1. SHAMe-SF: Predicting the clustering of star-forming galaxies with an enhanced abundance matching model

Abstract

With the advent of several galaxy surveys targeting star-forming galaxies, it is important to have models capable of interpreting their spatial distribution in terms of astrophysical and cosmological parameters. To address this need, we introduce SHAMe-SF, an extension of the subhalo abundance matching (SHAM) technique designed specifically for analyzing the redshift-space clustering of star-forming galaxies. Our model directly links a galaxy's star formation rate to the properties of its host dark-matter halo, with further modulations based on effective models of feedback and gas stripping. To quantify the accuracy of our model, we show that it simultaneously reproduces key clustering statistics such as the projected correlation function, monopole, and quadrupole of star-forming galaxy samples at various redshifts and number densities. Notably, these tests were conducted over a wide range of scales $[0.6, 30]\hMpc$, using samples from both the TNG300 magneto-hydrodynamic simulation and from a semi-analytical model. SHAMe-SF can also reproduce the clustering of simulated galaxies that fall within the colour selection criteria employed by DESI for emission line galaxies. Abstract

The formation of galaxies can be understood in terms of the assembly patterns of each type of galactic component. To perform this kind of analysis, is necessary to define some criteria to separate those components. Decomposition methods based on dynamical properties are more physically motivated than photometry-based ones. We use the unsupervised Gaussian Mixture model of \texttt{galactic structure finder} to extract the components of a sub-sample of galaxies with Milky Way-like masses from the EAGLE simulations. A clustering in the space of first and second order dynamical moments of all identified substructures reveals five types of galaxy components: thin and thick disks, stellar halos, bulges and spheroids. We analyse the dynamical, morphological and stellar population properties of these five component types, exploring to what extent these properties correlate with each other, and how much they depend on the total galaxy stellar and dark matter halo masses. All galaxies contain a bulge, a stellar halo and a disk. 60% of objects host two disks (thin and thick), and 68% host also a spheroid. The dynamical disk-to-total ratio does not depend on stellar mass, but the median rotational velocities of the two disks do. Thin disks are well separated in stellar ages, [Fe/H] and $\alpha$-enhancement from the three dispersion-dominated components, while thick disks are in between. Except for thin disks, all components show correlations among their stellar population properties: older ages mean lower metallicities and larger $\alpha$-enhancement. 7. Engaging (or Not) in Coalition Politics: A Case Study of Black and Latinx Community Advocacy toward Educational Equity

Abstract

The potential for cross-racial coalitions between minoritized communities in educational advocacy and policymaking is enhanced as communities become increasingly diverse. In this qualitative case study, we use interviews and archival data to explore coalition politics between Black and Latinx community leaders in a large, metropolitan school district in the U.S. Mountain West. Utilizing postcolonial feminist theory and critical race theory, we explore how and why Black and Latinx communities engage (or not) in coalition politics to advocate for educational equity. We found that although these communities rarely engaged in coalition politics, they sometimes developed what we termed micro-coalitions. This is a small, yet powerful and promising coalition grounded in a deep understanding of historical racial injustices and explicit efforts to navigate tensions and support both communities. We further highlight how district and state leaders leveraged existing tensions and adopted broadened but weakened policies to appease these communities.

8. Teacher Beliefs about Multilingual Learners: How Language Ideologies Shape Teachers' Hypothetical Policymaking

Abstract

Teachers' language ideologies shape their classroom language policy-making, which in turn shapes students' opportunities to learn. Attention to language ideologies is therefore critical for teacher educators who seek to support pre- and in-service teachers in becoming pro-multilingual policymakers. This mixed methods, survey-based study explores the language ideologies and hypothetical policy-making of 134 pre- and in-service teachers at a large public university in Arizona. It employs decision tree models to examine connections between participants' demographics, their language ideologies, and their hypothetical policymaking around Spanish-English dual-language bilingual education (DLBE). Findings show intersections between current and future educators': (a) contextualized experiences, (b) ability to discuss DLBE accurately (without misunderstandings), and (c) ability to engage concretely with details of hypothetical policy making around DLBE. The study offers a unique vantage point from which to consider how pre- and in-service teacher education can inform teachers' accurate understandings of DLBE/multilingualism, language ideological stances, and stances toward linguistic diversity.

27. Moving Away from the 4-Hour Block: Arizona's Distinctive Path to Reversing Its Restrictive Language Policies

Abstract

In spring 2019, without controversy or fanfare and without violating the voter mandate of Proposition 203, emergent bilinguals in Arizona were once again granted unrestricted access to dual language bilingual education after nearly 20 years. The policy change was accomplished through a seemingly small piece of legislation that reduced the daily Structured English Immersion requirement from four hours to two hours. In this study, we analyze the Senate and House education committee hearings in which this legislation was unanimously approved before being signed into law by the governor. Using critical discourse analysis and through a theoretical lens of interest convergence, we examine the strategic moves utilized by speakers and legislators to build consensus for this remarkable, yet overlooked, legislation. We found that, in contrast to policy reforms in California and Massachusetts, which used a "multilingualism-for-all" strategy, the speakers and legislators in Arizona focused on English learners. Yet, they worked to show that a change benefitting English learners would also benefit parents, schools, teachers, districts, and even the state of Arizona. Our findings suggest that advocacy for bilingual education that is informed by contextual awareness and translated into the local discourse can produce success, even in conservative contexts such as Arizona.

Abstract

Bob Dylan has been mostly addressed from the perspective of his controversial relationship with politics, religion, and literature. Very few critics have focused on Bob Dylan’s masculinity and performativity, and so this thesis fills what is an evident gap in a seemingly crowded critical field. The thesis investigates the historical, social, and political factors that shaped the construction of Dylan’s masculinity and its importance in popular culture, drawing upon key critics and their corresponding works in order to analyze the way in which Dylan’s rebellion, fragmentation, and mystery were key features that destabilized the hegemonic models of performativity that prevailed during the Cold War. Between 1962 and 1970, Bob Dylan released ten studio albums that allowed him to display seven different sides of himself as an outsider and folk apprentice in Bob Dylan (1962), spokesman of his generation in The Freewheelin’ (1963), a prophet in The Times They Are A-Changin’ (1964), experimental artist in Bringing It All Back Home (1965), a man of action in Highway 61’ Revisited (1965), and as a rebellious, individualist performer in Blonde on Blonde (1966). Through Dylan’s shifting away from previous ‘spokesman of a generation’ through rebellious performer to a mature, bucolic ‘persona seems a drift towards conservatism and withdrawal from political engagement, what I call his ‘state of becoming’ allowed him to regenerate at personal and professional levels throughout the decade, even after his 1966 motorcycle crash. Dylan’s refusal to be the ‘voice of his generation’ is taken as evidence of his self-determination and ongoing refusal, but also of a dynamic relationship between audience and performer/ performance that changes over time. In analyzing Dylan’s albums, song lyrics, filmed performances and acting roles, and his experiments with art and literature, the thesis offers a different perspective on Dylan’s relationship to post-war masculinities.

39. The treatment of bacterial disease of plants by bacteriophage coated nanoparticles

Abstract

Bacterial phytopathogens are a recurring issue for agricultural plants. Traditional control measures include copper treatment and use of pesticides and antibiotics. The use of bacteriophages that selectively kill the causative pathogen as an alternative treatment has been delayed by technical difficulties associated with phage stability and deployment methods. In this project, we developed phage-coated nanoparticles for the control of tomato plant soft rot, caused by Pectobacterium carotovorum, as a model system. Scottish crops were used as a source to isolate new bacteriophages,followed by triple isolation of single plaques formed after infection. Using the enrichment technique, that uses bacteria to isolate the virus from a soil sample, twelve potentially different bacteriophages were recovered and fully characterised. All of the phages isolated resemble T7 based on morphology by transmission electron microscopy; consistent with the genomic characterisation, electron microscopy revealed that the phages displayed a morphology characteristic of the Podoviridae. Subsequently, we covalently bound a collection of phages to the surface of different nanoparticles and the capacity of these phage coated nanoparticles to control bacterial plant disease was assessed. This new technology fully retains the antimicrobial capacity of the bacteriophages and enhances its stability, particularly against dehydration,making this technology a potentially good candidate for use of biocontrol agents for crop pathogen treatment.
