Phlebia radiata is a widespread white-rot basidiomycete fungus with significance in diverse biotechnological applications due to its ability to degrade aromatic compounds, xenobiotics, and lignin using an assortment of oxidative enzymes including laccase. In this work, a chemical screen with 480 conditions was conducted to identify chemical inducers of laccase expression in P. radiata. Among the chemicals tested, phenothiazines were observed to induce laccase activity in P. radiata, with promethazine being the strongest laccase inducer of the phenothiazine-derived compounds examined. Secretomes produced by promethazine-treated P. radiata exhibited increased laccase protein abundance, increased enzymatic activity, and an enhanced ability to degrade phenolic model lignin compounds. Transcriptomics analyses revealed that promethazine rapidly induced the expression of genes encoding lignin-degrading enzymes, including laccase and various oxidoreductases, showing that the increased laccase activity was due to increased laccase gene expression. Finally, the generality of promethazine as an inducer of laccases in fungi was demonstrated by showing that promethazine treatment also increased laccase activity in other relevant fungal species with known lignin conversion capabilities including Trametes versicolor and Pleurotus ostreatus.

Land use and land cover changes (LULC) are one of the main factors in global environmental change, as well as one of the main causes of soil and biodiversity loss. The main objective of this research was to determine the dynamics of land use changes in the Bustillos basin located in the municipality of Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua, Mexico. The research consisted of the processing and analysis of satellite images from Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM5) and Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI8). From the classifications obtained through satellite images, six categories of land use were obtained and later were compared through the use of a cross-tabulation matrix. The results showed that the use of remote sensors applied to the evaluation of the dynamics of land use changes allowed for knowing the changes that occurred in a period of 43 years. To compare the land use of the years 1974 and 2016, maps were obtained with soil covers. This served as the basis for the analysis of the changes that occurred. In this way, it was possible to determine the growth of the urban area (7851.48 hectares) due to the development of economic activity and the increase in population. The category that had a more significant increase was the agricultural areas with a gain in surface of the sub-basin of 28,334.23 hectares. The grassland class lost 21,385.28 hectares; this area was associated with the class of agricultural areas and urban areas. The oak–pine forest had losses of 9150.03 hectares, as well as the pine forest (586.06 hectares). Finally, the class of water bodies lost 228.02 hectares. The results showed that the implementation of dynamic LULC using geographic information systems could be adopted as a planning tool to manage LULC in the Bustillos basin in the future.

Because they are believed to be able to lower the costs of an education, e-books have been factored into the technology plans for community colleges and CEGEPs during the current decade. But adoption is a function of perceptions, which this study explored: (1) General perceptions of the CEGEP (collège d'enseignement général et professionnel, a community college-like institution in Quebec) students and faculty towards e-books and (2) the factors that drive those perceptions. Previous studies found that users generally had neutral and positive impressions of e-books and that the following factors drive overall perceptions of e-books: (a) previous experience, (b) reading preferences and tasks; (c) reading habits; (d) convenience; (e) costs; and (f) ownership issues. A survey of the 2,260 faculty and students at a CEGEP in Quebec was conducted, with 247 students and 19 faculty responding. Results indicated wide awareness of e-books and at least some experience with them. Results validated that previous experience drove perceptions, that printed materials generally had more credibility than digital ones (this was more pronounced for books), that many students read online but do not take notes when doing so, users perceive e-books to be more convenient than printed ones, that e-books become attractive when their price is 50% that of print, and that most users think that they own e-textbooks even though most publishers merely rent e-textbooks. The results suggest adoption barriers beyond technology and general perceptions that need to be addressed to increase general use and that designers of zero-cost (Z-degrees or Zed-Cred) degrees should consider.

Introduction GnRh agonists are drugs used in various gynecological pathologies, among which is endometriosis. They act by stimulating GnRh receptors in the pituitary gland. This sustained and continuous stimulation of GnRh, will initially generate an increase in the release of luteinizing hormones and follicle-stimulating hormones, subsequently losing sensitivity to the receptors, internalizing them, and thus suppressing the release of these hormones, which would entail an ovarian suppression, thereby inhibiting the release of estrogens and progesterone. Psychiatric adverse effects have been described. Gonzalez-Rodriguez et al (Front Psychiatry 2020; 11:479), described this association with changes in mood, and the presence of a series of cases where the link between GnRh agonist and the possibility of presenting psychotic symptoms is observed. Wieck (Curr Top Behav Neurosci 2011;8:173-87), Frokjaer (J Neurosci Res 2020;98(7):1283-1292), Brzezinski-Sinai et al (Front Psychiatry 2020;11:693) reported that this association could be related with the relationship of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, hormonal fluctuation and its relationship with the dopaminergic regulation, a genetic component that would increase the predisposition to trigger psychiatric pathology in patients with greater sensitivity to hormonal fluctuations, and the loss of neuroprotection generated by the decrease of estrogens in the central nervous system. All of this in the context of multiple environmental and genetic factors that participate together in the appearance of the disease. Objectives To describe the importance of detecting the risk factors that can precipitate a psychotic episode, including the use of certain drugs, such as GnRh agonists. Methods We describe a case of a 45 year old patient with endometriosis with multiple organ involvement who went to the emergency room due to behavioral changes in the context of a brief psychotic disorder with “ad-integrum” recovery. Results A retrospective analysis of the case is conducted, observing an association between the introduction of GnRh agonists and the presentation of a first psychotic episode. Conclusions The importance of this case lies in the limited evidence of this association in the literature, and the implication of these drugs in the triggering of psychiatric pathology, being an aspect to be considered by psychiatrists in their patient’s follow-up. A partir de la construcción social del género se establecen estereotipos y roles diferenciales para cada sexo, los cuales generan situaciones de discriminación y desigualdad para las mujeres. Esta cuestión se materializa en todos los ámbitos de la vida, incluido el laboral, y trae consigo una diferente valoración entre las funciones que han de desarrollar los hombres frente a las que deben desarrollar las mujeres. Este estudio se plantea el objetivo de analizar cuáles son las cuestiones clave que dificultan a las mujeres ocupar puestos de responsabilidad y liderazgo en las instituciones sociosanitarias. Para ello, hemos utilizado una metodología cualitativa, realizando entrevistas a veinticinco Trabajadoras Sociales, que desarrollan su praxis profesional en entidades de ámbito público, privado y tercer sector de diferentes provincias de la zona de Andalucía Oriental (España). Los resultados señalan que, pese a que la situación de las mujeres ha mejorado en los últimos tiempos, la realidad es que siguen existiendo barreras y obstáculos que impiden hablar de equidad para avanzar hacia la igualdad real, el emprendimiento y liderazgo desde la perspectiva de género en las instituciones sociosanitarias.
