Abstract

ABSTRACTIn statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data‐generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence‐generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty—nonstandard errors (NSEs). We study NSEs by letting 164 teams test the same hypotheses on the same data. NSEs turn out to be sizable, but smaller for more reproducible or higher rated research. Adding peer‐review stages reduces NSEs. We further find that this type of uncertainty is underestimated by participants.

Abstract

A pi-conjugated {C}3h-oligomer involving three dithienylethylene branches bridged at the meta positions of a central benzenic core has been synthesized and deposited either on the Si(100) surface or on the HOPG surface. On the silicon surface, scanning tunneling microscopy allows the observation of isolated molecules. Conversely, by substituting the thiophene rings of the oligomers with alkyl chains, a spontaneous ordered film is observed on the HOPG surface. As the interaction of the oligomers is different with both surfaces, the utility of the Si(100) surface to characterize individual oligomers prior to their use into a 2D layer is discussed.

Standard errors measure the uncertainty in sample estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: non-standard errors. To study them, we let 164 teams test six hypotheses on the same sample. We find that non-standard errors are sizeable, on par with standard errors. Their size (i) co-varies only weakly with team merits, reproducibility, or peer rating, (ii) declines significantly after peer-feedback, and (iii) is underestimated by participants.

Item does not contain fulltext, In statistics, samples are drawn from a population in a data-generating process (DGP). Standard errors measure the uncertainty in sample estimates of population parameters. In science, evidence is generated to test hypotheses in an evidence-generating process (EGP). We claim that EGP variation across researchers adds uncertainty: non-standard errors. To study them, we let 164 teams test six hypotheses on the same sample. We find that non-standard errors are sizeable, on par with standard errors. Their size (i) co-varies only weakly with team merits, reproducibility, or peer rating, (ii) declines significantly after peer-feedback, and (iii) is underestimated by participants.

Abstract

Aboriginal teacher education programs have existed in Canada for four decades. Theirprimary purpose is to increase the number of Aboriginal teachers in Canadian schoolsso more relevant and effective education can be provided for Aboriginal children thanwlmt federal and provincial schooling has offered them in the past. This article presentsthe results of an examination of the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program (ATEP)at the University of Alberta that took place between 2011 and 2015. The study exam��ined the reasons why people enrol in ATEP, their experiences both in higher educationand in ATEP specifically, the perceived adequacy of their preparation as teachers, andtheir experiences as beginning teachers in both provincial and band-controlled schools.It continues and expands on previous work with the Indian Teacher Education Pro��gram at the University of Saskatchewan.Our findings suggest that Aboriginal teachers often enter the teaching professionin response to the need for more effective and appropriate education for Aboriginalchildren, and that ATEP is adequately preparing them to provide culturally relevantand equal educational opportunities for Aboriginal children. Our participants' expe��riences as students in ATEP were overwhelmingly positive and culturally affirming.We conclude that ATEP is a high-calibre program that is making important contribu��tions to improving education for Aboriginal peoples at all levels, and that it can serveas an exemplar for teacher education programs across Canada that have the same goal., Canadian Journal of Native Education, Vol. 38 No. 1 (2015)

Abstract

The ASMBS recommends that patients should be provided with educational materials to improve informed consent about bariatric surgery. Massive online open courses (MOOCs) are learning sources which are free, online, and available to people in remote situations. A French language MOOC regarding preparation for obesity surgery targets patients, as well as HCP, and people curious about this treatment. The patients' knowledge and skills after completion of the 5-week learning sessions (evaluated with semi-direct interviews) improved. Soft skills such as feeling empowered to ask questions to their HCP and explaining their plan to their relatives improved. This study suggests that MOOC can be a resource to improve knowledge and soft skills in patients for a better consent to surgery and follow-up. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Veal caIves are traditionally reared with large amounts of milk replacer with low content of starch. The objectives of the experiment were to test the effects of three levels of substituting fat by starch on energy and N utilisation during the growing (mean body weight (BW): 11 8 kg; starch content from 4 to 13%) and the finishing stage (mean BW: 208 kg; starch content from 4 to 14%). At each stage, four treatments were implemented, exclusively composed of one milk replacer, or one milk replacer, supplemented with solid feed. Each treatment was fed to four caIves per stage at 630 and 545 kJ/kg BW0·R5/d of metabolisable energy (ME) intake during the growing and the finishing stage respectivcly to measure N and energy balances in respiration chambers. Starch content of the milk replacer did not affect digestive and metabolic utilisation of energy during the growing stage whereas both decreased during the finishing stage, because of higher CH4 production. Components of heat production (HP), total HP and total energy retention were never affected by treatment during both stages, but respiratory quotient corrected for protein oxidation significantly increased when starch inclusion level increased. Finally, net energy to ME ratio of all milk replacers averaged 79%.

Abstract

High magnetic field and high spinning frequency one- and two-dimensional one-pulse MAS [super 19]F NMR spectra of [beta]-Zr[F.sub.4] and Ce[F.sub.4] are recorded and reconstructed in order to determine the [super 19]F chemical shift tensor parameters for the seven different crystallographic fluorine sites of each compound. A satisfactory reliability is obtained with a root-mean-square (rms) deviation between calculated and measured isotropic chemical shift values equal to 1.5 and 3.5 ppm for [beta]-Zr[F.sub.4] and Ce[F.sub.4], respectively.

Abstract

La maîtrise de la saisonnalité de la reproduction est un enjeu pour les filières ovines et caprines. Dans le contexte socio-économique actuel, l’essor de pratiques alternatives aux traitements hormonaux d’induction et de synchronisation des chaleurs et des ovulations est nécessaire en Agriculture Conventionnelle (AC) et de nouvelles perspectives d’évolution sont attendues en Agriculture Biologique (AB). À partir d’enquêtes réalisées auprès de 97 intervenants en élevage et 298 éleveurs ovins et caprins en AB et en AC, nous avons dressé un état des lieux des pratiques de gestion de la reproduction mises en œuvre dans les principaux bassins de production en France. Puis, nous avons évalué l’acceptabilité des acteurs vis-à-vis de deux outils innovants associés à la gestion de la reproduction : l’utilisation de phéromones impliquées dans l’effet mâle (comme alternative aux traitements hormonaux pour l’induction et la synchronisation des ovulations et des chaleurs) et la détection automatisée des chaleurs (pour optimiser la mise à la reproduction par IA ou pour la lutte en main). D’après les enquêtes, les pratiques de dessaisonnement de la reproduction impliquant les traitements lumineux, le recours à la mélatonine et les lactations longues sont quasi exclusivement mises en œuvre par les producteurs caprins. Les traitements hormonaux pour l’induction et la synchronisation des chaleurs et la mélatonine sont interdits par le cahier des charges en AB et donc exclusivement utilisés en AC. Au contraire, l’effet mâle est pratiqué dans l’ensemble des filières. La détection des chaleurs n’est mise en œuvre que par les éleveurs caprins et ovins laitiers. Enfin, le flushing est surtout pratiqué en filière ovine. L’utilisation potentielle des phéromones pour induire et synchroniser les chaleurs intéresse à la fois les intervenants et les éleveurs. En AB, cette technique soulève cependant des questions quant au respect du cahier des charges. L’accueil réservé aux détecteurs automatisés de chaleurs est plus mitigé. Si leur intérêt pour l’organisation du travail et la facilitation des IA a été exprimé par les éleveurs, ces derniers ont soulevé une inquiétude quant à l’inadéquation par rapport aux conduites d’élevage au pâturage a été soulevée. Si certains éleveurs sont prêts à acquérir les deux types de dispositifs, ils sont en attente des résultats concernant l’efficacité, le coût et la praticité des outils avant d’envisager de s’équiper., A major concern for small ruminant productions is to control the seasonality of reproduction. The current socio-economic context incites both to develop alternatives to hormonal treatment for the induction and synchronization of oestrus for conventional farms and to propose new perspectives for organic farms. We established the current state of reproduction management practices implemented in the six French main production areas from surveys of 97 farm stakeholders and 298 sheep and goat breeders under both conventional and organic farming. We then evaluated the acceptability of the actors for two innovative tools related to reproduction management on farms: the use of pheromones involved in the male effect (an alternative to hormonal treatment for induction and synchronization of ewe oestrus) and the automated electronic oestrus detection (to optimize the mating moment for AI or natural service). The light-based treatments, the use of melatonin and long lactations which induce out-of-season breeding are only met on goat farms. Flushing is mainly performed on sheep farms. PDO specifications do not allow the use of hormonal treatment and melatonin, which are consequently solely used under conventional farming. By contrast, the male effect is mentioned for goat and sheep farms. Estrus detection is performed only on dairy flocks for goats and ewes. Lastly, flushing is mainly used on ewe farms. Breeders and stakeholders are interested by the use of pheromones for the induction and the synchronization of oestrus. However, a question has arisen on the compatibility of this tool with the specifications of organic farms. The picture is more mixed for automated detection devices. Their ability to facilitate the work organization and the artificial insemination process is highlighted by breeders. The latter are nevertheless worried about the inconsistency of the tool with their current flock management on pasture. Although some breeders are ready to use the two tools, they are therefore waiting for the results on effectiveness / cost / ease of use before buying them.

National audience; En race ovine, l’Insémination Artificielle (IA) est généralement réalisée après traitement hormonal d’induction et de synchronisation des ovulations, et les brebis sont inséminées 55 h ± 1 h après le retrait de l’éponge vaginale (contenant un progestagène) en semence fraiche (Fatet et al., 2008). Une baisse de fertilité à l’IA a été observée en race Rouge de l’Ouest, ce qui a conduit les éleveurs et l’Organisme de Sélection GEODE à chercher des pistes d’amélioration. Or certains centres d’IA se sont interrogés sur l’effet du moment d’IA après retrait de l’éponge sur la fertilité : par exemple en races Lacaune viande et Blanche du Massif Central (Fréret et al., 2009) ou en race Corse (Aragni et al., 2014). Dans une étude préliminaire menée en race Rouge de l’Ouest, notre objectif a été de tester l’effet d’un allongement de 4 ou 8 h du délai d’IA moyen (par rapport au délai préconisé) sur le taux de réussite à l’IA.
