1. Fast quasi-periodic oscillations in the eclipsing polar VV Puppis from VLT and XMM-Newton observations

Abstract: We present high time resolution optical photometric data of the polar VV Puppis obtained simultaneously in three filters (u', HeII $\lambda$4686, r') with the ULTRACAM camera mounted at the ESO-VLT telescope. An analysis of a long 50 ks XMM-Newton observation of the source, retrieved from the database, is also provided. Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are clearly detected in the optical during the source bright phase intervals when the accreting pole is visible, confirming the association of the QPOs with the basis of the accretion column. QPOs are detected in the three filters at a mean frequency of $\sim$ 0.7 Hz with a similar amplitude $\sim$ 1\%. Mean orbitally-averaged power spectra during the bright phase show a rather broad excess with a quality factor Q= $\nu$/$\Delta \nu$ = 5-7 but smaller data segments commonly show a much higher coherency with Q up to 30. The XMM (0.5--10 keV) observation provides the first accurate estimation of the hard X-ray component with a high kT $\sim$ 40 keV temperature and confirms the high EUV-soft/hard ratio in the range of (4--15) for VV Pup. The detailed X-ray orbital light curve displays a short $\Delta \phi \simeq 0.05$ ingress into self-eclipse of the active pole, indicative of a accretion shock height of $\sim$ 75 km. No significant X-ray QPOs are detected with an amplitude upper limit of $\sim$30\% in the range (0.1--5) Hz. Detailed hydrodynamical numerical simulations of the post-shock accretion region with parameters consistent with VV Pup demonstrate that the expected frequencies from radiative instability are identical for X-rays and optical regime at values $\nu$ $\sim$ (40--70) Hz, more than one order magnitude higher than observed. This confirms previous statements suggesting that present instability models are unable to explain the full QPO characteristics within the parameters commonly known for polars., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: Some polars show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) in their optical light curves which have been interpreted as the result of shock oscillations driven by the cooling instability. Although numerical simulations can recover this physics, they wrongly predict QPOs in the X-ray luminosity and have also failed to reproduce the observed frequencies, at least for the limited range of parameters explored so far. Given the uncertainties on the observed polar parameters, it is still unclear whether simulations can reproduce the observations. The aim of this work is to study QPOs covering all relevant polars showing QPOs. We perform numerical simulations including gravity, cyclotron and bremsstrahlung radiative losses, for a wide range of polar parameters, and compare our results with the astronomical data using synthetic X-ray and optical luminosities.We show that shock oscillations are the result of complex shock dynamics triggered by the interplay of two radiative instabilities. The secondary shock forms at the acoustic horizon in the post-shock region in agreement with our estimates from steady-state solutions. We also demonstrate that the secondary shock is essential to sustain the accretion shock oscillations at the average height predicted by our steady-state accretion model. Finally, in spite of the large explored parameter space, matching the observed QPO parameters requires a combination of parameters inconsistent with the observed ones. This difficulty highlights the limits of one-dimensional simulations, suggesting that multi-dimensional effects are needed to understand the non-linear dynamics of accretion columns in polars and the origins of QPOs., 12 pages, 8 figure, accepted in MNRAS

Abstract: Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) of a few seconds have been detected in some Polars, the synchronised subclass of cataclysmic systems containing a strongly magnetised white dwarf (WD) which accretes matter from a red dwarf companion. The QPOs are thought to be related to instabilities of a shock formed in the accretion column, close to the WD photosphere above the impact region. We present optical observations of the polar V834 Centauri performed with the fast ULTRACAM camera mounted on the ESO-VLT simultaneously in three filters (u', He II 4686A, r') to study these oscillations and characterise their properties along the orbit. Fast Fourier transforms and wavelet analysis have been performed and the mean frequency, rms amplitude, and coherence of the QPOs are derived; a detailed inspection of individual pulses has also been performed. The observations confirm the probable ubiquity of the QPOs for this source at all epochs when the source is in a high state, with observed mean amplitude of 2.1 percent (r'), 1.5 percent (He II), and 0.6 percent (u'). Trains of oscillations are clearly observed in the r' light curve and can be mimicked by a superposition of damped sinusoids with various parameters. The QPO energy distribution is comparable to that of the cyclotron flux, consistent for the r' and He II filters but requiring a significant dilution in the u' filter. New 1D hydrodynamical simulations of shock instabilities, adapted to the physical parameters of V834 Cen, can account for the optical QPO amplitude and X-ray upper limit assuming a cross section of the accretion column in the range (4-5) E14 cm2. However, the predicted frequency is larger than the observed one by an order of magnitude. This shortcoming indicates that the QPO generation is more complex than that produced in a homogeneous column and calls for a more realistic 3D treatment of the accretion flow in future modelling., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract: We model the observed X-ray spectral continuum shape, ionic column densities, and absorption measure distribution (AMD) of the warm absorber in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3783. We assume a photo-ionized medium with a uniform total (gas+radiation) pressure. The irradiation causes the wind to be radiation pressure compressed (RPC). We compare the observational characteristics derived from the 900 ksec Chandra observation to radiative transfer computations in pressure equilibrium using the radiative transfer code TITAN. We explore different values of the ionization parameter xi of the incident flux and adjust the hydrogen-equivalent column density, N_H0 of the warm absorber to match the observed soft X-ray continuum. We derive theoretical column densities for a broad range of ionic species of iron and neon and an AMD that we compare to the observations. We find an extension of the degeneracy between xi and N_H0 for the constant pressure models previously discussed for NGC 3783. Including the ionic column densities of iron and neon in the comparison between observations and data we conclude that a range of ionization parameters between 4000 and 8000 ergs cm/s is preferred. For the first time, we present theoretical AMD for a constant pressure wind in NGC 3783 that correctly reproduces the observed level and is in approximate agreement with the observational appearance of an instability region. Using a variety of observational indicators, we confirm that the X-ray outflow of NGC 3783 can be described as an RPC medium in pressure equilibrium. The observed AMD agrees with a uniformly hot or a uniformly cold thermal state. The measured ionic column densities suggest that the wind tends to the uniformly cold thermal state. The occurrence of thermal instability in the warm absorber model may depend on the computational method and the spatial scale on which the radiative transfer is solved., Comment: accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Abstract: Following an extensive survey of the galactic plane by the INTEGRAL satellite, new hard X-ray sources are discovered with a significant fraction of Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) among them. We report here the identification of one of these hard X-ray sources, IGR J00234+6141, as an accreting magnetic white dwarf of intermediate polar type. We analyse the high energy emission of the INTEGRAL source using all available data and provide complementary optical photometric and spectroscopic data obtained respectively in August and October 2006. Based on a refined INTEGRAL position, we confirm the proposed optical identification. We clearly detect the presence of a 564 s periodic optical modulation that we identify as the rotation of the white dwarf. The analysis of the optical spectrum also demonstrates that the emission lines show a modulation in radial velocity with an orbital period of Porb = (4.033 +/- 0.005) hr. The two periodicities indicate that IGR00234+6141 is a magnetic CV of the intermediate polar type. This is one of the faintest and hardest sources of this type detected by INTEGRAL. This confirms earlier conclusions that IPs contribute significantly to the population of galactic X-ray sources and represent a significant fraction of the high energy background., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

6. The role of absorption and reflection in the soft X-ray excess of Active Galactic Nuclei

Abstract: The 2-10 keV continuum of AGN is well represented by a single power law, generally attributed to a hot comptonizing medium, such as a corona above the accretion disk. At smaller energies the continuum displays an excess with respect to the extrapolation of this power law, called the ``soft X-ray excess". Until now it was attributed, either to reflection of the hard X-ray source by the accretion disk, or to the presence of an additional comptonizing medium. An alternative solution proposed by Gierli\'nski & Done (2004) is that a single power law represents correctly both the soft and the hard X-ray emission, and the soft X-ray excess is an artefact due to the absorption of the primary power law by a relativistic wind. We examine the advantages and drawbacks of the reflection versus absorption models. We argue that in the absorption hypothesis, the absorbing medium should be in total pressure equilibrium, to constrain the spectral distribution which otherwise would be too strongly variable in time and from one object to the other, as compared to observations. We conclude that some X-ray spectra, in particular those with strong soft X-ray excesses, can be modelled by absorption in the 0.3-10 keV range. However, due to the lack of a complete grid of models and good data extending above 10 keV, we are not able to conclude presently that all objects can be accommodated with such models. These absorption models imply either strong relativistic outflowing winds with mass rates of the order of the Eddington value (or even larger), or quasi-spherical inhomogeneous accretion flows. Only weak excesses can be modelled by reflection, unless the primary continuum is not directly seen. Finally, a reflection model absorbed by a modest relativistic wind could be the best solution to the problem.

Abstract: Mkn 841 has been observed simultaneously by XMM and BeppoSAX in January 2001. Due to operational contingency, the 30ks XMM observation was split into two parts, separated by about 15 hours. We first report the presence of a narrow iron line which appears to be rapidly variable between the two pointings, requiring a non-standard interpretation. We then focus on the analysis of the broad band (0.3-200 keV) continuum using the XMM/EPIC, RGS and SAX/PDS data. The Mkn 841 spectrum is well fitted by a comptonization model in a geometry more photon-fed than a simple slab geometry above a passive disk. It presents a relatively large reflection (R>2) which does not agree with an apparently weak iron line. It also show the presence of a strong soft excess wellfitted by a comptonized spectrum in a cool plasma, suggesting the presence of a multi-temperature corona., 4 pages, 5 figures. 8. Far-UV FUSE Spectra of Peculiar Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables

Abstract: We present far-UV spectra of the three magnetic cataclysmic variables (MCVs) BY Cam, V1309 Ori and AE Aqr obtained with the FUSE satellite. These MCVs have revealed strongly unusual NV and CIV UV resonance lines. The FUSE spectra exhibit broad OVI lines as well as a strong NIII line at 991Å, while the CIII 1175Å line is nearly absent, supporting non-solar CNO abundances of the accreting matter in these sources. The spectrum of BY Cam shows molecular H2 lines which might be of circumstellar nature. The flaring activity of AE Aqr is also observed in the far-UV range. The radial velocities of the broad OVI components in AE Aqr are orbitally modulated and would indicate an emission region close to the magnetosphere.

9. The SNLS-VLT Type Ia Spectrum Evolution with Redshift: a Demographic Effect?

Abstract: We build composite spectra at z ≤ 0.5 and z > 0.5 from the 3 year SuperNova Legacy Survey (SNLS) VLT spectral sample and study their differences around maximum light. We use 93 spectra near maximum of confirmed SNe Ia observed at the VLT between 2003 and 2006 as part of the 3 first years of operation of the SNLS. We find differences in the absorption depth of some intermediate mass elements (Ca ii, Si ii). Average stretches of observed distributions are 0.975 ± 0.016 and 0.983 ± 0.014 for the z ≤ 0.5 and z > 0.5 sample respectively. We use the A+B model of Scannapieco & Bildsten (2005) to interpret these results in terms of a possible demographic evolution.

Abstract: The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) was studied within ESA M3 Cosmic Vision framework and participated in the final down-selection for a launch slot in 2022-2024. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument, LOFT will study the behaviour of matter under extreme conditions, such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions of accretion flows close to black holes and neutron stars, and the supra-nuclear densities in the interior of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, 10 m 2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 deg collimated field of view) and a WideField Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g. GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. Abstract: Outflows in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) play an important role in the evolution of their host galaxy and on the enrichment of the intergalactic medium. In the X‐ray range, the outflows appear as a warm absorber (WA) gas displaying high bulk velocities.The Absorption Measure Distribution (AMD) method provides a new handle on constraining the physics of the WA. Here, we report on the theoretical interpretation of an AMD analysis of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3783. Computations in constant total pressure performed with the transfer‐photoionization code TITAN allow us to reproduce the WA gas ionic column‐densities by adjusting some important plasma parameters, e.g., the ionization parameter (ξ), the total column density (NH) or the amount of micro‐turbulence.Results from both the AMD method and the TITAN code suggest the presence of a region where thermal instabilities are observed. Abstract: We discuss implications of a strong flare event observed in the Seyfert galaxy MCG-6-30-15 assuming that the emission is due to localized magnetic reconnection. We conduct detailed radiative transfer modeling of the reprocessed radiation for a primary source that is elevated above the disk. The model includes relativistic effects and Keplerian motion around the black hole. We show that for such a model setup the observed time-modulation must be intrinsic to the primary source. Using a simple analytical model we then investigate time delays between hard and soft X-rays during the flare. The model considers an intrinsic delay between primary and reprocessed radiation, which measures the geometrical distance of the flare source to the reprocessing sites. Abstract: Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are observed in the optical flux of some polars with typical periods of 1 to 3 s but none have been observed yet in X-rays where a significant part of the accreting energy is released. QPOs are expected and predicted from shock oscillations. Most of the polars have been observed by the XMM-Newton satellite. We made use of the homogeneous set of observations of the polars by XMM-Newton to search for the presence of QPOs in the (0.5-10 keV) energy range and to set significant upper limits for the brightest X-ray polars. We extracted high time-resolution X-ray light curves by taking advantage of the 0.07 sec resolution of the EPIC-PN camera. Among the 65 polars observed with XMM-Newton from 1998 to 2012, a sample of 24 sources was selected on the basis of their counting rate in the PN instrument to secure significant limits. We searched for QPOs using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) methods and defined limits of detection using statistical tools. Among the sample surveyed, none shows QPOs at a significant level. Upper limits to the fractional flux in QPOs range from 7% to 71%. These negative results are compared to the detailed theoretical predictions of numerical simulations based on a 2D hydrodynamical code presented in Paper II. Cooling instabilities in the accretion column are expected to produce shock quasi-oscillations with a maximum amplitude reaching ~ 40% in the bremsstrahlung (0.5-10 keV) X-ray emission and ~ 20% in the optical cyclotron emission. The absence of X-ray QPOs imposes an upper limit of ~ (5-10) g.cm-2.s-1 on the specific accretion rate but this condition is found inconsistent with the value required to account for the amplitudes and frequencies of the observed optical QPOs. Abstract: Magnetic cataclysmic variables are close binary systems containing a strongly magnetized white dwarf that accretes matter coming from an M-dwarf companion. High-energy radiation coming from those objects is emitted from the accretion column close to the white dwarf photosphere at the impact region. Its properties depend on the characteristics of the white dwarf and an accurate accretion column model allows the properties of the binary system to be inferred, such as the white dwarf mass, its magnetic field, and the accretion rate. We study the temporal and spectral behaviour of the accretion region and use the tools we developed to accurately connect the simulation results to the X-ray and optical astronomical observations. The radiation hydrodynamics code Hades was adapted to simulate this specific accretion phenomena. Classical approaches were used to model the radiative losses of the two main radiative processes: bremsstrahlung and cyclotron. The oscillation frequencies and amplitudes in the X-ray and optical domains are studied to compare those numerical results to observational ones. Different dimensional formulae were developed to complete the numerical evaluations. The complete characterization of the emitting region is described for the two main radiative regimes: when only the bremsstrahlung losses and when both cyclotron and bremsstrahlung losses are considered. The effect of the non-linear cooling in- stability regime on the accretion column behaviour is analysed. Variation in luminosity on short timescales (~ 1 s quasi-periodic oscillations) is an expected consequence of this specific dynamic. The importance of secondary shock instability on the quasi-periodic oscillation phenomenon is discussed. The stabilization effect of the cyclotron process is confirmed by our numerical simulations, as well as the power distribution in the various modes of oscillation., 13 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. Abstract: The emission from galactic black holes and Seyfert galaxies is generally understood in term of two-phase models (Haardt and Maraschi 1991, 1993). Such models postulate that a hot plasma coexists with relatively colder material in the inner part of the accretion flow. We present the first simulated broad-band spectra produced by such a system and accounting simultaneously for energy balance and Comptonisation in the hot phase, together with reflection, reprocessing, ionization and thermal balance in the cold phase. This was made possible by coupling three radiative transfer codes: a non-linear Monte-Carlo code (NLMC), a photo-ionization code TITAN and a linear Monte-Carlo code NOAR. The equilibrium comptonisation spectrum appears to be sensitive to the shape of the reprocessed spectrum that, in turn, depends on the ionization parameter, but also on the structure of the irradiated cold material. This is illustrated by a comparison of simulations assuming constant density or a constant pressure in the cold phase. We also compare our results with simplified models where reprocessing is approximated by a blackbody spectrum. Our detailed treatment leads to noticeably different spectral energy distributions (SEDs) characterised by harder X-ray spectra. Even at low ionization parameters the commonly used blackbody approximation is poor, leading to X-ray spectra that are too soft. The effect, however, seems not to be strong enough to reconcile the slab corona model with the hardest observed spectra, unless the reflector has a constant density and the ionization parameter is large., 11 pages, 5 figures, to appear in A&A

Abstract: Some magnetic CVs like BY Cam are characterized by unusual CNO line ratios compared to other polars and non-solar abundances have been suggested to explain this anomaly. We present here a first attempt to constrain the elemental abundances in these systems by applying a specific ionisation model combined with a geometrical description of the accretion column where these lines are thought to be formed. The line luminosities have been computed using the CLOUDY plasma code for different ionisation spectra and column extension. We show here selected results and compare to the values observed in "peculiar" magnetic CVs. The model applied to BY Cam confirms that ionization models with solar abundances fail to reproduce the observed line intensity ratios. Abstract: We report on the detection of a rapidly variable narrow Fe K$\alpha$ line in Mkn 841. The source has been observed two times by XMM-Newton and simultaneously with BeppoSAX. The two observations, of about 10ks long each, were separated by $\sim$ 15 hours. The line flux reaches a maximum during the first observation and is significantly reduced in the second one. The continuum shape and flux, instead, keep roughly constant between the two pointings. Such rapid variability of a narrow (unresolved by the XMM-pn instrument) line has never been reported in the past. These results are not easily explained in the standard cold reflection model where the narrow line component is supposed to be produced far from the primary X-ray source (e.g. from the torus) and is thus not expected to vary rapidly. Abstract: RE 0751+14 is a member of the class of Soft Intermediate Polars. Unlike classical Intermediate Polars, they are characterized by the presence of a soft component in their X-ray spectra, in addition to the hard component typical of these systems. The broad-band coverage of the Narrow-Field instruments on board BeppoSAX is ideal for the study of such objects. Here we report the preliminary results of the analysis of a BeppoSAX pointing to RE 0751+14. Both components are clearly detected, and their temperature determined (~50 eV and ~40 keV), enabling the possibility of studying them simultaneously., 4 pages, 1 figure. Abstract: Using time-resolved optical spectroscopy and UBVRI and high-speed photometry obtained at Mount Stromlo Observatory, Mount John University Observatory, and the South African Astronomical Observatory; International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) ultraviolet spectroscopy; and Roentgen Satellite (ROSAT) survey X-ray fluxes, we present a study of the accretion disk, hot spot, and emission line regions in the bright eclipsing nova-like variable V347 Pup (LB 1800). In the optical and UV, V347 Pup is a strong emission line source with a continuum spectrum which is remarkably red for a high-M cataclysmic variable. Consistent with its high inclination, we interpret the continuum spectrum as the superposition of the spectrum of the cool (T(sub eff) approximately 7000 K) outer edge and the hot (T(sub eff) approximately 100,000 K) inner regions of a self-eclipsed accretion disk. For the assumed parameters, the model matches the level and shape of the observed spectrum for an inclination of approximately 88 and a distance of approximately 300 pc. The prominent hump in the optical and UV light curves just before eclipse manifests the presence of the hot spot where the accretion stream strikes the edge of the disk. The wavelength dependence of the amplitude of the hump is best modeled by a spot having an effective temperature of approximately 25,000 K and an area of approximately 3 x 10(exp 18) sq cm if the spot radiates like a blackbody, or an effective temperatue of approximately 14,000 K and an area of approximately 3 x 10(exp 19) sq cm if it radiates with a stellar spectrum. In either case, the hot spot produces only one-tenth of the predicted luminosity for the assumed mass-transfer rate of 10(exp -8) solar mass/yr. Either the hot spot is 'buried' in the edge of the accretion disk, or a significant fraction of its luminosity is radiated away in lines. The difference in azimuth between the peak of the hump and the dynamically expected location of the hot spot suggests that the spot's emitting surface is rotated forward by approximately 36 deg relative to the edge of the disk.

Abstract: Four EXOSAT observations are presented of the Be/X-ray transient pulsar HDE 245770/A0535+26 obtained at various phases of the 111 d period. On all occasions, a faint X-ray flux is detected from the source which corresponds to L X (1-20 keV) = 2.5 × 10 35 ergs s -1 at 2.6 kpc. Pulsations at 103.36 ± 0.08 s and 103.29 ± 0.07 s are present during two of the four observations. The detection of a weak pulsed X-ray emission sets a limit of less than 2.5 × 10 31 G cm 3 to the magnetic dipole moment of the neutron star. The UV line and flux histories extracted from the IUE data bank are not clearly correlated with the X-ray behavior while stronger evidences for a correlation may exist at optical wavelength.

The ultraviolet and optical continuum can be well described by the standard disc model but this requires rather large discs and high accretion rates. Other possible contributions to the energy distribution are estimated. The predicted high accretion rates as well as the amplitude of the optical pulsations are in disagreement with the observed X-ray luminosity suggesting the existence of an unseen soft X-ray or extreme UV component.

Abstract: With the last generation of X-ray satellites, such as XMM-Newton and Chandra, our knowledge about the X-ray properties of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has greatly improved. Detailed spectroscopy and long-term observations of hundreds of kilo-seconds have provided new insights into the mechanisms of X-ray production, its modification by intervening matter, and X-ray variability.In this thesis I present radiative transfer modeling of AGN in the Far-UV and X-ray range. The modeling considers several aspects of the observed X-ray properties: the Compton reflection/reprocessed component, X-ray variability and flares, and the effects of the warm absorber.For the X-ray reprocessing, I investigate in detail the magnetic flare model assuming solar-like magnetic reconnections above the accretion disk. Such events should produce bright, compact sources of hard X-ray radiation creating a hot spot on the disk surface underneath. I evaluate the physical properties of the disk medium across such a spot and compute spectra of the reprocessed radiation as a function of the position in the spot and of the local viewing direction. Spots at several distances of the central black hole and for different orbital phases are considered and I vary the black hole mass, its accretion rate, and its spin-parameter. Spectra are also computed for a distant observer including a full relativistic treatment, which is based on a ray-tracing technique. I provide time-dependent simulations of single flare events taking into account the time-lags induced by the distance between the compact flare source and different positions of the hot spot. The flare modeling is conducted assuming an underlying accretion disk in hydrostatic equilibrium. The duration of the flare is supposed to be significantly smaller than the dynamical time-scale, so that the vertical density structure of the disk remains constant over the whole flare-period.Recent observations of the Seyfert-1 galaxy MCG -6-30-15 with XMM-Newton revealed a light-curve with a bright symmetric flare over 2000 s. For this flare, Ponti et al. (2004) presented a cross-correlation analysis deriving time-lags in several energy bands. I present a simple toy model describing such time-lags by assuming that the observer detects the primary radiation and the reprocessed component as two consecutive pulses. The toy model qualitatively reproduces the observed time-lags of MCG -6-30-15 and allows an estimation of the distance between the flare source and the disk.Using the results of the single-flare modeling, Monte-Carlo simulations for distributions of orbiting flare-spots across an accretion disk are conducted. The resulting fractional variability spectrum is constructed for different radial luminosity distributions and values of the black hole spin. These parameters are constrained for MCG -6-30-15 by applying the model to its observed fractional variability spectrum.Finally, the modification of the X-ray radiation in regions farther away from the central object is considered by modeling the warm absorber. A grid of models is computed for a warm absorber in pressure equilibrium as recently suggested by the observation of the Seyfert-1 galaxy NGC 3783. La spectroscopie détaillée et les observations longues de plusieurs centaines de milliers de secondes ont ouvert de nouvelles perspectives sur les mécanismes de la production du rayonnement X, de sa modification par la matière située sur son chemin, et sur sa variabilité.Dans ma thèse, je présente des modèles de transfert de rayonnement thermique pour les NAG dans les domaines spectraux de l'extrême UV et des X. Les modèles prennent en considération plusieurs aspects des propriétés X observées: la composante du 'reprocessing', la variabilité et les flares X, ainsi que les effets du 'warm absorber'. Concernant le reprocessing, je modélise en détail des flares X en supposant des reconnexions magnétiques au-dessus du disque d'accrétion. Ces événements sont supposés être similaires aux flares solaires. Ils produisent des sources lumineuses et compactes émettant du rayonnement X dur et créant des taches chaudes sur le disque sous-jacent. J'évalue les propriétés physiques du milieu du disque à travers la tache et je calcule des spectres pour le rayonnement ré-émis en fonction de la position dans la tache et de la ligne de visée locale. Je fais varier la masse du trou noir, son taux d'accrétion, et son paramètre de rotation en évaluant des taches à plusieurs distances du trou noir et pour des phases orbitales différentes. Je calcule aussi des spectres vus par un observateur lointain en appliquant un traitement complet de relativité qui est basé sur une technique du tracés de rayons. Je fournis des simulations de l'évolution spectrale à laquelle on s'attend pour des flares particuliers, en tenant compte des délais causés par la distance entre la source compacte et différents endroits de la tache chaude. Les modèles du flare sont effectués en supposant un disque d'accrétion sous-jacent qui est à l'équilibre hydrostatique. La durée du flare est supposée être par un facteur significatif moins longue que l'échelle de temps dynamique du disque, afin que sa structure verticale reste constante pendant toute la période du flare.Des observations récentes de la galaxie Seyfert-1 MCG -6-30-15 avec XMM-Newton ont montré une courbe du lumière qui contient un flare lumineux et symétrique pendant environ 2000 secondes. Pour ce flare, Ponti et al. (2004) présentent une analyse temporelle à l'aide des fonctions d'auto-corrélation en dérivant des délais entre des bandes d'énergie différentes. Je suggère un modèle simple qui décrit ces délais en supposant que l'observateur détecte le rayonnement primaire et le reprocessing comme pulses consécutifs. Ce modèle reproduit les délais observés dans MCG -6-30-15 d'une manière qualitativement correcte, et il permet une estimation de la distance entre la source compacte du flare et la surface du disque.En utilisant les résultats de la modélisation d'un flare particulier, on effectue des simulations Monte-Carlo pour des distributions de flares répartis sur le disque. Le spectre de variabilité rms calculé est construit sur la base des ces simulations pour différentes distributions radiales de la luminosité du disque et pour différents paramètres de rotation du trou noir. En appliquant notre modèle au spectre rms observé, nous apportons à ces paramètres des contraintes pour le cas de MCG -6-30-15.Enfin, nous étudions la modification du rayonnement X dans des régions plus lointaines de l'objet central grâce à une modélisation du warm absorber. Une grille de modèles est calculée pour un warm absorber en équilibre de pression totale, comme l'a suggéré récemment l'observation de la galaxie Seyfert-1 NGC 3783.
