1. Smart Bilingual Focused Crawling of Parallel Documents

Abstract

Crawling parallel texts $\unicode{x2014}$texts that are mutual translations$\unicode{x2014}$ from the Internet is usually done following a brute-force approach: documents are massively downloaded in an unguided process, and only a fraction of them end up leading to actual parallel content. In this work we propose a smart crawling method that guides the crawl towards finding parallel content more rapidly. Our approach builds on two different models: one that infers the language of a document from its URL, and another that infers whether a pair of URLs link to parallel documents. We evaluate both models in isolation and their integration into a crawling tool. The results demonstrate the individual effectiveness of both models and highlight that their combination enables the early discovery of parallel content during crawling, leading to a reduction in the amount of downloaded documents deemed useless, and yielding a greater quantity of parallel documents compared to conventional crawling approaches.

Abstract

Diamond is increasingly popular because of its unique material properties. Diamond defects called nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers allow measurements with unprecedented sensitivity. However, to achieve ideal sensing performance NV centers need to be within nanometers from the surface and are thus strongly dependent on the local surface chemistry. Several attempts have been made to compare diamond surfaces. However, due to the high price of diamond crystals with shallow NV centers, a limited number of chemical modifications have been studied. Here, we developed a systematic method to investigate a continuity of different local environments with a varying density and nature of surface groups in a single experiment on a single diamond plate. To achieve this goal, we used diamonds with a shallow ensemble of NV centers and introduced a chemical gradient across the surface. More specifically we used air and hydrogen plasma. The gradients were formed by low pressure plasma treatment after masking with a right-angled triangular prism shield. As a result, the surface contained gradually more oxygen/hydrogen towards the open end of the shield. We then performed widefield relaxometry to determine the effect of surface chemistry on the sensing performance. Abstract

The Mayan languages comprise a language family with an ancient history, millions of speakers, and immense cultural value, that, nevertheless, remains severely underrepresented in terms of resources and global exposure. In this paper we develop, curate, and publicly release a set of corpora in several Mayan languages spoken in Guatemala and Southern Mexico, which we call MayanV. The datasets are parallel with Spanish, the dominant language of the region, and are taken from official native sources focused on representing informal, day-to-day, and non-domain-specific language. As such, and according to our dialectometric analysis, they differ in register from most other available resources. Additionally, we present neural machine translation models, trained on as many resources and Mayan languages as possible, and evaluated exclusively on our datasets. We observe lexical divergences between the dialects of Spanish in our resources and the more widespread written standard of Spanish, and that resources other than the ones we present do not seem to improve translation performance, indicating that many such resources may not accurately capture common, real-life language usage. 4. Non-Fluent Synthetic Target-Language Data Improve Neural Machine Translation

Abstract

When the amount of parallel sentences available to train a neural machine translation is scarce, a common practice is to generate new synthetic training samples from them. A number of approaches have been proposed to produce synthetic parallel sentences that are similar to those in the parallel data available. These approaches work under the assumption that non-fluent target-side synthetic training samples can be harmful and may deteriorate translation performance. Even so, in this paper we demonstrate that synthetic training samples with non-fluent target sentences can improve translation performance if they are used in a multilingual machine translation framework as if they were sentences in another language. We conducted experiments on ten low-resource and four high-resource translation tasks and found out that this simple approach consistently improves translation performance as compared to state-of-the-art methods for generating synthetic training samples similar to those found in corpora. 5. Understanding the effects of word-level linguistic annotations in under-resourced neural machine translation

Abstract

This paper studies the effects of word-level linguistic annotations in under-resourced neural machine translation, for which there is incomplete evidence in the literature. The study covers eight language pairs, different training corpus sizes, two architectures, and three types of annotation: dummy tags (with no linguistic information at all), part-of-speech tags, and morpho-syntactic description tags, which consist of part of speech and morphological features. These linguistic annotations are interleaved in the input or output streams as a single tag placed before each word. In order to measure the performance under each scenario, we use automatic evaluation metrics and perform automatic error classification. Our experiments show that, in general, source-language annotations are helpful and morpho-syntactic descriptions outperform part of speech for some language pairs. On the contrary, when words are annotated in the target language, part-of-speech tags systematically outperform morpho-syntactic description tags in terms of automatic evaluation metrics, even though the use of morpho-syntactic description tags improves the grammaticality of the output. Abstract

Finding groups of similar image blocks within an ample search area is often necessary in different applications, such as video compression, image clustering, vector quantization, and nonlocal noise reduction. A block-matching algorithm that uses a dissimilarity measure can be applied in such scenarios. In this work, a measure that utilizes the quantum Fourier transform or the Swap test based on the Euclidean distance is proposed. Experiments on small cases with ideal and noisy simulations are implemented. In the case of the Swap test, the IBM and IonQ quantum devices have been used, demonstrating potential for future near-term applications.

9. Optimising data processing for nanodiamond based relaxometry

Abstract

The nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond is a powerful and versatile quantum sensor for diverse quantities. In particular, relaxometry (or T1), allows to detect magnetic noise at the nanoscale. While increasing the number of NV centers in a nanodiamond allows to collect more signal, a standardized method to extract information from relaxometry experiments of such NV ensembles is still missing. In this article, we use T1 relaxation curves acquired at different concentrations of gadolinium ions to calibrate and optimize the entire data processing flow, from the acquired raw data to the extracted T1. In particular, we use a bootstrap to derive a signal to noise ratio (SNR) that can be quantitatively compared from one method to another. At first, T1 curves are extracted from photoluminescence pulses. We compare integrating their signal through an optimized window as performed conventionally, to fitting a known function on it. Fitting the decaying T1 curves allows to obtain the relevant T1 value. We compared here the three most commonly used fit models that are, single, bi, and stretched-exponential. Abstract

In this work, we describe the phase behaviour and the dielectric and conductivity response of new light-responsive ionic liquid crystals, ILCs, which can be applied as controllable electrolytes. The materials include two different dicationic viologens, the asymmetric 6BP18 and the symmetric EV2ON(Tf)2, containing bistriflimide as the counterions, mixed with 5% and 50% molar, respectively, of one new photoresponsive mesogen called CNAzO14. These mixtures exhibit liquid crystal behaviour, light responsiveness through the E-Z photoisomerisation of the azobenzene groups in CNAzO14, and strong dielectric responses. The 5%-CNAzO14/Ev2ON(Tf)2 mixture displays direct current conductivities in the 10−7 S·cm−1 range, which can be increased by a two-fold factor upon the irradiation of UV light at 365 nm. Our findings set the grounds for designing new smart ionic soft materials with nanostructures that can be tuned and used for energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract

In the context of neural machine translation, data augmentation (DA) techniques may be used for generating additional training samples when the available parallel data are scarce. Many DA approaches aim at expanding the support of the empirical data distribution by generating new sentence pairs that contain infrequent words, thus making it closer to the true data distribution of parallel sentences. In this paper, we propose to follow a completely different approach and present a multi-task DA approach in which we generate new sentence pairs with transformations, such as reversing the order of the target sentence, which produce unfluent target sentences. During training, these augmented sentences are used as auxiliary tasks in a multi-task framework with the aim of providing new contexts where the target prefix is not informative enough to predict the next word. This strengthens the encoder and forces the decoder to pay more attention to the source representations of the encoder. Experiments carried out on six low-resource translation tasks show consistent improvements over the baseline and over DA methods aiming at extending the support of the empirical data distribution. Abstract

Free radicals play a key role in the ageing process. The strongly debated free radical theory of ageing even states that damage caused by free radicals is the main cause of aging on a cellular level. However, free radicals are small, reactive and short lived and thus challenging to measure. We utilize a new technique called diamond magnetometry for this purpose. We make use of nitrogen vacancy centers in nanodiamonds. Via a quantum effect these defects convert a magnetic resonance signal into an optical signal. While this method is increasingly popular for its unprecedented sensitivity in physics, we use this technique here for the first time to measure free radicals in living cells. Our signals are equivalent to T1 signals in conventional MRI but from nanoscale voxels from single cells with sub-cellular resolution. With this powerful tool we are able to follow free radical generation after chemically inducing stress. In addition, we can observe free radical reduction in presence of an antioxidant. We were able to clearly differentiate between mutant strains with altered metabolism. Finally, the excellent stability of our diamond particles allowed us to follow the ageing process and differentiate between young and old cells. We could confirm the expected increase of free radical load in old wild type and sod1{\Delta} mutants. We further applied this new technique to investigate tor1{\Delta} and pex19{\Delta} cells. For these mutants an increased lifespan has been reported but the exact mechanism is unclear. 28. Learning synchronous context-free grammars with multiple specialised non-terminals for hierarchical phrase-based translation

Abstract

Translation models based on hierarchical phrase-based statistical machine translation (HSMT) have shown better performances than the non-hierarchical phrase-based counterparts for some language pairs. The standard approach to HSMT learns and apply a synchronous context-free grammar with a single non-terminal. The hypothesis behind the grammar refinement algorithm presented in this work is that this single non-terminal is overloaded, and insufficiently discriminative, and therefore, an adequate split of it into more specialised symbols could lead to improved models. This paper presents a method to learn synchronous context-free grammars with a huge number of initial non-terminals, which are then grouped via a clustering algorithm. Our experiments show that the resulting smaller set of non-terminals correctly capture the contextual information that makes it possible to statistically significantly improve the BLEU score of the standard HSMT approach.

Abstract

We describe the Universitat d'Alacant submissions to the word- and sentence-level machine translation (MT) quality estimation (QE) shared task at WMT 2018. Our approach to word-level MT QE builds on previous work to mark the words in the machine-translated sentence as \textit{OK} or \textit{BAD}, and is extended to determine if a word or sequence of words need to be inserted in the gap after each word. Our sentence-level submission simply uses the edit operations predicted by the word-level approach to approximate TER.
