness and tensile tests on all the samples. All the results regarding these three aspects have been analysed carefully to extract likely relationships among them. Clear one-to-one linear correlations have been found between all these features, even though large variations in mechanical/magnetic properties and microstructures have been attained. Specifically, for volume fractions of bainite approximately between 15% to 75%, the yield and tensile strengths show a linear correlation with the coercive field, Hc. Thus, the coercive field may be a candidate to become a parameter for the prediction of the mechanical properties if a previous calibration is performed on these steel grades with multi-phase microstructures.

Abstract

Weight savings in mobility and transport are mandatory in order to reduce CO 2 emissions and energy consumption. The steel industry offers weight saving solutions by a growing portfolio of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) products. AHSS owe their strength to their largely refined and complex microstructures, containing multiple metallurgical phases. Optimal control of the thermo-mechanical processing of AHSS requires inline sensors for real-time monitoring of evolution and consistency of microstructure and material properties. To coordinate and accelerate European development activities in this domain, the project ”Online Microstructure Analytics (OMA)” was established in 2019, constituting of a consortium of 14 specialised research organisations. The EU-funded OMA project, with a total budget exceeding 6 MEU, focuses on inline sensing techniques to monitor the consistency and homogeneity of microstructure, texture and mechanical properties for automotive steels and in particular for AHSS.

Abstract

Because of more demanding mechanical properties in sheet steel products in the automotive industry, the use of multi-phase steels, capable of complying with those mechanical requirements, has been growing along the last decades. The non-destructive characterization of these steel grades, therefore, has become an active research line worldwide. In the present work, the magnetic characterization by magnetic hysteresis BH loops of various strip samples of industrially cold rolled and annealed DP800 (dual phase) and CP800 (complex phase) steels at several positions with varying processing temperatures in the coil length has been performed. In addition, a detailed EBSD characterization of the samples has allowed determining the fraction of the various microconstituents, namely, ferrite, bainite, martensite and retained austenite. Finally, the mechanical characterization has been done through hardness and tensile tests on all the samples. All the results regarding these three aspects have been analysed carefully to extract likely relationships among them. Clear one-to-one linear correlations have been found between all these features, even though large variations in mechanical/magnetic properties and microstructures have been attained. Specifically, for volume fractions of bainite approximately between 15% to 75%, the yield and tensile strengths show a linear correlation with the coercive field, Hc. Thus, the coercive field may be a candidate to become a parameter for the prediction of the mechanical properties if a previous calibration is performed on these steel grades with multi-phase microstructures.

The EU-funded OMA project, with a total budget exceeding 6 MEU, focuses on inline sensing techniques to monitor the consistency and homogeneity of microstructure, texture and mechanical properties for automotive steels and in particular for AHSS.

Abstract

The evolution of magnetic inductive parameters during the annealing of a cold rolled low carbon steel is examined in order to analyze whether these hysteresis parameters can be useful to nondestructively characterize recovery and recrystallization processes. Unlike the induction values measured at 2500 A/m ([B.sub.25]), the remanent induction ([B.sub.r]) values are useful to characterize the decrease in the dislocation density during recovery. As a consequence of recrystallization a weakening of [alpha] fiber texture and an enhancement [gamma] fiber texture components take place. The effect of these textural changes on the magnetic magnetocrystalline energy is analyzed and the observed magnetic response is discussed in terms of this variation. Although [B.sub.r] and [B.sub.25] can be used to monitor recrystallization in the studied steel, [B.sub.25] values are more sensitive due to the significant effect that textural changes during recrystallization have at high induction values. Abstract

In steel manufacturing, the conventional method to determine the mechanical properties and microstructure is by offline, destructive (lab-)characterisation of sample material that is typically taken from the head or the tail of the coil. Since coils can be up to 7 km long, the samples are not always representative for the main coil body. Also, the time delay (typically a few days) between the actual production and the availability of the characterisation results implies that these results cannot be exploited for real-time adaptation of the process settings. Information about the microstructure and material properties can also be obtained from electromagnetic (EM) and ultrasonic (US) parameters, which can be measured in real-time, non-destructively, and over the full length of the steel strip product. With the aim to improve the consistency in product quality by use of inline EM and US measurements, a European project called "Product Uniformity Control" (PUC) has been set up as a broad collaboration between 4 major European Steel Manufacturers and 10 Universities / Research institutes. Using both numerical simulations and experimental characterisations, we study the inline measured EM and US parameters in regard of the microstructural and mechanical properties. In this way, we aim to establish an improved understanding of their mutual relationships, and to apply this knowledge in existing and new nondestructive evaluation techniques. In this paper, the concerted approach of modelling and experimental validation will be addressed, and results of this work will be shown in combination with inline measured data. © 2018 The authors and IOS Press. Abstract

A European consortium consisting of four major steel manufacturers and ten academic technology institutes has conducted a research and development project, called “Product Uniformity Control“ (PUC) in the period 2013 to 2017. This project aimed to develop and improve non-destructive (inline) measurement techniques to characterise the (uniformity of the) microstructure of steel strip products. In this project, a multitude of strip steel samples from various stages of production have been collected from the four participating steel manufacturers. The samples have been characterised in various ways, namely on their (1) non-destructive measurement parameters using different techniques suited for inline evaluation, (2) fundamental ultrasonic and electromagnetic properties (wave speed, ultrasonic attenuation, magnetisation loops, coercive field), (3) tensile properties (stress-strain curves) and (4) microstructure (by optical micrographs and EBSD images). The correlations between these different characterisations will be addressed. Besides the experimental characterisation, a strong accent has been on modelling activities: during the project, fundamental models have been developed to describe, starting from 2D and 3D microstructures, the ultrasonic and magnetic properties, which are next used as input to sensor models that predict the output of the inline measurement systems. This contribution will present the recent results of both the experimental and the modelling work, and underline their mutual importance in the interpretation of the measured data for the benefit of inline characterisation of the mechanical properties complementary to traditional destructive tensile testing.

Abstract

To reduce costs of production and increase economic sustainability it is necessary to introduce quality assessment in an early stage in the manufacturing process. In an ongoing European project (Product Uniformity Control – PUC), the intention is to use ultrasonic information to assess microstructure parameters that are related to macroscale qualities such as mechanical properties. Laser induced ultrasonic technique (LUS) requires no media and can generate and detect ultrasonic information at some distance from the component. This technique is therefore addressed within this project as a solution to measure ultrasonic properties in an industrial environment. Mathematical modelling of the ultrasonic wave propagation problem has been used in order to get a deeper understanding of the physics and to identify ultrasonic properties that can be used as an indirect measurement of grain size. The use of both analytical and numerical models enabled extensive parametric studies together with investigation of ultrasonic interactions with well-defined individual microstructures. The LUS technique has previously been applied to e.g. monitor grain growth during thermomechanical processing of metals. These applications identified and used a correlation with the frequency content of the attenuation. This have been investigated as a possible indirect measurement of grain size, also in this project. The models have been used to verify the correlations and to evaluate different procedures that could be applied as an industrial solution. The suggested procedure is based on deconvolving two successive echoes and has been experimentally validated by two different LUS systems. The reference samples used in the validation were produced by changing the annealing temperature and time to obtain a variation in grain sizes. Abstract

A European consortium consisting of four major steel manufacturers and ten academic technology institutes has conducted a research and development project, called “Product Uniformity Control“ (PUC) in the period 2013 to 2017. This project aimed to develop and improve non-destructive (inline) measurement techniques to characterise the (uniformity of the) microstructure of steel strip products. In this project, a multitude of strip steel samples from various stages of production have been collected from the four participating steel manufacturers. The samples have been characterised in various ways, namely on their (1) non-destructive measurement parameters using different techniques suited for inline evaluation, (2) fundamental ultrasonic and electromagnetic properties (wave speed, ultrasonic attenuation, magnetisation loops, coercive field), (3) tensile properties (stress-strain curves) and (4) microstructure (by optical micrographs and EBSD images). The correlations between these different characterisations will be addressed. Besides the experimental characterisation, a strong accent has been on modelling activities: during the project, fundamental models have been developed to describe, starting from 2D and 3D microstructures, the ultrasonic and magnetic properties, which are next used as input to sensor models that predict the output of the inline measurement systems. Information about the microstructure and material properties can also be obtained from electromagnetic (EM) and ultrasonic (US) parameters, which can be measured in real-time, non-destructively, and over the full length of the steel strip product. With the aim to improve the consistency in product quality by use of inline EM and US measurements, a European project called "Product Uniformity Control" (PUC) has been set up as a broad collaboration between 4 major European Steel Manufacturers and 10 Universities / Research institutes. Using both numerical simulations and experimental characterisations, we study the inline measured EM and US parameters in regard of the microstructural and mechanical properties. In this way, we aim to establish an improved understanding of their mutual relationships, and to apply this knowledge in existing and new nondestructive evaluation techniques. In this paper, the concerted approach of modelling and experimental validation will be addressed, and results of this work will be shown in combination with inline measured data. © 2018 The authors and IOS Press. Abstract

This paper begins by exploring the relationship between magnetic properties such as coercive field, RMS Magnetic Barkhausen Noise (MBN), initial and differential permeability and percentage elongation of skin passed samples for three different steels; interstitial free, micro alloyed and dual phase. A closed magnetic loop system is used to measure the fundamental magnetisation properties and a system based on an impedance analyser and a cylindrical coil is used to determine low field differential permeability. The results show that coercive field increases consistently with increasing percentage elongation for all three steels, as increasing material hardness causes an increase in magnetic hardness and a corresponding increase in coercive field. This effect levels off at higher values as dislocation density saturates. As would be expected, the inverse trend is observed for differential permeability. Similar results are also reported for MBN and initial and low field differential permeability measurements for the interstitial free and dual phase steel, but the behaviour for the micro alloyed samples appears to be more complex. Finally, the paper considers the response of two on-line measurement systems that exploit these magnetic relations. The first system applies pulse excitation and measures the resulting remnant magnetisation and the second analyses the harmonic response from AC excitation. Both systems can detect microstructural changes associated with varying magnetic properties during strip production.

Abstract

International audience; The mechanical properties of steels are controlled by their microstructural parameters, such as grain size, phase balance and precipitates, which are developed during thermo-mechanical processing. It is desirable to be able to monitor microstructural changes during processing, allowing in-situ feedback control, or to characterize microstructure in steel products in a non-contact and non-destructive manner. Electromagnetic (EM) measurements are sensitive to changes in magnetic properties, which, in steels, vary with composition, microstructure and temperature. In order to interpret the EM signal for microstructure analysis, it is important to be able to predict the magnetic properties from the microstructural parameters.In this paper, an extra low carbon steel has been used to generate a single phase microstructure (ferrite) with a range of grain sizes of 14-78 μm. The grain structures were characterised by optical microscopy and EBSD. A Voronoi based algorithm (Multi Level Voronoi), which provides a parametric description of the microstructure, i.e. the boundaries, in a grid format, is used to generate 2D and 3D microstructure models with different grain sizes. Based on these microstructure models, multi scale 2D and 3D magnetic modelling approaches were applied to predict the magnetic properties. At the micro scale, a 3D micro-magnetic simulation code (EMicroM), which considers a finite volume (1003 μm3 cube blocks) of material at a resolution down to the thickness of the domain wall (0.2 μm), has been used to derive the dynamic magnetic behaviour (i.e. hysteresis curve). The predicted coercive fieldvalues have been shown to decrease when the grain size increases, in line with experimentalobservations. The modelled hysteresis loop has a similar coercive fieldvalue with the experimental measured one, although the slopes of the curves are different. At the meso level, a 2D finite element modelling approach using COMSOL Multiphysics was used tosimulate the EM response of an area of around 1000×1000μm2. The model predicts effective relative permeability by considering the ferrite grains and grain boundary regions as constituents with different relative permeability values. The modelled results agree well with the experimentally determined permeability values from EM sensor measurements.

International audience; The uniformity of the microstructure of steel strip over the entire coil length and between different coils of the same grade is key to stable and consistent material behaviour in steel manufacturers’ proprietary processes, like rolling and levelling, and customers’ processes, like pressing and deep-drawing. In particular for high-strength steels, like dual phase and complex phase steels, the microstructure is very sensitive to processing variations resulting in a potentially larger spread in the mechanical properties of the product. In July 2013, a large European consortium consisting of 15 institutes started an RFCS (1) –funded project called “Product Uniformity Control” (PUC) with the primary objective to achieve enhanced and sustained product uniformity of steel strip by improved interpretation of data from inline measurement methods that aim for real-time and non-destructive characterisation of microstructure and techno-mechanical parameters. Commonly, these techniques are based on electromagnetic (EM) or ultrasonic (US) measurement principles, which are favoured because of their non-destructive and potentially contact-free nature. To improve the techniques for in-line materials characterisation, the PUC consortium takes a systematic approach to investigate the interrelations between mechanical properties -- microstructural parameters -- EM & US properties -- inline measurement thereof. The studies involve dedicated laboratory experiments, modelling of the EM and US properties of steel, modelling of inline measurement setups and statistical analysis of data from inline measurement systems. The synthesis of these activities should result in improved, model-based, calibrations and finally in a broader deployment and integration of the inline material characterisation techniques in steel manufacturing, adding value to the product and enhancing the process efficiency throughout the production chain from hot-rolling to finishing. This paper outlines the project approach, highlights interconnecting modelling and experimental research work, and demonstrates first results. Abstract

We performed a retrospective evaluation of 11 patients in the final stages of hepatic disease with chronic kidney failure, in whom simultaneous double liver-kidney transplantation was performed.In the immediate pre-, intra- and postoperative periods, we assessed metabolic, hemodynamic and coagulation parameters; bicarbonate, calcium and inotropic drug requirements; the incidences during reperfusion of the graft; the surgical technique employed; the need for hemodialysis and/or ultrafiltration; and the survival rate of the patients.Of the 11 cases studied, four patients needed hemodialysis, while only one patient needed ultrafiltration; three patients required both techniques, and no dialysis or ultrafiltration was performed in three patients. The following surgical techniques were employed: Total clamping of the inferior vena cava using an external venovenous bypass in two cases; total clamping of the inferior vena cava without an external venovenous bypass in three cases; and partial clamping of the inferior vena cava with preservation of the retrohepatic cava in six cases. The results showed one death in the first postoperative month and two deaths in the course of subsequent follow-up. The survival rate was 72.7%.The use of conventional intraoperative hemodialysis and/or ultrafiltration is feasible, useful and achieves good results in patients undergoing double liver-kidney transplantation. Partial clamping of the inferior vena cava at the anhepatic stage appears to reduce the need for ultrafiltration. There is no increase in perioperative mortality in patients who underwent liver transplantation while conserving their renal function.

Abstract

Introduction Subarachnoid spinal haematomas are uncommon when compared with epidural and subdural hematomas. Since bleeding is into the cerebro spinal fluid, its composition and pulsatility make it difficult for the blood to coagulate. It is even rarer for bleeding to be spontaneous, with no demonstrable cause on laboratory and neuro imaging investigations. Usually occupation of the vertebral canal by a haematoma indicates the need for surgical decompression to free the spinal cord or medulla oblongata. Magnetic resonance is the technique of choice to study disorders of the spinal cord and soft tissues, due to the clear contrast imaging. Case report We report the case of a 70 year old woman with acute lumbar pain followed by motor deficit in both legs. Magnetic resonance showed a collection of blood in the subarachnoid space ventral to the medullar oblongata. In spite of doing laboratory and radio imaging investigations, no cause could be found for the bleeding. Hematomas ventral to the spinal cord can be treated medically as there is less risk of spinal compression at this site, since the subarachnoid space is greater. The patient improved with conservative treatment. Conclusions Magnetic resonance following treatment showed that the subarachnoid hematoma had resolved.

Background/aims: We performed a retrospective evaluation of 11 patients in the final stages of hepatic disease with chronic kidney failure, in whom simultaneous double liver-kidney transplantation was performed., Methodology: In the immediate pre-, intra- and postoperative periods, we assessed metabolic, hemodynamic and coagulation parameters; bicarbonate, calcium and inotropic drug requirements; the incidences during reperfusion of the graft; the surgical technique employed; the need for hemodialysis and/or ultrafiltration; and the survival rate of the patients., Results: Of the 11 cases studied, four patients needed hemodialysis, while only one patient needed ultrafiltration; three patients required both techniques, and no dialysis or ultrafiltration was performed in three patients. The following surgical techniques were employed: Total clamping of the inferior vena cava using an external venovenous bypass in two cases; total clamping of the inferior vena cava without an external venovenous bypass in three cases; and partial clamping of the inferior vena cava with preservation of the retrohepatic cava in six cases. The results showed one death in the first postoperative month and two deaths in the course of subsequent follow-up. The survival rate was 72.7%., Conclusions: The use of conventional intraoperative hemodialysis and/or ultrafiltration is feasible, useful and achieves good results in patients undergoing double liver-kidney transplantation. Partial clamping of the inferior vena cava at the anhepatic stage appears to reduce the need for ultrafiltration. There is no increase in perioperative mortality in patients who underwent liver transplantation while conserving their renal function.
