2. How much does it cost to complete a sticker collection? A simulation study using R

Abstract

This paper considers some computational issues related to the problem of the coupon collector behavior. In addition, we propose a simulation algorithm to find the solution to the problem, where we present as a numerical illustration an album of stickers related to the Qatar 2022 Official Football World Cup, which is being sold in Brazilian newsstands. In this case, the complete album has N = 670 stickers, which are sold in packages containing n = 5 stickers each. The simulation was based on a computational code written in R. For this application we obtained as a solution, an average number of 950 packages needed to complete the album, at an average cost of 3,800 reals (Brazilian currency), assuming that the collector does not exchange any of its repetitions with nobody. All computer code used in this article is provided on GitHub. Abstract

This paper presents inferences for the discrete Bilal (DB) distribution introduced by Altun et al. (2020). We consider parameter estimation for DB distribution in the presence of randomly right-censored data.We use maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods for the estimation of the model parameters. We also consider the inclusion of a cure fraction in the model. The usefulness of the proposed model was illustrated with three examples considering real datasets. These applications suggested that the model based on DB distribution performs at least as good as some other traditional discrete models as the DsFx-I, discrete Lindley, discrete Rayleigh, and discrete Burr- Hatke distributions. R codes are provided in an appendix at the end of the paper so that reader can carry out their own analysis., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures

9. The Bivariate Defective Gompertz Distribution Based on Clayton Copula with Applications to Medical Data

Abstract

In medical studies, it is common the presence of a fraction of patients who do not experience the event of interest. These patients are people who are not at risk of the event or are patients who were cured during the research. The proportion of immune or cured patients is known in the literature as cure rate. In general, the traditional existing lifetime statistical models are not appropriate to model data sets with cure rate, including bivariate lifetimes. In this paper, it is proposed a bivariate model based on a defective Gompertz distribution and also using a Clayton copula function to capture the possible dependence structure between the lifetimes. An extensive simulation study was carried out in order to evaluate the biases and the mean squared errors for the maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters associated to the proposed distribution. Some applications using medical data are presented to show the usefulness of the proposed model.

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss computational aspects to obtain accurate inferences for the parameters of the generalized gamma (GG) distribution. Usually, the solution of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLE) for the GG distribution have no stable behavior depending on large sample sizes and good initial values to be used in the iterative numerical algorithms. From a Bayesian approach, this problem remains, but now related to the choice of prior distributions for the parameters of this model. We presented some exploratory techniques to obtain good initial values to be used in the iterative procedures and also to elicited appropriate informative priors. Finally, our proposed methodology is also considered for data sets in the presence of censorship.

19. Homeopathy for Chronic Non-specific Low Back Pain: Study Protocol for a Randomized, Double-Blind, Crossover, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trial Investigating the Efficacy of the Biotherapic Lumbar Vertebra (The BIOVERT Trial).

Abstract

Background Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) lacks identifiable anatomical pathology and effective pharmacological treatment. Alternative approaches in homeopathy, specifically clinical homeopathy, utilize ultra-diluted (potentized) biological products. In Brazil, standardized biotherapics from sheep tissues, particularly fifty-millesimal (LM) potencies of sheep Lumbar Vertebra , have shown promise in alleviating CNSLBP. Objectives Our objective is to present the study protocol of a clinical trial that will assess the efficacy and safety of the biotherapic Lumbar Vertebra LM2 in the short-term management of CNSLBP and to estimate its therapeutic duration. Methods A randomized, double-blind, crossover, placebo-controlled clinical trial spanning 8 weeks per participant was designed. Participants will include 120 individuals (aged 20 to 60 years) with clinically diagnosed CNSLBP by the study's physiotherapist. Exclusion criteria are radicular pain, signs of radiculopathy, specific lumbar spine disorders, pregnancy, or puerperium (up to 60 days after delivery). The medical intervention includes participants being randomly assigned to one of two treatment sequences: homeopathy–placebo or placebo–homeopathy. The treatments will consist of Lumbar Vertebra LM2 oral solution, topical cream, and indistinguishable placebos. Each treatment period will span 2 weeks, with a 4-week washout interval between them. Primary outcome is the assessment of changes in self-reported pain levels using the numeric rating scale (NRS) score, analyzed with a random effects model across both treatment periods. Secondary outcomes are assessment of changes in self-reported disability levels using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), analyzed with a random effects model across both treatment periods, and pain and disability variations, evaluated by the NRS score and ODI respectively, after the first and second treatment periods. Adverse events will be assessed at weeks 2 and 8. Pain medications will be used concomitantly. Adherence will be evaluated by the weight of medication returned/standard weight. Discussion The BIOVERT (Bioactive Vertebra) trial protocol is designed to investigate a homeopathic strategy for short-term CNSLBP treatment. Favorable outcomes for homeopathy could prompt subsequent studies evaluating the long-term effectiveness of LM potencies of Lumbar Vertebra for CNSLBP. Abstract

Objectives To propose a Portuguese version of the Objective and Subjective Knowledge and HIV Testing Scale (OSK-HIV-TS), assess its content validity, and perform item analysis after administration to a sample of undergraduate students. Methods Three translators translated the OSK-HIV-TS into Portuguese. Judges evaluated each item of a consensus version of the translated instrument for semantic, idiomatic, cultural, and conceptual equivalence. A consensus committee reviewed a back-translation against the original version of the OSK-HIV-TS. Content validity was calculated with the content validity index (CVI) and item analysis was conducted using Classical Test Theory (CTT). Results The translated scale achieved semantic, idiomatic, conceptual, and cultural equivalence to the original version. A total of 491 undergraduate students participated and the distribution of students’ responses to the OSK-HIV-TS revealed a high proportion of correct answers. All items were classified as easy or very easy and only item 16 was classified having strong discrimination power according to the discrimination index. Conclusion The OSK-HIV-TS is a novel instrument in the Brazilian literature for assessing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) knowledge and should inspire more research into HIV/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) behavior and associated factors, which, despite being essential and necessary, is still lacking in the Brazilian literature.

49. Prática da doação de sangue de homens que fazem sexo com homens e percepção de acessibilidade nos bancos de sangue após a flexibilização das políticas de diferimento no Brasil

Abstract

Introdução: As normativas brasileiras em vigor até abril de 2020 em relação à doação de sangue por homens que fazem sexo com homens (HSH) estavam vigentes desde 2004 e consideravam que os HSH fossem classificados como inaptos para a doação temporariamente por um período de 12 meses após a última relação sexual considerada de risco. Essa restrição foi derrubada em maio de 2020, motivada por fortes pressões devido à queda no número de doações pela pandemia de covid-19, e pela evolução dos estudos envolvendo novas terapias de controle da epidemia por meio de transfusão de plasma sanguíneo. Objetivo: Após a flexibilização das normativas, nenhum estudo até o momento se propôs a avaliar a prática da doação por HSHs, lacuna que a presente proposta pretende preencher. Como um segundo objetivo, pretende-se avaliar a percepção de acessibilidade da população de HSH à doação, considerando-se aspectos geográficos, econômicos, culturais e funcionais. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal considerando a população brasileira de HSHs com amostragem não probabilística obtida por meio do método bola de neve. Os procedimentos para a condução do estudo ocorrerão em quatro momentos: a) mapeamento de organizações parceiras; b) contato e consolidação das parcerias; c) seleção das sementes; d) coleta de dados. Os questionários serão aplicados via internet sendo administrados utilizando-se a ferramenta de captura eletrônica de dados REDCap. O questionário online será composto por uma série de questões divididas em seções como dados sociodemográficos, questionário de prática da doação de sangue, questionário de percepção de acessibilidade e questionário sobre o desconforto em responder perguntas adicionais sobre comportamentos sexuais na entrevista de triagem nos bancos de sangue.
